IELTS Model Essay: Self Employment

Self Employed v Employed

This week’s IELTS model essay is one of my favourite tasks! It’s on the topic of self employment:

Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organisation. Why might this be the case? What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?

Cambridge IELTS Academic 14 Test 4

In effect, this is an ‘advantages – disadvantages’ essay in disguise! The first question ‘why might be the case’ is really asking you for the advantages of self-employment. People choose to be self-employed because there are advantages.

So I think the question could be worded like this:

Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organisation. What could be the advantages and disadvantages of being self-employed?

If you find it difficult to generate ideas for this task , you can simply search online for “advantages and disadvantages of self employment”. You will get lots of ideas! Here are some interesting articles:

  • https://freelancinghacks.com/advantages-and-disadvantages-of-being-self-employed/

It’s probably a good idea to include some comparisons between self-employment and working for a company, because the topic isn’t only about self-employment: it includes the phrase “ rather than to work for a company or organisation” . So some comparative language is useful, and will increase your range of vocabulary too.

Reasons why (advantages)

Potentially higher earnings

  • may only get a small annual pay increase
  • self-employment: working harder can mean big financial rewards
  • don’t have to do what your boss tells you to do
  • e.g. make your own decisions
  • more flexibility with working hours / work

Disadvantages

Greater risk

  • no guaranteed income in self employment
  • employed people get regular pay
  • problem if you have mortgage
  • difficult to take holidays, may have to work weekends / evenings
  • working for someone else usually has fixed hours, finish by 5pm

This essay is quite long, so I decided to split my essay into four body paragraphs . This will make it easier for my reader to see the structure of my essay.

There seems to be a growing trend of people around the world choosing to be self-employed rather than to work for a company. This essay will consider the reasons for this as well as the drawbacks of working for yourself.

One of the main attractions of self-employment is the opportunity for higher earnings than you might receive when working for a company. In the latter, salaries are determined by your boss and increases are often limited, regardless of how hard you work. If you work hard as a self-employed person, the financial rewards are potentially unlimited, especially with online businesses. For example, using social media advertising can allow a solopreneur to rapidly increase sales.

But money is, for many people, not the main incentive of working for oneself. Instead, it’s the sense of autonomy you receive. You no longer have to do what your line manager tells you to do; instead, you can make your own decisions. This allows you to enjoy greater flexibility over things like working hours and the kind of work you do.

However, there are drawbacks to self employment. Firstly, there might be considerable financial risk. There is no guarantee of income, unlike those who receive regular pay cheques from their boss, and it’s not unusual to see new small businesses fail due to a lack of money. This is quite daunting for people who have regular expenses such as a mortgage, and so many people prefer the safety afforded to them by working for someone else.

Additionally, working for yourself will usually entail working long hours, sometimes at weekends and in the evening, leaving little time for the kind of recreation time enjoyed by workers who simply stop work at around 5pm. Furthermore, it may be difficult to take holidays if you work for yourself, so the work-life balance for self-employed people can be a problem.

In short, self-employment isn’t for everyone. There are clear drawbacks related to money and time, but for many people, the attraction of greater success and satisfaction is worth the risk.

How to Write a Band 9 IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay | Two Direct Questions

ielts writing task 2 sample answer

In this lesson, we will take a look at a full Band 9 IELTS Writing sample essay on self-employment, and explore how it meets all the requirements used by IELTS examiners.

Understand the task

Self-employment is a topic that regularly appears in real IELTS exams. It refers to people who work for themselves rather than for a company, such as freelancers or entrepreneurs who open their own businesses.

Here’s the full task:

Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed rather than work for a company or organisation. Why might this be the case? What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

Answer the question fully

To achieve a Band 7 or higher score in IELTS Writing, it is essential to fully answer the question. Understanding what type of task you are given can help you structure your essay accordingly.

Generally, there are five types of tasks:

  • advantages and disadvantages
  • two views and your opinion
  • opinion essays
  • problem-solutions
  • two direct questions

5 types of IELTS essays

The first question is, “ Why might this be the case?” In other words, why do people choose to become self-employed? What are their reasons? Or what advantages does self-employment offer? In this particular case, reasons and advantages mean the same thing.

The second question is, “What could be the disadvantages?” This means that we should provide several downsides of being self-employed in comparison with having a job.

Our task type is two direct questions . How can we make sure we answer it fully?

Structure your essay correctly

For our question type, the essay structure is quite straightforward:

- an introduction

- an answer to the first question

- an answer to the second question

- a conclusion

There are two keys to structuring your essay so you can get Band 7 and up:

  • Explore each question sufficiently in-depth without adding any irrelevant information.
  • Logically organise ideas in the essay so that each sentence follows from the previous one and all ideas are connected.

Let’s have a look at how it was done in this essay.

Introduction

An increasing number of people today opt to work for themselves instead of having a job.

In this first sentence, I directly paraphrased the task sentence. You may choose to introduce the topic more generally first, but I decided that it’s not needed in this case.

This choice has a number of benefits and drawbacks, which will be discussed in this essay.

As our task doesn’t require an opinion, I’m just giving an outline of what the essay is about. I prefer not to give a summary of ideas in the introduction and instead keep it for my conclusion; otherwise, the essay might get repetitive. It’s important to keep your introduction short and to the point. Use more of your time for your body paragraphs.

Body Paragraph 1

In the first body paragraph, we’re answering the first question, “Why might this be the case?” I have two main ideas to present:

  • Self-employed individuals may potentially earn more money than someone on a salary.
  • They also have more flexibility as in they can choose their working hours, holidays, or where to work from.

Before you get into all the details and examples, make sure you have a topic sentence that introduces the whole paragraph:

Some of the most common reasons for self-employment are the income and lifestyle that it may provide.

So, I introduced both my ideas. Now I’m going to talk about the first.

Unlike employees, whose responsibilities and income are determined by their employers, people who work for themselves are free to implement their ideas as quickly as they can, and they receive all the revenue.

Let’s develop it further. What does it mean?

That means that self-employed people can potentially earn much more than those with similar skills and experience who work for a salary.

Now, the second idea and a linker:

Moreover, not having a boss means that people can choose their own working hours and number of holidays, among other things.

This reason is clear enough. If your idea is clear, don’t repeat it several times. Make your point and move on. To wrap it up, I’m going to sum up my ideas and link this paragraph back to our initial question.

Not surprisingly, more and more people are leaving the safety of a salaried job to become self-employed.

Most IELTS candidates know they need to have several paragraphs in the essay, but it’s equally important to have a logical structure inside each paragraph. In my body paragraph, it’s clear what it’s about, when it begins and when it ends. This is very important for a good score.

In my courses , we pay a lot of attention to this and you can how to write each paragraph of your essay sentence by sentence.

Body paragraph 2

Now we’re answering the second question, “What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?”

Make sure that your essay is balanced. It doesn’t matter whether you think that being self-employed is great or terrible, you need to give several reasons why people choose it, and give several disadvantages of it.

My disadvantages or downsides are:

- financial uncertainty as they might not know how much they will earn

- more responsibilities

- a higher level of stress

Let’s start with a simple statement that describes the whole paragraph:

Despite the obvious appeal, being self-employed is riskier than working for someone else.

This sentence is short, but it’s highly complex from a grammatical point of view.

The phrase “despite the obvious appeal” links this paragraph to the previous one where we discussed the appeal or the reasons why people choose it. Don’t forget your comma!

Next, we have a gerund, “ being self-employed”, another piece of advanced grammar. Finally, I established a comparison by using “than” .

A complex sentence doesn’t have to be long. Now that I’ve introduced the paragraph, let’s go to the first idea:

One of the risks is financial uncertainty.

It’s simple and to the point. Band 9 essays can have simple sentences. Let’s clarify this idea.

Entrepreneurs and freelancers are not guaranteed a certain level of income, nor are they eligible for a pension, paid holidays, and sick leave.

This is more complex. We have an inversion: “nor are they eligible” ; the verb “are” comes before the subject “they”.

The workload may be higher too.

This is another very simple sentence. And now:

Unlike employees who can specialise in one function, the self-employed are responsible for all of the business operations, from attracting clients to delivering products or services to preparing their financial accounts, to name a few.

This is probably the longest sentence in my essay.

Vary your structures. One sentence may be simple and short. The next may be long and complex.

The multitude of issues that self-employed people have to manage…

I’m already summarizing the disadvantages I’ve named so far.

…may cause them more stress and anxiety than full-time employees tend to experience.

This is my last idea, which also summarizes my paragraph: self-employed people face a number of issues, which cause stress. Now that the paragraph is finished, all we need is a conclusion.

Conclusion

To conclude, more and more people are becoming self-employed,..

I’m restating what this essay is all about.

…choosing the flexibility and unlimited potential that this career path provides.

That’s the summary of the reasons. Now the summary of the disadvantages:

On the downside, these people are not guaranteed any income and must take full responsibility for themselves.

It’s short and to the point.

This essay is 286 words long. I must say that I’ve spent a fair amount of time on making this essay shorter while keeping all the ideas. If your English is advanced and you can write fast, your essay may go above 300 words; that’s not a problem. You need enough space to develop your ideas. If, however, there’s a risk that you may run out of time before you finish, keep your answer under 300 words.

Know this before your exam

This is just one way to write an essay. For your exam, you should learn what types of tasks exist in Task 1 and Task 2 and how to answer each of them; what to write in each part of your answers, and more generally, what the IELTS Writing requirements are and how to meet them.

I’ve designed my online courses specifically to teach you all this. These courses can help you prepare for IELTS Writing and Speaking in less time and achieve a higher score.

IELTS Writing task 2 requires test takers to write an essay of 250 words. The question is a statement based on the point of view, argument, or problem. Candidates must present their opinion and solution, back them with factual information, and evaluate ideas and evidence. This blog will present a sample IELTS essay on Nowadays Many People Choose to be Self-employed'.

Table of Contents

Why do you think many people choose to be self-employed nowadays: ielts sample essay 1, do you think being self-employed nowadays is a challenge: ielts essay sample 2, explore more resources related to ielts essays:.

With the cut-throat competition that has plagued the current job market, finding a suitable job has become quite challenging. Even if a person finds a job, there is no certainty, as every year, we hear how organizations sack their employees overnight because of poor performance. In addition, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the nation, the economy was in shambles, and thousands of people lost their jobs as the companies started facing losses.

The unsure job scenario in India has prompted individuals to establish their own startups or business rather than working for any other organization. This decision also stems from the freedom that comes along with being self-employed. They get to be their own boss, plan their working hours and schedule according to their convenience, and there is no higher authority to dominate.

However, though it might look easy, it is exhausting and stressful to be one's own boss. Being self-employed means that a person's business is like their child, and they cannot afford to disappoint the clients by missing deadlines. When the business undergoes financial losses, the entrepreneur only has to bear all the costs, which is not the case when working in a corporate. Moreover, when a person chooses to be self-employed, they can hardly take time for themselves, and even after years of hard work, there is no guarantee that they will succeed.

In conclusion, many people choose entrepreneurship or freelancing to maintain a work-life balance, but it is not an easy path and comes with a lot of stress.

Nowadays, many people are switching from working for a company to starting their own business. This is mainly because of their wish to work at flexible hours and be their own boss. While being an entrepreneur assures unlimited freedom, it is not as easy as it might look. People with businesses have to face many challenges, and no fixed income or a paycheck is coming at the end of the month. Self-employed people have to bear the brunt of losses and reap the benefits when the business makes profits.

The COVID-19 pandemic witnessed the highest unemployment rate in the last 50 years. The unemployment rate in the urban areas rose to 20.9% during the April-June quarter of 2020, which was more than double the previous year's unemployment rate of 8.9%. Many companies shut down due to the nationwide pandemic, and some laid-off employees to cut costs. This instilled fear in job seekers' minds, making them switch to being self-employed.

With digitalization, launching a business has become much easier. Thanks to the internet, entrepreneurs do not require huge capital to start their businesses. However, it might take time to establish the startup, and a person's income might even be lower than their previous salary. Competing with already established brands is not easy. Therefore, you might have to work for even 16 to 18 hours along with a great deal of discipline to succeed.

To summarise, young people choose to be self-employed, lured by the freedom to work on their terms. However, behind every successful business, an entrepreneur has to devote unlimited hours of hard work, and that too without any stable income.

Sample Essay 1

The trend towards self-employment has surged in recent years, driven by a desire for autonomy and the potential for higher earnings, but it also brings challenges such as financial instability and increased workload. This essay will explore the primary reasons for this shift, including the quest for freedom and the lure of unlimited income, while also examining the drawbacks, like the lack of corporate benefits and the unpredictability of self-employment income.

The enticement of self-employment lies chiefly in the autonomy it provides, a valued commodity in a society that increasingly cherishes individualism. This autonomy not only allows for tailored work-life integration, a rarity in traditional employment, but also empowers the pursuit of innovative ventures without the hindrance of bureaucratic red tape. A case in point is Silicon Valley's tech entrepreneurs, who favor self-employment for its capacity to swiftly turn ideas into reality. Additionally, self-employment appeals to those seeking a proportional reward for their efforts. In contrast to the rigid pay structures of regular jobs, it promises no cap on earnings. This is particularly evident among freelance digital marketers, whose income, directly tied to their skill and effort, often surpasses that of their peers in more conventional roles.

However, this path is not devoid of challenges. One significant drawback is the absence of corporate safety nets. Self-employed individuals must often forego benefits like employer-sponsored health insurance and retirement plans, shouldering these responsibilities alone. Furthermore, the volatility of income can be daunting. Unlike steady paychecks, self-employed earnings can fluctuate dramatically, as evidenced by freelance writers who may experience periods of feast or famine depending on market demand. Another notable challenge is the increased workload. Managing all aspects of a business, from client acquisition to financial planning, can be overwhelming. The case of independent consultants, who often juggle multiple roles simultaneously, illustrates this struggle vividly.

In conclusion, while self-employment offers enticing benefits such as autonomy and potentially unlimited earnings, it also demands considerable resilience and adaptability. The decision to embark on this path should be made with a full understanding of both its glittering prospects and its gritty realities.

Sample Essay 2

In recent times, a growing trend has emerged where people choose to be self-employed, rather than working for a company or organization. This shift is largely fueled by the ease of starting online businesses and the ability to reach a diverse consumer base. However, this entrepreneurial freedom comes with its challenges, particularly the heightened competition. As Internet access broadens, it also empowers competing businesses, intensifying the competitive landscape in various business domains.

The key reason behind people’s motivation towards owning a business is the unprecedented advancement of online technology. Take internet shopping as an example, people can launch an online business within an incredibly short period. As establishing online farms incurs low cost and hassle, owners can comfortably launch a farm and earn a handsome margin, whereas in the past, people had to rent a retail space associated with a sophisticated registration process, and mostly ended up with an insignificant profit. Furthermore, the cost of advertising has declined drastically with the blessing of digital platforms. Nowadays, harnessing the benefits of social media, with a minimal cost, people are easily promoting their brands to a large audience.

Nevertheless, it is always challenging to own a business, as it comes up with a lot of relevant difficulties. One of them is the involved high operating cost. There is an intense competition among the businesses, which is making it difficult for the start-ups to make their products stand out in the market. Moreover, those who work for themselves, need to bear an inevitable financial risk. These people are deprived of official benefits like company picnics, holiday pays and sick pays etc.

To conclude, even though people are finding it easier to take on self-employment and access to the market using online platforms, there are some massive drawbacks that come along with this trend, because owning a small business and easy entry into markets might incur diverse business competition and financial risks.

Sample Essay 3

In contemporary society, an increasing number of individuals are gravitating towards self-employment, eschewing traditional employment within companies or organizations. This trend can be attributed to the allure of autonomy, flexibility, and the potential for greater financial rewards. However, this path is not without its pitfalls, including instability and a lack of social benefits. This essay will explore both the reasons behind this choice and the potential drawbacks associated with self-employment.

The primary allure of self-employment lies in the autonomy it offers, allowing individuals to take control of their professional destinies. Many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organization, because it empowers them to pursue their passions on their own terms, free from the constraints of corporate hierarchies. This independence not only fosters creativity and innovation but also allows for a more flexible work-life balance. For instance, a freelance graphic designer can choose projects that align with their creative vision and schedule work hours around family commitments. Additionally, the potential for financial gain is significant, as entrepreneurs can directly reap the benefits of their hard work and ingenuity, often leading to higher earnings than those possible in traditional employment roles.

However, the path of self-employment is fraught with challenges. The absence of a stable paycheck introduces financial uncertainty, making it difficult to plan for the future or secure loans for personal investments such as a home. Moreover, self-employed individuals must bear the full burden of health insurance and retirement savings, lacking the employer contributions that benefit traditional employees. The psychological toll, including isolation and stress, can also be significant, as the responsibility for the success or failure of the business rests solely on the individual’s shoulders.

In conclusion, while the autonomy, flexibility, and potential for financial prosperity are compelling reasons for many to choose self-employment over traditional employment, these benefits are counterbalanced by considerable disadvantages. These include financial instability, the responsibility for one’s own social security benefits, and the potential for increased stress and isolation.

IELTS Essay on Employment

IELTS Essay on Employment

There are many IELTS writing topics but one of the common ones is employment . This means anything relating to the idea of working. (Of course, it could also be the opposite: unemployment .) In any case, today I will explain how to write an IELTS essay on employment.

We are going to look at two examples of IELTS writing task 2 questions about employment and then I will show you my two sample answers.

IELTS Writing Questions about Employment

The topic of employment could arise almost anywhere in the IELTS exam but it is quite common in task 2 of the writing test. In fact, the scope for what sort of question you could be asked is immense! You could be asked about employment and:

  • Environment
  • and much more

In short, you cannot really prepare for this by guessing the questions or having any expectation of a particular topic. Just know that you might have to write an essay about employment and that you will need to read it carefully.

IELTS Essay #1: Self-Employment vs Traditional Employment

First of all, let’s look at an IELTS writing question about self-employment.

Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organization. Why might this be the case? What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?

ielts essay on employment

This is a two-part question , which means you should aim to answer both questions in the body of your essay. In a sense, this makes it much easier to understand the question and structure your answer.

However, let’s make sure that we understand it perfectly.

Question analysis

Premise: In the modern era, many people work for themselves. This is different from the past, when they worked for companies.

We have to write about two things:

  • Why this has happened.
  • What are the disadvantages.

In a sense, this is a rare instance where the two-part question and the advantages-and-disadvantages question come together! You can see how #1 is sort of asking for the advantages, and #2 specifically asks for disadvantages.

How interesting!

Common Problems

I have often seen my writing correction students make the mistake of confusing freelancing, self-employment, and working from home. There can obviously be some overlap between these but there are also important distinctions:

To answer this question, I would take a pretty simple, four-paragraph structure for my approach. It would look like this:

Sample Band 9 Answer

It is quite common nowadays for people to be self-employed, rather than working for a company or organization. This essay will look into the reasons for that change, and then discuss some of the disadvantages of being self-employed.

In the information era, it is quite possible for people to work at home on their computer. The internet has opened up all sorts of possibilities in terms of making money, and so people may work as freelancers or start their own company. It has never been easier to do this because in the past working for yourself required renting an office or shop, whereas now you can simply set up a website or social media profile. People typically prefer this because it allows them a great deal of freedom. A person who prefers nights and loathes waking up early might choose to conduct their business at night, whereas someone who likes to travel might work from a laptop while visiting different places.

Of course, there are some disadvantages to being unemployed. This sort of employment lacks the security of a traditional job. In most countries, workers are protected by laws that guarantee them certain rights. However, with no employer and no workplace, these laws do not apply. Similarly, traditional jobs provide pension plans and health insurance, but when you work for yourself you have to provide these yourself, and they are not cheap. In fact, most self-employed people simply forego these things and take the risk as a part of their comparatively free life.

In conclusion, being self-employed allows people a far greater degree of freedom in their life, but there are several significant drawbacks that mean this sort of work is not suitable for everyone.

Note: This essay originally appeared here .

IELTS Essay #2: Job Satisfaction

Next, we will look at an IELTS essay on employment that deals specifically with the interesting issue of job satisfaction:

As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an important element of individual wellbeing. What factors contribute to job satisfaction? How realistic is the expectation of job satisfaction for all workers?

This is another two-part question. What a coincidence!

Question Analysis

In order to understand this question, we can again look closely at its premise:

Premise: Job satisfaction is important for a person’s wellbeing.

You have to write about:

  • The factors that make people satisfied with their work
  • Whether or not it is realistic for everyone to achieve job satisfaction

You should aim to write about all of this without straying off topic.

A lot of people seem to misunderstand or overlook the second question, which asks whether it is realistic for everyone to have job satisfaction . This can be a difficult thing to discuss with any depth, but you need to address it as best you can.

Here is how I will plan my IELTS essay about job satisfaction:

Although some people think that a high salary is the most important part of a job, the truth is that job satisfaction is probably more important. This essay will look at some of the factors contributing to this, and then argue that it is a reasonable expectation to have some degree of job satisfaction.

Every person is different and so defining job satisfaction is not an easy task. However, it could be stated that in order to provide this to employees, employers must give them a good justification for doing their job. The reason for this is that having a sense of satisfaction with one’s job largely comes from feeling a sense of purpose. People who feel that their efforts are useless or unappreciated invariably feel no job satisfaction. In addition to this, it is important that a person is given some degree of responsibility and autonomy with their tasks. Having a supervisor monitoring every single action presents a lack of trust and creates an atmosphere of oppression. When these two factors are met, they can result in workers who feel satisfied with their positions.

It may seem unlikely that people can achieve this because ever since the industrial revolution, it has been normal for people to work long hours in order to make money to survive, with little thought given to making workers happy or comfortable. However, in the modern world there is no good reason why this cannot be a new target. Employers should strive to give their employees dignity in the workplace, instead of maximizing productivity. Whether this is likely or not depends on social expectations and workplace laws, but it is certainly possible if the effort were made.

In conclusion, job satisfaction occurs when people are given tasks that matter and then offered some degree of responsibility. This could be given to everyone with the right motivation, although it is also possible that it may not happen.

Ok folks, I hope that was helpful for you. Now you can go and write your own IELTS essay on employment. Remember that there are many possible questions and so you should not assume that these two will appear in your next test. Also note that the topic of employment could appear in task 1 as a line graph of employment rates or any other sort of visual representation of employment and unemployment.

Nowadays, Many People Choose To Be Self Employed Rather Than Work For A Company Or Organisation

by Manjusha Nambiar · Published September 24, 2022 · Updated April 23, 2024

Many people choose to be self employed

Sample essay

Youngsters nowadays prefer to work for themselves rather than being employed by a company or organisation. In this essay, I shall give reasons as to why more and more people are choosing to be self-employed and list out its disadvantages in the following paragraphs. To begin with, the start-up culture has gained momentum and caught the imagination of the younger generation. Bright, young minds nowadays prefer to be their own bosses and start their own ventures in order to achieve independence in their professional lives. Hundreds of start-ups have received millions of dollars in funding and this has encouraged more and more youngsters to start their own ventures. However, being self-employed does have its share of drawbacks. One’s own business venture does not guarantee a stable source of income unlike a job with a fixed salary. Financial instability often leads to depression, suicide and adverse effects on family. Secondly, chances of a startup becoming a very successful business are slim. A survey conducted by the Economic Times in 2021 revealed that 9 out of 10 businesses have failed within the first 5 years of establishment. Chances of survival of a scalable business with sound financials and a healthy management are very difficult in the current scenario amidst rising competition. To sum up, even though the widely popularised startup culture has inspired people to  start their own ventures in order to achieve professional independence, it is very difficult and often impractical to establish successful businesses from scratch in the current scenario of cut-throat competition. This may also lead to financial instability and push them to the brink of suicide due to dwindling incomes.

ielts essay on self employed

Essay of the Week: Should you work for yourself or a company?

Our band nine sample essays give you the opportunity to learn from successful essays that show off the best structure, vocabulary and grammar. This essay is asks for your opinion about if it would be better to work for yourself or someone else.

Band Nine Sample Essay

Many people believe it is better to be self-employed than work for a company. to what extent do you agree or disagree.

Some people believe it is better to vacation in another country while others believe it is best to stay in one’s home country. Compare both sides and give your point of view.

As the tourism sector has grown in importance in the modern world, whether people should travel abroad on holiday has also gained in importance. In this essay I will, first, look at the cultural understanding that can be gained from traveling abroad, and then second, explore the environmental harm this can cause. I will conclude that it is better to avoid foreign travel.

First, travelling to other countries can be a culturally enriching experience. When travelling abroad, they can discover new styles of music, art and food. If people have this type of experience, it can teach them to learn more about the world and appreciate their own and other cultures, something that can enrich their lives long term. For example, if someone travels to Japan, they might gain a deeper understanding of areas of Japanese culture, such as sumo, sushi and communal eating.

However, although there are many advantages to international travel, there is also a significant environmental cost. When people travel abroad, their flights cause carbon dioxide to be ejected in the high atmosphere, contributing to global warming. Furthermore, the infrastructure for these tourists, such as building new hotels, roads and restaurants, can have a detrimental impact on the local environment. Ironically, such developments can often lead to the destruction of the local environment that initially lead people to want to visit.

To conclude, while I appreciate the cultural benefits of international travel, I believe that the environmental costs are too high. As a result, in my view it is better to take a stay-cation than travel abroad.

ielts essay on self employed

Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organization. Why might this be the case? What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?

In recent times, many people prefer working alone to working for an organization. As a result, there is a growing trend of startups and entrepreneurs among the young. This essay will discuss the reasons for this ownership and possible drawbacks of it.

Some people believe that work at your own pace improves productivity and innovation. Such kind of environment is at one’s disposal if they are their own boss. For instance, a web designer creating their own sites to market software products can make the best use of time to bring out unique work as there would be no one to impose rules on them. The ability to be free gives enough energy to ideate and implement better things. Besides, some believe that working for a company makes them exhausted with monotonous work which eventually becomes dissatisfying.

However, the major disadvantage of being self-employed is the influx of earnings. Working for an organisation guarantees a fixed monthly income even when the market is down whereas self-employment does not warrant it. For instance, freelancing can bring in high income when there is demand for your work but sometimes it does not bring enough money to satisfy monthly expenses.  In addition, starting a business requires high capital with no guaranteed returns. Although these risks are prevalent, if successful, one gets a chance to create employment opportunities for others and stand as an inspiration.

In conclusion, being self-employed or working for a company is ultimately a choice that many people make depending on their preferences and financial stature. The merits and demerits of self-employment are debatable, but it is a fact that people are moving towards it at a high rate.

Many people nowadays are opting to work for themselves, rather than for a company. There is a more palpable shift towards self-employment and a greater detachment from more traditional working structures. This essay will demonstrate how self-employment can lead to financial freedom and more flexibility of one’s output, but it will also show how financial freedom can be risky and the idea of creative flexibility can be illusionary. Whilst acknowledging the drawbacks, this essay will argue how the advantages of self-employment outweigh the disadvantages.

One clear benefit of working for one’s self, is the possibility of financial freedom and creative autonomy. By being self-employed, one has the room to create your own salary. Rather than being hemmed in by a fixed monthly amount, a person working for themselves can exceed this and create a salary that is reflective of their work and one that does not impede them by wider company policy. Although some people can see pay rises, this is seldom seen in many industries and despite the extra hours people work, their pay quickly hits a ceiling. Whereas, self-employment means you are not determined by someone else’s view of what you should be paid. As well as this, someone who is self-employed has more creative control. This is highly important as being passionate about what you do should be a key characteristic with any job. By having more creative control, we can determine what we produce and the effect we want it to have. Therefore, we are in control and can enjoy the work we ultimately decide to produce.

On the other hand, there are obvious disadvantages to being self-employed. Firstly, it can involve some financial risk where each month does not necessarily look financially the same. There may be dips and troughs where the individual is learning less than the previous month. This could seep into other aspects of their life and make certain things difficult, such as paying bills. Secondly, having to be constantly creative can be more difficult than perceived and its reality not as utopian as it may seem. For example, if someone is starting their own business or creating a course, the sole creative output rests on their shoulders and this can be difficult to routinely produce, rather than having a brief to fill which is passed down from a senior or fellow colleague.

In conclusion, whilst there are disadvantages to being self-employed, I believe the potential possibilities and benefits of being self-employed outweigh working for a company. Whilst working for a company is preferred by some, the working world is shifting to a model that is more innovative, creative and less reliant on the traditional ways of work.

Essay 59 – Many people choose to be self-employed

Gt writing task 2 / essay sample # 59.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organisation. Why might this be the case? What could be the disadvantage of being self-employed?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

In this day and age, more and more people tend to opt for self-employment instead of working for corporations. Several reasons contribute to this phenomenon, and there are some drawbacks of being self-employed too, which will be discussed in this essay.

The growing number of startups pertains to young entrepreneurs because of leading-edge technology, supportive government, and changing family attitudes. Business models and structures are now highly conducive to startups with the advancement of technology. That is to say, young people, these days, can solve our daily life issues by innovations with the help of cutting-edge technology. Likewise, today’s governments are incredibly supportive to young entrepreneurs than ever before. The states are coming up with lucrative incentives to attract self-employment. Similarly, families, nowadays, encourage the young to be entrepreneurs and thus risk-taking appetite of youngsters has increased dramatically. A case in point is one of my school friends. She developed a boast machine when she was just 13. Her blog engine notched up huge gains, and her venture has become popular nationwide.

However, like everything else on the earth, self-employment suffers from shortcomings. The most obvious one is the resources. In most cases, startup entrepreneurs embark on a business venture with a shoestring budget whereas their counterparts are well-resourced. It gives the rivals a competitive advantage in product development, marketing, and sales. They use this edge to flame out the nascent entrepreneurs when they pose threats. Take my case as an example. Despite cutting-edge features, one of my friends’ ride-hailing app was eliminated due to Uber’s advertising budget. Likewise, startup enterprises usually entail a high risk of failure. Functioning under such huge risk can blur an entrepreneur’s strategic vision.

To reiterate, self-employment is prevalent among the young of-late. Several factors such as encouraging governments, emerging technology, and positive family outlook influence the youngsters’ decision. But every venture comes with some cons and the young should be aware of them.

One Comment to “Essay 59 – Many people choose to be self-employed”

Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organisation.

Why might this be the case? What could be the disadvantage of being self-employed?

In today’s highly competitive work environment, it is crucial to find satisfaction and security in professions. People, these days, give preference to self-employment instead of getting a job in a company or organization. This essay will discuss the reason for this trend and will suggest some drawbacks of a self-employed career choice.

The main cause for people choosing careers like being a freelancer or opening up a business could be the need to achieve creative freedom and independence in one’s way of operation. While doing a job, one really loses the power to make choices that one wants. If someone is working in an architectural firm, for instance, then they will have to work on the designs after getting them approved by the head of the department or the higher chain of command. Their personal choices and ideas aren’t relevant and they just have to follow official procedures and commands of higher authority. However, a person who is working for himself only can do as per his individual wishes and might experience an escalation in passion for his work. This single factor drives so many people to start their business rather than working for a company. On top of that, career security is another important factor for which professionals want to have their own business or work independently. For example, four in every five private-sector employees in our country express their view that they are afraid that they may lose their job at any time.

The first disadvantage of running a business is that the income is not assured at the end of the month. Moreover, running a business means planning and worrying about the business all the time. A job holder may forget about the office after he or she leaves the office perimeter at the end of the day, but for a businessperson, there is no such time limit. Being an owner of an enterprise really puts mental and financial strain due to such issues.

To conclude, many people strive to achieve creative independence and work satisfaction by doing meaningful work as per one’s desire through opening up a new business or a firm. The major drawbacks of this trend are the lack of financial guarantee at the end of the month and mental pressure a business person has to endure.

Sample Essay

Many individuals nowadays choose to work for themselves rather than being employed in an organisation. The main reason behind this preference is people’s freedom to work solo and independently. Having said that, there are advantages to working for oneself. However, the major disadvantage is that there is no guaranteed paycheck every month.

People doing corporate jobs often find it hard to balance their work and personal lives. In the past, there were not many rivalries among industries. Most workers were only compelled to work eight hours a day, which means they still had plenty of time left for themselves after work. Nevertheless, the competition is becoming more fierce with every passing day, and as a result, many employees had to toil harder and longer hours to help their employers thrive. For instance, at Facebook, engineers are often asked to work during the weekend to deliver new features to stay ahead of its competitors, such as TikTok and Snapchat. Thus, many people have leapt to self-employment, hoping they can have more control over their time. Additionally, being self-employed gives the freedom to pursue one’s passion and experiment with various avenues, which is impossible in nine-to-five jobs.

However, there are disadvantages to being self-employed too. Primarily, there is a considerable risk of failure of a venture at any point in time due to a lack of guidance, abilities, experience, and risk management. Occasionally, people cannot push their bottom lines and lose their entire investment. Eventually, they may end up with a complete failure which further triggers the health issues such as hypertension and cardiac problems.

Although to pen down, I would write that young adults are very inclined to establish their own business to become rich and lead a luxurious lifestyle. Even so, running a successful venture is not everyone’s cup of tea due to the various risks.

Meaning – (of a person) having a paid job. Example – Workmen were employed to restore sections of the wall, generally up to a height of seven courses.

Meaning – a greater liking for one alternative over another or others. Example – His preference was for scenes of the great outdoors, painted in a vivid, dramatic style with strong contrasts of light and shade.

Meaning – competition for the same objective or for superiority in the same field. Example – When everything heated up, bodies were put on the line due to the school rivalries.

Meaning – an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm. Example – He fears that other quality stores will quit the city if it allows more discount stores to trade.

Meaning – work extremely hard or incessantly. Example – I gave my pony to a native and it began to toil up the hillside with the infantry.

Meaning – (of a child, animal, or plant) grow or develop well or vigorously. Example – Now that the soil is thoroughly warm, newly planted melon seedlings should thrive.

Meaning – a risky or daring journey or undertaking. Example – For days, she did not venture out for fear that she would be manhandled again.

Meaning – cause (an event or situation) to happen or exist. Example – It is only a question of time before a case triggers a significant outbreak here.

Meaning – jump or spring a long way, to a great height, or with great force. Example – He leaped forward, took off his donkey jacket, and wrapped it around her shoulders.

Meaning – relating to the heart. Example – Careful examination of the heart may reveal murmurs, extra sounds, or cardiac enlargement.

ielts essay on self employed

Sample Band 9 Essay

If one wants to work for money, there are really only two options, working for someone else for a salary and being self-employed. Most people are involved with these two options and they both have advantages and disadvantages.

Being self-employed means that the worker owns the business that is being done. This might be a small one-person business or a large company with hundreds of employees. The first advantage of this is the capacity to earn more money. If the business does very well, the income can be considerable and the owner of the company will receive the benefits. On the other hand, if business is not good, the owner’s income will be low. Self-employed people also have the benefit to some extent of choosing their working hours and holidays and they have the right to change anything within their business. With this autonomy, however, comes the pressure to succeed and the reliance on one’s employees, if there are any, to do their best to make the business thrive.

Salaried workers do not experience the same stress as the self-employed owners of companies. They might have stress in their duties, but the pressure that comes with keeping one’s own business operating successfully in order to support oneself and one’s family is just not felt by an employee. The employee also has a certain knowledge of his or her income, as the salary is usually fixed every month. The self-employed owner’s income often depends on how successful the business is. The employee’s fixed income, however, does not give much scope for earning large amounts more. In addition, an employee does not have the freedoms of the owner or the autonomy, and for many people, having control over their lives is a significant factor to their well-being.

It is certain that there are advantages and disadvantages for both being self-employed and salaried. I personally disagree that being salaried is better than being self-employed. I prefer the autonomy that being self-employed brings and, although there is more risk and pressure, this can lead to greater and more fulfilling rewards.
