University of Göttingen

Founded in 1737, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is a research university of international renown with strong focuses in research-led teaching. The University is distinguished by the rich diversity of its subject spectrum particularly in the humanities, its excellent facilities for the pursuit of scientific research, and the outstanding quality of the areas that define its profile.

A University with Tradition

The University bears the name of its founder Georg August, King George II of Great Britain, Elector and Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, (Hannover). In affinity with the spirit of the Enlightenment, Göttingen abandoned the supremacy of theology and set its faculties on an equal footing. As an academic location Göttingen was long regarded as the hub of the mathematical world.

University as a Foundation

Intensifying the process of internationalisation, promoting excellence in research and teaching, adopting Bachelor’s and Master’s degree structures, giving all levels of the University greater autonomy and self-responsibility, optimising resource allocation: These steps characterise the reforms recently undertaken at the University. At the beginning of 2003, the Georg-August-Universität became the first German university with a comprehensive range of disciplines to assume the legal status of a foundation under public law.

Göttingen Campus

Almost all academic disciplines including medicine are represented in the 13 faculties, the exception being engineering sciences. Successful elements of which include jointly run collaborative research centres, junior research groups and infrastructure facilities, as well as combined professorial appointments. As a result of the integration process of the local research community, possibilities specific to Göttingen have arisen for the attracting and retaining of excellent researchers from both in and outside Germany, and top-quality research activities have been initiated and developed. Likewise, the advancement of exceptionally talented young scholars and scientists is a central strategic aim at the Georg-August-Universität.

Studying with Excellence

Approximately 30 000 young people currently study here, some eleven per cent of whom are from abroad. The range of degree courses on offer stands out both for the outstandingly good study facilities in the natural and life sciences and for the breadth of subject diversity in the humanities and social sciences. Such a spectrum of subjects enables overarching issues to be tackled with an interdisciplinary perspective. In its constantly expanding range of Master’s and Ph.D. programmes the University cultivates excellence and offers the proximity to research. Study programmes run in English, bi-national degrees and compulsory periods spent abroad prepare graduates for the international job market.

Fostering the Scientists and Scholars of Tomorrow

Doctoral training in Göttingen is concentrated in structured programmes based at four Graduate Schools: Georg August University School of Science (GAUSS) – Göttinger Graduiertenschule Gesellschaftswissenschaften (GGG) – Graduiertenschule für Geisteswissenschaften Göttingen (GSGG) – Graduate School Forest and Agricultural Sciences (GFA). The aim of these schools is to optimise the research and learning conditions for doctoral candidates, offering intensive supervision and a range of seminars designed to advance the training of first-class scientists.

A World-Class University Library

The founding of the Göttingen University Library in 1734 was a landmark: For the first time in library history the concept of a modern research library was put into practice and the institution became the first comprehensive academic library of European standing. Today, the Göttingen State and University Library of Lower Saxony (Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen, SUB) continues to hold a pole position. With over 7.8 million medial units, it is currently one of Germany´s largest libraries.

Graduate Schools

All PhD students at the University of Göttingen are member of a graduate school. The four graduate schools are tailored to the respective cultures of Humanities, Social -, Agricultural and Forest- as well as Natural Sciences and Mathematics (GSGG, GGG, GFA, GAUSS). The schools cooperate closely as Göttingen Interdisciplinary Graduate Schools (GIGS) to offer services for all doctoral students in doctoral programs and research training groups as well as for doctoral candidates working individually.

The main tasks of the graduate schools include further development of structured PhD programs in cooperation with the faculties, supporting PhD students and networking, integrating international PhD students, qualifying PhD students as well as providing services and support programs.

Graduate School of Humanities Göttingen (GSGG)

The Graduate School of Humanities Göttingen (GSGG) was founded in 2005 as a joint institution of the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Theology. The main objective of our work to provide all our graduating members with a fundamental structure to their doctoral phase as well as the most specific support possible. The GSGG relies on the mutual commitment of its graduating and supervising members who research and teach at one of the more than 40 institutes and centres for Humanities at the University of Göttingen. Currently, 450 doctoral candidates are members of the GSGG, most of whom work towards their doctorate individually. About 40 members are working within one of three doctoral programmes.

Göttingen Graduate School of Social Sciences (GGG)

The Göttingen Graduate School of Social Sciences (GGG) was founded 2005 and unites PhD students and supervisors of Social Sciences at the Faculties of Law, Social and Economic Sciences plus parts of the Faculties of Agricultural Sciences, Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology. At GGG professional skills for career path in academia and society are highly focused as well as the development of diversity-competence while supporting the heterogeneous PhD students. Currently, about 1,100 doctoral students are working towards doctorates in 10 doctoral programs under the umbrella of the GGG.

Graduate School of Forest and Agricultural Sciences Göttingen (GFA)

The GFA was established in 2015 to complete the Göttingen model of Graduate schools with the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences as well as the Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology. The Graduate School provides assistance for the PhD students beginning with the admission to doctoral studies and ending with completing the degree “Ph.D.”, “Dr. forest.”, “Dr. sc. agr.”, “Dr. rer nat”, or “Dr. rer. pol.”. Currently, about 500 PhD students study and teach in one of the doctoral programs of the GFA.

Georg August University School of Science (GAUSS)

The GAUSS graduate school of mathematics and natural sciences was founded in 2005 by the five faculties of Mathematics and Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Geoscience and Geography, and Biology and Psychology. In addition to the five founding faculties, the Faculty of Medicine, the Max Planck institutes for Solar System Research, Biophysical Chemistry, Experimental Medicine, and Dynamics and Self-Organization as well as the German Primate Center and the German Aerospace Center - Göttingen site, are also involved in GAUSS. Currently, over 1.650 doctoral candidates are working towards doctorates in 30 programs at the GAUSS graduate school.

Part of the GAUSS graduate school is the Göttingen Graduate Center for Neurosciences, Biophysics and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB) , which was founded in 2007. The center is based on a joint initiative of four faculties of the University of Göttingen (Biology, Chemistry, Medicine, Physics), the Max Planck Institutes for Biophysical Chemistry, Experimental Medicine, and Dynamics and Self-Organization as well as the German Primate Center (DPZ). It currently includes fifteen doctoral programs and over 500 doctoral students. The GGNB was successful in the first and second rounds of the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments. Four International Max Planck Research Schools are part of the GGNB.

International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS)

The International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS) are an excellent example for the cooperation between the University and the local Max Planck Institutes, providing young scientists with excellent research conditions to promote their individual careers. Five International Max Planck Research Schools are located on the Göttingen Campus:

  • IMPRS for Molecular Biology
  • IMPRS for Neurosciences
  • IMPRS Physics of Biological and Complex Systems
  • IMPRS for Solar System Science at the University of Göttingen
  • IMPRS for Genome Science

Max Planck School Matter to Life

The doctoral program at the Max Planck School Matter to Life will offer highly talented and motivated students a superior training in the fundamentals, methods and approaches in the rapidly developing field of Matter to Life. "What, exactly, is life?", and "Can life-like processes, functions and objects be quantitatively simulated, predicted and created in the laboratory?" are the overarching questions addressed in the curriculum and research training. Courses are held in English (75%) and German (25%).

The PhD programme Geoscience is based on three research foci of the faculty. These are:

1. Coupled processes among the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere

This research focus examines geological, mineralogical, crystallographic and biological processes in the formation of minerals and rocks. Interactions at different geological and biological interfaces are investigated. At these interfaces, mass transfer processes take place, beginning in the low-thermal region and extending to the upper temperature limit for life (110-120°C).

2. Dynamics and transport processes of the lithosphere

This priority focuses on the fundamental processes that control the dynamics of the lithosphere and the design of the earth's surface. The extent and nature of volcanic eruptions are determined by the physical properties of melts and their chemical evolution in the magma reservoir. The geochemical composition, isotopic tracers and the physical properties of the magmas are examined analytically and experimentally. They make it possible to reconstruct the origin, depth and activity of magma chambers.

3. Coupled processes in georeservoirs

The development of geological reservoirs in the earth's crust (georeservoirs) for applications beyond hydrocarbon extraction has been intensified worldwide over the past decades. For example, the use of geothermal energy as a renewable, base-load energy source and the storage of gases and energy in geological formations are of growing economic and societal importance.

By participating in a number of externally funded projects, doctoral candidates learn to perform independent scientific work. Through active participation in the scientific affairs of the faculty or the Geoscience Centre, students acquire knowledge and skills that go beyond a curricular programme of study.

The focus of the PhD programme lies on the individual research of the PhD students (160 ECTS are gained by dissertation and defence), which is accompanied by a variety of courses: 20 ECTS are gained by completing courses, one compulsory course on theory and methods is included, and three elective courses are part of the programme (e.g., on reflecting research, scientific communication, scientific teaching, key competencies, etc.). Students are free to decide on the specific courses they will complete during each semester.

Fees are around 400 EUR per semester. The fees include a prepaid semester ticket that entitles students to use regional trains (in Lower Saxony and Bremen) and city buses in Göttingen free of charge. Students of the University of Göttingen receive discounts for cultural events. Meals and drinks are also available at reduced prices at all university canteens. Fees: http://www.uni-goettingen.de/fee Semester ticket: http://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/16432.html

The average cost of living in Göttingen is modest compared to other major university cities in Germany. Currently, expenses for accommodation, food, health insurance and books are about 850 EUR per month. Please note that fees for health insurance may vary according to age.
