The energy story

Overview of the energy story.

Whether we know it or not, we tell stories that involve matter and energy everyday. We just don’t often use terminology associated with scientific discussions of matter and energy.

The setup: a simple statement with implicit details You tell your roommate a story about how you got to campus by saying, "I biked to campus today." In this simple statement are several assumptions that are instructive to unpack, even if they may not seem very critical to include explicitly in a casual conversation between friends over transportation choices.

An outsider's reinterpretation of the process To illustrate this, imagine an external observer, such as an alien being watching the comings and goings of humans on Earth. Without the benefit of knowing much of the implied meanings and reasonable assumptions that are buried in our language, the alien's description of the morning cycling trip would be quite different than your own. What you described efficiently as "biking to campus" might be more specifically described by the alien as a change in location of a human body and its bicycle from one location (the apartment, termed position A) to a different location (the university, termed position B). The alien might be even more abstract and describe the bike trip as the movement of matter (the human body and its bike) between an initial state (at location A) to a final state (at location B). Furthermore, from the alien's standpoint, what you'd call "biking" might be more specifically described as the use of a two-wheeled tool that couples the transfer of energy from the electric fields in chemical compounds to the acceleration of the two-wheeled, tool-person combo that heats its environment. Finally, buried within the simple statement describing how we got to work is also the tacit understanding that the mass of the body and bike were conserved in the process (with some important caveats we’ll look at in future lectures) and that some energy was transfered around the system and environment to enable the movement of the body from position A to position B.

Note: possible discussion

Details are important. What if you owned a fully electric bike, and the person you were talking with didn’t know that? What important details might this change about the “everyday” story you told that the more detailed description would have cleared up? How would the alien’s story have changed? In what scenarios might these changes be relevant?

As this simple story illustrates, irrespective of many factors, the act of creating a full description of a process includes some accounting of what happened to the matter, what happened to the energy, and almost always some description of a mechanism that describes how changes in matter and energy of a system were brought about.

To practice this skill in BIS2A, we will make use of something we like to call the "Energy Story." You may be asked to tell an "energy story" in class, to practice telling energy stories on your lecture study guides, and to use the concept on your exams. In this section, we focus primarily on introducing the concept of an energy story and explaining how to tell one. It is worth noting that the term "energy story" is used almost exclusively in BIS2A (and has a specific meaning in this class). This precise term will not appear in other courses at UC Davis (at least in the short term), or if it appears, is not likely to be used in the same manner. You can think of “The Energy Story” as a systematic approach to creating a statement or story describing a biological process or event. Your BIS2A instructors have given this approach a short name (energy story) so that we can all associate it with the common exercise. That way, when the instructor asks the class to tell or construct an energy story, everyone knows what is meant.

Definition 1: energy story

An energy story is a narrative describing a process or event. The critical elements of this narrative are as follows:

  • Identify at least two states (e.g., start and end) in the process.
  • Identify and list the matter in the system and its state at the start and end of the process.
  • Describe the transformation of the matter that occurs during the process.
  • Account for the “location” of energy in the system at the start and end of the process.
  • Describe the transfer of energy that happens during the process.
  • Identify and describe mechanism(s) responsible for mediating the transformation of matter and transfer of energy.

A complete energy story will include a description of the initial reactants and their energetic states as well as a description of the final products and their energetic states after the process or reaction is completed.

We argue that the energy story can be used to communicate all of the useful details that are required to describe nearly any process. Can you think of a process that cannot be adequately described by an energy story? If so, describe such a process.

Example 2: energy story example

Let us suppose that we are talking about the process of driving a car from "Point A" to "Point B" (see Figure 1).

car_figure.jpg

Figure 1: This is a schematic of a car moving from a starting position, "Point A," to an end point, "Point B." The blue rectangle depicted in the back of the car represents the level of the gasoline; the purple, squiggly line near the exhaust pipe represents the exhaust; squiggly blue lines on top of the car represent sound vibrations; and the red shading represents areas that are hotter than at the start. Source: created by Marc T. Facciotti (own work)

Let's step through the Energy Story rubric :

1. Identify at least two states (e.g., start and end) in the process.

In this example, we can easily identify two states. The first state is the nonmoving car at "Point A," the start of the trip. The second state, after the process is done, is the nonmoving car at "Point B."

2. Identify and list the matter in the system and its state at the start and end of the process.

In this case, we first note that the "system" includes everything in the figure—the car, the road, the air around the car, etc.

It is important to understand the we are going to apply the physical law of conservation of matter. That is, in any of the processes that we will discuss, matter is neither created or destroyed. It might change form, but one should be able to account for everything at the end of a process that was there at the beginning.

At the beginning of the process, the matter in the system consists of the following: 1. The car and all the stuff in it 2. The fuel in the car (a special thing in the car) 3. The air (including oxygen) around the car. 4. The road 5. The driver

At the end of the process, the matter in the system is distributed as follows: 1. The car and all the stuff in it is in a new place (let's assume, aside from the fuel and position, that nothing else changed). 2. There is less fuel in the car, and it too is in a new place. 3. The air has changed; it now has less molecular oxygen, more carbon dioxide, and more water vapor. 4. The road did not change (let's assume it didn't change—other than a few pebbles that moved around). 5. The driver did not change (let's assume she didn't change—though we'll see by the end of the term that she did, at least a little). However, the driver is now in a different place.

3. Describe the transformation of the matter that occurs during the process.

What happened to the matter in this process? Thanks to a lot of simplifying assumptions, we see that two big things happened. First, the car and its driver changed positions—they went from "Point A" to "Point B." Second, we note that some of the molecules in the fuel, which used to be in the car as a liquid, have changed forms and are now mostly in the form of carbon dioxide and water vapor (purple blob coming out of the tailpipe). Some of the oxygen molecules that used to be in the air are now also in a new place as part of the carbon dioxide and water that left the car.

4. Account for the “location” of energy in the system at the start and end of the process.

It is again important to understand that we are going to invoke the physical law of conservation of energy. That is, we stipulate that the energy in the system cannot be created or destroyed, and therefore, the energy that is in the system at the start of the process must still be there at the end of the process. It may have been redistributed, but you should be able to account for all the energy.

At the beginning of the process, the energy in the system is distributed as follows: 1. The energy is tied up in the associations between atoms that make up the matter of the car. 2. The energy is tied up in the associations between atoms that make up the fuel. 3. The energy is tied up in the associations between atoms that make up the air. 4. The energy is tied up in the associations between atoms that make up the road. 5. The energy is tied up in the associations between atoms that make up the driver. 6. For all the things above, we can also say that there is energy in the molecular motions of the atoms that make up the stuff.

At the end of the process, the energy in the system is distributed as follows: 1.

This is interesting in some sense, because the lists are about the same. We know that the amount of energy stored in the car has decreased, because there is less fuel. Something must have happened.

5. Describe the transfer of energy that happens during the process.

In this particular example, it is the transfer of energy among the components of the system that is most interesting. As we mentioned, there is less energy stored in the gas tank of the car at the end of the trip, because there is now less fuel. We also know intuitively (from real-life experience) that the transfer of energy from the fuel to something else was instrumental in moving the car from "Point A" to "Point B." So, where did this energy go? Remember, it didn't just disappear. It must have moved somewhere else in the system.

Well, we know that there is more carbon dioxide and water vapor in the system after the process. There is energy in the associations between those atoms (atoms that used to be in the fuel and air). So some of the energy that was in the fuel is now in the exhaust. Let's also draw from real-life experience again, and state that we know that parts of our car have gotten hot by the end of the trip (e.g., the engine, transmission, wheels/tires, exhaust, etc.). For the moment, we'll just use our intuition, and say that we understand that making something hot involves some transfer of energy. So we can reasonably postulate that some of the energy in the fuel went (directly or indirectly) into heating the car, parts of the road, and the exhaust—and thus the environment around the car. An amount of energy also went into accelerating the car from zero velocity to whatever speed it traveled at, but most of that energy eventually became heat when the car came to a stop.

This is a bit of a hand-wavy explanation, and we'll learn how to do a better job throughout the quarter. The main point is that we should be able to add all the energy of the system at the beginning of the process (in all the places it is found) and at the end of the process (in all the places it is found), and those two values should be the same.

6. Identify and describe mechanism(s) responsible for mediating the transformation of matter and transfer of energy.

Finally, it is useful to try understanding how those transformations of matter and transfers of energy might have been facilitated. For the sake of brevity, we might just say that there was a complicated mechanical device (the engine) that helped facilitate the conversion of matter and transfer of energy about the system and coupled this to the change in position of the car. Someone interested in engines would, of course, give a more detailed explanation.

In this example, we made a bunch of simplifying assumptions to highlight the process and to focus on the transformation of the fuel. But that's fine. The more you understand about the processes, the finer details you can add. Note that you can use the Energy Story rubric for describing your understanding (or looking for holes in your understanding) of nearly any process (certainly in biology). In BIS2A, we'll use the Energy Story to get an understanding of processes as varied as biochemical reactions, DNA replication, the function of molecular motors, etc.

First: We will be working on many examples of the energy story throughout the course—do not feel that you need to have mastery over this topic today.

Second: While it is tempting to think all this is superfluous or not germane to your study of biology in BIS2A, let this serve as a reminder that your instructors (those creating the course midterm and final assessments) view it as core material. We will revisit this topic often throughout the course but need you to get familiar with some of the basic concepts now.

This is important material and an important skill to develop—do not put off studying it because it doesn't "look" like "biology" to you today. The academic term moves VERY quickly, and it will be difficult to catch up later if you don't give this some thought now.

Renewable Energy Persuasive Essay

Robert Caba

Dr. Freymiller

12 April 2016

Out with the Old, In with the Re(new)able

The United States has been operating as a country using limited fossil fuels, but what happens when it all runs out? Would it not be more beneficial to never find out? Renewable energy, energy that is not depleted after its use, is limitless and more sustainable than any other source in energy history. To initiate the clean energy movement is expensive, but there are countless benefits ranging from individual to global impacts in going completely renewable. The first recorded use of renewable energy was harnessing wind power to drive ships over water about 7000 years ago (Darling). However, renewable energy has been around as long as Earth has existed: wind, sun, geothermal, biomass and many more. Clean energy sources can be harnessed to produce electricity, process heat, fuel and other chemicals with significantly less impact on the environment. In 2014, renewable energy sources accounted for fourteen percent of America’s total electricity use (“Renewable Energy Sources”), a four percent incline from the prior year. Completely diverting from fossil fuels to renewable energy clearly is not a new concept for a select few of innovative countries. A few countries, for example, are Costa Rica, Norway and Iceland, all of whom have ran on renewable energy for the entire 2015 calendar year, diving deep into their own land’s resources and utilizing volcanic presence to produce energy (Rosecrance & Thompson 7). Following in the footsteps of Costa Rica and a few other third world countries, major economic powerhouses and biggest users of fossil fuels like the United States should convert to clean energy as a way to benefit the economy, environment and overall health of the country.

As a consumer, one is worried about how abandoning a safe form of energy and transitioning to something new can help or hurt their wallet. Not only can renewable energy help save money, it can also help make money. A 150 billion dollar investment into this new industry would result in 1.7 million job opportunities, reducing the unemployment rate in America by an entire percentage (Pollin & Heintz). The reason for the potential high employment rate is because the industry is labor intensive in the means of installation and maintenance, requiring a lot of manpower for ultimate success. However, the more we wait the more future benefits we are currently losing. In an American Solar Energy Association (ASES) report in 2009, they stated “the 2008 predictions for renewable energy industry in 2030 are significantly lower than the 2007 predictions (National Research Council 169).” Unlike fossil fuels, which are subject to volatile pricing fluctuating over time depending on the market, renewable energy is relatively “free” after installation, using natural resources. The process of transportation and maintenance is minimized allowing prices to stay constant throughout the years. The only way price can head is down; for instance, clean energy is more affordable than 25 years ago. In particular, wind energy, the fastest growing source of power, prices have declined from forty cents per kilowatt per hour to less than five cents per kilowatt per hour (“The Energy Story”), a remarkable change and a huge upside in favor of the conversion. As time continues, technology should continue its progression resulting in cheaper mediums to acquire the energy. Despite of this, the conversion should take place now so results are maximized for the future. All in all, clean energy can both save Americans money while help them make money, the perfect win-win for producers and consumers alike.

Abstaining from burning countless, yet limited fossil fuels every day and polluting the environment is the single biggest benefactor for moving towards a cleaner approach. Not only would greenhouse gas emissions, as well as other pollutants that cause smog and acid rain, reach minimal levels, but also the country is consequently assisting in the reduction of the global warming speed and effects. Unlike fossil fuels, which are unable to be replenished easily, renewable energy is limitless, feeding from natural resources. With the global and national population expected to continue rising, the demand for energy will follow. There is a multitude of different approaches to acquire renewable energy including the most used types: solar and wind power. Specifically, solar energy is the epitome of sustainability and efficiency, calculated through production and prices. Despite the massive amounts of energy used yearly nationwide, “the sunlight falling on the United States in one day contains more than twice the energy we consume in an entire year ( The Energy Story ).” As for wind power, “California [alone] has enough wind gusts to produce 11 percent of the world’s wind electricity ( The Energy Story).” Wind turbines take up a lot of space but still allow the area around it, usually farms, to be used regularly. In the United Kingdom, for comparison, the government set a target for renewable energy to make up 15 percent of their total energy expense by 2020. This motive results in a 34 percent cut in the country’s carbon emission in the same time span (National Research Council 180). Needless to say, renewable energy will make landmark strides in the progression towards a cleaner, better environment. The most important thing on this Earth is this Earth, and it’s society’s job to maintain it.

As well as helping the environment and wallets, renewable energy can help with everyone’s health. By cutting the emission of greenhouse gasses and fossil fuels, air pollution decreases. Air pollution, primarily those contributed through coal burning power plants emitting fine-particulate pollutants, is most associated with causing health problems, chiefly lung cancer. The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) predicts that conversion, or even standards, will prevent at least 100,000 heart attacks and asthma attacks per year. Additionally, EPA also estimates a projected 1,100 billion dollar income in health benefits due to avoiding illnesses and deaths (U.S. EPA). As a form of partnership, the health industry could invest a portion of this money into the clean air movement due to its beneficial health impacts and help make installation cheaper. A majority of these pollutants are associated with dangerous levels of climate change, this century’s biggest threat to human health. Climate change, a change in global climate patterns, “will increasingly jeopardize the fundamental requirements for health, including clean urban air, safe and sufficient drinking-water, a secure and nutritious food supply, and adequate shelter (World Health Organization).” Climate change is the main contributor and accelerator towards global warming. Global warming increases the risk of two deadly diseases: Plague and Ebola, to name a few. For Plague, changes in temperature and rainfall will affect rodent populations as well as the infected fleas they carry. Additionally, Ebola outbreaks tend to follow serious downpours or droughts, a likely result of climate change (Biello). The movement would not only lower the pollution rate and risk of infection, but also save countless lives across the globe during the process.

America, along with most other countries, needs to initiate their plans towards a more sustainable, cleaner form of energy. Renewable energy helps increase the production of the economy through the addition of million of jobs. Simultaneously, energy prices would be lower, also helping the consumer save money. However, it is vital to start now. The longer the wait, the less benefits are reaped. Likewise, the clean air movement will mark the beginning of recovery for the environment. Greenhouse gases and other emission will reach all time lows, possibly zero. This deduction is important to slow the rate of climate change and global warming. Stopping climate change and gas emissions in its tracks would also lead to more health benefits. There are dozens of deadly diseases and carriers that spawn from the irregular climate patterns. Also, climate change could affect physiological needs by lessening safe drinking water, food supply and shelter. The United States has a reputation of being an innovator, a leader for many countries. Why has it been so lackadaisical with something so important to everything in today’s society? It has a history of being scared of change; people are too comfortable with life as it is, but it could be better. With the United States recently moving in the right direction, it will be better.

500 words energy conservation essay.

Energy conservation refers to the efforts made to reduce the consumption of energy. The energy on Earth is not in unlimited supply. Furthermore, energy can take plenty of time to regenerate. This certainly makes it essential to conserve energy. Most noteworthy, energy conservation is achievable either by using energy more efficiently or by reducing the amount of service usage.

Energy Conservation Essay

Importance of Energy Conservation

First of all, energy conservation plays an important role in saving non-renewable energy resources. Furthermore, non-renewable energy sources take many centuries to regenerate. Moreover, humans consume energy at a faster rate than it can be produced. Therefore, energy conservation would lead to the preservation of these precious non-renewable sources of energy.

Energy conservation will reduce the expenses related to fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are very expensive to mine. Therefore, consumers are required to pay higher prices for goods and services. Energy conservation would certainly reduce the amount of fossil fuel being mined. This, in turn, would reduce the costs of consumers.

Consequently, energy conservation would strengthen the economy as consumers will have more disposable income to spend on goods and services.

Energy conservation is good for scientific research. This is because; energy conservation gives researchers plenty of time to conduct researches.

Therefore, these researchers will have more time to come up with various energy solutions and alternatives. Humans must ensure to have fossil fuels as long as possible. This would give me enough time to finding practical solutions.

Another important reason for energy conservation is environmental protection. This is because various energy sources are significantly harmful to the environment. Furthermore, the burning of fossil fuels considerably pollutes the atmosphere. Moreover, nuclear energy creates dangerous nuclear waste. Hence, energy conservation will lead to environmental protection.

Energy conservation would also result in the good health of humans. Furthermore, the pollution released due to energy sources is harmful to the human body. The air pollution due to fossil fuels can cause various respiratory problems. Energy sources can pollute water which could cause several harmful diseases in humans. Nuclear waste can cause cancer and other deadly problems in the human body.

Measures to Conserve Energy

Energy taxation is a good measure from the government to conserve energy. Furthermore, several countries apply energy or a carbon tax on energy users. This tax would certainly put pressure on energy users to reduce their energy consumption. Moreover, carbon tax forces energy users to shift to other energy sources that are less harmful.

Building design plays a big role in energy conservation. An excellent way to conserve energy is by performing an energy audit in buildings. Energy audit refers to inspection and analysis of energy use in a building. Most noteworthy, the aim of the energy audit is to appropriately reduce energy input.

Another important way of energy conservation is by using energy-efficient products. Energy-efficient products are those that use lesser energy than their normal counterparts. One prominent example can be using an energy-efficient bulb rather than an incandescent light bulb.

In conclusion, energy conservation must be among the utmost priorities of humanity. Mahatma Gandhi was absolutely right when he said, “the earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs but not every man’s greed”. This statement pretty much sums up the importance of energy conservation. Immediate implementation of energy conservation measures is certainly of paramount importance.

Energy: short essay on energy.

energy story essay

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Here is your short essay on Energy!

Energy is a primary input for almost all activities and is, therefore, vital for improvement in quality of life. Its use in sector such as industry, commerce, transport, telecommunications, wide range of agriculture and household services has compelled us to focus our attention to ensure its continuous supply to meet our ever increasing demands.

Energy related problems are not new. The energy related problems are as old as 2500 years ago. The early Romans and Greeks faced fuel shortage as wood was their primary source of energy. They had to import wood from very faraway places. Fossil fuel is still the main source of energy. Today we are facing the peak of oil and gas utilization. Fossil fuel resources took millions of years to form and are infinite.

These resources may be exhausted in a few hundred years. Historical evidence shows that world energy demand has increased at almost the same rate as gross world product (GWP). People living in industrialized or developed countries are a relatively small percentage of the world’s total population, but they consume a huge share of the total energy produced in the world.

The main issues regarding the energy problem in urban areas are:

(a) How to utilize the energy from non-renewable sources at their maximum efficiency.

(b) How to make use of renewable sources of energy or the alternative energy sources?

Energy policy today has two choices (paths). One path leads to the fossil fuels (hard path), which means continuing as we have been for a number of years i.e., emphasising energy quantity by finding more amount of fossil fuels and building much larger power plants.

The second path is the soft path which leads to the energy alternatives that emphasize energy quality and are also renewable, flexible and more environmental friendly. The soft path relies mainly on renewable energy i.e. sunlight, wind biomass, tidal energy etc.

There is a need to resort to energy management. This concept recognizes that no single energy source can possibly provide all the energy required by the source nation. Thus, the basic objective of the integrated energy management is to obtain sustainable energy and which should be realized at the local level. In addition, measures to conserve energy need to be followed.

Energy conservation is considered as a quick and economical way to solve the problem of power shortage as also a means of conserving the country’s finite sources of energy. Energy conservation measures are cost effective, require relatively small investments and have short gestation as well as pay back periods. The studies conducted by Energy Management Centre, New Delhi have indicated that there is about 25% potential of energy conservation in the industrial sector.

100 Words Essay On One Step Towards Green And Clean Energy

Green energy is generated from natural resources such as sunlight, wind or water. It often comes from renewable energy sources and includes wind energy, solar energy, geothermal energy and hydroelectric power .

These energy sources can help to reduce pollution and have several advantages such as minimal maintenance cost, cost savings and storage capacities. Human behavior of contaminating the earth with hazardous wastes and garbage degrades and pollutes the environment.

A good approach will be to work to transform these wastes into biogas, which is a renewable energy source. Turning to the use of green energy is an excellent strategy to alleviate global warming and maintain a clean and healthy environment.

200 Words Essay On One Step Towards Green And Clean Energy

The world needs cleaner energy sources. ‘Go green’ is an earth-friendly approach to living. It means as an individual as well as a community in a way that is friendly to the environment and is sustainable for the earth.

Advantages Of Green Energy

Green and clean energy sources have very low or zero carbon emissions. They are environment- friendly.

Another advantage is that it is irrelevant to rely on any country to supply renewable energy resources, unlike its non-renewable counterparts.

In 2019 India also announced that it would be additionally doubling its renewable energy target from 175 GW by 2022 to 450 Giga-Watt.

Green energy is really beneficial for the environment because it does not affect nature in any way. It is one of the alternative energy sources that has received distinct attention from governments and various organizations to keep the planet clean.

Green energy can reduce the effects of greenhouse gasses produced in the atmosphere by fossil fuels and other sources.

We may utilize solar-powered stoves and other solar-powered gadgets to help us harness the sun’s energy. It will aid in the conservation of energy and be convenient in the future. Moreover, good energy resources will be obtainable in the future.

500 Words Essay On One Step Towards Green And Clean Energy

The present era is the era of industrialisation, to which energy is essential. For most of this work, traditional sources of energy are used. These traditional sources of energy have detrimental effects on the environment. Hence, a helpful alternative will be to turn to sources of green and clean energy.

Green energy can be defined as a renewable energy source because it is never exhausted. It's a sustainable energy source for generations. Wind turbines are a well-known example of green and clean energy. They generate electricity by working with the wind.

This creates zero carbon emissions. Windmills are another source of renewable energy. Geothermal energy is another example of a renewable energy resource. They are found in the earth's crust. They are extracted by drilling.

India’s Steps Towards Green And Clean Energy

Recent studies have shown that India's dominance in green and clean energy is significant. The country is trying to bring a revolutionary change in the field of generating electricity through solar energy and wind energy. The government has implemented a solar pumping programme for irrigation in the fields. Different types of solar devices save electricity and gas. They will also be used by future generations.

Fusion Energy

A recent milestone in nuclear fusion research was announced by U.S Scientists. It made a breakthrough in fusion, the process that powers the sun and stars that one day could provide a cheap source of electricity. The results are good news for advocates of nuclear energy as a clean alternative to fossil fuels.

This energy source produces no greenhouse gasses and minimal waste compared to conventional energy sources. It could produce limitless, carbon-free energy to supply electricity needs without raising global temperatures and worsening climate change. Are Electric Vehicles Actually Good for the Climate?

There's a strong consensus that EVs are better for the environment than fossil fuel-driven cars. How do you convince the doubters?

An electric vehicle charger with a white electric vehicle sitting in the background.

Research shows electric vehicles are better for the climate and the environment than fossil-fuel driven cars.

When it comes to discussions about energy and emerging technology, it's not always easy to find a consensus. But from the United States Environmental Protection Agency and MIT researchers to BloombergNEF and Columbia Law School's Sabin Center for Climate Change Law , one opinion is consistent: Electric vehicles are better for the environment than their fossil-fueled counterparts.

Why, then, do questions over that conclusion persist?

For those working in the industry or advocating for clean energy, these recurring questions are nothing new.

"I think that's just a natural part of that sort of adoption curve," said Ben Prochazka , executive director of nonpartisan, nonprofit organization The Electrification Coalition.

Are EVs an improvement over cars powered by fossil fuels?

The calculation behind the claim that EVs are better for the environment is a complicated one, and must take into account everything from the vehicles themselves to the fuel they use and the processes required for both.

But there is a general consensus.

As a 2019 study led by David Keith, a senior lecturer in system dynamics at the MIT Sloan School of Management, found: "The rapid decarbonisation of transportation is critical if global efforts to mitigate the worst possible impacts of anthropogenic climate change are to be successful."

Albert Gore is the executive director of the Zero Emission Transportation Association, an industry-backed coalition of manufacturing companies and others in the transportation and energy world -- from LG and Siemens to Uber and the Tennessee Valley Authority -- working toward the adoption of electric vehicles for both personal and commercial use.

In his experience, people often forget that the conversation around EVs and vehicles in general isn't just about the emissions they individually create, but the broader environment around how they're built, fueled and more. And often, people don't realize how much cleaner the electric grid is when compared with fossil fuels, especially as an increasing amount of our grid is powered by renewable sources .

"I think it may be surprising to some folks that the carbon intensity of electricity on average is much, much lower than for gasoline as a transportation fuel," Gore said. "And gasoline is not really getting much cleaner. Electricity is getting cleaner very, very quickly."

energy story essay

What environmental challenges do EVs present?

Just because EVs are, in general, a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels doesn't mean they don't come with their own set of challenges and environmental hazards. And for those opposed to electric vehicles -- for one reason or another -- those challenges take front stage.

For example, in March, a New York Post article claimed a 2022 study that had "attracted a wave of attention this week after being cited in a Wall Street Journal op-ed " had claimed "electric vehicles release more toxic particles into the atmosphere and are worse for the environment than their gas-powered counterparts."

In fact, that study by UK-based Emissions Analytics -- who describes their focus as "real-world tailpipe emissions testing" -- was largely centered on the fact that tire particulate wear emissions were 1,000 times worse than exhaust emissions, and that heavier EVs can lead to more tire particulate wear emissions than their lighter gas-powered counterparts.

But focusing on that one element doesn't paint a full picture, and it doesn't reckon with the production and refining of the fuel itself. And often, that conversation is too nuanced and complicated for quick armchair assessments.

While the production of EVs -- involving different materials and production processes than traditional vehicles -- requires different things, those resources aren't necessarily worse or more harmful for the environment. And even if the negative outcomes of their production can rival traditional cars, that impact is offset through usage over a small period of time. And as more EVs are built and purchased, those processes are being refined.

"We're transitioning from a fossil fuel economy to potentially a mineral-based economy, and anything we do ultimately has an impact," Prochazka said. "So it's, 'How do we have the least amount of impact?' It's important, as we do this transition, that we're moving towards transportation education. At this point, it's only a question of 'when' not 'if.' But as we transition, we've got to think through how we make sure we have access to critical minerals in a way that is the highest environmental standards and the highest labor standards and that we're sourcing them from countries that share our democratic values. All those things become important."

energy story essay

How can the EV industry convince its doubters?

Advocates for EVs know that improving both adoption and trust in the technology won't happen overnight. But that inevitably slow crawl doesn't make the effort to educate and inform any less urgent.

And for those who hope to see them dominate the roads one day, it's about doubling down on the benefits expected to come from wider adoption of EVs.

"EVs are the only vehicle on the road that can get cleaner over time," Prochazka said. "You plug into a grid and the grid keeps getting cleaner. We're reducing our oil dependency, we're reducing our oil demand. It's good for economic and national security. But then, as the grid cleans up, we're also reducing the emissions profile of an EV and that's pretty amazing."

But the frequent questions and arguments over EVs' merits do frustrate supporters and those who have studied the issue, especially when they come in the form of misleading or inaccurate information.

"I think people can see something that feels more disruptive to their daily lives and things that they care about than maybe it is, and it can lend itself to some reactionary misunderstandings," Gore said. "I think that we have really been trying to consistently put credible, third-party, validated, academic, objective and truthful data out to folks who are grappling with these questions. … But it's hard to continue to try to be patient and just say, 'Things will shake out over time' when there is a really concerted and well-funded effort to ensure that doesn't happen."

But Prochazka has faith in a tried and true method: the word of mouth.

"There's the cul-de-sac effect," he said. "Once your neighbor gets one, you're much more likely to buy one. Once you've ridden in one, and then once you've driven and charged one, all of a sudden those things become demystified."
