Joel A. Tropp

Joel A. Tropp is Steele Family Professor of Applied & Computational Mathematics at the California Institute of Technology . His research centers on applied mathematics, machine learning, data science, numerical algorithms, and random matrix theory. Some of his best-known contributions include matching pursuit algorithms , randomized SVD algorithms , and matrix concentration inequalities .

Prof. Tropp attained the Ph.D. degree in Computational Applied Mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin in 2004, and he joined Caltech in 2007. He won the PECASE in 2008, and he was recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher in Computer Science each year from 2014–2018. He is co-founder and Section Editor of the SIAM Journal on Mathematics of Data Science ( SIMODS ), and he was co-chair of the inaugural 2020 SIAM Conference on the Mathematics of Data Science . Prof. Tropp was elected SIAM Fellow in 2019 and IEEE Fellow in 2020.

Andrew Stuart has research interests in applied and computational mathematics, and is interested in particular in the question of how to optimally combine complex mechanistic models with data. He joined Caltech in 2016 as Bren Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, after 17 years as Professor of Mathematics at the University of Warwick (1999--2016). Prior to that he was on the faculty in The Departments of Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University (1992--1999), and in the Mathematics Department at Bath University (1989--1992). He obtained his PhD from the Oxford University Computing Laboratory in 1986, and held postdoctoral positions in Mathematics at Oxford University and at MIT in the period 1986--1989

Areas of Research

Students in mathematics have the opportunity to work in many fields of current research. The main active areas of research by the faculty include the following:

  • Algebra. Finite group theory, algebraic groups, representation theory, symmetric functions, algebraic K-theory.
  • Algebraic Geometry. Moduli spaces, birational geometry, Hodge theory, Calabi-Yau varieties, arithmetic geometry.
  • Analysis. Classical real and complex analysis, harmonic analysis, functional analysis and operator theory, orthogonal polynomials; complex, smooth, and random dynamical and Hamiltonian systems, fractals, integrable systems, partial differential equations.
  • Combinatorics. Combinatorial designs and matrix theory, coding theory, extremal set theory.
  • Geometry and Topology. Low-dimensional topology, hyperbolic geometry, geometric group theory and foliations; symplectic geometry and topology, topological gauge theory, knot theory, and their interface with theoretical physics.
  • Mathematical Logic. Set theory and its interactions with analysis, combinatorics, dynamical systems, and model theory.
  • Mathematical Physics. Schrödinger operators, random matrices.
  • Noncommutative Geometry.
  • Number Theory. Algebraic number theory, automorphic forms, Shimura varieties, Galois representations, and L-functions.

Physical Facilities

The mathematics department is housed in the Ronald and Maxine Linde Hall of Mathematics and Physics and the W.K. Kellogg Radiation Laboratory. In addition to offices for the faculty and graduate students, there are classrooms, conference rooms, discussion areas, a lecture hall, and a lounge for informal gatherings of the students and staff. The mathematics collection is housed nearby in the Sherman Fairchild Library.

Teaching & Graduate Assistantships provide students with funding and with college teaching experience.

Study and explore concepts in areas including analysis, algebra, topology, and geometry, as well as the   deep connections between and among these subjects.

MS in Mathematics, Option in Applied Mathematics

Study applied math methods with an emphasis on computational skills.

MS in Mathematics, Option in Mathematics Education for Secondary School Teachers

A flexible program that includes coursework in mathematics and in mathematics education research & theory.

MS in Applied Statistics

Using conceptual foundations and statistical software packages ( SAS , R , and Python ), students are trained to analyze real world data appropriately and communicate their findings effectively. The tools learnt here will open the door for careers in data science and analytics, or prepare you for a PhD in a variety of related fields.
