“Dear Ms. Anne Ware,

I am applying for a position of Deck Cadet for your cruise line Oceania Cruises and have attached my resume for you.

I have a high school diploma and want to start my career with a cruise line and understand to do this I must start at the bottom and work my way up. I am strong and can handle storing cargo, handling gear, working with the rigging and running any other errands that are required of me. I understand that I will be required to preserve the paint on the ship along with any maintenance. I do not have a problem being away from home for extended periods of time as I know this is also a part of the job.

I am a quick learner and can pick up new concepts and tasks very quickly and would like to begin my training as an entry level seaman as soon as possible. I do know that this takes passing all the classes and putting in at least three years on a ship in order to make this career move. I am ready for the challenge and am prepared to work as many hours as necessary to make my dream come true.

I am physically able to handle the challenges of life on a ship and have spend many years on private fishing vessels so I know that being on water is not a problem for me. I am currently studying all I can about navigation, both traditional and the more technical types of navigating.

Please feel free to contact me any time at (555)-555-5555.

Respectfully,

Deck cadets are entry-level positions on a ship's deck department, responsible for assisting senior officers in various tasks related to ship operations and maintenance. In this article, we'll explore what a deck cadet job entails, where to find one, and how to apply.

What is a Deck Cadet Job?

A deck cadet job is an entry-level position in the maritime industry that involves working on the deck department of a ship. These jobs are important to the operation of the ship and require individuals who are willing to learn, work hard, and be adaptable in a maritime environment.

Deck cadets are responsible for assisting the senior officers in carrying out various tasks related to ship operations and maintenance. Some of the tasks that deck cadets may be responsible for include navigation, steering the ship, cargo handling, crane operation, routine maintenance tasks, and safety drills.

Deck cadets may work on different types of vessels, such as container ships, bulk carriers, oil tankers, and cruise ships. They may also work in different sea conditions, ranging from calm seas to rough weather conditions. Therefore, deck cadets must be physically fit, mentally resilient, and able to work well under pressure.

Deck cadets may also be required to work long hours, with some working up to 12 hours a day. However, the work schedule may vary depending on the type of vessel and the shipping company. Some shipping companies may have a schedule of 6 months on board and 6 months off, while others may have a schedule of 4 months on board and 2 months off.

To become a deck cadet, one must have a strong desire to work at sea, be willing to learn, and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Some shipping companies may also require candidates to have completed a maritime training program or have a degree in a related field.

Deck cadet jobs can be found through various sources such as job boards, company websites, and maritime training schools. Networking can also be a helpful tool in finding deck cadet jobs.

Importance of Deck Cadet Jobs in the Maritime Industry

Deck cadet jobs are essential to the functioning of the maritime industry. These entry-level positions provide an opportunity for aspiring seafarers to gain valuable experience and skills while working on board a vessel. The role of a deck cadet is to assist in the daily operations of the ship, working under the supervision of experienced crew members.

One of the key responsibilities of a deck cadet is to help with the maintenance of the ship. This includes tasks such as cleaning and painting the decks, maintaining safety equipment, and carrying out routine inspections. By performing these tasks, deck cadets learn about the different systems and equipment on board a vessel, as well as the importance of proper maintenance to ensure the safety and efficiency of the ship.

Another important aspect of a deck cadet's job is to assist with navigation and watchkeeping. This involves monitoring the ship's position and course, maintaining the ship's logbook, and keeping a lookout for other vessels or hazards. Deck cadets also assist with mooring and anchoring the ship when it is in port.

Deck cadets also play a crucial role in emergency situations. They are trained in emergency procedures and are responsible for assisting with the implementation of the ship's emergency response plan. This includes tasks such as launching lifeboats, operating firefighting equipment, and providing first aid.

Overall, deck cadet jobs are important to the maritime industry because they provide a vital source of labor and expertise. Aspiring seafarers who start out as deck cadets can gain valuable experience and skills that will prepare them for more advanced roles in the future. Deck cadets are an essential part of the ship's crew, working alongside experienced sailors to ensure the safety, efficiency, and profitability of the vessel. Deck Cadet CV format and structure

Recruiters and employers are busy, and if they can’t find the information they’re looking for in a few seconds, it could be game over for your application.

You need to format and structure your CV in a way which allows the reader to pick out your key information with ease, even if they’re strapped for time.

It should be clear, easily legible, well-organised and scannable – check out some simple tips and tricks below:

How to write a CV

Tips for formatting your Deck Cadet CV

  • Length: Whether you’ve got one year or three decades of experience, your CV should never be more than two sides of A4. Recruiters are busy people who’re often juggling numerous roles and tasks, so they don’t have time to read lengthy applications. If you’re a recent graduate or don’t have much industry experience, one side of A4 is fine.
  • Readability : To help busy recruiters scan through your CV, make sure your section headings stand out – bold or coloured text works well. Additionally, try to use bullet points wherever you can, as they’re far easier to skim through than huge paragraphs. Lastly, don’t be afraid of white space on your CV – a little breathing space is great for readability.
  • Design & format: The saying ‘less is more’ couldn’t be more applicable to CVs. Readability is key, so avoid overly complicated designs and graphics. A subtle colour palette and easy-to-read font is all you need!
  • Photos: Profile photos or aren’t a requirement for most industries, so you don’t need to add one in the UK – but if you do, just make sure it looks professional

Quick tip: Creating a professional CV style can be difficult and time-consuming when using Microsoft Word or Google Docs. To create a winning CV quickly, try our quick-and-easy CV Builder and use one of their eye-catching professional CV templates.

CV formatting tips

CV structure

Divide your CV into the following major sections when writing it:

  • Name and contact details  – Head your CV with your name and contact details, to let the reader know who you are and how to contact you.
  • CV profile – A brief paragraph which summarises your skills and experience and highlights why you’re a good match for the role.
  • Core skills list – A snappy, bullet-pointed list of your most relevant skills.
  • Work experience – A structured list of your work experience in reverse chronological order.
  • Education – A summary of any relevant qualifications or professional training you’ve completed.
  • Hobbies and interests – An optional section, which should only be used if your hobbies are relevant to the jobs you’re applying to.

Now you understand the basic layout of a CV, here’s what you should include in each section of yours.

Contact Details

Contact details

Make it easy for recruiters to get in touch, by heading your CV with your contact details.

There’s no need for excessive details – just list the basics:

  • Mobile number
  • Email address – Use a professional address with no nicknames.
  • Location – Just write your general location, such as ‘London’ or ‘Cardiff’ – there’s no need to put your full address.
  • LinkedIn profile or portfolio URL

Deck Cadet CV Profile

Grab the reader’s attention by kick-starting your CV with a powerful profile (or personal statement , if you’re a junior applicant).

This is a short introduction paragraph which summarises your skills, knowledge and experience.

It should paint you as the perfect match for the job description and entice recruiters to read through the rest of your CV.

CV profile

How to write a good CV profile:

  • Make it short and sharp: Recruiters are busy, so to ensure your profile is actually read, it’s best to keep it short and snappy. 3-5 punchy lines makes for the perfect profile.
  • Tailor it: No matter how much time you put into your CV profile, it won’t impress if it’s irrelevant to the role you’re applying for. Before you start writing, make a list of the skills, knowledge and experience your target employer is looking for. Then, make sure to mention them in your CV profile and throughout the rest of your application.
  • Don’t add an objective: Want to talk about your career goals and objectives? While the profile may seem like a good space to do so, they’re actually much better suited to your cover letter .
  • Avoid generic phrases: Focus on fact, not fluff. Phrases like “Committed and enthusiastic thought-leader” and “Dynamic problem solver” might sound fancy, but they’ll do nothing for your application. Not only do they sound cheesy, but they have no substance – stick to real skills and facts

Example CV profile for Deck Cadet

What to include in your deck cadet cv profile.

  • Experience overview: Showcase your aptitude for the job you are aiming for by giving a brief summary of your past work history , including the industries you have worked in, the kinds of employers you have served, and the roles you have held.
  • Targeted skills: Ensure that your profile highlights your key skills that are most relevant to your Deck Cadet, and tailor them to match the specific job you are applying for. To do this, refer to the job description to closely align your skills with their requirements.
  • Important qualifications: Be sure to outline your relevant Deck Cadet qualifications, so that anyone reading the CV can instantly see you are qualified for the jobs you are applying to.

Quick tip: If you are finding it difficult to write an attention-grabbing CV profile, choose from hundreds of pre-written profiles across all industries, and add one to your CV with one click in our quick-and-easy CV Builder . All profiles are written by recruitment experts and easily tailored to suit your unique skillset.

Core skills section

Next, you should create a bullet pointed list of your core skills , formatted into 2-3 columns.

Here, you should focus on including the most important skills or knowledge listed in the job advertisement.

This will instantly prove that you’re an ideal candidate, even if a recruiter only has time to briefly scan your CV.

Work experience

By this point, employers will be keen to know more detail about you career history.

Starting with your most recent role and working backwards, create a snappy list of any relevant roles you’ve held.

This could be freelance, voluntary, part-time or temporary jobs too. Anything that’s relevant to your target role is well-worth listing!

Work experience

Structuring each job

The structure of your work experience section can seriously affect its impact.

This is generally the biggest section of a CV, and with no thought to structure, it can look bulky and important information can get lost.

Use my 3-step structure below to allow for easy navigation, so employers can find what they are looking for:

Role descriptions

Provide a brief overview of the job as a whole, such as what the overriding purpose of your job was and what type of company you worked for.

Key responsibilities

Use bullet points to detail the key responsibilities of your role, highlighting hard skills, software and knowledge wherever you can.

Keep them short and sharp to make them easily digestible by readers.

Key achievements

Lastly, add impact by highlight 1-3 key achievements  that you made within the role.

Struggling to think of an achievement? If it had a positive impact on your company, it counts.

For example, you might increased company profits, improved processes, or something simpler, such as going above and beyond to solve a customer’s problem.

Sample job description for Deck Cadet CV

Completing practical training onboard commercial vessels as part of the merchant navy cadetship programme, participating in deck operations, maintenance, and emergency response procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with mooring and anchoring operations, adhering to ISM and MARPOL regulations
  • Perform regular deck maintenance tasks, such as chipping, painting, and preservation of deck surfaces and equipment to prevent corrosion
  • Conduct routine checks on navigation equipment and assist with chart plotting
  • Work with the team to oversee provisioning, stowage, and management of deck supplies

Quick tip: Create impressive job descriptions easily in our quick-and-easy CV Builder by adding pre-written job phrases for every industry and career stage.

Education section

At the bottom of your CV is your full education section. You can list your formal academic qualifications, such as:

  • GCSE’s

As well as any specific Deck Cadet qualifications that are essential to the jobs you are applying for. Note down the name of the qualification, the organisation at which you studied, and the date of completion.

Hobbies and interests

Although this is an optional section, it can be useful if your hobbies and interests will add further depth to your CV.

Interests which are related to the sector you are applying to, or which show transferable skills like leadership or teamwork, can worth listing.

On the other hand, generic hobbies like “going out with friends” won’t add any value to your application, so are best left off your CV.

Once you’ve written your Deck Cadet CV, you should proofread it several times to ensure that there are no typos or grammatical errors.

With a tailored punchy profile that showcases your relevant experience and skills, paired with well-structured role descriptions, you’ll be able to impress employers and land interviews.

Good luck with your next job application!
