1. Lead with solutions.

Have you ever met with a prospect who was excited about your product or service – and used your presentation to keep on selling? This is called over-selling, and it's the leading cause of death for sales presentations.

When you start your presentation, first lead with solutions. Don't talk about the benefits of your product's features or tell the prospect how great your company is.

Simply dive into how you're going to solve the deepest frustration your prospect is facing right now.

2. Incorporate case studies.

Once you've addressed the specific solutions you can provide to the prospect, it's time to add some color to your presentation.

Turn your sales presentation into an engaging story by sharing case studies of similar prospects and the results they've achieved with your help.

You’ll notice that the “Before” (pre-Digital Age) pictures in Facebook’s slides all display neutral faces. But the cover slide that introduces Facebook and the “After” slides have smiling faces on them.

This is important. The placement of those graphics is an intentional persuasion technique.

Studies by psychologists show that we register smiles faster than any other expression. All it takes is 500 milliseconds (1/20th of a second). And when participants in a study were asked to recall expressions, they consistently remembered happy faces over neutral ones.

What to do about it : Add a happy stock photo to your intro and “After” slides, and keep people in “Before” slides to neutral expressions.

Here are some further techniques used during the sales presentation:

Tactic #1: Use Simple Graphics

Use simple graphics to convey meaning without text.

Example: Slide 2 is a picture of a consumer’s hand holding an iPhone — something we can all relate to.

Use icons to show statistics you’re comparing instead of listing them out.

Tactic #3: Include Statistics

Include statistics that tie real success to the benefits you mention.

Why It Works:  Precise details prove that you are telling the truth.

Just like how you can’t drive from Marin County to San Francisco without the Golden Gate, you can’t connect a “Before” to an “After” without a bridge.

Add the mission statement of your company — something Contently does from Slide 1 of their deck. Having a logo-filled Customers slide isn’t unusual for sales presentations, but Contently goes one step further by showing you exactly what they do for these companies.

They then drive home the Before-After-Bridge Formula further with case studies:

Keep slides that have bullets to a minimum. No more than one in every five slides.

Tactic #3: Use Visual Examples

Follow up your descriptions with visual examples.

Example: After stating “15000+ vetted, ready to work journalists searchable by location, topical experience, and social media influence” on Slide 8, Contently shows what this looks like firsthand on slides 9 and 10.

Why It Works:  The same reason why prospects clamor for demos and car buyers ask for test drives. You’re never truly convinced until you see something for yourself.

Which is more effective for you?

This statement — “On average, Yesware customers save ten hours per week” — or this image:

Visuals are more effective every time. They fuel retention of a presentation from 10% to 65% .

But it’s not as easy as just including a graphic. You need to keep the design clean.

Clutter provokes anxiety and stress because it bombards our minds with excessive visual stimuli, causing our senses to work overtime on stimuli that aren’t important.

Why It Works:  Social proof drives action. It’s why we wait in lines at restaurants and put ourselves on waitlists for sold-out items.

People can only focus for eight seconds at a time. (Sadly, goldfish have one second on us.)

This means you need to cut to the chase fast.

Uber’s headlines in Slides 2-9 tailor the “After” picture to specific pain points. As a result, there’s no need to explicitly state a “Before.”

Slides 11-13 then continue touching on “Before” problems tangentially with customer quotes:

So instead of self-touting benefits, the brand steps aside to let consumers hear from their peers — something that sways 92% of consumers .

Leading questions may be banned from the courtroom, but they aren’t in the boardroom.

It’s part of what makes us tick as humans and what makes this design move effective. We focus on one thing and then ignore the rest. Here, DealTap puts the magnifying glass on paperwork vs. automated transactions.

Easy choice.

IRVING, Texas, May 7, 2024 - McKesson Corporation (NYSE:MCK) today announced results for the fourth quarter and fiscal year ended March 31, 2024.

Fiscal 2024 Fourth Quarter and Full Year Result Summary

McKesson reported fourth quarter results, marking the close to a strong fiscal 2024, underpinned by continued momentum across the enterprise, said Brian Tyler, chief executive officer. The results underscore the execution against our company priorities, differentiated capabilities within the oncology and biopharma services platforms, and the sustained strength of our core distribution businesses. We continue to leverage the breadth and depth of our assets, delivering meaningful outcomes for our customers, partners, patients, and communities. I want to thank all McKesson employees for their efforts, dedication, and contributions.

Looking ahead to fiscal 2025, we are well-positioned to further expand on the extensive range of our assets and capabilities, execute against our strategic initiatives, foster sustainable growth, and create long-term value for all stakeholders, said Mr. Tyler. We are excited about the opportunities ahead as we advance health outcomes for all.

Fourth quarter revenues were $76.4 billion, an increase of 11% from a year ago. Revenue increases were primarily driven by growth in the U.S. Pharmaceutical segment, resulting from increased prescription volumes, including higher volumes from specialty products, retail national account customers, and GLP-1 medications.

Fourth quarter earnings per diluted share from continuing operations was $6.02 compared to $5.71 a year ago, an increase of $0.31. Full year earnings per diluted share from continuing operations was $22.39 compared to $25.05 a year ago, a decrease of $2.66.

Fourth quarter Adjusted Earnings per Diluted Share was $6.18 compared to $7.19 a year ago, a decrease of 14%, driven by a higher tax rate, partially offset by a lower share count and growth in the U.S. Pharmaceutical segment. Full year Adjusted Earnings per Diluted Share was $27.44 compared to $25.94 a year ago, an increase of 6%, led by growth in the U.S. Pharmaceutical and Prescription Technology Solutions segments and a lower share count, partially offset by higher corporate expenses.

For the full year, McKesson returned $3.3 billion of cash to shareholders, which included $3.0 billion of common stock repurchases and $314 million of dividend payments. During the fiscal year, McKesson generated cash from operations of $4.3 billion, and invested $687 million in capital expenditures, resulting in Free Cash Flow of $3.6 billion.

U.S. Pharmaceutical Segment

Fourth Quarter

  • Revenues were $68.8 billion, an increase of 12%, driven by increased prescription volumes, including higher volumes from specialty products, retail national account customers, and GLP-1 medications.
  • Segment Operating Profit was $1.1 billion. Adjusted Segment Operating Profit was $901 million, an increase of 5%, driven by growth in the distribution of specialty products to providers and health systems and increased contributions from our generics program.
  • Revenues were $278.7 billion, an increase of 16%, driven by increased prescription volumes, including higher volumes from specialty products, retail national account customers, and GLP-1 medications.
  • Segment Operating Profit was $2.8 billion. Adjusted Segment Operating Profit was $3.3 billion, an increase of 7%, driven by growth in the distribution of specialty products to providers and health systems and increased contributions from our generics program.

Prescription Technology Solutions Segment

Medical-Surgical Solutions Segment

  • Revenues were $11.3 billion, an increase of 2%, driven by growth in the primary and extended care businesses, partially offset by lower contribution from kitting, storage, and distribution of ancillary supplies for the U.S. government’s COVID-19 vaccine program.
  • Segment Operating Profit was $952 million. Adjusted Segment Operating Profit was $1.0 billion, a decrease of 12%, driven by lower contribution from kitting, storage, and distribution of ancillary supplies for the U.S. government’s COVID-19 vaccine program, partially offset by growth in the primary and extended care businesses.

International Segment

  • Revenues were $3.5 billion, an increase of 6%, driven by higher pharmaceutical distribution volumes in the Canadian business.
  • Segment Operating Profit was $70 million. Adjusted Segment Operating Profit was $94 million, an increase of 18%, driven by higher pharmaceutical distribution volumes in the Canadian business.
  • Revenues were $14.1 billion, a decrease of 31%, driven by Fiscal 2023 divestitures within McKesson’s European business.
  • Segment Operating Profit was $319 million. Adjusted Segment Operating Profit was $378 million, a decrease of 24%, driven by Fiscal 2023 divestitures within McKesson’s European business.

Fiscal 2025 Outlook

McKesson does not provide forward-looking guidance on a GAAP basis as the Company is unable to provide a quantitative reconciliation of forward-looking Non- GAAP measures to the most directly comparable forward-looking GAAP measure, without unreasonable effort. McKesson cannot reasonably forecast LIFO inventory-related adjustments, certain litigation loss and gain contingencies, restructuring, impairment and related charges, and other adjustments, which are difficult to predict and estimate. These items are generally uncertain and depend on various factors, many of which are beyond the company’s control, and as such, any associated estimate and its impact on GAAP performance could vary materially.

McKesson continues its focused execution on company priorities, leveraging its assets and capabilities to drive sustainable growth. McKesson anticipates Fiscal 2025 Adjusted Earnings per Diluted Share of $31.25 to $32.05 reflecting continued operating momentum, a strong financial position, and a balanced approach to capital deployment.

TikTok Tells Advertisers: ‘We Are Not Backing Down’

Hundreds of marketers and ad agency types flocked to TikTok’s annual sales presentation after a new law put its future in question.

Hundreds of advertisers, including major brands like L’Oreal and Victoria’s Secret, flocked to the Lower East Side on Thursday night for TikTok’s annual spring pitch to marketers. It had been about a week since President Biden signed a law that says TikTok must be sold from its Chinese parent company or face a potential ban, and marketers were champing at the bit to hear TikTok’s thoughts.

They didn’t have to wait long. Blake Chandlee, TikTok’s president of global business solutions, kicked off the evening by thanking advertisers for their “tremendous support and trust” and said the company considered the law unconstitutional and would challenge it in court.

“We believe the facts and the law are clearly on our side and that we will ultimately prevail,” Mr. Chandlee told more than 300 attendees, some of whom couldn’t find chairs in the crowd. “I want you to know we are not backing down.”

But for the rest of the roughly 45-minute presentation, which took place in a large gallery with the fuchsia and light blue lights of TikTok’s logo, it was business as usual. And it was a keen reminder that Madison Avenue’s concerns about TikTok, which center on how to cleverly market their products and ensure that consumers are seeing their ads, are vastly different from those of Washington, where officials consider the app a national security risk.

Sofia Hernandez, TikTok’s global head of business marketing, declared that TikTok had gone from “being viral to vital” for businesses. The company’s executives introduced new tools for running ads against trends and events like the Summer Olympics in Paris. A Unilever marketing executive described how the Vaseline brand had thrived by tapping into a TikTok skin care trend known as “ slugging .” Many marketers were visibly confused until she explained that the term referred to slathering one’s face with petroleum jelly before bedtime to seal in other serums and moisturizers.

“TikTok is the most interesting story in advertising right now,” said Craig Brommers, chief marketing officer of the retailer American Eagle, who attended the event. “That’s why you had a standing-room-only audience waiting to hear what’s next for the most important video platform for Gen Z.”

Near one of the long bars serving “Violet Hour” cocktails and wine, several stations highlighted creators from TikTok niches like sports and luxury. “From boy moms to girl dads, TikTok is for #parents,” one said. The company sent guests home with branded Dagne Dover bags that retail for around $75.

TikTok’s executives reminded advertisers that with 170 million monthly U.S. users, the user base had started to reflect the general population. “We’re not just Gen Z anymore,” said Tim Natividad, TikTok’s U.S. head of enterprise sales.

Advertising is the lifeblood of platforms like TikTok, which has become a core tool for marketers pitching Americans on new makeup, fast-food hacks , music and more. The company appears determined to maintain ad dollars amid its uncertain future, particularly as U.S. tech giants focus on their market share and push short-form video competitors like Google’s YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels.

TikTok and its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, are private and do not publicly disclose their financials. Brian Wieser, an independent ad industry analyst, recently estimated that TikTok brought in $6 billion in U.S. ad sales last year, but said that excluded revenue from e-commerce, tipping and other ventures. In the United States, TikTok users spend 54 minutes per day on the app, while Instagram users spend 35 minutes on that app, with 21 of those minutes devoted to video, according to the data firm eMarketer.

Under the law signed law week, TikTok must be sold from ByteDance within the next nine months. The Biden administration, lawmakers and security experts have said that under TikTok’s current ownership, there are risks that the Chinese government could lean on ByteDance for access to sensitive data on TikTok users or to spread propaganda.

The company has not yet sued to challenge the law.

Last week, after President Biden signed the bill, Michael Beckerman, TikTok’s head of public policy for the Americas, told employees at an all-hands meeting that the situation was “unprecedented” and “very political,” according to an audio recording that was shared with The New York Times.

“We’re sitting between some of the largest geopolitical issues of our time as well as some very, very complicated issues with technology globally, and privacy and all these policy issues,” Mr. Beckerman said in the April 24 meeting.

Mr. Beckerman said he was buoyed by Mr. Biden’s plan to use TikTok in the lead-up to the election. He also said the vote “was not about us” because it passed as part of a broader package of aid for countries like Ukraine and Israel.

“We’re going to win,” he told employees. “We’re optimistic this is not the end of the process.”
