How to write with honesty in the plain style

It’s a middle ground between an ornate high style and a low style that gravitates toward slang. write in it when you want your audience to comprehend..

I know how to tell you the truth in a sentence so dense and complicated and filled with jargon that you will not be able to comprehend. I also know — using my clearest and most engaging prose — how to tell you a vicious lie.

This dual reality — that seemingly virtuous plainness can be used for ill intent — lies at the heart of the ethics and practice of public writing.

The author who revealed this problem most persuasively was a scholar named Hugh Kenner, and he introduced it most cogently in an essay entitled “The Politics of the Plain Style.” Originally published in The New York Times Book Review in 1985, Kenner included it with 63 other essays in a book called “Mazes.”

When I began reading the essay, I thought it would confirm my longstanding bias that in a democracy, the plain style is most worthy, especially when used by public writers in the public interest.

A good case can be made for the civic virtues of the plain style, but Kenner, in a sophisticated argument, has persuaded me that some fleas, big fleas, come with the dog.

A disappointing truth is that an undecorated, straightforward writing style is a favorite of liars, including liars in high places. Make that liars, propagandists and conspiracy theorists. We have had enough of those in the 21st century to make citing examples unnecessary. And the last thing I would want to do is to republish pernicious texts, even for the purpose of condemning them.

When rank and file citizens receive messages written in the high style — full of abstractions, fancy effects, and abstractions — their BS detector tends to kick in. That nice term, often attributed to Ernest Hemingway, describes a form of skepticism that many of us need to sense when we are being fooled or lied to. So alerted, you can then dismiss me as a blowhard or a pointy-headed intellectual who works at the Poynter Institute!

If I tell it to you straight, you will look me in the eye and pat me on the back, a person of the people, one of you.

Literary styles and standards shift with the centuries, including the lines between fiction and nonfiction. Among the so-called liars cited by Kenner are famous authors such as Daniel Defoe and George Orwell. Both, he argues, wrote fiction that posed as nonfiction. The way they persuaded us that Robinson Crusoe actually lived or that Orwell actually shot an elephant or witnessed a hanging was to write it straight. That is, to make it sound truthful.

If public writers are to embrace a plain style in an honest way, they must understand what makes it work. Kenner argues:

That the plain style is a style, even though it reads as plain, undecorated.
That it is rarely mastered and expressed as literature, except by the likes of Jonathan Swift, H.L. Mencken and Orwell.
That it is a contrivance, an artifice, something made up to create a particular effect.
That it exists in ambiguity, being the perfect form of transmission for democratic practices, but also for fictions, fabrications and hoaxes.
That it makes the writer sound truthful, even when he or she is not.

If you aspire to write in an honest plain style, what are its central components? Let’s give Kenner the floor:

Plain style is a populist style. … Homely diction (common language) is its hallmark, also one-two-three syntax (subject, verb, object), the show of candor and the artifice of seeming to be grounded outside language in what is called fact — the domain where a condemned man can be observed as he silently avoids a puddle and your prose will report the observation and no one will doubt it.

Kenner alludes here to Orwell’s essay in which he observes a hanging and watched the oddity of the condemned man not wanting to get his feet wet as he prepares to climb the steps to the gallows. “Such prose simulates the words anyone who was there and awake might later have spoken spontaneously. On a written page, as we’ve seen, the spontaneous can only be a contrivance.”

The plain style feigns a candid observer. Such is its great advantage for persuading. From behind its mask of calm candor, the writer with political intentions can appeal, in seeming disinterest, to people whose pride is their no-nonsense connoisseurship of fact. And such is the trickiness of language that he may find he must deceive them to enlighten them. Whether Orwell ever witnessed a hanging or not, we’re in no doubt what he means us to think of the custom.

Orwell has been a literary hero of mine from the time I read “Animal Farm” as a child. I jumped from his overt fiction, such as “1984,” to his essays on politics and language, paying only occasional attention to his nonfiction books and narrative essays. I always assumed that Orwell shot an elephant and that he witnessed a hanging, because, well, I wanted to believe it, and assumed a social contract between writer and reader, that if a writer of nonfiction writes a scene where two brothers are arguing in a restaurant, then it was not two sisters laughing in a discotheque.

As to whether Orwell wrote from experience in these cases, I can’t be sure, but he always admitted that he wrote from a political motive, through which he might justify what is sometimes called poetic license.

Writing to reach a “higher truth,” of course, is part of a literary and religious tradition that goes back centuries. When Christian authors of an earlier age wrote the life and death stories of the saints — hagiography — they cared less about the literal truth of the story than a kind of allegorical truth: That the martyrdom of St. Agnes of Rome was an echo of the suffering of Jesus on the cross, and, therefore, a pathway to eternal life.

I write this as a lifelong Catholic without disrespect or irony. Such writing was a form of propaganda and is where we get the word: a propagation of the faith.

Orwell’s faith was in democratic institutions, threatened in the 20th century by tyrannies of the right and the left — fascism and communism. Seeing British imperialism as a corruption, he felt a moral obligation to tell stories in which that system looked bad, including one where, as a member of the imperial police in Burma, he found himself having to kill an elephant, an act he came to regret. Using the plain style, Orwell makes his essay so real that I believe it. In my professional life, I have argued against this idea of the “higher truth,” which does not respect fact, knowing how slippery that fact can be. But Orwell knew whether he shot that elephant or not, so there is no equivocating.

By the onset of the digital age, a writer’s fabrications — even those made with good intent — are often easily exposed, leading to a loss of authority and credibility that can injure a worthy cause. With Holocaust deniers abounding, why would you fabricate a story about the Holocaust when there are still so many factual stories to tell?

There is a powerful lesson here for all public writers: That if I can imagine a powerful plot and compelling characters, I do not have to fabricate a story and sell it as nonfiction. I can write it as a novel and sell it as a screenplay! I have yet to hear an argument that “Sophie’s Choice” is unworthy because it was imagined rather than reported.

I am saying that all forms of writing and communication fall potentially under the rubric of public writing. That includes, fiction, poetry, film, even the music lyrics, labeled as such: “Tell it like it is,” says the song, “Don’t be afraid. Let your conscience be your guide.”

In the end, we need reports we can trust, and even in the age of disinformation and fake news, those are best delivered in the plain style — with honesty as its backbone. Writing in the plain style is a strategy; civic clarity and credibility are the effects.

Here are the lessons:

When you are writing reports, when you want your audience to comprehend, write in the plain style — a kind of middle ground between an ornate high style and a low style that gravitates toward slang
The plain style requires exacting work. Plain does not mean simple. Prefer the straightforward over the technical: shorter words, sentences, paragraphs at the points of greatest complexity.
Keep subjects and verbs in the main clause together. Put the main clause first.
More common words work better.
Easy on the literary effects; use only the most transparent metaphors, nothing that stops the reader and calls attention to itself.
Remember 1-2-3 syntax, subject/verb/object: “Public writers prefer the plain style.”

Honesty and Integrity

At this long awaited and very special time in your lives, Sister Wheelwright and I extend to you our congratulations and our love.

Because we live in the dispensation of the fulness of times, you will have many wonderful and many very challenging experiences. With that future in mind, we have sought to prepare you to be a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ and a leader in your home, your community, your profession, and in building the kingdom of God. Being a disciple and being a leader is all about exercising your agency to act according to the principles of the gospel.

I would like to talk briefly about two of those principles that will help you realize the great promises a loving Father in Heaven has in store for you. These are principles that I hope you have developed and deepened your commitment to during your time here on this very special campus.

The first principle is that of honesty.

The Latin root of the word "honest" is "honestus," which is also the root for the words "honor" and "honorable." Honesty is the quality or condition of being truthful, sincere, candid, and worthy of honor.

Some may regard the principle or quality of honesty to be a very ordinary subject. But in the Lord's kingdom, we believe in being honest! Elder Mark E. Peterson, one of the great Apostles of this dispensation, explained,

"Honesty is a principle of salvation in the kingdom of God. . . . Just as no man or woman can be saved without baptism, so no one can be saved without complete honesty" ("Honesty, a Principle of Salvation," Ensign , Dec. 1971, 73).

And President Hinckley taught: "I believe [honesty] to be the very essence of the gospel. Without honesty, our lives and the fabric of our society will disintegrate into ugliness and chaos" ("We Believe in Being Honest," Ensign , Oct. 1990).

All around us we see the evidence of President Hinckley's prophetic statement regarding the consequences of dishonesty. We see those consequences in the lives of men and women once held up as role models and in the lives of their families. And we see it in our communities and society in general. Elder Bednar has observed that we are surrounded by "an epidemic of dishonesty and ethical failures."

The second principle I would like you to remember and take with you is closely linked to that of being honest. It is the principle of integrity.

The Latin root of the word "integrity" is "integer." Other words that share that same root include "entire" and "integrate." Integrity is the quality or condition of being whole, complete, unbroken, and undivided. Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin has explained:

"Integrity means always doing what is right and good, regardless of the immediate consequences. It means being righteous from the very depth of our soul, not only in our actions but even more importantly, in our thoughts and in our hearts. Personal integrity implies such trustworthiness and incorruptibility that we are incapable of being false to a trust or covenant" ( "Personal Integrity," Ensign , May 1990, 30).

No wonder such qualities as honesty and integrity are fundamental to our salvation and to receiving the blessings of the Lord! From the teachings of Elder Bruce R. McConkie we learn:

"Ethical principles are born of doctrinal concepts. To say 'We believe in being honest' is to testify that because we believe in Christ and his saving truths, we automatically accept honesty as a divine standard to which every true believer must conform. And so it is with all true principles; they inhere in, are part of, and grow out of the saving truths. . . . It is only when [our behaviors] are tied to gospel doctrines that they rest on a sure and enduring foundation and gain full operation in [our lives]" (A New Witness for the Articles of Faith [1985] 699-700).

During your time here on this beautiful campus, we hope that each of you has developed a deep and abiding commitment to the principles of honesty and integrity. Your lives, and the degree to which they are consistent examples of honesty and integrity, will not only determine your happiness and success in all of your endeavors, but will be a great blessing to all of those with whom you come in contact. Indeed they will testify to the world that you are the "genuine gold" that President McKay prophesied would come from this school.

Honesty and integrity are indeed a central part of the "education for eternity" so often referred to by President Kimball on this campus and at other Church universities. Today you become part of a worldwide brotherhood and sisterhood of alumni of this great university. I testify that as you continue to put the Savior and His teachings at the center of your life and all you do, He will bestow great blessings, blessings beyond measure, on you and your posterity.

Please know that we love you and look forward to hearing of your wonderful accomplishments and successes over the coming decades. May this Christmas season and the coming months and years be filled with the blessings of peace and joy promised by a loving Father through the gift of His Only Begotten Son, is our prayer for each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Honesty and Integrity

Today is literally one of the highlights of my life. My soul is filled with joy and thanksgiving. From the time I was a little boy, the opening day of school has always been one of excitement and anticipation. It is for this reason that a high point of my years as president of BYU has been the opportunity for Janet and me to share some thoughts with you at the beginning of each fall semester.

This one, of course—for reasons Brother Hafen has explained—is also laden with an extra element of emotion. It is our seventh September devotional, and we realize that it will be our last. I have appreciated more than words can tell the expressions of support, loyalty, and love that I have received from you, and I want you to know how deeply Janet and I care for each of you and the great hopes that we have for your success and happiness not only during your time here at BYU, but also throughout this life and the next.

It is for this reason that I have pondered and prayed long over what message I want to leave with you on this very special day, my last devotional at the beginning of a new school year. There are so many hopes I have for each of you. I want you to be well educated, in the fullest sense of that word. I want you to be learned in the wisdom of the world. I want your education to help you to be happier and give you a fuller understanding of the awesome significance of what it means that in these last days the Father and the Son have actually come here to this earth and personally chosen a prophet through whom the great prophecies of Daniel and Peter have come to pass and through whom a restitution of all things is possible.

We could discuss so many things as a consequence of these grand truths. I have chosen one topic, and I hope it will be helpful to you. The principle of living that I want to discuss with you today can carry anyone of several possible labels. A very popular one, and a good one, is ethics. Another is honesty. Frankly, the one that I slightly prefer is integrity because for me it includes not only the values implicit in the other two, but also reminds us that what we are striving for is a wholeness and completeness of all that is good. As President Kimball has taught us: “Integrity is one of the cornerstones of character. . . . [It] is a state or quality of being complete, undivided, or unbroken” ( TSWK, p. 192).

Whatever we call it, the quality we are talking about is easier to illustrate than it is to label or to define, and both negative as well as affirmative illustrations are available. At the negative end is the classic statement of Leona Helmsley that “only little people pay taxes” or Ivan Boesky’s equally insightful counsel to UCLA business students in 1986 that “greed is a good thing” or Leo Durocher’s well-known observation that “nice guys finish last.”

There is a Peanuts cartoon in which Charlie Brown first shot the arrow and then drew the bull’s-eye and the rest of the supporting target around his arrow. When Lucy complained that that was not the way it was supposed to be done, Charlie Brown responded, “If you do it my way, you never miss!”

Let me give you an example at the opposite end of the spectrum. It involves a boyhood hero of mine, Ted Williams, one of the greatest baseball players of all time. A. Thomas Young, president and chief operating officer of Martin Marietta Corporation, who observed that “ethics will continue to be the issue of the 90s,” reports Williams’ experience as follows:

More than 30 years ago, Ted Williams was closing out his career with the Boston Red Sox. He was suffering from a pinched nerve in his neck that season.

“The thing was so bad,” he later explained, “that I could hardly turn my head to look at the pitcher. “

For the first time in his career he batted under .300, hitting just .254 with 10 home runs. He was the highest salaried player in sports, making $125,000. The next year, the Red Sox sent him the same contract.

When he got the contract, Williams sent it back with a note saying that he would not sign it until they gave him the full pay cut allowed.

“I was always treated fairly by the Red Sox when it came to contracts,” Williams said. “Now they were offering me a contract I didn’t deserve. And I only wanted what I deserved.”

Williams cut his own salary by 25 percent, raised his batting average by 62 points and closed out a brilliant career by hitting a home run in his final at bat. [A. Thomas Young, “Ethics in Business,” Vital Speeches of the Day, 15 September 1992, pp. 725–26; emphasis in original]

Wallace F. Smith, a Berkeley business school professor, defines ethics as “the inherent inner voice, the source of self-control in the absence of external pressure or compulsion” (“Readers Report,” Business Week, 4 May 1992, p. 11).

This Ted Williams story is, I submit, the classic illustration. This great hero did what he did because he was exercising “self-control in the absence of external pressure or compulsion.” My own favorite definition comes from Potter Stewart, an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court. He defines ethics as “knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is the right thing to do.”

Justice Stewart is also one of my heroes and was one of history’s finest justices and lawyers. I hope that throughout your lives you will remember and ponder his advice about the distinction between what you have a right to do and what is the right thing to do. You have a legal right, for example, to gossip, lie (unless you do it under oath), cut corners across BYU grass, burn flags, read pornography, be disrespectful to your parents, criticize and attack your Church leaders, apostatize from the Church, pay less than a full tithing, smoke cigarettes, be insensitive to your family members’ needs, sit by silently doing nothing while your neighbor drowns—all the while writing a poem called “Ode to a Drowning Man”—or wear a red sweater in Cougar stadium the afternoon of November 18, when the Cougars play the University of Utah. But the fact that you have a right to do these things does not make any of them the right thing to do, and ethics, as defined by Justice Stewart, consists of knowing the difference between the two.

One of the most important observations to make about ethics or integrity or whatever we call it is the danger of over-compartmentalization, that is, treating ethical issues as something separate and apart from other aspects of what we do. A law student reported, for example, that when she raised a question in one of her first-year classes whether a certain practice might be ethical, the professor responded, “You will take your ethics course next year.” When I read this law professor’s response, it reminded me of Elder Neal A. Maxwell’s insightful observation that:

Developing congruency and avoiding the compartmentalization of one’s life is, of course, necessary for the wholeness and integrity we all crave, but which is so elusive at times. So many of us have a “public self” and a “private self.” Jesus made it crystal clear that outer appearances and inner feelings must, ultimately, coincide. If the teachings of the gospel about honesty make for an honest tithe but wash against an attitudinal wall in terms of business practices, honesty is being applied differentially. We are saying that “honesty is the best policy—part of the time!” [ “A More Excellent Way” (Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Company, 1973), pp. 126–127]

One of the best tests of whether we are or are not compartmentalizing our lives, I submit, is whether we would be willing to give our pet parrot to the town gossip.

I also like Elder Bruce R. McConkie’s explanation that these principles of ethics, which are so universally accepted, and properly so, are grounded in more than common sense and respect for others. In his words:

In teaching the gospel, it is far less effective to say “Be honest, for honesty is the best policy,” and then to reason from a social standpoint why this is so, than to link honesty with the gospel out of which it grows by teaching: “Wo unto the liar, for he shall be thrust down to hell.” (2 Nephi 9:34.) It is only when gospel ethics are tied to gospel doctrines that they rest on a sure and enduring foundation and gain full operation in the lives of the saints. [ A New Witness for the Articles of Faith (Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Company, 1985), p. 700]

I believe that one of the most important indicators of how honest we are is the seriousness with which we keep agreements that we have made. One of the most sobering problems facing our society today, in my opinion, is the failure of so many people simply to do what they have agreed to do. It is becoming quite commonplace, for example, not only for professional athletes but also for others to insist on “renegotiating” their contracts because they conclude that they are now in a position to make a better deal than the one to which they earlier committed themselves.

A bit more subtle perhaps, but certainly just as important, are our obligations to organizations and institutions to which we belong, and with whom we have made certain commitments, either expressly or by virtue of our membership or affiliation.

One of the institutions—and the people who compose it—to whom we have an integrity obligation is the nation of which we are citizens. In the case of most of us, that country is the United States of America. For me, the most consistently dismaying lack of individual integrity in this respect is the failure of rather large numbers of American citizens to pay their income taxes. Equally dismaying are the reasons given by some of these people. The two most common are that the income tax is either unconstitutional or (in the case of some LDS Church members) inconsistent with gospel principles. Each of these positions is absurd. Concerning constitutionality, the income tax is explicitly authorized by the Constitution itself. The Sixteenth Amendment states, in words that could not be more plain: “The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes.” I have spent a good part of my life arguing and litigating over what is and is not constitutional. But I have never understood how any rational human being can take the position that a part of the Constitution itself is unconstitutional. And the notion that the anti-income tax position is rooted in gospel principles is equally insupportable in light of President Harold B. Lee’s statement describing as “vicious and wicked” the practice of those “who are taking the law into their own hands by refusing to pay their income tax because they have some political disagreement with constituted authorities” (“Admonitions for the Priesthood of God,” Ensign, January 1973, pp. 105, 106).

Another opportunity to demonstrate our institutional integrity is provided by our membership in the BYU community, whose Honor Code is one of our distinguishing features. Some people are fond of pointing out, and very correctly so, that some aspects of our Honor Code are founded on principles of fundamental morality and integrity that would apply to any member of the Church and any ethical person regardless of affiliation or nonaffiliation with BYU—or for that matter with the Church. Examples are those principles dealing with observing the criminal laws of the land, academic honesty, and sexual morality. But it does not follow that we have a two-tiered Honor Code, the first tier consisting of those values that are to be taken seriously, and whose violation should be a matter for some kind of official university response, whereas those in the second tier, most notably our Dress and Grooming Standards, fall into a category of admonitions that we might call good ideas if you’re into that kind of thing, but since they’re not required for a temple recommend, don’t sweat it.

What this two-tiered approach ignores, of course, is that there is another overarching principle at work, not applicable to members of the Church in general. It has to do with keeping the deals we have made, precisely the kind of thing that we have been talking about this morning. Members of the Church at large have not signed a formal commitment in the presence of their bishop to keep all aspects of the Honor Code, with solemn assurances that the applicants are serious about the commitments they have made and will honor them.

The fact that you and I have made such a commitment should be the end of the matter. Having made such a formal promise, we are bound by it just as Karl G. Maeser was bound by the hypothetical lines of his famous circle. That’s what we mean by honor, and that’s what we mean by integrity. A different standard does apply to those of us at BYU, a standard that has been determined very consciously by our board of trustees, and which each of us has solemnly agreed to follow. I hope that no one on this campus will ever adopt a two-tiered approach to the Honor Code, observing those provisions that in the individual’s view are important and disregarding the others. They are all important precisely because we have agreed to honor them.

In conclusion, let me tell you about one of our alumni who met the full measure of honesty. He is a retired gentleman, living on a modest pension, who sat in my office a few years ago and told me that in the 1930s he had attended BYU for one quarter. Due to some administrative error, he had never been billed for the $32 that at that time, according to his recollection, was the amount BYU charged for a quarter’s tuition. He told me, “For over 50 years that unpaid tuition has weighed heavily on my mind, and I want to make it right. You tell me what I owe, and I will pay.” I told him that he owed us absolutely nothing. The statute of limitations on that claim had run a half century ago. He patiently pointed out that he was not talking about a legal obligation but a moral one.

When I could see that nothing less than satisfaction of my estimate of the present value of that original $32 obligation would calm his soul, I told him that I thought a reasonable present value for the unpaid tuition of years ago would be about $500. He thought about my answer for a minute and then said, “Could I have a little time to pay it off?” We worked out a payment schedule, and that obligation has now been completely satisfied.

I refer back to Elder McConkie’s observation that for a believing, practicing Latter-day Saint, we are honest and ethical not only because it is the best policy but also because it is solidly tied to the principles of restored truth. Everything we do should be guided by restored truth, by our conviction that once again prophets walk upon the earth, and we have the benefit, both through modern scripture and through their teachings, of the will of our Heavenly Father. It’s not just another Church. Joseph Smith really did see the Father and the Son, the priesthood is once again on the earth, and the Book of Mormon is exactly what it purports to be, a new witness for Christ received by revelation and translated under the direct inspiration of our Heavenly Father. We must first secure our knowledge of these truths, and they will then become the foundation for everything else we do. That honesty and integrity in all things and with respect to all persons and institutions may be one of the results of that conviction is my prayer in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Honesty: The Winning Formula for Effective Public Speaking

Recently, one of my speech coaching clients reported a breakthough she experienced as a speaker. She had recently traveled as part of a delegation to meet with a high-profile political leader abroad. In fact, she'd been chosen to represent the group in a 1:1 discussion with the leader while the rest of the group and an audience looked on.

Understandably, she was nervous, believing that she didn't possess the polish and professionalism to do the interview justice. (To speak with influence and impact in your own appearances, download my free cheat sheet on "The 4 Characteristics of an Influential Speaker." )

But she was very pleasantly surprised. She not only acquitted herself well—but others in her professional community have been raving about her appearance since. It didn't start out that way, however. She was anxious and self-doubting and of two minds about her appearance. Those are reactions many of us have when we speak. But let's look at why she excelled in her presentation, and why the same can be true of your next appearance as a speaker or presenter.

If You Have Something to Say, You'll Be Listened to and Remembered

The first obstacle my client faced, of course, was her own self-doubt. The second appeared in the person of the political leader's scheduler. This turned out to be a hyper-active woman who laid down the law in no uncertain terms concerning the rules of the two-person panel discussion between my client and the premier.

"You'll have exactly 10 minutes," she warned. "And when you see me make this gesture [very much like the familiar hand-across-the-throat], that means you'll have to end." Naturally in the face of this onslaught, my client lost her self-possession completely. In fact, she experienced a near panic attack, and began furiously crossing out major portions of the remarks she'd prepared. Just before being ushered into the leader's presence, however, a calm came over her. She put away her pencil—but not before making use of that pencil's eraser. She decided to stick with her prepared remarks (after all, she'd prepared them carefully). And that's what she did.

Her first thought upon meeting the august personage, was that he looked exactly like his photos. After that reaction, she forgot that she was supposed to be awed and began enjoying their conversation. Forty-five minutes later, the discussion concluded to great applause. And when my client looked around for the scheduler, she was nowhere to be found.

Conversations and Public Speaking both Require Honesty

As she finished reporting her triumph to me, my client said something that I think is profound:

"You don't have to be the best speaker. You just have to deliver your message and be yourself."

Has anything simpler or more accurate ever been said about effective public speaking? We think of speeches, presentations, keynotes, prepared remarks, pitches, client updates, reports at meetings and other forms of public speaking as though they had quotation remarks around them. We think this way even though, as Erving Goffman reminded us in his book The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, we're giving performances of all kinds day in and day out as the situation requires.

To rise to the false standard of a Speech (with a capital "S") or Presentation (with a capital "P"), we try to be good or even excellent. But here's a test: The next time you speak to a friend or a colleague, take note of whether you're trying to be anything at all. The chances are much better that you're just doing your best to communicate an idea.

In other words, you're being honest with yourself and your audience.

That's what my successful client was doing, once she let go of the false desire to be "good enough" to speak to that politician. He was as human as she is, and what interested him as well as her was a good conversation.

So the next time you give a speech or presentation (with a small "s" and "p"), treat it as a conversation and just talk—to the one person you're sitting across from or the 200 people in the audience. You'll not only come across at your best. You'll be giving them exactly what they came for: someone speaking to them honestly and plainly. And in the world of public speaking, that's what true charisma is all about.

Imagine you find a wallet full of money on the street. No one sees you pick it up. You could keep it, but you choose to find the owner and return it. That’s integrity. You did the right thing, not because you had to, but because it was the right thing to do.

Integrity is also about being true to yourself. It’s about saying what you mean, and meaning what you say. If you promise your friend you’ll help them with their homework, you do it. That’s integrity.

But why is integrity important? It’s because it builds trust. People believe in those who have integrity. They know they can rely on them. And when people trust each other, great things can happen.

That’s why integrity is so important.

But integrity is not just about actions, it’s also about words. Have you ever heard the saying, “Honesty is the best policy”? It means that telling the truth, even when it’s hard, is the best choice. If you tell a lie, you might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later, the truth will come out. And when it does, people might not trust you anymore. So, always tell the truth, no matter what.

Integrity also helps us to grow as people. When we make a mistake, we can choose to hide it or we can choose to admit it and learn from it. Owning up to our mistakes shows integrity. It means we’re brave enough to say, “I was wrong, and I’m sorry.” It’s not always easy, but it’s the right thing to do. And when we do the right thing, we become stronger, just like that tree standing tall in the wind.

In conclusion, integrity is about doing what’s right, even when it’s hard. It’s about being honest, keeping our promises, and learning from our mistakes. It’s like a guiding star, leading us to make good choices in life. What Would the Economy Look Like Under a Second Biden Term?

President Biden is campaigning on four more years of yummy stew. A lot of voters are saying, “I like you, but I don’t like your stew.”

The performance of the U.S. economy should be a winning issue for Biden. I don’t know what the next half year holds in store, but as of now, unemployment is low and inflation, while still elevated, is way down from its 2021 peak. Economic growth is so strong that the Federal Reserve is putting off plans to lower interest rates.

Biden can’t credibly promise to turn things around — to make things much better in the coming term — because they’re already good by standard measures.

It’s just that many voters don’t see it that way. As I blogged on Monday, only 20 percent of likely voters in a survey by The New York Times and Siena College strongly approve of Biden’s handling of the economy as president, while 45 percent strongly approve of Donald Trump’s handling of the economy when he was president. Half rate current economic conditions as “poor.”

I asked people in the Biden White House and in Biden’s campaign as well as outside experts what Americans can expect on economic policy if he wins a second term. The short answer: more of the same. That’s encapsulated in the campaign’s slogan , “Finish the job.”

The biggest difference is that there most likely won’t be a pandemic to fight. The second-biggest difference is that the building blocks of Biden’s pro-worker industrial policy agenda are already in place. The emphasis in a second term would be on the executive branch carrying out that agenda while attempting to get federal budget deficits back under control.

In a campaign speech on Tuesday in his hometown, Scranton, Pa., Biden acknowledged that the economy isn’t working for everybody, but he turned it into a jab at Trump by saying someone complained to him he was drowning in debt. “I said, ‘I’m sorry, Donald, but I can’t help you,’” Biden joked.

There’s a lot we don’t know about how the economy might perform in a second Biden term. There could be a recession, which would cause more red ink (more government spending and lower tax revenue). Congress could reject his initiatives. Trading partners could push back against his economic nationalism.

Biden’s plan continues to adopt the priorities of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, with some exceptions. He’s fully adopted the left’s argument that corporate greed is a major factor in high inflation. So if re-elected he’ll continue to try to rein in corporate power through antitrust lawsuits and other measures.

He’ll seek to increase taxes on the rich and spending on the poor, including by restoring the pandemic-era expansion of the child tax credit. He’ll continue trying to forge a coalition between the labor and environmental movements by pushing for well-paying, unionized jobs in manufacturing and installation of green technologies.

One of the few objectives that he shares, approximately, with Trump is to reduce America’s dependence on imports from China. His industrial policy — embracing infrastructure, chips and clean tech — is politically centrist, says Brian Deese, an innovation fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who directed the National Economic Council during Biden’s first two years in office.

On taxes, he is sticking to his promise not to raise them for people earning under $400,000 a year. That’s a political winner, but declaring such a big swath of the national income off limits makes it hard to reduce the big federal budget deficits. One way he does want to shrink deficits is by raising the corporate income tax rate to 28 percent. That would be well above the 21 percent set by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which was Trump’s signature achievement, but still below the 35 percent rate that prevailed before 2017. He also wants to restore the top marginal tax rate on people to 39.6 percent (up from 37 percent currently) and apply it to individuals earning $400,000 or more a year.

Tax rates go up and down, of course. More unusual is Biden’s plan to try to tax unrealized capital gains. That’s the money you’ve made on paper when an asset you own goes up in value but you haven’t sold it yet. Biden wants to put a minimum 25 percent tax on income plus unrealized capital gains for households worth $100 million or more. Biden calls that his billionaire minimum income tax.

In his State of the Union address in March, Biden repeated his claim that the average federal tax rate for billionaires is 8.2 percent, which he said is “far less than the vast majority of Americans pay.” He cited that figure again in Scranton on Tuesday (although he made it “8.3”).

That’s an apples-to-oranges comparison, though. The rate for billionaires is as low as 8.2 percent only if you include unrealized capital gains in their income. Going by income as conventionally measured, the top 400 families by income paid a 23 percent rate in 2014, the last year for which the Internal Revenue Service released data .

On trade, Biden is far less extreme than Trump, who expressed interest last year in a 10 percent tariff on almost all imports and, according to The Washington Post, has talked with aides about the possibility of a special 60 percent tariff on imports from China.

But Biden is also going after China pretty hard. On Wednesday, the White House announced that Biden would ask his trade representative to more than triple tariffs on some steel and aluminum products from China. Biden has also toughened “Buy American” government procurement policies and is using subsidies to bolster the domestic clean energy sector.

When economists try to predict how the economy would fare in a second Biden term, they assume no drastic change in policies. In other words, it’s the base-line forecast, which is for a gradual decline in inflation and modest but steady economic growth. Pretty good, actually, especially in comparison with predictions for another Trump term, which I plan to write about on Friday.

Like a lot of people, I’m still trying to figure out why voters are so down on Biden’s economic record. I watched the telecast of his speech in Scranton on Tuesday for clues. I think a lot of voters think Biden looks old and doddering, so they conclude that he can’t possibly be a good economic manager. That would be consistent with a Gallup poll conducted in March that found that Biden swamps Trump on likability, honesty and trustworthiness, but trails him on strength, decisiveness and the ability to manage the government effectively.

That’s a high hurdle for the Biden campaign to overcome because it’s scarcely affected by actual data on economic performance.

Elsewhere: The Mental Health of Young Adults Has Deteriorated

Ill-being is the opposite of well-being. It used to be hump-shaped: low among carefree young adults and the contented elderly, highest in unhappy middle age. But the hump has disappeared, for unfortunate reasons, according to new research. Ill-being is now highest among young adults and then steadily declines, according to a working paper by David Blanchflower of Dartmouth College and the University of Glasgow, Alex Bryson of University College London and Xiaowei Xu of the Institute for Fiscal Studies in London.

Rates of depression, despair, economic inactivity and suicide have risen sharply among young adults. The authors point to “a growing body of evidence suggesting that the rise in ill-being of the young is associated with the rise in the use of the internet and smartphones.” One study they cite found that the proportion of young women spending at least five hours a day on internet screens rose to 43 percent in 2021 from 10 percent in 2011.
