Transcript: What is Measles? Measles is a highly infectious disease caused by the measles virus (MeV) Measles a common infection in children Measles virus is a genus Morbillivirus and is closely related to rinderpest virus, which is an infection amongst cattle It’s characterized by a red, blotchy rash that begins on the face The rash is than spread throughout the body within days Measles is very rare in North America. Due to widespread immunizations the number of measles cases has declined in the last 50 years. Before measles vaccination became available in the 1960s, more than 500,000 cases of measles were reported every year. From 2000 to 2007, just an average of 63 cases per year was reported. Measles is spread through direct contact with or inhalation of the secretions of an infected person’s nose or mouth. Signs and Symptoms Signs and symptoms of measles begin 7 to 10 days after infection has first entered the body The first symptom is a high fever along with runny rose, and irritability, drowsiness and red eyes 3 to 7 days after the start of the symptoms, small white spots known as “Kopliks spots”Signs and symptomsorehead first and then covers the rest of the body The measles rash is generally red or brown in colour and has a splotchy appearance Complications can include a high grade fever, nasal congestion, watery red eyes, “kopliks spot”, swelling of the neck glands, and ear infections Rash "Koplik spots" FEVER Prevention The measles vaccine is part of the measles-mumps-rubella immunization (MMR) or measles-mumps-rubella-varicella immunization (MMRV) given at 12 to 15 months of age and again at 4 to 6 years of age. The most important thing you can do to protect your child from measles is to have them vaccinated according to the schedule prescribed by your doctor. Complications Kids with measles should be closely watched. In some cases, measles can lead to other complications, such as otitis media(middle ear infection), croup, diarrhea, pneumonia, and encephalitis (a serious brain infection), which may require antibiotics or hospitalization. Recent Outbreaks In 2008 the United States saw an increase in measles cases and outbreaks (three or more linked cases), with 131 cases reported between January and July. More than 90% of those infected were not immunized or their immunization status was unknown. What can a PSW do to help?
