It is fashionable to talk about yawning generation gap in the modern world. But what does ‘generation gap’ mean anyway? It means the gap between one generation and the next, between the old generation and the younger.

This gap has always been there through all the previous centuries and the gap, as such is neither unexpected nor desirable. What surprises us today is the width of the gap: it is far wider than it has ever been and far more difficult to bridge.

Generation gap brings about a change (or a development) in the thoughts and actions of the people of the later generation from the previous generation. It also brings about a change in ways and means of living, in dressing and even in speech.

A gap denotes distance and indeed, the older generation in today’s world stands far apart from the younger one in many respects and vice versa. The older men dress differently, eat traditional food, believe in an accepted code of conduct, and cherish values which have no meaning for the younger people. In fact, many activities of the younger men amaze their parents and parent-surrogates, even shock them.

A denim and jean-clad boy romps about with a girl-friend in tow. He drinks campa-cola and dances exotic dances. He sings pop-songs of the western variety and does not care for his rich national heritage. The boy we are talking about is an Indian boy and his girl-friend has the same way of living. They are very well- informed but they do not seem to go deep into things.

They live smartly, even dangerously. And to have a taste of dangerous living by proxy, they read Hadley Chase’s adventure stories with extraordinary zeal. The older people can hardly appreciate all that they do. The sentiments and altitudes of these two classes of men are mutually unintelligible. As a result, they misunderstand one another, and more often than not get wounded by one another’s gestures.

With the advent of technology the distance between generations have increased more and more. Compare an old Rolls Royce to a modern day jaguar. The differences are not shocking.

Compare an olden day cooking oven to a modern day multi- utility cooking kitchen top. Compare a bell-bots to a modern day cargo. Differences far and wide.

But thinking of differences we can proudly state that if generation gap hadn’t been there, we wouldn’t have been what we are now. Why?

Think about computers. Now think about a world without computers? Impossible right? Computers are the greatest gifts that modern world had offered us. Whatever the old uncles may say about the nostalgia of watching cricket on an old black and white television set. There is no comparison when it comes to watching movies with the high -end graphics and digital surround sound.

The eyebrows of even the oldest of the old people go up when they see the advancement the little generation gap has made.

But with generation gap comes another factor and that is freedom. With generation gap comes more versatility and thoughts and gestures. People are becoming more broad minded and frank. This creates a matter of great objection to the people who believe that newer generation are actually disrespecting traditions and rituals by becoming more flexible in the customs and thoughts.

Compared to boys, society has more problems with girls when it comes to freedom. If a girl dresses independently of her choice then she becomes a topic of great interest and introspection.

There have been certain rules set in the society for dress code. In a family gathering you always have to wear a traditional cloth: on sea beaches girls shouldn’t get wet, if they do it is considered uncultured. Often the basis of these norms is questionable.

Why do we have to wear formals in a gathering? Why not an outfit in which i am most comfortable in? For this reason certain fashion designers have come up with an innovation called “fusion wear”. It is a mix of both traditional as well as casual wear. Nevertheless this form of dressing had also faced a lot of criticism.

With generation gap came another factor which still is a topic of hot discussion and that is the choice of music. Older generations still believe that newer generation listens to what is called ‘noise’ and not music. Yes, there are evergreen gems whose place is cannot be taken by anybody. Nobody can forget the charm of music made by the ‘ battles’ or ‘elvis pristley’ or ‘john Lennon’

But who said that the music made by today’s generations is bad? The famous songs of ‘shakira’, ‘Jennifer Lopez’ and ‘Michael Jackson’ are still rocking the charts far and wide. Their melodies are heard all over the world. Would it have been possible is their music was ‘noise’?

The fact is that we take time to get used to change. Whatever is new in the market we discard it thinking that it might be bad since it is new. We don’t want to experiment. This is why the generation gap has increased to such an extent that it is difficult to bridge.

Generation gap is a difference in values and attitudes between one generation and another, especially between young people and their parents. These differences stem from older and younger people not understanding each other because of their differences in experiences, opinions, habits, and behavior.

History has always seen some degree of generational differences. For instance, women in the 1920s shocked their elders by wearing short skirts and bobbed hair. Generation Gap: Childhood, Adulthood, Old Age Essay

The relations between the generations were always complicated. The older people always indicate that it their time the situation was different and people behaved in the different way. At the same period, the younger generation says about the impact of the modern tendencies, changes of the way of life that give an opportunity to claim that the younger generation is more advanced.

However, as it clearly seen though the history, such attitude of the generations to each other was always the same. Therefore, although the technical facilities, cultural and economical changes impact the society, it is possible to claim that there are no significant changes in the relations between the generations, they are neither improving, nor getting worse.

Analyzing the cultural aspect within the conflict between generations, it is necessary to admit that such cultural issues as art, music, fashion have a tendency of the permanent change. Thereby, it is obvious that the different generations which do not have the same tastes and fashion, cannot understand each other’s needs. And especially this aspect is sharp within the relations between teenagers and their parents.

Today, the tradition hierarchy of family is different than two centuries ago. Elder members of family feel themselves as the intruders. From the other side, their children can easily send parents to the social houses. During the past century, the patterns of solidarity in friend and family relations had been changed (Allan 2008).

The transformation of the family and friendship aspects influences the Western communities since 1970s. People got more freedom and, as the result, the gap in the relations between young people and their parents increased (Thompson 1998).

From the other hand, the flexibility in the constructing of personal life and relations within the social groups is also increased. As the diversity in the priorization provided more facilities and made the personal choice more complex, the cultural changes of the past century can be considered as positive.

The relations between adult and old people can be also considered from the mentioned below position (Edmunds & Turner 2002, Huntley 2006). Thus, in the article Building Positive Relationships (2008) is written about the relations between 57-years old woman and her 89-years old mother.

As it understandable from the article, the conflict between the generations still exists, however, due to the physical disability of old mother, both woman try to find a solution and to rebuild their relations.

Being in the difficult situation, old people need more attention. For adult people, “the decline of a parent’s health, death of one parent or financial pressures often mean an aging parent will need increased social and emotional support or services from family – such as help with meals, cleaning, transportation or financial matters” ( Building Positive Relationships 2010).

In this context, it is necessary to admit the position of Klinenberg (2001) who indicates the tendency of increase of a number of old people who are estranged from their previous social circle and who live alone without a strong connection with their children.

Many old people have to live in the social establishments due to unwillingness of their younger relatives to care about them. This tendency demonstrates that the traditional cultural attitude to family, marriage and old parent is changed.

Obviously, the economic conditions influence generations. Wyn (2006) explores the rupture of the educational and employment outcomes as the peculiarity of the current situation of the young generation.

As it was normal order of things, today, such disbalance is widely spread that makes young people face with a number of problems while searching a job as “the transition processes for the majority of young people born after 1970 are different from those of the majority of their parents’ generation” (Wyn 2006, p. 6).

From this point of view, it is possible to notice that the younger generation has a significant reason to claim that the current situation on the labor market is more difficult than it was years ago.

According to the statistics provided by Wyn, “by the year 2000, at the age of 27, 68 per cent of the respondents had achieved permanent jobs, and 76 per cent were in full-time jobs” (Wyn 2006, p. 10). However, from the other hand, the elder generation has much more problems within this aspect. Although old people are more experienced, many employers prefer to accept a young person than the elder one.

Analyzing Mannheim’s essay The Problem of Generation , Pilcher (1994) indicates that “the notion of generation being widespread in everyday language as a way of understanding differences between age groups and as a means of locating individuals and groups within historical times” ( Mannheim’s sociology of generations: an undervalued legacy , p. 481).

Thereby, it is possible to say that the present problem existed during the history and never turned into the tendency of improvement or worsening. Different social models, tendencies, fashion and other issues dictate the rules of the relations between generations. Although a number of researchers indicate the increasing way of generation gap, history demonstrates that such tendencies were presented at all times.

Today, teenagers and young people feel themselves free and independent as the world is controlled by them. The number of old people is growing day by day as the result of the demographic characteristics. The present century requires more fast reaction, creative ideas and flexibility which are typical for younger generation. Wyn claims that today the process for becoming adult is different and emerging.

The typical issues of those changes are “an increasingly flexible labor market, dissolution of occupational boundaries, deregulation of labour, and increases in contrast, part-time employment” (2006, p. 12). At the same period, the cultural aspect also changes. Thus, the attitude of the young people to marriage and family is different while the level of fertility reduces.

Privatization of educational services diminishes the capability of young people to get better education. Changed attitude to the elder relatives led to a big number of the old people abandoned in the social houses. Generation gap is the key moment within the understanding of the relations between generations.

There is possible to say about the sharp conflict which is concerned with different parts of life and particularly with economic and cultural aspects. Young adults and elder people have the different possibilities to find a job, to increase their financial status according to the current tendencies in the society and they have different cultural tastes and traditional values.

However, although the cultural and economical changes impact the society and the generation gap is significant, it is necessary to claim that the relations between the generations are neither improving, nor getting worse. The historical knowledge provides the demonstration that such situation was always actual and topical.

A college student in Thailand sent me some good questions about how to manage the generation gap between parents and teenagers.

What follows are the questions asked and my responses, not based on psychological research, but only expressive of my personal opinions as a practitioner.

Some people say the generation gap is a myth. What is your opinion on that?

The “generation gap” between parents and adolescents is real to the degree that each grows up in a different historical time and culture—imprinted by the tastes and values and icons and events that define that formative period in their lives when the impressionable adolescent begins the process of growing up.

What is the cause of it? Do we blame the parents, the children, or something else?

The generation gap is not to be “blamed” on anyone. It is a function of normal social change. Change is that process that constantly upsets and resets the terms of everyone’s existence all their lives.

Cultural differences between generations are emphasized when parents identify with the old, similar, familiar, traditional, and known, while their adolescent (at a later time) becomes fascinated and influenced by the new, different, unfamiliar, experimental, and unknown.

In most cases, the parents are culturally anchored in an earlier time and the adolescent in a later time. To some degree, social change culturally differentiates the generations. That is just how life is.

Obviously, in socially simpler, stable, low-change cultures where the young identify with parental roles they expect to imitate and occupy when grown-up, there is very little generation gap. Compare this to growing up in a very complex, rapidly changing culture where the old world of the parent stands in marked contrast to that of their adolescent.

For example: The parents grew up before the Internet revolution in one world of experience only—offline. However, their adolescent is growing up in two worlds—offline and online. Thus a profound generation gap can be created, even though parents have acquired online skills in their adulthood.

How does the generation gap affect the relationship between parents and children?

To the degree that parents can bridge the generational difference by showing an interest in the new, this can reduce the gap's potentially estranging influence.

For example, they can encourage a very powerful and esteem-endowing power reversal in their relationship if they treat the adolescent as an “expert” and themselves as "unknowing," with their adolescent as teacher and themselves as students.

For example, the parent might ask: “Can you help me learn to appreciate the music you love—it is so different from what I grew up with and became used to listening to?”

Or, the parent might ask: “Can you show me a little how to play the video game you and your friends so enjoy, because I would like to learn?”

Parents who can’t bridge cultural, generational differences with interest, but ignore or criticize them instead, are at risk of allowing these differences to estrange the relationship.

What should a teenager do when they feel that parents don't understand them?

Once children start separating from childhood , around ages 9 to 13, and start redefining themselves on the way to young adulthood, two avenues for growth are pursued. One is detaching from childhood and family for more freedom of action and independence; the other is differentiating from childhood and parents for more freedom of personal expression and individuality.

In one sense, having parents “not understand” the young person as well as they did in his or her childhood confirms that this adolescent transformation is underway. This is both affirming and lonely , so the adolescent is often ambivalent—wanting and not wanting to be understood by parents.

When young people feel that their parents don’t understand and would like them to, they can take the initiative. Being brave, they can say to parents: “There is something about my growing up that I believe you do not understand, and I would like you to appreciate. Could you listen while I try to explain, and then we can talk because this is important to me.”

When there's conflict, how can we make a compromise acceptable to both sides?

Where intergenerational conflicts arise over what is enjoyable to youth and offensive to adults, like cutting -edge media entertainment, treat conflict not as a power struggle over who will prevail, but as an opportunity to use discussion over a difference to increase communication and understanding in the relationship.

For adults, no authority is sacrificed by listening. Instead, valuable understanding can be gained when parents treat the adolescent not as a stubborn opponent to defeat, but as a valued informant who can help them know their teenager and her or his world more fully. Sometimes giving a hearing and fully listening is enough to ease parental concerns, and sometimes being given a hearing is enough for the adolescent to honor the parents' wishes.

Parents can explain: “We will be firm where we have to be, flexible and willing to compromise where we can, and in either case always want to give a complete hearing to whatever you have to say.”

Is there a way to minimize the effect of the generation gap?

I believe the best way to minimize the potentially estranging effects of the generation gap is for parents to treat their adolescent as a guide who can help them understand a time of growing up that can be quite culturally different from their own youth. When rearing adolescents, parental interest and willingness to listen count for a lot, while those parents who are more fully informed are often less fearful than parents who forbid discussion of what they don’t understand.

In addition, it can help parents and teenagers stay close when they share companionship doing what they still enjoy in common—whether participating in some traditional interests that still hold, eating out together, helping each other, going to movies, or just joking around about what both find funny.

This is the challenge of relating across the generation gap for them both: remaining communicatively connected as adolescence drives them apart—as it is meant to do.

Generation gap - reasons, effects and solution

The problem of generation gap exists everywhere across the globe. The problem exists even in the developed countries but it is not experienced very intensely. There are many ways to solve the problems but if unsolved can lead to many other problems.

Problem of generation gap The problem of generation gap is universal and everybody across the globe faces the unchangeable problem. But this problem is experienced intensely in countries like India or Gulf countries where the families live united. Although the families continue to live unite they may be in odd terms with each other. The unity that exists in a family system is a positive indication but it should not lead to negative consequences. The problem is experienced due to several reasons which should be properly analyzed. Generation of our parents Most of our parents were born during the phase of independence and post-independence. The period after independence was critical in India and many people faced economic crisis during this period. Our parents have personally viewed and experienced the pain of starvation and the hardships involved to earn daily bread. They have compromised most of their desires and strived to bring up their families that suffered from economic crises. They were mere listeners to their parents because they consumed a bread for a day only when their parents labored for long hours. After comprising for a long period they killed most of their burning desires and led an austere life. They began to develop interest towards religious activities and spirituality after they began longing for a settled and an economically stable life. Constant struggle in life led them towards interest in spiritual activities. people of our generation When we were born rapid changes in economy took place in our nation. When we were growing up, the radical policies of economic liberalization led to a lot of progress in the nation. The Indian markets began expanding and the riches of India were then discovered. We witnessed a lot of economical and cultural changes around us but they still remained only dreams. The rapid change in the economy but moreover affected the richer segment of the society. We also viewed the rich people in our nation often visiting the places of luxury such as clubs, pubs, restaurants and commuting through splendid bikes. But neither the people of our generation comprised much in terms of economy and education because our nation was rapidly progressing then. We moderately comprised towards our desires perhaps because our desires did not suit the traditions and culture of our religion. Kids of this generation The kids of the present generation are born when the technology is operated through the foot. Today our nation has made tremendous progress in the field of technology and science compared to the yesteryears. Due to the emergence of IT industries in India and the concept of outsourcing most of the parents earn high income and are able to spend lavishly for the kids. The children are customized to a comfortable life since their childhood and are unable to view the hardships of life. They do not understand the pain their grandparents underwent to earn a degree and daily bread. They know how to operate a laptop and a system by using key commands and innovative software but do not know the dedication involved in the developed of such necessary gadgets. Reasons for generation gap There are several problems that lead to this conflicting problem. The people of all the three mentioned generations have been brought up in an entire different way. Due to the difference in bringing up, their mental framework differ from each other. Physciological and behavorial patterns are formed on the basis of circumstances one undergoes. When the people of the different generations meet each other they often are induced to difference in opinion, communication gap, conflicts etc. Due to the difference in mental framework the likes and dislikes also differ from each other. In this way both the parties cannot live in peace with each other and they are unable to respect the likes and opinion of each other. The frequency of thoughts flow from opposite directions in a parallel manner. When the thought process from the two parties is so different, then love cannot be expressed even if it exists between the two parties. Both of them are unable to find a proper channel to express their feelings also. in this way gap creates between the two relationships. Effects of generation gap The problem of generation gap creates negative consequences and the two parties already began to drift with each other emotionally. Generation gap occurs between parents and children or between in-laws. It also occurs between teachers and students but the degree of gap is less because they do not spend much time with each other. This problem leads to communication gap and the two parties are unable to understand the channel for communication. Due to emotional incompatibility arguments over silly matters and conflicts began to occur often frequently. The peace in the premises of the house is disturbed. In the extreme cases the parties even decide to abandon each other. The children decide to leave the house of the parents due to lack of emotional space constantly. The daughter-in-law may provoke her husband to abandon her mother-in-law for disability to cope up unreasonable demands. Ways to combat the problem There are no technical solutions to resolve this knotty problem. If you want to resolve the problem and be at peace then both the parties must be willing to solve the problem. If the party is unable to accept the changes then the other party should comprise to a greater extent which may not be possible. Realization and a high level of understanding is one of the optimal solutions to combat the problem. Both the parties should often discuss openly about their childhood and the funny and sad incidents that took place during their childhood days. This activity not only creates bondage but also opens the doors for understanding. The two parties can understand the lifestyle of each other. Knowing the childhood of each other helps the parties understand the physiological patterns formed by each other also. Both the parties should not develop a very high feeling about themselves. They should understand that they both have their limitations since they are human-beings. They should understand that they both depend upon each other at some point or the other. They both should realize the peace that can be built by a means of co-operation. When both the parties are co-operative they can complete the tasks very peacefully. This problem commonly occurs between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. The mother-in-law should realize that her daughter-in-law is customized to the atmosphere of education and profession and hence suddenly coping up the domestic activities is not an easy task for her. At the same time the daughter-in-law should also realize that her mother-in-law was not enough lucky to be educated by her parents and hence she cannot be professionally competent and understand the professional world. Both the parties should realize the theory of limitations and both of them cannot be satisfied as per their wants. Nobody in the world is satisfied according to their wants because human wants are only unlimited. They should realize the easiness of expecting and difficulty of implementing. Especially in the initial stage when a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law meet each other they cannot live with peace with each other because both of them meet from the different worlds. Everybody should develop the attribute of respecting each other. When one learns to respect each other peace can be established between the two parties. A mother-in-law should realize that the woman of today struggle with pain to earn bread for their family. The daughter-in-law at the same time should realize that her mother-in-law once underwent a lot of pain to bring up her family and she has once undergone many economic and social hardships. To build a close relationship with each the two parties can enjoy with each other periodically such as going out for a cinema, restaurants, shopping and many other fun-filled activities. They can also organize to celebrate the birthday of each other . Both the parties should purposely spend time with each other whenever they are free. This activity creates an emotional bondage very quickly. If both the parties are interested with the topic of spirituality then the formula works wonderfully because both the parties require spirituality in life to create peace.

Generation gap and its impact on economic growth

Workers of different generations often complain about one another as their opinions, values, attitudes, and approaches to work differ. This might lead to a reduction in labor productivity that can negatively impact the economic growth of any nation. In this paper, we used generation mix indices to analyze whether generation gap has any impact on economic growth. Using Thailand's data between 1961 to 2019, we found that when generations were intensely mixed, economic growth did suffer.

1. Introduction

Many studies show that population structural change can have a long-lasting impact on economic growth. Song (2013) finds that the economic growth of 13 ASEAN countries between 1965 to 2009 has a positive relationship with the working population growth, while having a negative relationship with the total number of population. Kim (2016) shows that the population structural change in OECD countries has an impact on its growth in the last decade. The explanation why population structure can have an impact on economic growth is usually explained through the change in labor productivity and labor supply ( Fent et al., 2008 ). With aging and aged society, fertility and mortality declines, dependency ratio increases, the number of working population decreases (a reduction in labor supply), therefore the production possibility in each country reduces. Apart from an increase in dependency ratio, another important factor that can influence economic growth is labor productivity. OECD (2020) states that the labor productivity is determined by 2 components: own individual contribution such as effort and skill, and collective contribution from the interactions with other workers. The current literature explains that a reduction in labor productivity in an aging/aged society comes from a larger share of old workers with low productivity and a smaller share of young workers with high productivity ( An and Jeon, 2006 ; Maestas et al., 2016 ; Bawazir et al., 2020 ), evidence of the first component of labor productivity. However, none of the literature considers the second component, the interactions with other workers ( OECD, 2020 ).

Generational differences that lead to generation gap 1 issue has long been discussed in workplaces. Workers of different generations often complain about other generations as their opinions, work values, work attitudes, and approach to work differ. Psychology and sociology literature defined each generation and suggested that their differences can lead to generational tension ( Mannheim, 1952 ; Ryder , 1965 ; Grenier, 2007 , etc.). They suggested that social and historical events often influence and shape social consciousness and perspective of an individual ( Mannheim, 1952 ; Strauss and Howe, 1991 , 1997 ). There were distinct cohorts throughout history that shared characteristics and values. Each of the cohort goes through different phases of life, shares the same historical events making population in the same cohort share distinct set of beliefs, attitudes, values, and behaviors. Strauss and Howe (1991 , 1997) also discussed the generation gap idea where different generations developed different ways of looking at the world and the way they work. Therefore, when their work values differ, this can lead to strategic problems in organizations. Research in management discussed ways to mitigate conflicts in workplaces due to generation gaps ( Subramanian, 2017 ; Jirasevijinda, 2018 ; Cismaru and Iunius, 2020 , etc.). In economics, there were discussions on how different generations vary in their wages, earnings, employment, and financial management ( Alfonso and Torrini, 2007 ; Pisani-Ferry, 2016 ; Carlin et al., 2019 ). However, the impact of generational differences on economic growth has been neglected in the literature. Even though there are economic models that take into account of differences in population (such as an assumption of heterogeneous preferences), none focuses on how generation disparity can affect economic outcomes when they are mixed in the labor force.

In this paper, we utilize the generational differences concept in psychology and sociology to see whether conflicts raised when population of different generations are mixed together in a workplace, can lower the economic growth. Since none of the studies done so far, has shown a direct impact of generation differences on economic growth, we aim to be the first analysis in doing so. To this end, we use the generation mix indices calculated in Harnphattananusorn and Puttitanun (2021) that measure the complexity of the generation mix to use them to analyze their impacts on economic growth. Using the population and economic growth data from Thailand between 1961 and 2019, we find that generation gap negatively relates to the economic growth. Therefore, when the world's population is aging, countries in the world is experiencing growth in the number and proportion of older persons in their population, older generation may have to prolong their retirement, and newer generation may have to quickly join the labor force, the generation gap problem can be more intense. It is important to recognize the generational difference as another dimension of population diversity that can have an impact on labor productivity and economic growth.

The rest of the paper is organized as followed: Section 2 provides information on definition of generations and their differences. Section 3 described conceptual framework, methodology, and data. Results are presented in Section 4 , and concluding remarks are in Section 5 .

2. Generation differences

In defining each generation, the literature generally uses the year that they were born. Even though minor variations exist, we can summarize each generation in Table 1 .

Generational cohort theory discussed by researchers in anthropology, sociology, and psychology suggests that people in each cohort exhibit similar characteristics, preferences, and values toward different aspects of life, and each cohort thinks and behaves differently. Not only people of different age group usually have different aspects of life, but their thoughts or how people feel about a given issue is also shaped by their historical and life events when they grow up ( Becton et al., 2014 ; The Pew Research Center, 2015 ).

Greatest generation was termed for those who were born before 1928. They were the ones that fought in World War II. Silent generations were the children of the Great Depression and World War II. Their “Silent” label refers to their image as conformist and civic minded. Baby boomers were part of the peak in fertility that began in 1949, after the end of World War II. Generation X is defined by the relatively low birth rates compared to the Baby Boom generation. Nimngern (2018) and Francis and Hoefel (2018) describe Baby Boomer generation's behavior as idealism, revolutionary, collectivist, serious, and hard working. Generation Xs are materialistic, competitive, confidence, individualistic, and interested in technology. Generation Ys are globalist, questioning, and oriented to self. They grew up with technology and therefore are technology-able.; Generation Zs are realistic, fast learner, and have a tendency to work in informal sector.

Since each generation has different work values, different views on what is important in life, their attitudes toward works as well as the working styles can be different ( Glass, 2007 ). This is often referred to as the generation gap. Having a large generation gap can create conflicts, poor performance, and low morale in the workplace. All of these can lower the productivity of workers and in turns hurt the whole economy.

Just as it is important to recognize the many dimensions of diversity including gender, age, race, and culture that shape how workers behave, we must also then recognize that generation gap can influence labor productivity as well.

3. Conceptual framework, data, and methodology

From the literature in Psychology, Sociology, and Management fields, when population of different generations are mixed together in a workplace, they might have conflicts due to their differences ( Becton et al., 2014 ; Dittman, 2005 , among others). Hence, we can conclude that:

Once workers have conflicts, the productivity of workers drop because they might have to spend time resolving conflicts, adjusting their working styles, etc. Moreover, work organizations need to find solutions to reduce these conflicts, use resources to mitigate the problems, and therefore having less resources to invest on increase efficiency and other economic outputs. Therefore,

Therefore, the following function ( Eqn 4 ) can be used to explain the direction of the impact of generation mix and other factors on economic output growth.

where gdpgrt is the economic output growth measured by real GDP growth rate in year t ; inflationt is the inflation rate in year t proxied by consumer price index; savgrt is the saving growth rate in year t ; pop1564grt is the working population growth rate in year t ; techt is the technology growth rate in year t ; Gindext is the generation mix measure in year t ; and et is the error term of the model.

To measure the technology growth rate in year t ( tech t ), we can estimate it using the Solow residual concept from estimating the model below:

where Kt is the real gross fixed capital in year t (rgfcf); Lt is the labor force size in year t (labor).

To quantify the level of generation mix, we need a measure that can capture the complexity of generational differences at a point in time. Therefore, such measure must consider the number of generations, the size of each generation, and how they compared to one another. We assume that the generation differences issue becomes more intense when generations are more mixed. Harnphattananusorn and Puttitanun (2021) created several generation mix indices that measure the intensity of generation mix, which takes into account of number of generations, the absolute size of each generation, and the relative size of each generation compared to others in the labor force in a given period of time following methods that Biologists measure the diversity of different species in a community using biodiversity indices. 2 Based on Beals et al. (1999) , even though there are many biodiversity indices, four common measures are the Simpson Index (D) ( Simpson, 1949 ), the Shannon Index (HS) ( Shannon and Weaver, 1949 ), the Brillouin Index (HB) ( Pielou, 1969 ), and the Pielou's evenness index (J) ( Pielou, 1966 ). 3

The data on the number of Thai population born in different cohorts over the years 1960–2019 is collected from the World Bank. Since we are interested in the effect of generation gap on economics outcomes especially on the workplace productivity, we restricted our samples to those population aged between 15 and 60 (based on the working population definition in Thailand). Since our data covers the information since 1960, we have 6 generations in our dataset: Generation Greatest, Generation Silent, Generation Babyboom, Generation X, Generation Y, and Generation Z as shown in Figure 1 . As can be seen in Figure 1 , our data set is dominated by generation Babyboom that spans out over 59 out of 60 observations. In contrast, generation Z is the smallest group in the data set as they recently started joining the labor force.

Applying these four common methods of calculating biodiversity indices mentioned earlier on Thai population born in different cohorts over the years 1960–2019 data (collected from the World Development Indicators Data Set, World Bank), Harnphattananusorn and Puttitanun (2021) calculated these four generation mix indices to measure how diverse and even the population in different generations are in a given year, or how intense the generation mix is in each period as shown in Figure 2 . As can be seen in Figure 2 , the generation mix indices move consistently, with Simpson's index move in the opposite direction compared to the other three indices by its design. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient 4 is used to check for the validity and reliability of these 4 indices. Generally, Cronbach's alpha coefficient varies between 0 and 1 where the minimum level of Cronbach's alpha is around 0.65–0.8 to accept the validity of these indices ( Cronbach, 1951 ). Our calculation is 0.908 suggested that these 4 indices are valid and reliable.

Generation mix indices.

The data on Thai economy: real GDP growth rate, real gross fixed capital formation to measure capital stock, consumer price index to calculate for inflation, working population growth rate are collected from the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council, Thailand website ( Table A1 ). Summary statistics of the data used in the estimation are presented in Table 2 5 :

From Table 2 , we can see that the average of the GDP growth rate ( gdpgr ) over 59 years is 5.991% with the highest rate being 13.288% and the lowest rate being -7.634%. Moreover, the average inflation rate ( inflation ) over 59 years is 4.174% which had a large variation between -0.9% to 24%, the same as savings growth rate ( savgr ) that varied between -28.601% and 51.602% with the average being 11.637%. These large variation of the GDP growth rate, inflation rate, and savings growth rate could be because the data covers the time before, during, and after the Asian economic crisis. The working population growth rate ( pop1564gr ) varied between 0.038% to 3.44%, with the average of 2.077% annually. The steady working population growth rate in Thailand is one of the reason that Thailand enjoyed an increase in the real GDP growth in Thailand. As for the generation mix indices ( G index ), although all four indices are consistently move in the same direction, the values of HS , J , and D indices vary between 0.312 to 1.258, while the HB index varies between 2.10 to 6.262.

Since our data set 6 covers the time span of 59 years from 1961 to 2019, we need to check for stationary in our data set. The results are shown in Table 3 .

Even though the majority of the variables are stationary (I(0)), pop1564gr and Gindex (HB) are not. We simply cannot use OLS method to estimate Eq. (1) . To appropriately estimate Eq. (1) , we need to use an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model that allows for a combination of I(0) and I(1) variables ( Nkoro and Uko, 2016 ). ARDL approach to cointegration provide realistic and efficient estimates irrespective whether the underlying variables are I(0), I(1), or a combination of both ( Pesaran and Shin, 1999 ; Pesaran et al., 1996 ). Therefore, based on the unit root test in Table 3 , where the variables are of different order of integration, the ARDL Cointegration approach is an appropriate estimation model. Moreover, the ARDL Cointegration approach allows us to examine the impact of the generation mix on economic growth from the short run to the long run.

For the model diagnostic, we use the Durbin-Watson D-statistic and Breusch-Godfrey LM test to perform the Autocorrelation test and use the CUSUM plots to diagnose model stability.

ARDL model for one independent and dependent variables can be written in the following form ( Eqn 6 ):

where β 1 , β 2 , β 3 , β 4 , β 5 , and β 6 are the long run coefficients. When cointegration exists, then the equation of ARDL can be expressed as Eq. (5) . Note that the critical tests for Bound F-statistic, uses the lower bound and upper bound at the 1 % level are 6.8670 and 7.7748, respectively. The optimal lags in ARDL ( p,q,r,s,u,v ) are chosen from the AIC, and SBC tests.

If the computed value of the F statistics exceeds the upper critical bound, then there exists cointegration. We need to estimate both the long run and short run models. The short run model is the mechanism of adjustment and the speed of adjustment of the model to a long run equilibrium.

Estimating the short run equation using Error Correction Model (ECM) uses the following form ( Eqn 7 ):

where θ , λ are short run coefficients and γ is the speed of adjustment toward long run equilibrium.

The results from the ARDL model consist of 3 parts. The first one shows the adjustment coefficient when there is a change that makes variables deviate from the long run relationship. The second part shows the long run relationship of the variables and the last part shows the error correction. Table 4 shows the results from the ARDL model where each of the columns use different generation mix indices described in the last section.

The crisis dummy variable, the dummy variable taking value 1 during the economic crisis (between 1997-2001) and zero otherwise, to control for unusual data in the model. The optimal lag ARDL(p,q,r,s,u,v) are chosen from the AIC and SBC tests, and D.(variable name) signifies the first difference of the variable, while LD.(variable name) is the lag difference of the variable.

First, all 4 models passed the Bound test showing the long run relationship among the variables. Second, all adjustment coefficients are negative showing that when there are deviations from the long run equilibrium, variables can adjust to get back to the long run equilibrium path. Our adjustment coefficients are well within the normal speed of adjustment (values between 0 and -2, Loayza and Ranciere (2005) ).

In all 4 models, the qualitative results of the long run relationship estimates are similar with one exception. Only the HB generation mix index is negatively significant 7 (in column (1)) which we can interpret as when there is more generation mix in the workforce, it will lead to a reduction in the economic growth as measured by GDP growth rate. To be specific, a one standard deviation increases in the HB generation mix index, the GDP growth rate will be lowered by 18%. 8 This result supports studies in the anthropology, sociology, and psychology literature that suggest that generational differences can negatively impact the work morale and therefore reduces workers’ performances at the point where it leads to a reduction in economic growth rate.

Other control variables that influence the economic growth in the model behave as expected. Inflation negatively reduces growth while savings, technological change, working population growth rate can enhance economic growth.

The results found in the analysis confirm the findings in economics literature that to enhance economic growth, the main factors are technological change and improved human capital embedded in the labor force. Apart from validating what were found in the literature, our analysis also discovered that another factor that can influence economic growth is generational differences. It is because generational differences can alter workers' performance when they must work with one another. Therefore, organizations and government should also pay attention to this issue and try to amend the differences between generations. Increase communications and allow workers from different generations to learn from and engage with each other might help reduce the tension at work and improve workers’ productivities and hence, lead to a positive economic outlook for a nation.

4.1. Model specification test

We use the Durbin-Watson D-statistic and Breusch-Godfrey LM test to perform the Autocorrelation test and found no autocorrelation problem as the Durbin-Watson D statistic (14, 54) is 2.174 and the Breusch-Godfrey LM test shown in Table 5 .

To test for the heteroskedasticity, White's test and Breusch-Pagan/Cook-Weisberg test were used 9 and no heteroskedasticity problem was found in our model. To test for the stability, we use the CUSUM squared, as shown in Figure 3 . As we can see from Figure 3 , the model passed the stability test.

5. Conclusion

Even though generational cohort theory has been discussed in anthropology, sociology, and psychology field, it has been neglected in the economics. Since each generation has different life experience, their views, values, attitudes, and work approaches might differ, these concepts are known as generation gap. When they work with one another, there might be tensions, and arguments, which can lower their labor productivities and therefore, reduces economic growth.

As a first attempt in studying impact of generational differences on economic growth, this paper uses data on the number of Thai working population in each generation to determine the intensity of generation mix in Thailand and use it to analyze its impact on economic growth. We find that when generation are highly mixed, the economic growth tends to be lower. As such, the generation gap should be one of the issues that work organizations and government pay attention to and try to amend the differences between generations. As suggested by studies in Management field, organizations need to recognize their differences and be flexible in their human resources practices and strategies that allow for workers' differences. Increase communications among workers of different generations and programs where workers from different generations to learn from and engage with each other would allow the workers to build relationships with each other. By doing so, it would help reduce the tension at work and improve workers’ productivities and hence, lead to a positive economic outlook for a nation.

However, our analysis was only on one country's data, Thailand. Expanding the analysis to other countries would help understanding the impact of generation differences and how they mix in the labor force on economic growth. There might be variations of the impact by countries at different development levels or different regions. Moreover, in extending this work, one might model the pass-through mechanism which generation gap leads to a reduction in economic growth where differences in workers behavior in choosing jobs, conducing work affect their decision to supply work as well as their consumption behavior, which will affect the economic growth.

As explained in the text, the reasons might be due to the differences in the size of each index. The HB index is larger and has a larger standard deviation (see Table 2 ), which allow the model to detect the change in generation mix on economic growth, while the size of the other 3 indices have small standard deviation. However, even though the other indices are insignificant, the direction of their impacts on economic growth is the same as that of HB index. In any case, the interpretation of this results must be done with care. One might also do more analyses covering more years or expand the analysis to other countries for the robustness check.

Indices Formula:

Simpson's index measures the probability that any two individuals drawn at random from a large community belong to the same species.

where n = total number of individuals of each species.

N = total number of organisms of all species

The value of D ranges between 0 and 1 where 0 represents infinite diversity and 1 represents no diversity. The drawback of Simpson's diversity index is that it is heavily weighted toward the most abundant species.

Shannon Index accounts for rare species in a community.

where p i is the proportion of individuals found in the i th species. The values of Shannon index are often found to fall between 1.5 and 3.5.

Brillouin Index is calculated using the following formula:

where N is the total number of individuals in the community and n i is the number of individuals in the i th species. This index places more emphasis on species richness and is sensitive to sample size. Since the population in each generation reach millions, therefore, to directly use the index as-is is impossible. Harnphattananusorn and Puttitanun (2021) made an adjustment and calculated it as: HB = l n ( N 2 ) − ∑ l n ( n i 2 ) N where n i is the total working population for generation i in each year and N is the total working population for each year. The value was extremely small, so they multiply it by -10 6 .

Pielou's evenness index measures how close in numbers each species in an environment is. Pielou's evenness ranges between 0 and 1 where 0 means no evenness and 1 means complete evenness.

A generation gap happens when there is a noticeable difference in age (an entire generation) between two people. It often becomes a cause of conflict between parents and children. The generation gap is explained as the difference between views and ideologies between people belonging to two different generations. It can be a difference in political opinions, religious beliefs, or general attitude towards life.

Origin of Generation Gap

The principle of fractional generation gap was introduced in the 1961s. During that time, the younger generation was questioned about their parents’ beliefs and almost everything. They were also separated from their parents in nearly everything.

This included his religious beliefs, political views, moral values, relationship advice, and even his favorite music that he loved. Eminent sociologists such as Karl Mannheim looked at the differences between generations in how generations in different situations separated themselves from each other.

Generation Gap – An Interesting Concept

The generation gap is usually the cause of conflict between children and their parents. It is a fascinating concept. If there were no such difference in the world, then the world would have been quite different. Each generation establishes its fashion trends, talks in its preferred language, accelerates the development of science and technology and discovers new inventions.

Changes Due To Generation Gap

There have been many changes in society due to the generation gap, especially in India, where the joint family practice was already prevalent. Later the approach of separate family settlement started in India , and this is also a result of the generation gap.

Nowadays, people need privacy and want to live their life in their way, but the joint family practice is the main obstacle. In this way, many people are living separate families. Similarly, many changes occurring at different levels of society are the result of the generation gap.

Generation Gap Indicators

1. family system.

People belonging to the older generation lived in a joint family and believed in sharing and caring for things. However, this ideology deteriorated over time. The present generation wants autonomy, and very few want to follow the traditional way of living in a joint family. There has been considerable change in the overall lifestyle of the people.

2. Languages

Hindi spoken by people before pre-independence is quite different from today’s Hindi language and this change did not come suddenly. This change came into presence from generation to generation. Each generation creates a distinct identity of its style. This change in form consistently makes conversation between people belonging to different ages at home as well as the workplace sometimes tricky.

Attitude at Work

While the people of the older generation were good at taking directions from elders and loyal to their officers, these days people get bored of their jobs very quickly and try to change their jobs or quit within a few years. Huh. Generation Y people practice in modernization and want to share and apply their unique ideas to their officers rather than blindly following their guidelines.

Behavior towards women

Generation Classification

It has been seen that different generations of people behave differently in different situations. Generations have been categorized into various names based on their attitudes, beliefs, opinions and all beliefs. The extension of this classification is as follows:

Conservative

These people associate with the groups who were born before 1945 and are above 70 years of age. It is said that these people follow the order well and are satisfied by working efficiently.

They like to share their experiences with younger generations and to be around those who appreciate their knowledge and expertise. Further, they are known to be loyal to their officer. Most of them spend their full activity and lives for the same organization and remain faithful to that organization.

Generation X

These people were born between 1946 and 1965. People of this generation are hard workers, but most are not familiar with the feedback. They also need money and publicity in the form of prizes. Since most of them don’t live comfortably, they make sure that their children get everything they want. They want them to be appreciated. They wish their officers and children to accept that they are valuable and necessary. The absence of all these things creates annoyance between them.

Generation Y

It is a society of people born between 1980 and 1999. Most of them have just entered the working age. This group is interested in engaging in meaningful work and is also forward in giving their feedback towards their work.

People of this generation are quite creative. They like to work with creative individuals and in places where their creativity is allowed to be explored. It is a source of inspiration for them and keeps them alive. It is a generation that gets bored very quickly. Unlike traditionalists, they change their jobs quite frequently.

How To Fill This Gap?

People of the older origination should understand that their children are born in another age and hence their mindset is different from them. Parents and grandparents need to pay attention to why their children are behaving differently and have different opinions, rather than blindly applying their rules and ideas. Parents should be their friends to understand their children’s moods. On the other side, children and youngers should tribute to their parents.

Humankind is continually evolving and hence the ideologies and approach of people belonging to different generations have changed. Although it is perfectly fine to have a different opinion from any other, sometimes it can also become a cause of conflict.

Taking the International English Language Testing System ( IELTS ) exam is a critical step for students and professionals wanting to go to study or work in an English-speaking country. However, for non-native English speakers, some parts of the test can be challenging.

Ordinary essays can land you a 5-6 band score, but with a little more practice, you can get to an 8-band essay. Here is a sample essay on ‘Generation Gap’.

Modern families are a curious mix of new and old relationships. At the intersection of traditional beliefs and skepticism lies the generation gap. This gap is the difference in beliefs, mannerisms, and culture that emerges naturally between the two generations. However, it is not always a curse as one would imagine. My family is one such example.

My parents and I form a nuclear family. I followed my parents’ religious and cultural beliefs as a child. Although as I grew in age and cognitive functioning, I began to question their beliefs and practices. While my parents did not respond kindly, my questions never ceased.

My worldview became increasingly modern with the intake of social media and pop culture. On the other hand, my parents still found it challenging to navigate technology. One would expect the generation gap to pull people apart in such a case. Except with my family, it did not quite go that way.

Regardless of the different worlds my parents and I were growing into, we never stopped communicating openly. It was one of the first and most essential rules established in our house. The second was always to respect people around us, irrespective of age. So, even when we had differing opinions, we would take the time to listen and then reason what the logically or morally right stance was. We would understand where the conflict stemmed from and each compromise to meet the other halfway.

My parents, owing to their age and experience, helped me resolve many problems that otherwise seem unsolvable. In exchange, I help them understand the technology and modern lifestyles. So, while generation gaps exist, we must not let them alienate us from the people we love.

A generation gap is a distance in cultural and moral beliefs between two separate age groups. Every generation holds onto its own value sets and social sensibilities, creating disparity when these generations live together.

I live in a joint family with my paternal grandparents, parents, uncle, aunt, siblings, and cousins. This paves the way for the existence of multiple generation gaps and the ensuing struggle.

My grandparents are orthodox in their values and traditions, which means that some of their beliefs and prejudices are age-old and problematic in the modern world. On the other hand, my parents belong to the technological generation. They understand the modern lifestyle better and identify with my daily struggles. However, their belief systems are not entirely liberal due to their parental influences. All of this often becomes a cause for dispute in the family.

No matter how modern or traditional, all parents have a mental image of how they want their child to be. They are usually uncompromising about their stances and end up using their age as a factor to have their way. This creates a lack of understanding and communication in the family, causing one or both sides to feel alienated and side-lined. Over time, the generation gap widens and leaves no room for repair.

It is natural to want to live your life by your principles. However, it should not come at the price of essential relationships. Having diverse views, ideas, and opinions can instead add to the family and help everyone grow individually. There will always be misunderstandings, but listening to people with empathy and cultivating a broader outlook can offset the generation gap and re-establish peace.
