What’s Good Games is run by Andrea Rene, who you might have seen on GameStop TV and Kinda Funny Games; Brittney Brombacher of BlondeNerd.com; and Kristine Steimer of IGN and PlayStation. The three have vast knowledge of the industry, from PR to hosting and editorial work, all from the perspective of women — which let’s face it, is something we absolutely need more of in games. In terms of production quality, it doesn’t get much better than What’s Good Games .

Perhaps you want a hefty podcast that runs for close to three hours for many of its episodes. If so, the Giant Bombcast might be for you. Hosted by the crew over at Giant Bomb , this weekly podcast goes in-depth with news, recent releases, and messages from the audience. The Giant Bomb team is small, so the audience tends to connect with them much more than a site with a huge editorial staff. What you get with Giant Bombcast is a thoughtful, funny show, with less of a focus on the business side of the industry and more emphasis on playing games.

Originally starting around the time Kinda Funny first began in 2015, PS I Love You XOXO was a lighthearted PlayStation-focused show, starring ex-IGN editors Greg Miller and Colin Moriarty. After Moriarty’s departure from the company in 2017, the show ended but was brought back in early 2020 with Blessing Adeoye serving as Miller’s co-host. The format of the show has changed slightly since its inception, but it still offers a mix of old and new PlayStation coverage, from the point of view of some of the industry’s most passionate professionals. The show tends to keep things light, but that doesn’t detract from the smart conversations the two hosts have with each other and the massive audience.

Given the trio’s connections within the industry, it’s a smart show with lots of humor and, of course, discussions about the weather.

Spawn on Me is a video game podcast focused on people of color in the industry. Led by industry veteran Kahlief Adams, the show advocates for more inclusion of non-white individuals in game development and games media. Adams highlights important people of color in the games industry and gives them a platform to shine while highlighting their work. Many of the individuals who appear on the show offer insightful and interesting takes on topics including the editorial side of games coverage, development, and everything in between. It’s one of the smaller shows on this list, in terms of listenership, but that doesn’t make it any less important.

Unlike most of the shows on this list, Retronauts is a history podcast mostly about retro games — hence the name. In it, the panel discusses important games of the past and how they’ve impacted the current games of today. They also feature guests who offer intelligent takes on the history of games, spanning 40 years. The show used to be affiliated with 1Up, but after the outlet went belly up, Retronauts continued. While the crew doesn’t exclusively talk about retro games, the topics are often tied to older games from the past in some way.

The hosts of Waypoint Radio are Vice staffers Austin Walker, Rob Zacny, Patrick Klepek, and Ricardo Contreras. Your Vocation defines your role in combat in Dragon's Dogma 2. Everything from your skills to what weapons and armor you can use is tied to this class. You will pick from just a handful at the beginning of the game, but can easily change Vocations later on, as well as unlock more than twice as many new options than what you start with. It can take a while to really get a feel for a Vocation and how it performs in combat, as well as to look through all of its skills and augments, before knowing if it's worth sticking with to level up. Personal preference will play a part to some degree, but these Vocations have the most potential to make you the strongest Arisen in history. The best vocations in Dragon's Dogma 2

You can pick from 4 Vocations at the start of Dragon's Dogma 2, but will end up with a total of 10 by the end of the game if you unlock them all. New Vocations are unlocked by completing quests, but they are almost unmissable. Four Vocations -- the Magick Archer, Mystic Spearhand, Trickster, and Warfarer -- can only be used by your character and not any Pawns. Warfarer There's very little downside to being a jack-of-all-trades in Dragon's Dogma 2, which is exactly what the Warfarer is. This is the only Vocation that can use any weapon in the game AND learn any skill from other Vocations. This is the only Vocation that really lets you build whatever class you want and gives you the ability to adapt to any situation you find yourself in. The main downside to this class is it has the lowest base stats, but that is a small price to pay for how versatile you can be. Mystic Spearhand Hybrid Vocations are all quite powerful, but we put the Mystic Spearhand at the top of the heap. This class turns you into a fighter that can take advantage of magic to output crazy damage. The two almost overpowered abilities you get here are the ability to slow enemies for a short time and to create a magical mimic that doubles all your actions. It is great for both crowd control and large single targets, but takes a while to unlock and lacks some range. Warrior If you're going to be a straight-up melee fighter, you might as well hit with the biggest weapon you can, right? The Warrior swings swords large enough to make Guts blush and is a full-on tank. You won't be doing anything fancy with this vocation beyond charging up and swinging as hard as possible. The obvious drawback is any flying or ranged enemy will counter you, so bring some Pawns in those classes to cover your bases. Sorcerer For those who fancy themselves a pure mage, stick to the Sorcerer over the actual Mage vocation. While the Mage is more focused on healing, it is the Sorcerer who gets the best offensive spells you will want to be casting. If you have a second Sorcerer with you, you can even sync up and decrease your casting time. If not, you will need some tanks to take aggro while you deal with some slightly long casting times and low total health. Thief As far as the starting Vocations go, the Thief is the one we find the most fun and viable for the entire game. This is a light and speedy build focused on critical hits and being able to climb and hang on to large beasts. Once on, you have a number of great skills to stagger and knock down an enemy so the rest of your squad to gang up on it. Just don't get hit because you're one of the squishier Vocations.

I listen to a lot of podcasts, and it’s a safe bet that you do, too. For many of us, podcasts take the place of radio, recorded books and even music as our go-to listening experience. Whatever your taste or interest, you can find a podcast to match it. That goes for games, big time.

In the early 2000s, I was part of one of the very first gaming podcasts. It was called the “Eat My Bomb” podcast, and was part of the now-defunct gamershell.com website. Maybe because an actual audio engineer produced it, the quality was good. It was a rare bird in format. Instead of dudes just talking about games, it was made up of scripted segments, including news, reviews, interviews and humor. We had a fun few years, until the host/producer went to work for Irrational Games and the BioShock franchise.

Some of my favorite, all-time great game podcasts are no longer with us. Maybe you remember the hilarious and irreverent Games for Windows podcast , hosted by Jeff Green. In its heyday and before the untimely death of co-host Ryan Davis in 2013, the Giant Bomb podcast was also amazing. It remained excellent for several years after, but something of a spark went missing. What both of those podcasts had in common was wit and a no bullshit approach to games.

Of course, now there are game podcasts geared to literally every aspect of the hobby. New podcasts come and go every day. It’s impossible to keep up, but here are a few of the best ones, in no particular order. They all have several things in common. Each is smart, witty and interesting.

A spinoff of the McElroy podcast empire, the Besties features Griffin McElroy, Justin McElroy, Chris Plante, and Russ Frushtick. They recently wrapped up ten years of shows, with smart and witty discussion of current and classic games.

Bonfireside Chat is the best Dark Souls-focused podcast. Featuring hosts Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross, past episodes include painstaking walkthroughs of FromSoftware’s games.

The hosts are funny and relatable with deep knowledge that comes from years of combined experience working in different sectors of the industry. They mix updates about new releases with discussions about classic games. Most importantly, in a community that can struggle with inclusivity , they don’t shy away from sharing their experiences as women and parents who love to game.

5. Spawn on Me

Spawn on Me tackles the social issues faced by the gaming community through news, reviews, and in-depth interviews. Hosted by Kahlief Adams, the podcast provides perspective and commentary and spotlights underrepresented groups in the industry, giving gamers, developers, and journalists of color a platform to showcase their work.

Rather than cover current events, Get Played (formerly known as How Did This Get Played? ) is a comedy podcast about some of the worst and weirdest games ever produced. Created by Earwolf, it’s a spin-off of the film-focused How Did This Get Made? Hosted by comedians Heather Anne Campbell and Nick Wiger, it’s a positive and often laugh-out-loud funny look at some of the more bizarre titles to ever be released. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to test their obscure gaming knowledge, and it’s great for binging: there’s a large backlog of over 140 episodes.

7. Sacred Symbols

While other shows on this list take a platform-agnostic approach, Sacred Symbols is specifically a PlayStation podcast. Despite the niche, hosts Colin Moriarty and Chris “Ray Gun” Maldonado have more than enough to talk about, what with all the PlayStation platforms — PS4, PS5, PSVR, PS Vita — the many games, and the franchises that have grown around those games. In fact, most episodes clock in at around two hours. Moriarty and Maldonado know their stuff and don’t pander, while keeping things engaging and funny. They also take questions and comments from the listeners. Sacred Symbols is an excellent example of how to do a podcast within a niche topic and make it broadly appealing.

8. Retronauts

Retronauts carves out its space in the gaming podcast scene by exploring the history of video games and the development of the industry. Hosts Bob Mackey and Jeremy Parish offer listeners a better understanding of how old games, both successful and unsuccessful, have shaped the games that we play today. The weekly podcast typically focuses on a single topic and evokes plenty of nostalgia along the way.

9. Axe of the Blood God

Long-time gaming journalists Kat Bailey and Nadia Oxford host this podcast centered on role-playing games (known as RPGs in the gaming community). When I’m not playing games, talking about games or writing about games I love nothing more than listening to other people talk about games with some of the best video game podcasts!

Whether I’m out for a run, on a road trip with my partner and our dog Riku or just doing chores around the house, a good gaming podcast never fails to lift me up.

There are plenty of podcasts available nowadays with platforms like Spotify and Google even trying to entice users by hosting podcasts that can’t be found anywhere else!

With so many voices wanting to talk about the world of gaming it can be hard to know who to listen to and that’s’s why we’ve put together this list.

Whether you want to keep up to date with the latest gaming news and trends or are looking for some gaming related entertainment, these are the 10 best video game podcasts of 2023.

When it comes to audible entertainment centred around the world of video games you’d be hard pressed to find a more engaging and entertaining podcast than The Back Page Podcast.

Hosted by games media writers and self-described ‘giant men’ Matthew Castle and Samuel Roberts, The Back Page Podcast features comprehensive discussions around gamings’ present, past and future.

The hosts have a shared history in working within games media and their anecdotes range from rushed interviews with Hideo Kojima to completely embarrassing themselves on a press trip by mistaking horseradish sauce for mash potato…

What’s Good Games is a lively podcast full of charm and funny sentiment from two incredible hosts, Andrea Rene and Brittney Brombacher.

The pair have a combined 30 years of games industry experience and it shows with their deep yet upbeat analysis of gaming culture and news.

It’s not all gaming chat of course with Andrea and Brittney often dipping into random, happy chats between themselves and their guests.

As somebody that tries to champion the positivity of gaming, I find the What’s Good Games podcast a shiny beacon in an industry that can often take itself too seriously. Games are fun and that’s why we play them and What’s Good Gaming is also a lot of fun, and that’s why you should listen!

6. Hideo Kojima Presents Brain Structure

The next entry in our list of the best video game podcasts is pretty niche. Hideo Kojima Presents Brain Structure is a Spotify exclusive podcast that promises to ‘deep dive into Hideo’s brain and shed light on his creative process’.

It’s as wacky and surreal as it sounds although not entirely unexpected from the mind behind Metal Gear franchise and Death Stranding.

The series comes good on it’s premise by allowing Hideo Kojima time to explore and verbalise his creative processes. Listeners will hear first hand how the auteur of game design devours books (not literally) and consumes movies, films, music and games in staggering volume.

Hideo Kojima Presents Brain Structure isn’t just a one-man show famous faces such as RRR movie director S. S. Rajamouli and Death Stranding leading man Norman Reedus.

The podcast even gave us glimpses into his upcoming collaborations with Elle Fanning and Jordan Peele both appearing on the podcast ahead of Kojimas’ current projects DS2 and the recently revealed OD , respectively.

The podcast is presented in Japanese or with English dubbing and currently offers 26 episodes from its first season. Kojima has teased fans by saying a second season is up to them , and while more Brain Structure would be delightful, I have no idea of how he’d manage to fit them into his busy schedule!

7. Game Scoop!

IGN Game Scoop is one of the longest running podcast on our list with over seven hundred episodes and counting.

Host Daemon Hatfield is one of the most upbeat and likeable personalities in the video game media space and brings and fun and joyful exuberance to each and every show.

Daemon is joined by regular ‘Omega Cops’ Samuel Claiborn and Justin Davis as well as other panelists in this weekly show that discusses the the latest news in the games industry.

It’s not just a current affairs show though, with the panels love for retro gaming often taking centre stage and recurring segments highlighting classic gaming magazines from yesteryear.

Fan favourite quiz ’20 questions challenges the Scoop crew every week and feedback from the listeners, including the legendary Big Tony Style, provides interesting discussion topics with a feel-good vibe.

10. Watch Out For Fireballs!

Unlike the majority of entries in our list of the best video game podcasts, Watch Out For Fireballs! doesn’t focus on the current state of the games industry.

Instead, just like ourselves here at Retro Dodo, Watch Out For Fireballs! is a podcast that loves retro games.

Each of Watch out For Fireballs! four hundred plus episodes presents a postmortem of a classic game with titles ranging from Metal Gear Solid 2 to Mario Paint and from Contra to Bioshock .

Every episode follows hosts Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross as they dissect games from yesterday and examine what makes them great (or terrible) and there’s even a fun sketch that precedes each fireside chat.

What video games taught me

A collection of essays on gaming confirms the rich complexity of an art form that remains widely misunderstood.

Writing about video games has a defensive streak. For a good decade now, we’ve been told by the games industry that video games are on the verge of being understood as works of art in the same way as books or films : media products of cultural worth and critical depth. And yet, still, we’re not quite there. There are hundreds of collections of essays where writers expound on their love for books, films, and even television . But not games.

I’ve always been a keen gamer. Some of my most precious childhood memories are populated by figures such as Spyro the dragon and the jankily pixelated face of Pierce Brosnan in James Bond: Nightfire . As an adult, I still play a lot, and now write games myself. I’ve long thought of playing narratively sophisticated video games, such as the open-world, role-playing game Disco Elysium , as a core part of my emotional and intellectual life, rather than a distraction from it. But tell someone you’re interested in video games and, more often than not, you’ll see them re-evaluate you a little, like you’ve said you have a keen academic passion for tic-tac-toe.

A new book presents a strong rebuttal to this kind of thinking. Critical Hits: Writers on Gaming and the Alternate Worlds We Inhabit is a collection of essays and one comic strip edited by the American writers Carmen Maria Machado and J Robert Lennon – 18 pieces of work in which writers who love games as varied as Red Dead Redemption 2 , Alien vs Predator , Clash of Clans , Leisure Suit Larry and Halo are asked to explain themselves.

Some of the pieces take an academic approach to demonstrating that video game narratives and lore are worthy of critical attention. The Mexican-American poet Vanessa Villarreal unpacks the dodgy racial politics of Norse mythological games such as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Dragon Age: Inquisition , and asks us to interrogate how Norse-inflected popular culture feeds and reflects far-right racial fantasies. In “Narnia Made of Pixels” the sci-fi writer Charlie Jane Anders investigates films that depict video games, and thinks about the appeal of disappearing into virtual worlds such as those in Tron and Ready Player One .

These are well-argued, rigorous essays. But I preferred the more personal, less scholarly pieces. Take the essay by the host of the Literary Friction podcast Octavia Bright, on playing Leisure Suit Larry – a comical but decidedly adult game in which a man in his 40s attempts to seduce women – surreptitiously on a family desktop computer as a ten-year-old. Here, Bright expresses how games help us discover who we are, and mirror and shape the real world around us.

Intuitively, we think of playing video games as a loner’s activity. I’ve never been convinced of this, and the writers in this collection don’t seem to be either. Of course, many people play games with others, either in multiplayer mode in person or online, or by handing the controller back and forth between a group. But even if you do play a game alone, there is community to be found. In her introduction to the book, Machado – best known for her memoir In the Dream House –remembers giving a talk at a fundraiser in which she mentioned being stuck at a particular point in the action role-playing game Elden Ring . Afterwards, a group of women came up to offer her their advice on playing it. “There was such joy in the conversation; a peculiar investment in a stranger’s success at some obscure shared task,” she writes.

Another truism about video games is that they are escapist: a way of getting away from ourselves and the real world. There’s no denying that part of the magic of playing a video game is that it lifts you out of reality. In “No Traces”, the Irish poet Stephen Sexton remembers playing Metal Gear Solid with a friend in his youth. “The intimacy of our experience hung on the sense that, for hours on end, neither of us felt like we were physically present in the room.” But for many of the writers in this collection, gaming is a way of connecting with their own bodies, questioning and accepting them.

Several writers discuss how playing video games offered them a chance to experiment with gender identity. In one piece, the game designer and poet Keith S Wilson considers how Final Fantasy ’s mixed-race “monster” character Terra sparked thoughts about his own mixed-race identity as a child. For so many people, playing games in their youth was a first encounter with questions so big and profound that they didn’t even know how to consider them properly at the time. Questions including, as Wilson writes, “What if there is no such thing as justice?” and “What is the human spirit?” But these questions remain with them, and so does the impact of asking them through the process of play. In another essay, the Native American memoirist Elissa Washuta explores parallels between The Last of Us , the game set in a pandemic-ravaged post-apocalyptic society that was recently turned into a television series by HBO, and her own experience shielding from coronavirus due to her autoimmune disorder, Sjögren’s syndrome.

The pandemic looms large in this collection: many of the essays were written during the Covid lockdowns. Read two years later, the book already belongs to a different moment, with lines such as: “Do you remember houses? Other people’s I mean – the way they looked and smelled, how cushy their sofas were, the mysterious contents of their medicine cabinets?” If you’re minded to think about the effect the pandemic had on our psyches, then reading Critical Hits would be a good place to start. I’m not sure I am yet.

The collection is evidence that video games can help us think about who we are as people. Perhaps the best piece is “This Kind of Animal” by the speculative fiction author Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah. In it, he writes about turning to Disco Elysium after the death of his father. The game is, as Adjei-Brenyah notes, a “magnificent literary experience” at a scale not seen in games before or, I would argue, since. In it, you play as an amnesiac detective who must discover how a dead body came to be hanging from a tree in the dead-end town of Martinaise. You make choices about how to proceed with your investigation, and either make progress or fail to do so according to how skilled you are in various different traits, such as Logic, Pain Threshold, Composure and Empathy. Playing the game, Adjei-Brenyah found that questions about his personal character that he was forced to confront after his father’s death were also being posed by the game: “Who are you when that Charm shit doesn’t work? What kind of animal are you actually?” Similarly, playing Ninja Gaiden Black provokes the novelist Alexander Chee to think through aspects of his Korean-American identity and notions of how to live “authentically” as a biracial, queer man.

And games, the collection suggests, are not so unlike real life. What is “real life” anyway? In one essay, J Robert Lennon writes about how the in-game world of Fallout 76 , another post-apocalyptic adventure, began to feel more “real” and expansive to him than his real life teaching online from his house during the Covid lockdowns. Games don’t just exist inside cartridges and the minds of those who play them, either. They have real world consequences. In “Cathartic Warfare”, the Afghan-American fiction author Jamil Jan Kochai considers how playing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare – a shooter in which you inhabit the perspective of a US soldier killing Middle Eastern insurgents – cast him into “some ruptured space between the first-person shooter and the third-person corpse”. He recalls the US military coming to his high school and setting up a recruiting station in the back of a van, where teenagers could play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 .

The most refreshing thing about this collection is that it doesn’t try too hard to defend itself against the notion that games are fun. Of course they are. So is reading books, but most people would describe reading as a productive pursuit. Gaming, to many, is a waste of time – because it is what, too enjoyable? As the novelist Tony Tulathimutte writes, “I could wax poetic about how games and novels offer vivid vicarious experiences and broaden your world-view by putting you in the minds and roles of other people, but that’s disingenuous. I read and play games because I want to and because nobody is making me stop.”

Critical Hits is an exciting, original and rich collection. It made me want to read more, to write more, and – I admit without shame – to play more.

A month ago Arrowhead's CEO revealed the existence of Joel (technically J.O.E.L., in game), a game master running the galactic battle of Helldivers 2 . A human being who gets up in the middle of the night to throw more robots at players if they're doing too well. We at the RPS Electronic Wireless Show podcast think this is a good thing, in broad terms, and we discuss why (but also hope Joel is allowed holidays), as well as the response the community of players has had, which is also very interesting. Plus a straw poll indicates that only one of us would enjoy be at the middle of a maelstrom of chaos and being the Helldivers GM as a job. Bet you can absolutely guess which one of us it was.
