A contentious topic among job seekers is whether to include their GPA on their resume . The tradition of including GPAs on resumes has its roots in the belief that academic performance is a reliable indicator of professional potential. This practice gained momentum when job markets were less saturated, and academic accomplishments could set candidates apart in a smaller sea of applicants. Employers viewed GPAs as a shorthand assessment of a candidate’s diligence, intelligence and ability to meet deadlines and goals.

Trump will face Michael Cohen in court as prosecution nears the end of its case

Stormy Daniels is finished testifying, but another popular target of former President Donald Trump is scheduled to take the witness stand in his criminal trial on Monday — his former lawyer Michael Cohen, multiple sources have told NBC News.

Both Daniels, an adult film actress, and Cohen, Trump's onetime fixer, are outspoken critics of the Republican presidential nominee and key witnesses in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's falsifying business records case. The former president has labeled them both "sleaze bags."

The move to call Cohen comes as a prosecutor said at the end of court Friday that they could rest their case as soon as next week. Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass told the judge that the DA’s office has only two witnesses remaining. Cohen's testimony is expected to last multiple days.

Trump attorney Todd Blanche asked Judge Juan Merchan to bar Cohen from commenting publicly on the case since he’s about to take the stand. He noted that Cohen appeared on TikTok earlier this week wearing a T-shirt showing Trump behind bars wearing an orange jumpsuit. Blanche had previously complained about Cohen posting on social media and doing interviews criticizing Trump during the trial. Cohen had slowed his frequent commentary after Merchan said he may exclude him from the gag order barring Trump from attacking witnesses in the case because of his commentary.

Steinglass said the DA’s office had previously asked Cohen to stop speaking. The judge directed the DA to tell Cohen that the judge was asking him to stop.

Trump fumed about the lack of a gag order for Cohen after the day's proceedings wrapped. “Everybody can say whatever they want” but “I can’t say anything, “ he told a group of reporters in a courthouse hallway. “It’s a disgrace.”

Daniels testified on Tuesday and Thursday, sparring with Trump attorney Susan Necheles during cross-examination about her claim that she had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006. Then-Trump lawyer Cohen paid Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet about the allegation during the 2016 presidential election. Trump later reimbursed Cohen in payments prosecutors charge were covered up with falsified business records. Trump has pleaded not guilty and denied Daniels’ claim.

Earlier in the day, jurors heard continued testimony from Madeleine Westerhout, who was Trump's executive assistant in the White House between 2017 and 2019.

Westerhout had testified on Thursday about how thrilled she was to be working for Trump and broke down in tears when prosecutors asked her about her departure from the White House in August 2019. She said that working for Trump was “amazing” and that he was “a very good boss” who had a close and loving relationship with his wife, Melania Trump.

The portrayal was at odds with testimony from Daniels, who said Trump had told her not to worry about his wife while he was making passes at her in his hotel room after they met at a celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, in 2006.

Westerhout also testified Thursday that Trump was attentive when she delivered him personal checks to sign and that on occasion he would call his company’s chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, if he had questions about any of them — information prosecutors are likely to use to argue Trump was well aware of what he was paying Cohen for.

On Friday, Trump attorney Susan Necheles got Westerhout to say that Trump wasn’t always paying attention when he was signing checks — and he would sometimes be on the phone or in meetings while he did. “He was a person who multitasked, right?” Necheles asked. “Yes,” Westerhout replied.

Necheles also pressed her on details about Trump's reaction when the payment to Daniels became public in 2018.

"He was very upset by it,” Westerhout said. “My understanding is that he knew it would be hurtful to his family. … The whole situation was very unpleasant.”

Westerhout said one of her duties was to act as an intermediary between Trump and the Trump Organization on issues that needed his or the company’s attention, like his travel schedule, mail or phone calls.

She asked Trump's assistant at the company, Rhona Graff, in 2017 for a list of Trump’s contacts, which Graff sent to her, according to an email shown to the jury. The list included information for Cohen and  David Pecker , the former National Enquirer publisher who testified he worked with Trump and Cohen to suppress scandalous stories about Trump during his 2016 campaign.

Westerhout was followed to the stand by Daniel Dixon, an analyst for AT&T who was brought in to authenticate "call detail records" relating to Cohen's cell phone.

Jennie Tomalin, an analyst from Verizon, was also called to authenticate phone records from Keith Davidson, Daniels' former lawyer, and former Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg.

She was followed by Georgia Longstreet, a paralegal for the DA's office, who was brought in to testify about some of then-President Trump's social media postings that prosecutors say were an effort to influence Cohen and other people he was concerned could cause him legal problems.

One of the posts praised Cohen as "a fine person with a wonderful family" before he began cooperating with federal investigators. After he pleaded guilty to charges that included ones related to the Daniels payment, Trump tweeted, “If anyone is looking for a good lawyer, I would strongly suggest that you don’t retain the services of Michael Cohen!”

Longstreet also read aloud texts between then-National Enquirer editor-in-chief Dylan Howard and Gina Rodriguez, who was Daniels' manager. The 2016 texts included Howard telling her he thought Pecker would pay for her story. Pecker said he did not do so because he'd already spent $180,000 to kill two other salacious Trump stories, and he feared doing business with a porn star could harm his paper. But, he said, he did encourage Cohen to pay the money.

Trump attorney Todd Blanche moved for a mistrial at the end of court Thursday, arguing Daniels' testimony — including her claim that Trump didn't use a condom when they had sex — was unfair and prejudicial. He called the condom allegation "a dog whistle for rape."

State Judge Juan Merchan agreed that Daniels shouldn't have been asked about the condom but noted that there was no objection to that line of questioning, which he said befuddled him.

"I don't understand," he said.  

He denied Blanche's mistrial demand, as well as a request that he loosen the gag order barring Trump from attacking witnesses to allow him to respond to Daniels' testimony.

Prosecutors have previously said they are hopeful they'll be able to wrap up their case by May 21.

It's unclear whether Trump will testify in his own defense. He is under no obligation to do so.

Hampton Roads Transit is celebrating 40 years of operating the Oceanfront trolley service known as VB Wave, but the iconic contraptions actually first ambled down Atlantic and Pacific avenues 44 years ago.

Virginia Beach’s original shiny red bell-clanging trolley cars had wood trim and were designed to resemble San Francisco’s cable cars. Today’s trolleys still have that nostalgic feel, but they’re blue.

The city first purchased and operated four trolleys in 1980, according to The Virginian-Pilot archives. They ran Atlantic Avenue between Memorial Day and Labor Day. It cost 25 cents to hop on. Surfboards and bicycles were allowed. Inside were slatted, wood seats and polished brass holding rails along the ceiling.

The trolleys’ original purpose was to make it easier to get around and to alleviate traffic and parking issues — but they quickly became an attraction as well. Passengers could ride on a platform along the back, and the driver would ring an old-fashioned brass bell to announce its arrival, adding to the charm.

Three more trolleys were added in 1981. Ridership reached 450,000 in 1983. Then in 1984 — hence the 40 years anniversary —Virginia Beach sold its fleet to Tidewater Regional Transit, which was eligible for state aid and able to expand the service. A ride from the old Dome to Lynnhaven Mall cost $1 each way in 1984.

Fast forward to 2008. The fleet was in need of costly repairs and was taken out of service. HRT instead experimented with hybrid electric buses on the VB Wave routes. But ridership declined. In 2015, the city paid $2.7 million to bring back cable car replicas. A state grant helped pay for the 11 blue trolleys HRT will operate this summer.

Trolley service took a hiatus summer of 2020 due to the pandemic. In 2023, total ridership was 175,457 on four routes, a far cry from the early days.

VB Wave operations last season cost $2.5 million and generated $146,929 in revenue. Route 30, which travels the length of Atlantic Avenue, was the most used with roughly 121,000 rides in 2023.

Virginia Beach provides nearly $1 million from a tourism tax fund to help fund the trolley service. It’s also supplemented by state and federal funding. But the novelty of the ride has kept the wheels turning, said Ray Amoruso, HRT’s chief planning and development officer.

Route 34, which connected riders to the ViBe Creative District and the sports center, was discontinued this season due to low ridership. Route 35, the bayfront trolley that travels along Shore Drive with a stop at First Landing State Park, will return to 30 minute service frequencies instead of hourly service and will encompass a portion of the former Route 34. Each of the routes are active through the Neptune Festival at the end of September.

In 2022, the city started a pilot program with Freebee, a free ride service, and some people questioned whether it would undercut HRT’s trolley service. But Freebee’s cars hold a limited number of passengers and a notable part of its ridership has been local residents.

“They were plucking maybe a few riders that were visiting from out of town,” Amoruso said.

The city’s contract with Freebee ends soon, and no formal announcement to extend the service has been made although some residents and resort area business owners have asked to continue it until the end of September.

Today’s trolleys can hold up to 28 passengers and are 34 feet long. They feature mahogany wood trim, aluminum wheels, bike racks and open windows in the summer “so you have the ocean breeze coming through,” said Amoruso.

Meeting Trump

Daniels testified she first met and chatted with Trump at a 2006 Lake Tahoe celebrity golf outing where her studio was a sponsor.

He referred to her as “the smart one” and asked her if she wanted to go to dinner, she said. Daniels testified that she accepted Trump’s invitation because she wanted to avoid dinner with her co-workers and thought it might help her career. Trump had his bodyguard get her number, she said.

When they met up later in his penthouse, she appreciated that he seemed interested in the business aspects of the industry rather than the “sexy stuff.” He also suggested putting her on his TV show, “The Apprentice,” a possibility she hoped could help establish her as a writer and director.

She left to use the bathroom and was startled to find Trump in his underwear when she returned, she said. She didn’t feel physically or verbally threatened but realized that he was “bigger and blocking the way,” she testified.

“The next thing I know was: I was on the bed,” and they were having sex, Daniels recalled. The encounter was brief but left her “shaking,” she said. “I just wanted to leave,” she testified.

Payments for silence

Daniels was asked if Trump ever told her to keep things between them confidential, and said, “Absolutely not.” She said she learned in 2011 that a magazine had learned the story of their encounter, and she agreed to do an interview for $15,000 to make money and “control the narrative.” The story never ran.

In 2016, when Trump was running for president, Daniels said she authorized her manager to shop the story around but did not initially receive interest from news outlets. She said that changed in October with the release of the “Access Hollywood” tape in which Trump bragged about grabbing women sexually without asking permission . She said she learned that Cohen wanted to buy her silence.

Mistrial push

Midway through her testimony, Trump’s lawyers moved for a mistrial.

Defense lawyer Todd Blanche argued that Daniels’ testimony about the alleged encounter and other meetings with him had “nothing to do with this case,” and would unfairly prejudice the jury.

The judge rejected it, and he faulted defense attorneys for not raising more of their objections while she was testifying.

Before Daniels took the stand, Trump’s lawyers had tried to stop her from testifying about the encounter’s details, saying it was irrelevant in “a case about books and records.”

Prosecutors countered that Daniels’ testimony gets at what Trump was trying to hide and they were “very mindful” not to draw too much graphic detail. Before Daniels took the stand, they told the judge the testimony would be “really basic,” and would not “involve any details of genitalia.”

While the judge didn’t side with Trump’s lawyers, he acknowledged that some details were excessive. The objections could potentially be used by Trump’s lawyers if he is convicted and they file an appeal.

Cross-examination

Trump’s lawyers tried to attack Daniels’ credibility, suggesting she was motivated by money and that her account has shifted over the years.

“Am I correct that you hate President Trump?” defense lawyer Susan Necheles asked Daniels at one point. Daniels acknowledged she did.

“And you want him to go to jail?” the lawyer asked.

“I want him to be held accountable,” Daniels said. Pressed again whether that meant going to jail, she said: “If he’s convicted.”

The defense pressed Daniels on the fact that she owes Trump hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees stemming from an unsuccessful defamation lawsuit, and on a 2022 tweet in which she said she “will go to jail before I pay a penny.” Daniels dug in at times in the face of pointed questions, forcefully denying the idea that she had tried to extort money from Trump.

Trump whispered frequently to his attorney during Daniels’ testimony, and his expression seemed to be pained at one point as she recounted details about the dinner she says they shared. He shook his head and appeared to say something under his breath as Daniels testified that Trump told her he didn’t sleep in the same room as his wife.

On the way out of the courthouse, Trump called it “a very revealing day.” He didn’t address Daniels’ testimony explicitly but claimed the prosecutors’ case was “totally falling apart.”

Trump’s appearance in court Tuesday, like all other days he’s stuck in the courtroom, means he can’t be out on the campaign trail as he runs for president a third time. It’s a frequent source of his complaints, but Daniels’ testimony in particular might underscore how much of a distraction the trial is from the business of running for president.

While Trump was stuck in a Manhattan courthouse away from voters and unable to speak for much of the day, President Biden was attending a Holocaust remembrance ceremony and condemning antisemitism .

It’s an issue Trump has sought to use against Biden in the campaign by seizing on the protests at college campuses over the Israel-Hamas war .
