Commonly asked questions

What happens when someone passes away in the us.

If they have a will , their appointed executor locates the will, applies to the courts for a ‘Grant of Probate’, approaches financial institutions to close accounts, distributes assets from the accounts according to the will.

If they don’t have a will , someone step up to represent the deceased in the middle of your family’s grief. Others who qualify must give their written consent.

They must create a Schedule of Assets, and apply to the court for ‘Letter of Administration’, and once granted, approach financial institutions, and then distribute assets according to the state’s own formula. You and your family have no say.

Do I need a will?

Main reasons

  • Ensures your assets are not lost/go unclaimed by your family
  • Secure guardianship for any minor children, and ensure they are financially and emotionally cared for by someone you trust
  • Appoints a person you trust and have informed to execute your estate
  • Prevents confusion regarding your wishes
  • Give to charitable causes you care about

It is particularly important if:

  • you have children under 21
  • you have no clear heirs, and there’s a high likelihood your assets could go to the state
  • you are in a domestic partnership

When do I not need a will?

If you have assets less than $50,000, then your estate need not go through the probate process. In this case, it may not be necessary to set out your assets in a will. If your wishes exactly match the law of intestacy, and you don’t have any minor children, and don’t care about who executes your estate,

What do I put in my will?

Seems like you’ll have to pull your hair out with sorting out bank statements and insurance policies, while the lawyer runs an expensive hourly bill.

At Goodwill, we want to remove all the stress and make it easy to create a will in minutes, and keep it updated throughout your life.

Step 1: About you

When you write your will, you’ll be asked some basic information that goes into your will such as your full name, address, marital status, children, pets

Step 2: Guardians for children

If you have children under 21 or pets, you’ll be able to appoint guardians here

Step 3: Distributing your wealth

You’ll have a chance to indicate who gets what percentage of your overall wealth between your family, friends, and social causes you care about.

We’ll ask for:

  • Your primary beneficiaries (for example, your spouse or partner)
  • Your secondary beneficiaries (children, parents, friends, others) if your primary beneficiaries pass away before you do.

Step 4: Choosing executors

Choosing someone you trust who is capable of navigating the legal and financial process if something happens to you is one of the most important parts of writing a will.

You can appoint a family, friend, or a professional in this section in minutes.

Optional step: Gifts

You may wish to give sums of money to the caretaker of your pet, or a beloved possession to your favourite niece or nephew. Here’s where you specify who gets what, along with a personal message to them.

You can leave:

  • A specified sum of money
  • An specific possession such as an heirloom ring, or automobile
  • A collection of items

You can leave these items to anyone you wish, because US laws allow for full testamentary freedom.

If you leave a gift or percentage of estate to a child under 21, it will be held by the guardian for safekeeping until they reach adulthood.

Optional step: Assets

This is a helpful list of your assets so your executor and family can locate them easily. You can add just the name of the institutions where you have accounts, or more information such as account number and current balance. This is not required or legally binding.

How do I make my will legally valid?

Goodwill ensures your will is written in accordance with the laws in the US.

But until your will is printed and signed properly (with two witnesses), it’s just a piece of paper.

After you create a will on Goodwill, you’ll be able to download your will. Check your Downloads folder for the file.

Print and bind you will

Three staples down the left side will do nicely

Choose two people to witness your signing

They must be over 21 and they cannot be a beneficiary in your will or their spouse. They must also be identified clearly in the will.

The Signing

Together, you and your witnesses all watching, sign the will.

According to the Wills Act in the US, your will is now legally valid.

Store your will

Store in a safe place at home, or somewhere accessible to your executor. Inform him/her of its location.

According to the Wills Act in the US, your will is fully legal:

Do I need to submit my will to the authorities?

  • after it is signed properly with two neutral witnesses
  • no need to notarise your will
  • no need to register your will

After signing, store in a safe place that your executor can access, and inform them.

Can I register my will?

It is not required but if you wish, you can register your will with the US Will Registry . The service only notes that you have a will, and does not store original or copies of your actual will.

How do I update my will?

Goodwill provides unlimited lifetime access. Simply login using your user name and password (or social login), make necessary changes, and re-download your will.

The remainder of your information is securely stored and accessible at any time

Why is Goodwill so much more affordable than going to a lawyer?

Our mission at Goodwill is to create an affordable and accessible will writing service that anyone can use. Using technology allows us to create efficiencies in how we serve our customers.

Goodwill was started by estate planning experts Priya Surya and Jonathan Summers-Muir, with support from Entrepreneur First, and SG Innovate, an effort to create a digital ecosystem in the US.

She previously worked with World Bank in Washington DC to bring technology to financial inclusion, and was head of New Market Growth in Asia for Bima Mobile, a company that makes insurance accessible to millions of emerging market consumers. Her interest in legal and financial planning stems from her own experience as a mother and daughter was the impetus behind starting Goodwill.

Jonathan is a web developer and graphic designer. He has led teams across a diverse range of data sensitive products from professional football software, door access security and data analytic aggregation software. He has a keen interest in making the complicated processes of estate planning into a straight forward simple process. He was born in the UK, and now calls the US home.

Can I have a will expert double check my will?

Yes, your will includes full post-sales support every day of the week. Click on the chat icon at the bottom of the screen to speak to us over chat or easily schedule a call.

After receiving your will, we advise you read it from top to bottom, and speak with us about any questions.

We can also refer a lawyer for thorny legal issues specific to your situation.

Should my spouse and I have a separate will or joint will?

Joint wills.

Joint wills are highly inflexible. Both partners must agree to make any changes. If one person passes away, it’s difficult for the other person to make changes.

Individual wills

With Individual wills, both partners create an account with their own email address and password.

Individual wills are as easy as mirror wills, and have the benefits without the draw backs.

The advantages are the following:

  • Flexible - you can make your will exactly like your partner’s or completely different, or anywhere in between. It is up to you.
  • Affordable - it’s even more pocket-friendly with our partner discount
  • Update anytime. No back and forth, just login, make your changes, and print your new ill.
  • Support from expert will writing team with any questions you may have

Get started here

Why would I want to update my will?

If you bought a new home, added a new family member, gotten married or divorced, if your pet passed away or if you have started investing in a new robo advisory investment account, you should update your will to reflect these changes.

Often our children may be more or less independent as they grow older, and one might need more help than another.

Change is the only constant. Don’t let an outdated will disturb your peace of mind.

Police stop writing tickets for minor offences in early retirement protest

From today, the police will stop issuing fines for minor violations in a protest demanding a decent early retirement scheme for cops. More far-reaching protest actions are not excluded, the police union ANPV said in a statement .

“Apparently, it takes a lot to convince employers and politicians that police work is hard work and that a decent early retirement scheme is, therefore, simply a sign of respect and appreciation,” the police union said.

From today, people caught committing a minor offense like public urination or cycling without lights will get only a warning, and a leaflet with information about the protest. Though the police officer may decide to issue a fine if the situation demands it. “It is always at the discretion of the officer on the spot.”

Negotiations for a new early retirement scheme will start today. The police unions plan to continue this no-fines protest until they reach a result. If this protest does not achieve the desired result, harsher action may follow, the union said.

Threats to school of Perth student who was shot by police dismissed as ‘hacking’

Police have no concerns for safety, Rossmoyne senior high school principal says, after messages on an internal service threatening to ‘shoot up the school’ were investigated

Fresh threats to “shoot up the school” attended by the teenager who was shot dead by police in Perth on the weekend have been dismissed as a hacking incident, with the school insisting there was no threat to students.

The 16-year-old was fatally shot by police in a car park in Willetton on Saturday night after he stabbed a stranger in the back. The teenager, a white convert to Islam, was known to police and had been in a deredicalisation program for two years.

On Tuesday morning, police were called to the school he attended – Rossmoyne senior high school – after a series of threatening messages were posted on an internal messaging service.

Redacted versions of the messages have circulated online: “All I’m saying is Allahu Ahkbar I will kill the [redacted] tomorrow”, one message said, appearing to have been posted by a student. Another message read: “I always planned to shoot up at the school and fuck all the [redacted] [redacted] you are all going to get punished for what you have said to me in school we will prevail”.

Rossmoyne’s principal, Alan Brown, emailed students and parents saying the messages were the result of a “hacking incident” and that there was no risk to students.

Sign up for Guardian Australia’s free morning and afternoon email newsletters for your daily news roundup

“Police do not have any concerns for the safety of the students, teachers, and the broader community, and WA police continue to work with the Department of Education to identify the source of the messages,” he wrote.

On Tuesday, in the aftermath of the boy’s killing, further details emerged of his deteriorating behaviour at school.

A short video circulating online shows the boy setting off a small improvised explosive in a school toilet two years ago. The footage shows him throwing the bomb into a toilet cubicle before being told to “get away” by another student, just before an explosion. The incident was investigated by police.

The WA premier, Roger Cook, confirmed a letter had previously been sent to the education department and to the Australian federal police about a group of allegedly radicalised teens at the school – including the slain student – that claimed they had tried to indoctrinate other students.

“The education department took that information on board and continued to manage that young man,” Cook said.

The premier said the boy appeared to have been radicalised online, and, as part of his deradicalisation program, was limited to a basic phone with no internet connection.

“As part of the countering violent extremism program, the individual in question only had a very basic telephone,” Cook said. “So when he came into contact with the … program there is a range of measures and I think that includes limiting his access to online media and social media.”

However, students at Rossmoyne have told reporters they had seen him watching extremist Islamist context in class on files kept on a USB.

“They were like Isis videos, I’m kind of uneducated on that subject, but something along the lines of like al-Qaeda groups and a lot of religious extremism,” the West Australian reported one student as saying.

“He wasn’t really like that, I think he kind of went down a bit of a rabbit hole … he definitely had some mental health issues.”

An online petition, which reportedly originated with a Rossmoyne parent and is addressed to the WA education minister, expresses “grave concern” over prayer rooms in the state’s public schools.

“We assert that the promotion and facilitation of religious practices within public schools create an environment that is divisive, exclusionary, and contrary to the principles of secular education,” the petition, launched on 29 April, states.

“This practice not only undermines the diverse fabric of our society but also violates the fundamental rights of students to receive an education free from religious influence.

“Moreover, the promotion of religious activities within public schools perpetuates societal divisions and contributes to the alienation and marginalisation of certain religious and cultural groups, thereby fostering religious radicalisation among impressionable students.”

On Tuesday, one signatory to the petition wrote in support of a closure of school prayer rooms, saying: “We don’t want what happened in Willetton to increase in frequency”.

A counter-petition, launched on Tuesday, urged the WA government to keep the prayer rooms in schools, pointing out that Islamic prayers are required at specific times throughout the day.

“These rooms are completely optional to use and don’t push their beliefs on others,” the petition argues. “Whether you believe in God or not, you should believe that everyone has the right to worship what they want”.

“The recent tragic event of the 16-year-old Perth boy attempting to become ‘jihad’ (sic) has left a horrible image on Islam and has tainted many people’s perceptions of this peaceful religion. A significant number of people have petitioned to close down prayer rooms in Perth, which is understandable due to circumstance but is also irrational and harmful to the broader community.”

Police investigations into Saturday night’s incident, at a Bunnings car park in Willetton in Perth’s southern suburbs, are continuing. The man who was stabbed – who was not known to the teenager – remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Wills and Estate Planning

police will writing service

With a little bit of planning now, you can make it easier (and hopefully less expensive) for your loved ones to sort out your affairs after your death. Not a nice thought, but it's good to get it all sorted out sooner rather than later.

Your action plan:

  • Write a Will if you don't already have one.
  • If you've got a Will, make sure it's up to date.
  • Review your Inheritance tax situation to see if you can reduce the amount to be paid from your estate when you die.

This job should be high on your list of priorities. Without a Will, the government decides how your estate should be distributed, with no regard for your wishes. This could mean friends, relatives and charities get nothing - even if you made promises during your lifetime.

It is possible to write your own Will, but it's not always advisable. It's easy to make mistakes, making it invalid. Using a Solicitor will ensure all the legal formalities are followed and they will be able to help ensure your Will is as tax-efficient as possible.

If you need help finding a solicitor in your area, then   visit the  law society website .

Before you see a solicitor it could save you some time if you can answer the following questions:

  • What do I own?
  • What do I owe?
  • Who gets what?
  • Is there anyone who depends on me that may question my wishes?
  • Do I need to choose guardians for my children (under 18 years)?
  • Do I have any other wishes such as organ donation or funeral arrangements?
  • Who do I want to be my executors?

You should review your Will every five years and if:

  • You get divorced.
  • Your partner dies.
  • Your children have children of their own.
  • You move house.
  • You experience any other big changes in your life.

Whatever your circumstances, you should make a Will. It is essential for making sure your estate goes to where you want it to. If you have unusual circumstances or special requests, the law may not always recognise them, so it's important you discuss them with your solicitor.

Not the most exciting to think about, but with a little bit of planning now, you could maximise the amount of inheritance you leave for your loved ones and reduce the Inheritance tax they may have to pay to receive it.

Inheritance tax (IHT) is tax paid after you die if the total of your estate exceeds a certain threshold. It is also sometimes payable on gifts you made to others during your lifetime. The current IHT threshold is changeable with budget announcements. Check the   current IHT amounts   on the   HM Revenue & Customs website.

The things that can count towards your state for IHT purposes, includes the following minus any debts or liabilities:

  • Your home and other property.
  • Savings and investments.
  • Insurance and pension policies.
  • Payments from a pension plan or employee death benefit (unless written in trust).
  • Other assets like cars, art, jewellery, furniture etc.
  • Gifts you have made but still benefit from eg. a house you have given away but still live in.
  • Certain gifts you have made in the last seven years.
  • Assets held in trust from which you receive a personal benefit.
  • Your share of any assets held jointly.

Reducing the IHT payable on your estate

For some, this tax could be more than they've ever had to pay in their lives. And it doesn't just apply to your home. It's applies to many assets, including your savings and investments.

So what can you do to ease the tax burden on those you leave behind?

  • Make a Will - a solicitor will be able to help you make yours as tax-efficient as possible.
  • Look into exemptions - for example how moving assets between spouses/civil partners or leaving money to charity could help.
  • Use your gift allowances - if you can afford to give away some of your assets, you may want to consider doing this within the amounts allowed. Go to the GOV.UK website to find out more about the   current gift allowances .
  • Consider using financial planning tools like life assurance and trusts to reduce your IHT liability.

Security guard shot at Drake's Toronto home, police say

police will writing service

Drake's Toronto home was taped off after a shooting Tuesday morning, police say.

The shooting took place outside Drake 's house around 2 a.m. and Toronto Police Service officers found a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound when they arrived at the scene, according to Inspector Paul Krawczyk of the Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force at the Toronto Police Service.

The victim was a security guard who was standing outside the gates. He was transported to the hospital with serious injuries and a suspect fled the scene in a vehicle, according to police.

Police confirmed to City News in Canada that Drake was not the person injured but would not confirm if he was home at the time of the shooting on Tuesday.

More: Drake says he'd be arrested if he committed sexual assault. Statistically that's not true.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Reps for Drake did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment.

Police did not immediately release a description of the suspect nor the vehicle. The incident in the "One Dance" rapper's neighborhood comes as the 37-year-old has been making headlines for a highly contentious, weekslong feud with rap genre peer, Kendrick Lamar , which has featured numerous diss tracks.

Drake, Kendrick Lamar diss tracks escalate with 'Meet the Grahams' and 'Family Matters'

The Canadian rapper's feud with the Pulitzer Prize-winning Compton lyricist has spurred a series of public accusations from secret children to sexual assault.

In his diss tracks, Lamar claimed Drake has a secret daughter, gambling and drug addictions, that he has predators on his label's payroll, and should be in a "cell" with  Harvey Weinstein while Drake alleged that Lamar physically abused his fiancée, that Lamar's child might not be his and that the California rapper is living a double life full of infidelity.

Drake's house is also a notable centerpiece within the topic of discussion between the two rappers. His opulent property is well-known among his fans and the mega-mansion is featured on the cover of Lamar's "Not Like Us," one of many diss tracks aimed at Drake where he suggests that sex offenders live there.

Drug dealer fled police in 'extremely dangerous' car chase which ended at Manchester Airport

Footage of the pursuit showed Neil Corrigan throwing a large package out of the window of a van before weaving through traffic at a high speed along the motorway.

A drug dealer who led police in a car chase while carrying nearly £300,000 worth of heroin has been jailed.

Neil Corrigan was sentenced to five years in prison for supplying class A drugs, dangerous driving, failing to stop and driving without insurance.

The 42-year-old from Cayton, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, was also banned from driving for five years and four months.

Chester Crown Court heard how officers had attempted to stop Corrigan as he drove a white Mercedes van down the M56 near Warrington on 5 March.

Footage of the pursuit showed Corrigan throwing a large package out of the window of the van before weaving through traffic at high speed along the motorway and continuing to the A555 towards Manchester Airport.

The pursuit continued on foot after Corrigan drove through a barrier near the entrance of a multi-storey car park at the airport.

He was arrested close to the Radisson Blue Hotel.

Two brown packages, each containing 1kg of heroin, were recovered from the M56. Another two bags had broken and the substance had spilled out on the road.

A police drugs expert estimated that the 2kg of heroin had a street value of £142,850, meaning it was likely Corrigan was transporting more than £285,000 worth of illegal drugs in total.

Chief Inspector John Forshaw said: "The manner of Corrigan's driving was extremely dangerous, showing no regard for the safety of innocent members of the public as part of his failed attempt to flee officers."

What are People Saying about Our Training?

“I have taken a few general grant writing courses in the past, but this one is the best one so far as it’s specific to law enforcement. The grant writing toolkit provided is a valuable resources and super helpful. The instructor was very knowledgeable on the topic. Although I do have grant writing experience, I still came out of this session with additional tools to help myself and my agency.”

Jessica Medina, Peoria (AZ) Police Department

“Amazing course. Evan is highly knowledgeable about writing grants, and explains everything in a manner that anyone can understand. Would recommend this course to anyone interested in getting started with grant funding.”

Jordon Hurd, Middlesboro (KY) Police Department

“I definitely don’t feel so lost going into this. I had no idea what I was doing when I applied for the COPS hiring grant earlier this year and I wish I had this training prior to that! Your presentation was well laid out and practical and the grant writing toolkit will be very useful. If you ever decide to do an advanced type class, I could definitely be interested in learning all that I can.”

Patricia Summey, Bristol (TN) Police Department

“This class was wonderful and so full of useful information. I really appreciated that you showed us actual examples of previous grants and went through them in detail highlighting the areas that can really make or break a submission. That was so helpful, along with the idea to cite outside resources. I never thought to do that.”

Christine Booker, Menifee (CA) Police Department

“The course provided detailed information relevant to grant writing. The instructor provided a detailed toolkit that will be helpful for grants that I may apply to in the future. The instructor also provided insight on finding grants. This is not your average course. Instructor maintained attention well and did not deliver materials in a robotic fashion.”

Phot of Dr. Evan Sorg working with Commissioner Kevin Bethel of the Philadelphia Police Department. Office setting with diplomas on the wall. Papers and an IPad sit on the table.

Practical experience meeting academic expertise.

It is highly unlikely that the average grant writer will be familiar with police organizations, operations, or procedures. Further, they likely have no experience with police data, how to analyze it, and how to properly present it in a grant application. Some may never have even interacted with law enforcement before.

Police Grant Writing knows your world. Crime and Public Safety

Crime and public safety | memorial service honors 55 oakland police officers killed in the line of duty, more than 250 relatives, friends, past and currrent officers and others attended the ceremony at police headquarters wednesday.

Randy Wingate, father of Officer Jordan Wingate, with his grandson Jordan Wingate, 4, pin a flower on a display during an annual memorial at the Oakland Police Department for police officers killed in the line of duty in Oakland, Calif., on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. To the left is officer Sydney Kofford. Wingate, 28, died April 20, 2024 from injuries suffered in a police vehicle crash in Aug. of 2018. (Jane Tyska/Bay Area News Group)

They were Officer Tuan Le , 36, fatally shot Dec. 29, 2023 while responding to a burglary call, and Officer Jordan Wingate , 28, who died April 20, 2024 from injuries suffered in a police vehicle crash in August of 2018. The two officers had the largest contingents of family and friends present.

Acting Chief of Police Tony Jones called all of the officers killed “fallen heroes,” adding: “There are things in life that cannot be taught or trained into a person. One of those elements is courage. It takes courage to be a police officer. It takes even more courage to be a police officer here in Oakland. The officers we are here to remember today were born with that courage.”

Jones said that police officers know what the dangers are in their job and that many in Oakland have had close calls with death.

“Those who don’t make it are the real heroes,” he said. “The heroes who risk it all so that the people who cannot protect themselves can be safe. Those are the heroes that we are here to honor today.”

The ceremony was also attended by incoming Oakland police chief Floyd Mitchell, who is expected to be sworn in next week, and Mayor Sheng Thao.

Deputy Chief of Police James Beere said the 55 who died were people with “backgrounds and stories as diverse as Oakland itself and who are forever bound by an unbreakable bond of valor.”

He said the law enforcement profession “is an unfair profession” with extremely high expectations, constant criticism where praise does not often happen.

“That is why their ultimate sacrifice means so much,” he said of the 55. They served and sacrificed for a purpose far greater than themselves. I can think of no truer definition of a hero.”

” ]Beere told the audience “there is no speech or ceremony that can ease your pain, no tribute or salute. But today we join together to honor their courage and to fill your hearts with our gratitude for the lives they led and know they will live on, not just in your hearts, but in the hearts of every Oakland police officer who continues to serve for generations to come.”

As in past ceremonies, the name of each of the officers was read out loud and relatives or a friend present pinned a rose in their honor to a floral display of a police badge.

Encrypted services Apple, Proton and Wire helped Spanish police identify activist

Students protest in Barcelona, Spain, on 17 October 2019 demanding the Freedom of jailed separatist leaders. Thousands of students have taken to the streets to publish their outrage with the ruling of the Superior Court towards the independence leaders. (NurPhoto / Contributor/Getty Images)

As part of an investigation into people involved in the pro-independence movement in Catalonia, the Spanish police obtained information from the encrypted services Wire and Proton, which helped the authorities identify a pseudonymous activist, according to court documents obtained by TechCrunch.

Earlier this year, the Spanish police Guardia Civil sent legal requests through Swiss police to Wire and Proton, which are both based in Switzerland. The Guardia Civil requested any identifying information related to accounts on the two companies’ respective platforms. Wire responded providing the email address used to register the Wire account, which was a Protonmail address. Proton responded providing the recovery email for that Protonmail account, which was an iCloud email address, according to the documents.

In the request, which listed “organised crime” and “terrorism” as the nature of the investigation, Spanish police wrote that it wanted to “find out who were the perpetrators of the facts taking place in the street riots in Catalonia in 2019.”

Once the Guardia Civil obtained the iCloud email address, the documents show that it requested information from Apple, which in turn provided a full name, two home addresses and a linked Gmail account.

TechCrunch is not revealing the alleged full name of the activist, given that it is unclear if that person is really behind these activities, nor that they have committed any crimes.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment.

Encrypted online services typically aim to reduce the amount of user data they can access by encrypting it with keys that only the user has, effectively preventing the companies from handing over user data subject to a court order. Police instead tap companies for their metadata, such as identifiable information about the user, including email addresses.

Spokespeople from Wire and Proton confirmed to TechCrunch that they received legal requests from the Swiss police, and that they complied with the requests.

“Upon a formally correct request by the Swiss authorities, Wire provided basic account information about a user. Wire is not able to see or disclose the content of any data transmitted over its service,” Wire spokesperson Hauke Gierow told TechCrunch in an email.

Proton spokesperson Edward Shone told TechCrunch that, “Proton has minimal user information, as illustrated by the fact that in this case it was data obtained from Apple that was allegedly used to identify the terrorism suspect.”

“Proton does not require a recovery address, but in this case the terror suspect added one on their own. We cannot encrypt this data as we need to be able to send an email to that address if the terror suspect wishes to initiate the recovery process,” said Proton’s spokesperson in the email. “This information can in theory be requested by Swiss authorities in cases of terrorism, and this determination is generally made by the Swiss Federal Office of Justice. Proton provides privacy by default and not anonymity by default because anonymity requires certain user actions to ensure proper [operational security] such as not adding your Apple account as an optional recovery method, which it appears was done by the alleged terror suspect.”

Neither the Guardia Civil, nor the Spanish court where the case is being investigated, responded to TechCrunch’s requests for comment. A spokesperson for the Swiss Federal Police said that it is “not allowed to share any details about possible ongoing investigations and information exchange with our partners.”

The legal requests sent to Wire, Proton and Apple are related to a case where Spanish authorities believe that a pseudonymous member of the Catalan pro-independence movement Tsunami Democratic was helping the group plan some kind of actions or demonstrations at the time when King Felipe VI was planning to visit the region in 2020.

“Explain what you want to do and I will tell you whether it’s worth it or you will waste time like at the Camp Nou,” the activist, who goes by Xuxu Rondinaire, told another activist in a chat on Wire, which is included in the court documents.

According to the Spanish authorities, Xuxu Rondinaire was referring to a botched protest involving drones that was supposed to happen during the 2019 soccer game between F.C. Barcelona, whose stadium is called Camp Nou, and Real Madrid.

According to the court documents, in those Wire chats, Xuxu Rondinaire “explained in detail” several elements of the potential security protocols of “a public figure,” clearly referring to King Felipe VI.

The case of Xuxu Rodinaire was previously reported by Spanish and Catalan media.

Catalan newspaper El Nacional reported on April 23 that the Spanish authorities believe Xuxu Rondinaire is an officer of the Catalan police Mossos d’Esquadra.

A spokesperson for Mossos d’Esquadra told TechCrunch that it has no information about the case and referred questions to the Guardia Civil and the relevant Spanish court.

TechCrunch reached out to Xuxu Rondinaire via Wire, via their Protonmail email address and their iCloud email address, but received no response. We also reached out to a cell phone number listed in the court documents as being linked to the home address where Xuxu Rondinaire allegedly lives, which was provided by Apple to the Spanish police.

When TechCrunch reached out to the cell phone number and asked whether the user behind it was the person with the full name identified in the court documents, the person responded “no,” and added they would report the message as spam.

The Rev. Al Sharpton calls for justice in eulogy for Ohio man who died last month in police custody

The Rev. Al Sharpton and family members of an Ohio man who died in police custody told mourners at his funeral that they and the community must fight to see that he gets justice. Sharpton gave the eulogy for Frank Tyson during the funeral Wednesday.

The Rev. Al Sharpton and family members of an Ohio man who died in police custody told mourners at his funeral on Wednesday that they and the community must fight to see that he gets justice.

Sharpton gave the eulogy for Frank Tyson, a 53-year-old East Canton resident, during the service at the Hear The Word Ministries church in Canton. Tyson died April 18 after he was handcuffed and left facedown on the floor of a social club while telling officers he couldn’t breathe.

“You can’t give us Frank back, but you can do justice for this family,” Sharpton said. “This is an assault on all us ... stand up for the Franks of this word, because if they can get away with what they did to Frank, they’ll do it to you.”

Tyson’s longtime partner, Sabrina Jones, noted that Tyson had been in prison for many years and was released less than two weeks before he died. She and members of his family had worked over the years on efforts to exonerate Tyson, who had long maintained his innocence.

“We only had 13 days with him (after his release) before they took his life away,” Jones said during the service, struggling to keep her composure at times. “It’s hard, this is hard. I want justice for Frank.”

Bodycam video released by police shows Tyson resisted while being handcuffed and said repeatedly, “They’re trying to kill me” and “Call the sheriff,” as he was taken to the floor.

Tyson, who was Black, was taken into custody shortly after a vehicle crash that had severed a utility pole. Police body-camera footage showed that after a passing motorist directed officers to the bar, a woman opened the door and said: “Please get him out of here, now.”

Police restrained Tyson — including with a knee on his back — and he immediately told officers he could not breathe. A recent Associated Press investigation found those words — “I can’t breathe” — had been disregarded in other cases of deaths in police custody.

Officers told Tyson he was fine, to calm down and to stop fighting as he was handcuffed facedown with his legs crossed on the carpeted floor. Police were joking with bystanders and leafing through Tyson’s wallet before realizing he was in a medical crisis.

Five minutes after the body-camera footage recorded Tyson saying “I can’t breathe,” one officer asked another if Tyson had calmed down. The other replied, “He might be out.”

The two Canton officers involved, who are white, have been placed on paid administrative leave.

Tyson was released from state prison on April 6 after serving 24 years on a kidnapping and theft case and was almost immediately declared a post-release control supervision violator for failing to report to a parole officer, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

The Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation said in a statement last month that its probe will not determine if force was justified and that the prosecuting attorney or a grand jury will decide if charges related to the use of force are warranted.

US service member shot and killed by Florida police identified by the Air Force

The U.S. Air Force says a 23-year-old airman supporting its Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, Florida, was shot and killed during an incident involving the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. — The U.S. Air Force said an airman based at the Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, Florida, was shot and killed Friday during an incident involving a sheriff’s deputy.

Senior Airman Roger Fortson, 23, died at his off-base residence, the U.S. Air Force said in a statement released Monday.

A deputy responding to the call of a disturbance in progress “reacted in self-defense after he encountered a 23-year-old man armed with a gun,” the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Friday.

Fortson was taken to a hospital where he died, officials said. The deputy involved was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the incident.

Fortson was assigned to the 4th Special Operations Squadron as a special missions aviator, where one of his roles as a member of the squadron’s AC-130J Ghostrider aircrew was to load the gunship’s 30mm and 105mm cannons during missions.

In a statement late Tuesday, Okaloosa County Sheriff Eric Aden said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the incident and the State Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review. He said the sheriff’s office was “saddened” by the shooting.

The Air Force’s 1st Special Operations Wing said its priorities are “providing casualty affairs service to the family, supporting the squadron during this tragic time, and ensuring resources are available for all who are impacted.”

Frisaro reported from Fort Lauderdale.

Moscow warehouse raid leads to dozens detained, checked for military service

I n the Moscow region, police and the Russian Guard raided a Wildberries warehouse in Elektrostal. Several individuals were detained and transported to the military registration and enlistment office.

Employees shared videos from the scene on the Elektrostal Wildberries company's internal channel. The warehouse employs thousands of migrants, and the Russian National Guard is verifying their work permits , residence permits, and military IDs.

Dozens detained

"Those lacking the necessary documents are placed into prison vans and taken to the military registration and enlistment office," reports Baza, noting that approximately 20 individuals were detained.

The Astra channel reports that police used sticks to subdue resisting workers.

"They are identifying individuals eligible for military service and those evading it. Those evading are taken away without consent. Resisters face police baton charges," said warehouse workers to Astra.

Authorities previously stated that efforts to "enhance control over the migrant influx" were expected to intensify, especially following an attack on Crocus City Hall.

According to Mash channel, 15 people were arrested during the raid; Astra reports that "dozens" were detained. In total, at least 5,000 workers underwent checks.

"Screenings of foreign nationals working in Russia and instances of aggressive xenophobia have increased following the terrorist attack on Crocus City Hall, attributed to citizens of Tajikistan," reports Deutsche Welle.

Security force raids at migrant gathering spots may prompt employers to strengthen employment conditions. The likelihood of conscripting these individuals for military service is diminishing—suspect persons are more likely to be deported, implying the Russian army won't expand using their contributions. The 'special operation' is also expected to change, according to the Brief channel.
