Call for applications Appointed by Rectoral Decree n. 709/2023 Prot. n. 149534 of 02/06/2023

The PhD in Management offers to students a broad and inter-disciplinary education in the fields of business and finance studies and management research. It provides candidates with strong theoretical foundations in social science disciplines and a deep knowledge of research methods applied to management, accounting, banking and financial problems. It offers specialisations in two major areas: General management and Accounting, Banking & Finance . Doctoral students are expected to have full-time status, attend core and elective courses, participate in research projects conducted by faculty members, present their works at international conferences, and publish in international journals. The program offers the  opportunity to acquire knowledge and advanced research methodologies in the scientific areas described before. It requires the production of an original research contribution. PhD students acquire competencies that can be used both in the academic and business sectors.

During their first year, students of both tracks attend two compulsory courses: Research methods and Econometrics. The compulsory courses for first-year candidates in Management are: Introduction to statistics, Strategic management, Quantitative Res. Methods, Consumer Behavior, Organizational Behavior, Qualitative methods, and Economics of Innovation. The compulsory courses for candidates in Accounting, Banking & Finance are: Microeconomics and 3 courses among: Accounting, Seminars in Corporate Finance 1 and 2, Seminars in Banking, Intertemporal Asset Pricing, Corporate Governance, and Behavioral Economics. During the second year, candidates in Management attend 3 courses among: Arts, History and Management, Consumer Behavior/Marketing Strategy, Technology Entrepreneurship and Research in Strategic Operations. Candidates in Accounting, Banking & Finance must attend 2 compulsory courses: Econometrics 3 and Advanced Micro Panel Models, and 2 courses from the list of courses described in the first year. In addition, all candidates take the seminar "The Art of Managing the Peer Review Process". During the second year, the students attend two types of "lunch seminars" (at least 22 compulsory). The first type is called "My cup of tea". During these seminars, one member of the Faculty of the Department meets all the PhD students to present his/her research field. The second type is the "research seminars" featuring international scholars that give a talk on their research. Finally, students, in collaboration with Bologna Business School, participate in the training on writing case studies and, guided by a professor of the school, draft a case study. Over the last years, the course offering in the various areas characterising the doctorate has been enhanced by involving 6 renowned professors affiliated with London School of Economics (UK), Trinity College Dublin (IE), Syracuse University (USA), Cass Business School (UK), Michigan Ross (USA) and Grenoble (FR).

During the first three semesters PhD candidates learn the analytical tools for theoretical and empirical research in various sectors of economics and management. They will also attend summer schools and methodological seminars at the Department, other research centers of the University of Bologna or other universities. All the courses require the preparation of research notes. At the end of the first year research all candidates prepare a research paper under the supervision of a faculty. During the third semester of the II year candidates prepare their thesis proposal which is presented at a department seminar. The thesis will be supervised by one main advisor. All PhD students normally are involved in research projects carried out by the Department and have to joint the 'lunch seminar' organized monthly by the Department. The University takes care of delivering basic courses (students are invited to attend) on 'research management and how to participate to EU projects and being aware of other research collaborations opportunities', 'Intellectual Property Management' and 'Entrepreneurship'. On top of basic courses, more advanced courses on these topics can be attended. The PhD coordinator suggests attendance to specific events (conferences, workshops, schools), based on the research projects of individual students.

The entire PhD program is thought in english. Specifically:

  • all courses are held in English;
  • our students are immersed in an international research environment, wherein several seminars, summer schools and workshops are organized with the participation of internationally renowned scholars;
  • the calls for applications are regularly published on the websites of international associations and job market platforms specialized in management and economics (e.g., INOMICS, EIASM, SSRN, AKADEUS, Academy of Management);
  • over the last 10 years (cycles 29-38), our program has attracted 22 international students (corresponding to the 36% of the enrolled ones) from various countries including: Brazil; Russia; Turkey; Serbia; Ukraine; Albania; Indonesia; China; Romania; Lithuania; Pakistan; India; Iran; Tunisia; Iceland; Nigeria; Philippines; Portugal;
  • various foreign PhD students have also spent research periods at our Department (e.g., from Brasil, China, Germany, Spain and Norway) or have attended our PhD under international mobility programs (e.g., Alban, Erasmus Mundus, World Bank).

Presentation of papers to national and international workshops, conferences and seminars during the PhD studies and submission of articles for publication in  (mostly international) scientific journals during the PhD studies and immediately after graduation. Final thesis in the form of a monograph or a collection of three papers.

Experts at Fairfield Dolan: Faculty Research Highlights

Senior Associate Dean, Anca Micu, PhD.

Senior Associate Dean, Anca Micu, PhD.

Featuring research showcased in prestigious publications such as the Journal of Education Advancement & Marketing , Research Policy , Journal of Portfolio Management , and more.

  • Anca Micu, PhD, senior associate dean, published her research paper, “Fostering Effective Collaboration between Faculty and Marketing Staff for Institutional Success,” in the Journal of Education Advancement & Marketing .

Faculty and staff collaboration is increasingly important for higher education institutional success. Creating an environment of cooperation with faculty–staff cross-silo dialogue with mission-driven, clearly communicated and measurable strategic goals, where staff have a clear vertical structure of responsibilities and perceive faculty being incentivized to work with them, and faculty have a thorough understanding of the beneficial outcomes of their collaboration with staff.

  • Winner of the Fairfield Dolan 2024 Outstanding Research Paper Award: Stanislav Vavilov, PhD, assistant professor of management, had the research paper "Global development agenda meets local opportunities: The rise of development-focused entrepreneurship support" co-authored with Stephen Manning and published in Research Policy .

Emerging economies provide abundant opportunities for entrepreneurship with social impact, but they often lack the resources to support it. This dilemma has led to the emergence of “development-focused entrepreneurship support” (DFES), which is typically provided by development organizations in the Global North, and which targets impact-oriented entrepreneurs operating in the Global South. This study examines, based on rich qualitative data from the U.S., Rwanda and Uganda, how international DFES organizations (iDFESOs) support entrepreneurs.

  • Philip Maymin, PhD, associate professor of analytics, co-authored the research paper " Fairy Tails: Lessons from 150 Years of Drawdowns" published in The Journal of Portfolio Management . Co-authored by Ashwin Alankar, Daniel Ding, Allan Maymin and Myron Scholes.

The authors identify, examine, and categorize the largest downside tail events in the US equity market over the past 150 years using monthly data. They define a downside tail event as any peak-to-trough loss of at least 15%. Using Gaussian mixture models to cluster the tail events based on predrawdown observables, five distinct environments emerge: hiking, easing, disinflationary, inflationary, and exuberance.

  • Lin Lu , PhD, assistant professor of analytics, co-authored the research paper "Measuring Service Quality with Text Analytics: Considering both Importance and Performance of Consumer Opinions on Social and Non-Social Online Platforms" published in Journal of Business Research . Co-authored by Pei Xu, Yen-Yao Wang and Yu Wang.

Online word-of-mouth (WOM) has attracted considerable attention from researchers due to its abundant information on customer perceptions that drive product and service improvement. This study develops a novel weighted service quality (WSQ) metric derived from online customer opinions, leveraging the importance-performance analysis framework. Data collected from social and non-social online platforms confirms that this WSQ approach outperforms the widely used average sentiment score approach and significantly predicts the industry service quality standard, Airline Quality Rating (AQR).

Additional faculty research highlights:

  • Gregory Koutmos, PhD, Gerald M. Levin professor of finance had the research paper “Modeling the Time Variation in Factor Exposures”, co-authored with Knif, Kolari and Pynomen, published in the Journal of Finance and Investment Analysis .
  • Rajasree Rajamma, PhD along with Audhesh Paswan, Qin Sun & Retno Tanding Suryandari published an article, “Motivational Intricacies behind volunteerism?” in the Journal of Marketing Theory & Practice.
  • Valeria Martinez, PhD, associate professor of finance, had her research paper: “Explaining First Day Returns Using Spac Board Member Characteristics,” recently published in the journal Empirical Economic Letters.
  • Philip Maymin, PhD, associate professor of analytics and the MSBA program director, had his co-authored paper “Private vehicle drivers’ acceptance of autonomous vehicles: The role of trait mindfulness” published in Transport Policy . This paper was co-authored with Jinping Guan, Xinyu Du, Jiayue Zhang, Emma Desoto, Ellen Langer, and Zhengbing He.
  • Christopher Huntley, PhD, associate professor of analytics and director of the Entrepreneurship Center, and Philip Maymin, PhD, associate professor of analytics and MSBA program director, were interviewed by the Hartford Business Journal for the article, “Colleges expand business analytics, data science programs to meet industry demand.”

At this point, I’d now like to turn the call over to Joseph Visconti.

Joseph Visconti: Thank you, Rob. Good morning. I want to welcome everyone to the call today. Thank you for taking the time out of your schedules. My name is Joseph Visconti, I’m the Executive Chairman and Interim CEO of Forza X1. With me today is also Forza’s new Interim CFO, Mike Dickerson. During this call, I will update you on recent company developments and discuss Forza’s current operations. As I alluded to during our year-end call in March, electric boat sales continue to be relatively small in comparison to boats with traditional outboard combustion motors. Across the board, the marine industry is seeing lower demand for recreational vehicles, influenced heavily by economic uncertainties and shifting consumer priorities.

We have observed a noticeable market slowdown for the enthusiasm and general demand for electric boats, mirroring the broader trend we are witnessing in the National Electric Vehicle Sector. A data tracking company named SSI that tracks all boat registrations in the United States indicates that only 200 electric boats were sold in all of 2023, with a staggering 90% of them being a small horsepower electric boat primarily concentrated in California. The consensus was that electric marine vehicles would be adopted at a much faster rate than we were experiencing. Additionally, we’ve seen large motor manufacturers like Yamaha and Mercury enter the marine EV space with Suzuki likely to follow, these global engine manufacturers have likely committed significant R&D expenses to develop their own electric motors and competing head-to-head against Mercury, Yamaha and Suzuki will be extremely difficult.

Q&A Session

Follow forza x1 inc..

In response to these market dynamics, we have decided to slow down the pace of testing and production as we assess the future of the company. During this ongoing assessment, we are tightening the company’s financial belt by reducing Forza’s cash outlay. So far, Forza’s burn rate has been significantly reduced from last year’s trailing $600,000 a month to our Q1 burn approximately $230,000 per month with a target to reach less than $150,000 per month as we exit Q2 of 2024. By reducing our cash burn is necessary important step as we evaluate the challenges we face from current low demand for marine EV products and the slowdown of recreational marine industry as a whole. Even though we are pulling in the reins on the company spending, we continue to perform limited, but very focused testing on what we believe to be the final beta iteration of our FX1 140 horsepower outboard motor.

Our team is exploring and open to all available options and opportunities with regard to our electric motor and our technologies. Additionally, we are continuing with our investment in the construction of our Forza 60,000 square foot facility on our 11 acre property located in Marion, North Carolina. Construction of the plant is going well. The exterior walls are currently being assembled with the roof to follow. The obvious question is why continue the construction of the North Carolina factory with current market conditions? And the answer is, while financial and contractual commitments on the building were made over a year ago and it would cost more to exit. We believe that completing the building would allow us to realize a better value for our shareholders than an unfinished building.

Looking ahead, we are actively seeking strategic alternatives to leverage the technology we have developed over the past couple of years in a way that maximizes shareholder value with minimal financial risk. For example, we are exploring joint ventures with companies that have complementary technologies or market access. We are looking to align ourselves more closely with other players in the recreation of marine industry, these relationships would allow us to confine resources, share risks and capitalize on joint capabilities to develop new products or enter the markets more efficiently and integrate our electric propulsion system into a broader range of marine vehicles, enhancing our market reach. Additionally, we’re always seeking to collaborate with technology firms, particularly those specializing in battery technology and propulsion systems.

A successful collaboration can enhance our product offerings, efficiencies and performance, while sharing the development cost and risks. The Forza team’s current priority is to find the best way forward through prospective opportunities and set the stage for Forza’s future growth and success as a company. In the meantime, we are actively adjusting our business to minimize cash burn, pushing our final beta product forward responsibly and working towards completing the Marion facility. I want to thank you for attending today, and I’ll now open the floor to any questions you may have.

Joseph Visconti: Thank you, everybody. And again, I want to thank our shareholders, our stakeholders, our employees, and we will continue to update everybody through press releases and quarterly calls. Thank you again.

Operator: This concludes today’s conference. You may disconnect your lines at this time. And we thank you for your participation.
