The program is set to meet the needs of local and international healthcare settings for nurses with advanced degrees in the science of nursing.

Relevant subject benchmark statements and other external and internal

Ched cmo 15 s 2019, aacn’s the essentials: core competencies for professional nursing education, national nursing core competency standards, msn program of study, educational philosophy.

The University clearly articulates the kind of education that it envisions for its students in its mission statement, which reads: To offer accessible quality education that transforms students into persons of conscience, competence, and compassion, all for the glory of God . This mission statement is the enduring declaration of purpose and guiding premise in the University’s concept of good teaching.

To ensure the achievement of good teaching, the University embraces the constructivist paradigm in teaching and learning. Each Angelite student is actively involved in the process of constructing meaning and knowledge in their academic disciplines. The University gives preeminent value to the development of students’ active constructive process in learning.  This is realized through the practice of teaching that supports the constructive processing of understanding rather than the mere delivery of the information to students.  All these underscore the University’s commitment to place the best interests of students at the topmost spot in the hierarchy of its priorities.  As the HAU Quality Policy proclaims with resounding clarity: We are all about students .

The School of Nursing and Allied Medical Sciences as the component degree-granting unit operationalizes the University’s constructivist educational philosophy. Furthermore, its constructivist teaching is designed within the purview of outcomes-based education (OBE). The School has consciously focused and organized its program of instruction around the clearly defined outcomes that the students must be able to perform and demonstrate. The clarity of focus is manifested in the constructive alignment between and among learning outcomes, teaching-learning activities, and assessment tasks. Constructive alignment is a process and an outcome goal that is continuously quality assured.

Teaching-learning principles and approaches.

The School actualizes OBE with its outcomes-based teaching and learning (OBTL) at the class level. In OBTL, academic staff frame their instruction in a fashion where the outcomes determine the instructional content, the teaching methods and strategies, and the assessment process. They make OBTL apparent in their observance of the following teaching and learning principles:

Teaching Principles

  • Teaching involves getting relevant information about students to guide the design of instruction.
  • Teaching involves expressing clear expectations about how learning takes place.
  • Teaching involves focusing on the essential knowledge and skills.
  • Teaching involves recognizing and overcoming expert blind spot.
  • Teaching involves adopting appropriate teaching roles to support student learning.
  • Teaching involves continuous improving of learning plans based on feedback and reflection.

Learning Principles

  • Students’ prior knowledge can help or hinder learning.
  • Students’ ways of organizing knowledge influence how they learn and apply what they know.
  • Students’ motivation determines, directs, and sustains what they do to learn.
  • Students develop mastery by acquiring knowledge and skills, practicing integration, and knowing when to apply what they have learned.
  • Students’ quality of learning is enhanced by goal-directed practice and targeted feedback.
  • Students’ developmental level interacts with the social, emotional, and intellectual climate of the course to impact learning.
  • Students must know how to monitor and adjust their approaches to learning to become self-directed learners.

The teaching and learning in the program happen both at the conceptual/theoretical and practical levels. Academic staff teach students in lecture courses in either classroom-based on online mode. They design learning plans that reflect teaching-learning activities that promote active learning by making the students do the work. They use several student-centered teaching strategies that do away with them as constant source of information. The practical instruction, on the other hand, is done by providing students with structured clinical learning experience that is anchored on program outcomes.

Assessment and Evaluation

The School bases its practice with the three central purposes of assessment:

  • Assessment as learning – students reflect on and monitor their progress based on the feedback of the academic staff (i.e., student-centered formative assessment); and
  • Assessment for learning – academic staff use inferences about student progress to inform their teaching (i.e., teacher-centered formative assessment); and
  • Assessment of learning – academic staff use evidence of learning to appraise student achievement of outcome, goals, and standards (i.e., summative assessment).

Program Quality Assurance

The program conforms to Holy Angel University’s pursuit for academic excellence, hence its administrators shall continuously strive to do better. To achieve this, the programs is subjected to accreditation and ISO certification.

Aside from institutional quality assurance initiatives, parallel program-based initiatives are carried out. The Graduate Program Coordinator facilitates the annual program audit in terms of learning plans updating, outcomes evaluation, and collegial instructional supervision. The Program Advisory Council, which serves to provide the School with inputs from stakeholders, will be regularly convened for the purpose of program improvement.

All these program and institutional level initiatives are anchored on the University’s Quality Policy, to wit:

We all about our students!

Holy Angel University is committed to the holistic development of students through education, research, extension, and administrative services that conform to global standards of quality, comply with local and international statutory and regulatory requirements, and abide by the University’s Catholic foundation.

The University’s senior management regularly reviews and validates all programs, services, and processes for the improvement of its quality management system. This quality management system shall be communicated, implemented, and supported by the entire organization and other interested parties.

The MSN program was first offered by the HAU Graduate School of Nursing in 2011. The University submitted the program to quality assessment which received candidate status from the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities-Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) in 2014. After a successful validation visit, PACUCOA granted Level I accredited status to the program in 2017. In that year, the Graduate School of Nursing was also functionally integrated with the College of Nursing and Allied Medical Sciences, thereby transferring program administration to the latter.

GUIDELINES ON THE MASTER’S WRITTEN COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION

The written comprehensive examination (WCE) is a demonstration of the student’s culmination of their learning in the master’s program. It also provides a more comprehensive evaluation of the student’s knowledge in the fields of nursing, health services administration, and radiologic technology and their respective concentrations. The WCE is taken and must be passed before the student’s candidacy to the master’s degree.

The WCE is the assessment strategy in determining if the students demonstrate:

  • strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities;
  • required breadth and depth of knowledge of the discipline (nursing, health services administration, and radiologic technology) and their concentrations (teaching, leadership and management, nursing administration, adult health nursing, mother and child nursing, community health nursing, psychiatric-mental health nursing);
  • required academic background for the specific master’s research to follow;
  • potential ability to conduct independent and original research; and
  • ability to communicate knowledge of the discipline.
  • The Graduate Programs Coordinator (GPC) specifies the timing of the WCE, including the earliest and latest dates by which it must be completed.
  • Students are informed of the specific dates of their examination so that they have adequate time to prepare. This is crucial because of the importance of the examination and consequences of failure. The WCE is scheduled on the trimester that follows the enrollment of terminal academic courses. It is administered within two full days of eight hours each day.
  • Students accomplish the WCE Form and submit it to the Office of the Dean to initiate the application process.

The WCE Committee

At the time the student applies for the comprehensive examination, the GPC forms the comprehensive examination committee.  This committee includes three to five professors who taught the master’s courses.  The members of the WCE Committee write and grade the examination and indicate a satisfactory performance of a student. They may determine also that there is a deficiency and that a re-take is necessary. A deficiency is thought to exist when one or more answers are graded as unsatisfactory.

The Committee consists of the:

  • Chair: a professor in the master’s program who has taught one or two of the courses offered under the same program
  • Members: two professors who handle each of the concentrations in the master’s program; the GPC; and the Dean as ex-officio member.

Scope and Format

The content of the WCE must be consistent with its purpose. Students are given the following information: subject areas to be included in the exam and the range of material to be tested and suggestions as to how to cover this material (e.g., reading lists, courses, refereed journals, etc.).

The WCE consists of integrative questions about the specific discipline and concentrations and the student’s specific research area and associated methods. The student will choose six (6) from at least 10 questions distributed as follows:

  • Part 1: four (4) questions (from at least six (6) questions) from the specific disciplines (nursing, health services administration, and radiologic technology) and their concentrations (teaching, leadership and management, nursing administration, adult health nursing, mother and child nursing, community health nursing, psychiatric-mental health nursing); and
  • Part 2: two (2) questions (from at least four (4) questions) from the research and scholarship courses.

The WCE is not designed as a barrier but a straightforward evaluation of the student’s command of their declared fields and their preparation to move on to the challenges of writing the thesis. Its evaluation is based on the stated purpose. Students are provided with outline of the exam and are informed as to how each of the parts of the examination is factored into the committee’s final decision. Grading of the WCE is either Pass or Fail. A maximum of two attempts on each WCE is allowed.

Faculty Profile

The 12 members of the academic staff are assigned to teach their respective MSN courses based on their professional and educational qualifications. The Department also considers the extent of work experience and areas of nursing practice of the faculty in the commission of teaching loads. Nurse clinicians are delegated to relevant courses that teach clinical nursing specializations while those with extensive leadership and management portfolio are assigned to courses in nursing administration major.

Most members of the academic staff are recognized as leaders in the Philippine nursing community as evidenced by their current and past involvement as officers and consultants in some of the national and international nursing organizations. These organizations include the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA), Philippine Nursing Research Society (PNRS), Association of Nursing Service Administrators of the Philippines (ANSAP), and Association of Deans of Philippine Colleges of Nursing (ADPCN). The academic staff also maintain active membership in professional organizations which are involved in graduate or advanced education, research, and global practice of nursing such as the Philippine Association for Graduate Education (PAGE), International Network for Doctoral Education in Nursing (INDEN), Philippine Statistical Association (PSA), Research Advisory Network of the International Confederation of Midwives (RAN-ICM), and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (STTI).

The academic staff’s expertise in the different nursing areas of administration, practice, community health, and research are highly sought and valued. The academic staff members render consultation work, peer review, module and practice manual development, and in-service training for professional staff development. A number of them are also involved in quality assurance by serving as assessors/evaluators for CHED and accreditors for accrediting organizations.

RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP OF ACADEMIC STAFF

Community service/extension.

1 . Research Capability Building for JBLMGH-Nursing Service Office

Research enables nurses to identify the best evidence for clinical practice that improves patient outcomes. Nursing research, in particular, has an immense influence on the current and future professional nursing practice. The current practice setting, though, does not provide an opportunity for nurses because research is typically not among the responsibilities of frontline and bedside nurses. While the clinical setting is a rich source of researchable nursing problems there is limited capability of the human resource that is expected to carry out the task of subjecting these problems under a rigorous research process. The nursing academia, on the other hand, is a recognized seedbed of research because of the scholarship produced by its advanced studies-prepared nurse educators. The inherent strength of the academic setting in research will complement the need for capability building of nurses in the practice setting so that they can take the opportunity of developing evidence-based nursing practice and evidence-informed healthcare policies.

It is from these foregoing premises that the extension service of Holy Angel University

School of Nursing and Allied Medical Sciences to Jose B. Lingad Memorial General Hospital (JBLMGH) is based. Under the term of joint undertaking, the nursing professors act as the mentors of staff nurses who were identified to have the potential of becoming nurse researchers. The first batch of nurses forms part of the critical mass of nursing staff trained on all facets of the research process. They are mentored every single step of the way from conceptual, design and planning, empirical, analytic, and dissemination phases. The first two phases are covered in the first part while the last three phases are included in the second part of the capability-building program.

2. Outcomes-Based Education Capability Building for Good Samaritan Colleges Faculty

This extension program aims to build the capability of college faculty of Good Samaritan Colleges in designing and adopting outcomes-based education as framework for their teaching. The expertise and experience of HAU-SNAMS academic staff on outcomes-based teaching and learning are shared with the faculty members of Good Samaritan Colleges through a mentoring approach.

A doctorate in nursing is the terminal degree in the field and comes in two forms: a doctor of nursing practice (DNP) and a doctor of philosophy in nursing (Ph.D.). Compared to the more clinical DNP, a nursing Ph.D. focuses more on research, education, and policy. In this guide, we examine online nursing Ph.D. programs in more detail, delving into common career options for graduates and the best individual programs.

The typical nursing Ph.D. program lasts 4-6 years. Online learners may save time and money by taking advantage of reduced travel requirements and more flexible scheduling. Prospective students can follow multiple pathways to a doctorate in nursing, and graduates enjoy strong and varied career prospects.

The demand for nursing leaders and advanced nursing positions is high. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects the addition of over 120,000 advanced practice nursing positions between 2020 and 2030. According to the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL), the majority of nursing leaders earn $90,000-$169,999 per year.

What Is an Online Nursing Ph.D. Program?

An online nursing Ph.D. equips students with the skills and training needed to improve patient care, healthcare systems, and/or healthcare education. Students learn to research and develop theories and scholarship related to nursing practice and policy.

A nursing Ph.D differs from a DNP program in that the former focuses more on research and education while the latter focuses more on leadership and advanced clinical practice.

Why Get a Nursing Ph.D. Online?

Pursuing a nursing Ph.D. online prepares graduates for many advanced research, teaching, and leadership positions. A doctorate in nursing leads to some of the most lucrative and in-demand positions in healthcare.

Between 2020 and 2030, the BLS projects 22% job growth for nursing professors. These professionals earned a median annual wage of $75,470 , as of May 2020.

What Can I Expect From an Online Nursing Ph.D. Program?

An online doctorate in nursing may appeal to aspiring nursing professors, researchers, and healthcare leaders. In addition to developing research and leadership skills, learners can hone their communication and critical thinking abilities in these programs. Online Ph.D. students learn to tackle major issues in healthcare while balancing work, teaching, and home life.

Most programs require 45-60 credits of coursework and take 4-6 years to complete. While curricula and requirements vary by program, students may need to complete teaching and lab assignments on top of extensive research demands.

A doctorate in nursing can also help learners develop specialties through research and concentrated training. While many programs do not offer formal specializations, students may encounter the following options:

  • Nurse Educator
  • Public Health
  • Nursing Leadership
  • Nursing Informatics

Types of Nursing Ph.D. Programs

Rn/adn-to-ph.d..

While there are few, if any, RN- or ADN-to-Ph.D. pathways, similar options may be available. For example, prospective students may enroll in an RN- or ADN-to-MSN program first. Graduating from this type of bridge program can then qualify graduates for Ph.D. programs.

BSN-to-Ph.D.

BSN-to-Ph.D. programs offer students an accelerated pathway to a doctorate in nursing. These programs have the advantage of focusing on research and advanced topics at an earlier stage.

MSN-to-Ph.D.

Most Ph.D. programs require applicants to hold a master's degree. These degrees build on the advanced topics and research in MSN programs and usually take 4-6 years to complete. Students can develop their research interests and specializations in these programs.

What Courses Will I Take in an Online Doctorate in Nursing Program?

Health sciences research.

This course teaches students the methods and processes used in designing, conducting, and analyzing research in the health sciences. Covered topics may include literature searches and reviews, testing, and report writing. Students also examine major issues and developments in contemporary health sciences research.

Science in Healthcare

This class teaches students how to effectively use science in healthcare careers and research. Participants learn to capture information and translate it into useful applications for healthcare systems and practices. What Are the Admission Requirements for an Online Doctorate in Nursing Program?

Admission requirements for a doctorate in nursing vary by school and program. RN licensure is likely required at this level, and most Ph.D. programs require applicants to possess an MSN degree. However, BSN-to-Ph.D. pathways accept BSN graduates, and some traditional Ph.D. programs accept BSN graduates who have an MBA or a health-related master's degree.

Doctoral programs in nursing may also require prospective students to complete relevant prerequisites in health policy and basic sciences. Read on to learn about other common requirements.

Test Scores

Graduate schools may require applicants to submit GRE scores. While the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in many schools dropping this requirement, prospective students may still want to engage in GRE prep to boost their scores and improve their chances of admission.

Letters of Recommendation

Most programs require some form of recommendation letter. These typically come from former employers and professors who can vouch for the applicant's abilities and program readiness. Most schools require 1-3letters.

Most graduate programs ask applicants to submit a resume and cover letter . While an online nursing Ph.D. program may not require a certain amount of nursing experience, experience is necessary for many programs. Schools typically ask for resumes to learn more about an applicant's professional history.

Essays for an online doctorate in nursing program typically focus more on an applicant's future goals than their past accomplishments. While these essays may address the applicant's personal journey, they should concentrate on their research interests and how those align with the school and program.

Official Transcripts

All schools require official transcripts. These records show how well an applicant has performed in the past, which courses they took, and which courses they may still need to take. Transcripts also speak to a student's educational journey and can lead to transfer credits.

Licenses and certifications.

All RNs and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) need state licensure to practice, which requires a passing grade on a national certification exam. APRNs need at least a master's degree. While individual state nursing boards handle licensure, APRN certification can come from the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists , the American Midwifery Certification Board , or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board .

Online nursing Ph.D. graduates can also pursue specialty nursing certifications. These credentials are offered by various national organizations and provide certified professionals with a way to stand out from their peers and demonstrate specialized training and experience. While not typically required for employment, these credentials can improve a candidate's career opportunities and earning potential.

A doctorate in nursing can meet the education requirements for most specialty certifications, though candidates without an advanced practice MSN may need additional education and experience in the field. Below are several available certifications for advanced nursing professionals:

  • Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist
  • Certified Nurse-Midwife
  • Family Nurse Practitioner
  • Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner

Continuing Education

As the terminal degree in the field, an online doctorate in nursing rarely leads to another degree. Nevertheless, many graduates continue their education in various ways, including earning the continuing education credits needed to maintain licensure and certification. They may also pursue condensed graduate certificates to advance their training in a specific subdiscipline.

In some cases, Ph.D. graduates may want to pursue another healthcare doctorate degree, such as biomedical or pharmaceutical medicine.

How Do I Choose an Online Doctorate in Nursing Program?

Cost is one of the most important considerations when choosing a program for many students. According to the National Center for Education Statistics , the average cost of graduate tuition and fees was $12,171 per year at public schools and $25,929 per year at private schools during the 2018-2019 school year. When calculating price, learners should determine the true program cost by considering books, rent, and how online learning might reduce their travel expenses or out-of-state tuition rates.

Program Format

The right program features the appropriate format. Online learners can find asynchronous or synchronous delivery options, along with part-time and full-time schedules. Prospective students should align their work and home schedules with their study hours to create the best learning environment.

A school's location can play a significant role, even for distance learners. Online students can look for out-of-state schools that offer in-state tuition rates, and they should identify potential on-campus or in-person requirements to ensure they can meet them.

Accreditation

When picking a school and program, prospective students should consider accreditation . Schools must hold regional accreditation for learners to gain access to federal aid. Additionally, nursing programs must also have programmatic accreditation to qualify graduates for licensure and employment. When researching programs, seek out accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing .

Research Opportunities

Nursing Ph.D. students should consider their research interests when choosing a program. They should look at the school's faculty members, ongoing research projects, and partnering organizations to identify the best landing spot for them. Online learners also need to understand how they can participate remotely or how they can attend campus for research purposes.

Student Support

Prospective learners should figure out what kind of student support services prospective schools offer. They can look to see if a school hosts a career services team, mentorship opportunities, alumni partnerships, and other types of academic and research support. They might also look at the student organizations and research facilities available.

Selecting a Ph.D. program can be challenging. Each nurse has individual work and family demands, so the school needs to fit into the nurse’s busy life. There are a few considerations nurses should take into account when looking for a Ph.D. program:

  • Online Learning vs. Classroom Learning – Selecting an online program vs. an on-campus program is a personal choice. While some prefer the convenience and flexibility of online learning, some enjoy face-to-face, interactive learning, along with peer support. Some programs are 100% online, and some require minimal campus visits (often referred to as "hybrid" programs). Whichever the learning method, nurses should choose the one right for them.
  • Accreditation – National accreditation is critical when selecting a Ph.D. program. Proper accreditation ensures the school meets strict quality standards and allows the nurse to pursue future degree options. Also, nursing boards in some states require national (as opposed to local) accreditation for licensure. Students should look for accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ) or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN ) when researching schools.
  • Program History – Some nursing programs, including online programs, are popping up left and right. Students should be cautious and do their research when looking at Ph.D. programs. Schools that have been around a long time tend to be more reputable, and they also likely have enough data (for example, graduation rates) that the student can use to measure the program’s success.
  • Program Cost – Cost is a significant factor when deciding to return to school. Most websites are transparent with the tuition cost and associated expenses, so there won't be any surprises. Many schools offer financial aid options as well as the choice to attend part-time. However, students should also prepare for additional expenses such as immunization requirements, technology equipment requirements, supplies, parking fees, and graduation or university fees.
  • Residency/Internship Requirements – Studying course material is one part of Ph.D. programs, but nurses must also apply what they’ve learned to real life. Nurses should make sure that whichever program they choose, they are able to meet the practicum requirements. Ensuring they have resources and mentors in the community and surrounding organizations is crucial to the student's success.

RELATED : Dual DNP/PhD Programs

As stated earlier, choosing an online program vs. an on-campus depends on the needs of the student. Below are some advantages of both online and on-campus programs:

Online Ph.D. Nursing Program Advantages

  • Flexible schedule – Nurses can work around the clock. They may work weekends, holidays, swing shifts, and graveyard shifts. For this reason, a school must be flexible. Online programs allow nurses to study course material when they can as well as learn at their own pace. They can submit assignments and correspond with instructors and peers electronically, not having to wait until the class or the instructor's office hours.
  • Tuition and Costs – An advantage of online Ph.D. programs is cost. In some cases, students may select a school that is based outside their state. Schools sometimes don't charge different tuition rates for out-of-state students in their online programs, which is a significant cost-saver and allows more education options. Students are encouraged to research this thoroughly, however.
  • Accessibility and Convenience – As stated earlier, online programs are far more flexible than campus programs. At the touch of a button, students can access learning materials, peers, instructors, and online learning modules. They can study in the middle of the night, on holidays, on weekends, or whenever it's convenient. They are not limited to certain hours on certain days. Plus, they don’t need to waste time commuting, parking, and walking to class.
  • Fast Completion – Many online programs boast rapid completion. While students need to be wary of schools that advertise this (specific curricula must be completed), some legitimate online programs do allow students to finish faster than traditional, campus programs. This is because students can study at their own pace. If eager to start out in their new role, online learning might be the way to go.

On-Campus Ph.D. in Nursing Program Advantages

While more and more online nursing programs are popping up, some students still prefer traditional campus learning. Some advantages of on-campus education include:

  • The ability to interact face-to-face with peers and instructors
  • Not having to worry about technology issues
  • Not needing to spend extra money on electronic or technological supplies
  • Accreditation is usually not a concern

While admission requirements for a Ph.D. in nursing program may vary between schools, prospective students may be required to:

  • Hold a current, unencumbered RN/APRN license
  • Hold a BSN or MSN from an accredited university (some schools allow admission for BSN nurses)
  • Have completed a specific number of clinical hours
  • Provide transcripts from all schools attended
  • Have a GPA of 3.5 or higher (specific GPA requirements may vary between schools)
  • Submit a written goal statement to include research career goals
  • Interview with faculty

Ph.D. in Nursing Course Topics

Since the Ph.D. in nursing is more research and education-focused, the course topics differ from that of a more clinically-focused degree program (such as the DNP). Course topics may include:

  • Qualitative and quantitative research
  • Scientific inquiry
  • Synthesis and application of nursing knowledge
  • Research development
  • Chronic illness and care systems

Program Length

The didactic/clinical portion of the Ph.D. program can take around 1-3 years to complete depending on if the nurse starts from a BSN or MSN. The first year is reserved for core courses, while the following year and beyond focus on electives specific to the student's goals and the completion of a teaching practicum. Students are also required to complete a dissertation as well; the dissertation period may take another 1-3 years to complete, depending on the student’s area of focus.

While some nurses choose to earn a Ph.D. to fulfill their educational goals, sometimes it is a requirement for certain positions. Examples include:

  • Nurse educator or instructor
  • Nurse or hospital administrator
  • Research facilities
  • Government and public health nursing roles

Some may even consider a Post-Doctoral Nursing Fellowship Program .

Popular with nurses interested in teaching and research, Ph.D. nursing programs have grown in popularity and are available at schools across the United States. Below you will find a state-by-state guide on available Ph.D. in nursing programs.

Ph.D. Nursing Education Programs

What is a ph.d. nursing education degree, 2024 - best phd in nursing education programs, are online ph.d. nursing education programs available, nursing education ph.d. vs. other doctorate degree types, list of ph.d. nursing education degree programs.

If your career goals include research and advanced practice nursing, earning a degree beyond a bachelor’s is essential. You have the option of earning either a Master of Science (MSN) in nursing education or a doctorate degree, such as the Ph.D in Nursing Education. Your career goals and the length of time it takes to complete each program are the top considerations when determining which option is right for you. Luckily, online Ph.D. Nurse Educator programs are available for those who don't think they have the time for a doctorate degree of this caliber.

Online Ph.D. Nurse Educator Programs

A Ph.D. nurse educator degree is a doctorate, meaning it's the highest degree level a Nurse Educator can obtain (with equal standing given to other doctorate types, as discussed below). The American Association of Colleges of Nursing endorsed changing the minimum entry-level requirement for nurse educators from a master's to a doctorate in 2004. Since then, it has been more challenging for people with an MSN to secure a nurse educator job due to high competition. Schools in all 50 states now offer nurse educator doctorates.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that nurse educators with the most experience and education earn approximately $125,000 annually. Examples of coursework you will complete at the doctorate level include:

  • Care Systems and Chronic Illness
  • Quantitative and Qualitative Research
  • Research and Development
  • Scientific Inquiry

All Ph.D. candidates prepare a dissertation they research, write, and defend. The process takes one to three years, depending on your interests and chosen topic.

It is one of the largest independent universities in the United States, and its diverse student body is composed of students from over 100 countries.

Liberty offers a wide range of degree programs, including a PhD in Nursing Education. With an emphasis on Christian values, Liberty provides students with an education rooted in faith.

University of Northern Colorado

The University of Northern Colorado is located in Greeley, Colorado and is a public university. With 14,902 students, it offers over 100 undergraduate and graduate programs, including a PhD in Nursing Education. UNC has a strong commitment to student success and a tradition of excellence.

online phd in nursing philippines

You have plenty of online enrollment options from the University of Alabama to the University of Wyoming. The hundreds of schools across the United States that offer this degree option typically do so either entirely online or as a hybrid program.

Before enrolling at a school, reflect on how you learn best and your preferences regarding whether to complete courses online or in person. If you work, have a family to care for, or both, you will probably find the online option most convenient due to the flexibility. You can watch lectures and complete assignments whenever it is convenient for you.

A mix between online and traditional on-campus delivery could be ideal if you value face-to-face interactions with professors and other students. Regardless of your chosen option, you should be aware that you must complete your clinical requirements in person.

Nurse Educator Ph.D. Prerequisites

Admissions requirements are usually the same for campus-based and online Nurse Educator Ph.D. programs. Typical prerequisites include:

  • Completion of a BSN or MSN degree from an accredited institution
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 in all previous college coursework
  • GRE exam score
  • Official transcripts from all previous schools attended
  • Personal statement describing your career goals
  • Unrestricted U.S.RN license
  • Up to three letters of recommendation

Obtaining certification as a nurse educator can give you a competitive advantage. The National League for Nursing offers certification options for nurse educators and clinical nurse educators.

Below is the admissions process at Grand Canyon University , which is typical of schools offering this degree program. The process is the same for online and on-campus students, except for the requirement that students attending in-person classes schedule a campus visit before courses begin.

The first step at any college or university is to submit a request form that indicates the degree you prefer, whether you're interested in the online or hybrid option, and your timeline for starting your studies. Next, you should complete the school's application and attach all the above information. If you need financial aid, researching your options is the next step. It would help if you waited to hear from the school about your official acceptance.

According to the BLS, the demand for nurse educators is higher than average. Thanks to an aging population and increasingly complex health conditions, the agency does not expect the demand to lower anytime soon.

Students sometimes confuse this degree option with the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). The focus of the Ph.D. nurse educator degree is scholarly research and inquiry, with the purpose of expanding knowledge about nursing. In contrast, students pursue the DNP degree to improve patient outcomes. The primary focus is obtaining higher-level skills in nursing.

Regarding coursework, DNP candidates focus on advanced practice nursing, evidence-based nursing, and developing leadership skills. Typical courses in DNP programs include:

  • Administration and Budget Planning
  • Clinical Diagnosis
  • Disease Management
  • Healthcare Policy
  • Healthcare System Transformation

Besides the Ph.D. and nursing education DNP , students have the option of one other doctorate degree as well: the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in nursing education . This degree type is suited for academia, advocacy, and policy, and is not as widely available as the other doctorate degree pathways.

Earning a Nurse Educator Ph.D. doesn't limit you to working only in the field of education. The whole purpose of obtaining the doctorate in the first place is to widen your career options. Here are some popular job titles for people with this advanced credential:

  • Clinical Nurse Educator
  • Nursing Curriculum Coordinator
  • Nursing Education Consultant
  • Nursing Professional Development Specialist

Nurse Educator Ph.D., DNP, and Ed.D. programs offer a terminal degree, meaning you have earned the highest degree available.

Types of Online PhD Nursing Programs

These are the three most common degrees for a doctoral degree in nursing. Click on the one that most interests you to jump to that section.

PhD in Nursing Education

Phd in healthcare leadership.

Each one can help prepare you for a different career in the medical field.

head nurse talking to fellow nurses in hospital

A doctor of philosophy (PhD) in Nursing Education can help prepare you to teach nursing at the university level.

As a practicing nurse yourself, you may have the experience and expertise for delivering high-quality care in a clinical setting. Your doctorate coursework can help you become an expert teacher as well so that you can pass on what you’ve learned to upcoming nurses.

The curriculum for this program typically focuses on learning theories and teaching strategies, curriculum development, how to evaluate nursing students, and the ethics of nursing.

After you graduate, you may become a professor, a professional trainer at a hospital, or a dedicated researcher who presents new findings to the nursing world. In any of these roles, you may be shaping the future of the medical field as you teach or otherwise inform nursing professionals.

nurses having an administrative meeting

With a PhD in Healthcare Leadership or Healthcare Management, you might teach at a university or continue working in a clinical setting as an administrator.

Your courses will likely focus on setting a vision for your institution, monitoring and evaluating your organization’s performance, financial management, patient care, and applicable laws and regulations.

You might also take classes that address specific issues or help you to develop certain skills, such as opioid medicines, environmental safety, health management information systems, research methods and statistics, and public speaking.

If you enjoy the business side of the medical world and want to make a real difference in your institution, this may be the track for you.

nurse and doctor discussing in hospital lobby

The two main options for graduates with this degree is to become a hospital or office administrator or to become a nurse practitioner. You may also serve as a trainer in your organization.

If you choose to go in the direction of administration, you might be a nurse manager or help to set policy for your organization. Your coursework will likely focus on delivering excellent patient care, management, and financial responsibility.

The second popular option is to study to be a nurse practitioner. While this degree doesn’t qualify you to be a doctor per se, you can perform many functions that a doctor does, including seeing and diagnosing patients, administering anesthesia, and delivering babies as a nurse midwife.

You’ll work under a doctor who approves any medicine prescriptions or certain treatment plans.

What Is the Difference between a DNP and a PhD in Nursing?

The main differences between a PhD and DNP include the following:

As you can see, the average salary range is fairly close, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The gap between PhD nursing programs and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs  boils down to what you plan on doing once you complete your coursework and how long your program will take.

PhD students focus on research and the development of nursing theory, as well as how to communicate with students and other parties once these graduates take on positions within the educational field. Though the coursework is shorter, PhD students will likely need to write a dissertation to demonstrate their research skills and expertise over the subject matter.

On the other hand, DNP students plan to put this research and exploration of theory to practice in a more hands-on manner. Members of this group specialize in the application of their learning via clinical practice and administration. They might manage other nurses or serve as a family nurse practitioner  in a doctor’s office.

DNP students typically spend longer in their programs, but their final projects aren’t usually as time-consuming as writing a dissertation.

Online PhD in Nursing Program Curriculum

  • Activities and Responsibilities of the Nurse Scientist
  • Quantitative Research Design and Methods
  • Scientific Perspectives in Nursing
  • Statistical Methods in Public Health

Typically, a PhD in Nursing requires a dissertation. However, some universities offer a Doctor of Nursing Practice with no dissertation .

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Concentrations

Like most other doctoral programs, there’s plenty of opportunities to further refine your learning experience via coursework specializations. Some of the most common concentrations include:

  • Nursing Education
  • Nursing Leadership
  • Nursing Administration
  • Health Policy
  • Specializations for Nurse Practitioners

A concentration can help enhance your understanding of a unique area in the field, thereby increasing your value and competency when it comes time to apply this learning in a professional setting.

Accreditation for Doctoral Nursing Programs

logos of accreditation boards for nursing programs

When you’re looking for a university to attend, make sure that it is properly accredited. Accreditation by an independent third-party can help ensure that your university and nursing program meets the highest standards. Your university as a whole should be accredited by one of these six regional boards.

  • Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
  • Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)
  • New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE)
  • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)
  • WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC)

Financial Aid for Students in Online Nursing PhD or DNP Programs

screenshot of FAFSA website

Financial aid is not just for undergrads. Doctoral students can take advantage of it as well. And earning your degree online or on campus doesn’t affect the aid that you qualify for.
