Quantifying the User Experience: Practical Statistics for User Research 2nd Edition, Kindle Edition

Quantifying the User Experience: Practical Statistics for User Research, Second Edition, provides practitioners and researchers with the information they need to confidently quantify, qualify, and justify their data. The book presents a practical guide on how to use statistics to solve common quantitative problems that arise in user research. It addresses questions users face every day, including, Is the current product more usable than our competition? Can we be sure at least 70% of users can complete the task on their first attempt? How long will it take users to purchase products on the website?

This book provides a foundation for statistical theories and the best practices needed to apply them. The authors draw on decades of statistical literature from human factors, industrial engineering, and psychology, as well as their own published research, providing both concrete solutions (Excel formulas and links to their own web-calculators), along with an engaging discussion on the statistical reasons why tests work and how to effectively communicate results. Throughout this new edition, users will find updates on standardized usability questionnaires, a new chapter on general linear modeling (correlation, regression, and analysis of variance), with updated examples and case studies throughout.

  • Completely updated to provide practical guidance on solving usability testing problems with statistics for any project, including those using Six Sigma practices
  • Includes new and revised information on standardized usability questionnaires
  • Includes a completely new chapter introducing correlation, regression, and analysis of variance
  • Shows practitioners which test to use, why they work, and best practices for application, along with easy-to-use Excel formulas and web-calculators for analyzing data

James r. lewis.

James R. (Jim) Lewis is currently a senior human factors engineer (at IBM since 1981), with a primary focus on the design and evaluation of user interfaces (graphical, spoken, mobile). He is a Certified Human Factors Professional with a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology (Psycholinguistics). Jim is an internationally recognized expert in usability testing and measurement. He was the technical team lead for the human factors/usability group working in IBM speech product development from 1999 through 2005, and has experience in all areas of speech system usability (including desktop systems, embedded systems, text-to-speech systems, speech interactive voice response applications, and natural language understanding technologies). Before that, he was the lead user experience designer for a number of mobile products, including the product now widely regarded as the first smart phone, the Simon. He is the author of the books Practical Speech User Interface Design (2011) and Quantifying the User Experience: Practical Statistics for User Research (2012).

He has worked on speech and touchtone projects in the United States and internationally for major customers in diverse areas such as consumer electronics, 401K plan management, insurance, reservations, telecom, banking, emergency road service, entertainment, state benefits, HR, and telematics. He currently serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction and the Journal of Usability Studies, and on the scientific advisory boards of the Center for Research and Education on Aging and Technology Enhancement (CREATE) and the Human-Computer Interaction International conferences. He is a member of the Usability Professionals Association (UPA), the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI), and serves on the board of the Association for Voice Interaction Design (AVIxD).

Customer reviews

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

The IFA-503.1 and −503.2 in-reactor experiments in the HBWR (Norway) are comparable to the microstructural studies of four types of VVER and PWR uranium dioxide fuel fabricated to standard specifications. On the basis of analysis, the radiation stability of VVER fuel as compared with PWR fuel isevaluated and a quantitative dependence of the effect of the initial submicron porosity on the thermoradiation densification of all experimental fuels is obtained. Data confirming a correlation between the radiation densification and a thermal test for dimensional stability are obtained for the fuels studied. Complex experimental studies made it possible to expand the database for verifying thermo-mechanical models and codes intended for predicting the behavior of high-burnup VVER.
