After working with many designers throughout my own career and helping many more build their job-ready portfolios, there are a few designers that I keep coming back to for inspiration and some that are inspiring a new generation of UI/UX and Product Designers to enter the field.

I've chosen 10 of our favorite UI/UX and Product Designers—a colorful tapestry of digital product architects that have evolved from graphic designers, marketers, architects, engineers and everything in-between. Their unique backgrounds and journey bring something special to our industry and illustrate how we can all do more meaningful, interesting and impactful work:

There are 10 things in particular that make these 10 designers really stand out:

  • They have each honed their craft from the bottom up (whether having gone through a traditional academic program, an online course like DesignerUp , or being self-taught).
  • They are all at different stages of their careers (some newly minted and others seasoned veterans).
  • They continue to learn, grow, push the envelope, document and share their genuine experiences.
  • They each hail from a different background (and sometimes non-design industry) that informs who they are and what they work on as a designer.

“Engagement” is a term that is so overused in product management that it has almost lost its meaning. So often I’ve heard from teams, “We’ll measure the success of this test with engagement,” which could mean anything from feature click-through to bounce to we-aren’t-really-sure-this-will-drive-conversion-so-we’re-hedging-our-bet. Underneath, the reason this term has been co-opted and jargonized is that genuine, productive engagement can be ramped toward long-term customer loyalty. And loyalty pays off: a loyalty increase of 7% can boost lifetime profits per customer by as much as 85%, and a loyalty increase of 3% can correlate to a 10% cost reduction ( Brand Keys ).

As with any unsolicited design project, the challenge comes with a lack of access to application analytics and technical feasibilities. Everyone has a preference, and apps have come out to try and address every need.

The competitive business environment conditions of market have compelled to reduce the development period of products; therefore, organizations are more focused on optimizing product development period to satisfy customers' needs quickly. This study aims to shorten the development period of moulded case circuit breaker (MCCB) using design for Six Sigma (DFSS) approach and ensure sustainable product development using reliability analysis. In this study, the DFSS approach has been demonstrated using define measure analyze design and verify (DMADV) methodology with appropriate tools and techniques at each stage for the development of MCCB. The mechanical endurance test (MET), electrical endurance test (EET) and temperature rise test (TRT) have been performed to ensure the sustainability of the developed MCCB. The comparative analysis of the TRT results of the existing and uprated MCCB shows the reduction in temperature rise by 10 °C at the terminal. The efforts and time required for product development have been reduced due to the uprating of existing MCCB and reliability of uprated MCCB is computed as 98.44% by analyzing collected data using Weibull distribution. The analysis shows the wear-out failure of MCCB components as the shape factor value of the Weibull distribution is greater than one. This study concludes that every organization should critically reinvestigate the product to explore the opportunity for improving the quality and functionality of the product using appropriate tools and techniques. This case study clearly shows improvement in product reliability and quality which results in cost-saving business.

Difference between industrial designer and product designer is not precisely defined. There is a lot of discussions and misunderstandings about these two professions. What is the job of industrial designer and what is the job of product designer? This question if often asked from people, which want to hire someone to design a new product for them. Through this research, same real-life design contest is given to group of students from Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Mechanical Design, at Industrial design course and to group of students from Academy of Fine Arts, Department of Product Design as product design project. Goal of the contest was to design an upholstered chair for indoor use with a modern and refined style. Goal of this research was to find some unique characteristic of designs from industrial designers and product designers. Resulted designs were evaluated analysing the fulfilment of the requirements criteria defined by contest and analysing additional criteria, which is important for new product design. Analysing the resulted designs some important conclusions are made. Most important conclusion is that industrial designer can be product designer but product designer cannot be industrial designer. For product design, engineering knowledge is not necessary, but for industrial design, it is most important.
