Computer Games Essay

This page analyzes a  computer games essay  and also notes how you can make good use of the question to plan and organize your essay.

You have to be careful with this essay as although you have to discuss the pros and cons of the issue, there is a second part to the question that is not about this.

Take a look at the IELTS task 2 question:

Nowadays many people have access to computers on a wide basis and a large number of children play computer games.

What are the positive and negative impacts of playing computer games and what can be done to minimize the bad effects?

The Topic and the Task

Remember to always analyze the question carefully. The topic should be fairly clear:

  • Computer games

Remember to also look carefully to see if the topic is being narrowed down to a particular aspect of the topic. In this case it is:

Children Computer Games Essay

Now you need to check what the task is. How many things do you have to write about?

Hopefully you realized there are three things that you can easily turn into brainstorming questions:

  • What are the positive impacts of computer games on children?
  • What are the negative impacts of computer games on children?
  • How can the negative impacts be minimized?

Your answers to these questions will form your computer games essay.

You do not have much time and you have three things to answer, so one or two ideas for each is enough, as remember you will need to explain your ideas and give examples.

Now, take a look at the model answer.

Computer Games Essay Question:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Nowadays many people have access to computers on a wide basis and a large number of children play computer games.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

Computer Games Essay Model Answer:

Access to computers has increased significantly over recent decades, and the number of children playing games on computers has increased too. This essay will consider the positive and negative impacts of this and discuss ways to avoid the potential negative effects.

With regards to the positive effects, playing computer games can develop children’s cognitive skills. Many popular games require abstract and high level thinking skills in order to win, skills that may not be taught at school. For example, children need to follow instructions, solve complex problems and use logic in many of the games that are currently popular. Such experience will be beneficial to a child’s progression into an adult.

However, concerns have been raised about the prolific use of computer games by children, much of this related to the violence they contain. The problem is that in many of the games children are rewarded for being more violent, and this violence is repeated again and again. For instance, many games involve children helping their character to kill, kick, stab and shoot. This may lead to increased aggressive feelings, thoughts, and behaviours.

In order to minimize these negative impacts, parents need to take certain steps. Firstly, some video games are rated according to their content, so parents must check this and ensure their children are not allowed to have access to games that are unsuitable. Parents can also set limits on the length of time games are played. Finally, parents should also take an active interest in the games their children are playing so they can find out how they feel about what they are observing.

To sum up, there are benefits of computer games, but there are disadvantages too. However, if parents take adequate precautions, the severity of these negative impacts can be avoided.

( 295 Words )

Persuasive Essay: Video Games Are Beneficial

According to research released by the Entertainment Software Association over fifty percent of parents believe video games are a positive part of their child’s life (ESA). Video games are beneficial, because they aid in childhood development, have the ability to relieve stress in people, and their aid in the reduction of cognitive decline in older aging adults.

Video games were first introduced in the 1970s in the form of arcade games but became more common during the 1980s with the introduction of the Atari 2600. During this time parents believed that video games would be atrocious for children’s minds. Their main concern was the violent influence of video games that more commonly appeared in the early-2000s with games such as Call of Duty. Video game systems became very prevalent inside the home during the mid-2000s with Nintendo’s introduction of the Wii. This system changed the view of gaming because the Wii was advertised as a whole family system. After all, the whole family could play together or each family member individually. This system also became the most popular gaming system since it sold many different accessories and games such as the Wii Fit with the Wii Balance Board, this was an exercise-based game that is now generally known as exergaming.

Currently, we as a civilization are looking to research this topic every day.“Important research has already been conducted for decades on the negative effects of gaming, including addiction, depression and aggression, and we are certainly not suggesting that this should be ignored,” said lead author Isabela Granic, in The Netherlands. “However, to understand the impact of video games on children’s and adolescents’ development, a more balanced perspective is needed.” (American) We have had many debates on this topic and have concluded that video games are not bad for kids and they help them grow as an individual, video games despite good it’s not a one size fits all thing, some games are not appropriate for a certain demographic such as violent bloody games for example call of duty wouldn’t be given to a toddler. Currently, the views from parents and society are that games can help a person develop and it is a great pass time for kids. Video games have a lot more benefits than disadvantages when played safely and in moderation.” In the end, gaming doesn’t have a negative connotation, it is the society that gives it a negative vibe. It has been proven to help better surgeons and military soldiers on countless occasions" (Caviston).Video games are beneficial. because they aid in childhood development, ability to relieve stress in people, and their aid in the reduction of cognitive decline in older aging adults.

One reason why video games are beneficial is they aid in childhood development. Early childhood development is the foundation of whom a person will become and what skills they will possess in the future. According to a blog post from a group at Penn State, there are many skills children can acquire from gaming such as following instructions, problem-solving, resource management, multi-tasking, perseverance, and the introduction to technology (Caviston), which they will need in our ever-changing society.

The second reason why video games are beneficial is their ability to relieve stress in people of all ages. Stress is something everyone of all ages goes through, stress can be from many different things such as an assignment due date, test, the feeling you said something wrong, the worry of fitting in a group or place. Stress comes from many different things and people choose to relieve stress in various ways, some people like to go to a library and read a book, some people like to sleep, some people eat there stress away, and some people like to play video games. Video games have and continue to help people relieve stress and help people prevent stress.

The third reason video games are beneficial is the reduction of cognitive deterioration in older aging adults. As people age, along with the body, one’s mind becomes older too, they begin to be forgetful and may need longer to remember things such as names or information. There are many ways to help prevent cognitive decline and one of those is gaming. Gaming systems such as the Nintendo Wii, the Wii were used in rehabilitation programs to build cognitive skills including memory (Brain Games). According to a study held by the University of Santiago de Compostela, they found in there data “The meta-analyses indicated that the interventions were associated with significant improvements in speed of processing” (Casa).

The final benefit of video games is they help produce well-rounded individuals. “According to a review of research in American Psychologist, Playing video games, including violent shooter games, may boost children's learning, health, and social skills” (Bowen). In recent research in doctors, in most small surgeries they use robotic tools that have controllers similar to video game controllers and they found that doctors with more experience with video games have a decreased failure rate and faster completion times compared to surgeons without prior videogame experience (Can Video Games...).

Based on findings above, the majority of research concludes video games are beneficial. Their are always cavaouts with these claims, not every game is made the same and thus will not be beneficial for all people such as children and older adults. Video games will olny be effective when used in modoration and when used properly. Do you think video games are beneficial?

7 Reasons to Play Computer Games

Playing computer games can be good for you in a number of ways..

Posted March 21, 2016 | Reviewed by Matt Huston

fancycrave1/Pixabay

Be honest, you want to be smarter. There’s nothing wrong with that. Studies consistently demonstrate that intelligence is among the most desirable qualities a person has. Whether it's trying to survive an intensive college schedule, appreciate the finer points of Machiavellianism , or impress friends with an accomplished understanding of string theory, we all have our reasons.

A lot of people agree with the idea that learning should be fun. It’s a bit surprising, but in some ways, computer games can teach valuable lessons and may even help improve your mental faculties. Here's what you should consider.

1. Failure is key to success.

Ask pretty much anyone who has ever had any success in anything if they have ever failed. You will invariably get a resounding “Yes!” because everyone has failed at something. Most people probably know about Thomas Edison and his spectacular failure rate (or his successful ruling out of thousands of possible solutions, if you’re a glass-half-full kind of person), but here are a few other examples:

  • J.K. Rowling was rejected by 12 publishers
  • Einstein didn’t speak until he was 4 and didn’t read until he was 7
  • Van Gogh only sold 1 painting in his lifetime
  • Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team.

Failure is important.

In many video games, you start out with more than one ‘life’. Straight away this tells you that failure is OK. A lot of the play consists of failing to reach a goal. This encourages persistence and grit: the ability to stick with a problem and see it through without getting demoralized and giving up. This is a really important life skill.

2. Computer games may increase your problem-solving skills.

Consider some advice from Jane McGonigal (designer of alternate reality games, Ph.D. in performance studies): she suggests that if you want to have fun and stimulate your mind, playing about three times a week for just 20 minutes each time should do it.

Just about all of the most popular video games have some requirement for problem-solving and/or critical thinking. This promotes adaptability and cognitive flexibility. These are really important skills to have in any kind of problem-solving task.

3. Gaming keeps your mind active.

It’s unfortunate but inevitable: as we go through life we succumb to both physical and mental decline. Going to the gym or having frequent sex will help to prevent (or at least slow down) the physical losses. To stave off mental decay one must maintain an active brain. Doing crosswords, Sudoku, playing brain games or video games (as long as they’re not entirely mindless) might all help to curb the loss.

While there is no definitive study involving video games and aging, research suggests that seniors who stay mentally active are about 2.6 times less likely to develop Alzheimer’s or dementia . Additionally, a number of studies have suggested that playing video games can help to improve memory (and mood). Clearly the message here is to give both your grandparents and great grandparents Xboxes this Christmas.

4. Gamers are better at visual tasks.

Studies have indicated that compared to non-gamers, experienced gamers are better at: tracking objects; keeping track of several objects simultaneously; filtering out irrelevant information; switching from task to task; detecting changes in visual layouts; and 3D mental rotation.

A recent study conducted by researchers at Brown University found that video game practice was associated with improved visual learning. At least one experiment has found evidence that playing video games can improve the mental rotation abilities of non-gamers.

5. Gaming may increase processing speed.

Being able to process information rapidly is critical in many situations. Motorists, for example, are presented with a lot of information (some of it constantly changing) and asked to make rapid and accurate decisions that can have dramatic implications. In decision making , however, speed is typically sacrificed for accuracy or vice versa. To put it simply, fast decisions often lead to mistakes.

The 1926 St. Louis Cardinals one their first of 11 World Series titles, defeating the New York Yankees. For most baseball fans, nostalgia tied to this event would be historical nostalgia - an appreciation for a distant-yet-self-referential past.

Computer games often require rapid processing of sensory information and prompt action. Indecision or delays in response are penalized. Players are therefore highly motivated to reduce their reaction time (RT).

A few studies have found that gamers have better RTs than non-gamers. This is hardly surprising, but what may be is that this speed generalizes to various tasks (not just the specific game), and that the increased speed does not lead to a decline in accuracy. So basically, gamers process and respond faster, but they don’t lose any accuracy when doing so. Some of these studies have indicated causality by showing that RTs can be trained by game-play!

6. Gamers may have enhanced memory.

A team of neurobiologists from the University of California has found evidence that playing 3D computer games can boost memory power.

They got a group of people to play 2D games half an hour a day for two weeks, and another group to play 3D games half an hour a day for two weeks. Everyone was given a memory test before and after the two weeks. The 2D group didn’t really improve at all, but the 3D group improved by 12%.

7. Playing computer games may improve your ability to multitask.

There is significant evidence that, as Daphne Bevelier (a professor of brain and cognitive sciences who has conducted 20+ studies on playing action video games) put it, “action video games are far from mindless." Her studies suggest that gamers have improved skills in attention , cognition , vision, and multitasking.

In non-gamers, reaction times increased by about 30% when they switched from a single task to more than one task. Gamers still had an increase, but it was only by about 10%.

A study appearing in Nature in 2013 found that just playing a basic 3D racing game for a total of 12 hours over a period of four weeks appeared to improve multitasking performance for up to six months. Improvements were seen in 20-70 year-olds but surprisingly, the trained 60+ year-olds outperformed 20-year-olds who hadn’t played the game. Various other cognitive abilities (sustained attention, working memory, etc.) also improved among older subjects.

To sum this article up in a single phrase: play 3D video games (in moderation), especially if you are over 50.

Benefit of Playing Video Games

This essay will discuss the benefits of playing video games, challenging the common negative perceptions. It will cover cognitive, social, and emotional advantages, such as improved problem-solving skills, enhanced hand-eye coordination, and opportunities for social interaction. The piece will also consider the educational potential of video games and their role in skill development. Moreover, at PapersOwl, there are additional free essay samples connected to Video Game.

How it works

Video games are seen as a useless entertainment to many parents and even some educators believe that they damage a child’s brain. Over the years, violent video games have been blamed for leading people to a life of crime because they believe that games are the cause of kids becoming violent or develop an antisocial behavior. In reality many psychologists and scientists have found that playing video games can actually have benefits towards a person’s brain. Video games can eventually teach kids skills that they will need and use in their lives.

Today everyone has played video games for fun, but some have put it to the test to use video games for research purposes. In a study done in New York, one set of surgeons played video games for 3 hours a week, while the other set played none. The set who played the video games made 37 percent fewer mistakes during laparoscopic (Medical bag). In another study, those who play action video games on a regular basis can process visual information faster and can track 30 percent more objects than non gamers. Action video games are shown to increase one’s contrast sensitivity, or the ability to notice minute changes in color against a uniform background. One group of gamers played action games, like Call of Duty, while the others played The Sims. The Call of Duty group showed a 38 percent increase in aforementioned sensitivity, whereas the Sims group showed none whatsoever. Video games can also slim you down. Wii Fit, for example, has players doing yoga, stretches and other exercise in order to unlock fun and exercise. Dance Dance Revolution requires players to dance by placing their feet on the corresponding arrows. After a while, players work up a sweat due to the required rapid movement. Gaming can also make you smarter. People who play video games display fluid intelligence and problem solving. Managing multiple objectives and multiple resources is one of the goals that helps you become smarter. Learning the rules of the game and what strategy works best for you also helps you.

When playing video games, the coordination and concentration can physically, socially, and mentally benefit the user. Research today shows that certain video games can reduce fat and therefore promote weight loss. Other sources state that doctors have instructed parents to let their children play video games to help control focus. Active video games are also being marketed for adults. New Gaming companies have been turning their gaming systems into exercise machines. The workout levels are increasing stamina causing weight loss and health awareness. The new video machines can drastically change an adults workout routine.

Video games can also improve visual skills and brain function. Action video games train the brain to better process certain visual information. When people play action video games, they’re changing the brain’s pathway responsible for visual processing. When people play action games, they’re changing the brain’s pathway responsible for visual processing. These games push the human visual system to the limits and the brain adapts to it, and we’ve seen the positive effect remains even two years after the training was over. By playing Action video games, vision improves up to 58 percent. Video games that involve high levels of action, such as first-person-shooter games, increase a player’s real-world vision, according to research in today’s Nature Neuroscience. The ability to discern slight differences in shades of gray has long been thought to be an attribute of the human visual system that cannot be improved. But Daphne Bavelier, professor of brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester, has discovered that very practiced action gamers become 58 percent better at perceiving fine differences in contrast. Normally, improving contrast sensitivity means getting glasses or eye surgery. However, this will need further testing in people with this condition. As a treatment for poor eyesight generally though, gaming is unlikely to replace conventional approaches in the near future. Bavelier had previously found that game players had better vision when compared with non-game players. She says that these video games, and spending time in front of the computer, may not be harmful to our vision. The researchers suggest that this indicates that playing video games could have potential for improving some conditions such as amblyopia (Rochester.edu). Additionally, evidence has shown that gaming can help with psychological problems and games reduce symptoms of depression more than conventional treatment. Another research team at Oxford University found that playing Tetris shortly after exposure to something very upsetting in the experiment, a film of traumatic scenes of injury and death was used, can actually prevent people from having disturbing thoughts (oxford.edu). Therefore playing games can also help in releasing tension and help a person to have lighter thoughts.

The effects are not always so positive, however. Indiana University researchers carried out brain scans on young men and found evidence that violent games can alter brain function after as little as a week of play, affecting regions in the brain associated with emotional control and causing more aggressive behaviour (Indiana.edu). But Daphne Bavelier, one of the most experienced researchers in the field, says that the violent action games that often worry most parents may actually have the strongest beneficial effect on the brain (Bavelier). Games like Mortal Kombat, Grand Theft Auto, Doom and others, have taken the blame for various heinous crimes (Gross). Certain government officials have even gone as far as filing lawsuits against the developing companies in an attempt to outlaw video games in general. Not only that, but they have also been under inspection for supposedly causing a gaming “”addiction””.

Some of the other controversial video games are also the ones with the greatest potential benefits. Fast-paced, FPS like BioShock Infinite, Halo, Half-Life, Borderlands and third-person equivalents like God of War: Ascension, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Force Unleashed have all been accused of being too violent, but the benefits gamers gain from playing them are astounding. Researchers like Daphne Bavelier and C. Shawn Green have been able to demonstrate in multiple laboratory tests that playing these fast-paced games increases a person’s ability to try multiple pieces of visual information and decrease reaction time. They also have worked with another researcher, Alexandre Pouget, and showed that fast-action games also decrease decision making time. Basically, these games have so much going on all the time that for someone not used to following and tracking so much information it can be overwhelming. Gamers have no trouble keeping up with this information overload. The players are able to assess, make decisions and react quickly because they have learned how to do so in order to play and advance. If they are playing by themselves they may have to give orders to their computer allies. If they are playing with other humans then they have to be able to communicate effectively with them while tracking all the other data. This shows how playing video games cna help a person be more confident in telling others what to do and helps their communication skills and interact with others better. The brains of gamers adapt so quickly, that they can keep track of all the information they need to. Bavelier and her team found that a video gamer’s brain physically changes so that the player can process all of this information, and, most importantly, use it. A video gamer is capable of making accurate, informed decisions faster than a non-gamer with the same percentage of right answers. Bavelier and Green demonstrated that this benefit from fast-action video games sticks around for at least six months after a test subject has played only 10 hours over the course of 2 weeks. This means that every person can gain this benefit without actually being a gamer, as long as he or she is willing to put in a few hours a week to train his or her brains. This is really exciting because many of these changes have immediate benefits other senacios such as driving because when driving, the increased awareness, ability to track the many things going on around us and to make correct, fast decisions about likely outcomes of movements is invaluable in the prevention of car accidents. Playing video games has a huge impact on an individual’s brain and as a result has a direct impact on how gamers interact with and navigate our world.

Many gamers are told over and over that they have trouble focusing, but they do so well in focusing when there is so much happening on their screens all the time. Exciting new research, again from Daphne Bavelier and her team, is showing that gamers’ attention and focus is actually better than that of non-gamers. They are capable of resolving visual conflicts faster, which is frequently used in the lab to determine attention and focus capabilities. However, video game detractors point to information released by the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) regarding increased Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosis rates since 1997 with growth rates as high as 22% between 2003 and 2007. They argue that more and more children are being exposed to video games and more and more educators and parents are complaining that their children are unable to focus on things like classroom instruction the female orgasm and homework (Sucutti). What has been found, though, is that these child gamers’ brains, as well as the brains of their already adult counterparts, are very capable of focusing and they can maintain the same level of performance in what we find in many video games like World of Warcraft, much of the Final Fantasy series, and the previously mentioned first person shooters for hours. However, Gabe Zicherman, a leader in the development and application of “”gamification””, disagrees with such views. He suggests that it is adults that need to catch up and keep up with kids, not slow down kids to their slower pace.

Today’s kids play games in which they’re expected to chat in text and voice, operate a character, follow long and short term objectives, and deal with their parents interrupting them all the time to talk to them. Kids have to have an extraordinary multi-tasking skill to be able to achieve things today. It should then not be a surprise to discover that children who have become excellent learners in high-stimulus virtual environments may have trouble settling down into a sedate classroom with other children who are also conditioned to learning through video games. Tom Chatfield has written multiple articles and a book on how video games are the perfect education and motivation tools. He points out that children are constantly learning in a virtual environment where there are consequences to not accomplishing a task, losing a life, a tool, or not meeting a time requirement. There are also clearly stated rewards to completing the task as well as possible unexpected rewards that are doled out at calculated increments. Video game designers have been fine tweaking the ratio of difficulty, rewards and consequences to being a dumbass so that they know exactly how much to throw at a gamer at what level in each game in order to keep that person engaged and coming back for more. Educators could learn a lot from what these designers already know; children who are engaged and rewarded in an interactive learning process can and do give their entire attention and focus.

The fact that video games are a tool that can be used for education, and therefore do have an impact on the human brain, means we do need to be aware of what the potential negative impacts of those changes could be. What most every person has heard as an argument against video games is that they encourage violence and aggression in the people who play them. Multiple studies have been published on the topic, but when those studies have been reviewed and compared, it was found that they contradicted each other, and in many cases, used flawed methods to reach their conclusion regardless of the results. Christopher J. Ferguson with Texas A&M University used meta-analysis to review 12 studies available to him at the time of his publishing and found that researchers often used flawed methodology, drew conclusions that were not supported by their evidence, or in general could find no link between video games and violence. Holly Bowen and Julia Spaniol of the Dept. of Psychology with Ryerson University found that there is no indication that people who play violent video games have any long-term emotional desensitization to violence in their immediate surroundings. They do acknowledge that there may be a period immediately after playing these violent games that a gamer may be desensitized, but it is not an effect that could be attributed to an increase violence and aggressive behavior in those test subjects. Essentially, the evidence so far is showing that video games have a short-term impact on how people respond to violence and are likely desensitized to violence and possibly even reading for a short period after they play violent video games, but there is little evidence that there is a long-term impact. The heart of the argument against violent video games is based on the idea of a long-term, negative impact on gamers. Research just does not support that position.

Video games have become a part of our culture and a part of our lives in many ways. As a society we need to focus our energy and attention on is how to use them to make our lives better. We’ve already seen research that shows how video games can be used to help with several tasks with real world applications. We can use video games to increase our ability to track multiple objects and thus be able to monitor more of our surroundings while driving. They teach people how to be able to focus and maintain attention in situations where there is a lot of information to absorb in very short period of time. Video games can help us to better analyze what is going on around us and make quick decisions about the best action to take in a variety of situations. New research about the benefits of video games is coming out every year. It is time for us all to step forward and embrace the technology around us that has so many benefits and work together to mitigate the deficits that are present. Our society will not be ruined by this action, but will instead be enhanced further. There is one further thing we need to do. We need to sit down and pick up a controller. We leave ourselves at a disadvantage if we refuse to play out of false concerns regarding violence and aggression. Video games are a form of media that is often believed to be associated with negative health consequences. However, they are a great source of stress relief and improvement and development of mental health for social skills. They are engaging and immersive on a level different from traditional board games and other forms of entertainment. The player actively contributes to the level of satisfaction they attain because of the willingness to engage in the elements of the video game. The amount of play time can also be an important factor to the effects of playing certain games. In other words, excessive screen time can have its negative consequence, but if used correctly, video games possess advantages not present in other learning environments and can be a powerful tool to help children improve and develop life skills. Playing video games has become a normal part of childhood for many children and gaming in its proper manner can be healthy, fun, and educational to all ages.

250 Words Essay on Are Computer Games Good for Children’s

Computer games have become a significant part of children’s lives, offering a unique blend of entertainment, education, and skill development. However, the debate on their impact on children’s development is ongoing.

Beneficial Aspects of Computer Games

Contrary to the common belief, computer games can be beneficial. They enhance cognitive abilities, such as problem-solving and strategic thinking, as players are often required to think quickly and adapt to changing game environments. Additionally, educational games offer an interactive way to learn, making complex subjects more engaging.

Potential Drawbacks of Computer Games

Despite these advantages, excessive gaming can lead to negative outcomes. It can result in reduced physical activity, leading to health issues like obesity. Additionally, some games might expose children to inappropriate content, and excessive screen time can affect their eyesight.

In conclusion, computer games can be both beneficial and detrimental to children. The key lies in moderation and parental supervision. Thus, computer games can be a positive tool, provided they are used responsibly.

500 Words Essay on Are Computer Games Good for Children’s

Computer games have become an integral part of children’s lives. With the advent of technology, the debate on whether computer games are beneficial or detrimental to children’s development has become more heated. While some argue that these games foster creativity, problem-solving skills, and coordination, others assert that they promote violence, addiction, and social isolation.

The Positive Impacts of Computer Games

Computer games can be a potent tool for children’s cognitive development. They can enhance memory and concentration, as games often require players to remember complex rules, strategies, or the virtual maps of game environments. Simultaneously, games that involve multiple tasks promote multitasking skills and improve hand-eye coordination.

Moreover, computer games can foster problem-solving and strategic thinking. Complex games often present players with challenging situations that require critical thinking and swift decision-making. This can translate into real-life problem-solving skills.

Additionally, educational games provide an interactive learning environment, making learning more engaging and fun. They can reinforce what children learn at school, helping them grasp complex concepts more easily.

The Negative Impacts of Computer Games

Despite the potential benefits, computer games can have negative impacts. Excessive gaming can lead to addiction, causing children to spend less time on physical activities, studies, and social interactions. This can result in sedentary lifestyles, poor academic performance, and social isolation.

Furthermore, violent content in some games can potentially influence aggressive behavior in children. It’s crucial to monitor the type of games children play and limit exposure to violent content.

The Role of Parental Guidance

Parental guidance plays a significant role in mitigating the adverse effects of computer games. Parents should monitor the content of games, ensuring they are age-appropriate and educational. Setting time limits for gaming and encouraging a balanced lifestyle with ample physical activity can prevent addiction.

In conclusion, computer games can have both positive and negative impacts on children. They can foster cognitive skills and make learning enjoyable, but they can also lead to addiction and exposure to inappropriate content. Therefore, the key lies in moderation and guidance. With proper supervision and the right choice of games, computer games can indeed be a beneficial tool for children’s development.

Persuasive Essay: Video Games

Teenagers today often spend a great deal of time playing video games. These games are fun and engaging and young people often feel like playing games is a great thing to do in their spare time. However, you shouldn’t spend too much time gaming and there are a number of reasons for this: it’s unhealthy, you should spend more time studying, and you need to socialize more.

The primary reason to cut down on gaming time has to be that youths that spend a long time on computers and games consoles are often not getting enough exercise. With high obesity rates, it’s very important for young people to spend as much time being active as possible, especially since studies show that people who are overweight during childhood and adolescence are far more likely to become overweight adults than those of a healthy weight when they’re young. There is just as much, if not more, fun to be had in getting out and about and being active. This doesn’t have to mean going for long runs if that’s not your thing; team sports are both fun and great exercise. Dance or fitness classes are also a good option for those not into sports.

Secondly, getting a good education is that best thing that you can do for your future. If every teenager cut down on their gaming time by 30 minutes per day and used this time to study, the whole of that generation would achieve better results and be more likely to have the career that they want. With education, you get out what you put in, so it’s really up to you to put in the additional effort. If you want to go to a good college, extra study in your own time will be completely vital, but gaming can reduce your concentration span and make this more difficult.

The third main reason that playing video games too often is that it’s no good for your social skills. Some teenagers may argue that because they can now play their games online with friends, they are socializing in their own way. However, you can’t beat face-to-face contact, and if you want to succeed in interviews and build good relationships in later life, you need to develop some proper communication skills. This shouldn’t be a chore, or difficult, because hanging out with friends is far more fun than sitting indoors playing on games all day anyway!

In conclusion, there can be no doubt that spending too much time gaming isn’t good for you. You don’t have to stop all together, but it’s all about moderation. Cut down and allocate your additional free time to doing things that are good for you, and you definitely won’t regret it in later life.

15 Surprising Benefits of Playing Video Games

By editorial staff | mar 9, 2023, 2:07 pm est.

Video games are (sometimes) good for you.

Complex, challenging, and ambitious, video games have come a long way since the simple arcade titles of the 1970s—and evidence is mounting that the benefits of play go well beyond entertainment and improved hand-eye coordination. Here are 15 ways games are programming better people.

1. Video games are producing better surgeons.

Clement Clem Desplanches is pictured to illustrate a fact about video games

While you may think you want your surgeon reading up on the latest medical research instead of playing games, you might want to reconsider: a study of laparoscopic (small incision) specialists found that those who played for more than three hours per week made 32 percent fewer errors during practice procedures compared to their non-gaming counterparts.

2. Video games could help people overcome dyslexia.

A video game controller is pictured

Some research points to attention difficulties as being a key component of dyslexia. One study has shown people with dyslexia improved their reading comprehension following sessions of games heavy on action. The reason , researchers believe, is that the games have constantly changing environments that require intense focus.

3. Video games could improve your vision.

Angelika Angelka Kozlowska is pictured to illustrate a fact about video games

“Don’t sit too close to the television” used to be a common parental refrain without a lot of science to back it up. Instead, scientists are discovering games in moderation may actually improve—not strain—your vision. In one study , 10 weeks of play was associated with a greater ability to discern between different shades of gray. Another had participants try to play games using only their “lazy” eye, with the “good” one obscured. Those players showed significant, sometimes normalized improvement in the affected eye.

4. Video games could help make you a better leader.

Ilya Osipov Monesy is pictured to illustrate a fact about video games

Because certain genres of games reward and encourage leadership traits—providing for “communities,” securing their safety, etc.—researchers have noted that players can display a correlating motivation in their real-world career goals. Improvising in a game can also translate into being faster on your feet when an office crisis crops up.

5. Video games could pique your interest in history.

Two people playing video games are pictured

Many games use actual historical events to drive their stories. Those characters and places can then spark a child’s interest in discovering more about the culture they’re immersed in, according to researchers.

More Articles About Video Games:

6. Video games can make kids more active.

Kids are pictured playing a video game

Some games promote a whole-body level of interaction, and those can lead to physical activity. Sports games that involve basketball, tennis, or even skateboarding can lead to children practicing those same skills outdoors.

7. Video games might slow down the aging process.

London Film And Comic Con 2019

So-called “brain games” involving problem-solving, memory, and puzzle components have been shown to have a positive benefit on older players. In one study , just 10 hours of play led to increased cognitive functioning in participants 50 and older—improvement that lasted for several years.

8. Video games might help ease pain.

Video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto is pictured with Mario

It’s common to try to distract ourselves from pain by paying attention to something else or focusing on other body mechanisms, which is one way video games might help us following an injury. In one study , participants were able to keep their hand immersed in cold water longer when playing a game compared to those watching television—a passive distraction. The more immersive, the better—which is why pending virtual reality systems may one day be as prevalent in hospitals as hand sanitizer.

9. Video games can help you make new social connections.

Video game players are pictured

Gamers are sometimes stigmatized as being too insulated, but the opposite is actually true. The rise of multi-player experiences online has given way to a new form of socializing in which players work together to solve problems. But studies have shown games can also be the catalyst for friends to gather in person: roughly 70 percent of all players play with friends at least some of the time.

10. Video games can help improve balance in people with multiple sclerosis.

A video game is pictured

Since it is a disorder affecting multiple nerves, multiple sclerosis patients often have problems with their balance. One study showed that MS patients who played games requiring physical interaction while standing on a balance board displayed improvement afterward.

11. They can improve your decision-making skills.

A video game player is pictured

We all know someone who seems to have a faster CPU than the rest of us, able to retrieve information or react in a split second. For some, that ability might be strengthened through gaming. Because new information is constantly being displayed during play, players are forced to adapt quickly. In one study , players who were immersed in fast-paced games were 25 percent faster in reacting to questions about an image they had just seen compared to non-players.

12. Video games can curb cravings.

The 'Grand Theft Auto IV' video game is pictured

Players preoccupied with indulging in overeating, smoking, or drinking might be best served by reaching for a controller instead. A university study revealed a 24 percent reduction in desire for their vice of choice after playing Tetris compared to participants who were told to play but had to watch the game try to load instead.

13. Video games can reduce stress.

A video game player is pictured

While some games are thought to induce stress—especially when you see your character struck down for the umpteenth time—the opposite can be true. One study [ PDF ] that tracked players and measured heart rate found that players enjoyed decreased stress.

14. Gamers might be less likely to bully.

A video game controller is pictured

Though the stance is controversial, some researchers have asserted that action games may reduce a bully’s motivation to—well, bully. One study that had players assume the role of both the hero and villain showed that those controlling the bad guy’s behaviors displayed a greater sense of remorse over their actions.

15. Video games can help address autism.

A person playing video games is pictured

Gamers using systems that incorporate the entire body to control onscreen movement have been shown to be more engaged in celebrating victories with their peers, which runs counter to the lack of communication people with autism sometimes present. In one study, players with autism spectrum disorders were more inclined to socialize while playing an active (full body) game than if they were engaged in other types of play or playing with a stranger.

A version of this story ran in 2017; it has been updated for 2023.

My personal research question that I’m interested in is why are playing video games good for you? I’m particularly interested in this topic because there is so much research that says that video games and playing them can provide a wealth of benefits that most people would not think they would. Interestingly enough, there are more benefits to playing a video game then not and what some people don’t realize is that even though playing video games can come off as immature or a waste of time, that video game is teaching someone something important or improving something. The facts that I know I’ll need for this is different perspectives on what video games can do to the human mind not to mention how much they improve the brain. One such article is by Diana Rodriguez (2015) where she explains that, “kids aren’t the only ones to benefit from playing video games, older people (age 42-60) and even senior citizens are reaping the benefits of playing video games. Older people feel younger and more youthful than ever before not to mention that it improves their memory 70%” (Rodriguez, 2015).

There are so many things that video games can do for the human mind and everyone needs that brain power upgrade to be able to do things like think outside the box, explore different ways of doing common everyday things like taking out the garbage or recycling. I would also research how video games have helped humankind since their invention to further support my thesis of how video games are the greatest good and good for you, discussing this further will also allow people to see that video games are the world’s greatest treasures.

Another reason why I want to explore this topic further is because playing video games have gotten a lot of bad press from people who have had children die playing video games and the parents, naturally, want to blame the video game instead of their child. Parents who are anti-video game have argued that all video games were designed to do is to enslave children and take away their sense of self, the video game is “enslaving” children. Ha! I won’t invest too much of my time in trying to pay attention to such sanctimonious garbage. I will also be exploring how video games can and have improved the human body, playing video games has helped people who have felt that they were never going to do certain things again like walk, actually walk. To help my research further, I’ll refer to the article by Drew Guarini (2013) who explains that, “video games have given people even stroke victims the return of their memories as well as their bodily functions, certain victims of body atrophy have found that they can use certain parts of their bodies that they couldn’t before” (Guarini, 2013).

I could say all day long that the only real reason that I’m choosing to research video games and their benefits is because I’m an avid video game player that’s been reaping the benefits of playing video games for years; which is true for all intents and purposes. However, I mainly chose this topic because who better to tell the story of how video games are the greatest thing to happen to the world since cavemen discovered fire than me. I also chose this topic because there are certain people that need to know the real truth behind playing video games and how good they are for you. I was playing Tomb Raider: Underworld for 7 hours yesterday and after I quit playing it, I did a crossword puzzle. I completed it under 2 minutes, and I felt like I could’ve kept going; I almost did!

In conclusion, the wealth of benefits of playing video games is the reason I chose this topic, video games help people but more importantly, help people live longer.

Sample essay

Children who spend a great deal of time playing computer games are not doing themselves a service. This, however, does not mean that computer games are totally bad. They help the development of children in many ways. They also do some harm.

There are several benefits to playing computer games. Computer games help children think quickly and maintain higher levels of concentration for longer periods. Children who play games tend to enjoy better hand-eye coordination. Some studies have shown that children suffering from dyslexia can improve their reading skills by playing action-packed computer games that require intense focus. Contrary to popular belief, computer games can promote physical activity among children. Children who play video games that involve tennis, cricket, football or basketball are more likely to play these games outdoors. Computer games may also improve memory and other cognitive skills. Puzzle games, for example, may improve brain function in children.

On the flip side, computer games have their fair share of disadvantages. If children play games on their computer for hours on end, their eyesight may suffer. Their brains may find it difficult to process rapidly moving visuals. Worse still, computer games promote a sedentary lifestyle. Playing a game using a handheld device does not require the child to be physically active. Physical activity is essential for the overall development of children. If they spend hours in front of a computer playing games, their physical and emotional development will suffer. Violent games may also promote violence among children.

To conclude, there are several advantages and disadvantages to playing computer games; therefore, I don’t agree with the argument that computer games are bad by all means. Children should be allowed to play video games for an hour or so every other day. Parents should help them choose the right games and ensure that they are not spending their entire day in front of the computer.
