PhD Admission Requirements

The goal of the Accounting PhD program is to train students to do rigorous research in accounting, a specialized area of financial economics. An institutional understanding of how accounting information is used by capital market participants and/or within firms is useful and best obtained through relevant work experience, but is not required. The program is highly analytical and quantitative. Thus, a strong undergraduate preparation in microeconomics and mathematics is an advantage, as is some prior training at the undergraduate or graduate level in accounting, finance, or economics.

Except for the GMAT or GRE general test which is required of all applicants, there are no formal admission requirements. The TOEFL test must be taken by applicants whose native language is not English.

Road map to applying for a doctorate in accounting

Finding the right school is only half the battle..

Pursuing a doctorate in accounting can be an exciting and highly rewarding journey. However, especially if you're more accustomed to applying for jobs than to graduate programs, the application process can seem bewildering. It may be more time - consuming and require more preparation than anticipated.

This article can serve as your road map, making you aware of the possible roadblocks, speed bumps, and even the burnout you may encounter along the way (see the sidebar "Tips for Preventing Burnout" below). We outline the process of choosing schools to apply to, getting all your materials ready for application, and planning your time so you can meet the application deadlines. This guide is intended to help you navigate the highly competitive application process and position yourself as a prime candidate for consideration.

ROUTE PLANNING: CHOOSING THE TYPE OF DEGREE TO PURSUE

After you've made the decision to pursue a doctorate in accounting, the next choice you must make is which type of doctorate you want: a Ph.D. in accounting or a doctorate in business administration (DBA) with a concentration in accounting. Traditional accounting Ph.D. programs require full - time residency and consist of face - to - face instruction in a campus classroom. In these programs, tuition is usually waived, and students receive a stipend in exchange for working as a research or teaching assistant.

Nontraditional DBA programs may be conducted completely online or can be "hybrid" programs, where most instruction takes place online, but students are also required to be on campus multiple times throughout the program. One advantage of nontraditional programs is they allow you to pursue a degree while continuing to work, although some students may have difficulty balancing the demands of the program with the demands of their job (see the sidebar "Doctoral Programs for Practitioners" below). A drawback is that the cost of such programs can be quite high ($40,000 to $120,000) compared with the cost of traditional accounting Ph.D. programs. Also, note that having a DBA can affect the types of schools that will hire you as a faculty member, as many larger, research - focused schools prefer or even require candidates to hold a Ph.D. This may not be a problem if you plan to teach at a smaller or teaching - focused school.

CHOOSING SCHOOLS TO APPLY TO

After you determine which type of degree you want to pursue, you will then need to decide which schools to apply to. It is important to keep in mind that most schools accept only a handful of applicants each year. To increase your chances of acceptance into a program, you should apply to at least six to eight schools.

Consider some of the following factors when making this decision:

Accreditation

A school's accreditation status could affect your viability as a candidate for a faculty position. In the United States there are two main types of accreditation: regional and specialized. Regional accreditation applies to the school as a whole, whereas specialized accreditation applies to specific programs within the school. Accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) is widely considered the highest standard of accreditation for business schools, and many schools require faculty applicants to possess a Ph.D. or doctorate degree from an AACSB - accredited institution (see the box, "Helpful Resources").

Your future career plans

Consider also where you would like to work after graduation. If you are looking for a position at a research - intensive school, choose a graduate program with a strong reputation for research. Also, note that graduates of a school's accounting Ph.D. program typically do not find their first positions at the school from which they received their Ph.D. Thus, if you know that you would like to work at XYZ University immediately after you finish your Ph.D., you should probably not apply to that school's Ph.D. program.

Your research interests

Explore the type of work your prospective schools' faculties engage in, both the research areas they tend to specialize in (e.g., audit, tax, financial accounting, governmental/ not - for - profit accounting, management accounting, accounting history, etc.) and the research methods (behavioral or archival) they tend to use. This is an important step even if you're not yet sure what type of research you want to engage in, because later in your career you will be expected to develop research interests.

If you find that no one at the school does research you are interested in, or that most of the faculty is engaged in research in areas or methods that don't appeal to you, then that school will probably not be a good fit.

Additional factors

Other factors to consider include location, culture, and reputation. Depending on your situation, a school's location may be a major factor in choosing whether to apply to it. To determine whether a school would be a good cultural fit, consider reaching out to the program's coordinator, current students, or recent graduates. You can usually find their names and contact information on the program's website.

A program's research reputation can be an important factor in your application decision. To get a sense of the school's general and research reputation, speak with the program's coordinator and examine the program's website for listings of faculty publications, job placements of recent graduates, and mentions of its ranking in Public Accounting Report 's Annual Professors Survey. (In this survey, which requires paid access, accounting faculty rank the best accounting doctoral programs in the country.) Additionally, you may want to view Brigham Young University's yearly accounting research rankings.

ROADBLOCKS: APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS AND LOGISTICS

Your application journey may come to a quick end if you encounter certain roadblocks that prevent you from applying to or being accepted into a program. Read prospective schools' admission requirements carefully, and be especially mindful of the following:

Required classes, degrees, and/or work experience

Some schools either require or strongly recommend having certain prerequisite classes (e.g., calculus, linear algebra, and microeconomic theory), a master's degree in business or accounting, or one or more years of work experience.

Most Ph.D. programs require applicants to provide their Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores. If you have previously taken the GMAT, make sure your score is recent. If you took the test more than five years ago, you will need to retake it.

Studying for the GMAT is important to optimize your chances of being accepted into a program. While minimum score requirements can be in the low to mid - 600s , several schools note on their websites that the average scores of students accepted into the program are 700 or above.

Be aware of application deadlines. Priority deadlines for most Ph.D. programs are in December or January prior to the fall semester of entrance.

Whether a school is accepting doctoral students in a given year

You may find that some schools are not accepting applications to their doctoral program for the upcoming school year because they lack the resources to support doctoral students.

SPEED BUMPS: ALLOW AMPLE TIME TO COMPLETE YOUR APPLICATION

Beware of speed bumps that can slow your application journey. It's advisable to start planning the application process a year in advance. Most schools require the following application materials, all of which can take weeks or even months to compile or obtain:

Recommendation letters

Most schools require two or three letters of reference, and many specify that some or all must be academic references. Depending on how long you have been out of contact with your references, it may take a bit of research and time to find their current contact information and to hear back from them.

Transcripts

Schools will require transcripts from undergraduate and graduate schools you previously attended. Note that transcript processing and delivery time can vary depending on the mode of delivery, holds on your account, and the length of time since graduation.

GMAT scores

You can take the GMAT only once every 16 calendar days, five times within a 12 - month period, and eight times total in your lifetime. Plan accordingly so you can submit or update your GMAT score before your application is due.

If it has been a while since you last updated your r é sumé, you may need some time to research items such as official job duties, dates of service, and reference contact information.

Most schools require applicants to provide a written personal statement and may request additional essays as well. The personal statement is a very important piece of the application process in which you attempt to "sell" yourself to the school; therefore, it is a good idea to put a lot of time and thought into your responses and to hire an editor to read over your responses and provide feedback. Typographical errors, poor grammar, or a lack of enthusiasm are likely to leave a bad impression on the application reviewers.

The application process is a critical phase in your journey to a doctorate, and it presents many challenges. We hope the tips provided in this article will help keep you on course and prevent you from encountering unwelcome surprises while navigating the application process. Proper planning, preparation, and knowledge can help you achieve your dream of receiving a doctorate in accounting.

Tips for preventing burnout

The process of applying to a Ph.D. program can sometimes feel overwhelming. Here are some ways to alleviate the stress:

Talk to accounting professors about their Ph.D. experience

Most professors would be happy to speak with you about their doctoral journey, including the application process. You are likely to find that they, too, encountered some speed bumps and roadblocks along the way, and they may be able to give you advice.

Stay organized

If you are applying to several schools, it can be difficult to keep up with each program's requirements. A good way to manage this is to keep an Excel spreadsheet or a checklist of each school's requirements and due dates. That way you can check off what you have completed as you go and not worry about forgetting any components.

This help can come in the form of GMAT study courses, having a friend or editor review your essays and r é sumé, or speaking with your target schools' Ph.D. program coordinators for advice (e.g., they may advise you to submit your materials by a certain date to be among the first considered, or to consider retaking the GMAT to increase your chances of acceptance).

Be aware of alternative teaching routes

You don't always need a doctorate to teach at the college level. Many schools require only a master's degree to teach as a part-time (adjunct) lecturer or as a full-time nontenure-track instructor.

Seasoned accounting professionals interested in transitioning from practice to the classroom may consider the AACSB Bridge Program. The Bridge Program is an intense weeklong program held annually at a participating university. Participants gain knowledge on topics such as managing the classroom, creating an engaging learning environment, and planning and delivering courses.

Doctoral programs for practitioners

A CPA with at least three years of professional accounting experience who would like to teach tax or audit at the university level should consider applying to the Accounting Doctoral Scholars (ADS) Program ( adsphd.org ). The ADS Program provides financial support for those pursuing a Ph.D. in accounting who have recent public accounting experience and plan to teach and do research in tax or audit at an AACSB-accredited university after graduation. Those selected for funding receive a total of $40,000 in supplemental payments upon reaching various milestones while pursuing a doctorate in accounting.

Practitioners can also consider participating in the AACSB Bridge Program, an initiative that helps practitioners transition to the classroom and learn teaching and classroom management skills. Visit aacsb.edu/events/bridgeprogram for more information.

Department of Accounting & MIS Admission & Application Information

We select our students on the basis of qualities that are most favorable for achieving a high-level career as a researcher and teacher. The Ph.D. program is designed for full-time students, with admitted students beginning the program in the autumn semester. To enter the program you must be accepted by the graduate Accounting & MIS faculty, in addition to the university and the Graduate School. Applications are processed by the Fisher College of Business Graduate Programs Office.

Applicants may submit either a GMAT or GRE score, but the accounting and MIS graduate faculty strongly prefer that applicants take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). For more information on the GMAT (including registration, etc.), go to mba.com . We cannot accept an applicant without a minimum test score of 600, even though other application materials indicate academic success.

• To report your GMAT score to the AMIS PhD program, use institution code ZLJ-9D-02.
• To report your GRE score to the AMIS PhD program, use institution code 1592.

If your native language is not English, the university requires you to provide proof of English proficiency . This requirement is waived for applicants with a bachelor’s degree or higher from the United States or one of the other countries listed under Exemptions .

The admissions process is competitive, with 1-3 students joining the program each year.  While admission decisions are based on candidates’ overall applications, the most important items in your application package are your scholarship record as indicated by your standardized test scores (admitted applicants almost always have a total GMAT score above 700), your most recent coursework at the undergraduate or graduate level, and the quality of your recommendations. We encourage outstanding students with a bachelor's degree to enter the Ph.D. program directly. Such students may earn a master's degree while in the Ph.D. program.

Recent course work in economic theory, statistics, mathematics, and (possibly) organization theory and behavioral science, in addition to accounting and computer science, is especially helpful. Able students without such course work, as well as those without a strong background in accounting or MIS, may be admitted if they have a strong background in quantitative disciplines.

The University of Oklahoma's Steed School of Accounting evaluates each applicant individually in order to select for admission those applicants with the aptitude, scholarship, and analytical skills necessary to successfully complete an advanced degree. Most applicants (recent graduates with up to a few years of work experience) are generally required to submit the following materials in order to be considered for admission.  

• Transcripts of prior undergraduate and graduate coursework
• Graduate admission exam scores (typically GMAT, see following paragraph for possible exception)
• Three letters of recommendation
• Scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and Test of Spoken English (TSE) for applicants from non-English speaking nations
• Statement of your reasons for pursuing a doctorate specializing in Accounting and why you chose to apply to the University of Oklahoma.

Under extraordinary circumstances, such as when the applicant has remarkable academic or work experience, we may use other demonstrated qualifications to determine eligibility for admission and may waive the GMAT requirement.  Contact the PhD coordinator if you think this may apply to you.

The application deadline is January 15. Applications after this date will be considered on a space available basis.  After reviewing applications, the final part of the selection process involves inviting a small set of strong applicants for a campus visit to meet with faculty and doctoral students to ensure a program fit.

GMAT, GPA and TOEFL Expectations

While the Steed School of Accounting does not have specific admission requirements (e.g. minimum GMAT score/GPA), admission is highly competitive. The PhD Committee, comprised of members of the accounting faculty, recommends admission on the basis of the total application.  Applicants to our PhD program provide application materials including: past degree(s), GPA, a graduate entrance exam score (typically GMAT), letters of recommendation, and a personal statement.  As indicated above, we may, under extraordinary circumstances, consider applicants for admission with other demonstrated qualifications.

• Hold a Master of Science (MSc), a Master of Business Administration (MBA), a graduate degree in a related field or a degree deemed equivalent by the program administration, with an average deemed excellent by the School.
• TAGE MAGE (a minimum score is required: 283; for information purposes, note that the average score of applicants recently admitted to the program is 336)
• GMAT (no minimum overall score required; for information purposes, note that the average score of applicants recently admitted to the program is 690)
• GRE (no minimum overall score required; for information purposes, note that the average score of applicants recently admitted to the program is a 690 on the GMAT)

Language requirements

• Advanced proficiency in French or English.

For example, you must have completed 3 years (90 credits) of university studies entirely in French or English or have passed an accredited language test ( TFI : 850 or TOEFL : a score of at least 100).

PhD in Finance - Admissions

The Finance PhD program seeks to admit students with the highest possible aptitude and potential for academic careers. Admission is based on the applicant’s background and accomplishments, potential for academic and professional success, stated educational and professional goals, and letters of recommendation. Decisions are made by a faculty committee and depend upon available space and the qualifications of the other applicants.

Admission Requirements

Minimum requirements for admission are as follows:

• Completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited U.S. institution or its equivalent from a university in another country.
• The minimum acceptable grade point average for admission is a 3.0 average (A = 4.0) in the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework and in all graduate coursework.
• Acceptable scores on the verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). While there is no required minimum score, the average score of students admitted in recent years is over 700. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE), with an average quantitative score being 160, is accepted as a substitute for the GMAT. GRE scores are reported electronically by the Electronic Testing Service (ETS).  Please self-report your score on your application and request ETS to report your score electronically to the University of Illinois (Institution Code 1836, Department Code 4102).
• International applicants from countries whose first language is not English are required to submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Certain international applicants are exempt from the TOEFL requirement. Please see English Proficiency Requirements for details.
• IELTS is jointly owned by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), British Council and IDP Education Australia: IELTS Australia.

Can i apply for the spring semester.

No. Admission to the Ph.D. program is only offered for the Fall semester.

Are all international applicants required to submit TOEFL scores?

• International applicants are required to submit results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), unless they satisfy one of the conditions for exemption listed below. Applicants are exempt from the TOEFL requirement if one or both of the following conditions are met:
• The applicant has completed at least two academic years of full-time study (as defined by the home institution) within five years of the beginning of the proposed term of enrollment, or the applicant has completed a graduate degree, in a country where English is the primary language and at a school where English is the primary language of instruction. That is, English must be both the language of the country and the language of instruction at the school.
• The applicant is from a country in which English is both the primary language and the official language. Please be aware that if you are admitted into the program you will be required to provide a TOEFL score in order to fulfill the TA requirement

Do you accept GRE scores in place of GMAT scores?

Yes, we accept GRE scores in place of GMAT scores.

How long does it take students to finish the program?

For most students, the program takes five years to complete.

Do I have to take the SPEAK test as part of the admission requirements?

The SPEAK test is not required for admission. However, international students must take the SPEAK test after they arrive on campus. (The University of Illinois requires that graduate students whose native language is not English pass the SPEAK test before they can be appointed as Teaching Assistants.) The Department of Finance makes arrangements for students to take this test on campus during the first year of the program.

Do you admit students who do not have a Master’s degree?

Yes, we admit students who do not have a Master’s degree. If admitted into the Finance PhD program, a Master’s degree can be earned, but students desiring a terminal masters degree are not admitted to the PhD program and should consider applying to the M.S. in Finance or the Masters of Business Administration.

Am I eligible to apply to the program?

If you have an undergraduate degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or the equivalent from a university in another country, you are eligible to apply.

In a typical year, how many people apply and how many are admitted?

In recent years, around 100 people applied for an entering class of 3 students.

Do you provide financial support?

All admitted students are offered a tuition waiver plus a living stipend for 5 years that is conditional on making normal academic progress and fulfilling their obligations as a research assistant (RA) or a teaching assistant (TA). First year students are assigned as 10-hour per week RAs. Typically, second, fourth, and fifth-year students are assigned as 20-hour per week RAs. Third-year students serve as TAs to fulfill the program requirement that they obtain teaching experience.

Are international students eligible for scholarships or financial aid?

Admitted students receive financial support, regardless of nationality.

How long will it take before I am notified of the committee’s decision?

Applications are not reviewed until after the deadline date to apply. Please allow 3-4 weeks for a decision to be made. We will notify you of our decision via email.

May I submit unofficial or non-certified copies of my transcripts and degree certifications?

Official transcripts and degree certifications are only required if admitted into the PhD program.

I received my admission letter and I am admitted on limited status. What does that mean?

You may be admitted on limited status for a variety of reasons. The admission letter will clearly indicate the admission terms and the steps that need to be completed before full-admission status can be obtained. Some possible reasons for limited-status admission are:

• admission has been granted as long as a minimum grade-point average is maintained,
• non-native English speakers admitted with TOEFL scores below 103 or below 7.0 on the IElTS are required to complete an English Placement Test prior to their first semester of classes. If you are admitted on limited status you will be allowed to enroll for the first semester. You must satisfy whatever restriction is indicated in your admission letter to continue in the program.

Do I have to provide the proof of funding?

No, applicants do not need to provide the proof of funding. Students admitted into our Finance PhD Program receive a waiver of tuition and most fees, along with a living stipend. Students are still responsible for a small portion of fees, typically less than $1,000.

Do you recommend preparatory math classes?

Our program is heavily quantitative, so our admissions committee will want to see competency in this area.

Can I waive the GMAT/GRE requirement?

No. The GMAT/GRE test scores are a strong indication of the quantitative and verbal skills of an applicant. While the committee considers the composite application of each applicant, an official GMAT or GRE score must be included.

How can I order my official test score reports?

You can request your official test scores for the TOEFL and the GRE from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Applicants to the PhD program should request their scores be sent to Institution Code #1836; Department Code 00 or 02 – all department codes populate the campus score database. Please note, this is an undergraduate code; however, it does populate all campus test score databases.

GMAT scores are provided by PearsonVue. Scores should be sent to the PhD program using the code VKR-TK-03.

May I come in for an interview?

Interviews are conducted on an invitation-only basis. Please refrain from calling or emailing the PhD office to request an interview. You will be contacted by the PhD committee if an interview is necessary to make a decision on your application.

Who should write recommendation letters?

Your recommendation letters should come from academic and business sources. These recommendations should emphasize your strengths in the following areas: quantitative and analytical analysis, written and oral communication, research potential, and relevant work experience.

How do I make a change on my application once it has been sent?

Once your application is submitted you cannot make changes online. Email [email protected] to let us know if any changes that need to be done or documents that need to be uploaded to your file.

What are GRE Waivers?

Some business schools do accept GRE scores. However, if you are applying only to business programs, you should opt for the GMAT.

To some faculty, GRE scores carry a lot of weight. Therefore, high marks on this test may elevate you in their eyes. In other words, even if the GRE is optional, furnishing a good score may be beneficial.

Accredited Universities Offer No GRE PhD Programs

Not having GRE requirements is not a sign that a program will be weak or substandard. Many respected, accredited programs don’t require that you take this test before you can be admitted.

Instead of using GRE requirements to evaluate a school’s strength, consider whether the program has received accreditation. Also, gather reviews from current or recent students, and get advice from the school’s graduate coordinator.

You Still Have to Meet Other Admissions Standards

All PhD programs are selective about their candidates. So, whether or not they require that you submit GRE scores, they all have admissions requirements that you must meet in order to get into the school.

Other factors considered for acceptance may include:

• Your resume

Within the School of Business, admission decisions are made by the faculty in the applicant’s area of concentration. Applicants must specify an intended area of concentration, Accounting , Finance , Management , Marketing , or Operations and Information Management .

Application Deadlines

Business PhD applications are open. For full consideration, and to allow time for competitive scholarship nomination, apply by December 15.

Application Fee

• The application fee is $75. This fee is nonrefundable and must be paid by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, or Discover).
• Application fees are waived for prospective students who are veterans, have attended the PhD Project, among others. Please contact the PhD office after the application has been initiated, but before submission.
• An application will not be officially received, and thereafter reviewed by the admissions committee, if the application fee has not been paid.
• Please select “Field of Study and Degree” as Business Administration (Ph.D.).
• “Concentration” is the department (Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management, Operations Information Management) you are interested in.

Statement of Purpose

• Write an essay describing your main strengths and why you wish to undertake a doctoral program in your intended area of concentration.
• As part of this essay, also describe how the doctoral program fits into your long-term interests and objectives. (No required page length)
• UPLOAD to the online application.

Current Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Three letters of recommendation.

• To the extent possible, these letters should be from academic faculty, and should comment on the applicant’s potential for intensive doctoral studies, ability and motivation for scholarly research, and teaching capacity. Letters should be prepared on letterhead. There is no specific form.
• Each recommender will UPLOAD recommendation to the online application. Instructions provided on the application.

Official GMAT or GRE scores (*preferred)

Supervisors are arranged after successful completion of the Comprehensive Examination near the end of the second year of study.  Please do not contact faculty members prior to admission to ask for supervision.

If you apply under one of University of Waterloo's International agreements and sponsorships  please review Waterloo's sponsorship requirements which are an important part of your application process.  Indicate which international agreement you will be funded by in your application.

A non-refundable application fee of $125 CDN must be submitted with your application. Apply online through Graduate Studies .

One or two business days after you complete your online application , you will receive an email with instructions to upload your materials to Applicant Quest (Waterloo’s self-service application system).

The following materials must be uploaded for your application to be complete:

• Transcripts Transcripts and awarding of degrees from each institution attended.
• References (3) Your application package will be stronger if you choose referees who can comment on your academic/research ability.  Your references will be sent an e-mail with instructions about uploading their letters.
• Supplementary information A statement of interest (one page or less) indicating why you wish to take a PhD in accounting and what you hope to accomplish.

Tuition fees are approximately $8,516 per year for Canadian citizens and permanent residents and $24,697 per year for holders of student visas.

“Fees listed below are based on the 2021-22 fees.  Tuition amounts have been approved; incidental fees are subject to change pending approval of the Board of Governors”.

We provide domestic students admitted into our program with four years of funding at $26,000 per year. Funding is conditional on meeting minimum academic and program requirements, including working 10 hours per week as a research assistant or teaching assistant.  Last year students in our program received appoximately $7,000 above our minimum funding package.

We do not require students to teach courses while they are in the program, but try to accommodate students wishing to gain teaching experience.

We encourage students to apply for additional sources of external funding , some of which have fall deadlines.

We encourage students from various backgrounds, including economics, mathematics, statistics, behavioural science, and related disciplines, to apply. Admissions will not be confined to those with a background in accounting, commerce, or business administration. We will consider applicants who have successfully completed a master's or honours bachelor's degree, with at least an 80% average.

Due to the emphasis on social science methodology in our PhD program, we prefer that applicants have satisfactorily completed at least one university-level course in calculus and one university-level course in linear algebra. These should be courses for science or math students rather than business students since the training in mathematical logic and proofs found in the former type of courses is important to success in our program.

We may offer conditional acceptance into the program for students without these math courses. Students take the needed courses in the spring term (May to August) preceding entrance into the program. We recommend University of Waterloo courses Mathematics (MATH) 106 and MATH 127 , available either in class or by distance education, as suitable options.

Due to funding restrictions we are unable to accept international students at this time unless they were to come with funding in hand.  Proof of funding would be required.  

English language proficiency.

The official language of instruction at the University of Waterloo is English. It is the responsibility of the University to ensure that its graduate students have sufficient English language skills to be successful with the demands of the academic environment.

You are exempt from submitting an English language proficiency examination score if any one of the following conditions is true: 

• You have completed three or more years of post-secondary education or completed a graduate degree at a Canadian institution or university
• You have completed three or more years of post-secondary education or completed a graduate degree at a university at which English was the primary language of instruction, as indicated on our ELP exemption list*
• You have been employed for at least three years in a position in which English was the language of business in a country listed on our ELP exemption list*

Tests must have been taken within the last 24 months at the time the application is submitted. Tests that do not appear on this chart are not accepted for admission consideration. The University of Waterloo reserves the right to request an English language test result from any applicant.

Instead of a GMAT score, this program relies on your application, resume, official transcripts, cover letter, references, and personal interview to decide if you are an appropriate candidate. Applicants are evaluated on their work experience, academic background, and leadership skills. However, if any of these areas are weak, the school may recommend a completed GMAT score to enhance your application.

2. Schulich School of Business – York University

At York University’s Schulich School of Business, the GMAT requirement for the full-time MBA program can be waived if you meet specific criteria. First, the student must have graduated from the Schulich BBA or iBBA programs within the last five years. Second, their GPA must have been an average of a B+ or higher. Under these two scenarios, a GMAT score is not required.

Ranked by  The Economist  as the second best program in Canada, the Schulich MBA is known for its flexible study options and extensive selection of specialization options. Students can choose between both full and part-time enrollment and 18 areas of study. Making this a uniquely customizable MBA.

Beyond waiving the GMAT, candidates interested in applying to Schulich must have at least two years of work experience and filled out an application that includes three essays, two videos, one resume, two references, and transcripts. Applications for entry for September 2019 have already begun with Round 2 on February 1, 2019, and Round 3 on March 15, 2019.

3. Lakehead University Thunder Bay and Orilla, ON

At Lakehead University, a GMAT score is not required for admissions to the MBA program if you successfully complete the Business Skills Development Program offered by the Faculty of Business Administration. This six-module program must be completed with a minimum average grade of 70 percent.

The full-time MBA program at Lakehead University is one year in length—three terms—and provides students with a comprehensive and integrated knowledge of business and management. Students will develop their analytical, decision-making, and communication skills throughout the course of the program.

Beyond the GMAT replacement modules, students must fill out a completed application to be considered. This application includes official transcripts, references, and a statement of academic intent.

4. Thompson Rivers University Business and Economics

At the Thompson Rivers University Business and Economics school, MBA candidates are not required to submit a GMAT score. It is a completely optional requirement that is to be used as supplementary information. Instead, to apply, students must focus on demonstrating their quantitative and computing skills through education and work experience.

The MBA program at TRU can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis. Full-time students graduate in two years, taking courses in managerial statistics, human resource management, strategic management information systems, and more. Part-time students can graduate in five years, though there is also an accelerated one-year program.

To apply to the TRU one-year MBA program, applicants must have completed a three or four-year undergraduate degree with a GPA of at least 3.0. Other application requirements include the TOEFL language test, IELTS test, or completion of the TRU ENGL 1100 course to demonstrate language proficiency.

5. New York Institute of Technology, Vancouver, BC

The New York Institute of Technology in Vancouver, BC offers both a  Management MBA  and a  Finance MBA  that do not require GMAT scores for admission. Instead, the GMAT is used as supplemental information only helpful if your score is satisfactory.

The Management MBA offered at NYIT is highly flexible with classes offered in New York, China, Abu Dhabi, and, of course, Vancouver. It’s an AACSB-accredited degree that offers students leadership and professional experience through coursework and participation in industry associations.

Other application information required by the New York Institute of Technology includes an undergraduate degree from an accredited college, a 3.0 GPA, official transcripts, and a completed application.

PhD Management

Joint phd in management admission requirements and application procedures.

The program represents a number of innovations in doctoral work in the field of management. First, by cooperating, the four universities are able to make available to the program’s students a diverse pool of approximately 520 professors qualified to direct doctoral-level study and research. Second, the program has been carefully developed to encourage independent, creative work on the part of its students, with close, personal contact with the professors. This program will appeal especially to the mature, experienced candidate with relatively well-defined interests. Across the four member universities, some courses are offered in English and some in French (all papers may, however, be written in English or French).

The program places considerable emphasis on the theoretical foundations of management and its underlying disciplines. Graduates of the program are expected to have:  (1)  some knowledge of all the main areas of management,  (2)  a thorough knowledge of one applied area of management, and one support discipline,  (3)  a complete command of the research methodologies used in management, and  (4)  some familiarity with modern theories and methods of the pedagogy of management.

The program consists of three phases: preparation, specialization, and dissertation.

Preparation – Phase I

Before entering the program, the student will have selected the area of specialization from the following areas/options:

• Information Systems
• Operations Management
• Organizational Behaviour
• Retail Management
• Strategy and Organization

Specialization – Phase II

In Phase II, students probe deeply into their chosen area of specialization. With their Phase II Advisory Committee, students work out an individual program of study, which takes about 18 – 24 months. The phase focuses on a specialization area and a support field. The specialization area could be one of the basic ones listed in Phase I (for example, marketing or operations management), a sub-area within one of these (such as organizational development within organizational behaviour), or an interdisciplinary area that combines two or more of these (such as behaviour aspects of accounting or international marketing).

The support field is selected to help the student develop a foundation of knowledge in a fundamental discipline that underlies the theory in management. For example, a student in marketing might select psychology, sociology, or statistics. One in management policy might select political science or general systems theory, or perhaps even philosophy. Other choices are possible.

Students officially enter Phase II of the program when their Phase II Advisory Committee has been established and, together with the student, formally agrees on a proposal for the work to be done in Phase II. The Phase II Form (Advisory Committee) must be approved by the McGill and the Joint Doctoral Committees. This includes the following:

• Doctoral seminars in the specialization area; minimum four courses
• Seminar on Research Methodology (MGMT 707, 3 credits) or equivalent approved graduate-level course
• Seminar in Pedagogy (MGMT 706, 3 credits) or Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (EDPH 689, 3 credits)
• Comprehensive Examination (MGMT 701, 0 credits)
• A publishable research paper (MGMT 720, 3 credits)

The Phase II Advisory Committee will normally consist of at least three members; a supervisor and others decided upon jointly by the supervisor and the student. One of these members will typically come from the support field. Every student’s Phase II Advisory Committee must have representation from at least two universities in the joint program.

Dissertation – Phase III

In the third phase of the program, students research, write, and defend a dissertation that probes deeply into a well-defined research topic. The topic is developed with the Phase III Advisory Committee (at least three members), which may be the same as the Phase II Advisory Committee or may be reconstituted, again with representation from at least one of the other participating universities. The topic is approved formally by the Phase III Advisory Committee and, once the research is completed and the dissertation written, the student publicly defends the completed thesis. The Phase III Form (Phase III Advisory Committee) must be approved by the McGill and the Joint Doctoral Committees.

Admission Requirements

Candidates normally hold a master’s-level degree, with a strong academic record from a recognized university.

GMAT (or GRE–General Test) results are required for all applications to the doctoral program; this includes McGill master’s students applying to the Ph.D. The minimum GMAT (or GRE–General Test) score required is 70% equivalency. Tests must have been written within the past five years.

Applicants to graduate studies whose mother tongue is not English, and who have not completed an undergraduate or graduate degree from a recognized foreign institution where English is the language of instruction or from a recognized Canadian institution (anglophone or francophone), must submit documented proof of competency in oral and written English. Before acceptance, appropriate exam results must be submitted directly from the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing Systems) Office. Applications will not be considered if a TOEFL or IELTS test result is not available. A minimum score of 100 for the Internet-based test, with each component score not less than 20, is required for admission. A minimum score of 7 for IELTS is required. Tests must have been written within the past two years.

Files will not be considered unless GMAT (or GRE-General Test) and TOEFL scores are received by the Application Deadline.

PhD Without GRE

This increase comes from the fact that modern PhD programs that don’t require GRE scores might admit students on the merit of their work experience. That’s great news if you have been out of school and on-the-job.

Both online and traditional universities offer PhD No GRE programs. Here is a list of 19 of our partner grad schools that don’t require GRE scores for their doctoral programs. Plus, because the PhD is focused on developing you as an expert in a specific field, there are many subfields or concentrations available. This includes an  Early Childhood Education PhD  or an Industrial/Organizational PhD.

Online no GRE PhD Programs

A PhD is the academic equivalent of a marathon, with a broad array of courses that focus on research methods and analytic writing, and usually include regular meetings with mentors to discuss progress on your thesis.

An online PhD program typically allows at-work students to complete their courses on their own schedule. This takes away the hassle of relocation or the sacrifice to career and life’s other responsibilities. A no GRE PhD program offers fewer barriers to impede the finish line.

Many of the schools listed above offer online no GRE PhD programs. Sometimes there are built-in residencies, but these are usually pre-scheduled and brief. They typically add an element of interaction between students and faculty.

PhD Programs that don’t require GRE

Whether a PhD program requires the GRE (or GMAT) depends on the university, the discipline, and the specific department. Below are a few examples of PHD no GRE programs in different areas of study.

No GRE Business PhD Programs

Business PhD programs encompass the executive-focused  Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) and classic scholarly research-based PhD. Each of these terminal degrees could be earned in highly focused fields such as:

• Healthcare management
• The Walden University Self-Designed Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree online is built for experienced professionals who want a deeper point of view and to stay current with modern applied managerial theories. Walden offers a variety of DBA concentrations, including International Business and  Global Supply Chain Management .
• Chicago School of Professional Psychology offers an online PhD in Organizational Leadership with no GRE. • For those whose preference is testing hypotheses,  Walden University offers an online PhD in Clinical Psychology in addition to a variety of concentrations you can choose from in line with career goals. One example is their  PhD in Health Psychology  which combines courses in research methods with topics like bio-psychology and psychoneuroimmunology (PNI).
• Nova Southeastern University’s PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy is accredited by Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). It covers courses in lifespan, family systems theories, and counseling techniques for groups and individuals. There is also a teaching practicum and clinical practice on top of plenty of research.

No GRE PhD in Criminal Justice Programs

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Programs with No GRE

An alternative to the research-focused PhD in Nursing is the  Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP),

which aims to ready nurses as systems-level thinkers and leaders who are able to navigate key issues.

Patient safety, public health, health policy, performance improvement, and quality of care are some of these critical concerns. DNP students could also learn how to integrate nursing science with organizational leadership and ethics.

Instead of the GRE, applicants may need a masters degree with an advanced nursing practice and current U.S. RN license and certification in an advanced nursing practice role, if applicable. List of No GRE DNP Programs

Many nursing graduate schools have DNP programs – in fact these come in online, campus and sometimes blended (hybrid) formats. Accredited DNP programs may be approved by an agency such as the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Below is a list of 3 grad schools which offer DNP programs but don’t ask for GRE scores.

• Georgetown University ’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is designed to prepare registered nurses (RNs) as health care leaders with a holistic understanding of health.
• Andrews University offers three tracks for their DNP bridge programs, which allows students with an RN license but only an undergraduate degree to pursue a DNP. These programs include the BSN – DNP, MSN – DNP, and APRN – DNP tracks.
• Sacred Heart University offers an online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) designed to prepare you to transform practice, lead and engage in practical, clinically focused scholarship and research.

What is a GRE Waiver for PhD Programs

A GRE waiver is like a pass – it often trades in test scores for professional work experience to help determine how ready a candidate is for the academic rigors of a PhD.

GRE scores expire in five years from the time you take the test. So, if you took it some years ago, you may not want the added hurdle of a retake. Your years of hands-on practice – especially in the same field as the PhD – may be sufficient for a school to consider you for admission.

Applicants who require a waiver of the GRE generally need to consult the appropriate departmental Graduate Program Director to review specific program and university criteria. Check out sponsored programs below that don’t require GRE.

PhD Programs that may waive the GRE

Partner school  Temple University  may waive the GRE for eligible doctoral students. To earn their degree, those who enter with a Master’s degree typically need to complete 15 credits of PhD-level core coursework and 15 credits of PhD exams and dissertation research, for a total of 30 credits.

Some of the available PhD programs with GRE waivers at Temple include:

• PhD in Bioengineering: students conduct research at the crossroads of translational medicine and engineering. Innovate and explore areas such as neuro-engineering, stem and cancer cell engineering, tissue regeneration and more.
• PhD in Mechanical Engineering : students examine manufacturing mechanical systems, such as car airbag sensors or electric propulsion systems for space travel. Areas of potential research include material science, mechanics and robotics.

4 Reasons to Consider PhD Without GRE Programs

Finding a no GRE PhD program may be well worth the search for a lot of students. Here are four reasons to factor into your decision process.

1. The GRE’s Predictive Powers Are Limited

In recent years, the GRE has lost some of its control over the admissions process. In part, researchers have found the scores don’t predict how a student might fare as the program progresses because it wasn’t measure things such as finely-tuned instincts or how well a student collaborates with a lab partner. i

2. Accredited Universities Offer PhD Programs No GRE Required

It’s a fair question to wonder whether grad schools with PhD No GRE programs are accredited or set lower standards than those who ask for GRE test scores. You may want to do some digging – compare programs, find out what alumni report, and verify success rates.

Also, regional and professional accreditors require the school to undergo a periodic review, so they usually maintain a data base with this information.

3. Universities Use Other Admissions Requirements

Universities that offer PhD programs without GRE requirements might use alternative proof of thinking measures used to weed out applicants. Here are a few sample documents that applicants may need to tack onto a completed form and deposit.

• Masters or first professional degree (from a regionally accredited college/university)
• Minimum overall GPA – set by university
• Current letters of recommendation (3 – 5)
• Goals (why and how this specific PhD program lines up with your goals)

4. A Masters Degree Might Suffice

Several PhD programs across the sciences, arts, and engineering require GRE scores of applicants with a bachelor’s degree or for those who did not complete a research thesis for their masters degree.

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a test that’s usually taken by students who are applying to get a doctoral degree or a master’s degree. The GRE tests your knowledge of math, critical thinking, and literacy, as well as an ability to reason. While these are viewed as skills that could indicate whether a student has the aptitude for analysis necessary in a PhD program, persons with a master’s degree and professional experience may be able to show they have these skills without need for GRE scores. As an example, the University of Fairfax requires applicants to the Doctorate of Information Assurance (DIA) program to have Masters and five years of relevant experience.

MS Business Analytics Application Deadlines & Requirements

Application deadlines.

• Apply by the priority deadline for first consideration for funding, an earlier admission decision, additional time to find housing, and, for international students, additional time to secure your visa.

• Your application is not considered complete until we have all the application materials (listed below).

Application Checklist

• Two semesters (or three quarters) of college-level calculus.
• One course in linear algebra or matrix methods.
• A basic knowledge of computer programing is not required for admission but must be acquired before starting the program. Examples of programming languages include: C, C++, Java, Matlab, Python, R, Ruby, SAS or Visual Basic.

Select the year in which you plan on entering the program. International students based abroad are only eligible to apply for full-time enrollment.  

Ensure your resume clearly lists the dates of any professional (ex: full-time role, internships, co-ops), volunteer, non-profit or any other leadership experiences. There is no formatting requirement, however, please review your resume for any grammar mistakes. It should be no longer than two pages.  

You must have a U.S. bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution, or the international equivalent, by the time of application. You can submit an unofficial copy of all of your undergraduate and graduate transcripts (and degree documents, if applicable) with your application, but official transcripts will be required if you’re accepted.  

If you are an international applicant, you may be required to submit a NACES-approved, course–by-course evaluation on your transcript. Please contact the Graduate Programs Office to see if this is a requirement for your program. 

Please complete the following prompts:

• Describe a situation in your life in which you have failed to achieve a goal. What did you learn from this experience? (Max. 400 words)
• You just entered the elevator with a member of the Applicant Review Committee for the MS in Business Analytics. You can only speak to this person for a very short time on the elevator. What would you say to this individual so that they would look favorably upon your application? (Max. 250 words)

Please select two recommenders who will be able to discuss your professional performance, academic performance and work style. This can include previous supervisors, faculty members or mentors. Letters of recommendations must come directly from the listed recommender on your application.

IMPORTANT : Your application will not move forward in the review process until we receive both letters of recommendation.

Test scores provide a measure of your capabilities for the admissions committee to consider in reviewing your application holistically. The admissions committee accepts the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test scores.

Waivers are considered on a case-by-case basis and must meet one or more of the following criteria: 

• You have completed a graduate degree in a relevant field. 
• You have graduated — or will have graduated — with a bachelor's degree from a United States AACSB-accredited business school with a 3.5 or higher GPA by the start of the program. 
• You have 4+ years of relevant work history.

Students are required to complete a virtual interview via the Kira Talent platform. The interview format consists of multiple mini-interviews (MMI).  

• U.S. Residents: $65
• International: $70

If your native language is not English, you must demonstrate your proficiency in English. This includes submitting an IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo test score. Please reference this page for information on the minimum score needed to be eligible for the program.

The program makes every effort to review and respond to applicants in a timely manner, typically within two to three weeks of the application being completed. During peak periods, or very early in the admission cycle, additional processing time may be needed.
