Here we’ll explore part-time PhD programs, compare schools, and see what earning your doctorate could do for you.

Part Time PhD Programs

If you’d like to earn your doctoral degree but don’t really have much time to spare, you might want to consider enrolling in one of the many available part-time PhD programs.

Editorial Listing ShortCode:

A part-time PhD program requires less of a time commitment, and there are both online and on-campus options.

Types of Part Time PhD Programs

The following are ten of the most popular part-time PhD programs people are enrolling in right now. Click on one to jump to that part of the page.

Business Administration

Healthcare administration, nurse practitioner (rn required), public administration, public health.

PhD graduates in these fields often enjoy very rewarding careers as professors, researchers, or industry experts.

project managers discussing financial reports

If you’re looking for part time graduate school programs in business, taking courses toward your PhD in Business Administration may be an excellent choice. In addition to being the gold standard of business degrees in America, this degree is often recognized globally as the highest possible business administration degree.

Some universities also offer the option to select an area of concentration in a part time PhD program. For example, you could opt to get your online PhD in Accounting , or a similar field of business, like marketing, human resources, or project management.

Depending on whether you take this degree online or at an on-campus university, your curriculum may be a little different, but the basic admissions requirements and courses will likely be quite similar whichever you choose.

For example, you’ll likely need, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in business administration, and a master’s degree in this field or another business-related field is usually preferred.

Some programs also have specific GMAT or GRE score requirements as well, though a growing number of universities are waiving this requirement.

A part time doctoral program in Business administration usually has some lecture courses and written coursework. Classes are mostly comprised of upper-level business classes in accounting, human resources management, project management, leadership, business innovations, and strategy.

Your primary focus, though, will probably be on independent research toward your final dissertation. This, along with a final exam, is usually the last step before earning a PhD. After receiving your PhD, you could potentially become a professor of business, a consultant for private companies or the government, or even a CEO or president of a company.

counselor talking to a client in her office

If you have an empathetic nature, a curious mind, a good listening ear, and the desire to genuinely help people, you might pursue a PhD in Counseling. PhD courses in the counseling field have been specifically tailored to do two things:

  • Help students obtain the skills needed to become counselors in practically any environment, including K-12 schools, institutions of higher learning, private practices, prisons, mental hospitals, and more.
  • Help students obtain the skills and knowledge needed to teach counseling skills to others as professors of counseling at institutes of higher learning.

The course curriculum for a counseling program is typically designed to educate students in a holistic, entire body approach to treating patients. Specific courses usually include higher-level classes in psychology, as well as counseling theories and techniques.

Other courses may cover holistic health and wellness, psychological techniques, and research. A heavy focus is often put on understanding patients of all races, backgrounds, genders, sexualities, and cultures.

In addition to lectures and seminars, you’ll probably be required to complete a lot of coursework and research.

If your ultimate goal with your PhD is to teach psychology at the post-secondary level, you may even be required to design and teach your own curriculum as part of a hands-on internship experience.

Your original dissertation will likely be your final step toward earning this PhD, after you which you could potentially teach or continue on in counseling.

If you’re considering a doctoral program in the education field, there are three different paths you can take. There’s the PhD path, which we’ll discuss here, and then there is the D.Ed. path and the Ed.D path, which are the Doctor of Education and Doctor in Education, respectively.

Earning a PhD in Education literally means you’ve received a Doctor of Philosophy in Education. (All PhDs are Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Only the specific field is different. This is why so much of their coursework focuses on research.)

Deciding whether or not a PhD is the right choice for you depends on what you want to do with it after you earn it. If you want to teach at the post-secondary level or work in educational research, then a PhD may be perfect for you.

The typical course format is a mixture of seminars, lectures, and coursework. As with practically any other PhD, your primary focus will likely be on independent research toward your dissertation, which should be a completely unique project of your choice relating to the field of education.

Your final project will probably consist of this dissertation presented before a panel of professionals in the field. You’ll likely be asked to deliver it and then defend it.

Some programs may also require you to pass a final exit exam. After you’ve earned your degree, you could potentially use it to become an educational researcher, professor of education, school administrator, superintendent, or other board of education member.

financial manager working on his laptop

If you have a mind for numbers, money, and budgeting or work on the books and assets side of a company, a doctoral degree in finance may help further your career.

Online coursework in a finance PhD program typically focuses most heavily on a wide variety of financial and budgetary classes. Some of these include:

  • Global Marketing
  • The Behavior of Finance Locally, Nationally, and Globally
  • Decision-making of Firms and Other Financial Institutions
  • Assets Pricing
  • Assets Valuation

For many, this is considered one of the best possible PhD programs to take online, and if you already have a background in finance, it could potentially be one of the shortest doctoral programs online for you. It also works well as an on-campus program.

In a typical finance program, most work is done through lectures, seminars, and hands-on experience, first developing and then rigorously testing theoretical models.

Upon earning your PhD in Finance, you should be able to pursue many different careers. You might become a compensation and/or benefits manager, chief financial officer, director of securities or commodities, financial manager, or budget analyst.

You may also be eligible for promotions of the highest level in budgeting, acquisitions, and sales. A PhD in Finance can help prepare you for a career as a high-level sales agent in almost any field.

As with most PhDs, what this degree is really designed to do is help you obtain the skills to teach a program in your subject of expertise, in this case, finance. For that reason, after earning your PhD, you may consider becoming a professor.

medical professor with his students working on an activity

If you’re planning to get your PhD in Healthcare Administration, there’s a strong possibility that you’re already working somewhere in the healthcare field, possibly even in healthcare administration.

This is because most PhD in Healthcare Administration programs are only open to those who already have master’s degrees in this same field or one that’s closely related to it.

There are even some programs that require you to already be working in healthcare administration before you can be accepted into their program.

If none of these things apply to you, this might not be the degree for you. If you do have your heart set on it anyway, then you’re probably going to have to put in quite a bit of extra work first.

In addition to the desire to help and heal people, possessing a good head for business, a love of research, and excellent people skills are beneficial for pursuing this degree. Being comfortable with economics, finance, accounting, and grant-writing is helpful as well.

This degree is usually sought by those who want to become professors of the subject at a university or those who want to move into upper-level management and leadership roles within large healthcare organizations.

Some of the most commonly shared classes between different healthcare administration PhD programs are related to research, communication, and organizational strategies. There are also seminars on healthcare reform and legislation, as well as the role of politics in healthcare.

team of professionals in a meeting

If your goal is to earn your PhD in Management, you have so many options. Other than doctoral programs in business and business administration, programs in management are some of the most numerous programs out there right now.

You likely have plenty of choices, whether you want to go the online or on-campus route.

Another great thing about a PhD degree program for management is that it has such wide-reaching possibilities. Whether you work in retail, factory work, or engineering, chances are you have a management team.

That’s because every field needs managers and supervisors. Therefore, a PhD in Management can appeal to many different types of people.

Possessing any of the following traits can help you in this path:

  • Hardworking
  • Research-minded
  • Good communicator
  • Multitasker
  • Fair leader

Courses in management are usually pretty fast-paced, and the subject matter is just as varied as the types of people who pursue the degree. Courses commonly incorporate classes on research skills, human resources management, social sciences, economics, strategic planning, and networking.

You’ll likely be required to research, put together, deliver, and defend a unique dissertation before you can officially earn your degree. Most programs require an exam, as well.

Once you’ve received your PhD in Management, though, potential job paths include management consultant, professor, CEO, entrepreneur, and more in a variety of different fields.

nurse talking with a doctor in a hospital

If you’re a nurse practitioner looking to become a better and higher-paid nurse, then you might not want to pursue your PhD in Nursing. Instead, you may want to work toward your Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).

However, if you’re a nurse practitioner who wants to transition into pure research, nursing theory, or the education and training of future nurses and nurse practitioners, a PhD may be the right choice for your needs.

Although a PhD in Nursing usually takes fewer years to earn than a DNP and requires almost no clinical work—unlike the DNP—you’ll likely be required to do massive amounts of research into the field of nursing, nursing theory, and nursing education processes.

The goal of most PhD in Nursing programs, in addition to teaching students what they need to know to educate future nurses, is to prepare students for careers in clinical research and education strategy. The aim is for them to be able to improve upon the research processes and education methods to make the training of future nurses more innovative and all-encompassing.

Less often, graduates of this program go on to work in advanced clinical practice or even healthcare administration, but this isn’t the most common career path for people receiving this particular degree. Many of the courses do focus on leadership and best management practices for those who do want to take this route, though.

financial managers checking documents

If your goal is to pursue a PhD in Public Administration, you have a wide variety of programs from which you can choose. Because regulations governing this type of degree program are looser than some other degree programs, each public administration program is structured differently.

However, despite their differences, there are a few things that almost every public administration program, whether online or on-campus, has in common. The admissions requirements for the programs are one example.

While not all programs require you to have a master’s degree before enrolling, most prefer it. For those that don’t require it, you’ll probably still be required to have a bachelor’s degree in either public policy or public administration.

When it comes to the actual curriculum, though, the programs all seem to differ slightly. The classes taught in one program are often different from the classes taught in another program at a different university.

In almost every public administration program you are likely to take courses on public vs. private budgeting, advanced communications, and policymaking. The electives and other classes from program to program can vary, though.

However, despite the courses, the end goals of these programs are all usually very similar: They typically aim to educate doctoral students on the best practices governing the use and overseeing of public assets.

With a PhD in Public Administration, you could potentially find a career as a purchasing agent, budget analyst, human resources manager, auditor, financial manager, or something similar.

environmental scientists checking water quality of a river

Working in public health requires certain specific qualities. For instance, being able to keep calm under pressure is important. Being intelligent, analytical, and comfortable with the research and testing of potentially deadly viruses and diseases are also beneficial traits.

Public health isn’t entirely about diseases and outbreaks, though, no matter how it may seem.

The number one goal of most public health PhD programs is to educate students in all aspects of public health and how to present information and findings in a way the public can easily understand.

Another goal is to give doctoral students the knowledge and skills needed to help improve the overall public health of American citizens.

This includes instructing students on research skills and theory, particularly how to use research and the scientific method to improve upon methods already being used in the public health sector.

It’s also imperative to be able to present crisis-level information to the public in a way that keeps people from panicking.

The most common concentrations for a public health degree program are the following:

  • Biostatistics
  • Environmental Health
  • Health Management and Policies
  • Social Sciences
  • Chronic Diseases
  • The Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases

After graduation, jobs with the CDC and federal, state, and local governments are common. Other potential jobs include environmental scientist, biostatistician, epidemiologist, and safety engineer.

psychologist talking to a couple in her office

Part-time psychology PhD programs are also very popular choices for PhD seekers. This means there are plenty of online and on-campus programs available from which you can choose.

Although it can often be taken as an on-campus program very easily with excellent results, most people tend to take it online for the simple fact that it’s more convenient. This means there are many accredited online options for psychology.

Although a PhD in Psychology is typically meant for those who want to move out of practicing psychology and into the realms of psychological research and secondary education, some people do take it to become better, higher-paid psychologists. If you’re one of these people, being empathetic, curious, and non-judgmental are three helpful qualities to have to succeed in this career.

If you’re pursuing this degree in order to teach or move into pure research, an analytical mind, enjoyment of research, and a good grasp of the scientific method and process will serve you well. This degree depends heavily on independent research.

You’ll likely have coursework, lectures, and case studies, but most of your time will probably be spent researching your dissertation.

If you’re successful in earning your PhD in Psychology, you may continue to work in the field of psychology as a counselor, psychologist, or something similar, but that isn’t all you might do. You may also teach or work as a psychological researcher.

In addition to part-time PhD in Psychology programs, some universities offer part time PsyD programs . A PsyD is a Doctor of Psychology. This degree may be a good option for practitioners more interested in providing psychological services to clients.

Accreditation for Online Part Time PhD Programs

Accreditation for Online Part Time PhD Programs

The specific accreditation for your online program will depend on the degree field. Different fields have different boards certifying them as accredited programs. You should be able to check any program’s accreditation on the school’s website.

Regional accreditation is the most accepted and recognized by employers and other schools, should you want to transfer. National accreditation is acceptable as well, but it only accredits your program within a specific region of the U.S. Regional accreditation is typically recognized throughout the entire U.S., no matter where you relocate.

Schools without accreditation may not be accepted at all, so it is important to check your program’s accreditation status.

Financial Aid for PhD Part Time Students

Financial Aid for PhD Part Time Students

There are a few main types of financial aid to pursue as a PhD student: loans, grants and fellowships, and assistantships.

Loans are available to both online and on-campus students. Loans have to be repaid, so it is important to use them responsibly and only take out what you need. The best place to start looking for loans is usually the federal government. You can apply for loans by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA .

Fellowships and grants are similar to scholarships and are also available to both online and on-campus students. They’re usually given out to students who need financial aid who have completed applications proving they’re also deserving of the grants.

Many of these may be listed on your school’s specific website. Others can be found on Fastweb and other similar sites.

Finally, assistantships are available only to on-campus students. These are similar to work-study programs. You may work as either a teacher’s assistant, research assistant, or something similar. Working in the lab or as a teacher to undergrads are both typical assistantship duties.

Can You Do PhD Part Time?

Yes, many students work on their PhD part-time. When asking how long does it take to get a doctorate degree , it’s important to keep in mind that there are several programs, both online and on-campus, that allow doctoral students to take part-time PhD classes.

Is PhD Full Time or Part Time?

Depending on your budget and available free time, you can take either full-time or part-time PhD classes. The only difference is that it will take you longer to graduate if you only take part-time classes.

Is a PhD Worth It?

university professor teaching in a computer classroom

Yes, a PhD is worth it for many professionals. Earning your PhD can help open up new doors of opportunity and advancement in your current field. If you’ve ever considered teaching in your career field, a PhD can also help give you that opportunity.

You can do some research to find an online PhD program or campus-based program that’s right for you.

You now have the option to take PhD classes either online or on campus, and some programs are more affordable than they’ve ever been. Now may be the time for you to take the next step toward an advanced degree.

Professionals seeking to obtain a Ph.D. may enroll in a part-time program to meet their educational goals. Part-time studies allow working professionals to obtain their degree without accepting a reduction in salary.

The program of study requires that students fulfill the same requirements as their full-time peers. Students who are enrolled part-time are afforded between 7 and 10 years to complete the program of study. Full-time students pursuing a Ph.D. may complete their program of study in 2 to 3 years depending upon the curriculum.

Many universities will place restrictions on the number of courses a student can complete part-time. However, most universities will require that professionals enroll each quarter to complete their program of study.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), half of the students enrolled in graduate school are enrolled part-time. Between 2007 and 2018, the National Center for Education Statistics expects a 10 percent increase in graduate student enrollment.

Ph.D. programs differ based upon the desired curriculum the student wants to study. Some Ph.D. programs, such as the Executive Doctoral program, require professionals obtain a specified amount of work experience prior to enrollment. Academic teaching Ph.D. program requirements vary from program to program. All Ph.D. programs require students complete a Master’s degree prior to entering a Ph.D. program.

Some academic programs place other limitations on students enrolled part-time. These restrictions may include limited financial aid awards and limited insurance benefits for part-time students. Part-time students must be approved by the school’s administration prior to enrollment into any academic program. These students may take longer to finish their programs. However, part-time students do not tolerate a pay reduction. Doctoral degrees may offer advancement for executives. Alternatively, doctoral degrees may offer advancements in the academic arena.

Part-time doctoral programs may take place online or in a traditional classroom setting. Distance-learning classes may consist of Web 2.0 technology to disseminate tasks, case studies, video instruction, and other instructional tools.

Experts at the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) state that academic institutions award more Doctorate degrees in engineering, education, health professions, biomedical sciences and psychology. Individuals who receive doctoral degrees in these areas have earned a Doctor of Education, Doctor of Philosophy or a Doctor of Medicine.

Part-Time Doctoral Degree Curriculum

  • Strategy / Strategic Thinking
  • Research Methodology
  • Data Analysis
  • Management Skills
  • Leadership Skills
  • Dissertation Thesis Seminar

Offline Part-Time Doctoral Programs

Massachusetts school of professional psychology.

www.mspp.edu

The Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology offers students a part-time program in the Doctor of Psychology (PSYD) in Clinical Psychology Program. The academic school accepts students on a limited basis part-time. Students will be admitted into the Doctoral Clinical Program with an option of initial part-time enrollment. These students require special permission and will be accepted on a space available basis. Students desiring enrollment must indicate this request on their application.

The first year of this program must be completed in a maximum of two years. The remainder of the program must take no longer than 7 years to complete. Massachusetts requires students take a minimum of three academic courses per semester. Two of the courses must be either theory-based or clinically focused courses.

The first year will primarily consist of academic coursework. The second-year students are required to enroll in Clinical Seminar I and Practicum I, in addition to another course. In the third year, students are required to enroll in Clinical Seminar II and Practicum II.

Students must also enroll in an internship that must be completed in two consecutive years. The two half-time internships are integrated with coursework from classes during those same years. Students must work with their advisors in order to establish a program tailored to their specific needs.

Waiting lists are available for part-time academic programs. Students may be placed on the list until a space opens up for the student to matriculate into school.

The University of Western Ontario

www.fims.uwo.ca

The Faculty of Information and Media Studies is offering a part-time doctoral program in Library and Information Science. This particular program admits between 1 and 2 students per year. Students should meet the same requirements that are required of full-time students for enrollment. Students must complete a four-year academic degree with Honors. This requires that students have a B average or higher upon graduation.

Applicants must also possess a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science. Those students with Master’s degrees in another program of study must complete five courses in the Library and Information Science Master’s program. Additionally, the students must complete six doctoral programs as well.

Students enrolled in this program of study part-time are not eligible for the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies funding. Part-time students also may not hold external scholarships that require full-time status, if enrolled part-time. Part-time fees are simply the full-time rate divided in half.

New York University

www.nyu.edu

New York University offers students desiring a part-time Ph.D. program the opportunity to pursue the computer science course of study. These students are required to complete two courses per semester. Students who enroll in this program of study are not eligible for insurance through the school or financial aid.

Students have 10 years to complete the computer science Ph.D. program part-time. Some courses may be exempted from the curriculum if students pass an exam with a minimum of an A-.

New York University is located in Manhattan. The school has educated several Pulitzer Prize winners and Nobel Laureates. Last year, 400 students were awarded their doctoral degrees from the university. The school has also had the opportunity to have educated 70 graduate students on the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in the past 17 years.

Job Opportunities for Part-Time Doctoral Programs

The majority of doctoral graduates are employed in health services and academia. In fact, according to a 2000 study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 28 percent of doctoral graduates were employed in academia and 21 percent of doctoral graduates were employed in health services. The remaining graduates are employed in a variety of fields. The industries include Business, Finance, Insurance, Real Estate, Legal Services, Education and Public Administration.

The unemployment rate for doctoral graduates is one of the lowest. According to a 2004 study, the unemployment rate for doctoral graduates is 2.1 percent. The same study indicated that the rate for people with an Associate’s degree is 4.0 percent. Of course, these studies were conducted before the recession. However, that is traditionally the case. Doctoral graduates also tend to earn more in the work place. Median earnings for a doctoral graduate can be as much as 62 percent higher.

Executives that earn their doctoral degrees may be employed in the following professions:

  • Chief Executive Officer
  • Chief Operating Officer
  • Chief Financial Officer
  • Professional Consultant
  • Vice President of Finance
  • Vice President of Marketing
  • Academic Professor

Their salaries are some of the highest of all professions. The median salary of executive doctoral candidates is $167,280. Some areas such as the New York Metropolitan area, San Jose Metropolitan area, Bridgeport Metropolitan area and Durham, NC each have a median salary between $217,080 and $210,380. States with the highest median salaries for executives with Doctorates are Delaware, New Mexico, California, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Individuals with Professional Doctorates will primarily focus on applied use of the theory obtained during their studies. Doctor of Health Sciences, Doctors of Education, Doctor of Business Administration, Doctor of Professional Studies, Doctor of Dental Medicine, and Juris Doctor are all professional doctorates that apply their studies within their field rather than teach full-time. Some of these professionals also choose to teach in addition to their studies. However, their primary focus is applied use of the theoretical knowledge obtained during their course of study.

In 2009, the number of applicants applying to doctoral programs rose. However, recent graduates are accepting public service jobs, such as Teach for America and other public service jobs. At Ivy League schools, like Harvard, employer recruitment is down 19 percent. Employers expect to hire 22 percent less graduates from schools nationwide in all fields. In the Northeast, employers expect to hire 39 percent less graduates from all schools nationwide.

Currently, many areas are experiencing a shortage of doctoral graduates. Health care fields, computer science, and accounting are seeking doctoral graduates to replace executives and academic professors that are retiring. Professionals enrolling in these professions are more likely to find a position despite the current economic decline.

Collaborative Ph.D. Programs

part time phd programs in usa

The Collaborative Ph.D. program is designed for engineers, executives, scientists, military personnel, state and federal government employees, and educators who want to pursue a Ph.D. degree part-time while continuing full-time employment.

The admission and academic requirements are the same as for NJIT’s regular Ph.D. programs but the collaborative nature of the program allows participants to draw on the combined expertise and resources of the university and their employer. The dissertation research of students in the collaborative Ph.D. is expected to produce original contributions to science, engineering, technology or management and satisfy all quality criteria set by the dissertation committee. The student’s main dissertation advisor is an NJIT faculty member while the research may meet the needs of the student and employer in advancing knowledge in the chosen discipline.

The Collaborative Ph.D. has two tracks: the Traditional track and the Employer-Sponsored track . The Employer-Sponsored track requires a major commitment by the student’s employer that can lead to the signing of a joint IP (Intellectual Property) agreement with NJIT.

To apply to the collaborative Ph.D. program, candidates must have been employed in their specified field for at least a year. NJIT’s standard criteria for admission will be applied but prior work-related research activity, publications, and honors will also be considered in evaluating prospective participants.

TRADITIONAL TRACK

Requirements

Any applicant interested in this track should first contact the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies to have an initial discussion of program requirements and expectations. Before applying to the collaborative Ph.D. program, the candidate will seek the employer’s commitment in any of the following ways:

  • The candidate will be allowed to use the employer’s facilities (e.g., laboratory equipment or computing/IT infrastructure) to carry out dissertation research (NJIT’s Ph.D. program director or potential dissertation advisor must be contacted in advance to discuss the suitability of available resources). Should the student leave the employer, a revised study/research plan may be developed.

Note : Employers who have a proprietary interest in the student’s dissertation research, including patent, copyright and technology transfer rights, are expected to execute formal IP (Intellectual Property) agreements with NJIT, and in these cases the student is expected to pursue the Employer-Sponsored Collaborative Ph.D. track.

The student's Ph.D. dissertation committee and the Office of Graduate Studies determine residency requirements. It is expected that the employer will allow the student to concentrate on dissertation research for at least one year.

EMPLOYER-SPONSORED TRACK

Pre-Qualification Assessment (Conducted by the Graduate Studies Office-GSO) Any applicant interested in the Employer-Sponsored Collaborative Ph.D. track should first contact the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies to have an initial discussion of program requirements and expectations.  If still interested, the applicant must then provide the Graduate Studies Office (GSO) with the following:

  • Verification of full-time employment status.
  • Work portfolio, if available, relevant to the Ph.D. program of an NJIT Academic Unit.
  • A statement of purpose (three pages maximum).
  • Prior degree with transcripts in a related discipline, or in rare cases a degree with transcripts in another discipline plus a portfolio demonstrating adequate professional experience in the field of study.
  • Written commitment from employer allowing the applicant to spend substantial time at work towards Ph.D. studies while also providing on-site research/development resources needed for dissertation research.
  • Written commitment from employer in assigning a mentor who holds a Ph.D. degree in a related-to-the-dissertation-research discipline. This mentor will serve as a co-advisor or as a member of the Ph.D. Dissertation Committee.
  • Letter from employer listing expected IP claims generated by the applicant’s dissertation research to initiate the process of negotiating an IP agreement with NJIT.

All material from the employer must be signed by the applicant’s supervisor or a higher authorized signatory in the organization.

If the applicant has demonstrably strong work experience, the pertinent Ph.D. program committee will evaluate the submitted portfolio for possible translation into course credits through NJIT’s CBP (Credit-By-Portfolio) evaluation process.  Ph.D. committee members within the Academic Unit are expected to interview the applicant before making their admission decision.

The Ph.D. committee will conditionally admit the applicant to the Employer-Sponsored Collaborative Ph.D., pending the filing of a plan of study (POS), and an IP agreement normally signed by the start of the first semester. The agreement should mention the IP generated by the student, the NJIT dissertation advisor(s), and the mentor at the employer site advising the applicant.  The agreement should also account for the ownership of resources used in the research.  It is anticipated that students will conduct most of their research at their site of employment.

Before the start of their first semester and in collaboration with the Ph.D. program director, the conditionally admitted Ph.D. student must file a POS that lists the courses to be taken and the related timeline.  Any modification to the POS during the studies must be approved by the Ph.D. program director and dissertation advisor (if known)

For more information about the program or to discuss potential paths that can lead to the degree, contact the  Vice Provost for Graduate Studies .

Your DBA at a glance

Begin your doctoral journey by identifying and exploring a major business challenge that's directly relevant to you and not currently addressed by contemporary theories. Your research will lead you to create rigorous tools to address that problem and improve the practice of management long-term. Candidates for the Doctor of Business Administration program will receive support to generate new knowledge and become scholar-practitioners who can enhance their organizations’ performance through evidence-based practice. In addition to learning statistical methods and learning how to write three publishable papers, which can be further published in academic or practitioner outlets, you’ll also conduct two practicums. These practicums will guide students, clients, and peers from your own company and industry in recognizing, and solving, the business problem.

part time phd programs in usa

Conceptual Paper

This publishable paper builds upon the concepts of systematic literature reviews and theoretical foundations of researched business problems to derive novel, testable propositions from the author’s experience and extant literature.

Course: Problem Formation

Practicum 1

DBA students will lead a workshop to teach non-DBA students, corporate peers, and clients from their organizations. The purpose of this presentation is to strengthen students’ ability to synthesize several research phases and communicate them to non-academic audiences in a thoughtful, persuasive, and effective manner that can drive impactful change.

Course: Visualization & Communication

Quantitative Paper 1

The second publishable paper is a result of a four-course series focused on statistical analyses, data collection, visualization, and academic writing. Students build upon the conceptual framework laid out in their first paper to produce a full publishable academic paper detailing their primary research methods as it relates to their problem of practice. Students are encouraged to submit this paper to academic conferences.

Course: Quantitative Research Methods 1; Data Collection: Surveys; Visualization & Communication; Academic Writing

Practicum 2

DBA students will lead a second workshop focusing on their conclusions from the execution and evaluation of their applied research on a problem of practice. Like the first practicum, the goal of this workshop is to drive change through impact-driven research presentations.

Course: Data Interpretation

Quantitative Paper 2

This key program assessment is a result of a three-course sequence that trains students to identify and plan the execution of their data-driven solution. Students are also encouraged to submit this paper to academic or practitioner conferences.

Course: Quantitative Research Methods 2; Data Interpretation; Dissemination

Dissertation

The final dissertation is a result of a two-course sequence where students collaborate predominantly with their supervisors to update and integrate the three major academic papers into a single dissertation. Students will be required to present the written document along with an oral defense (viva) to the Dissertation Committee.

Course: Dissertation Construction; Dissertation Defense

We're here to help! Find the answers to your most commonly asked questions below.

If you can't find an answer to your question then please contact us.

Where is the program accredited?

The Hult DBA is a US degree, accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), a regional accrediting organization recognized by the US Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Regional accreditation is considered the most prestigious form of accreditation in the US. As a US degree, the Hult DBA can be attested anywhere.

Can I become a professor with this DBA?

The DBA is a terminal degree and academic equivalent of a PhD, EdD, etc. DBA graduates are qualified to begin or continue a career in academia as professors and scholars. Therefore, you may apply to academic positions that require terminal degrees. Note that the Hult DBA does not offer content courses or specializations in business and management. Candidates who require postgraduate course credits to teach in this field may take additional courses separate from the DBA.

Can I choose which campus I complete my residencies on?

No. Hult DBA residencies operate in a rotational format and in a specific order.

Can I still apply if I have a master's in a non-business-related field?

Candidates without a business-related master’s degree must provide evidence of at least 12 postgraduate-level credits in business. This could be in the form of a postgraduate certificate or diploma (note that the content must be appropriate and cover all areas of business). Alternatively, you may take courses in one of Hult’s part-time MBA programs.

What is the difference between a PhD and a DBA?

A DBA, like its PhD counterpart, requires advanced research skills that lead to a dissertation or thesis and the conferral of a doctoral title. However, DBA programs often focus on the application of theory to a real-world business problem and are aimed at working professionals with years of extensive managerial experience. For more information on the difference between a PhD and a DBA, take a look at this article on the Hult Blog .

When will my supervisor be assigned?

Supervisor-student matches are communicated to new students immediately after matriculation.

Can I get a scholarship?

Currently, Hult does not provide scholarships for its DBA programs. Note that Hult alumni are eligible for a 10% discount.

Will I need to publish my dissertation to get my degree?

No, we do not require the publication of research output in journals. The Hult DBA requires all research output to be of publishable standard—that is, of a standard that is acceptable by top-tier journals and conferences. While you are not required to publish, students are strongly encouraged to present at prestigious conferences such as the Academy of Management (AOM) annual meetings.

What is the cost of the program? What are the payment options?

The program costs $99,000, inclusive of the confirmation deposit of $5,000 due two weeks after notification of acceptance. Students are responsible for their residency travel costs. Installment plans are available for up to six payments throughout the program. Please speak to an enrollment advisor during the application process to explore what plans are right for you.

How often will I have lectures? When are they held?

The Hult DBA is offered in a hybrid format, with a mix of live Zoom classes and three in-person residencies per year. Hybrid courses will meet once a week on Zoom along with a five-day in-person residency in one of Hult’s global campuses. Courses without a residency will meet twice a week on Zoom. Please note that course schedules are subject to change.

Can I transfer credits from a previous or current doctorate program?

Transfer credits from a previous or current doctorate are not accepted into the program.

I chose the Hult DBA program to broaden my horizons, challenge myself and achieve personal and professional growth; to meet other like-minded people and access relevant research work. For doctoral students, Hult International Business School is a great place to be, with all the resources you need, a strong international presence, and a world-class academic team. The program helps me to take my skills and expertise to the next level in terms of the value that I'm going to bring to my organization and open exciting new opportunities for growth and professional advancement.

Part Time PhD in Computer Science

part-time CS PhD

Part time doctoral programs in computer science may be offered in an online or on-campus format, but program offerings vary widely from school to school.

Doctoral programs are intended to help prepare you for advanced positions in computer science by building on existing skills and knowledge developed in bachelors- or masters-level programs. As an example, you may have earned a part time masters in computer science and are now ready to take your skills to the doctoral level in a part time program.

You may increase your understanding of operating systems, computer engineering, programming languages, and information networks, among other topics. Due to the part-time attendance structure, these programs are often ideal for working professionals who are looking to advance their education while maintaining regular employment.

Many students feel that computer science is hard , so the part-time structure may also be a good fit if you need to balance other life or family responsibilities. Pursuing a part-time PhD program in computer science may require you to complete a variety of courses.

Some of these courses may include theoretical foundations of computer science, algorithm design, software engineering, computer programming, programming languages, and data structures. Additional coursework may include calculus, software modeling, network security, machine learning, and data visualization.

Common career options with a Ph.D. in Computer Science include teaching positions at universities along with professional research roles within academic institutions, the government, or think tank organizations.

You may also find rewarding employment in positions such as computer and information systems manager, computer hardware engineer, computer network architect, software quality assurance analyst, or information security analyst.

Part-Time vs. Full-Time PhD in Computer Science

computer programmer working

Choosing whether to attend a PhD in Computer Science part-time or full-time may depend on a variety of factors, including which format best fits into your life, how long it will take for you to complete the program, and the manner in which you will attend your classes.

You may want the flexibility of earning an online computer science degree , or you may prefer the structure that accompanies in-person learning.

PhD in Computer science student

Earning a doctorate in computer science generally requires the completion of 72 to 90 credits. The number of required credits may vary from school to school.

Whether you choose to study online or on-campus, you may be able to attend courses on evenings or weekends. Notably, as with the best online computer science masters degree programs, online PhD programs may offer a more flexible course structure so that you can attend online lectures whenever it fits into your schedule. With this option, you wouldn’t have to attend at a specific time on a certain date.

On the other hand, you may prefer to attend courses in-person to benefit from networking with other students or from a more structured learning environment.

Time to Completion

PhD in CS student

While part-time and full-time attendance will require you to complete the same number of credits, the two options may take varying amounts of time to complete. Studying on a part-time basis may extend the length of time required to obtain your degree.

The amount of time it takes may depend on the number of courses you are able to complete each semester. It may also depend on how long it takes for you to complete any dissertation requirements that may be needed in order to graduate.

Additionally, breaking down larger tasks into smaller, manageable chunks can help you stay organized and prevent overwhelm. By setting realistic goals for each study session, you can make progress towards your PhD while still managing other responsibilities.

Communicate needs clearly at work

When pursuing a part-time PhD, it is essential to communicate your needs with your employer or colleagues. Letting them know about your academic commitments and the time required for your studies can help them understand your availability and make necessary adjustments.

Consider having a conversation with your supervisor or manager to discuss your situation and explore potential flexible working arrangements. This could include adjusting your work schedule, reducing your workload, or even exploring opportunities for research collaboration between your job and your PhD.

Open and honest communication can go a long way in ensuring that both your work and academic responsibilities are managed effectively.

Leverage support systems

Pursuing a part-time PhD can be challenging, but you don’t have to do it alone. It is crucial to leverage the support systems available to you.

Reach out to your academic advisor or supervisor for guidance and support. They can provide valuable insights on managing your time, selecting courses, and balancing your academic and work commitments.

Additionally, consider joining or forming study groups with fellow part-time PhD students. Collaborating with others who are facing similar challenges can provide a sense of camaraderie and support. You can share study materials, discuss research ideas, and offer each other encouragement along the way.

Lastly, don’t forget about the support of your family and friends. Let them know about your academic journey and the challenges you may face. Their understanding and encouragement can help you stay motivated and focused on your goals.

Remember, pursuing a part-time PhD in computer science requires dedication, discipline, and effective time management. MIT Sloan Experience

Now Reading 4 of 4

The PhD Program is integral to the research of MIT Sloan's world-class faculty. With a reputation as risk-takers who are unafraid to embrace the unconventional, they are engaged in exciting disciplinary and interdisciplinary research that often includes PhD students as key team members.

Research centers across MIT Sloan and MIT provide a rich setting for collaboration and exploration. In addition to exposure to the faculty, PhD students also learn from one another in a creative, supportive research community.

Throughout MIT Sloan's history, our professors have devised theories and fields of study that have had a profound impact on management theory and practice.

From Douglas McGregor's Theory X/Theory Y distinction to Nobel-recognized breakthroughs in finance by Franco Modigliani and in option pricing by Robert Merton and Myron Scholes, MIT Sloan's faculty have been unmatched innovators.

This legacy of innovative thinking and dedication to research impacts every faculty member and filters down to the students who work beside them.

Student Research

“MIT Sloan PhD training is a transformative experience. The heart of the process is the student’s transition from being a consumer of knowledge to being a producer of knowledge. This involves learning to ask precise, tractable questions and addressing them with creativity and rigor. Hard work is required, but the reward is the incomparable exhilaration one feels from having solved a puzzle that had bedeviled the sharpest minds in the world!” -Ezra Zuckerman Sivan Alvin J. Siteman (1948) Professor of Entrepreneurship

Sample Dissertation Abstracts - These sample Dissertation Abstracts provide examples of the work that our students have chosen to study while in the MIT Sloan PhD Program.

We believe that our doctoral program is the heart of MIT Sloan's research community and that it develops some of the best management researchers in the world. At our annual Doctoral Research Forum, we celebrate the great research that our doctoral students do, and the research community that supports that development process.

The videos of their presentations below showcase the work of our students and will give you insight into the topics they choose to research in the program.

PhD Admissions

The PhD program in Psychology trains students for careers in research and teaching. In addition to a wide range of courses, the PhD program is characterized by close collaboration between students and their faculty advisors.

General Information

The Department of Psychology holistically reviews each candidate's complete application to assess the promise of a career in teaching and research. Consideration is based on various factors, including courses taken, grade point average, letters of recommendation, and the statement of purpose. Additionally, the Department of Psychology places considerable emphasis on research training, and admitted students have often been involved in independent research as undergraduate students or post-baccalaureate settings. Although there are no course requirements for admission, all applicants should have sufficient foundational knowledge and research experience to engage in graduate-level coursework and research.

We accept students with undergraduate degrees and those with both undergraduate and master's degrees. An undergraduate psychology major is not required; the Department welcomes applicants from other academic backgrounds.

Our application portal is now closed for the AY24-25 admissions cycle.  Please consider applying during next year's AY25-26 admissions cycle, which opens on September 15, 2024.

How to Apply

Application and deadline.

Our 2025-26 Admissions application will open on September 15, 2024.

Applications will be due on November 30, 2024

The deadline for letters of recommendation will be  November 30, 2024 .

Once an applicant submits the recommenders' information, the recommenders will receive an automated email with instructions for submitting the letter. Late letters should be sent directly to psych-admissions [at] stanford.edu (psych-admissions[at]stanford[dot]edu) . Staff will add them to the application file if the review process is still underway. Still, the faculty reviewers are not obligated to re-review files for materials submitted after the deadline.

The status of submitted applications can be viewed by logging in to the   application portal .

The deadline to apply for the Stanford Psychology Ph.D. program is  November 30, 2024 .

Applicants who are admitted to the program will matriculate in autumn 2025.

In addition to the information below, please review the  Graduate Admissions  website prior to starting your application. The Department of Psychology does not have rolling admissions. We admit for the Autumn term only.

Requirements

  • U.S. Bachelor's degree or its  foreign equivalent
  • Statement of Purpose (submitted electronically as part of the graduate application). You will be able to specify three  Psychology Department faculty members , in order of preference, with whom you would like to work.
  • Three  Letters of Recommendation  (submitted electronically). A maximum of six letters will be accepted.
  • Unofficial transcripts from all universities and colleges you have attended for at least one year must be uploaded to the graduate application. Applicants who reach the interview stage will be asked to provide official transcripts as well; Department staff will reach out to these applicants with instructions for submitting official transcripts. Please do  not  submit official transcripts with your initial application.
  • Required for non-native English speakers: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores, submitted by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) electronically to Stanford.

Application Fee

The fee to apply for graduate study at Stanford is $125. Fee waivers are available for some applicants. Please visit Graduate Admissions for information on applying for an  Application Fee Waiver .

Application Review & Status Check

The Department of Psychology welcomes graduate applications from individuals with a broad range of life experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds who would contribute to our community of scholars. The review of applications is holistic and individualized, considering each applicant’s academic record and accomplishments, letters of recommendation, and admissions essays to understand how an applicant’s life experiences have shaped their past and potential contributions to their field.

To check the status or activity of your application, please log into your  application account . You can also send reminders to recommenders who have not yet submitted their letter of recommendation.

Due to limited bandwidth, the Department of Psychology staff will not answer any phone or email queries about application status, including requests to confirm the receipt of official transcripts.

Our faculty will interview prospective students before making final admission decisions. Candidates who progress to the interview round will be informed in January. Interviews are generally conducted in February.

The Department of Psychology recognizes that the Supreme Court issued a ruling in June 2023 about the consideration of certain types of demographic information as part of an admission review. All applications submitted during upcoming application cycles will be reviewed in conformance with that decision.

A degree candidate who wishes to enroll as a part-time student must complete an application for part-time study and submit it to the Office of Academic Programs for approval. See the academic calendar for deadlines.

  • Before applying for part-time study, students should discuss their plans with their advisor and with their  financial aid officer .

Part-time study may be approved if the student:

  • needs to care for small children at home
  • experiences personal ill health or severe illness of other family members
  • is under extreme financial strain and has dependents
  • is a master’s student in their final term of enrollment.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Part-time students are charged the appropriate per-course rate until the equivalent of two years of full tuition has been paid. Thereafter, they register and are charged reduced tuition as full-time students. They must have paid a minimum total of two years of full tuition and two years of reduced tuition prior to receipt of the PhD unless the degree was completed in fewer than four years from initial registration. If a student who has been part-time completes the PhD in fewer than four years, the student will be charged what a full-time student would have paid over the same period of time.

International Students

Foreign nationals with student visas who are not officially permanent residents of the United States may register for part-time study if they:

  • are in their final term of enrollment
  • have three or fewer courses remaining

The application must be signed by the Harvard International Office .

Health Insurance

According to Massachusetts law, part-time students must participate in a qualifying student health insurance program or in a health plan of comparable coverage. All Harvard students are automatically enrolled in the Harvard University Student Health Program (HUSHP) and fees are applied to their student account.

Doctoral programs.

The goal of the GSE PhD in Education is to prepare the next generation of leading education researchers. The cornerstone of the doctoral experience at the Stanford Graduate School of Education is the research apprenticeship that all students undertake, typically under the guidance of their academic advisor, but often with other Stanford faculty as well.

In this apprenticeship model, doctoral students are provided with a multi-year funding package that consists of opportunities each quarter to serve as teaching and research assistants for faculty members' courses and research projects. By this means, and in combination with the courses they take as part of their program, students are prepared over an approximately five-year period to excel as university teachers and education researchers.

The doctoral degree in Education at the GSE includes doctoral program requirements as well as a specialization, as listed below, overseen by a faculty committee from one of the GSE's three academic areas.

The Department's current research tracks in the PhD program include:

Cancer Epidemiology offers a rich, vibrant and dynamic environment for masters and doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows to actively participate, learn, explore and conduct cancer-related population-based and clinical research. The track has a long and successful history of training masters and doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. Past students continue to conduct population-based cancer research and have made successful transitions to positions in academia, government and private sector organizations.

Cardiovascular and Clinical Epidemiology focuses on the use of epidemiologic methods in clinical research and practice as well as interdisciplinary training on the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease. The program integrates knowledge on all aspects of the disease: biology, behavior, treatment, and prevention. Training emphasizes active participation in research and translational epidemiology using a collaborative approach, which is enhanced by the close relationships between the Department of Epidemiology and clinical departments of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Clinical Trials and Evidence Synthesis offers students a unique educational experience in clinical trial and evidence synthesis methodology. Methods are applied to a variety of clinical areas including respiratory-, eye- and infectious diseases, and mental health. Student-faculty discussions, journal clubs, research-in-progress meetings, seminars and active participation in research add to both the depth and breadth of the program.

Environmental Epidemiology concentrates on the impact of environmental exposures on health and disease states in human populations. This track integrates epidemiological methods, assessment of environmental exposures and understanding of specific disease processes to identify the health consequences of environmental exposures. Environmental Epidemiology provides basic information for risk assessment, risk communication, and environmental health policy decisions and has a central role in identifying, implementing and evaluating strategies for the prevention and control of environmental exposures. Training in Environmental Epidemiology emphasizes active participation in large population research projects, with close collaborations across the School and with national and international collaborators.

Epidemiology of Aging focuses on the determinants of physical and cognitive health, disease, and function in older adults. Offers multidisciplinary training in methods and theories needed for the study of older populations. Strong ties exist with several multi-departmental training grants and programs. This training program also is connected to numerous large research projects.

General Epidemiology and Methodology offers research and training opportunities in almost all areas of chronic disease epidemiology, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diseases of childhood and includes advanced methodology training in epidemiologic methods as well as providing individualized or customized training in statistical epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology and social epidemiology.

Genetic Epidemiology focuses on the study of genetic and environmental factors, and their interaction in disease and normal variation. Emphasis is on understanding the methodology and approach to designing, executing and analyzing genetic studies. Training is broad-based and collaborative and encourages participation in research from faculty in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Institute of Genetic Medicine, and the School of Medicine.

Infectious Disease Epidemiology provides training in the fundamentals of infectious disease epidemiology with an eye toward preparing graduates to work in teaching, research and practice. The program emphasizes principles and methods that can be used to understand the dynamics and control of transmissible diseases by all classes of organisms. The curriculum builds on the faculty's extensive and diverse experience researching and combating infectious diseases, ranging from hospital acquired infections, to neglected tropical diseases and sexually transmitted infections.

U.S. News Ranks Best Graduate Schools

To help prospective graduate students find a school that fits their needs, U.S. News released the 2024 rankings for multiple graduate fields.

Depending on the job or field, earning a graduate degree may lead to higher earnings, career advancement and specialized skill development.

But with several types of degrees and hundreds of graduate schools, it can be difficult to narrow down the options. To help prospective graduate students find a school that fits their needs, U.S. News released its 2024 Best Graduate Schools rankings today. They evaluate business, education, fine arts, health, law, library studies, nursing, public affairs, science, and social sciences and humanities graduate programs. Medical school and engineering rankings are not being released at this time.

A notable methodology change includes a new salary indicator based on profession in the business rankings.

Additionally, for the first time in four years, there are new rankings for a blend of doctoral and master's programs in audiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, pharmacy, nurse midwifery and speech-language pathology. Graduate programs in nurse anesthesia and social work are also ranked for the first time since 2016 and 2022, respectively. Those and other specialty rankings are based on reputation ratings from scholars at other surveyed schools.

Read each program's specific methodology for the most detailed explanations of all the changes. The rankings are one source of information among many that prospective college students can use to inform their college decision. Below is a summary of the top-ranked schools in four major graduate program areas:

Best Law Schools

Best business schools, best nursing schools, best education schools.

Among the top 10 law schools . Yale Law School in Connecticut and California-based  Stanford Law School shared the top spot again. The  University of Chicago Law School in Illinois maintained its No. 3 rank, followed by a four-way tie at No. 4: Duke University School of Law in North Carolina, Harvard Law School in Massachusetts, the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and the University of Virginia School of Law .

Columbia Law School in New York ranked No. 8 again, while there was a three-way tie for No. 9: New York University School of Law , Northwestern University's Pritzker School of Law in Illinois and the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor Law School .

Looking beyond the top 10, multiple law schools moved up in the rankings. William & Mary Law School in Virginia, for instance, jumped nine spots from a tie at No. 45 to a five-way tie at No. 36.

U.S. News also ranked 13 law specialties: business/corporate, clinical training, constitutional, contracts/commercial, criminal, dispute resolution, environmental, health care, intellectual property, international, legal writing, tax and trial advocacy. (You can filter by specialty on the  main ranking page .)

Meanwhile, in the  part-time law school rankings – which consists of law schools with at least 20 part-time students enrolled in fall 2022 and fall 2023 – the top three stayed the same. The  Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., is once again at the top while D.C.-based  George Washington University Law School , now No. 3, switched places with the  Fordham University School of Law in New York City, which claimed second place.

Previously ranked at No. 3 and No. 6 respectively, the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and Stanford Graduate School of Business took the top spot in this year's full-time MBA program rankings . Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management and the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business moved down from their previous places in the top two to tie at No. 3.

While the top 10 mostly consists of the same schools as last year, both the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business joined those ranks this year. UC Berkeley rose from a three-way tie at No. 11 to a three-way tie at No. 7, while UVA moved up four spots from No. 14 to a tie at No. 10.

Farther down the full-time MBA rankings, there were some big changes. For example, Pitt's Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business soared 39 spots from a tie at No. 86 to a tie at No. 47.

Meanwhile, the very top of the part-time MBA rankings looks similar to last year, with the same schools in the top 5: UChicago, UC Berkeley, Northwestern, NYU's Leonard N. Stern School of Business and the Anderson School of Management at the University of California—Los Angeles. But UChicago took the No. 1 spot from UC Berkeley this year.

Moving up from No. 2, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in Maryland tied with Emory University's Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing in Georgia to claim the top spot in this year's nursing master's program rankings. Duke University School of Nursing in North Carolina climbed up by one to claim the third spot.

Johns Hopkins ranked No. 1, as it did last year, in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program rankings. George Mason University School of Nursing in Virginia – which reported more graduates and resources per faculty – soared from a four-way tie at No. 39 to take the No. 2 spot. Duke tied with the University of Washington School of Nursing to round out the top three.

Duke also ranked No. 1 in all of the ranked nursing master's nursing practice specialties, including administration, family, both acute and primary care adult gerontology, and mental health.

Once again, Teachers College, Columbia University in New York was No. 1 in the graduate education schools rankings. This year, however, it tied with the University of Wisconsin—Madison School of Education , which climbed two spots.

The University of Michigan—Ann Arbor's School of Education dropped from the top position to tie with the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies at No. 3. UCLA was previously tied at No. 7.

U.S. News also ranks nine education specialties, with the College of Education at Michigan State University claiming the top spot in the following categories: curriculum and instruction, educational administration, elementary teacher education, higher education administration and secondary teacher education.

Nearly every ranked University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver) program moved up in the standings according to today’s 2024 U.S. News & World Report ’s best graduate school release. As Colorado’s only public urban research university, CU Denver is well-positioned to make a big impact in the community by addressing critical teacher shortages, driving economic growth, and developing the next cohort of civic leaders.

Educating Colorado’s Educators CU Denver’s graduate education program jumped 13 spots, ranks among the top in Colorado, and is among the top 100 nationally.

“Our consistent top rankings demonstrate that our school remains a statewide and national leader, strongly committed to contributing to the world through high quality teaching and impactful research,” said Marvin Lynn, PhD, Dean of the School of Education & Human Development (SEHD). “This is also an indication of the impact our alumni are having in our community. We are so proud of our former students and the differences they make in the urban, rural, and global communities in which they serve.”

This national recognition comes at a time when Colorado and the nation is facing a critical teacher shortage, while also responding to demographic shifts among school-age children.

SEHD’s graduate program is the largest in the state and is ranked #2 in Colorado.

Public Affairs Graduate Programs Continue to Lead Colorado

The School of Public Affairs graduate program continues to shine and ranks #1 in Colorado as well as the Rocky Mountain Region, and is one of the top 30 in the nation. Each of these specializations also earned top rankings in the state: Environmental Policy and Management, Non-Profit Management, Public Management and Leadership, and Public Finance and Budgeting.

“There are a lot of professors who really have contributed to my whole experience. They gave me guidance, support, helped clarify things, and pushed me in the right direction,” said Cameron Dexter, Dual Master of Public Administration-Master of Criminal Justice. “Attending CU Denver online really helped in the sense that it allowed me to continue to live my life [in Maui]. I was able to pursue my education in addition to my full-time employment as a court officer.”

Part-Time MBA Removes Barriers

Recognizing that many students are not able to attend school full time, the CU Denver Part-time MBA program provides a flexible option for those trying to balance study with work and families. With more specialization options than any other part-time MBA program in Colorado, students chose the format that matches their lifestyle and career goals—including in-person, hybrid, and fully online curriculum.

This program is tied for #1 in Colorado and is one of the top 50 in the nation.

Ranking Methodology

U.S. News  has provided education rankings for 30 years. Factors, known as ranking indicators, are used to  assess each graduate program  and are based on two types of data: expert opinion about program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research, and students.  U.S. News  made several key updates to the methodologies. Read  each program’s specific methodology for more detailed explanations. If a school or program is listed as unranked, that means it did not supply  U.S. News  with enough key statistical data to be numerically ranked.
