How to settle permanently​ in Switzerland. Pls guide me.

We have lived in Switzerland for over four years having also lived in various countries around the world. My wife and I have lived in both the French speaking and German speaking parts of this beautiful country but disagree with the above comment that the Swiss people are “friendly”, we are bilingual and find the people in the German section are far less friendly than those on the French side. As for the food, unless you like coarse sausages and bland cheeses served by sullen waiters there is no way that this is a hospitable country and it is certainly the most expensive we have lived in and will be glad to move on as soon as our health allows it if we have enough funds left!!!!

i want to visit here…. i love the mountains, to rock climb & snowboard, to visit diverse cultures, learn new languages and your people intrigue me with purpose!

My Favorite Countries in the World (from a traveler who’s been to nearly 100)

What’s your favorite country?

I get asked this question all the time.

It’s the most difficult to answer. The short answer is, I don’t have one. I have many favorites. I like different places for different reasons. In no particular order, I’ll list all of my favorites.

My Favorite Countries in the World

Greece has been on my mind since I fell in love with the island of Lesvos in 2017. After leaving Greece, I couldn’t shake it from my memory. Traveling around other Mediterranean countries the thought crossed my mind “It’s nice here, but it’s certainly not Greece.” I know that’s the wrong mentality, but hey, those are my feelings, and feelings can’t be wrong, right? So apologies to lovely Albania and Malta, but if I only had one week to live, I’d be eating souvlaki and sipping a thick Greek coffee in some vine-shaded village square somewhere in the Aegean.

Malaysia is perhaps the best food country in the world . I say that because it is home to three outstanding cuisines of its diverse population. Malay, Chinese, and Indian cuisine are all readily available and because of Malaysia’s eating out culture, meals are affordably priced for locals. Much of the best food is served at mom and pop cafes or from carts at food centers. But Malaysia is more than just food. Its mix of indigenous and other cultures means different customs, holidays, religions, and so on. Plus, I love the architecture of the former Straits Settlements on peninsular Malaysia ( Penang , Malacca). On Borneo, there is some nice wildlife viewing (albeit under threat from agriculture/habitat loss)

I entered into the world of Central Asia in my early twenties as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Uzbekistan. While I absolutely loved my host country and its people (perhaps the world’s most hospitable) I also grew very fond of Kyrgyzstan . It’s a land of high-altitude pastures and cool, clear lakes. One of snow-capped peaks and bubbling hot springs and people willing to invite a stranger into their yurt for a cup of fermented mare’s milk. I like Kyrgyzstan so much that I wanted to take other travelers there and now I do. If this sounds like your cup of kumis then you should join us. See my Kyrgyzstan trekking trip for more info.

I fell in love with the landscape and culture of Spain on my first Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in 2005. I returned in 2008 for another Camino (Via de la Plata) and to stay to teach English. I ended up living there for about a year, enjoying tapas and wine after work, exploring the neighborhoods of Madrid, and getting into the rhythm of the Spanish lifestyle. The typical traveler to Spain enjoys the incredible cuisine here, the diversity of the country’s distinct regions, its rich art and architectural heritage, and the history of its small cities, towns, and villages throughout the countryside.

Spain’s neighbor to the west is another of my favorite places. You can tell I have an affinity for this part of the world. Portugal’s historical towns and cities are intriguing and its coastline is delectable . Portuguese are proud but very open to outsiders and well-educated. There’s a bit of Roman history here, some top-notch winemaking, delicious food, and thought-provoking street art. But most of all for me it’s the atmosphere of Portugal that I love most, and that’s what sticks out in my memory. I just loved being there.

South Korea

I’ve been to South Korea on several occasions. I’ve taught English there, lived there temporarily on other occasions, and explored most corners of this small mountainous peninsula. Koreans have a strong identity tied to their land, cuisine, and language . There are many distinct aspects of Korean society and the Korean people are proud of their heritage . They hold on to many of their traditions while embracing change and modernity in a fast-paced world . I may be biased because I married a Korean, but this is an intelligent society with a high quality of life.

Peru is too intriguing a place not to mention in this list. What’s so great about Peru is the diversity of experiences one can have there. You can ride a dune buggy across towering dunes, admire the work of ancient pre-Incan civilizations, surf some of the Pacific’s best waves, see an enormous array of wildlife, venture into the Amazon (which makes up a third of Peru!), and take on some of the best trekking in the Andes . Eat your way through Lima , South America’s foodie city. And did I mention Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley? Enough Inca sights and Quechua culture to take a week of your time. 

I traveled for a few weeks in Syria before the civil war. What I remember most is how completely foreign everything was to me. Not even the same numbers system was used! But also I remember how welcoming people were. Syrians chatted with me, bought me lunch, and helped me find my way when I was lost. It is a country with a magnificent cultural heritage, extraordinary ruins (much of which have been destroyed in the war), a vast desert landscape, and some of the oldest inhabited cities on the planet.

The digital nomad in me fell in love with Romania and wanted to stay. Who doesn’t love affordability and lightning-fast internet ? But Romania is much more. What interests me most are the old Saxon towns and villages of Transylvania, the beauty of the Carpathian Mountains, and the folk traditions of Maramureș. Add to that some delicious Romanian food and a trip to the capital Bucharest, which has an enticing mix of architecture from numerous eras. The combination was enough for me to work remotely from Bucharest for a month and develop a small group tour to Transylvania .

The thing that everyone notices about Japan is its seamless fusion of the old and new. In addition to that, the Japanese do urban society like no one else. Japanese cities work flawlessly. They are efficient, clean, crowded, and somehow quiet. But I also love hiking in Japan’s mountains, following its pilgrim trails, soaking in its hot springs , sipping its bowls of noodles, and eating its fresh seafood catch. I am also most happy riding Japanese trains. One thing I’d like people to know is that Japan is not as expensive as they think.

There is so much packed into little Georgia : the subtropical Black Sea coast, a productive wine-country, a very intriguing and revered cuisine, ancient churches, Ottoman bathhouses, breakaway republics, mountain fortresses, and alpine hiking. One of my favorite adventures in Georgia was a trip to Svaneti, a mountainous region inhabited by the Svans, known for its stone towers. I haven’t been to Georgia since 2007, but my travels there were some of my most memorable and adventurous.

Taiwan has got a great standard of living, some of the world’s best food , easy and comfortable transportation, a rich culture, fun outdoor activities, safe cities, and very helpful and friendly residents. When you’ve got your fill of urban adventure in Taipei, head to the east coast for hiking in the mountains, soaking in hot springs, cycling through rice paddies, tasting tea, and renting a scooter for more fun. A friend invited me to stay with him in Tainan and I explored the cultural side of Taiwan, visiting lots of temples in this historic capital.

The United States

While it seems funny to list my home country after years of living and traveling outside of the USA, the diversity of geography in the world’s fourth-biggest country is staggering. I’m never a person to think “mine is best” but after traveling the world for two decades, one of my favorite places is the destination of one of my earliest vacations: the American West. The high-elevation Colorado Plateau is home to numerous National Parks, unbelievable geological land formations, dinosaur graveyards, outstanding outdoor sports, Native American cultures, and so much more. Additionally, the old-growth forests of California, Oregon, and Washington State are among the most magical places on the earth. When you’re alone, looking up in a Redwood grove, you’ll understand.

If you forced me to narrow it down to one country to call my favorite, I’d have to choose India . The diversity of this sub-continent is astonishing. You can go from crossing deserts by camel to meditating in yoga ashrams in the foothills of the Himalaya to birdwatching from boats in the backwaters of tropical Kerala. India has 122 major languages and more than 2,000 ethnic groups ! Wherever you go in India there is always something interesting to experience – and that’s why I never tire of this fascinating country. I will have never visited India enough times. 

As you can see, I have a lot of favorites. This is why the question is so difficult to answer. When I travel, I look for things to love about the place – its people, history, food, or landscape. There have been very few places I’ve left thinking that I’ve never wanted to return. Here are some additional favorites that didn’t make the first cut.

Honorable Mention:

Uzbekistan – I lived in Uzbekistan for two years and crisscrossed the country countless times. Silk Road cities, good food, and the most open and hospitable people on the planet.

Nepal – The soaring Himalaya, the magnificent Himalaya, the extraordinary Himalaya. These mountains make me cry tears of joy.

Bangladesh – I think it was a week before I saw another foreigner in Bangladesh . Bangladeshis are the most friendly and enthusiastic about meeting outsiders. This trip has remained close to my heart – from tea country to the Sundarbans Mangrove forest.

Egypt – I have great memories of adventures in Egypt in 2007. Superb diving in the Red Sea, chaotic urban adventures in Cairo and Alexandria, far-out oases, and mind-blowing archeology. 

Mongolia – The wide-open landscapes you’ve only dreamed about! Real living nomadic cultures, ancient Buddhist traditions, dinosaur bones, and an autumn golden eagle festival in Western Mongolia .

Italy – If you want the best of the best in Europe, it’s no contest. Italy is packed with world-class art and architecture, an incredible food culture, stunning medieval towns, ruins of ancient civilizations, and passionate Italians.

Tunisia – Old school backpacking adventures , incredible archeology, some really friendly people, and super-cheap prices.

Israel and the Palestinian Territories – Fascinating religious history, intriguing current events, and some of the tastiest food in the Middle East.

Mexico – A tremendous diversity of landscapes and cultures are packed into Mexico. And the food is world-renowned.

Colombia – Soaring mountains, two coastlines, coffee country, Amazon jungle, colonial villages, and the warmest people in South America. What more could you want?

China – Get lost on Planet China. The largest population on earth is home to hundreds of ethnic minorities, spectacular landscapes, and towns that rarely, if ever, see foreigners.

Bosnia & Herzegovina – East meets west in Europe. B & H is steeped in Ottoman history and Sarajevo and Mostar are two places you’ll never forget.

Bhutan – If you wanted to create a serene and peaceful sanctuary to be a Buddhist monk, don’t bother. It already exists. Welcome to Bhutan, last great Himalayan kingdom .

Poland – Although Poland suffered greatly in a World War tug of war between Germany and Russia, there are lovely historic cities here with great architecture. And my Slavic soul feels at home in Poland.

Switzerland – Besides the obvious – MOUNTAINS – Switzerland is the intersection of Romantic and Germanic Europe – making Switzerland a cultural and natural highlight of Europe.

Turkey – I spent about four weeks traveling around Turkey and there was still plenty more to see. Most travelers miss Eastern Turkey. Fascinating culture and people that take food very seriously.

Myanmar – Super friendly people, beautiful landscapes, and Bagan. You may not like the government, but you’ll love everything else about Myanmar. Experience the best of Myanmar on my good friend’s Un-Tour to Myanmar .

The United Kingdom – After traveling in Asia and Europe so much I appreciate being able to connect with people in the UK with the same mother tongue.

Future Favorite Countries – Places I haven’t been to yet

I’m sure there are plenty of future favorite countries out there that I just don’t know yet. The way travelers talk about some countries make me want to drop what I’m doing and book a ticket. High on my list are Iran, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Morocco, Uganda, Lesoto, Rwanda, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile. I could include many more on this list.

The Natural Beauty Of Switzerland – Travel

The natural beauty of Switzerland will take your breath away, and I’m sharing my travel experiences and tips in this post.

Have you had a chance to read my recent posts on London ( HERE ) and on packing for 2 weeks with only a carry-on ( HERE )? If you love travel or armchair travel this is the next in my series. After this get ready for the city in Europe that especially has my heart! It’s the one that I probably know most about as a frequent visitor! But Switzerland has been calling to me for awhile for several personal reasons.

The photo above looks like I’m getting all “The Sound Of Music” with you (which was filmed in Austria). I shot this from a train and this is the sort of pastoral beauty you will often see in Switzerland! I spent time in the French side of Switzerland in a town called Champéry with my French cousins in my youth. My husband on the other hand lived as a child in the Swiss German town of Zurich . We have been back to Switzerland as a family with our kids, but wanted to head back and spend a week while we had the chance.

First of all, we flew from London to Zurich after I researched the best way to get there. With having to go through France and a typical French strike going on, flying was easier, faster and actually less expensive. Zurich is one of those great European cities that is culturally historic, vibrant, friendly and run as efficiently as a Swiss watch. It’s one of the wealthiest cities in the world and a financial hub that is far from prim and staid.  We found it really easy to navigate and the train and trolley systems run often.

The natural beauty of Switzerland – Travel Tips

• If flying it’s best to check the individual airlines for baggage restrictions. My normal size carry-on was considered too large for SwissAir and had to be checked. There was also a restriction of one clear plastic bag of toiletries and customs were quite strict.
• Download city maps on your iPhone or smartphone. It’s so much easier to do rather than the old way of a pocket map.
• Be sure to check with your carrier about your phone carrying charges overseas. We took out a plan with ours that cost just $10 a day and included everything including phone calls.

Traveling in Zurich

Old town Zurich has been kept beautifully in tact and is filled with hip and trendy stores and most noteworthy the cafes.

• Zurich has not only a wonderful train system, but the main train station is vast and full of convenience. Unfortunately I caught a virus and had to go to the doctor which was located in the train station in a friendly clinic. She was very thorough and it was inexpensive for treatment.

With train travel so easy we hopped on a train and spent a few hours in Lucerne and stopped for lunch. If you are headed to Switzerland be sure to travel by train!

And now on to more of the the natural beauty of Switzerland that I’ve been talking about on our way to the Swiss Alps. I’ve put together a little video for you below.

The Swiss Alps by train and really I can’t think of enough adjectives to describe the majestic beautiful! A bus in addition to two trains took us to the mountain of Jungfraujoch at 11,500 feet. We aren’t tour people but it’s hard to get to, so we opted for THIS day tour to get there.

It just happened to be our anniversary and a great way to spend it…don’t you think? Notice…I’m holding the ropes because I don’t speak snow or ice living in Florida, lol.

In conclusion, was this trip worthwhile? Absolutely, despite the fact that the air is thin and as a result my asthma acted up. If Europe is in your plans, I encourage you to see the natural beauty of Switzerland for yourself. Feel free to ask questions,…I’m only an email away! Thank you for sharing! My husband and I spent our honeymoon there 34 years age this May. We visited many of the places you did. It brings back such great memories. Makes me want to go back.

My stepson was in Switzerland over his winter break from college and he really loved it. He sent us lots of photos and it looks so beautiful there.

We have been to Switzerland couple of times. The country is so beautiful. Post cards don’t do it justice. We loved going there.

My brother-in-law and his family visited Switzerland a couple of years ago and I enjoyed looking at all their beautiful photos. Now I need to read your post on packing for two weeks in a carry-on. I always overpack when I travel.

I’ve always wanted to visit Switzerland! It looks so beautiful! I also love the convenience that the main train station has!

I’ve been to Switzerland several times and I always tell people that it really does look like every picture and postcard you’ve ever seen. Lucerne is my favorite but Geneva follows close behind because of the many places you can go by boat for a day. Our biggest Swiss adventure was traveling over the St. Gotthard Pass during a huge rain storm because the Gotthard Road Tunnel was closed due to flooding. Hundreds of waterfalls had formed because the rain was coming down so hard and fast. It was harrowing!

Switzerland is indeed a heaven on earth. The stuff of dreams. Have been there twice but want to head back again and again, cannot have enough of this beautiful country.

Sign me up! The beauty is breathtaking and I don’t think I’d really ever eat to leave! Lots of Swiss cheese for sure!

Well, that is the topmost reason why Switzerland is my all-time favourite European destination!

The amazing natural beauty of the majestic Alps, the placid lakes, quaint villages, cosmopolitan cities and towering castles – that’s just some of what Switzerland has to offer. Add to it some shopping, wine tasting, delectable chocolates and cheeses and it gets even better. To get the true flavour of this beautiful country, here are some of the best places in Switzerland .

Geneva  is slick and cosmopolitan and maybe that’s why it is often mistaken to be the capital of Switzerland. A beautiful city in the French speaking part of Switzerland, with the amazing backdrop of the Alps, Geneva is known for many things apart from watches, chocolate, cutlery and of course, its lakeside scenery. This historical city is the site for many UN agencies. St. Pierre, a medieval cathedral dating back to the 4 th  century is the highlight of the Old Town. Lake Geneva, with the impressive 140 metre fountain Jet d’Eau, is the symbol of Geneva. Enjoy the view of the snow covered Mt. Blanc at 4,810 metres, making it the highest peak in Europe. Go for many nature walks along the lake and through the Bois-de-la-Bâtie, a 30 acre forest in the middle of the city. Visit one of the many chocolatiers in Geneva to get a fill of your sweet cravings. Geneva is also home to CERN, the largest scientific research centre in the world, where the “God Particle” was found.

Zurich  is Switzerland’s financial district and a city that has the best standard of living in the world. You could walk down the Bahnhofstrasse, which is probably one of the best shopping streets in the world. It’s also a great place to enjoy the outdoors. Take a boat cruise on either Lake Zurich or the Limmat River or just explore the city on a bike. The city has a lot to offer historically as well, with the magnificent St. Peter’s Church. With over 80 playgrounds, Zurich is a paradise for kids.

On the banks of Lake Lucerne in the German speaking part of Switzerland, Lucerne  has an old feel to it. This charming city has beautiful painted frescos on its public buildings and churches. You can get around the entire town on foot and stroll across the beautiful Chapel Bridge, which is bedecked with flowers. Legend has it that an angel showed the first settlers where to build the chapel! Enjoy the Loewendenkmal Lion Monument, a magnificent work of art and one of the most photographed monuments in the world. About 30 kilometres from Lucerne is Engelberg where at the cheese factory, you can see how delicious Swiss cheeses are made.

Interlaken and Jungfraujoch

Scenic Interlaken  near Bern, the capital of Switzerland, is the place you start your journey up to Jungfraujoch, the highest point in the Alps that is reachable by train. You will enjoy the high Alpine wonderland of ice, snow and rock, which you can admire from the viewing platforms on the Aletsch Glacier or in the Ice Palace. It is also the base for mountaineers to start their treks up many a mountain in the Jungfrau region. It’s a great place for backpackers too with many adventure activities like canoeing, paragliding, sky diving and skiing. A short distance from Interlaken is the St. Beatus Caves. These can be reached by boat or by taking a 90 minute walk on a scenic pathway.

This is the site of the world’s first revolving cable cars. Passing through three stages, the cable car connects Engelberg to the summit of Klein Titlis at a height of 3,028 metres. You can visit an illuminated glacier cave and also walk on the highest elevation suspension bridge in Europe for magnificent views of the Alps. With more than 80 kilometres of pristine ski slopes of varying inclines, it’s a great place for skiing enthusiasts in the winter. During the summer, it’s equally thrilling for outdoor enthusiasts and hikers. Undoubtedly, Mt. Titlis deservedly qualifies as one of the best places in Switzerland.

My Switzerland

Layla lives in Jensen Beach in Florida/USA and is homeschooled. Below you will find Layla's fabulous essay called 'My Switzerland'.

I am half American and half Swiss. Switzerland is a small country, but it contains four languages and over 26 dialects. My family is from the northern part of Switzerland. From Basel you can walk easily into France and Germany.

One of my favorite places to go is Birsköpfli on the Rhine river, a place to bike, walk, and there is a barefoot trail. A barefoot trail is like a massage for your feet. You walk on grass, sand, mud, gravel and wood. Swiss people are reserved, but polite. They love wine, cheese, and bread. Something funny about Switzerland is that in many multi apartment buildings there is one washer and no dryer. Everybody has to share a laundry room. There is a strict schedule and every family usually gets only two days to complete their laundry. In Switzerland there is great public transport. Most people either go by tram, bike, or bus. If you wanted, you could take a bicycle around the whole of Switzerland in three weeks on a bicycle trail, almost never going on the road. Throughout the whole country there are trail signs that tell you how far it is to the next bus or train station and restaurant.

I like to visit Switzerland because I can walk to all my aunts, uncles and cousins in an about an hour. I look forward to garden parties where we talk and eat Klöpfer, a sausage that when cooked, it explodes. In the store you can find a long wall with many various chocolate bars. My favorite is the white milk chocolate. The chocolate in Switzerland is very good because the cows eat grass, and the cocoa beans go through a long process.

One of my favorite holidays is Christmas. In Switzerland the Santa Claus comes with a helper. His name is Schmutzli. He wears a dark coat with a hood. You can't see his face. Santa Claus comes with a donkey, not riding in a sled with deer pulling him. He carries a whip made out of small branches to scare the bad kids. He comes on December 6th to the town square and distributes mandarins, nuts and chocolate money. All the things I have mentioned I miss about Switzerland and I hope to go back someday soon.

Talk About Your Favorite Country: IELTS Speaking (Cue Card With Example Answer)

In part two of your IELTS Speaking test, you might be asked to talk about your favorite country. The cue card will probably read: “Describe your favorite country.” And it will give you some suggestions on what to say.

Let’s look at how to answer this question for a band-seven score. Below, you can also read a good example answer ( go straight to the answer here ).  

Which Country to Choose

For a question like this, it’s best to talk about a country you’ve already been to. This is because you can quickly remember your time there and talk about that.

However, you might want to talk about a country that you haven’t been to, but would like to visit. Or you could choose a country you love because of its movies, art, culture, weather, or food.  

Of course, you can also talk about your own country, which is probably the simplest option of all.  

In part two of IELTS Speaking, always choose the option that’s easiest to talk about.  

What You Can Say

When you’ve chosen a country, here are some things you can talk about:

• The culture
• The weather
• What this country is famous for  
• Why it’s a perfect place for vacation
• Sights to see there
• Things to do there
• Why it’s the perfect place to live
• Cost of living
• Quality of life
• Your experience when you visited that country
• Some interesting experiences you had there
• Why you want to visit that country
• How often you go there
• How long you’ve lived there
• Anything else that comes to mind

Tell a Story

In part two, you should always try to tell a short story. With a simple story, you can:

• Keep speaking easily for 30 seconds or more
• Show that you can use good past tenses (past simple, past continuous, past perfect…)

It’s easy to tell a story about a country because you can simply remember when you visited that country and say what you did there.   So before your IELTS test, prepare a few stories about countries you’ve visited.  

You can then use these stories for lots of different questions. For example, you can use your country story for questions about vacations, adventures, travel, interesting experiences, food, family, friends, and more.  

Focus on Vocabulary

In part two of your IELTS Speaking test, you can get a band-7 score by:

• Talking for two minutes without hesitation
• Using some interesting, less common vocabulary
• Not making too many mistakes

One great way to prepare interesting vocabulary is to memorize word groups .  

A word group is a collection of interesting words, phrases, and idioms that describe one aspect of a place, person, activity, or thing.

For example, you might prepare a ‘busy place’ word group that includes words like: ‘bustling, hectic, crowded, industrious, fast pace of life, as busy as a bee…’ and more.

You can then use this same ‘busy place’ word group to answer many different questions about places. For example:

• Describe your favorite city
• Describe your hometown
• Describe a place you like to visit
• Describe a vacation you went on  
• Describe a city you’d like to live in
• And many more part-two questions

So for this ‘favorite country’ question, it’s a good idea to prepare a word group now that could describe a country you like.  

In the example answer below, you’ll see a ‘natural place’ word group in use.  

Use Anki App to Memorize Words

One of the fastest and surest ways to memorize English vocabulary is to use a good flashcard app like Anki App.  

You can also use other apps like Cake , Elsa , and IELTS Prep App to help you learn faster.  

Now, let’s look at a good example answer…

Favorite Country Cue Card

Describe your favorite country.

You should say:

• What this country it is
• If you’ve visited this country before  
• What this country is known for

And say why this is your favorite country.

I’m going to talk about Switzerland, which is a stunningly beautiful country in the center of Europe. I love Switzerland because it has an abundance of natural beauty . Most of the country is covered by mountainous terrain and there’s so much magnificent scenery with endless  spectacular views to enjoy. The whole country is full of impressive mountains and glistening lakes .  

I’ve only visited Switzerland once in my life, but I will always remember that vacation. I went on a camping trip there with my family about seven years ago. I remember driving through the picturesque mountains, soaking up the incredible views . It was a real escape into the great outdoors .  

We stayed at many campsites beside the quiet waters of beautiful lakes. It was wonderful to wake up in the morning to the sound of birdsong . I recall we stayed in one idyllic natural spot for many days, right next to the water. I remember sitting outside our tent in the morning, enjoying a cup of tea and looking at a breathtaking view of a massive snowcapped mountain .  

We went for many hikes through forests and meadows , enjoying the fresh air, scents of the forest, and beautiful fields of wildflowers . There were many cows with little bells around their necks and we could always hear the bells ringing gently.  

I think Switzerland is a fantastic place to live because it’s very safe there. To be honest, Switzerland is a little expensive and the food isn’t the best food in Europe. But when you’re there, it’s really easy to drive to neighboring countries like Italy, France, or Germany because Switzerland is right in the middle of Europe and it’s a very small country. So that’s another reason why I like it.

Don’t worry. When you’ve memorized a few good word groups, you’ll be amazed at how easily you can give a fantastic answer.

Try to answer this question now yourself.

First, choose a country you can talk about easily (preferably a country you’ve visited before).  

Next, choose a word group you can use to describe that country. You could think of your own word group or use a word group from this site (see many choices for ‘place’ word groups here ).

Finally, prepare a story about that country.

Now it’s time to answer the question…

Set up the recorder on your phone and ask yourself to talk about your favorite country.

Prepare your ideas for one minute, then start talking. Try to talk for two minutes without hesitation.

When you’ve finished, listen to your recording, and see if you can improve it with more interesting vocabulary.

Keep repeating this process. This is a wonderful way to get ready for part two of your IELTS Speaking test.

21 Photos That Will Make You Want to Go to Switzerland

Prior to setting out in 2007, I explored the world on the maps of Risk and Axis and Allies. Via dice rolling and troop movements I was able to explore most of the world, but there was also one place I couldn’t go: Switzerland . It was a big greyed out area on the map where I could never move my plastic units.

When I was invited to Switzerland in the summer of 2011 I jumped at the chance to go. It was a country I have always been fascinated by. During my trip I visited the cities of Bern, Basel and Zurich.

I left Switzerland with a desire to return, which I will be doing later this year. I’ll be in Lucern for the 2012 Adventure Travel Summit and TBEX Europe. I’ll be getting a rail pass which I hope to use before the conferences to visit all the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Switzerland in 8 days!

I worked in St. Moritz many years ago, and these pics brought back so many memories of a stunning country. The people are a bit like a great aunt. Hard to get to know, rather aloof, until you get the beer down their necks!!

Love Switzerland! Great place with nice people, but expensive. Was there on a snowboarding vacation and had a blast. The mountains and lakes are very picturesque.

Switzerland is gorgeous, it’s been on the top of our list of places to check out since we did a short vaca in Belgium. Lovely pics!

Gorgeous shots!!! My fave is the 1st one though. And that chocolate looks sublime.

The photos of the chocolate look especially lovely. We are planning to go to Switzerland in the Summer to visit some friends that are there for work, it look very beautiful.

We visited family friends in Switzerland in the summer of 2000. If the opportunity presents itself, try to visit Solothurn, which still includes the walls of the old city.

Why Sweden Stopped Pretending to Be Switzerland

My two home countries were famously neutral. but they were never the same.

Can we, and should we, ever really be neutral? In a new series, Zócalo explores the idea of neutrality—in politics, sports, gender, journalism, and more. For the inaugural essay, Swedish-Swiss journalist Bruno Kaufmann examines how his two famously “neutral” home countries diverge.

For most of my life, people have offered joyful shouts when I have presented either of my passports, or answered the question of where I come from. They have positive associations with my two home countries, Switzerland and Sweden, even if they confused them for each other.

I was born and raised in Switzerland. I have spent most of my adult life in Sweden. So, when I’m pressed to pick between them, I simply answer, “Choose whatever you want.”

That makes some sense, because my countries have some things in common. They are two of Europe’s—and the world’s—oldest and most advanced democracies. For a long time, they also were both neutral countries—but they weren’t neutral in the same way.

Both adhered to the core tenet of neutrality: for at least two centuries, neither engaged in wars. “This commonality sometimes made [the two countries] forget our big differences,” said Jacob Westberg, a professor of war studies and military history at the Swedish Defense University in Stockholm.

But the last few years have changed things for these countries, and for neutrality itself.

This Zeitenwende, or tipping point, began with Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine in 2022. That same year, Westberg published “How Small States Manage to Stay out of Wars: Explaining Sweden’s 200 Years of Peace,” in which he described the success story of both Sweden and Switzerland (along with other small countries) as neutral states.

But in 2023, he published a new book called Security Strategies: From Neutrality Policy to the Application for NATO Membership (currently only available in Swedish) that charts Sweden’s path to renouncing neutrality and joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), an organization aligned with U.S. interests.

Sweden was prompted to make the epochal shift of stepping away from neutrality by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Putin’s threats against Europe. On March 7 of this year Sweden became a NATO member.

That means that Sweden is no longer a neutral country. (I repeat, for those who confuse the two, Sweden is no longer a neutral country. President Joe Biden mistakenly announced that “Switzerland” wanted to join NATO.)

So, my two countries are parting ways. Neutrality no more, says Stockholm, teaming up with Washington, while Bern clings to its successful formula—for now.

But this divergence isn’t a surprise because of the different visions of neutrality that Switzerland and Sweden have long held. This divergence stems from three big differences—those of history, practice, and geography.

First: History. Switzerland and Sweden both ended their warmongering at the 1815 Congress of Vienna, where “neutrality” for the first time entered international law. But the countries had distinct rationales for laying down their arms.

For centuries, Swedish monarchs had tried to defend their kingdom by engaging in foreign wars against their neighbors. They finally abandoned this strategy after losing Finland and being defeated by Russia in 1809.

Switzerland, meanwhile, was never an imperial power. After it lost its final battle abroad just over the border in northern Italy in 1515, the states of the old Swiss confederation spent centuries engaged in searching for balance domestically.

This internal scrutiny ended at that same Congress of Vienna . That was when Tsar Alexander I of Russia proposed that Switzerland, which at that time was a federation of 22 states, become a neutral country. Together they later funded modern “Switzerland” with a central government, an army, and its own currency. It’s been that way ever since.

Second: Practice. Over the centuries, Switzerland and Sweden developed very different forms of military neutrality. In the Swiss case, according to former president and foreign minister Ignazio Cassis, neutrality was based on the Hague Principles, which include “no participation in wars; international cooperation but no membership in any military alliance; no provision of troops or weapons to warring parties and no granting of transition rights.”

This comprehensive approach to neutrality kept Switzerland not only out of military alliances but also outside international organizations. Switzerland only joined the United Nations in 2002, and only by referendum. Switzerland is still not a member of the European Union.

Where the Swiss approach is sometimes called “integral,” Sweden’s version of neutrality involves what’s termed the “differential approach.” Sweden might foreswear wars, but it had a very active foreign policy. Sweden was a founding member of the United Nations in 1946 and joined the European Union in 1994, after a vote of the people.

Third: Geography. Look at any map, and you’ll see few reasons to confuse my two home countries.

Switzerland occupies a tiny landlocked area of approximately 41,000 square kilometers in the heart of continental Europe. This is bigger than Maryland but smaller than West Virginia. It is encircled by friendly democracies, of which all but one—the micro-state of Liechtenstein—belongs to the European Union.

Sweden has more territory to defend, and less friendly neighbors—specifically, Russia. Located in the far north of Europe, the country expands over an area of more than 450,000 square kilometers, making it slightly larger than California. It shares a maritime border, the Baltic Sea, with Russia, which maintains large military bases in Baltiysk (in the exclave of Kaliningrad) and outside St. Petersburg. In addition, the main Swedish island of Gotland is surrounded by international waters that are used by Russian military vehicles.

All these factors have given the two countries different tipping points on neutrality.

After Russia’s full-scale attack against its neighbor Ukraine on February 22, 2022, then-Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson initially rejected calls for a change to its neutral position.

“If Sweden were to choose to send in an application to join NATO in the current situation, it would further destabilize this area of Europe and increase tensions,” she told me and other reporters on March 8, 2022.

But just a few weeks later, her declaration was replaced by the announcement— in a historic press briefing held together with then-Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin —that both Nordic countries would apply for full NATO membership at the same time.

(That the formerly neutral Finland was accepted much earlier to NATO than Sweden is a story for another time, also based on history, practice, and geography).

As Sweden applied to NATO, and as Switzerland continued on its neutrality track, I started feeling new tension between my countries. On television, Swedish commentator Edward af Sillén expressed profound annoyance at the Swiss decision to make the anti-war song “Watergun” its official 2023 entry to the Eurovision Song Contest.  Then in late 2023, the Swedish tourist board started a global campaign intended to make the world understand that Sweden is not Switzerland.  Of course, with Sweden having joined NATO in March, any confusion about which of my two home countries is which should be over. At least for the time being.

Hello! In this post, I’m going to deal with IELTS Speaking Part 2 , also known as the cue card or topic card section. One of the most common topics of IELTS speaking is the country which you wish to visit . Here, I’m providing a sample answer which you can learn or follow and update according to your choice.

Model Answer:

There are many countries where I’ve had dreams of going to but the country which I have always wished to go but have not visited until now is Italy. So, I would like to talk about it. I’ve been dreaming of having a trip to Italy for more than 4-5 years. I’ll certainly visit the country as soon as my study is complete.

Italy is located in the Southern part of Europe. Rome, the prime city and the Capital of Italy has been the most important political and spiritual center of Western civilization. It has been serving as the capital of the both Roman Empire and Christianity. It is a famous country for its wonderful landmarks. I’d like to visit there to enjoy the museums, arts, streets, culture and other attractive places. Another reason I want to go there is to visit the Vatican City.

One of my favorite writers in the world is Dan Brown who has written extensively about this city in his book Angels and Daemons . I have also heard various stories and historical facts about this country and being face to face with them would be a great pleasure for me. Places like Cecily, Venice, Rome, and Florence will definitely fulfill my long wish. There are ample things to see: arts, museums, St. Peter’s Basilica, Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pissa, Florence Cathedral, Milan Cathedral, Piazza SanMarco, Roman Forum, Circus Maximus, and many more.

Once upon a time Italy was one of the most superior territories and contained lots of historically significant places to visit. I’ve heard and studied about those places so many times and heard stories from many of my friends that having a trip to this country has become a foremost desire for me. And I’m quite sure that this trip to Italy will be one of the finest moments of my life which I’ll cherish in my heart for a long time. And I’m quite optimistic about visiting this country very recently.

I moved back to the US from Switzerland when my daughter was 3. My suburban neighbors don't get the way I parent.

Ever since returning to the Chicago area after living for almost a decade in Switzerland , my nice suburban neighbors have scrutinized my parenting. The biggest shock to the community was when I decided that my 7-year-old daughter was responsible enough to walk five blocks to school alone.

"You know, we'd be happy to drive her in the morning," said one neighbor.

I've discovered that these parents are all lovely people and well-meaning, but they are also part of something my husband and I still — even after being "home" for a decade — can't bring ourselves to join: the school car line.

The car line at our neighborhood elementary school is seemingly never-ending. It snakes around the corner of an otherwise beautiful centuries-old brick school. In the cars sit devoted parents who want the best for their children , which also seems to include polluting the air and constipating the streets.

But beyond the environmental consequences of the car line, something feels even more detrimental: American parenting culture.

Opposite the Swiss version, which promotes independence from the time a child can walk, American parenting culture seems to say to the child: I'm in charge of getting you to school — you have no agency. If it's cold, I'll keep you warm. If it's raining, I'll keep you dry. If it's snowing, sure, wear your sneakers, I'll drive you. If you're late for school, it's not your fault, it's mine.

But in Switzerland , where I learned to parent, children as young as five walk or bike to school alone. They wear rubber pants and boots if it's raining. If there is ice on the streets, they fall and get up again. Parents don't drive children to school or hover at the playground while constantly telling their child to share, to say they're sorry, to be nice.

Instead, I found that Swiss parenting basically boils down to a concept of benign neglect, where kids learn to manage themselves. And since I became a parent in Switzerland, I internalized this parenting style — and learned to appreciate it to a point where I still practice it.

When I first moved to Switzerland, I was homesick

My husband and I moved to Switzerland in 2006 for a job opportunity. When Swiss people didn't honor my need for American-sized personal space , pushing ahead of me while getting on the train, I missed the polite way many Americans wait in line. When my Swiss neighbor took a year to tell me her first name, I would pine for the random American stranger who would tell me their life story with little formality or filter. And when the stores weren't open on Sunday, I silently wished for a Target shopping spree.

But after a few years, even my Swiss friends would tell me that I was more Swiss than the Swiss. My husband and I could eat my neighbor's 30 slices of raclette in one sitting. Instead of wishing I was shopping, I hiked on Sundays and actively sought out new routes.

Parenting culture in the US was the biggest shock when I returned

I figured that moving back to my own country eight and a half years later would be hard — especially because we were relocating to care for a sick parent. But I figured that I'd eventually get over the initial cultural shock. And for the most part, I have.

I love owning a house — something that's almost impossible to do in Switzerland, where many live in tiny apartments with shared laundry rooms. I love having casual conversations with people at Trader Joe's . And I appreciate the big, wide world of American personal space and also treasure living close to my parents. But when it comes to parenting culture, I still struggle to accept the lack of freedom we give our children, perhaps because it's the very thing we say our country stands for.

Somehow, at the same time Americans celebrate "freedom," the parents who give their children just that are somehow viewed as foreign.

Now 12 years old, my daughter still gets comments from parents about walking to school alone. The gym teacher indirectly does too; she sends notes home when my daughter is the only one wearing snow boots instead of gym shoes.

Today, my daughter has freedoms that many of her coddled American peers do not. That's because instead of constantly wondering "what can I do for my daughter?" My internalized Swissness reminds me to ask something more important; namely, "what should I not do for her?" This isn't lazy parenting , but rather a deeply thoughtful process about how I can raise a child who is self-sufficient.

Recently, I suffered from Covid for six weeks. Then for about six more weeks it was almost impossible for me to rise in the mornings. One day, I opened my eyes and realized it was 8:15 a.m. In a panic, I stumbled downstairs and that's when I saw it: Coat gone. Backpack gone. Daughter gone. Even though I had been sleeping, I had still somehow been parenting: My daughter had gone to school before I'd even gotten out of bed.

And if that isn't a Swiss parenting win in an otherwise American world, then I don't know what is.

Who Are the Favorites to Win Eurovision?

Some of the buzziest acts taking part in Saturday’s final hail from Croatia, Israel and Ukraine.

On Saturday, acts representing 25 countries will compete at the Eurovision Song Contest, the high-camp competition that is also world’s most watched cultural event. The winner is chosen by a combination of votes from music industry juries in participating countries and viewers watching at home. Sometimes, they reflect the strength of individual performances; other times, politics comes into play.

Who is most likely to triumph at this year’s event in Malmo, Sweden?

It won’t be Joost Klein, a madcap musician representing the Netherlands. On Saturday morning, Swedish police said in a statement that they were investigating a man “suspected of unlawful threats” toward a Eurovision employee, and that officers had passed on a file to prosecutors. A few hours later, Eurovision organizers said in a statement that it was Klein under investigation, and that “it would not be appropriate” for him to compete while a legal process was underway.

Here are the five acts who may have the best chance at winning, based on European bookmakers’ odds and online chatter.

Baby Lasagna

The bookmakers’ favorite is Baby Lasagna, representing Croatia, with “Rim Tim Tagi Dim” — a madcap three-minute mixture of heavy metal and dance music.

The song begins with Baby Lasagna — real name Marko Purisic — singing to his mother that he’s a “big boy now” and wants to leave his family’s village for the city. “I’m going away and I sold my cow,” he sings, before calling for the villagers to join him one last time in a local folk dance.

In a recent interview, Purisic said that although the song may seem a little ridiculous, it was also a serious attempt to draw attention to Croatia’s ongoing problem with youth emigration.

Purisic said that winning the song contest wasn’t his aim. After a long career as a rock songwriter for hire, he said, last year he considered changing tack, and applied for a stable job in Croatia’s tourism industry. But with the success of “Rim Tim Tagi Dim” — which has had millions of views on YouTube — he now hoped to build a career as Baby Lasagna, he said. “If I do that,” he added, “then I win.”

By Saturday morning in Malmo, Israel’s representative, Eden Golan, had risen in European bookmakers’ rankings to be second mostly likely to win, according to Oddschecker , a betting aggregator.

This comes after months of campaigning from pro-Palestinian groups and some Eurovision fans to get the contest’s organizers, the European Broadcasting Union, to ban Golan from taking part because of Israel’s war in Gaza.

These tensions were clear at Golan’s semifinal performance on Thursday, when some audience members booed, while others tried to drown them out with cheers.

Golan’s song was initially called “October Rain,” an apparent reference to last year’s Hamas attacks in southern Israel. The European Broadcasting Union, which runs Eurovision, objected that the title and some of the song’s lyrics were overly political, and asked Israel to change them. Golan tweaked the song, which is now called “ Hurricane .”

Representing Israel on the world stage “has such huge significance and meaning, because of what we’re going through,” Golan said in a recent interview. “I won’t let anything break me, or move me off track.”

Bambie Thug

In recent weeks, the dark spectacle of Bambie Thug’s track “Doomsday Blue” has won the Irish entrant fans on social media — as has the singer’s outspoken pro-Palestinian stance and criticism of Israel’s involvement in Eurovision.

Eurovision organizers ban artists from making political comments on its stages, saying the competition is meant to unite, not divide. But the Irish entry — real name Bambie Ray Robinson — has tested those rules. At a Tuesday news conference, Bambie Thug, who is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns, said that Eurovision had demanded they remove pro-Palestinian slogans from their outfit. On Thursday, Bambie Thug wrote on Instagram that “my heart and prayers are with the people of Palestine.”

At one point during Bambie Thug’s semifinal performance on Tuesday, the singer stood in the middle of a pentagram, encircled by burning candles. Then they danced seductively with a man dressed like a demon. As the track ended, the phrase “Crown the Witch” appeared on huge screens at the back of the stage.

Switzerland

Switzerland’s entrant, Nemo, has an absurdly catchy track called “The Code,” in which they sing rap and sing operatically about their journey to realizing they were nonbinary.

“I went to hell and back / To get myself on track,” Nemo sings in the chorus: “Now, I found paradise / I broke the code.”

Throughout its 68 year history, Eurovision has often featured L.G.B.T.Q. performers, with past winners including Dana International, a transgender woman, and Conchita Wurst, a drag act . Yet this year is the first time Eurovision has prominently featured nonbinary acts like Nemo and Bambie Thug.

In a recent video interview, Nemo, 24, said they were “amazed” that Eurovision fans were connecting with their “deeply personal” track. “I think the message behind the song is quite universal,” Nemo said: “We all know that feeling of wanting to break free from something — everyone has a code to break.”

Alyona Alyona and Jerry Heil

In 2022, months after Russia’s invasion, Ukraine won Eurovision with Kalush Orchestra’s track “Stefania.” This year, Alyona Alyona and Jerry Heil, a rapper and singer representing the country, are among the favorites to win.

They are competing with “ Teresa and Maria ,” an emotional song referencing Mother Teresa and the Virgin Mary.

In a recent interview, Heil — real name Yana Oleksandrivna Shemaieva — said that Eurovision was a vital opportunity to focus attention on the country’s plight. “We need to show the world that we still need their help,” she said.

As much as the pair want to win Saturday’s final, Heil said it would be a bigger victory if Eurovision fans would start listening to Ukrainian pop year-round. “That is the only way we can be visible every day,” Heil said, rather than “from Eurovision to Eurovision.”
