Since the Masters programme also includes other students enrolled in Integrated PhDs, you will have a small cohort with whom you will work closely alongside during your studies.

Who are Integrated PhDs suitable for?

Integrated PhDs can be an effective pathway for any student, but they stand out in two situations:

Scenario 1: International Students

The Higher Education system differs across countries , although not by a large amount, enough to where an unfamiliar student may struggle, especially when working independently. An Integrated PhD allows you to adapt to the UK education system by offering a more guided and hands-on approach to your learning and research process before you embark on your three-year research project.

It also has visa benefits. If an international student seeking a Masters degree in the UK already knows they want to follow it up with a PhD, enrolling in an Integrated PhD will save them from having to leave the country and re-apply for a visa after completing their initial postgraduate degree.

Scenario 2: Lack of undergraduate research experience or a relevant Masters degree

An Integrated PhD is useful for students who have academic abilities but lack the necessary background to be considered for a standard-route PhD. This usually occurs under one of three scenarios:

The applicant is currently an undergraduate student or only holds a Bachelor’s degree,
The student has a Masters degree, but in a subject only loosely related to the discipline they wish to pursue at doctoral level,
The student has a relevant Masters degree, but the programme lacked a research focus, leaving the student with underdeveloped research skills.

Advantages and Disadvantages of an Integrated PhD

The advantages of an Integrated PhD are strongly linked to the international and inexperienced students they cater for. They offer students an effective means of gaining more confidence, knowledge and research skills in their field before starting a doctorate, and also provide visa benefits to international students who will be undertaking prior postgraduate study.

Integrated PhDs also enable students the possibility of receiving funding for the Masters phase of their programme, as will be explained in more detail in the ‘Funding Opportunities’ section.

Integrated doctorates have no obvious disadvantages, but are generally not suitable for those who already have a Masters degree or well-developed research skills in their chosen field. For these students, the additional costs and duration of an Integrated PhD can be avoided by opting for a traditional PhD for which they will already be suited for.

Finding a PhD has never been this easy – search for a PhD by keyword, location or academic area of interest.

The programme of study is naturally divided into two parts, the first for your Masters studies and the second for your PhD studies.

Your Masters studies will usually be divided into 180 module credits, half of which will focus on taught components and the other half on research components.

The modules will be tailored to your course, but they will include a variation of:

Taught modules:

Subject-specific module – You choose one or two modules from a predefined list of topics within your subject area. Your selection should reflect the research area you want your PhD to focus on.
English and Communication – Academic language and communication skills will be taught to prepare you for the ‘writing-up’ phase of your doctorate. A common misconception is that this module is similar to the English language requirement tests required to apply to a iPhD. In reality, the module will focus on learning how to critically evaluate research sources, write abstracts, literature reviews and conclusions, communicate in lab-based environments and present to audiences.
Research Techniques – You’ll receive in-depth training to familiarise you with the different research methods and analytical techniques available to modern researchers.
Research Proposal Development – You’ll work with your intended PhD supervisor to prepare a research proposal for your three-year PhD research project.

Research Modules:

You will carry out one or two small laboratory research projects under supervision for practical experience.

Integrated PhD in UK - Lectures and Lab Work

If you complete these modules with satisfactory performance, you will be awarded a Masters degree and will be considered for the following three-year PhD programme.

Each university has its own process for making this consideration, but most invite you to an interview with the supervisor you wish to conduct research with. The interview is used to confirm that you have acquired the specialised knowledge and research skills expected at masters level, and beyond that of someone capable of completing doctoral study.

If your interview goes well, you will be enrolled in your PhD programme. From this point on, your path will be the same as a regular PhD student. During your doctoral phase, you will conduct independent research and laboratory work for two years, followed by a final year of writing up and formally submitting your findings as a thesis. Your thesis, expertise and research competence will be assessed in an oral examination known as a viva. Upon successful completion of your viva, you will be officially awarded a PhD, and your studies will come to an end.

It should be noted that aside from the above, your university may offer optional modules which can equip you with a wide range of transferable skills.

Eligibility

Entry requirements for an integrated masters degree in the UK will vary from university to university, but the typical requirement is an Upper Second Class (2:1) honours Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject. Equivalent international qualifications are also accepted.

If you are an international student and English is your second language, most universities will require proof of your English language proficiency through an exam certificate. It’s best to check directly with the universities which certificate types they accept, but the most common English language qualification requirement is an IELTS certificate, with a minimum overall score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each category.

The typical annual tuition fee for an Integrated PhD in the UK is £4,712 per academic year for home/EU students (or £2,356 for part-time study) and £19,596 per academic year for international students (or £9,798 for part-time study).

As with all doctoral programmes, there are likely to be additional costs associated with your studies, such as bench fees for lab work, travel costs for collaborating and potential write-up fees for students who need more time to submit their thesis. Funding Opportunities

You can obtain funding for Integrated PhDs in the same way as for regular PhDs. Funding is usually provided by one of the seven UK Research Councils and research charity organisations such as the Wellcome Trust ; grants, scholarships and funded opportunities can be found directly in our searchable database .

Funding can either be partial (tuition fees only) or full (tuition fees and living costs). Most funding providers also cover the tuition fee for the Masters degree programme due to being integrated with the PhD, however, you should confirm this on a case-by-case basis.

As with regular PhD funding, the fully-funded opportunities are generally limited to home and EU students.

It’s also worth noting that PhD programmes which include an integrated Masters degree are eligible for a Doctoral Loan , even if you already have a postgraduate Masters degree from a previous university. Applications for Doctoral Loans must be made directly to Student Finance England and you must first be registered for a full doctoral degree. Due to application restrictions, you won’t be able to apply for a separate Postgraduate Masters Loan for the integrated Masters phase of your degree.

University Search Pages – Universities advertise their Integrated PhDs on their postgraduate search pages. You can find them by searching the name of the university followed by “ search postgraduate courses ” directly in Google.
Funding Body Websites – Funding bodies which provide studentships for Integrated PhDs sometimes advertise the positions on their website. A list of the most common funding providers can be found here: PhD Studentships .

Combined PhD Programs

Formal Combined PhD Programs

Ad hoc combined phd programs.

Many academic departments and programs in the Graduate School partner to offer formal combined PhDs. You can apply for a formal combined degree program in your original admission application to the Graduate School; or, if you are in your first year of study, by requesting to transfer from your current program to a combined program. Students may not transfer programs after they have advanced to candidacy.

To explore the possibility of transferring to a combined degree program, you should consult with the directors of graduate studies in your current and prospective programs. You will need to identify an appropriate academic adviser in the new program; fill out the Departmental Transfer Form ; and prepare a one-to-two-page statement detailing your academic reasons for requesting the transfer and a timeline for completing the PhD. Requests to transfer to a combined program should be submitted to your current and prospective programs for review and approval, which is entirely at the discretion of the two departments/programs. Programs then submit signed forms and materials to the Dean’s Office for final approval. These should be sent to [email protected] .

You also have the option to propose an ad hoc combined PhD for approval by both programs and the Graduate School. If you are in your first year of study and wish to explore the possibility of transferring to an ad hoc combined PhD, you should discuss your plans and proposal with the directors of graduate studies in your current and prospective programs. You will need to identify an appropriate academic adviser in the new program and complete the Departmental Transfer Form . (Example: a student in Political Science applying to transfer to an ad hoc combined PhD with Religious Studies would fill out the form requesting a transfer from "Political Science" to "Political Science and Religious Studies.") In addition to the form, you should prepare a one-to-two-page statement explaining the academic reasons for the ad hoc proposal. Applications to transfer to an ad hoc combined PhD must also include a detailed outline and timeline for completing all requirements of the degree.

Please note that a combined degree should represent some combination of the requirements of each program, as agreed to by both DGSs. It does not represent the total sum of requirements in both programs. The combined degree is not two PhDs, but rather a combination of two doctoral programs that can be completed within the student's normal time to degree. Requests to transfer to a combined program should be submitted to your current and prospective programs for review and approval. Approval is entirely at the discretion of each program. Programs then submit signed forms and materials to the Dean’s Office for final approval. These should be sent to [email protected] .

Your interests and goals may span multiple academic disciplines or areas of expertise. That is why the Stanford MBA Program empowers you to combine studies. This flexibility offers a rich and valuable academic experience.

Generally, about 20 percent of Stanford MBA students take advantage of a joint or dual degree to complement their MBA. As a student, you may also take courses in any department or graduate school at Stanford University.

Joint Degrees

Your Stanford joint degrees must be conferred simultaneously upon completion of degree requirements for both programs. While in the Stanford MBA Program, you may not pursue concurrently more than one additional degree. Learn more about joint degree programs below.

Dual Degrees

Interested in an additional discipline that is not represented in our joint degree programs? You can pursue a master’s degree from another Stanford program along with your MBA. While in the Stanford MBA program, you may not pursue concurrently more than one additional degree.

You may pursue a dual degree with any graduate program at Stanford University. Candidates must apply to and be accepted by the other program separately, and then notify Stanford GSB. You may apply concurrently to both programs or apply to the dual degree program during your first year as an MBA student; some graduate programs also permit you to apply in your second year. As with joint degrees, you may only pursue one additional degree while in the MBA program.

You may enroll in either a joint or dual degree with another graduate program at Stanford or a degree from an external university, but not both.

You must spend five quarters of full-time study at Stanford GSB. The combined degree programs must be completed in one of the following timelines. Note that some programs may require a particular academic path in order to successfully complete both degrees.

Yale Medical School and Yale Law School

You must spend five quarters of full-time study at Stanford GSB and complete at least one year at YMS or YLS first. Consult with YMS or YLS for timeline requirements.

Dual and Joint MS Overview

The dual and joint degree programs enable graduate students to obtain multiple graduate degrees concurrently or consecutively. Students apply to and complete the course requirements for each department separately.

Dual Degrees

Joint MS&E and Law Degrees

Joint MS&E and Master of Public Policy Degree

In the dual degree program, students obtain two graduate (usually MS) degrees concurrently or consecutively, completing all of the course requirements for each department. A total of 90 units is required to complete two master degrees.

Students doing a PhD degree, may also complete one MS degree (in the same or in a different department) and one PhD minor, without needing to take any additional units.

Admission Students must apply and be admitted to each program separately. Students may apply to only one department initially. After the first quarter at Stanford, students may apply to be admitted to the second department.

Advising Every student has one adviser in each degree program.

Joint MS&E and law degrees

The School of Law and the Department of Management Science and Engineering offer joint degree programs leading to a JD degree and an MS degree in MS&E, or to a JD and PhD in MS&E. These programs are designed for students who wish to prepare for careers in areas relating to both law and to the decision making, policy making and problem-solving knowledge and skills developed in the MS&E program. Students interested in either joint degree program must apply and gain admission separately to the School of Law and the Department of Management Science and Engineering, and, as an additional step, must secure consent from both academic units to pursue degrees in those units as part of a joint degree program. Interest in either joint degree program should be noted on the student’s admission applications and may be considered by the admission committee of each program. Alternatively, an enrolled student in either the Law School or MS&E may apply for admission to the other program and for joint degree status in both academic units after commencing study in either program.

Joint degree students may elect to begin their course of study in either the School of Law or MS&E. Students are assigned to a joint program committee composed of at least one faculty member from Law and one from MS&E. This committee plans the student’s program jointly with the student. Students must be enrolled full-time in the Law School for the first year of law studies, and it is recommended that students devote exclusively one autumn quarter to the MS&E MS program to initiate their MS&E work. After that time, enrollment may be in MS&E or Law, and students may choose courses from either program regardless of where enrolled. A candidate in the joint JD/PhD program should spend a substantial amount of full-time residency in MS&E. Students must satisfy the requirements for both the JD and the MS or PhD degrees as specified in the Stanford Bulletin or by the School of Law. The School of Law may approve courses from MS&E or courses in the student’s MS&E program from outside of the Department of Management Science and Engineering that may count toward the JD degree, and MS&E may approve courses from the School of Law that may count toward the MS or PhD degree in MS&E. In either case, approval may consist of a list applicable to all joint degree students or may be tailored to each individual student’s program. The lists may differ depending on whether the student is pursuing an MS or a PhD in MS&E.

In the case of a JD/MS program, no more than 45 units of approved courses may be counted toward both degrees. In the case of a JD/PhD program, no more than 54 units of approved courses may be counted toward both degrees. In either case, no more than 31 units of courses that originate outside the School of Law may count toward the law degree. To the extent that courses under this joint degree program originate outside the School of Law but count toward the law degree, the law credits permitted under Section 17(1) of the Law School Regulations are reduced on a unit-per-unit basis, but not below zero. The maximum number of Law School credits that may be counted toward the MS in MS&E is the greater of: (a) 18 units in the case of the MS, or (b) the maximum number of hours from courses outside the department that an MS candidate in MS&E is permitted to count toward the applicable degree under general departmental guidelines or under departmental rules that apply in the case of a particular student.

Tuition and financial aid arrangements are normally through the school in which the student is then enrolled.

Joint MS&E and Master of Public Policy degree

MS&E MS students who wish to apply their analytical and management skills to the field of public policy can simultaneously pursue a master's degree in MS&E and a master's degree in Public Policy. The MPP is a two-year degree program, but MS MS&E students who pursue the joint program can earn both degrees in a minimum of two years, depending on prior preparation and elective choices, by counting up to 45 quarter units of course work toward both degrees. After admission to the Department of Management Science and Engineering, incoming or current MS students request that their application file be forwarded to the MPP program director for review.

Students in the joint program normally will spend most of their first year taking MS&E core and concentration courses. The second year is typically devoted to the MPP core, concentration, and practicum. The joint degree requires 90 quarter units.

Tuition for the first year of study is paid at the Graduate Engineering rate, the remaining time at the Graduate rate.

Harvard College undergraduates who are interested in applying for PhD programs should first meet with one of our undergraduate advisors who will then refer the student to a GSAS advisor.

Combined Masters and PhD Programs in the US

I was asked by a reader if one can opt for a joint master and PhD program in the United States right after an undergraduate degree. My answer to that question would be YES. Most universities in the US accept students into their PhD programs right after a bachelors degree. US universities work according to the credit system. Each degree requires that the student earns a certain amount of minimum credits. In an integrated program, once you finish your master’s coursework (in 2-3 years) and earn the requisite credits/grades you can dive into full time research and the PhD portion coursework.

What are the entry requirements of MS + PhD programs?

The entry requirements are essentially the same that the school asks from its masters and PhD applicants. Undergrad grades, test scores, letters of recommendation and work experience are taken into account. Yes, your profile must be strong enough to be considered for such a position. An applicant must prove that he/she has a strong inclination for research and can continue in the program for 7-8 years. And if English is not your native language, you will likely have to prove your English ability by taking the TOEFL or another English exam. Admissions offices need to know that you can function in an English-only environment.

Masters students are usually offered only partial scholarships, depending on the availability. Many schools at least try that the international students receive some tuition waiver/scholarship. If chosen as a combined masters-PhD candidate it’s likely that the school will offer a fellowship and offer a TA/RA position. If not immediately, the RA/TA position comes in after the first semester or even the first year. Please note, this funding is entirely on the discretion of the department and it’s best to ask admissions/graduate coordinators about such policies when applying.

The advantages of such programs

If someone is absolutely sure that a doctoral degree is his/her ultimate goal, I would strongly advice opting for a combined degree. It’s a good career move to set on the research and PhD path right after an undergraduate degree. You’re set once and for all without the hassles of applying again. Additionally, the cost of applying to schools twice- once for masters and then for PhD- can be saved. Test scores are valid for a limited period of time and if it expires before the PhD cycle of admissions, an applicant is expected to appear for it again.

Combined programs are rigorous as there is a lot to learn before embarking on research. An undergrad is a novice when considering the demands of higher research. When choosing such a program be prepared to venture on a demanding, long and tough journey.

On the flipside, it’s completely alright if you want to pursue a doctoral program after completing your masters. Separate masters and PhD degrees offers you the flexibility to change schools, specializations/area of research and the option to work/research for a few years before heading for your PhD.

In a combined MS+PhD program does the student receive masters certificate if he/she doesn’t continue the PhD program after completing the masters?

Typically yes, this is the case that a student earns the MS or MA qualification along the way, but it is not always in the subject matter of the PhD itself. These are questions that should be clarified with an individual university department. 🙂

Can you provide the list of colleges which offers combined masters and PHD course or how to discern from the official website of the college if it offers the above mentioned course ?

It’s hard to compile a full list of these kinds of programs, for a few reasons. For one thing, universities don’t always make it obvious that they have a combined grad program. If you see that a university offers a Master’s and PhD in the same subject, there’s a chance that their program combines the two degrees. But you may need to contact the school to find out. It’s also possible that a school may offer a Masters in one subject, a PhD in another, but combine these two grad degrees into one double-major program.

Specific kinds of joint degrees are easier to find lists for. Some types of combined Masters/PhD are very popular and very specific, so that lists of all such programs are available. This is definitely true of the combined JD/MBA. Many different websites have lists of JD/MBA programs. I personally like Wikipedia’s JD/MBA list .

To find a list of combined Master’s/PhD programs that’s useful for you, search just for the subject area (or areas) you intend to study. That should help you come up with a good list of your options.

Hi, I am mechanical engineer, soon I will have my Meng degree. I have two years of work experience and zero research papers. Can you please tell me do i have chance to get accepted and get assistantship at MS+PHd program in Management/Marketing (because of my engineering background)? What’s the total duration for an integrated masters and PhD course. ?

There is no single answer for this. The masters coursework typically takes 1.5-3 years and then you progress to the PhD portion, which honestly can take a decade sometimes, but typically is a 5-6 year endeavor.

I did only one semester in one of the Universities in the UK in English and then I have withdrawn the course, and I would like to do this Combined Masters and PhD Programs in the US.

Do I need to provide TOEFL or IELTS to get the offer?

Or it is enough to provide a proof from the university that I have withdrawn from?

because I do not want take IELTS again.

If you have just one semester complete in an English speaking environment, most American universities will still want to see an English proficiency exam of some sort.

Whether or not you need to take the TOEFL or retake the IELTS depends on how long ago you took the last test. If you took the IELTS less than two years ago, you don’t need to retake it. US universities accept both the IELTS and the TOEFL, so long as your scores are less than two years old at the time of application. (Or sometimes they need to be less than two years old at the time you start your studies— contact the schools you’re applying to if you need to check the exact policy.)

However, if your IELTS scores are more than two years old, and you don’t have newer (less than two years old) TOEFL scores, you’ll need to either retake the IELTS or take the TOEFL.

That can be a little hard to predict, since grad programs look at many different factors. That being said, relevant work experience is always a plus. If you have presented at any academic conferences or gotten a subject-related paper published in an academic journal, that helps as well. Past research or TA experience is good too, of course!

Hello, I am currently in my first year of Masters and am looking to apply for an integrated MS-PhD program. For such a program, is a subject change possible for PhD? I mean, if I do my MS in Biological Sciences, can I switch to another related subject like Immunology for my PhD? Thank you!

That depends on a lot of factors, so you should ask the departments you would be part of. Some would allow this type of thing and others would not. Unfortunately, we are not experts in this type of thing, so the best source of information is the schools themselves. Good luck!

Hi. My wife has done MCA in india and has IT experience of 5 years. Planing to do PHD but her GRE scores are less than 300. We are hoping to choose combined MS+PHD as they are colleges who would allow her MS without GRE. This really does depend on the standards of each university. With a lower, sub-300 GRE score, you wife probably can get into some PhD programs. But can she get into the specific ones she’s most interested in? For the answer to that, she should check the policies of her specific target schools.

Which test is to be written to get into an integrated Phd program?

This depends on your course of study, and you should check the admissions requirements for some of your target schools for the most accurate information! Most schools will require the GRE for graduate studies, along with an English language test like the TOEFL or IELTS .

Do we need work experience for this joint venture?? And how many letter of recommendation is required? What about GRE do we need to take GRE?

As Omanjana mentioned, work experience is taken into consideration. However, work experience is not necessarily a requirement some combined Masters/PhD programs will require work experience, but others may accept applicants who don’t have work experience. Policies on experience vary from program to program.

Policies for letters of reference also vary from program to program, although you should assume that all programs will want at least one reference letter, usually more.

Policies for GRE vary as well. Most combined Masters and PhD programs at top ranked universities will require the GRE. However, some top programs may require the GMAT, MCAT, LSAT, or another graduate exam, depending on the program type. Mid-tier programs are not asl likely to require GRE scores if their focus is humanities or teacher training. However, the GRE is commonly asked for if you are applying to a mid-ranked combined Masters or PhD that’s very science oriented.

What about work permit after completing PhD in USA?

There are a different ways to get a work permit after your PhD if you are an international student. If you can get an American employer to give you a long-term job and sponsor your visa, that’s one way to stay on and work. To get such a job offer and visa, you need to have unique, advanced skills that few other job applicants have. But with a PhD, you just might.

You can also find short-term work (that could eventually become long-term work) after receiving a degree through a special kind of work status called “optional practical training” (OPT). With an OPT work permit, you can work at a job or do voulunteer work that is relevant to the degree you’ve just completed. So for example, if your PhD is in law, you may be able to get some short-term work through OPT if you work at a law firm.

For more information about OPT, I recommend checking out Magoosh’s interview with Othman Zaimi , an international student services specialist at the University of St. Thomas. I would also recommend contacting the international education offices of the schools you’re applying to. International student regulations can change as time passes, and different schools have their own different work requirements and restrictions. So the offices of your target schools are your best source of accurate, up-to-date information about work after your PhD. But again, the interview with Othman is a great place to start! 🙂

These are all good questions, but I’m afraid we aren’t the best people to answer them. Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice. As we mention in this post, everything depends on the program and school you are applying for. A combined program could take more or less than 5 years, and whether your master’s degree transfers depends on the degree and the program. Each program has it’s own requirements, but generally you would have to take standardized tests (likely the GRE and TOEFL), write essays, provide your transcripts and fill out any supplemental material for the school. Great question. This depends on the kind of program you’re applying to, since different schools will have different requirements. On average, most people that pursue a PhD degrees have their Masters in the same or similar subject, thus they already are coming in with research experience and potentially a published paper. Another thing to note is that research experience doesn’t mean that you need to have a published work; projects like final thesis or volunteering for faculty can also count as research, depending on the field.

MS-PhD in Nursing Combined Program Curriculum

The full-time MS-PhD in Nursing & Health Science Combined program curriculum prepares you to conduct research both independently and as a key member of an interdisciplinary team. Before you begin the program, you will work closely with an advisor to map your degree plan.

MS and PhD courses are taken in a very rigorous three years of full-time enrollment after which the master’s degree is awarded. You will then continue to complete the PhD dissertation proposal and dissertation research. Throughout the program, you will work closely with faculty who are active in research and experts in their field.

The first three years of MS and PhD coursework are very intensive, with five days per week of classes, clinical hours, and study time required to meet the program goals. MS-PhD in Nursing Program Phases

The first three years of this program feature fast-paced, intensive MS and PhD coursework. The master’s portion of the program for nurse practitioner students becomes increasingly clinical, including full-day precepted clinical experiences with expert nurse practitioner mentors. Dual Master of Arts in Statistics and Data Science

The Dual AM Degree in Statistics and Data Science (SDSD AM) is offered only to students enrolled in a Ph.D. program at Penn. Students pursuing more than one research master’s degree in passing to their Ph.D. should note: While some courses can count towards both a PhD and research master’s degree, no courses can count towards three or more degree programs at Penn. Penn Law, Medicine (Professional), Dental, or Vet school students will not be permitted to enroll in the program. The Master’s degree cannot be granted after the PhD is awarded.

The Degree Requirements (1) Six credit units of 5000 level or 9000 level Statistics and Data Science Department courses (independent studies and seminar courses do not count towards the degree)

(2) Four additional credit units of approved Penn courses with statistical content. These can be Statistics and Data Science Department courses or courses from other departments.*A minimum grade of B- or better is required for each course.

(3) An approved master’s thesis. The master’s thesis is a research paper that makes substantial use of statistics and is not part of a student’s dissertation (though it can be related to the dissertation work) or material you completed for a course (though it can build on a paper completed for a course). The thesis can be original research or can be a literature review of some area of statistics related to a student’s research. The thesis must be approved by a standing faculty member in the Statistics Department who has agreed to serve as an adviser for the project.

(4) Certification of Doctoral Qualifying Exam

To Apply for the Program: (1) Complete the Application-to-Dual-Degree-–-Master-of-Arts-in-Statistics-and-Data-Sciences . The form must be signed by your home department faculty chair/coordinator, your home department/school’s graduate dean, and the Academic Director for the Stat Master’s ([email protected])

Consult with your home department on any policies your program may have regarding external Master’s degree
Failure to submit the Application to the Dual Degree Form in the early stages of the program may results in your courses not counting towards your degree. **The application must be submitted at least 6 months prior to your applying for the degree. See deadlines above**

(2) Send complete Application to the Wharton Doctoral Program Office ( [email protected] ) to obtain a signature from the Vice Dean. You will not be permitted into the program until you receive approval from all listed above.

Please note: Any changes to the courses you list on your application must be first approved by the Academic Director, Linda Zhao, and your home department BEFORE you register for the course. Only the courses listed on your application are the ones approved. Failure to take courses within the approved list may result in a course not counting towards your degree.

It is the student’s responsibility to adhere to the degree application deadlines and apply for the degree during the semester in which they will complete all degree requirements.

Please note the following:

The University does not allow students to triple count courses for multiple degrees (i.e. you cannot count a course toward your Statistics Masters, home department Masters, and home PhD)
Transfer credits and undergraduate level courses will not count towards the SDSD AM
Independent studies and seminar courses (such as STAT 9910-301. Seminar sections vary by semester) do not count towards the SDSD AM
Non-Wharton PhD students in the SDSD AM program do not receive a Wharton email address nor do they have access to Wharton resources and events.
Your program CIP code is your primary program. The dual SDSD AM is a secondary program.
If you are an international student, please be aware of when your OPT clock begins. If you are unable to complete your PhD program but receive the SDSD AM, your OPT clock begins at the date of your SDSD AM degree conferral.

Bachelor's/Master's Combined Degree

Academically strong, motivated students in certain undergraduate school programs can pursue a concurrent, combined bachelor’s degree program. This program is restricted to Northwestern University undergraduates and is limited to certain degree programs within the University.

The Graduate School offers combined degree programs in the following disciplines: chemistry, comparative literary studies, economics, French, linguistics, plant biology and conservation, public health, statistics, and all departments in the McCormick School of Engineering except Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences.

To be considered for admission into the combined program, applicants must submit a completed  combined degree application  to their admitting program. In addition, most programs require the submission of two letters of recommendation and official transcripts.

Applicants should check with their admitting program for specific application requirement details.  In all cases, applicants must have at least one quarter of undergraduate study remaining at the time of their enrollment in the combined degree program .

Requirements and registration

Degree completion.

Students receive two degrees as part of this combined course of study, one from their undergraduate school and one from TGS.

Students may pursue this course of study once they are within four courses of completing their undergraduate degree. Some students may complete the combined degree program concurrently, that is, by completing the degree requirements for the bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the same time. Other students may complete the undergraduate degree first and then complete the master’s degree after having graduated from their undergraduate college. Students in this program may not receive their master’s degree ahead of their bachelor’s degree.

Student status

Students who finish their undergraduate degree concurrently with their master’s degree will remain categorized as “undergraduate” for their entire term of study (no more than twelve quarters, typically). Students who receive their undergraduate degree (after twelve quarters) but have remaining graduate course work to complete will be given "graduate" status upon graduation from their undergraduate school.

Course counting

TGS allows a maximum of three courses to count towards both the undergraduate and graduate degrees. However, certain programs may have more strict requirements. Students should speak with the undergraduate and graduate programs about double counting potential of their course work.

Financial aid

Students interested in this program must be aware of certain financial aid information and implications:

Undergraduates may receive up to twelve quarters of financial aid to support undergraduate study; after twelve quarters, undergraduate financial aid packages do not apply, as students will be shifted to graduate status
Students who do not complete the degrees concurrently and will need aid to support further study at the graduate level should apply for financial aid by completing the FAFSA in quarter twelve
Students may not serve as a TA while receiving undergraduate aid. In order to serve as a TA, students pursuing these combined degrees must formally forfeit their undergraduate financial aid (if they have such a package).
Students who forfeit their undergraduate status will also forfeit their student health insurance, housing, and meal plan; for all intents and purposes, the students will be considered graduate students.
Students who officially switch status from undergraduate to graduate may receive the TGS health subsidy and may be subject to the TGS activity fee.

What is M.Sc Ph.D

M.Sc Ph.D is a three to six years-long dual degree programme that combines MSc and P.hD. This integrated course rewards a student with a double degree. A M.Sc. is a postgraduate degree in science discipline. Candidates who have completed a B.Sc. are eligible for enrolling in M.Sc. While a PhD is a doctoral level research degree programme. The fee structure at private institutions fluctuates between Rs. 2.60 Lakh to Rs. 11.20 Lakh per academic year.

On average, top institutions like IIT-Bombay charges Rs. 50,000 per academic year, IIT- Kanpur charges Rs. Thirty-six thousand per academic year, and IIT- Kharagpur charges Rs. 12,000 per academic year. Eligibility Criteria

Candidates with a Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology or Chemistry or Pharmacy or Biology or Mathematics or Agriculture or Veterinary Sciences or Physics as applicable to individual disciplines, under the 10+2+3/4 system, can apply to this program.

Candidates with BE or B. Tech degree programs who qualify in the Mathematics or Mathematical Statistics paper in the JAM entrance exam can apply for the Mathematical Sciences.

Students with BE or B. Tech degree programs who qualify in the Biotechnology paper in the JAM entrance exam can apply to the Biological Sciences.

Candidates who have cleared JEST are eligible to apply for an M.Sc Ph.D integrated degree.

Candidates who seek admission for M.sc Ph.D integrated degree at IISc should qualify in the JAM Entrance examination.

Additional Criteria Requirements

The minimum eligibility criteria for admission in M.Sc. Ph.D integrated degree program is an aggregate of 55 percent to 60 percent and above or equivalent grade in the Bachelor’s degree.

The minimum eligibility criteria for SC/ST candidates are relaxed to pass class over the first class in the qualifying examination.

Departmental specifications require an eligibility criterion of subjects at the Bachelor's or 10+2 standard levels. To deem eligible for certain institutional departments, candidates must ensure that these requirements are met.

Final year graduates - students appearing for their final year qualifying examination and awaiting the results are also eligible to apply. However, this sect of students should have met the eligibility criteria for the award of the qualifying degree, including all the entrance examinations, dissertation projects, and viva-voce at the time of admission.

Combined Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy Program Details

This Fast Track program reduces the time which would be required if the Master’s and Ph.D. degree programs were earned separately. The program allows a portion of the Master’s curriculum to transfer into the Ph.D. thesis, reducing the minimum number of words required.

To Earn the Master of Arts

This program has been designed to provide you with a comprehensive Biblical education in an accelerated online four-module educational format. The 32 credit hour requirement for the Master of Arts portion of the Fast Track Combined M.A./Ph.D. program are fulfilled by completing four projects in the Major Concentration of your choosing.

Atlantic Coast offers a Master of Arts Degree in:

Pastoral Ministry

Each M.A. Concentration contains courses which require Projects related to two textbook and audio lectures which will be located in the Online Resource Room . The audio lectures are also available for personal ministry use. In addition to the courses in the Concentration, there is a Master of Arts Summative Examination. This is a written summation of the learning experience in the M.A. concentration, and is to include how this M.A. experience will be applied by the graduate in life and ministry.

Sample M.A. Program Syllabus:

Project One

Create a two-level annotated outline for the two textbooks that detail what you consider to be the most important elements or sections in the book.

Project Two

Write a Review Essay for each textbook. Your Review Essays should be not less than 750 words each.

Project Three

Write a Response (reaction) Essay for each textbook. These should be not less than 750 words.

Project Four

Use at least 300 words to describe your learning experience in the course. Include how you will use what you have learned in your professional and/or personal life.

Summative Examination

The Summative Exam is an “open book” summation of your learning experience in the M.A. degree program. Using your textbook outlines, essays, and notes from the audio lectures, write a summation of your educational experience in no less than 1,500 words.

To Earn the Ph.D.

Atlantic Coast Theological Seminary has adopted the British Model for the awarding of the Ph.D. degree. British Universities award the Ph.D. on the basis of an acceptable thesis. At universities in the U.K., the term thesis is usually associated with the Ph.D. (doctoral) and research Master’s degrees. The term dissertation is the more common title for a substantial writing project submitted as part of a Master’s degree. The British Model Ph.D. requires only the thesis as described below.

The thesis shall be written in the English language.

The thesis shall be not less than 125 pages, exclusive of Abstract, Table of Contents, list of tables and illustrative material.

Preliminary Page

The first five preliminary pages must be the Title Page, Abstract, Dedication and Acknowledgements, Author’s Declaration and Table of Contents. These should be single-sided.

At the top of the title page, within the margins, the thesis should give the title and, if necessary, sub-title and volume number. The full name of the author should be in the center of the page. At the bottom center should be the words “A thesis submitted to Atlantic Coast Theological Seminary in accordance with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, and month and year of submission.

Each copy must include an abstract or summary of the thesis in not more than 500 words, on one side, which should be single spaced in a font size between 10 and 12.

Author’s Declaration

A signed declaration is required, stating how much of the work contained in the thesis is the candidate’s own work and how much of it has been conducted in collaboration with, or with the assistance of, others.

Table of Contents, List of Tables, and Illustrative Material

The table of contents must list, with page numbers, all chapters, sections and subsections, the list of references, bibliography, list of abbreviations and appendices. The list of tables and illustrations should follow the table of contents, listing with page numbers the tables, photographs, diagrams etc. in the order in which they appear in the text.

How Long Should it Take to Write Your Thesis?

The answer: not as long as you think. Most of the time academics confuse time with quality. When a project takes a long time, it’s almost always believed to be more valuable than one completed more quickly.

Most theses can be completed in six months or less, with two exceptions. The first (and most obvious) exception is when your study will require data collection or longitudinal research over a long period of time. For example, if your research design requires observation over a one year period, you won’t be able to complete the thesis in six months. The second exception is if you do not work on your thesis consistently.

These program objectives are in compliance with the federal government administration’s request to educational institutions to develop Fast Track degree programs which will place qualified persons into the workplace more rapidly than outdated traditional programs. We believe this also applies to ministry.

Solarium 2024 celebrates creations by MFA students in studio art and design

In what has become a spring semester tradition, the Graduate School’s light-filled suite of offices in Bond Hall is once again a gallery space displaying the works of talented Notre Dame master of fine arts (MFA) students in the Department of Art, Art History, and Design.

For the students, the works on view in the Solarium 24 show are individual artistic expressions derived from years refining the skills important to their particular creative process—whether that be drawing, painting, sculpture, or photography.

And, as with all visual artistic expression, there is both what we see and what lies beneath.

“Within the context of a research university, art is an intellectual pursuit as well as a visual one,” says Jason Lahr , associate professor, painting and drawing, and director of graduate studies for the MFA programs in studio art and design. “The art is how our MFA students engage with the world. The way we articulate our research is through form, materials, images, and objects.”

The works on display this year reveal some of the troublesome issues of contemporary life with which the students are engaged. Those issues include our deteriorating environment, the experience of anxiety and how one might confront or escape it, the pressure exerted on women to both perform and conform, and how we choose to remain—or not—connected to our families and our past.

Alvarado, Amstutz, and Dorian claim awards

At the opening reception on Wednesday, March 6, Michael Hildreth, Ph.D. , dean of the Graduate School; associate provost and vice president for graduate studies; and professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy, welcomed the artists and visitors. He announced three awards, each conveying not only recognition and honor, but a $1,000 prize:

Best Artist Award: Franceska Alvarado

Artist Franceska Alvarado discusses her paintings.

“Above all, I intend to put my audience in a surreal atmosphere that stimulates raw emotion and blurs the threshold between imagination and reality.”

Franceska’s work explores the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of the human condition from the perspective of a young woman. That young woman is very specifically herself and, even more specifically, that self experiencing anxiety. Using a surreal lens, in the painting Storm Before the Calm , she explores how various organs feel when she is anxious—for example, the phrase “butterflies in my stomach” is given literal representation, while a raven is included as a symbol of foreboding.

Within this painting, Franceska also explores the role of peer pressure in engendering anxiety. Barely extinguished cigarettes in a lung and a writhing snake for intestines represent the uneasy feelings that arise when friends or social media promote a risky activity.

Franceska is not afraid of revealing the anxious feelings that are part of the human condition. “I deal with anxiety by personifying it. The very act of painting is therapeutic,” she says.

Her second painting in the Solarium show, Burnt Out , delves into feelings created by the constant pressure exerted on an artist to create. “What am I without my art?” is the poignant question her image of an attenuated hand explores.

People’s Choice Award: Norah Amstutz

“With an urn covered with strawberries that change from gleaming red to paler red to brown, I turn a critical eye to the propaganda of accessibility that has come to define the American Dream.”

A large pot prominently featuring a curved middle to represent a swelling belly and named We Will Soon Be Rotten is Norah’s critique of the American food industry—particularly its prioritizing of profit and convenience over health.

Completed over the span of two months, every square inch of this 3 ½ ft. tall urn was hand-carved and hand-painted by the artist. Its creation springs from her passion for social justice and her experience of growing up in a rich culinary culture.

It is of utmost significance that Norah chose strawberries to cover the urn from top to bottom.

“The strawberry is a fruit that becomes ripe naturally for only a brief moment each summer; yet, it has been chemically altered to be available all year long,” she says. “In this way, we have been trained to expect access to whatever we want whenever we want it. And that has led to a decline in the nutritional value of our food, substandard wages for workers in the mega-food industry, and the near-extinction of small farms, as well as environmental calamity.”

Appearing also on the urn are seven distinct “story” images. One is a John Deere combine. Another reproduces a sign stuck on the side of a road during yet another California wildfire. It shows how many miles to both the Getty Museum and to “Certain Extinction.”

“I breathe rhythm and movement back into objects that might seem to have completed their journey. I stage a finale for them, acting as the final hand in folding them into the present.”

The installation Nothing’s Precious is an exploration of Lily’s personal inheritance. In the attic of her family home in Louisiana, she sorted through dozens of boxes of her mother’s and grandmother’s possessions—cataloging and organizing their contents. From discarded Mardi Gras beads to multiple pairs of gloves, paper dolls, embroidered handkerchiefs, ribbons, plaster architectural fragments, and even a broken clock with exposed gears—each of the objects in the installation was precious to its owner at one time.

Yes, a precious object at one time, worthy of being kept, but then essentially forgotten for decades.

“For me, these objects introduce conflicting emotions,” Lily says. “There is tension between the impulse to liberate them and an emotional tethering to precious artifacts that lay dormant.”

Lily notes that she has sought out none of the objects. They are an inheritance that, whether taken singly or together, tell a story. She is the storyteller, bringing them back into the spotlight.

How the show comes together and how it can be viewed

In addition to the students and their professors, the Solarium exhibition owes much to Aaron Bell , the Graduate School’s graphic designer and communications specialist.

All MFA studio art and design students are invited to submit art for consideration in the show, and a small contingent of judges visits the studios to select pieces. Bell connects with the students, and together they assess what might be ready for an exhibition and, given the constraints of Bond Hall, what might display well in the Solarium exhibition space.

"This show has definitely become my favorite event on our calendar each year,” says Bell. “Being an artist myself, it’s very gratifying to be able to play a role in supporting and amplifying the work of these talented artists while also having the opportunity to beautify our campus space.”

The Solarium show is located in the Graduate School offices at 117 Bond Hall. Interested members of the Notre Dame community are invited to view the exhibition during regular office hours.

‘Scary and Daunting’: Dartmouth Players Detail How Union Plan Came Together

On Tuesday, the historic 13-2 vote by the men’s basketball team to unionize took a significant step toward classifying student-athletes as employees.

Members of the Dartmouth College men’s basketball team congregated at the stately Hanover Inn near campus on a dreary, drizzly Tuesday and walked over to a small office building where they smiled for a group photo. Then they went up to a second-floor conference room and took a vote that had been six months — or rather, many years — in the making.

When the yellow sheets of paper were tallied and certified about an hour later, the basketball players had accomplished something no other college athletes had done.

By a 13-2 vote, they had formed a union.

“It’s definitely becoming more real,” Cade Haskins, a junior on the basketball team and a leader of the effort, said to about a dozen reporters after the vote. “We know this could potentially be making history. That wasn’t the reason we were doing it, but to do that can be scary and daunting.”

Haskins expressed hope that his peers across the Ivy League and the rest of the country would soon be recognized as employees under federal labor law — a classification that has been a red line for college sports leaders who would be forced to share revenue directly with athletes.

But at a time when college sports’ amateur model is buckling under the strain of antitrust lawsuits, unfair labor challenges and waning support in Congress, it is unclear whether Tuesday’s election will be remembered as a signature moment or a footnote.

There is no visible movement to organize by other Dartmouth teams. And a reminder that the case is far from final arrived just before the vote: Dartmouth filed an appeal of a regional director’s decision last month to classify the players as employees to the full National Labor Relations Board, which has jurisdiction only over private employers.

(Nearly a decade ago, a regional director awarded the Northwestern football team the right to vote to form a union , but when the board declined to assert jurisdiction in the case , the votes, which had been impounded, were destroyed before they could be counted.)

Dartmouth could eventually take the board’s decision to a federal appellate court, meaning that the case may not be resolved until the current players have graduated.

In a statement, the college called the unionization vote inappropriate: “Classifying these students as employees simply because they play basketball is as unprecedented as it is inaccurate.”

Also on Tuesday, a House of Representatives subcommittee announced a hearing next week titled “Safeguarding Student-Athletes from N.L.R.B. Misclassification.”

When asked how far the Dartmouth players were from the finish line, Haskins said, “We’re closer than we started.”

The vote is the latest flex by organized labor, whose nationwide activity — and popularity — has, with the backing of the Biden administration, surged to levels not seen since the 1960s.

Still, Dartmouth is a somewhat unlikely hub of activism. It does not have a rich history of rabble rousing like the University of California, Berkeley. The war in Gaza has not roiled the campus to the extent that it has at other Ivy League schools. The school is in a remote location and has the smallest enrollment in the Ivy League (4,556 undergraduates), providing organizers with only so much oxygen in a place whose independent streak is imbued in the state motto: Live Free or Die.

Yet, the basketball team is just the latest Dartmouth group to organize in the last two years, following student workers, graduate student workers and library workers. The dormitories’ resident advisers are in the process of forming a union.

“The last few years have been a whirlwind of labor activity in this tiny, rural place,” said Marc Dixon, the chairman of the Sociology department, who studies labor issues. “The pace has been really wild.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, this local wave of activity had its roots in the coronavirus pandemic.

When Dartmouth students returned to campus under a hybrid schedule in the fall of 2020, students who worked at the two campus eateries felt stuck. They needed the $11-per-hour jobs, but they also felt especially vulnerable to the virus.

Around the time when the food service workers began to organize, their effort received a boost: Dartmouth announced in the fall of 2021 that its endowment had generated a whopping 46-percent return in the previous fiscal year, climbing to $8 billion. (Dartmouth said at the time that it would raise its minimum wage from $7.75 to $11.50.)

About six months later, the food-service workers had voted to unionize.

When negotiations with the college lagged, the workers voted to strike in February 2023. Dartmouth immediately relented — bumping food service workers pay to $21 per hour, along with agreeing to sick pay for Covid-19 and overtime for late-night shifts.

“As a freshman, you’re not in position to get a research job,” said Ian Scott, a senior who worked in the dish room at a campus cafe and was an organizer. “Dining service is where you go when you can’t be choosy. Many people who work there were — and still are — low-income people of color who need aid.”

Watching this play out was Haskins, who worked at a dining hall. He also plays basketball. (About half of the team members have jobs at the school.)

Haskins, a junior from Minneapolis who is a policy, philosophy and economics major, had struck up a friendship with Walter Palmer, a former Dartmouth player who works in the alumni office. Palmer, who remains the most recent Dartmouth player to be drafted by the N.B.A., in 1990, helped form the first players’ union in Europe and has also worked for the N.B.A. Players Association. He connected the players with the local Service Employees International Union — and other influential figures like Tony Clark, the head of the Major League Baseball Players Association.

Soon plans were made for taking their case to the N.L.R.B. in September, after the three freshmen on this year’s team arrived. (Haskins and Romeo Myrthil, a junior from Solna, Sweden, who is studying computer science, were viewed as ideal leaders because they would not graduate until next year.)

“We take an oath to organize the unorganized, but it doesn’t really say what that means,” said Chris Peck, a painter who is the longtime president of Local 560. “College athletes — how does that fit? You assume they come from money and they’ve got the world by the tail. Then you hear that they’re working jobs on top of going to practice and studying. It was a similar story as the dining workers.”

This case, though, does not fit neatly into any box.

Dartmouth, like the rest of the Ivy League schools, does not offer athletic scholarships — only need-based financial aid. And the basketball team did not reap tens of millions like Kansas or Kentucky. In fact, it is subsidized by Dartmouth, which has incurred more than $3.2 million in losses operating the program over the last five years, according to testimony at the hearing. (Distributions from the N.C.A.A. men’s basketball tournament and the Ivy League television contract with ESPN are categorized as athletic department revenue.)

In granting the players employee status, the regional director hearing the case, Laura A. Sacks, ruled that the six pairs of basketball shoes (valued at $200 apiece) given to players each season and the two to four tickets that players are provided to each game for their family and friends served as compensation and thus place the players under the college’s control.

She also ruled that another form of compensation is access to the “early read” admissions process because of their value as basketball players.

Those are among the issues that Dartmouth, which recently hired the same lawyers who are representing the University of Southern California in an N.L.R.B. case asserting that football and men’s and women’s basketball players are employees, is pushing back against in its appeal to the full board. The law firm, Morgan Lewis, also represents SpaceX, Amazon and Trader Joe’s, companies that have challenged the authority of the N.L.R.B.

While there seems to be general support for the basketball players, there does not seem to be widespread eagerness on campus to take on the hard work of organizing athletes in many of the other 33 sports that Dartmouth sponsors.

New rules allowing athletes to make money from endorsements has prompted them to think about their circumstances, a member of the men’s hockey team said.

“I think guys are comfortable with the way things are,” said the player, who asked to not be identified because he had not received authorization from Dartmouth to speak with the news media. “We get to play hockey and go to a school that we’re super thrilled about. It’s a choice we make to come here, and so you accept the pros and the cons.”

He also noted that the team is having its best season in nearly a decade.

That is not the case with the men’s basketball team, which has had a desultory season, anchored in last place in the Ivy League. But when the Big Green staged a spirited rally to defeat Harvard on Tuesday night, it allowed them to conclude their 6-21 season with a smile — and a second victory on the day.
