You are the manager of Quick Safaris Transport Company. Of late you’ve realized that the workers, mainly drivers and conductors have lost discipline, and this has made the company incur a lot of loss.

Write an internal memo to them, warning them of dire consequences if they do not change their behaviour and attitude.

Some of the areas you wish to address are:

The race began and without donkey’s knowledge, the chameleon jumped on the donkey’s tail. They ran and ran, until the donkey was so tired until he stopped to rest. As soon as the donkey stopped, the chameleon jumped from the donkey’s tail and said, “Now my friend, are you any faster than I?”

“No, now I know that you are a man,” answered the poor donkey.

In a town called Irandunwo, lived a loose talker called “Elenuobere” – “sharp mouth.” One day it was rumored that a man had seduced the Oba’s wife. He went and said he had designed the plan by which that act was accomplished. He was taken to court and convicted of talking rubbish hence fined one pound and five shillings. He had no money and so went to prison.

But a kind farmer agreed to bail him out if he would work on his farm for five days. The next day on the way to the farm, they heard a sound in the bush. Elenuobere burst out, “surely that is a horse grazing, and its left eye is blind.” The farmer betted with him that if that was true he would strike off five shillings from the debt. If not, the debtor would give one extra day of work. When they reached the animal, Elenuobere was proved right and so his debt was reduced.

Soon afterwards, they came across a wet spot and he claimed it was the piss of a pregnant woman. Once again, he was right and the debt was reduced. At the farm when they sat to eat, the farmer sighed three times and each time Elenuobere claimed he knew what was in his thoughts. The argument that ensued led them to the king’s court for a settlement. The farmer all the time was confident that he could deny whatever Elenuobere would say.

Before the royal assembly, Elenuobere then stated: “The first thought was: May God Almighty give long life to the king. Your second thought was: may this royal family continue to rule long in our town. And your third thought was: May God grant the king’s heir who will rule after him.” The whole gathering, including the farmer, affirmed saying “Amen.” The could not deny lest he annoyed the king.

Elenuobere got his acquittal and relief from the labour. “The mouth that commits an offence must talk itself out of punishment.” The story illustrates the quoted final adage.

I would like to share my most memorable experiences especially about that horrifying day of a coup.

I reminiscence the gloomy day of the execution of our Governor Abashwili. A day of fantastic and horrific memories. Simon Shashava my love betrothed me; he hang a beautiful chin around my neck. Reluctantly we parted. Simon promised to come to me after the war.

Oh! Horrible memories I nurse; Georgi beheaded. The egocentric wife and mother Natella Ambaswili abandoned her innocent child Michael. The brute is only concerned about her clothes and boots to match. She escaped to save her dear life. Overwhelmed by humane, feeling I had to guard little Michael. With much persuasion did my fellow servants urge me to escape. The fat prince with drunken ironshirts did carry Georgi’s head on a lance; with a nail the soldier fastened the head on the wall by its hair. The sight was horrific. In dilemma I stood still, torn between my love for Michael and for my life. I heard or I thought the child called to me. Full of compassion, I sat down waiting, watching hoping someone should come for the child. At the break of dawn, I picked the child as stolen goods and I crept away.

Seven days I trudged with Michael a sweet load on my back across the glacier in the Northern Mountain. Exhausted, I arrived at my brother’s house, Lavrenti Vashnadze I hoped he would arise and embrace me. How disillusioned I became. A cold reception I received, what a mean, eccentric wife Aniko is! The puritanical, insensitive sister-in-law viewed me like I had the plague. Scared I had scarlet fever, worse still a contagious disease. Tuberculosis superciliously calling out to a servant to mind the cake. Like a police officer she interrogated me. Concerning my husband. The henpecked Laverenti fearful, lied to her that my husband is coming to a farm after the war. I was going to wait for him I longed to sit and eat but this was an illusion. I placed Michael in Lavrenti’s hand. Oh! Brother, only promised a bed after supper. My goodness! I collapsed.

As I sat by the stream washing linen long after Lavrenti forcefully married me off to Jussup. Almost forgetting my frustrations I laughed as Michael and other kids enacted the Head-off Game. He, like his father, Georgi, outwits other kids. I am elated to see Simon, he is thrilled. What a reunion. Sadly, I explained I had changed my name: Simon could not understand that nothing stood between us, yet there was something. He saw the cap on the grass and wondered whether I got a baby. Hastily, he concluded, the wife need not say no more. Frustrated, he demanded his cross. Angrily he said “Better still throw it in the stream,: I pleaded desperately, passionately, the child is not mine,” What a day, I stood aghast. Two ironshirts had abducted Michael. In a moment call Simon. My! He is gone.

Determined to fight for the child, I had adopted and brought up and nurtured, I risked my life. I boldly followed the ironshirts to the city. What a day!

The English papers for 2021 really broke from tradition. Across the board, the questions tended to be very open-ended, probably so that students who’d had a difficult year could still demonstrate whatever they knew. At first glance, this seems like a huge benefit – but in reality, these questions are bad news, because you can’t tell how all those varied responses will be graded against each other, or how NESA wants you to frame your argument.

Structure and Weighting of the Paper 1 Exam

The Paper 1 exam is divided into two Sections. Section 1 is the comprehension section – otherwise known by the catchy name, ‘short answer responses to unseen texts’. It is divided into roughly 5 questions with a total weighting of 20 marks. Section 2 is the essay section, where students write 1 essay response worth 20 marks. The paper is worth 40 marks, and is 40% of your total exam mark for the English HSC.

Section 1: Comprehension Based on Unseen Texts

The comprehension in Section 1 wasn’t too unexpected. Usually, NESA asks questions about the unseen texts that focus on an aspect of human experience listed in the rubric, such as paradoxes of human experience, or the role of story-telling. Really specific themes. This time – possibly due to the impact of COVID on HSC students – they only asked broad questions about the character’s experiences, identity or relationships.

A broad Advanced question: Analyse how Didem Caia uses literary devices to reflect on her experience.

A broad Standard question: Explain the ways in which the writer represents Karlie Noon’s unique experience.

However, a positive trend across the questions was that NESA focused strongly on knowledge of text-types and literary devices, such as the representation of voice, characterisation, or point-of-view. This gave better students a good opportunity to show off in their technical analysis.

A text-type focused Advanced question: Evaluate Anne Enright’s use of narrative voice in shaping the character of Katherine O’Dell.

A text-type focused Standard question: Analyse how the writer represents a childhood memory.

The big surprise was the lack of a comparative mini-essay. This is a good reminder that NESA doesn’t have to format the paper in the way you are used to, or allocate the marks traditionally – in theory, the comprehension could ask you to answer 20 1-mark questions or 1 20-mark question if they really felt like it.

Section 2: Essay Section

When you open up the paper to Section 2 sometimes there is a long list of individual questions for each prescribed text. Other times, there is just one, rubric-based question that everyone in Standard and Advanced has to answer. In 2021, everyone got this question:

Analyse how your prescribed text represents the ways individuals respond to the challenges they face. In your response, make reference to your prescribed text.

There was no particular focus on themes from rubric. Instead, there was textual focus. ‘Represents’ asks the student to discuss the authorial perspective, and the text-type techniques unique to their prescribed text – such as novel or film devices. All in all, a very broad, friendly question.

What lessons should current students learn from this paper?

As I mentioned before, open-ended questions don’t make the bell-curve all that differentiated. As a general rule, if you’ve studied hard, what you want is a highly-specific question that filters out all the students who didn’t study. Overall, what this paper reinforces is, you really need to know your techniques! Make sure you keep a glossary throughout your HSC year to build up the quality of your analysis.

It is time to practice and improve your essay skills by having a go at this list of essay questions compiled by Save My HSC especially for you. How to ace your HSC english exam

With the HSC English exam becoming increasingly imminent, you are probably wondering how on earth you are going to remember all those quotes or write three essays in 2 hours!!

Unfortunately, we can’t remember those quotes for you but we do have a few key tricks that should help you with your final English grind, as well as a general exam approach.

(1) E ngage with the rubric/ key terms in the module

All questions are based upon the respective Module’s outline which you can find in NESA’s trusty syllabus . Even if a question does not mention key terms within that outline, it is always a good idea to relate your ideas to those foundational concepts. This shows a broad understanding of the module, as well as critical thinking in your ability to connect ideas.

For example, the Common Module essay question ( Texts and Human Experiences ) might not directly relate to the ‘anomalies, paradoxes and inconsistencies in human behaviour.’ However, engaging with these ideas throughout your response will help guide your argument and demonstrate your personal reflection on the Module's key concepts.

It is also a good idea to think of some synonyms for the key terms if you find their usage is becoming too repetitive. For example, for Advanced English Module A ( Textual Conversations ) you might consider other nuanced words to avoid the overuse of ‘conversation’... perhaps ‘discourse’, ‘dialogue’, ‘discussion.’

(2) Be flexible

Avoid rote learning and make sure all parts of your response - intro, topic sentences, analysis, links and conclusion - relate to the specific question that you receive on the day (not the one you memorised the night before!)

You may receive overarching questions that involve different components of the rubric or perhaps very specialised questions that focus your attention on a single key concept. For example, the Common Module may ask you to engage with the overall notion of storytelling that combines the individual and collective human experience. But… it could also ask you to pinpoint one particular emotion from your text such as loneliness in Nineteen Eighty Four (take a look at the 2019 paper 😖)

Module C ( The Craft of Writing ) might require a specific textual form (persuasive, discursive or imaginative) or perhaps it will be up to your discretion, based on the stimulus/ question that you receive.

Moral of the story… always remain flexible and be prepared for anything!!

(3) Organise your thoughts under key themes

This will help you stay on track in the exam. Themes give you something to come back to if you start to feel overwhelmed or are thrown by a crazy unseen question.

(4) Preparation

Timed practice responses to unseen questions will always be the best way to prepare. Emulating the conditions you face in the actual exam will likely make that final exam feel less daunting - you’ve easily done it before at the comfort of your own desk so you can easily do it again in the exam hall :)

However, time is of the essence when it comes to last minute preparation. Another effective way to prepare is by simply brainstorming ideas to a range of random unseen questions - jot down what your thesis/ intro might look like, a few topic sentences and the textual evidence you will use for each paragraph. This gives you diversity in your preparation and forces you to consider how you might respond to a wide range of questions (hopefully one of which is similar to that question you are blessed with on the day!)

(5) Time management

English is unlike other exams in the sense that you can not borrow time from multiple choice or short answer questions to use on your extended responses. Across Paper 1 and Paper 2, you will be writing for a full 1.5 hours and 2 hours respectively. Paper 2 is always a challenge with back to back TO BACK responses. It is therefore necessary that you are super strict on yourself and that you devote the recommended time for each response to maximise marks.

If you were to spend an hour on Mod A, you would only have 30 min for Mod B and 30 min for Mod C, even though each Module is worth 20 marks. That isn’t ideal. 40 minutes for each Module is a MUST!

Monitor your time after each paragraph - finish up that paragraph and move onto the next if you are lagging. It’s always better to make sure you have a completed essay with a strong conclusion rather than finishing your response when you’re halfway through analysing that quote. That being said, when the 40 minutes is up, it is definitely time to move on!

For a 40 minute response with 3 body paragraphs, an intro and conclusion, you might choose to devote 10 minutes to each body paragraph and 10 minutes to divvy up for an intro, conclusion and quick skim read.

(6) Quality not quantity

Quickly plan out each response. Consider how those key concepts/ themes relate to the question.

Be selective about the most appropriate textual evidence that is related to the question. You can still reverse-engineer your quotes and analysis to the question but make sure the link is not totally off topic... this will give the marker the impression that you are underprepared and leave them with a bit of an ick :/

So, it is now time to synthesise a year's worth of English and show the marker that you are prepared, that you DO know what you're talking about!
