Adjacent Homework Station

homework desk ideas

Create a bright and lively space that’ll get your kid’s creative juices flowing! The cabinets used here were ordered in a factory-applied yellow that echoes the hutch across the room. There’s no reason you can’t get this look with some vibrant paint and a weekend of DIY. Putting a desk in a space just outside the kitchen provides a bit of privacy for independent workers but keeps them close just in case they need homework help. Easy access to snacks is also a plus.

Storage-Loaded Homework Alcove

homework desk ideas

Build a space-smart little office right in your kid’s room. All you’ll need is some stock lumber, storage bins, and tracks for a sliding work surface.

Creative Closet Space

homework desk ideas

Take the doors off of a little-used closet and line the walls with a fun pattern to create a handy homework alcove. Your kid’s design ideas may not match your own, but applying their feedback will make the space—and studying—more appealing to them.

Armoire Office

homework desk ideas

This clever contraption features a door with a fold-down table for a work station that can be tucked away when the studying is done.

Cozy Corner

homework desk ideas

Some wall-mounted shelves or cubbies and a small computer desk makes for a quick and easy study station.

Corkboard Wall

homework desk ideas

Cover an entire wall in cork tiles or chalkboard paint to make a bold—and functional— design statement.

Kitchen Counter Homework Station

homework desk ideas

This tiny desk at the end of a counter makes for an open-yet-compact workspace that isn’t tucked away into a cabinet or closet. It’s perfect for younger kids who need homework help and supervision while working.

Plugged-In Study Nook

homework desk ideas

Carved into a kitchen, this desk faces a wall to limit distractions for students trying to complete their assignments. Built-in cabinetry makes for ample book and supply storage.

Great Room Homework Station

homework desk ideas

If you don’t have a dedicated room for a home office or study space, you’ll have to learn how to share. Living spaces can lend themselves nicely to multiple uses. Put a vacant wall to use with a built-in work unit. But if there’s a television in the room, make sure it’s turned off at homework time.

Light, Bright Desktop

homework desk ideas

For sit-down kitchen desks, like the one shown here, leave about 30 inches between the bottom of the lampshade and the counter.

Budget Home Office

homework desk ideas

Kelly and Wayne Averbeck of Jerome, Idaho, used leftovers and bargain buys to age their office to perfection. Similarly, you can use what you’ve got to incorporate a homework nook to your existing built-in storage. See An Office Update With Vintage Appeal to learn more about this budget remodel.

Rustic Reclaimed Study Station

homework desk ideas

Outfitting a room almost entirely with recycled or reused finds can prove a challenge. Too much salvage, and your space starts to look like a junkyard—which is why interior designer Sally Bailey lets simplicity reign in her home studio, shown here. This interesting space makes a great study station for older kids, while teaching the importance of eco-friendly design. For more on how you can get this look, see How to Create a Rustic Reclaimed Workspace .

Side-by-Side Seating

homework desk ideas

This kitchen office was designed for a mom who wanted a space she could share with her 12-year-old son. Key features include outlets for two computers, a cordless phone, and a single printer, undercabinet task lighting, and a dividing column of drawers to stow craft and office supplies. This arrangement makes a great cooperative learning area for homes with multiple students, too.

Creative Catch-All

homework desk ideas

When kids are in the picture, the kitchen office can be part homework desk, part high-tech hub, part first-aid center. That’s the case with this multitasker designed by Greenwich, Connecticut, architect Jay Haverson: The lower cabinets in the teak-topped desk store office supplies, phone books, and recipes. Emergency supplies, including medicines and flashlights, as well as electronics, are hidden up high behind touch-latch cabinet doors. A corkboard “backsplash” creates a home for memos.

Space-Saving Station

homework desk ideas

If you’re really short on space, adding a dedicated homework station can be as easy as building this. Like a ladder-rack, this clever unit props up against a wall and can be anchored or left portable.

Modern Home Office

homework desk ideas

Lift storage units off the ground! Build and hang large, high-impact shadowboxes instead of mounting traditional shelves.

High Impact Work Station

homework desk ideas

Boldly colored storage boxes are great for stashing supplies and matching binders are perfect for filing graded papers.

Hidden Study Station

homework desk ideas

Slim bifold doors make it easy to hide a workspace that’s in a common area.

Wall-Mounted Wonder

homework desk ideas

This compact, folding work surface doubles as covered supply storage unit. Create a similar space with easy-to-install wall-mount desks .

Adjustable Storage Station

homework desk ideas

Create a nook with a network of adjustable wall-mounted shelving if built-in storage is out of your budget.

Catch-All Cubby Bins

homework desk ideas

From wicker to brightly-colored fabrics, choosing the right storage bins for open shelving can add to the look of your space.

Pretty and Punctual Homework Area

homework desk ideas

Be mindful of clutter, but allow your child to pick a few decor items to personalize her space. A wall-hung clock will get your kid into the habit of scheduling and getting work done in a timely manner—or at least in time for their favorite TV show.

Walled-Off Study Station

homework desk ideas

Throw up some wall frames and create built-in room dividers, like the ones shown here, in a larger rooms.

Work Space With a View

homework desk ideas

Make homework time pleasant with desks facing a window. You’ll eliminate the need for using a lamp or overhead lighting in the daytime.

Kid’s Corner

homework desk ideas

A small corner of a kid’s room is all you need to create a homework station.

In-House Computer Lab

homework desk ideas

Make sure your study stations have enough outlets to power computers and charge gadgets. In homes with more than two kids, a set up like the one shown here ensures all of your young learners have an equal amount of real estate.

Reader-Created Study Station

homework desk ideas

Reader Carol Dregne of Galena, Illinois, created this vibrant work station for her two boys to share. The world-map wall covering makes a great learning tool—and beats an ordinary atlas any day of the week.

How to create a Homework Station for kids

Homework can be the bane of the school year and can often be the source of much drama in the household. “Where is my notebook?” “Have you seen my backpack?” and of course the often-used “Is your homework done?!”

Instead of playing into the drama, why not make your home set-up a point of calm amongst the chaos, and set your children up for success by creating (or updating) an incredible homework station.

Teaching your kids how to keep themselves organized is such an important skill. Tasks such as time management, tidying workspaces, and project preparation will not only help them with school work, but also with life and the challenges it brings as they continue to learn and grow.

As organizers, we have used these tips to create homework stations for elementary school aged children onwards and they can easily be applied to families looking to refresh their existing systems for kids of any age.

And big bonus – your kids will love their new work space so much, they may actually be excited to do their homework!

FIND THE SPACE

First things first, you’ll need to find a room or space in your home that works for your child. Depending on their age and how much assistance they require, this spot could be in a communal room (think kitchen or family room) or at a desk in their own room.

The ultimate goal is to get them working in a proper set-up with a table and chair instead of working from their lap – this way they establish good habits, can properly work on their handwriting and have room to spread out all their materials.

To spark your creative juices, we’ve pulled  30 of our favorite homework station examples  to serve as inspiration:

MAKE IT COMFORTABLE + FUNCTIONAL

Select a good desk chair that is both comfy and supportive. You don’t want a chair to be the reason that your kids are gravitating to doing their homework on the couch!

A few of our all-time favorite options:

Homework Station Desk Chairs for Kids

  • PBTeen Ergo Chair
  • Land of Nod Class Act Mint & Gold Desk Chair
  • Land of Nod Toto Desk Chair
  • PBTeen Emily & Meritt Bed of Roses Airgo Chair
  • PBTeen Rockin’ Roller Desk Chair
  • Walmart Kids Retro Molded Chair
  • Home Depot Modway Edge Office Chair
  • PBTeen Northfield Wingback Chair
  • Walmart Urban Shop Swivel Mesh Chair

Although it may seem obvious, having a  trash/recycle can  near their desk will encourage them to not only throw out their old papers, but also (perhaps with a little coaxing), to purge the garbage from their backpacks on a regular basis.

GET IT ORGANIZED

Wall Organization

Hang up a cork, magnetic or pin board for your kids to put papers, reminders and a calendar. This is a space that should be within reach of their desk so they can easily add/remove important items on a regular basis. It can also give them a chance to decorate and personalize their space – hopefully inspiring them to actually use it!

There are so many amazing wall organizing systems available – take a look at some of these incredible ideas:

How to make a homework station for kids - wall organization for a study space

  • PBTeen Cubby System Pinboard
  • PBKids Build Your Own Modern Gabrielle System
  • Land of Nod Stick With Me Magnet Bar
  • Land of Nod Cloud Corkboard

  • Umbra Trigon Bulletin Board
  • Sweet Jojo Designs Pinboard
  • PBTeen Dot Pin-It Pinboard
  • Land of Nod Beaumont White Shelving System
  • Land of Nod Colorblock Corkboard Letters
  • PBKids Butterfly Shaped Pinboard

DESK ORGANIZATION

Having supplies within reach of the workspace is key to their productivity (there needn’t be twelve trips around the house looking for the tools they need to complete each project!).

If there’s room on their workspace, consider keeping their supplies neatly organized in one of these nifty containers:

How to make a homework station for kids - desk organization for a study space

  • Land of Nod I Could’ve Bin a Things Bin
  • PBKids Rainbow Shaped Pencil Holder
  • PBKids Candy Canisters
  • Land of Nod Perfect Pitch Storage Caddy
  • Lani Ang 4-Grid Desktop Organizer
  • PBKids Printed Metal Lazy Susans
  • Container Store Acrylic Accessory Drawers
  • Land of Nod Multicolor Desk Accessories
  • Target Room Essentials Desktop Storage Unit

A version of these supply caddies can also be made for the road as there are often times that your child won’t be home when it comes time for homework (ie. at a sibling’s after-school sporting event!). Capitalize on that travel and waiting time with a to-go bag of their most needed supplies. We especially love  this portable storage one .

Make cleanup easier on everyone by using labels on your supply containers/caddy. This will help teach your children how to maintain their space and hopefully put an end to the continuing cycle of them asking where to put things when they are cleaning up.

We love  this no-fuss, inexpensive labeler  and also check out  these cool reusable chalk board labels .

As your kids get older, homework will often require the use of technology, which means cord and charging chaos! Keep their space tidy from the cord clutter by using some of these ingenious products and hacks to help cables stay neat and handy for when it’s time to plug in and charge.

ESTABLISH GOOD HABITS

Time Management

Give them the tools to manage their own time  by keeping a clock or timer at their workspace . Setting time limits for each subject can help them stay on track and is a life skill that will bode them well in life after school.

If you haven’t heard of  the Time Timer  before, it is an ingenious tool that visually shows your child how much time they have left for a certain task. It is easy for them to set themselves, and they don’t need to know how to read a clock in order to understand the concept of time diminishing.

Time timer

Subject Management

Help keep your child’s different subjects organized with  color-coded file folders  (1) — for instance, green for science, blue for english, etc. — so they can keep their notes organized on their desk and in their book bag.

Homework Station Ideas for kids | The best organization tips for how to create a study space at home for elementary school kids to teens. Many are DIY and portable - great for small spaces!

A  simple file folder organizer  can help keep their most important documents at arm’s reach ( this one  (2) even has some extra storage underneath!). If there’s not enough room on your desk for one, try  this nifty cascade folder  (3) that you can hang on the wall when working, and collapse and bring with you on-the-go!

In/Out Parent Bins

There’s always a plethora of school paperwork and updates that need to get safely into your hands. Consider setting up some  in and out bins  where your kids can drop off any papers that need to be signed or seen by a parent. You can then go through them each night, and put any that need to be returned to school in the “out” bin, ready for them to pick up in the morning and pack in their backpacks. With a little practice, this can be an extremely effective method that can be used all the way through high school!

It is vital for older children to start learning how to manage their own calendar. Whether it’s a  desktop planner , or a  large dry-erase calendar  that can hang on the wall, it’s a great way for them to visually see what tests and assignments are coming up, so they can manage their time accordingly.

Form a Routine

Now you’ve got their work space expertly organized, help your child form a routine of  when  they do their homework. It could be as soon as they come home after a snack, after ½ an hour of “down” time or after dinner. Whatever you decide, help them stick to their routine for the first few weeks by setting a timer or providing gentle guidance. Hopefully with their new homework station in place, they’ll feel a real sense of ownership and be excited to get down to work!

After their homework is complete, consider helping them put a routine in place that will help make the morning rush less hectic. It could be as simple as establishing a nightly backpack check ensuring that all the books and papers needed for the next day are all packed away. Or having them place their packed backpack in a designated space (preferably near the door!) so there isn’t a mad scramble to find it in the morning.

30+ Homework Station Ideas for Kids and Teens

Ready to make your family’s after-school or home school routine a bit less stressful? An organized homework station is the answer! I’ve included easy tips for small spaces and multiple kids so everyone can have a quiet, supervised space to study.

Collage of multiple homework station ideas for kids.

Table of Contents

It’s back to school time again and along with that comes a flood of emotion. While its sad to see our babies growing up, my inner organizing dork gets a boost of excitement. Create a cheerful space with these homework station ideas to inspire learning, even if you’re short on space!

A homework station is an inviting area that is dedicated to learning, homework, and informal learning like arts and crafts project. Although the kitchen table will suffice for a quick review or a worksheet, we’ve found it’s nice to have a homework zone where school supplies, books, and school calendars can have a dedicated place of their own. This cuts back on clutter and distractions.

I was inspired to write this post because of what I’ve learned from our frustrations with my son’s severe ADHD. At first, homework hour was a stressful experience full of tears (mine), yelling and every possible distraction under the sun. No exaggeration – 20 minutes of homework regularly took almost 2 hours. The material was never the issue. Home school moms, you have my admiration!

That’s where a dedicated space and equitable ground rules saved the day (and my sanity!)

How To Setup a Homework Station

I’ve learned a lot over several incarnations of our homework space. Creating a basic homework station area is simple and effective with these tips below:

  • Choose a quiet area. The biggest chance of success is to limit distractions. Preferably with a handy outlet for a laptop, or charging accessories like headphones. For my son, I find that headphones with music (on loop) works wonders.
  • Stock it with necessities. My son is the king of wasting time looking for misplaced items. Before official homework time, I ask if he has everything he needs to minimize the chances of him getting up from the desk.
  • Set a routine. Same time + Same space = Success. I personally give my son a short break after school before we get down to business.
  • Keep ’em close. While we must balance distractions, young children especially need supervision and usually help.
  • Minimize your own distractions. When my son was in elementary school, I couldn’t continue working from home during homework time. It wasn’t fair to ask him to stay focused, when I myself wasn’t focused on his questions. So I placed a tiny desk in our kitchen. That way I had both eyes on him while I washed dishes or prepped dinner. I was available, yet still productive.

Homework Station Supplies

Below is a handy list of supplies that are sometimes useful.

  • Pens and pencils
  • Loose leaf paper for scratch paper or notes
  • A timer or clock
  • A folder with pockets
  • 1 box of color pencils or crayons
  • Computer and charger
  • A planner (checklists are the lifeblood of this house!)
  • Craft supplies as necessary – glue sticks and scissors are examples
  • A comfy chair

Homework Station Setup Ideas

Finding the right space is often the most challenging part! I’ve included some inspirational ideas below to get focused. You don’t need to have an elaborate space, but these are great jumping off points to inspire your creativity.

Nooks & Crannies

White desk area in an alcove.

While most of us don’t have room for a dedicated office, there’s usually space to spare like under the staircase, an unused closet, or an awkward alcove . These centrally located spaces are often quiet and can be quite magical.

The unused space underneath a staircase like this desk is also perfect for using as a small homework station. This design utilizes fun lines and strokes to make it visually interesting.

Homework Stations that Foster Creativity

I honestly believe that adding a little creativity to the space fosters the desire to learn and leads to great ideas. Classrooms are full of stimulating decorations for a reason.

Here’s a few creative concepts to enhance your learning environment:

DIY wooden planks attached to white wall for hanging pictures at homework station in office.

A simple wall Children’s art display like the desk above allows kids to hang their accomplishments and past artwork.

Colorful kids room with desk area for homework and built in shelves.

Add a splash of color or maybe some wall flash cards.

While these beautiful spaces are awesome, sometimes we just need a simple option like this portable homework station .

More portable homework station ideas :

  • Use a bath caddy to hold supplies so you can grab and go.
  • A tiny desk and rolling cart makes it easy to move supplies where you need them, when you need them.
  • I love my car seat organizer for homework on-the-go. It’s a lifesaver when I have to run errands.
  • This fold away desk vault in a box is brilliant!

Room for Two (or more)

If you have more than one child, figure out how they learn best. Do they prefer to  study  together? Try setting up the desk so it can accommodate everyone. A collaborative study area is less isolating.

Office for 3 kids with photos above the desks.

I’m a big fan of this option . Everyone has dedicated space and no one is encroaching on the other’s turf.

This desk utilizes a stacking bookshelf to create two separate work areas and provide ample storage for each user. To save space, you could also have the desks face each other with the bookshelf between them.

This study zone melds learning and fun. It’s an especially fantastic space for large families. The multi-functional area can accommodate everything from homework, to art projects, and amazing Lego builds.

During my own work hours, I share a space with my son. Our craft room makeover project had to include key elements like tandem workspaces, ample organization elements and creative ways to display our greatest hits!

PRO TIP: Peg Boards are excellent additions to any Homework Station. They allow you to customize your storage and wall display without limits. Here’s how we built a DIY pegboard organizer.

Teenage desk ideas – 11 study tables to tackle homework, art and crafts

It's time to explore these teenage desk ideas if your older kid is still doing their assignments on the dining table

a neat wood and steel ladder desk design with velvet green chair in a living room by Wayfair

If your teen is still trying to do their coursework on the kitchen island or on the family dining table, it's time to consider some teenage desk ideas.

As schools, colleges and universities explore virtual learning, a proper table and chair, suited to their age and height is an essential bit of apparatus for their learning.

From 'smart' teenage desk ideas to ladder desks that make use of vertical space, give your teen the room they deserve to do homework or mindful doodling!

It's time to pass the test of providing a study solution to give your son or daughter. A stylish and functional desk in one of these teenage bedroom ideas will give them the best chances of buckling down. But, don't just recycle an off-the-shelf idea you've seen in your adult workplace.

Teenage desk ideas for successful studying

1. limit the risk of 0% battery with a smart desk.

Smart desk with integrated chargers and USB sockets by Cuckooland

If you've ever seen your teen scramble for a laptop charger, you'll know the sheer panic in their eyes. Hours of reading, research and creativity, only to be lost by a lack of power going to their electronic device.

So instead of calculating how long they've got left to save down their work, why not invest in a smart desk? Just like Amazon Alexa and Google Nest devices, smart home technology aims to make our lives easier. And this desk is no exception.

Today's features include premium Bluetooth speakers, wireless charging technology and a USB charging point. Toughened glass work surfaces are perfect for taking notes with a whiteboard pen. Simply let your teen wipe off their revision notes (or doodles) after use.

Luck ends there however, as it can't do their homework for them. What a shame.

2. Integrate plants into a teenage desk design

Wooden desk with black desk lamp and houseplants by Pooky

So you've got your ideal teenage desk idea - but now what? When it comes to accessorizing the space on and around the study table, you'll want to be creative and sympathetic to the environment.

Sure a pen pot and some sticky notes are practical, but have you thought about adding a few great indoor plants?

Asides from jumping on the biophilic trend, our green buddies can help reduce exam stress, increase productivity and clean the air. We're sure you might agree that this'll especially beneficial in a boys room idea .

3. Add a storage idea next to the desk for easy access

White puzzle desk with white wooden chair and pink cabinet by Melb Design Co.

Looking for a sweet girls bedroom idea that's full of space for stationery and sewing materials for a budding fashion or interior designer?

Asides for the actual teenage desk idea, you'll want to think of other ways to amplify her storage opportunities. A cute bedroom cabinet can de-clutter and organize her space effectively. Placed next to her desk, it will mean that the table isn't littered with lots of little bits and bobs.

Tidy desk, tidy mind as the old adage goes, so maintain her concentration by keeping a sparse but stylish space.

4. Incorporate texture into your teenage desk design

Cream boucle chair with black and rattan desk with pampas grass in khaki vase by Cult Furniture

By incorporating texture into your teenager's bedroom, you can create a comfortable interior scheme for them to socialize, relax or study in.

This cream swivel boucle chair with its super-comfy material will look perfect in a cozy bedroom idea . Coupled with a soft rug or flooring design, your teen won't want to venture out of their room. Bonus.

To style, add shades found in nature. We love this olive vase filled with on-trend Pampas grass to complement the rattan feature on the desk drawer. And, while Bieber may have got his peaches back in Georgia, you won't have to travel far for orchard-inspired hues.

This pastel orange bedroom paint color adds sunset vibes to this space. Shop Monticello Peach from Benjamin Moore for a similar shade.

5. Design a teenage desk idea underneath the stairs

Under the stairs teenage desk study area by Sharps

If your teenager has inherited a small kids bedroom, it's unlikely that they'll want to be trapped inside this box room to complete their after-school activities.

But, if your under-the-stairs space is not being used as a powder room or extra storage space, then use it in a way that'll enrich your teen's education experience.

If you're building from the wall out, you may wish to consider a built-in design. If not, modular desks and shelving ideas will allow you to be flexible once your teen has flown the nest. Better still, keep this solution for yourself.

It'll come in handy as a remote working spot or just a purposeful place to file your tax returns.

6. Use an awkward wall or alcove for a study corner

Greige desk in living room alcove with black fireplace and David Hockney wall art by Original BTC

Alcoves and awkward walls can be a real pain in the butt when it comes to living room ideas. But, styled correctly, you can transform this wall recess into tidy teenage desk design.

Opt for a slimline desk design to ensure that you use the snug space to your advantage. Lighting can be an issue in this area, so invest in slender task lighting solutions to reduce eye strain.

Sara Dawson, founder of The House Office , says: 'A corner desk allows home workers to make the most of the tightest of nooks, without taking up precious floor space and dominating the rest of the room – something which is hugely important if you’re working from your living space or bedroom.'

Explore overhead storage solutions to keep the floor space neat. For example, knowing how to hang a shelf with brackets is a life skill we wish we'd learned much sooner!

7. Add a footstool for a comfy teenage desk design

Wooden desk in study area with houseplants and footstool by Dunelm

When Canadian musician Drake penned the lyrics: 'I only love my bed and my mom, I'm sorry', we could definitely relate. While not a smart solution for studying, most teenagers will lay on their bed to read over their lecture notes.

Aside from looking a little lazy, studying in bed is not ergonomically ideal. Bad for posture; pillows and cushions provide a poor solution for your teen's back. What's more, multiple papers spread over your son or daughter's duvet will lead to decreased productivity.

Rather than forcing him or her to take up a teenage bedroom desk idea, a footstool can provide a comfy compromise. Adopting a semi-reclining position can keep both parties happy and gives them outdoor stimulus if the desk is positioned near a bedroom window design .

8. Add interest to a plain desk with a statement rug

Black glass desk with waste bin, cow print rug and Apple Mac monitor by Danetti

Sometimes less is more when it comes to a teenage bedroom desk idea. This is especially the case in a minimalist or modern bedroom design.

But, if you want to add some fun to your teen's bedroom decor, then a statement rug is a simple and budget bedroom idea to invigorate a bland space.

This cow-print rug will add expensive vibes to a boring black and white bedroom idea. But whatever design you decide on, add a rug gripper underneath. This will ensure the rug doesn't get damaged, the chair doesn't scrape or mark wooden flooring, and your child doesn't trip up.

9. Elevate the space with a desk ladder idea

Ladder desk idea with velvet green seat by Wayfair

The Cofield desk from Wayfair is a cleverly designed desk that brings out the best in a Scandinavian bedroom design. Made from powder coated steel and mango wood, it blends a somewhat industrial idea with classic charm.

A sturdy yet compact ladder desk provides a functional drawer and some serious shelving and most importantly, space to move around their room.

We'd style this teenage desk idea with faux climbing plants or maybe even some fairy lights for evening study sessions. Nadia McCowan-Hill, resident style advisor for Wayfair says: 'Ladder desks are a trendy option that are great for adding much needed storage into a small room, making it as easy as possible for your teenager to keep a mindful, clutter-free space.'

10. Create a comprehensive office with an armoire

Blue study cupboard by The Dormy House

Got a teen whose a bit of a Francophile? Then say Bonjour to this French bedroom idea .  An all-encompassing teenage desk design, an armoire can also fit seamlessly into a rustic bedroom design.

Commonly known as a desk or computer cupboard, treat it as you would a wardrobe storage idea. Generously proportioned, it is a space-efficient design that takes care of tucking away your teen's laptop and monitor with pull-out shelving.

In line with a clean aesthetic, this design by The Dormy House has holes at the back to hide unsightly wires and plugs. Double-hinged cupboard doors ensure that your teenager can hang notes and noticeboards for space-savvy study nook.

Once your child has no need for this cabinet, store crockery and dining essentials for a country kitchen idea that has a farmhouse feel. If placed in a communal area of the house these doors can be closed for when you're entertaining guests.

11. Add positive thoughts with a slogan wall design

'Think positive thoughts' slogan wall mural by Wallsauce.com

2020 was a tough year for teenage kids and adults alike. Social restrictions, not being able to see our family and a fair share of TV reruns. Not seeing our loved ones in real life may have contributed to a decline in mental health.

And so it was and still is important to be surrounded by positive messages and affirmations. This wall art idea by Wallsauce is supplied as a printed wallpaper design.

What makes it special is that the made-to-measure mural is bespoke to your older kids room idea , so is just as individual as they are.

McCowan Hill confirms this by saying: 'Don’t neglect the area around your teens desk. Thought-provoking artwork is wonderful for drumming up ideas.'

'Go for typographic designs with motivating slogans, perfect for focusing the mind or bold abstract prints are another great option for boosting creativity.'

How can I make a desk look good?

'Exams are an inevitable part of every teenager's life so a dedicated study area will always come in useful. Space saving options such as floating desks are ideal as handy shelving day to day, which can then convert into a space for homework or creative pursuits,' says McCowan-Hill.

'Be sure to choose a desk in keeping with your teens youthful space. Opt for fun, colorful products in  mood-boosting shades such as yellow, perfect for adding a feel-good fix to a tired space.'

'A neutral color palette of navy blue and grey will never date, adding grown up style throughout their teenage years. Style up a desk area with bold geometrics and faux greenery, to suit even the most novice of houseplant owners!'

Under the stairs teenage desk idea by Neville Johnson

'The area under your staircase is a great opportunity for fitted storage, and there are many design options for this space,' says Simon Tcherniak, senior furniture designer at Neville Johnson .

'From a compact home office with desk space to compartments for storing books, as well as open and closed shelving, fitted furniture is a great way of creating a multi-functional space.'

What is the best posture for sitting at a desk?

According to one expert, it's not just the colors and interior scheme you need to focus on. Chair design and movement can also be critical elements of a healthy study space.

Lucinda Newbound, partner at ergonomics company, Back in Action says:

'We’ve seen workers sitting in unsuitable dining chairs at the kitchen table, propped up on a stool at a kitchen island or breakfast bar and even working from bed and bath.'

'Any of these could lead to back pain, bad posture, sore neck and shoulders and more.'

'We wouldn’t wear clothes that stop us from being able to move, so why do we spend eight hours a day sitting on furniture that does just that?'

'If you’ve never sat on a chair that moves with you, rather than stopping your natural movement, it’s probably not something you’ve ever thought about… but it feels like freedom.'

'We live in the body of a hunter-gatherer, yet spend most of each day sitting still. Not surprisingly, we experience reduced circulation. In particular our blood and lymph systems work more slowly.'

'This is why movement is so vitally important.'

Home office desk ideas – 10 stylish choices for a home workstation

Home office in neutral colours with built in desk and cabinetry, sofa, and window seat

It can be easy to think functionality first when assessing home office desk ideas. But while a desk must be ergonomic, it should satisfy your sense of style in the same way as every other piece of furniture in your home.

Step away from the dull and the corporate and there exists a plethora of desks that could complement your home’s architecture and your tastes from the modern and minimalist to elegant period furniture. The materials from which the desk might be made together with color options add to the breadth of choice.

Here, we’ve put together desk inspiration you can combine with all your other home office ideas to make a chic as well as practical working area together with expert advice from interior designers to assist your choice.

Home office desk ideas

Your home office desk ideas might need to suit a separate room or small home office dedicated to your occupation and/or other tasks, or complement a space like a living room, bedroom, or even a landing, with proportions in consequence.

Consider, too, whether it should provide home office storage space inside it, or simply needs to act as a surface for a desk-top computer, laptop, or other devices. Alternatively, you might find that a desk organizer can help do this, should your desk be lacking drawer or shelf space.

1. Combine old and new

Home office with green walls and shelving, grey rug, antique desk, leather armchair and pendant light

Mixing older pieces with modern home office ideas will make your space feel individual and give it the appearance of a long-established and enjoyed room rather than an all-new addition, and a desk with period credentials or an authentic lookalike can be a great choice.

‘The desk is a vintage piece that was repurposed for this office and I love how it beautifully balances the high gloss lacquered paint and contemporary chandelier,’ says Courtnay Tartt Elias of Creative Tonic of this room.

2. Build in a home office desk

Home office in neutral colours with built in desk and cabinetry, sofa, and window seat

Consider both freestanding furniture and built-in options as part of your home office setup .

‘With more people working from home, it is important to create practical and comfortable spaces in which to work,’ says Louise Wicksteed, design director at London and Gloucestershire-based interior designers Sims Hilditch .

‘We suggest incorporating bespoke joinery into a study to make best use of the space available. Joinery with installed drawers and cupboards also provides great storage for office stationery, files and books which otherwise may clutter the area.’

3. Bring in color

Home office with blue desk and chair, wood paneled walls in white, and neutral patterned wallpaper

An office you’re required to attend by an employer may major in dull shades, but when it comes to home office design tips color is definitely an option. Wood furniture can be painted in the shade you prefer to make the workstation pop.

Set against white paneling this attractive blue desk has standout, and while the remainder of the scheme uses neutral colors the patterned wallpaper and mix of tactile materials gives the whole depth.

4. Position the desk prominently

Home office with marble look desk in centre, office chair, sideboard, and abstract art on wall

In a larger home office, moving the desk away from the walls is available as an option, and allows other working areas to be created against the walls.

‘To optimize space and function, multiple work surfaces are key,’ says Benjamin Johnston of Benjamin Johnston Design . ‘A floating desk is a great way to create a focal point as it draws the eye to the center of the room. We often add an additional work area behind the floating desk that can be utilized if needed.’

If the desk is to be located centrally, don’t forget to plan in outlets for computers and desk lamps to avoid trailing wires. Alternatively, opt for a hidden desk if you have a small home office or limited space in a separate room.

5. Change the lines

Home office with antique desk, green walls, neutral flooring and shutters on window

While home office desk ideas often feature straight lines, consider a curvaceous alternative for a softer effect. A vintage or reproduction design could create the contrast to the room’s horizontals and verticals that you’re looking for and will help bring the space to life.

If you don’t have the space for a larger desk like this one, consider a console-style design with turned legs which can introduce elegant curves to a home office – albeit on a smaller scale.

6. Fit a home office desk into a small space

Home office desk ideas with small desk

Sometimes fitting an office into a small home can be a challenge, and space has to be found within a room that’s used for another purpose or even in an area such as a hallway or landing. If that’s the case, a wall-mounted desk is a neat solution.

An attractive wood such as oak can ensure it’s a tactile and appealing surface even though it may be minimal. But, although it may be narrow from side to side, do ensure any desk in a small space has sufficient depth so that you are not resting your wrists on the edge of the desk as you type. Most importantly in a small space, make sure your home office lighting ideas are up to scratch. You won't be able to get much work done in a dimly lit room.

7. Consider a glass-topped desk

Home office with neutral decor, glass and wood desk, desk chair, shelving and pendant light

A glass-topped desk can help maximize the daylight in a home office, as the light can move through the surface. Teamed with trestle legs glass creates a piece that’s smart and contemporary, and provides a pleasing contrast of materials.

In this office, the desk’s legs are part of the restful color palette. ‘I absolutely love this home office,’ says Susan Spath, president of Kern & Co and principal designer of Susan Spath Interior Design . ‘It is the ultimate luxury home office with ocean views, glass top desk, custom cabinetry, and a cozy sitting area.

‘Work can be stressful at times and it is important to create a space that is peaceful. This neutral home office paint color palette with a hint of blue creates a calm environment.’

8. Select a desk for a bedroom

When considering home office desk ideas for a bedroom it’s important not to create a jarring note, compromising the room’s style and disrupting the ambience.

‘A crucial factor when including a study area in a bedroom is to consider its impact on the wider scheme,’ says Melissa Hamilton, interior design director of Studio Indigo , who designed this space. ‘Even when this desk is not in use, it is a very aesthetically pleasing arrangement and gives joy throughout the day.’

9. Embrace unusual materials

Home office with metal desk and floor to ceiling wood shelving, wood floor, rug, and neutral walls

Make a work area striking with your choice of material for your home office seating ideas and desk. ‘A metal-wrapped desk adds a statement while infusing modernity to a study evocative of 1940s industry in a way that is both surprising and memorable,’ says Caron Woolsey, founder and principal designer of CW Interiors of this home office.

‘A vintage mid-century rug anchors the space and validates the classical styling that is anything but typical.’

10. Make the desk area dynamic

Home office with desk and chair, blue and white geometric wallpaper on one wall, and neutral floor and wall, and rug

A home office desk may need to be positioned against a wall but, if that’s the case, consider hanging a patterned wallpaper behind it that adds energy to your working area. Here it’s a mid-scale geometric in blue and white that adds zing.

If you prefer using paint rather than wallpaper, warm colors like coral or peach are vibrant choices or you can turn up the stimulation dial with hues like yellow or orange.

Which way should a desk face in a home office?

A separate room as a home office gives you free rein to place the desk as you prefer. Locating it looking towards the door ensures it is the focal point it should be as you enter the room and allows you to see who’s coming into the room and avoid being taken by surprise.

However, you may wish to position the desk to give yourself a view from the window either straight ahead or to one side, especially if the outlook is an attractive one. Taking a break from looking at a screen and focusing on objects further away at regular intervals is recommended in order to avoid eye strain.

If the window is behind you either because of the room’s layout or because positioning the desk with an outlook is too distracting, make sure you choose a window treatment such as a Venetian blind to avoid uncomfortable glare on your screen.

What can I use instead of a desk?

A console can be an alternative to a desk if you need just a surface on which to place a laptop and a streamlined piece of furniture. A further option if space is limited is a floating desk – in other words, a wall-mounted surface. If you take this route, make sure that the surface together with the wall and fixings are suitable for the weight of the items you will place on the desk.

A small dining table could also prove a suitable alternative to a desk. This is particularly the case if you need a generous depth of desk to spread out on. As with the other options, however, it won’t provide storage space inside, and you’ll need to introduce other furniture to cater for documents, stationery, and other home office essentials.

All it takes is a little creativity.

Build It Yourself

diy desk in home office

If you have wood scraps on hand—and you're already pretty handy with power tools—consider building this DIY structure. The trickiest part is getting your measurements right thanks to these simple sawhorse brackets .

Make Your Dining Table Serve Double Duty

home office ideas

Combine your dining room and home office with a long modular table that can function as a surface for both eating and working. In this space designed by Devin Kirk , the chairs are staggered to allow the homeowners to spread out and get down to business at the same time.

Bring Your Patio Furniture Inside

desk in blue home studio

Revive an unused console table or outdoor patio table with a fresh coat of paint (or leave it as is in more rustic spaces). Here, crisp white bursts against a monochromatic blue backdrop, while a comfy throw pillow recasts an iron garden chair for the indoors.

Install a Shelf With Brackets

diy desk floating shelf ideas

This home office may not look like anything fancy, but it gets the job done. A floating shelf gives you a dedicated place to crank out work when you're short on space. Just be sure that it's deep enough to fit your laptop and installed at the proper height, then slide over a chair and get emailing.

Transform a Breakfast Nook

colorful corner in designer home

You don't need much to carve out a proper workspace. Simply place a table lamp on a side table, slide up a chair, and voila, you've got yourself a little makeshift desk. This vibrant vignette designed by Anthony Baratta is a maximalist example, but any combination will do in a pinch.

Make It Neat

diy desk ideas

Turn a nubby, uneven surface into a professional job site by adding a glass top to it. A skirt like the one on this vanity designed by Cameron Ruppert Interiors allows you to store folders and paperwork beneath it while ensuring a polished, uncluttered aesthetic.

Add Bells and Whistles to a Floating Shelf

floating desk ideas

Designed by Lindsey Bond, this workspace feels modern yet laidback and features a floating desk secured to the wall in a main bedroom. An antiqued mirror reflects light and makes the room feel larger, while the ghost chair keeps bulky furniture to a minimum for a wide-open feel. Follow Bond's lead and upholster your floating shelf in leather, then add some nailhead trim for a tailored look.

Go Antiquing for a Secretary

red wallpaper in home office

Keep your eyes peeled for a secretary desk to rehab at local antiques shops, vintage stores, estate sales, or flea markets. This one in a bedroom designed by Libby Cameron was refurbished with new paint, but you could also swap out the hardware or affix a thin marble slab to the top of it to add a personal touch.

Secure a Shelving Unit

wall unit diy desk

By installing a shelving unit on the wall in an unused corner of his apartment, Tariq Dixon , co-founder of furniture brand TRNK, turned a tiny space into a writer's retreat.

Use an Old Picnic Bench

diy desk ideas

Use an old bench, side table, or console table like Leanne Ford did in this artist's retreat. If you choose a reclaimed wood piece or rustic outdoor option, you won't have to be too precious with it, especially if you work with paint and other messy materials as an artist or designer.

Find a Good DIY Kit

Verdant greens set the scene for a calming home office designed by Ingrid Rasmussen . This kit lets you assemble a similar wood desk yourself in just a few easy-to-follow steps.

Build a Custom Fold Out

william brockschmidt, brockschmidt coleman

A DIY or custom fold-out desk is the best option for tiny work-from-home spaces where additional furniture just isn't in the cards. Brockschmidt and Coleman customized this built-in bookshelf with a fold-out desk so that work could be hidden at the end of the day. Out of sight, out of mind—and out of the way.

Stack a Cubby Shelf On Top

diy desks

Stack a shoe cubby or DIY floating shelf unit on top of a console table to give it the added perk of storage space. Not only does it look more visually interesting, it'll definitely help you stay organized.

Corner or Nook Shelf

shapeless studio

Because it's in an alcove, the desk in this bedroom feels totally separate from the rest of the space. Though an architectural nook can make a floating-shelf-desk hybrid look extra neat, a floating shelf in any old corner will do, too. Designed by Shapeless Studio , each nook and cranny in this NYC apartment reaches its full potential.

Use a Pantry Rack

home office

This converted kitchen pantry proves that you can make just about any space work-friendly with the right organizational tools. If your surface area is large enough, use trays on the desk to corral odds and ends and keep your papers organized. If you don't have room on your desk, secure a corkboard to the wall and take advantage of vertical real estate.

Home office desk ideas come in all shapes and sizes – from the traditional desk and home office set-up to compact desk-in-a-cupboard options that keep everything hidden out of sight once the working day is done through.

While space on the kitchen table might have sufficed during the lockdown, a permanent working-from-home arrangement calls for a dedicated home office desk ideas. ‘When designing your workspace, it is important to create an interior with a clear point of difference from the rest of your home, all the while not losing those touches that make your home so comforting,’ explains Shelley Cochrane, accessories buyer at Furniture Village .

Home office desk ideas

With many of us having to share our workspace with other members of the family, home office desk ideas need to be highly versatile. If you don't have a dedicated home office then you need to opt for home office desk ideas that look homely and doesn’t dominate the space. Desks that make clever use of tight spaces are a sensible option for small home office ideas .

‘Choosing multi-purpose pieces is key,’ says Marc Epstein, Interiors Expert at CARME Home . ‘Desks that double up as dressing tables mean that your work can be hidden at the end of the day. Enabling you to create an effective work-life balance without the temptation of jumping on your desk just before bed.’

‘And technology-infused furniture is set to be a big trend this year,’ adds Marc, ‘with desks with built-in chargers and speakers so you can charge up your laptop or create a relaxing working from home playlist without having to move from your workstation.’

1. Create a relaxed scheme with a rattan desk

rattan desk in by a window in a living room.jpg

Solid wood isn’t the only option when it comes to home office desk ideas. Rattan offers a lighter alternative that will prove less obtrusive and integrate into the room more seamlessly – especially important if it is in a bedroom or living space. Featured here, Oka ’s Albertine desk takes its inspiration from the rattan furniture found in the Ladies’ Tea Room of New York’s Prince George Hotel in the 1900s. It is paired with its Claverton dining chair in Sage linen and oak which together create the perfect addition to a traditional scheme.

Rattan is also a great material if you want to create a country-style home office .

2. Contain your home office in a dresser

workstation contained in yellow dresser in living room with wooden table in foreground

Not everyone has the space for a full-time home office – especially if it is only used on an ad hoc basis. Despite having the appearance of a dresser, this cabinet actually houses a complete work space. Neptune ’s 4ft Chichester workstation has enough room to house a full-sized monitor, shelves and printer, and has a cut-out on the reverse to run cables and offer ventilation. The front panel, which is disguised as a drawer when closed, lowers to offer a flat surface for writing or a keyboard. The true beauty of this design, though, is that at the end of the day, the doors can be shut ensuring there is no work clutter in sight.

Opt for a vibrant shade, shade as this vibrant Saffron colourway to add colour to a home office .

3. Add character by going antique

antique bureau in hallway with green and white botanical wallpaper and antique lights

From the archetypal school desk to grand writing bureaus, antique desks come in all forms and styles and will instantly imbue your home with an unrivalled sense of character.

‘A desk can be a psychologically potent piece of furniture,’ says BBC Antiques Roadshow expert Marc Allum . ‘Of course, there are plenty of modern flat-pack home office desk ideas that can be crammed into a spare room, but think about your environment and add some style. If working in a family space, use a desk as a multi-functional piece and don’t be scared to go antique.’ For similar try Vinterior.

Opting for a beautiful antique, that is decorative in its own right, will also help you to sneak a home office into any room .

4. Create a home office under the stairs

home office understairs with wooden desk and lighting

Usually home to clutter or converted into a downstairs toilet, the space under the stairs has plenty of potential when it comes to housing home office desk ideas. However, it is not as simple as just adding a desk and chair. The space will be dark, so lighting – a mix of spots and lamps – will prevent eye strain and create a bright space. It is also advisable to choose a chair that can be tucked flush under the desk to prevent it from being a trip hazard.

5. Opt for a trestle table to ensure enough space for crafting

trestle table with wooden antique armchair and open shelving storage craft materials

Crafting demands space, so a trestle table might offer a better work surface than traditional home office desk ideas. Opt for a design, like that seen here, where the height can be adjusted to suit your needs. Ikea ’s Lagkapten/Mittback desk in dark grey and birch is similar. Pair with open shelving so you can have all of your materials easily to hand.

6. Combine storage and workspace with an architects plan cabinet

craft room with architects plan chest with wooden blue bar stool chair

When it comes to craft rooms, storage is important to keep supplies organised, and this can be both pretty and practical. This beautiful antique architect's plan chest has eight drawers, perfect for keeping materials safe and organised, and neatly fits under a wall-mounted deep shelf to create a versatile workstation. For a similar chest try Mark Hilton Antiques .

7. Go for a neat desk and storage set-up

home office with computer with chair

For workloads that require lots of filing, paperwork and kit being close to hand, organise a desk arrangement that factors in plenty of easy-access home office storage ideas . Make use of the area above the desk with a wall of shelving and cubby holes that can be used to stash all manner of office essentials. Add a memo board that spans the length of the desk. Match its colour to files and storage boxes for a neat, colour-coordinated look.

Opt for a wall-hung desk like this one as a brilliant space-saver. Raising drawer units off the floor will give plenty of leg room and ensure that the area underneath the desk doesn’t look crowded and cluttered for a more spacious feel.

A compact hutch-style desk takes up far-less floor space than a standard-sized desk. There's still plenty of surface space for a laptop or somewhere to sit and do paperwork. Add a run of shelves above and fabric-covered noticeboards on the wall. Use a pretty pattern that complements the wall colour to keep the space from looking too spartan and office-like.

8. Take your desk into the garden

Garden office with desk and desk chair, wall panelling, hanging planters and pegboard

If you don’t have the luxury of a spare room or dedicated home office, then stealing space from other areas of the home can be a canny way of working in a desk set-up. Look at hallway areas, upstairs landings, empty recesses and alcoves and you might well be able to carve out an office nook in an under-utilised area. You could even head outdoors with a garden office idea .

9. Spread out with a longline desk

home office desk ideas with double desks

If having plenty of surface space is essential (often a must in a craft room idea ) or you need a desk arrangement that can accommodate two people, then consider a pair of side-by-side desks to create an extra-long desk set-up.

Instead of using two individual home office desk ideas, create a side-by-side arrangement. Use a longline length of worktop with individual filing drawers and cabinets at intervals underneath. Buy worktop by the metre to allow you to tailor the length of your desk to suit what space there is available for more of a bespoke feel.

10. Double-up with back-to-back desks

home office desk ideas with white double desk

A dedicated room as your home office gives you free rein when it comes to deciding on the best working arrangement. This makes it easier to avoid home office design mistakes . If there are two members of the family sharing the same WFH space, then consider positioning desks back-to-back centrally in the room instead of against a wall as is standard.

Positioning desks in the centre of a room can create a more sociable vibe and allows the space around the perimeter of the room to be better-used for storage. Make it more flexible by opting for height-adjustable desks that be set at the most practical height for each user.

11. Build your own desk

attic office with cream wall and apple computer and chair

Taking over an under-utilised area, such as an alcove, cubby or under stairs recess, is a brilliant way of creating a WFH nook if space is super-tight. All that’s needed to create a mini desk set-up is a length of worktop, cut to size and slotted into the space.

Add extra office storage if space allows. Standard flat-pack kitchen cabinets are inexpensive, come in a range of widths and heights and can be slotted in underneath and around the desktop. Paint units a complementary colour and add contrast handles for a chic look that will blend in with the room’s decor.

12. Take over a corner

home office desk ideas with corner desk

Carve out some extra office space by making use of an out-of-the-way corner to set up desk. A neat triangular-shaped desk or L-shaped arrangement – like The Cotswold Company's Chester dove grey corner desk – will slot neatly into a corner and give extra surface space for a smaller footprint.

Look for a desk with built-in cupboards that will allow bulky tech equipment or clutter to be hidden away. Plus a slide-out shelf that will conceal the keyboard when not in use.

13. Find the perfect fit with a modular desk

home office with yellow coloured and desk ideas with corner desk

Tricky corner or awkward space to fill? Opt for a modular desk system – like Bronx oak effect modular USB desk from Next  – that can be tailored to suit your exact needs in terms of size, desk space and storage. Build a whole wall of work space and storage, starting with one basic corner-shaped unit and adding sections until you reach the required size.

Make a style statement by painting the feature wall idea behind an open system like this in a cheery shade or bold contrast colour so that the frame and woodwork stand out against it.

14. Slot a mini work station into a living space

home office with white wall and chair and lamp

Shared work and living spaces have become the norm with more of us now working from home. But it can be hard to switch off if the work area completely dominates the living room. Opt for a neat ladder-style workstation – like this Fulton ladder desk from Dunelm – that has ample space for laptop work. Style it up with plants, books and decorative bits and bobs so that it blends in with its surroundings the rest of the time. A tidy desk lamp makes a great home office lighting idea .

15. Conceal your desk in a fitted cabinet

Home office desk ideas with desk in cupboard

Another option that will ensure that the desk set-up doesn’t intrude too much in a living room or dual-purpose space is to opt for a hideaway desk. Conceal a desk inside a cupboard or fitted wardrobe idea . You'll have enough space for a pull-out desktop and storage, but the beauty is that everything can be hidden away behind closed doors at the end of the day.

Hideaway desk options range from off-the-peg cupboard and desk combinations, to pricier built-in options that can be tailored to fit room specifications. These may include lighting and add-on storage elements. Alternatively, if your home has a large cupboard that could accommodate shelves and a pull-out desktop, it’s possible to convert it yourself with a little work.

16. Opt for a mix-and-match desk

home office with computer on desk

Put together your own bespoke arrangement if you can’t find a desk that meets your specific needs. Ikea has a range of off-the-peg office buys that include filing units, cabinets and trestle bases that can be mixed and matched in a combination or configuration that suits. You could even look at a clever Ikea hack to achieve your perfect solution.

Worktop is sold by the metre, allowing you to create a desktop to the size required, whether that be neat and compact or an extra-wide desk arrangement.

17. Stay stylish with a discreet desk in a shared space

home office desk ideas with floating shelves

If all that’s required is desktop space for occasional working, then a stylised arrangement won’t ruin the aesthetic of a living room the rest of the time. A stack of floating shelves, one above the other, creates a wall of storage. It doubles as a display space with papers and office bits hidden neatly away in smart box files. Then, just pull up a chair for the perfect laptop landing spot when it’s time to get down to some work.

18. Squeeze a desk into an alcove

Grey and white study room with bookcase and desk in alcoves either side of fireplace with wood burner and unusual shaped mirror above

Make use of an empty alcove idea or a tight nook if you’re needing to set up desk in a spare room that also doubles up as a guest bedroom. A narrow, floating desk won’t protrude into the room too much. And it can do double duty as a mini dressing table with the addition of a wall-hung mirror.

Opt for a colour scheme in shades of blue, soft grey and blush. This creates a calming mood that will aid creativity when working but be restful enough for a good night's sleep.

What should I have on my home office desk?

‘Put away any non-essentials and prioritise what you have out on your desk,’ says Vicky Silverthorn at Youneedavicky . ‘Is it something you use frequently or only occasionally? I archive anything that I don’t need to put my hands on daily, such as paperwork and equipment, so that only essential items are out and things I use less frequently are put away.’

‘And make sure everything has a home - so tidying is something you do almost without thinking about. Desk tidies are useful if they suit your belongings, but not if they’re too small and fiddly. And don’t have excess supplies, bulk buying just creates the need for more storage.’

How can I make my home office look good?

‘Change the scenery,’ says Vicky. ‘Clear your work space at the end of each day. If you don’t have a designated office and your desk is in a living room , change its look by putting a plant on top, or perhaps a scented candle or vase of flowers, something to symbolise that work time is over.

30+ Kids Desk Ideas

For the perfect homework spot.

Young boy reaching for a toy on top of a desk

It’s more important now than ever to have a designated desk space at home that keeps your kid engaged in learning. A desk is a versatile piece of furniture for anyone of any age. But for children, it provides a special place for them to grow and learn through a myriad of activities.

From reading, and writing to arts and crafts, your kid’s desk will become their favorite workplace in the house. Check out these kids’ desk ideas that will inspire creativity and imagination, while keeping organized!

Study Room Desk Ideas

It’s going to take more than just placing a desk in a corner to make it an effective study room. If you’re having trouble getting your kid to study, the following study room desk tips should help.

1. Add a Corkboard

One way to improve a study room is to install a corkboard above the desk. This allows your child to pin important documents and anything else they may need to remember. Pinning artwork allows them to customize the space while still leaving plenty of room for work on the desk itself. You can also buy a desk with a corkboard to avoid installing one on the wall.

White table, chalkboard and stuffed dog.

2. Use a Chalkboard

A chalkboard introduces that classic classroom sensibility while still providing all of the same benefits of the more modern dry-erase whiteboard. Encourage drawing and writing with chalk to promote those skill sets in a new medium. Try chalkboard paint or a chalkboard decal to make installation easier.

3. Install a Whiteboard

Similar to the chalkboard, a whiteboard makes for a valuable addition to a kids’ desk area. Your kids will be able to draw and write while giving the room a more modern aesthetic. If you have a magnetic whiteboard, your child can also post up fun photos, school documents or other decorations to customize the space.

Pegboard with drawings and photos pinned to it

4. Add a Pinboard

A pinboard adds adaptability to a desk space. You can pin important reminders, favorite pieces of art and prized photos on the wall, without cluttering up the desk below. They’re typically lighter and easier to install than a chalkboard or whiteboard— especially if you pick a no nails pegboard for the wall.

5. Use a Lap Desk

If you don’t have a lot of room, lap desks are a space-conscious alternative. Just as the name implies, they allow your kid to work from anywhere in the house. Lap desks are also a good option for younger children who may not fully need a desk yet. There are also fun-shaped lap desks that’ll appeal to many kids.

6. Include a Stuffed Animal

A stuffed animal or two can make a desk seem cozier and inviting. Add some to the desk area to give your child a friend for the occasional support (or hug!) Encourage your child to choose their own stuffed animal so that they can build a bond.

7. Hang Wall Art

Artwork with simple, inspirational phrases can help motivate while adding some pops of color. As your child grows, wall art can be changed out easily to meet a more sophisticated taste.

Two white pots, one with a succulent plant inside

8. Place Succulents Around the Room

A recent study from the University of Hyogo in Awaji, Japan has shown that indoor plants like succulents may reduce stress. This can help improve the overall well-being of your growing child. Transfer it into a planter to add some extra style to the desk. Just be sure that your succulent choice is kid-friendly and avoid spiky plants!

9. Add Fun Wallpaper Around the Desk

Wallpaper can be used to differentiate the study area in your child’s room. Work with your child to choose a wallpaper with fun shapes, a simple design or solid colors. It’s also a good way to provide color to the room.

DIY Desk Ideas

You don’t always have to make a dent in your budget if you’re in need of a new desk! If you’re feeling handy or are a lover of the refurbished look, the DIY option is a great way to go.

Here are a few DIY desk ideas that anyone can make at home with materials they already have:

White desk with plush white desk chair

10. Refurbish a Sewing Cabinet

Old sewing cabinets can provide a fun new work area with an old school feel. First, be sure to remove any wires and sharp metal objects. Then, sand down the tabletop to smooth it out and remove any splinters. You can even get your kid involved by painting it a fun color and adding their favorite stickers to the sides.

11. Repurpose an Armoire

If you have an old armoire that you’re not quite ready to get rid of, consider repurposing it as a spacious desk space for your kid. Depending on the height of the bottom shelf, it can be as simple as opening the doors and adding a desktop. If the height is too short, you may need to adjust the legs and/or consider extending the desktop so that a chair can fit underneath. For the final touch, add a bit of paint and dress it up with pictures and other desk accessories.

12. Build a Rustic, Handmade Desk

If you’re comfortable working with wood, try creating your own desk from scratch. For a simple desk, you only need five pieces: a flat top and four legs. Building one from scratch also allows you to customize it to your kids’ size and pick the color, making it a truly unique piece.

13. Refurbish a School Desk

If you happen to find one, you can refurbish an old school desk for a traditional classroom set up. A school desk is space-conscious and can fit in almost any room, which makes it perfect for any type of house. It might be a good idea to sand down the desktop to smooth it out and clean up any rust you may find. To make this space extra comfortable, place a seat cushion on the desk chair for a cozy addition.

14.  Mount an Old Table to the Wall

Another way to conserve space is to install a wall-mounted desk. Save time and resources by using an old table and attaching it directly to the wall. Depending on the size of the table, you may need to remove or replace the legs to match your kid’s height. Their arms should rest on the top of their desk without any discomfort, so be sure to measure before mounting.

15. Repurpose a Nightstand into a Desk

If you need a new place for your nightstand , repurpose it as the base of a new desk. Take a flat surface for the desktop and attach two legs on the left or right side. On the opposite side of the legs is where the nightstand will go, which provides plenty of storage space. Don’t forget to paint the nightstand a fun color that your kid will love!

16. Make Use of an Old Cabinet Door

You can also make a desk out of an old cabinet door by placing it on a flat surface and adding the legs underneath. Give the cabinets some TLC by smoothing them down and adding a fresh coat of paint. To tie in a more creative touch, add a chalkboard wallpaper on the top of the desk so your kids can draw to their heart's content.

17. Make a DIY Pop Up Desk

If you prefer the DIY route, you don’t have to limit yourself to just reusing old furniture. Instead, think outside-of-the-box and use other materials. For example, you can create a simple DIY pop up desk using a cardboard box. To give it the desk feel, incorporate accessories, such as a nameplate, pencil holder, paper bin or even a mailbox. This is a fun way to get creative without breaking the bank and can be a project for the whole family to participate in.

Kids Desk Storage Ideas

Between school projects, artwork and homework, your kids’ desk can very easily turn into a cluster of scattered crayons, dried glue, and messy papers. With proper storage and organization, your kids' desk area will become the perfect place to focus and be productive.

Here are seven of our favorite storage ideas that can work with any type and style of desk:

18. Use a Storage Box

Storage boxes are a simple way of organizing extra clutter and can be made out of any type of container. Something small like a shoebox on the desk will do the trick, or you can add a toy box to store larger items like books. Having a storage box like this nearby can help encourage your kids to keep clean and keep the clutter under control.

19. Incorporate Storage Carts

Storage carts are a convenient storage solution to any kids’ room. They’re maneuverable and spacious so you can place them anywhere. To incorporate even more storage, add one to both sides of the desk for convenient access to anything from crayons to toys.

20. Attach a Hutch to the Desk

A hutch is a simple and affordable way of upgrading the space on your kid’s desk. There are a variety of styles, ranging from a simple hutch with a shelf and drawers to a smart hutch with charging ports. Whatever you choose, attaching one to your kid’s desk improves storage while keeping the floor space clear of extra furniture.

21. Install Wall Shelves

If you’re looking for more storage space but are also space-conscious, consider installing shelves above the desk. Wall shelves provide storage while keeping the floor and desk space clear and make it easy to add some decoration. If you want to be a little more adventurous, try a rope wall shelf for a unique way to  encourage them to stay tidy.

22. Place a Bookshelf Next to the Desk

For larger rooms with more space, a bookshelf provides storage for everything from textbooks and binders to toys and blankets. Put one bookshelf on one or both sides of the table, depending on how much extra storage you need. Add baskets to the shelves for a decorative touch that doubles as a way to hide clutter,

23. Upcycle Everyday Items

Consider improving your kid’s desk storage by upcycling everyday items. For example, hold writing and coloring tools with an old mason jar or tin can. Or, file homework and other school-related paper in a redecorated cardboard box. Upcycling items you otherwise would have thrown away is both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Desk Accessory Ideas

Utilize your desk space and add some accessories. Accessories can provide a nice decorative touch and can aid in organization. Here’s a list of ten desk accessories that every kids’ desk should have:

24. Pencil Holders

A pencil holder is an essential when it comes to desk accessories. These holders keep your kids’ pencils, pens and any other writing utensils they have in one place. Go one step further and add a  lazy susan  to their desk. They feature four separate compartments, which makes it easy to separate all your kids’ gadgets and supplies while also keeping them accessible.

25. Desk Mat

A desk mat is a protective covering that preserves the desk surface and allows personalization. Your kid can place artwork, a calendar or A+ papers underneath the mat for display. They’re also easy to remove and clean, making them a perfect mess-proof addition to a kids’ desk space.

Clocks act as a classic decor item for desks as well as a functional one. Pick an easy-to-read digital clock to keep your little one on time. Or, use a fun  analog clock that adds a stylish touch to their desk. Choosing an analog clock is also a great way to teach them how to tell time the traditional way.

27. Piggy Bank

For a modern twist on a classic favorite, consider adding a mini piggy bank to the desk. A simple piggy bank like this can quickly add style and help teach them about spending, saving and budgeting.

Acrylic Surface Desk Mat

28. Desk Lamp

Desk lamps are a staple for every kid’s desk and can contribute to your overall design. A simple, bright lamp can help keep kids focused on their reading and work. Keep it simple and cute with a colorful solid task lighting lamp .

29. Trash Bin

Kids sometimes make mistakes, so include a simple trash bin in their desk area to make sure all of that clutter stays in one place, rather than the floor. Kids are more likely to use a trash bin if it’s out in the open and easy to see, so make sure it’s next to the desk instead of under. For extra flair, use a unique scallop topped trash can .

30. Backpacks

A backpack is an accessory every kid needs to hold their books and other school supplies. If they’re younger, encouraging your kid to pack their own backpack provides them with a task they can do all by themselves. Keep it by their desk or on a wall hook so they know where it is at all times — especially when they’re ready to go back to school!

Reading is a fundamental skill to develop early in a kid’s life. Encourage your little one to read by keeping a few books on or near their desk. Start them off with a personalized book to encourage them in the beginning, and then slowly introduce them to some  classics .

32. Bookends

Spruce up a pile of books with some stylish bookends. Having some on hand allows you to place books in an easy-to-access area. Since this is for your kids, grab some bookends that are age-appropriate and won’t be too distracting.

33. Tablet Stand

Kids often use tablets due to their compactness and versatility. A tablet stand will keep it upright, making the tablet easy to use, and keeping it from falling on the ground. Place a tablet stand on their desk for whenever your kid is using one for any online classes or to simply enjoy some cartoons.

34. Homework Holder

To keep school work and other papers together and in one place, consider adding a homework holder  to your kid’s desk setup. This will ensure optimal organization, plus it’s a fun and personal way to keep their work nice and tidy.

A and Z bookends

Last but not least, complete your desk setup with a comfortable chair! Children’s bones are still developing, so investing in a sturdy and ergonomic piece is important in supporting their posture and willingness to stay at their desk. Pick an adjustable desk chair so that it can keep pace with your kid’s growth, and don’t be afraid to go with a bold and fun color that your kid will love!

Navy desk with adjustable red desk chair

A desk creates a place for your kid where they can concentrate on studying or drawing. Since they’ll be spending a lot of time there, it’s important to get a quality desk with good storage and organization accessories. With these desk ideas, you’ll be able to achieve the perfect stylish space for your little one to enjoy.

That drab home office?

As Hilary Duff says, ✨so yesterday.✨

There’s no better feeling than gliding into a home office that you designed and curated specific to your design passions and helps you function in your work-from-home job. And there’s no better way to make your desk more inviting than being surrounded by things that spark joy for you.

That said, it’s easier said than done to snap your fingers and make a home desk aesthetic that works for you, so today, we’re breaking it down into the smallest little tips so you can start creating an aesthetic and cute home office space that you love.✨

Without further ado, here are 31 home office ideas to get your WFH desk a little more moody, a little more cozy, and a little more vibey, so you can be your most creative self, from aesthetic desk accessories to room design ideas and everything in between.

desk aesthetic

  • Fairy lights , whether on your walls, hanging from your ceiling, wrapped inside a decor piece, or somewhere else creative. These instantly add some whimsy and texture to create a truly aesthetic room decor environment along with a little bit of lighting to boot!
  • An authentic salt lamp , for warm and soothing vibes to your desk decor. Avoid these natural desk lamps if you have cats or pets that are prone to licking things, as these aren’t safe for your fuzzy little friends.
  • Air plants add some greenery to your desk space without making it impossible to keep up with them! These need a sprinkling of water occasionally to thrive.
  • Hanging terrarium , to keep your air plants, your favorite crystals, and other small pieces together in one place.
  • Crystal display for decluttering your crystal collection for the wall. I love this planchette-shaped one I got from Etsy a few years ago!
  • Dried lavender, for use as a no-upkeep floral bundle to place as added desk décor to instantly make your desk look like there’s nature all over it.
  • Corkboard vision board, for visualizing your goals and manifestations each and every day. Tip: Have it detached from the wall so you can move it around as you please, especially if you don’t want extra noise filling up your walls.

8. Macrame wall hanging, for some immediate warmth and artisanal texture, especially in a flatter space without vintage home aspects like wainscoting or stone.

9. Antique clock, to find yourself at a local thrift store. I know, I know, we have our phones for this, but it’s nice to have something on the wall you can see all the time. Plus, it adds some texture and character to your space.

10. Lifted purple wireless aesthetic keyboard , to complement your desk with some extra pops of color and a fun typing experience to make work a bit more fun.

11. Chunky knit blanket , because who says you can’t work and be cozy at your office desk?

12. Woven rolling storage basket and filing cabinet, as an organizer and storing your papers but making it cute.

13. Pastel desk mat , for giving you a colorful desk without sacrificing aesthetic. (There are lots of patterns and edge types of your desk pad to choose from, btw!)

14. Gallery wall frame set, like this natural wood set of 3 from Etsy or this 9-piece one from Amazon .

15. Oil diffuser , for keeping at your work desk (but far enough away from electronics) to keep your favorite smells in the room. It’s also important to limit these if you have pets, especially cats. Plus, this matte black design makes your desk look aesthetic as heck!

16. Palo santo and/or sage bundle to burn by your desk workspace.

17. Decorative bowl for burning your palo santo, sage, or for storing little trinkets.

18. Coasters , so you can sip your favorite tea stress-free with a cute aesthetic and protect your desktop.

19. All-natural candles to decorate your desk with so your space can smell beautiful and be toxin-free. This candle should complement your office furniture and desk design through a simple, minimalist design that almost makes it look like a curated home decor piece on its own.

20. A dreamcatcher near your desk area, because who says these can’t just live in your bedroom? If you’re doing it right, you should be dreaming and in-flow in your office, too!

21. A tarot deck for when you need to pull for yourself, like this Brian Froud one we have.

22. An altar corner, designed with crystals, your tarot cards, candles, and anything else you need for moments of peace and prayer in your home office.

23. Stained glass in your windows, to make inbound sunbeams turn beautiful colors and shades and really make your desk a colorful spot to get creative.

24. A snack corner to add to your office space hidden in a drawer so you can have easy access without loud labels clouding up your aesthetic.

25. Crystal suncatchers to reflect even more sunlight into your work area without it being overly bright.

26. A beautiful and functional desk chair, like this Branch ergonomic chair or this kneeling wooden chair. Related:  The 6 best office chairs for long hours and working creatively (2023)

27. A new desk, like this Sand & Stable Tobage Cain Drawer . Bonus points if it can be a standing desk too, like this Fezibo adjustable desk!

28. Color-changing light bulbs , so you can change the vibe of your WFH space every season, every day, or every hour if you’d like.

29. Cute hardware to add character to your furniture , whether they’re old vintage pieces looking for another life or a new piece

30. A natural jute rug, to add to the aesthetic of your space through warmth and grounding to your space without toxins.

31. Gorgeous witchy boho curtains , because who wouldn’t want these luxurious flowing beauties near their super cute desk?

I hope some of these aesthetic desk setup options help you get a little creative with your workspace so you can make your desk area exactly as you want it to be. There are so many decor styles you could be influenced by but with these little moody and cozy desk decor ideas, hopefully, you have a jumping-off point to make your WFH experience just the way you’d like.

An easy way to spruce up your space is with wall shelves! These are easy to hang and allow you all the decorating space you could need while still keeping your desk space open.

These DIY pinboards are basically just the bigger version or grid collages. Obviously, they are a bit more labor-intensive than other collage methods but don't they just look SO good?! These are especially great to make if you are looking to fill a large amount of wall space.

I had so much fun decorating the BSL office so I loved being able to include the rest of the team in its design. We all had the best time customizing these pinboards and it instantly made the office feel 10x more personal.

Ready to make one of your own? You can find  exact instructions here on how to DIY one of these on your own! I promise you won't be disappointed...

If there is one thing that will instantly make your desk look more put together it's with a desk chair without wheels and an accent pillow. Obviously, a rolling desk chair may be essential in some offices but solid legs chairs are definitely the way to go if you're looking to create a professionally designed looking space.

You can go so many different design routes with this based on your style but if you're in need of a little inspiration you can find some of my favorite desk chairs without wheels , and the best places to buy throw pillows here .

14. Frame Large Posters

HAUS AND HUES 16"x20" Beige Natural Oak Wood Frames Set of 1 for Posters, 16x20 Frame Wood, 16x20 Poster Frames for Wall, 16x20 Frame Light Wood, Picture Frames 20x16 (Beige Oak)

If you haven't caught on by now, frames almost always make any space look better. I personally frame EVERYTHING from photos to my custom printables to pull the entire look together.

This idea is one you can use for both desk decor for guys and girls just by switching out the print you frame! You can find all kinds of trendy prints on Amazon, Society 6, and Etsy that will make the perfect statement piece on your desk.

Better yet, I've got all you money-conscious decor lovers covered with my custom printables that you can download for FREE !

15. Decorate Walls With A Photo Collage

aesthetic desk decor

Who said organization can't be stylish? Switch out your traditional office desk decor with trendier options like this gold file organizer!

Fill your wall space with matching photo collage grids and there you have it, a budget-friendly desk makeover that will take your desk decor from "ugh time to work..." to "I can't wait to work!"

16. Decorate With Baskets & Table Books

Goodpick Cube Storage Bins - Towel, Book, Cloth, Shoes, Closet Shelf Woven Baskets for Office, Baby Laundry, Toys, 13''x9.8''x9''

Let's be honest, it's super easy to just throw around things we aren't using at the moment onto the shelves or in drawers especially when working at a desk. So, it may not even be the desktop that is making your space look dull but actually the mess underneath.

The perfect solution to a messy-looking desk is a super easy one: baskets. Buy a couple of cute baskets to organize any shelves and add neatly organized stacks of aesthetic table books and you are guaranteed to be instantly happier with your space.

You can obviously buy table books at your local book store or Amazon but I'll be the first to admit, they are definitely a little pricey. I used this easy table book hack in my apartment instead and it saved me so much money while looking just as good (if not better).

17. Matching Minimalist Desk Decor

Desktop Calculator, Solar and Battery Dual Power Basic Function Calculator, Ultra Slim Elegant Office Calculator with Large Display and Big Sensitive Buttons for Business (White One Pack)

Decorating your desk doesn't have to mean filling every square inch with decor. Keep it clean and simple with matching desk essentials like this laptop stand and desktop mat.

You would probably already have most of these desk decor items anyways so all you have to do is replace the normal versions with more aesthetic desk decor options!

18. Maximize Space With Simple Decor & Organization

desk decor items

See, you can make even the smallest desks usable and super aesthetically pleasing! And honestly, the smaller the desk, the less you need to worry about decor.

Accenting with a few staple pieces such as framed prints and a small mirror, and using small desk organizational products will allow you to keep your desk clean and organized while still creating a focal point in your space.

19. Vary The Size Of Your Wall Decor

ArtbyHannah 8-Pack Neutral Gallery Wall Frame Set with Decorative Art Prints, Picture Frames for Collage, Art Decor with Assorted Size 11x14 x2pcs, 8x10 x4pcs, 6x8 x2pcs

One of the biggest tips I have for designing a unique and interesting space is to incorporate variety into all of your decor. Whether it's mixing different sized vases and plants or hanging a variety of picture frames, this is one tip you 100% need to be using when picking out desk decoration for work or your home office.

File organizers, notepads, pencil holders, keyboards , etc. are all things you will want to make sure you have. But remember, you can still buy "cute" versions of all of these things to make your desk look more put together! After that, you can start to decorate by adding fun desk lamps, picture frames, and other personal items to make your office desk more comfortable.

How do I make my desk look aesthetic?

The best way to make your desk look more aesthetic is by sticking to a design style or color scheme! You can do this even while including your ordinary desk essentials with a matching mousepad, laptop stand, and organizers.

How can I make my desk more productive?

The key to making your desk a productive space is organization. While you do want to make your desk feel personal, you don't want to leave yourself without desk space to work. You can add all kinds of organization products like file folders, baskets, and cute note pads that are not only aesthetically pleasing but more importantly will make your desk a productive place to work.

How do I make my office feel cozy?

To give your office desk that "cozy" feeling, add a throw pillow to your chair, a small rug, and subtle lighting with a desk lamp. You can also bring an essential oils diffuser or candle to make your office smell as good as it looks.

I love this space. The colors are classy and don’t scream a homeschool space, and it’s not large. This room looks like it may originally have been an office or den, or it could be a corner in their living room!

A Space for Multiple Ages

homework desk ideas

If you have multiple kids at home, all in different age ranges, then your homeschool space needs to reflect that. For the little kids, the Flisat tables that lift up to expose bins are perfect for all those sensory activities preschoolers and toddlers love!

The desks lined up on the wall are perfect for older kids, especially with the drawers to keep their individual supplies and paperwork.

To create this look, use the Alex Drawer units and put a butcher block countertop over them. This allows you to separate the desks later or keep them together, but make sure you sand and use a polyurethane seal over the countertops.

Get these white, modern chairs to go with your homeschool desk!

Homeschool Mom + Homeschool Desk Combo

homework desk ideas

This is a great use of the space you may have available to you. I like how the space for the homeschool mom also can be used for other things like budgeting, bill paying, etc – Versatility!

The mom does is this white cottage road desk paired with a comfortable, high-back executive chair . Mom has to be comfy while teaching!

Then, your kids sit at a white computer desk , perfect for two kids to work side by side along with high-back accent chairs .

Small Spaces Inspiration

If you think your small area won’t work for a homeschool desk, think again!

homework desk ideas

Having dedicated spaces for your homeschool room doesn’t have to look like an entire room just for schooling. It can be a small area off the side of your home that fits a small desk with a bench and storage space for all of your materials.

This is a small dining table with two benches but one is removed. So easy!

Spaces for Each Child

homework desk ideas

Do you have three or more kids that are similar in ages? This space works great for older kids, and you have plenty of storage for their art supplies, laptops, and more.

You’ll need four or more metal drawer units and three or more solid table tops to place on top for the desks. Don’t forget a few rolling chairs !

A Table as a Desk for All

homework desk ideas

This space feels so cozy and makes you want to come in and start learning!

Instead of a homeschool desk, this homeschool mama uses a table that her husband built, but you can find a similar one here on Amazon . Then, she painted these X-back child-sized chairs to match the table.

A Cozy Corner

homework desk ideas

All you need is a cozy corner, even if it’s the landing area off your second floor stairs, to create the perfect homeschool desk. Grab a small desk with a wooden chair or even a modern chair to go with it.

Don’t forget a rolling cart on the side to store art supplies and other needed homeschool items. I love the inclusion of the comfortable armchair and little knitted ottoman for an extra place to read.

Surrounded by Storage Space

homework desk ideas

This homeschool space looks like it has custom built in units for all the homeschool storage you need. If you don’t have custom built-ins, don’t stress!

Grab matching white bookshelves and attach a table top between the bookshelves with anchors. Since you’re attaching a vintage brown table top , I recommend ensuring the bookshelves are sturdy and well made!

These adorable rolling chairs come from World Market, and I love the colorful rug to bring excitement into the space.

Streamline, Modern Homeschool Desk Space

homework desk ideas

Create a modern homeschool desk area with this streamlined design. I love the feather wallpaper ; it makes this room versatile because it can be used for different uses later.

This particular homeschool desk was built into the house, but you could create a similar look by attaching several floating desks in a line together! These rattan frame chairs give a coastal, modern vibe to the room.

Corner Homeschool Desk

homework desk ideas

If you feel like you won’t have a space to homeschool without a dedicated room, think again! Find a unused corner in your home, add a simple desk with a wooden chair , and you have the perfect space for your child to work.

The added chalkboard and ABC card border makes this space super adorable!

Simple Homeschool Desk for 2

homework desk ideas

If you have two kids you’re homeschooling but don’t have a lot of space, I love this idea for a homeschool desk. All you need is two two-cube shelves for storing your homeschooling supplies and an 8-foot table top .

Grab two white wooden modern chairs to go with it and a large chalkboard for the wall to complete the space.

Using an Old Kitchen Table

homework desk ideas

In reality, you don’t need a special desk or anything to give your kids a place to learn. All you need is a dining room table with some chairs, the perfect learning environment for a family.

This room is so cozy with the fire place, chair cushions for a place to read on the floor, and plenty of bookshelves in the corner.

Remember, homeschooling takes place anywhere no matter if you have a designated homeschool desk or not. Learning happens everywhere!

After reading about the best home office desks, scroll further to find out what to look for when shopping for a desk and how we narrowed down our favorite picks.

This desk checks off everything you'd need for a WFH space. Our pros love that it features a large surface area, so you’ll have plenty of room for a monitor, laptop, keyboard, photos and notebooks. It comes in three wood shades and is supported by black steel legs that should suit most rooms and mesh with other furniture. Several reviewers on Amazon write that the desk is sturdy, easy to assemble and attractive. While we haven’t yet tested this model in the Lab, our experts appreciate the shelf situated underneath the worksurface for storing easy-to-reach items. We also like the addition of a metal cable grommet hole cover so you can hide messy cables.

Sometimes you just need a desk that gets the job done. Look no further than Ikea if you need a home office desk that’s simple, functional and affordable . While we haven’t tested this model in the Lab, customers rave about its great value and easy assembly. Our pros like that it’s lightweight so it shouldn’t be a hassle to move around your home, and that you can customize the color of the tabletop surface and legs.

If you live in an apartment or don’t have room to set up an entire home office, consider this mini home office desk from West Elm. Our pros love that it can double up as a trendy side table when you’re not working and that it features two convenient storage drawers. “The metal legs and textured wood drawers — with just enough space to hold things like notepads and pens — are a nice touch,” says Senior Home Editor at Good Housekeeping, Monique Valeris . “It's also lightweight, which is key for a design fanatic who likes to switch up their layout from time to time. I can easily move it around my workspace whenever the mood strikes.”

The pros at the Good Housekeeping Institute love this desk from Humanscale so much that we named it a winner of the 2022 Home Renovation Awards . The 28 x 36” bamboo work surface not only looks sleek but is compact enough to suit most workspaces and has enough room to accommodate a laptop, keyboard and other work-from-home essentials. We love that the desk features an electric touchpad, making it easy to adjust the height of the desk so you can choose whether you prefer to work sitting or standing throughout the day. “The pneumatic lift was easy to use and worked smoothly,” says one tester. Others noted that the desk is easy to move around from room to room thanks to casters.

We love this standing desk not only for its practicality but also for its hard-to-beat price. With space for a computer monitor and laptop on the top shelf and a dedicated area for a keyboard and mouse on the bottom shelf, it's the perfect solution for working comfortably in tight spaces . Though this desk's height can only be adjusted manually, we like that you have the option of working standing or sitting. We also like that the desk's design features wheels so you can move it around if need be (or lock it into place).

This home office desk from Nathan James is the ideal size for all your home office essentials like a monitor up to 28 inches, a keyboard and a mousepad. We love that it features a built-in drawer so you can hide your keyboard on weekends — and the pinewood legs are a stylish touch. While our pros haven’t tested this model in the Lab, online reviewers say that they like the desk’s high-quality design, perfect size and excellent customer service .

Whether you've moved into a new home and want to build out your home office or revamp your existing workspace, our pros recommend this L-shaped home office desk from Fully. We love the massive work surface area that enables you to fit multiple monitors thanks to an impressive weight capacity and that it has a built-in electric motor so you can a djust the desk's height and alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day . It also comes in left and right configurations so you can choose the best fit for your office. "The standing desk from Fully is far superior to any regular desks I've owned. It's comparable to the quality of sit/stand desks at offices," says one tester.

Our engineers and analysts love this pick if you're looking for an adjustable home office desk. We found that it remains very stable while also being able to support a monitor and other accessories. Executive Technical Director at the Good Housekeeping Institute, Rachel Rothman , recommends the Uplift desk for couples or families thanks to the desk's impressive height adjustment range . Our testers also like that this desk features handy memory settings so you (and others) can adjust the desk to your optimal working height with the press of a button on the keypad.

Who said your home office desk has to take up precious space? Our pros love this wall-mounted floating desk that looks like a bookshelf but features office conveniences like a cable and wire hole. It has just enough room for your laptop and mousepad during work hours, and extra shelves can be used to display photos, books and accessories. With a load capacity of 66 lbs., you shouldn't expect to fit a monitor on this minimalist desk, but it's a great solution for anyone who doesn't have room for a dedicated office in their home . Amazon reviewers note that they were pleasantly surprised with the desk's sturdiness and how much it can hold.

Consider this desk from Ikea if you have a few notebooks, headphones and papers you'd like to be able to keep organized. We appreciate that it's both affordable and practical, featuring multiple drawers and shelves for storage . Best of all, if you ever need to grow your home office, this desk can be combined with additional desks and drawers from Ikea's Micke line. Our experts also like that it's available in four colors and includes a cable organizer so your work surface never feels cluttered with wires.

How we chose the best home office desks

linebreak

The experts and analysts at the Good Housekeeping Institute have been testing the best home office essentials since way before working from home became so common. When choosing the best home office desks, our pros evaluated a number of key criteria such as ease of assembly, ease of use, size and design and special or customizable features like portability and electric height adjustment. Several of the models we feature were tested in real homes and evaluated for construction and design quality by our pros. Chief Technologist and Executive Technical Director, Rachel Rothman , coordinated tests of several of the standing desk units and similar models on this list, evaluating based on design, comprehensive height range and ease of assembly from a consumer's standpoint, as well as desk stability throughout multiple hours of standard use and ease of adjustability through electric or manual operation. For desks that haven’t yet been vetted in our Labs, our experts reviewed online consumer feedback as well as specifications.

What to look for when shopping for a home office desk

✔️ Size: Before you get ahead of yourself and splurge on a home office desk online, first make sure to measure your space. Then determine how large of a working surface area you'll need. Do you need room for a monitor or just a laptop? How about accessories like a keyboard and mousepad?

✔️ Height and adjustability: Next, ask yourself who will be using the home office desk. If you plan on sharing with a partner or family member (especially if they're taller or shorter than you), consider purchasing a desk with an adjustable height. Desks that feature adjustable heights are often standing desks, so you can alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day.

✔️ Design and appearance: Do you want an L-shaped desk, or do you prefer a compact, minimalist desk that can blend in with your other furniture? It's important that you pick a desk that's not only functional but one that suits your style. After all, you'll be looking at it every day.

✔️ Storage: Several of the desks above feature storage options like drawers or shelves while others only come with a work surface. If you're someone that likes to use multiple accessories (think notepads, headphones, etc.), consider a home office desk with built-in storage.

✔️ Ease of assembly: Some desks will be easier to put together than others. Check reviews for whether other consumers found the assembly to be cumbersome. Also, consider the weight of the desk so you have a better idea of how heavy it will be when delivered.

✔️ Special features: Some desks are super minimalist, while others have customization options like the ability to change the finish, add a wire management kit or monitor arm and more. Pay attention to what extra add-ons are offered if that's something you're interested in.

 kids-desk-workspace-country-living

Family Room Desk

 kids-desk-ernst-country-living

For a busy family, a vintage desk—with plenty of drawers—right in the middle of the f amily room can make the most sense. Adjacent bookcases with tagged fabric bins with the names of each family member allow everyone a little personalized space for their stuff.

Desk Fit for Three

Three kids can pull up adjustable chairs and study a number of subjects all at once thanks to this long, counter-height desk . The homeowner used vintage trophies as pencil cups and converted a vintage blue toy car into a light fixture to keep this hardworking space from feeling too grown-up.

Dual-Purpose Room

This boy's room has plenty of space for schoolwork and play. The space-saving schoolhouse desk is an ideal spot for homework. The homeowner affixed Lego panels to the wall, and now her son's creations are on display and easily accessible. The bed and globes are family heirlooms.

Vintage Pine Desk

A vintage pine table and factory stool set the stage for "playing school." The wall behind, kept bare except for chalkboard paint , allows the kids to draw and work out math problems, then erase and start again.

Sophisticated Writing Desk

Nothing too cutesy here (except that pup!): This sophisticated writing desk fits in with this room's soothing gray palette , perfect for the very serious teenager.

To maximize every inch of their 1-acre lot, these homeowners converted a backyard shed into a quiet space for the kids to use as a playroom, study, and art studio. Clear containers on shelves corral craft supplies.

Staircase Hideaway Desk

Don't overlook that unused, awkward space under the stairs! These homeowners made the most of that square footage by placing an oversize desk and chippy painted chair there, and now it's the perfect spot for taking care of business.

The No-Desk Kid's Desk

When you have a tiny tot who's just learning to read, a daybed provides plenty of room for figuring out letters and words.

A vintage table does double-duty as a nightstand and desk. Two mismatched chairs add to the collected feel. Unlike more modern pieces, vintage furniture often lacks ample storage. In this room, oversize wicker baskets provide plenty of room to hide supplies and toys.

When kids reach a certain age, they will start needing a dedicated space for creativity and focus. That’s where children’s desks come in. It’s the optimal piece of furniture, creating a private area for both fun and focus. It acts as a safe haven for play, and then shifts to a place of concentration for serious schoolwork.

In other words, a desk that fits the needs of your child is essential. That’s why we have a large selection of different desk solutions, so you can make sure to encourage all of your kid’s interests and passions. And there are lots of styles and materials to choose from too.

Children’s desks for focus and studies

Getting your kid to do their homework might feel like trying to move a mountain. A helpful step in the right direction can be to create a study-friendly area. Here you can encourage your child and help lay the foundation for good studying habits.

For optimal focus and minimal distraction, here are a few tips. Organize your child's desk with items that are only needed daily. If the essentials are within arm's reach, your child won't have to interrupt studying to go and get something. Stash pens, scissors, rulers, and erasers in a pen stand, so no rummaging through messy drawers are required.

Limit decorations to a maximum of three. Otherwise there's a risk that fantasy and daydreaming will outwit focus. Consider a left-to-right workflow, as that is the most usual one. Or experiment with arrangements until you find the perfect one for your child.

And don’t forget the importance of a proper  kids desk chair . If your kid is going to spend hours poring over books, the seating needs to be comfortable and kind on the body.

Kids desks where fun and fantasy are at the center

Just as we adults need to do things, we love to refill our energy, so do our children. Make sure to help meet that need by arranging a place to relax and have fun. With a desk as the foundation, the only limit is imagination.

Invest in tools, colors and comfort to help your child express creativity. It can be children’s books, colorful crayons to paint, and a place above the desk to put up their drawings. Or it might be a computer or touch pad for playing games, which can stimulate learning, improve problem-solving skills and increase the ability to process information.

If you’d like to use the desk for both work and play here’s a tip: create an arts and crafts box! Using clever  children’s storage  or a fun  toy box  for paints and crafting materials, you can easily bring it out when inspiration strikes. And once another masterpiece is done, you can stow the box away to keep the desk looking neat.
