Our National Flag

The flag which denotes the freedom and sovereignty of a nation is known as a national flag. The national flag of Bangladesh is bottle green in color and rectangular in size with the length to width ratio of 10:6. It bears a red circle on the background of green. The color in the background represents the vitality, youthfulness and greenery of Bangladesh while the red circle symbolizes the rising sun and the sacrifice of lives in our freedom fight in the Liberation War of 1971. The national flag was designed by painter Kamrul Hasan. Its size is confined to10:6. It was first hoisted on the March 3, 1971 by ASM Abdur Rab at the historic ‘Bat tala’ in Dhaka University  campus. It is hoisted at govt. offices, semi-government, self-autonomous buildings, educational institutes etc every day. But it is kept at half-mast on any national or international mourning days. Our glorious national flag was purchased at too great a price at the cost of a sea of blood. The national flag of Bangladesh is our pride. Our feeling about the flag is very sensational and respectful. When we see our national flag, our heart is fulfilled with joy and respect. We bow down our heads towards it. Our duty towards it should be responsible and sacrificial. We should take an oath that we must save the honor and dignity of this flag even instead of our lives. The flag is the source of spirit, hope and inspiration.

When the flag is hoisted, we all stand up and sing our national anthem to pay respect to it. The national flag is hoisted regularly on the working days in schools, colleges, offices and courts of the country. It is brought down before the sundown.

Its misuse:  The national flag is sometimes seen to be used lightly and indiscriminately as if it were a mere plaything like a toy flag in the hand of a child. It is to be deeply regretted that our people are often found wanting in this respect. We sometimes find torn or soiled national flags on house tops and cars, even in dust-heaps. We also sometimes find these flags in the hands of demonstrators marching along the streets. All these prove that the offenders are not conscious of the sanctity of the National flag.

How it should be used :  As the National flag is the symbol of the country’s honour, great care is to be taken in using it. It is to be regarded as something holy, and should, therefore, be kept above all

internal controversies---------------- political or religious or ideological. Theremay be quarrels in between parties and groups, but there can be no quarrel with the National flag; all should bow down before it and keep its honour bright. It should not be lowered before anything. No other flag or emblem should be placed above the National flag or to its right. When carried in a procession, it is to be borne on the right shoulder of the standard- bearer and carried in front of the procession.

Conclusion:  To every independent nation, its flag is dearer, holier and more valuable than all other earthly possessions. The national flag is the symbol of the honour and ideal of the nation and as such it is held in the highest esteem by every patriot. So, we should remain ever-ready to die for its defence if necessary.

Our National flag is the pride of our nation. It symbolises the unity of the people of India belonging to different religions. The honour and respect for our country and its national flag should be immense from us. Every country has a national flag. Our National Flag is called ‘Tiranga’ which is based on its appearance as a tricolour. The saffron colour is the topmost, the middle colour is white and the lowermost colour is green. There is a navy blue Ashok Chakra in the middle stripe of white colour which contains 24 equally divided spokes.

Our national flag was adopted on July 22nd, 1947, which was some days before the Independence of India i.e. 15th August 1947. The national flag of India is also known as the ‘Tiranga Jhanda’. Our national flag was first adopted officially during the meeting of the Constituent Assembly on the 22nd of July, 1947. It was adopted 24 days before the Independence of India which was on 15th August 1947. The National Flag of India was designed by Pingali Venkayya in a horizontal shape containing 3 colours, saffron, white and green, all three were in equivalent proportions and the following sequence, the saffron was the topmost colour, the white in the middle and the green was the lowermost colour. Here I am talking about the thing which is mighty for all Indians, for which every Indian is mad for serving, it is the only thing for which all Indians think about their religious and caste boundaries. So here the thing I am talking about the national flag of India i.e. TIRANGA (Means the combination of three colours). The history of Tiranga was very old. Mahatma Gandhi first spoke about the need for an Indian flag in 1921. He proposed a flag with the charkha or spinning wheel at the center and if we talk about its look it is not always like that as we have seen today. In the nearby time of 1947, it was of three colours in which saffron is at the top, white is at middle and green is at the bottom. 

In the middle of which there is a charkha that is known as Ashok Chakra. In it saffron represents sacrifice, white represents peace, green color represents progress and charkha represents the spirit of swadeshi. To represent Gandhi Ji’s fight for freedom but nowadays we are seeing it as in the same colours with the same message but with chakra, in place of charkha as the symbol of the wheel of duty with 24 spokes it is the only reason for what designers have put it in the flag. The designer who designed the modern flag is Pingali Venkayya. The flag has been designed on the bases of swaraj flag or the flag of Indian National Congress.

Importance of National Flag: 

It means a lot not only for the officials of the country but also for civilians. The rules say that when two flags are fully spread out horizontally on a wall behind a podium, their hoists must be towards each other. Furthermore, the saffron stripes should be uppermost. When the flag display is on a short flagpole, then the mounting should be at an angle to the wall. Moreover, the angle is such that the flag is draped tastefully from it. When flags display occurs on crossed staffs, then hoist should be towards each other.

Our flag has a long and interesting history. Our leaders fought under it to free our country from the British rule. When our leaders designed our flag, they first put the spinning wheel in the center. It was the symbol of Gandhi Ji’s ‘Swadeshi’ movement. After independence, it was replaced by Ashok Chakra.

The national flag of India consists of three horizontal bands. They are of different colors. That is why the Indian flag is called the tri-colour. It is rectangular in shape. The saffron colored band on top stands for the spirit of sacrifice. The center white band represents truth and peace. The dark green colour at the bottom is for growth.

The Ashoka Chakra in the center of the White band has 24 spokes. Like king Ashoka, It stands for spreading the message of peace and love to everyone. It is dark blue in colour.

We must treat our national flag with respect. No other flag should be placed above or to the right of the national flag. On national festivals, we fly it on all the important buildings and offices. On sad occasions it is flown at half-mast.

Every country has its own national flag . Every country is proud of its national flag . The people of the country pay the greatest respect to their national flag . They do not let it down. They would like to keep it up even at the cost of their own life. Our National Flag has three colours- Saffron , White and Green . It is also called the “ Tricolour ”.

The colours of our Flag are significant. He Saffron at the top calls upon us to be brave. The White in the middle tells us to be true and the Green at the bottom calls upon to be good. There is a blue Chakra on the white part. It stands for the “ Dharmachakra ” of Asoka, the Great.

The National Flag of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 22 nd July 1947 . It was presented at the midnight session of the Assembly on 14 th August 1947 . The use of the flag is unrestricted during the days of national rejoicings such as Independence day , Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, etc. Normally it is flown on all important government buildings.

Minnesota's new state flag is drawing mixed reactions

AYESHA RASCOE, HOST:

Minnesota flew its new state flag for the first time on Saturday. For some people, the new flag was a cause for celebration. For others, it's an unwanted change. Dana Ferguson with Minnesota Public Radio was there yesterday to see it happen.

DANA FERGUSON, BYLINE: It's just after sunrise on Saturday morning, and I'm standing on top of the Minnesota Capitol. Looking out across the Capitol Mall, I can see a blue-on-blue banner just across the way. The old flags were retired just before the sun came up. To mark Minnesota's Statehood Day, new banners went up here and around the state.

ERIK NELSON: I like that it has the shape of Minnesota as the main design feature. I like the colors, the dark blue and the light blue.

FERGUSON: Erik Nelson is a 27-year-old from St. Paul. He submitted a new design for the flag last year, along with thousands of other Minnesotans. His idea wasn't picked, but he did plan to get together to celebrate the new design.

NELSON: It's essentially a Minnesota Statehood Day party, but it's especially to celebrate the new flag.

FERGUSON: Nelson encouraged guests to make Minnesota-themed foods and dress the part.

NELSON: One person - I think she's coming dressed as a loon. Some people I know are coming dressed based on the flag. My boyfriend and I are being Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox.

FERGUSON: 34-year-old Jimbo Tarpy (ph) has an outline of the state tattooed on his back, but he waited to fill it in until the new flag emerged.

JIMBO TARPY: People always say, put some trees in there or put this in there, put something in there. I basically said, I'm not putting anything in there until we get a new flag.

FERGUSON: But not everyone has warmed to the new design.

BRAD KANIG: Look at it and you see the dark blue, and you see the lighter blue, and you got the white star, and I'm going, It doesn't jump out at me at all.

FERGUSON: Brad Kanig (ph) is a retired social studies teacher from Hector, Minnesota. He says he'll stick with the previous state flag and wishes he could have had a say in it. GOP representative Bjorn Olson served on the redesign commission and agreed that the public should have had a chance to approve it before it took flight.

BJORN OLSON: Just ask the Minnesotans, do you like the flag? Do you think it represents you appropriately? And if not, let's go back to the drawing board.

FERGUSON: Beginning in the 1960s, civil rights activists raised concerns about the seal that depicted a farmer working the land while a Native American man rode off into the distance.

BILL CONVERY: For the artists who created the seal, this is intended to be an allegory of oncoming progress in civilization and the removal of Native people from the landscape.

FERGUSON: Bill Convery is the director of research at the Minnesota Historical Society.

CONVERY: That debate has been going on since at least the civil rights era, at least 1968, and up to and through today.

FERGUSON: The new flag has a dark blue, K-shaped figure to the left that's meant to mimic Minnesota. There's a white, eight-point star within the shape. To the right, light blue fills the remainder, and the new seal skips people together in favor of Minnesota's state bird, the common loon, preening on a lake.

STEVE SIMON: The old seal will always have a place in our history. We're not looking to air brush that out.

FERGUSON: Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon served on the commission and is by law, the official keeper of the seal.

SIMON: But I think this is a real useful and positive pivot point to a set of emblems and depictions and symbols that will really represent all of us.

FERGUSON: The old flag and seal will be preserved in the Minnesota Historical Society.

In a sandy clearing near Israel’s border with Gaza, soldiers, civilians and tourists wandered silently through a dense thicket of poles. Affixed to the poles were portraits of the hundreds of people who came there to dance late one night last October and never made it home.

As Israelis observed Memorial Day, the country’s annual commemoration for fallen soldiers and victims of terrorist attacks, many were drawn to the site of the Tribe of Nova music festival , a rave dedicated to peace and love that was interrupted around sunrise on Oct. 7 by a barrage of rockets from Gaza, signaling the start of the Hamas-led cross-border assault.

In the horror that followed, at least 360 festivalgoers were slain — nearly a third of the roughly 1,200 people killed in southern Israel that day, according to the Israeli authorities. Gunmen who surged across the border surrounded the Nova site , ambushed people as they tried to escape in their cars and hunted them down in bomb shelters along the road or as they fled across furrowed fields.

Observing Israel’s first national day of mourning after the deadliest day in the 76-year history of the state, and with the country still at war in Gaza, many people came to the Nova memorial site beginning on Sunday to remember the dead and those festivalgoers who were taken hostage to Gaza and are still being held there.

On Sunday, a solemn hush was broken at times by Israeli flags snapping in the wind, and by the sharp cracks of artillery fire from Israeli troop positions nearby.

“The earth is crying out,” said Eliran Shuraki, 39, a resident of central Israel who had come to the Nova site for the first time on Sunday with a friend. “Our hearts are broken,” he added.

They had first visited Be’eri , one of the border communities worst affected on Oct. 7, and where one of Mr. Shuraki’s colleagues lost three generations of relatives, he said. Mr. Shuraki’s brother lost a brother-in-law, a police officer, at the Nova festival, he said.

Nicole and Guy Peretz, a couple in their early 30s, had come from Ashkelon up the coast. Both are former police officers, and several of their former colleagues were killed at the site, they said.

“Until you come here yourself and see the incomprehensible number of people with your own eyes, you cannot absorb it,” Ms. Peretz said.

More makeshift memorials dot the roadsides, orchards and meadows for miles around, made up of portraits and piles of stones, handwritten notes and candles, and wreaths that have withered under the beating sun.

In a field nearby, hundreds of incinerated cars gathered from the roadsides after the Oct. 7 attack are piled up in a graveyard of metal.

Even the bomb shelters where so many sought protection that day, only to be killed as they huddled inside, have turned into shrines. Their charred and blood-spattered interiors have been whitewashed. The stench has gone. Their walls are now covered with graffiti: searing messages, photographs and prayers memorializing those who were there but are no longer.

President Biden’s national security adviser said that while the United States was committed to Israel’s defense, it had still failed to provide the White House  with a plan for moving nearly a million Gazans safely out of Rafah before any invasion of the city.

Israelis gathered  across the country for the first national day of mourning since the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attacks, with protesters disrupting several ceremonies  as they demanded that government ministers do more to secure the release of hostages.

The United Nations said that a staff member was killed  when one of its convoys came under fire in Rafah. It was the first time an international U.N. staff member has been killed in Gaza since the conflict began in October.
