The railways of India are great engineering works. The constructors were confronted with enormous physical difficulties. Broad rivers had to be spanned and the mighty mountain wall of the Ghats had to be surmounted by the railroad before Mumbai could be brought into railway communication with Gujarat, Kolkata, and Chennai. Still greater are the natural obstacles that have been overcome in the construction of the military railways on the north-western frontier, for the protection of the country against foreign aggression.

No doubt it is a good policy to defend India by building railways, for strategic purposes. It is less expensive to add to our railway system than to increase the number of the army. A country with good railway communication has a great advantage from a military point of view. When a threatened frontier has no railways, all the practicable passes have to be defended by strong forces, as it cannot be known beforehand where the enemy will deliver his attack. But if the defenders have the command of railway leading to those passes, it is enough to assemble a strong army at some central point, from which troops can be rapidly conveyed in trains to the part of the frontier towards which the enemy is reported to be directing his march. Thus by the help of railways, an army of fifty thousand men may do the work that would otherwise require twice or thrice as large an army,

Also, the railways built for military purposes are not thereby debarred from being useful in times of peace, so that, even if there should be no war, the money spent upon them is far from being wasted. The railways, which would be a defense in war, are trade routes in peace, and so perform their more natural function.

Now the total length of Indian Railways is about 65,000 kilometers long railway track of which almost 15,000 kilometers are electric lines.

About 12,000 trains go from one place to another every day Railway is like a lifeline to the people of India. The importance of Railway is known by the fact that every year just before the common budget of the Government of India a separate Railway budget is present in the parliament by the Railway Minister. The railway is regularly working for giving the good facilities of their Passengers. The government of India established a separate Paramilitary Force R.P.F. (Railway Protection Force). The main work of R.P.F. is to protect the property and passengers of the Railway.

The jawans of R.P.E are always traveled with express trains and mails. Railway has its different telephone department which is totally different from the Department of Telecom, Government of India. Railway has its separate audit department which audits all accounts of Indian Railways. This audit department of Railways is totally different from CAG (Controller and Auditor General of India). Railway provides Residence and Medical Aid to their employees. We easily see a residential colony and a dispensary near every Railway Station. There are almost 7,500 small and big Railway Stations in India. The railway is also helping the Indian people in their trade almost 30-40% of goods are carried by Railway in different parts of the country.

The railway also plays an important role during any national calamity and any accidents. Railway provides the food, medicines, doctors and other help in a very short time and very rapidly take the affected people towards the secure places at the time of any natural calamity. We saw that in floods, earthquakes, ocean storm the Railway provide full support to the people as much help as possible. The Railway has the facility for all segments of society. For the people of the economically weaker segment, there is a general class, above it, there is a second class in which people got the sleeping facility by reservation. Above them, there is first class. It is very costly because the seats of first-class are very big and comfortable and you can close your chamber and be free from any disturbance in the compartment.

The topmost facility provides by Indian Railways in Air Condition Compartments. In this compartment, the Railway provides a sleeping facility with a full bed to the passengers. The Shatabdi Express and Rajdhani Express are running on very big routes, which passengers travel in those trains the Railway provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner to the passengers. For the last five years, Indian Railways have run a separate luxury train, “Palace on Wheels” in Rajasthan with the support of the Ministry of Tourism Government of Rajasthan. This train has a facility equal to a five-star hotel by this train we can enjoy all places of historical and tourism importance of Rajasthan. So the facility is available for the people of every class. The railway is an essential part of the life of every Indian.

India's love affair with the railways began in the summer of 1853.The British had brought the railways into India for their own benefit; and no one could have imagined that a transportation system would unite the states and bring them together to form a nation. They made railways an integral ingredient of the country's social fabric.

The social impact of the railways emerged from the very beginning.  The railways made India mobile and opened up new vistas and opportunities for its people. It brought in new expertise and trades, new technology and above all, it gave the people a sense of freedom.

An important train that had a huge effect on the society in Mumbai and its neighboring city was the Deccan Queen. Way back in 1928, the Great Indian Peninsula Railway started the Deccan Queen as an inter-city train between Bombay (now Mumbai) and Poona (now Pune). This is perhaps the most iconic train to be run by the Indian Railways. It continues till today, 87 years later.

The Deccan Queen is not a train but an institution. Generations of people from Pune have used it to travel to Mumbai to work and return in the evening. Owing to the amount of time people spend in the train, friendships are forged, marriages are arranged and business deals sealed during the journey. Infact, such trains are more like social networks!

Another significant and vital social impact of the Indian Railways is witnessed in the hill railways.The most famous is the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, which winds up from Siliguri at the foot of the Himalayas to Darjeeling. Even 30 years ago, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was the predominant form of transport in the Darjeeling hills. More than 3 trains used to operate out of New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling and the same number back and at least two trains operated out of Kurseong towards Darjeeling.

The Kurseong station, of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), is the headquarters of the DHR. The station also houses a museum with original artifacts and exhibits of the DHR.

For the school children around Kurseong, this small train was a trusted friend that took them to the doorstep of their schools. The amazing steam locomotive made its way through the market of Kurseong. Though the first hill railway in India to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it now runs only as a tourist railway with scaled down operations.

Apart from influencing society in general, the Indian Railways brought in another social stratum into the country – the Railway Society. In general, a society is divided into two parts, namely, civil and defence. In India, there is this third strata. Railways have their own housing, clubs, institutes, cinema halls, etc; even their own hospitals. The British built several railway towns in India based on railway towns in England. Many of these towns thrive to this day.

The introduction of railways have changed India in unprecedented ways. Way back on 16th April 1853, when three steam locomotives - Sahib, Sultan and Sindh hauled a 14 coach train from Bori Bunder station, Bombay to Thane, they ushered in the rail era in India, changing the country and its people forever. And even a century and a half later, the railways continue to be a strong unifying force in India.

Indian Railways Essay: Indian Railways is one of the largest railway networks operated by the Government of India. Railways was first introduced in India in 1853. For a country so reliant on its trains, Indian Railways Vision 2020 envisages introduction of bullet trains. It will be a massive addition to its route network, with segregation of passenger and freight services into separate double-line corridors, raising the speeds of passenger trains from the current 130 kmph to 160-200 kmph on some routes, zero accidents and equipment failures and setting up of high-speed passenger corridors.

However, this vision would remain a difficult one to achieve, looking at the past and current situation of the railways. Inspite of being the largest and the busiest network, Indian Railways was never a sector to give good returns to the economy, (barring the time of Lalu Prasad Yadav). It faces a lot of problems, sometimes proving even a burden to the Indian Government. The age-old and crumbling infrastructure, low fares, lack of maintenance, mismanagement, lack of quality service deliverance etc are all the major issues with the railways. A sharp decline in the earnings and serious escalation in expenditure has posed even more problems for Indian Railways. Additionally, the ever increasing prices of fuel, coal, the number of accidents, cost of maintenance etc further increases the problems.

A significant change in the Indian Railways came after the year 2004. The 156 years old Indian Railways was regarded as a hopeless, loss making organisation, with too little revenue, too many problems. Steps were taken to increase the demand rather than the price. A team of experts proposed and applied some simple techniques effectively on a per train basis. Subsequently, fares were increased in line with the demand, giving the railways the much needed cash flow to improve its services. Thus with these efforts, Indian Railways was able to book profits. After 2010, the railways went back into problematic phase. The funds started shrinking, therefore improvement in passenger amenities could not be carried out.

However, the recently elected government has again brought in a ray of hope for the good days for ‘Indian Railways’. Surprisingly, Indian train fares are among the cheapest in the world. With such fares, Railways paced its steps well with the technological advancement. The e-ticketing for making reservations and mobile app system to track train schedule are some major breakthroughs.

The history of rail transport in India began in the mid-nineteenth century. In 1849, there was not a single kilometre of railway line in India. A British engineer, Robert Maitland Brereton, was responsible for the expansion of the railways from 1857 onwards. The Allahabad-Jubbulpore branch line of the East Indian Railway had been opened in June 1867. Brereton was responsible for linking this with the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, resulting in a combined network of 6,400 km (4,000 mi). Hence it became possible to travel directly from Mumbai to Calcutta. This route was officially opened on 7 March 1870 and it was part of the inspiration for French writer Jules Verne's book Around the World in Eighty Days. At the opening ceremony, the Viceroy Lord Mayo concluded that “it was thought desirable that, if possible, at the earliest possible moment, the whole country should be covered with a network of lines in a uniform system”. Railways are significant to the development of Indian economy before World War I. This paper reviews the economic performance of railways in Colonial India. The paper describes the organization and development of the network and the productivity factor for railways before and after Indian independence. The paper highlights two key points – first, the railways influenced the Indian government and gradually the role of government increased with nationalization of railway system in India. Mumbai, is a product of colonialization. It was not invaded, but was formed by the Britishers. Before the British rule, it was simply and archipelago of seven islands that was first used for fishing by the Koli fishing community. Later the islands were ruled by the Portuguese for about a century before it was handed over to the British in the form of dowry to King Charles V. It is a city that was formed and reformed through constant reclamations and juxtapositions of political events and trade motives that have shaped the metropolis to what it is today. It is a manifestation of reclamation and structuring through colonial interventions which has resulted in a palimpsestic space today. The British Colonial rule has been largely held responsible, also lauded by some for shaping the infrastructure of a then rigid and traditional India. The railway network of India, which is one of the largest network in the world today, covers about 1, 15,000 kilometers, connecting 7000 stations and employing over one million people in the country, is a colonial gift. The foundation of which was laid in 1848, by the then Governor general Lord Dalhousie 1 .The expansion of railway network by him in the country heralded of the upcoming socio- economic developments that took place in the decades that followed. Though Mumbai, or Bombay 2 as it was known back then was found as a harbor city, and was used by the Koli fishermen’s , the Portuguese and the Britishers as a port city alike, the actual structuring of the city happened with the construction of the Bombay-Thane railway line, the first rail network of colonial India. This paper aims to discuss the formation of the Indian railway network under the British colonial rule, and its huge role in transforming the urban development in India, specifically in the case of Mumbai. It brings light upon how the geographical factors coupled with the colonial exigencies, made railways as one of the most important structuring agents of the development of the city later on. The most important means of transportation in a country are roads, railways, airways, and waterways. India has completely revolutionized its transportation system, both external and internal.

Rail Transport

Railways are the most important means of transportation in India. The improvement in railway communications in recent times has played a most important part in the internal development of the country. They have brought the different parts of the country closer.

The advent of the railway has been of special advantage to the peasantry. Social and political influences from railway construction have been no less.

Advantages of Railways

  • Travelling has become cheaper;
  • Defense of the country is less difficult.
  • Greater peace and order is maintained in the country, and
  • The spirit of nationalism has very greatly developed.

Road Transport

India has a vast network of roads, both metalled and unmetalled. However, this means of transport and communication are still inadequate for our needs. The vehicles that are mainly used on village roads are motorbuses, trucks, and bullock carts.

Before the advent of railways, roads were the only means of communication for the exportation of surplus produce. With the extension of the railway system, it has become more and more necessary to construct roads to feed the railways.

At present, the economic loss caused by the inaccessibility of many agricultural districts in the rainy season is very great. In sandy, hilly, and forest-covered tracts and in other parts of the country, where railways have not penetrated, road transport still holds an important share of long-distance traffic.

The opening of railways has created a demand for road-construction, which must be met by the local and provincial bodies. The question of developing the roads is also of vital importance. We cannot expect any significant progress in our rural economy unless there are good road connections between villages and towns.

Water transport is the oldest and cheapest form of transport. It is one of the most important external and internal means of transport in all the civilized countries of the world. It is useful for the carriage of bulky and heavy goods.

In India, we have many great river systems. However, they are unevenly distributed, some of them are fully utilized for irrigation purposes, and some others are naturally unfit for navigation.

In some parts of India, however, waterways are still extensively used for navigation purposes.

In India, more navigable rivers and canals should be made. And, a systematic policy for the development of the inland water transport should be pursued.

The question of shipping has also great importance in a country like India with a large coastline.

Air Transport System

Proper attention must also be given at the same time to air transport as another means of national and international communication. India possesses some natural advantages in this respect and they have to be fully exploited for development of airways.

The Government is taking a keen interest in the expansion of civil aviation not only for its importance as a means of transport but also because of its strategic value in the matter of national defense. There are also a large number of aerodromes in the country.

An analytic study of the above facts justifies the conclusion that the transport system of India is making good progress. The Government is providing all reasonable facilities for the development of the country’s transport. It is for the people to take advantage of the facilities offered and to step up the country’s progress in the way we desire. Millions of tons of raw materials and finished goods have to be transported over long distances and in the absence of transport facilities there will be bottlenecks in the transport of goods leading to undesirable consequences.

A typical day at the railway station is full of exciting activities and sights. You will find the stations crowded with autos, taxis, cars, buses, rickshaws, and more. Similarly, there is a lot of commotion there.

People are present in large crowds there. Some have come to drop off someone while others are waiting for passengers to arrive. The coolies and porters keep eyeing you to carry your luggage for you so they can earn well.

Another interesting sight and sound are that of people quarrelling and bargaining. One of the most relaxing sights is that of the brick and mortar shops selling books and newspapers . You will see people peacefully reading them in a corner.

There are also food stalls, canteens, and street vendors that sell delicious food items and snacks to passengers. They shout out to attract people and sell their items. There are vendors who roam around with their items to sell them.

The waiting rooms, ticketing booths and even restrooms are often crowded at the railway station too. The people sit on the cemented benches or their own suitcases while they wait for the train to arrive.

People sleeping on bed sheets or mats on the floor is not a rare sight. Not just passengers but people who are homeless or poor also sleep at the railway station. As a result, a lot of addicts lurk on empty tracks or isolated corners.

Main Highlight of a Railway Station

The main highlight has to be when the train is arriving at the railway station. You will see people getting excited and waiting impatiently to board the train. They stand at the platform while waiting for the train to arrive.

On the other hand, the ones who have to deboard the train are eagerly standing at the gates of the train to get down quickly. There is a lot of commotion at this time as the ones who have to board and others who have to deboard, both do it at the same time.

Indian Railways   (IR)  is  India 's national railway system operated by the  Ministry of Railways . It manages the  fourth-largest railway network in the world  by size, with 121,407 kilometres (75,439 mi) of total track over a 67,368-kilometre (41,861 mi) route  Forty nine percent of the routes are electrified with  25 KV AC  electric traction while thirty three percent of them are double or multi-tracked. [3] [4]

IR runs more than 13,000 passenger trains daily, on both  long-distance  and  suburban routes , from 7,349 stations across India. The trains have a five-digit numbering system. Mail or express trains, the most common types, run at an average speed of 50.6 kilometres per hour (31.4 mph) . In the freight segment, IR runs more than 9,200 trains daily. The average speed of freight trains is around 24 kilometres per hour (15 mph).

In the year ending March 2018, IR is projected to carry 8.26 billion passengers and transport 1.16 billion tons of freight.  In the fiscal year 2017-18, IR is projected to have earnings of â?¹1.874 trillion (US$29 billion), consisting of â?¹1.175 trillion (US$18 billion) in freight revenue and â?¹501.25 billion(US$7.7 billion) in passenger revenue, with an  operating ratio  of 96.0 percent.

The first railway proposals for India were made in  Madras  in 1832. [  The country's first train,  Red Hill Railway  (built by  Arthur Cotton  to transport granite for road-building), ran from  Red Hills  to the  Chintadripet  bridge in Madras in 1837. India's first passenger train, hauled by three steam locomotives ( Sahib ,  Sindh  and  Sultan ), ran for 34 kilometres (21 mi) with 400 people in 14 carriages on  1,676 mm  (5 ft 6 in)  broad gauge  track between  Bori Bunder  ( Mumbai ) and  Thane  on 16 April 1853.  The Dapoorie viaduct, India's first  railway bridge , was built over the  Ulhas River  when the Mumbai-Thane line was extended to  Kalyan  in May 1854. Eastern India's first passenger train ran 24 miles (39 km) from  Howrah , near  Kolkata , to  Hoogly  on 15 August 1854. [1]  The first passenger train in  South India  ran 60 miles (97 km) from  Royapuram - Veyasarapady ( Madras ) to Wallajah Road ( Arcot ) on 1 July 1856.

On 24 February 1873, a  horse-drawn  3.8-kilometre (2.4 mi)  tram  opened in Calcutta between  Sealdah  and Armenian Ghat Street. In 1897, lighting in passenger coaches was introduced by many railway companies. On 3 February 1925, the first electric passenger train in India ran between  Victoria Terminus  and  Kurla .

The organisation of Indian railways into regional zones began in 1951, [14]  when the  Southern  (14 April 1951),  Central  (5 November 1951) and  Western  (5 November 1951) zones were created. Fans and lights were mandated for all compartments in all passenger classes in 1951, and sleeping accommodations were introduced in coaches. In 1956, the first fully air-conditioned train was introduced between Howrah and Delhi. Ten years later, the first containerized freight service began between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. In 1986, computerized ticketing and reservations were introduced in New Delhi.

In 1988, the first  Shatabdi Express  was introduced between New Delhi and Jhansi; it was later extended to  Bhopal . Two years later, the first self-printing ticket machine (SPTM) was introduced in New Delhi. In 1993, air-conditioned three-tier coaches and a sleeper class (separate from second class) were introduced on IR. The CONCERT system of computerized reservations was deployed in New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai in September 1996. In 1998, coupon validating machines (CVMs) were introduced at Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. The nationwide Concierge system began operation on 18 April 1999. In February 2000, the Indian Railways website went online. On 3 August 2002, IR began online train reservations and ticketing. [20]  Indian Railways announced on 31 March 2017 that the country's entire rail network would be electrified by 2022.

. IR is divided into 17 zones, headed by general managers who report to the Railway Board. The zones are further subdivided into 68 operating  divisions , headed by divisional railway managers (DRM). [24]  The divisional officers of the engineering, mechanical, electrical, signal and telecommunication, stores, accounts, personnel, operating, commercial, security and safety branches report to their respective DRMs and are tasked with the operation and maintenance of assets. Station masters control individual stations and train movements through their stations' territory. In addition, there are a number of Production Units, Training Establishments, Public Sector Enterprises and other Offices working under the control of Railway Board.

Goods wagons

As of March 2017, IR fleet consisted of 277,987  goods wagons . They carried 1,110 million tonnes of freight in Fiscal Year 2016-17.  Wagon types used by IR  include BCACBM, BCCN, BCNA, BCNHL, BOBRN, BOBYN, BOXN (BOXN-HL, BOXN-HS, BOXN-HL, BOXN-CR, BOXN-LW, BOXN-AL, BOXN-EL), BRH, BTPGLN, BTPN and VVN.

IR’s bulk requirement of wagons is met by wagon manufacturing units both in public and private sectors as well as other Public Sector Units under the administrative control of Ministry of Railways.

Passenger coaches

On long distance routes and also on some shorter routes, IR uses 2 primary types of coach design types.  ICF coaches , in production from 1955 until Jan 2018, ]  constitute the bulk of the current stock. These coaches, considered to be having inadequate safety features, are slowly being phased out. As of September 2017, around 40,000 coaches are still in operation. The older coaches are being replaced with  LHB coaches . Introduced in mid '90s, these coaches are lighter, safer and are capable of speeds up to 160 kilometres per hour (99 mph).

IR has announced that two new self-propelled train set designs will be introduced starting from mid 2018. These two train types, termed as Train-18 and Train-20, are expected to replace locomotive-hauled trains on long distance routes.

On regional short distance routes, IR runs  Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit (MEMU)  or  Diesel Electrical Multiple Unit (DEMU) trains, depending on the traction available. These train sets are self-propelled with capability for faster acceleration or deceleration and are expected to reduce congestion on dense routes. Passenger locomotive-hauled trains, having frequent stops are slowly being replaced with train sets across India.

On suburban commuter routes around the large urban centers, IR runs trains with  Electric Multiple Unit (EMU)  coaches. As of March 2017, about 9100 coaches are in operation.

Manufacturing

Indian Railways is a  vertically-integrated  organization that produces majority of its rolling stock at in-house production units, with a few recent exceptions.

The  Chittaranjan Locomotive Works  in  Chittaranjan  manufactures electric locomotives, and the  Diesel Locomotive Works  in  Varanasi  makes Diesel and Electric locomotives. The  Diesel-Loco Modernisation Works  in  Patiala upgrades the WDM-2 locomotive from 2,600 to 3,100 hp. Some electric locomotives have been supplied by  Bharat Heavy Electricals , and locomotive components are manufactured in other plants around the country. Coaches are produced at  Integral Coach Factory ,  Rail Coach Factory  and  Modern Coach Factory  located in different parts of the country. The  Rail Wheel Factory  at  Yelahanka ,  Bangalore  and the  Rail Wheel Plant, Bela  in  Chhapra , Bihar manufactures wheels and axles.The repair and maintenance of this vast fleet of rolling stock is carried out at 44 loco sheds, 212 carriage & wagon repair units and 45 periodic overhaul workshops located across various zones of IR. In November 2015, IR awarded USD 2.6bn locomotive supply and maintenance contract to  General Electric . The contract stipulates that GE will import 40 locomotives and will produce another 960 over a period of 11 years in a new  Diesel Locomotive Factory at Marhowra  in  Bihar . On the same day, another USD 3bn contract has been awarded to  Alstom SA  to manufacture 800 high power electric locomotives (12000 HP) over 11 yeas in a new  Electric Locomotive Factory at Madhepura .

A railway station is a facility on a railway track or line where trains stop to load and unload passengers or freight or both. Railway stations can be above ground, underground or elevated. The world’s oldest railway station is The Mount on the Oyestermouth Railway in Wales, United Kingdom. It first began its services in the year 1807. At that time, the trains were pulled by animals like horses and were not complete locomotives.

The Indian Railways is the fourth largest railways network in the world and is run by the government. It is one of the world’s busiest railway network and is humongous in its scale, size and operations. It is also one of the world’s cheapest long-distance transportation mechanism. India’s first train ran in Madras in the year 1837, and the Indian Railways came into existence in April, in the year 1853. The Indian railway’s transport around 8.1 billion people per year, which is more than the entire population of the world.

A Typical Day at the Railway Station

Let us now describe what a typical day at the railway station looks like. As soon as we reach the premises of the train station, we find it to be overly crowded with taxis, buses, autos, cars and rickshaws. Some of them have people who are to be dropped at the station, while many others are seen waiting for passengers to hop in and reach their destinations. Coolies or porters eye you from the time your vehicle crosses the barrier and come running to it to take your luggage.

Noises of quarrelling and bargaining can be continuously heard with and around them. There are numerous brick and mortar shops of books, newspapers , food items, etc. and several canteens can also be found. Street vendors or hawkers are also present on various spots who speak loudly or even shout to gain the attention of the local public. They keep roaming from one place to the other, along with the items that they are selling. There are various facilities available on the railway station for the passengers, including waiting rooms as well as ticketing booths and restrooms.

Many can be seen waiting at the platform, sitting on cemented benches, or even on their own suitcases. Some even spread a bed sheet or a mat on the floor and rest there while waiting for their train. Railway stations also serve as a sleeping place for many poor people. A lot of times, addicts can also be found lurking in shady areas like train station bridges, empty tracks and isolated corners. The main highlight of a railway station is when a train approaches it.

People suddenly get over-excited. The ones who have to board, stand at the platform waiting, while at the same time, those who have to deboard are eager to get down in haste. None of them wants the other one to pass first, and thus, a scene of utter chaos and madness takes place. People boarding are in a rush to get to their seats, while those who have just stepped down the train want to make it to the exit as soon as possible.

For a country so reliant on its trains, Indian Railways Vision 2020 envisages introduction of bullet trains. It will be a massive addition to its route network, with segregation of passenger and freight services into separate double-line corridors, raising the speeds of passenger trains from the current 130 kmph to 160-200 kmph on some routes, zero accidents and equipment failures and setting up of high-speed passenger corridors.

However, this vision would remain a difficult one to achieve, looking at the past and current situation of the railways. Inspite of being the largest and the busiest network, Indian Railways was never a sector to give good returns to the economy, (barring the time of Lalu Prasad Yadav). It faces a lot of problems, sometimes proving even a burden to the Indian Government. The age-old and crumbling infrastructure, low fares, lack of maintenance, mismanagement, lack of quality service deliverance etc are all the major issues with the railways. A sharp decline in the earnings and serious escalation in expenditure has posed even more problems for Indian Railways. Additionally, the ever increasing prices of fuel, coal, the number of accidents, cost of maintenance etc further increases the problems.

A significant change in the Indian Railways came after the year 2004. The 156 years old Indian Railways was regarded as a hopeless, loss making organisation, with too little revenue, too many problems. Steps were taken to increase the demand rather than the price. A team of experts proposed and applied some simple techniques effectively on a per train basis. Subsequently, fares were increased in line with the demand, giving the railways the much needed cash flow to improve its services. Thus with these efforts, Indian Railways was able to book profits. After 2010, the railways went back into problematic phase. The funds started shrinking, therefore improvement in passenger amenities could not be carried out.

However, the recently elected government has again brought in a ray of hope for the good days for ‘Indian Railways’. Surprisingly, Indian train fares are among the cheapest in the world. With such fares, Railways paced its steps well with the technological advancement. The e-ticketing for making reservations and mobile app system to track train schedule are some major breakthroughs.

A Journey by Train Essay

A train is not just a transport vehicle. It connects people; it provides access to jobs, communities and goods. It delivers vital social services. Trains are the backbone of the transportation system, which help in creating a sustainable economy. We have often read books and magazines that mention the beautiful experience of train journeys. By reading them, our heart fills with adventure, thrill and happiness.

My First Experience of Train Journey

A journey by train always excites me. It is fun to travel by train. I have been travelling by train since my childhood. The first time I experienced the train journey was when I was studying in Class 6. During my summer vacation, my parents planned to visit Nainital. My father had already booked the train tickets for AC3 Class two months before.

We were staying in Lucknow, and from there, our train journey began. We reached Lucknow Charbagh Station one hour before the train departure time. Lucknow station was 7-8 km far away from our home. So, my father booked a taxi, and we reached Lucknow station. After reaching the station, my father checked for the train timing and platform number on which the train had to arrive. The train was on time, and we had to go to platform number 5. We did not have much luggage, so we did not take coolies. My father took 2 suitcases, and my mother took one bag. Before going to platform number 5, we purchased some chips, water bottles and biscuits.

The station was crowded with people. There were tea stalls, food counters, coolies and many other passengers like us waiting for their train. I could hear a lot of noise in the station, which was due to train announcements, coolies and tea sellers. Hearing the noise and looking at the trains as 1 hour passed, I didn’t get to know. Now, it was time for our train to arrive. We comfortably entered the train and reached our seats. My seat was in the lower berth, so I was happy that I could see all the views from my window seat.

The train gave a hooter sound, and then it started. I was so excited and filled with curiosity and enthusiasm. As the train has taken up speed, I feel as if trees and homes are moving along with us. I asked my mother, “Is it really happening?” Then, my mother replied, “Trees and homes are not moving. As we are sitting in the train and the train is moving at a fast speed, that is why things around us seem to be moving along with us. In reality, we are moving, and other things are static in their respective places.” Then, I understood the concept. For some time, I was peacefully enjoying the scene from my window.

On the train, my experience was very joyful. In our front seat, there was also one family. We played the ludo game, name the places and antakshari. In between the games, we also had snacks and lunch. The train had stopped at the major station, and people were getting down and sitting up on the train. As the train stops at any station, many of the food sellers enter the train to sell their items and get down when the train starts running. This process repeats at every station where the train stops.

Finally, after 10 hours of travelling, it was time for the Kathgodam station to arrive, where we had to get down. Before the Kathgodam station, I could see the mountains and greenery from the window seat. At that time, I got to know that we had come to Hill station to enjoy our summer vacation. We got down in Kathgodam station, and from there, we booked a taxi for Nainital. After 2 hours of road journey, we reached Nainital.

Nainital is such a beautiful place. It is surrounded by mountains all around. From the mountains, a lake called “Nani Lake” was flowing, which increased the beauty of Nainital. The temperature of the Nainital was so pleasant that we felt relieved from summer and heat. We did many activities like boat riding and mountain climbing. We have visited many sites and also done a lot of shopping. After spending 3 days in Nainital, we again took a train from Kathgodam station to Lucknow and came back home. The experience was awesome for me. I will never forget this enjoyable journey by train.
