This has been a result of the process of globalization. This process has opened up and improved trade across regional and national borders. Not only has globalization enhanced economic interactions across nations but also improved access to information and uplifted the fight for human rights, among other benefits. Recent technological and communication developments along with improved road networks have been the key drivers of globalization. However, critics of globalization say that these benefits have been realized at a very high price: that of surrendering regional and national cultural values, mainly, for Western morals (Kwame, 2007).

Regarding this debate, two key schools of thought emerge. From one angle critics argue that globalization spreads out any and every culture all over the realm, leading to cultural heterogeneity and deeper understanding between diverse groups. This is mainly defined through the global production and distribution of commodities such that people in different parts of the world have access to commodities they would otherwise have never seen. A case in point is the cultural interaction between the United States and Japan. Teens in the U.S interact with the Japanese culture through their comic books, animations and video games, while teens in Japan interact with the American culture through watching TV shows and Hollywood movies produced in the U.S (Kwame, 2007).

On the flip side, critics argue that globalization erodes the regional and national cultural identity through cultural homogeneity. This leads to a cohesive global culture constituting diluted varieties of regional and national cultural nuances. For instance, French pastries, ‘American’ fried chicken, and Japanese sushi can be eaten in almost any part of the world. Restraint chains such as MacDonald’s and Starbucks have influenced traditions and behaviors in different countries. Even though champions of globalization claim that this merely affects consumer goods and media broadcasting, critics contend that it deteriorates customary culture ((Kwame, 2007; Czinkota, 2003).

Culture is a prevalent aspect in business whether it is in marketing, production, or human resource management. It is a key variable in the function of success in new markets (Czinkota, 2003). People’s purchasing decisions are based on a product’s design, style or color that supports their religious beliefs and practices. Empirical evidence shows that the success or failure of a company, especially, in a foreign market is reliant upon the effective managerial exercise of local religious beliefs and practices. Therefore, managers ought to be on familiar terms with their market’s religious differences given that religion influences people’s attitudes. For instance, Asians have a different attitude toward authority and women that differs from Western beliefs and practices. Whereas many parts of the world, including Asia, South America, and Africa, value collectivism very much, Americans are more individualistic. Chinese, Latin Americans and Koreans take time casually even as Americans are more proactive.

Failing to appreciate the religious beliefs and practices of the market will often lead to lots of inadvertent mistakes, such as being socially violent, cultural mix-ups, tarnished interpersonal relations, poor negotiations. As a consequence, the company’s future performance dwindles as profits decline. Lack of religious competence, or religious dogmatism, can easily put at risk millions of dollars through fruitless negotiations, lost purchases or sales, and pitiable customer relationships (Czinkota, 2003).

Cultural Literacy

Culture is a broad system that includes traditions, beliefs, attitudes, values, institutions and social interactions. This system reflects the global crunch facing the human race, and so it is a cultural catastrophe (UNESCO 1997). Dealing with such a cultural diversity calls for an important skill referred to as cultural competence. Chrisman (2007) defines cultural competence as ‘attitudes, practice skills, and system savvy for cross-cultural conditions’. The key force in work involving cultural competence is the people’s flexibility and ability to appropriately consider and treat the general public politely and in a proper way fitting their culture. Cultural literacy takes account of cultural competence plus the capacity to analytically mirror, and if needed institute change in, one’s a specific culture. Cultural literacy also comprises the capacity to examine the actions of central cultures measured against other cultures. This becomes very much useful in business. A case in point is the understanding of the effect of globalization or cross-cultural businesses on indigenous cultures all over the world.

Cultural literacy has been likened to an iceberg, through the iceberg model of culture. This is due to the expanse contextual material one requires to understand the culture. Cultural literacy often involves much more than the information essentially spoken. In other words, to understand the meaning of a cultural term, one has got to have much information that is not revealed by the bare meaning of that term. The clear cultural meaning of the term is like the ‘tip of an iceberg’ meaning that the deeper understanding lies below the casual meaning of the term and it constitutes a person’s own applicable information. It is known that 15 per cent or less of an iceberg can be seen above the water surface, 85 per cent or more of the iceberg is submerged below the water surface. This means that there is quite a different picture depicted shallowly from that which is the actual translation in the literature, giving the imprint that implied information comprises relatively tiny bits and pieces of information, left out by the correspondent due to dismissal or suitability (Hawkes, 2001).

It has been stated earlier that culture is a broad system that among other aspects involves religion. The world is very diverse in terms of culture as well as religion. Each culture embodies a creation in itself and yet it is not closed. Cultures give religious convictions semantics, and religions provide decisive connotation to each culture. Religion is a way of life for numerous cultures saturating every one human action. In other cultures, it characterizes the utmost ambitions of human life, and for others, religion is an institution that claims to convey a meaning of deliverance (Hawkes, 2001).

The paper “The Different Communications ” is an outstanding example of a management assignment. Phone: 23 rd August: the communication was made to remind that the bill for the mobile phone is outstanding and if not paid within the date will have a fine imposed on it. The communication was successful as it helped to fulfill my need and acted as a reminder. Further, the call also ensured that it was complete and all the details like outstanding amount, due date, late fine, and other details were provided. The call was complete and highlighted the important aspect which if ignored could have an impact on my usage.

Radio: 24 th August: The communication was made regarding the areas which are having huge traffic and showed the roads which should be avoided. The communication was successful as it helped to fulfill my requirements by highlighting the different roads which need to be avoided and which need to be used. The communication was further clear and loud regarding the different roads and path which should be avoided. This method acted as one where proper guidance was provided and acting in the correct way was highlighted so those correct decisions can be taken.

Communications that were unsuccessful

Television: 24 th August: The communication was made regarding the sale of women’s garments. The communication was ineffective because in the first instance it didn’t meet my needs and requirements as I was not looking to shop. Secondly, the message was not constructed properly as it didn’t speak about the brands which were available on sale, the different garments which were available, and also didn’t highlight the date when the sale would end.

Phone: 25 th August: The communication was made regarding the mobile bill payment which has already been made. The call was ineffective because it was not required as the payment has been made and I had the required receipt. The call was instead a wastage of time. In addition to it, the call was not constructed properly and required to focus on areas through which a message would have been enough as a source of communication to ensure that the payment was correctly entered.

Reasons for communication not to be successful

The communication process can be improved in the following ways

Firstly, ensuring that the communication which is made is required and is addressed properly so that the person who receives the communication gains from it (Nicholas, 2013)

Secondly, providing complete information is essential as it will serve as a benchmark to evaluate the manner in which different information is passed (Anne & Bochner, 2007). It will also help to understand the important matter which has been spoken and will help to highlight the manner in which changes can make so that proper communication and message is passed

Thirdly, the targeted audience was wrong and it is important to correct the audience (Mehrabian and Susan, 2007). This will help to improve the validity and reliability of the communication and will ensure that the process of communication becomes effective and is directed towards the correct person

Fourthly, the process of communication needs to be improved and changed so that the message is correctly interpreted and passed with the same intention (Imahori & Lanigan, 2012). This will help the listeners to evaluate the message in the correct form and will help to ensure maximum response.

Fifthly, the media which are used needs to be chosen wisely as the usage of a message instead of a phone call for bill paid confirmation would have been more helpful and could have caught the attention of the audience in a better way. This would have multiplied the effectiveness of communication and would have helped to understand the important points and issues.

The process of communication thereby requires working on the smaller and important aspect so that the overall process of communication improves and helps to provide the required dimensions through which effectiveness can be gained in the manner messages are passed.

The paper “Why Did Telefonica Initially Focus on Latin America” is a perfect example of a business assignment. Based on Telefonica’s objectives of rapidly increasing shareholder value, profits and achieving growth, it had to take advantage of location economies. Hence, the company initially focused on Latin America, as it must have perceived FDI to be a means for circumnavigating trade barriers. Indeed, the reasons why Telefonica initially focused on Latin America are perceivable through the lens of the Uppsala Model Theory.

According to the theory, the internalisation of a company across many foreign markets is correlated to psychic distance, where the first entry is to foreign markets that are familiar and closer in regards to the psychic distance of the host country, before making subsequent entries in foreign markets with greater psychic distance. Psychic distance comprises the differences in culture, language and political systems (Falvo & Parshad 2005).

Within the perspective of Uppsala Model Theory, it should be argued that companies tend to gradually increase their activities in international markets through a series of incremental stages, where the succeeding steps are anchored in learning and adapting to foreign markets (Pandian & Sim 2002).

This implies that the firms fast gain experience from the markets, where they have closer cultural ties before expanding to foreign markets. For instance, Telefonica had to first gain experience as a telecoms operator in Latin America, since the region has deep cultural ties with Spain, where it is headquartered.

Strategic competitive advantages

The company’s decision to slowly expand to Europe appeared opportunistic as well as strategic. Europe had initially possessed trade barriers that lowered the chances of successful entries. Essentially, there is a correlation between culture and national competitive advantage, where countries that are likely to impose trade barriers, in terms of competition are bypassed in preference to those that are less competitive (Enu & Attah-Obeng 2010). This argument is based on Dunning’s Eclectic Theory, which hypothesises that a company will always seek to leverage their specific advantages, including marketing, knowledge, skilled personnel, technology and information (Dunning 2001).

In this case, the Latin American markets were growing rapidly. They also experienced an increased high adoption rate and usage of mobile phones and internet connections. Additionally, after the Spanish government privatised Telefonica and deregulated the Spanish telecommunications market, the company’s core objective became increasing shareholder value, profits and achieving growth.

This implies that profit maximisation is a major drive to foreign direct development; through the use of particular advantages the company has (Glesem et al. 1990). It, therefore, had to select a region that would enable it to achieve higher profits. The company selected Latin America over Europe. Latin America had few entry barriers, such as competition and government regulations, while Europe had greater barriers due to more competitors. This implies that imperfect competition within the marketplace is a key incentive for expanding abroad. Besides, European mobile telecommunications operators had agreed they would not invade each other’s markets. However, after the entry of America Movil into Latin America, Telefonica faced a stronger competitor, forcing it to expand to Europe.

Why did Telefonica initially focus on Latin America?  Why was it slower to expand in Europe, even though Spain is a member of the European Union?

While the student hinted at the growth of multinational enterprises, a brief outline detailing why the company expanded and reasons for expansion could have provided a more relevant backdrop. Additionally, the reference to the Socialist Party by Popular Part in the general election of 1996 was irrelevant and out of context. The student’s decision to link the factors for the European Union to the opening of the telecommunications sector was misplaced. Rather, the student should have selected reasons why Telefonica selected to begin operating in Latin America before making headway to Europe. However, reference to high competition in the sector in Europe was justified.

Accordingly, the student should have explored the close cultural ties between Spain and Latin America, as the major drivers that triggered Telefonica to first launch in the region before expanding to Europe. In supporting the argument, a reference to a relevant theory, such as the Uppsala Model Theory could have pointed to the reasons why internationalisation of a company across many foreign markets is correlated to psychic distance (Uhasselt. be 2005). This includes why the initial entry is mostly made in foreign markets that are familiar and closer in regards to the psychic distance of the host country. Afterward, an explanation of what this meant to Telefonica based on the theory could have been appropriate (Gustafsson & Zasada 2011). For instance, the student should have stated that firms get to fast gain experience from the markets where they have closer cultural ties before expanding to foreign markets.

The student should have based his arguments on Dunning’s Eclectic Theory, which proposes that firms tend to use their peculiar advantages such as marketing, knowledge, skilled personnel, technology and information (Rugman 2010). At this stage, the student should have suggested a theory to support his argument (Morgan & Katsikeas 1999). Later, the student should have provided examples from the case study to defend the choice of the theory he selected. However, the student provided examples outside the case study, such as “Telefonica has been able to establish footprints in 24 countries and having an average of 120,000 professionals with consolidated revenues of 24,957 million euros in January-June 2014 and more than 315.7 million customers at June 2014”

Additionally, the reasons the student outlined as the likely motivators for Telefonica to launch first in Latin America before making entries in Europe cannot be justified, as they have not been argued appropriately. For instance, in suggesting political developments, taking policy advantage and the fact that the markets shared a common language, the student should have discussed the concept of psychic distance and the related theory, such as the Uppsala Model Theory.

The length of the working week does not reflect modern lifestyle needs. It should be substantially reduced to give people more leisure time and time with their families. How far do you agree with this statement? Day by day, the life is becoming more complex and very difficult and people work for long time in every day. It is agreed that the number of working day in a weak should be reduced to give workers more free time with their families. Analysing both difficulty and complexity of life nowadays as well as people work hard for long time will show this. Firstly, today, the life is complex and people spend a long time working very hard without a rest time. For instance, people work from the beginning of morning to the end of evening very hard. When they back to their home, they might be tired and stressful. Therefore, people can not find a free time to talk and discuss with their families and spend enjoyable time with them. Thus, this makes it clear why people need for more free time every week. Secondly, as people work hardly for a long time during a working day, they might be stress and their health could be not good. For example, when workers do their job, they will be standing all the time and sometime doing hard without a rest time. Thus, their body could be very tired and in a bad condition and this routine continues every day. From this, it becomes quiet evident that why decreasing the number of working day is important for people health. In summary, people are working very hard for long time. Therefore, their health condition could be bad and they do not spend more time with their families. Thus, it is clear why the idea of increasing the number of working day can not be supported. After analysing this subject, it is predicted that the drawbacks of working a long time without rest more than benefits. Working Part-time while at High School

Some high (secondary) school students work part-time while some do not, instead just focusing on their studies. What are the advantages and disadvantages of part-time jobs for high school students? This can happen because a student may want to put in more hours of work in order to earn more cash. As a result, he will spend more time working and less time focusing on his educational side. Another downside is that with money power in his hands, he could easily fall prey to bad habits like gambling, drugs and smoking. This can lead to destruction of his academics and ultimately destroy his future career. Different homes are different when it comes to their financial state. Hence, low income groups might prefer if their children make a small earning to support themselves. However, high society people may not be in favor that their offspring gets employed as they feel it is below their status and , besides they can fund their teens.

In the modern business world, there is need for business leadership more than we need business managers; because of the complexity of business environment.

The modern business environment is characterized by stiff competition, tough rules of taxation, changing forms of management that is moving away from personnel management and adopting human resource management as a form of managing employees, increasing logistics and costs of operating businesses among other challenges. All these aspects call for a lot of resilience in successful management of businesses.

Thus, this calls stronger leadership which goes well beyond what management can offer. Leadership can be defined as the progressive creativity; the ability to foresee the future basing on the present while at the same time putting in mind the past. It is the major component of vision. In business, effective leadership is defined in terms of the corporate culture. This leadership propels the business to maximize profits which is the major goal of all businesses (Scheer, 2009).

In the world today, there are a number of businesses that have achieved tremendous growth. These businesses have grown from scratch to become among the top leading businesses in the world. Most of the success in these businesses is associated with the leaders of the business. The leaders of those businesses have been argued to poses creativeness and excellent leadership skills that they have development with time (Cohen & Rath, 2007).

One of the leaders who are known to have leadership qualities that have helped the business they lead to grow to greater heights is Steve Jobs; who was the Chief Executive Officer of Apple. Jobs was the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Apple Incorporated which is an information technology firm that deals in the production of computers and other information technology goods and services.

The company is worldly known for the invention of the iPod and iPhone technology products. This paper looks into Steve Jobs and his leadership skills that enabled him to lead Apple Company.

The Apple Company underwent several transformations before it made the success it has attained under the leadership of Jobs. The company was started in 1976 by Jobs. In the year 1974, Jobs started the ‘Revolutionary Macintosh’ of which he ushered to the market. Jobs was later forced to step down by the board of directors of Apple in 1985.

He later went ahead to make NeXt Computer in 1986. In the year 1997, Apple bought NeXt Computers. He was nominated to become the chief executive officer. In the year 2001, the company invented the iPod that entered the market in a revolutionary way. In 2007, apple invented the 3G iPhone which was unique in the market and which gave the company much glory (O’Grady, 2009).

One of the best attributes of a good business leader is vision. Firms are founded by people who have vision. The vision of the organization has to be coupled with creativity for any growth to be realized, and Steve Jobs was a visionary leader. Jobs was well understood for the attitude of perfectionism which he always embraced.

This quality helped him to withstand business pressures; for instance, pressures arising from the adversity of the conditions in the market that needed a quick move. In 2002, the company was constrained in a big way. At this period, Jobs stood with the vision of the company. He always likened the future of the company to the superior inventions that the company had made for instance the iPod.

He involved himself in the Nitti gritty of the goods that the company produced. He had the ability to blend well the micromanagement skills, as well as the vision of the firm. A combination of vision and intelligence enabled the company to manage to come up with products that were of a revolutionary nature in the information technology market.

Notable attributes of visionary leadership are depicted in the personal computer concept, invention of revolutionary consumer information technology products such as the iPod and the iPhone. These products were applauded in the market by technology experts as products that utilized high technology in their manufacture, and that they were much far beyond the technology that was used in the invention of mobile phones.

Another indicator of visionary leadership is the three dimension animated movies. Job came out as a person with a lot of brilliance, and an innovative person who was able to come up with solutions for instance production of computers to aid in transforming the world.

He was a motivated person, through whom other workers got motivated creating a high morale work environment that encouraged performance to rise. Innovation is a key tenet of a good leader. It differentiates between who a leader is and who a follower is. Jobs was indeed a leader (Whitelaw & Wetzig, 2008).

Jobs had a good grasp of excellent skills of communication that leaders in the business world must have if they want their businesses to succeed. He was able to make and deliver keynote speeches that were written in a professional manner apart from being excellently rehearsed. He was well informed of the content of his speeches. The speeches he delivered articulated the information therein in an ecstatic way (Wyckoff, 2007).

Jobs portrayed his credibility skills though he was mostly known as being a secretive person in the sense that he did not seem to be fond of giving many interviews. He was however, known to be a person who held to his words. He delivered the promises he made. Steve was known to be an ‘Authority Obedience Manager’ when apple ousted him in 1985; he was then termed to be an arrogant leader. In 2009 however, when he became sick, he was able to pass his responsibilities for almost a half a year.

The running of the company went on without any constraints. This period led to a conclusion that he had mentorship skills of which he had used to mentor the followers to think, and make decisions in a manner in which he used to do himself. By this can be termed as being an excellent team manger (Caligiuri & Mendenhall, 2005).

Jobs had good relational skills. He did not seem to distance himself from the audience which comprised of customers and team members of the company. He mostly chose to put on simple attire like jeans instead of wearing swift executive attire that would distance him from the organization and its customers. The closeness he had with customers made him have a grasp of the needs of customers (Ireland, Hoskisson & Hitt, 2008).

Jobs inspirational aspect was behind the success he achieved as the leader of Apple. He had a message that is referred to as ‘think different’ and a strong ability of making continuous surprises, and delivering on his vision for the firm (Ireland, Hoskisson & Hitt, 2008). Jobs had a good grasp of what the business he was dealing with entailed.

For a person to be able to lead well, he has to have deeper insights of the products that he dealt in. Jobs had a good master of computer and information technology knowledge which he has combined with creative thinking to make the company to succeed. He had competence in the field, and therefore, he was actively involved in the invention of products by the company (Whitelaw & Wetzig, 2008).

Leadership is important in business management in the modern times. The current business environment is marked with numerous challenges, for instance high competition, rising production costs, tougher regulations from government and other regulators. This therefore, calls for more than just management but leadership. Leadership in business goes beyond management, and is the reason behind the success that has been made by various businesses around the world.

Steve Jobs is one of the leaders in business who have done pretty well in leading their businesses to becoming successful. Jobs who was the Chief executive Officer of Apple Incorporated had a mastery of excellent leadership skills that helped like good relational skills, as well as excellent communication skills combined with personal qualities to make the firm succeed. Many employers now require a writing sample, or job application essay , to accompany all applications or résumés — even if writing is not a significant part of the position. The goal of the job application essay is to ensure that applicants have the right communication skills for the position offered. Sometimes, potential employers will provide a specific topic or series of questions for your essay to respond to. However, you may also be asked to provide an essay with no guidance whatsoever. Outlining Your Essay

Step 1 Read the job listing and essay description carefully.

  • If you don't know much about the company, do a little research on it before you start writing. You might look at their website or do a general internet search with the name of the company to see if any news articles or other reports come up. Go beyond the four corners of the job listing so that you understand who will likely be reading your essay.
  • If there's anything in the job listing or essay requirements that you don't understand, contact the employer and ask about them. Employers are often impressed by applicants who clarify the employer's intent rather than making assumptions.

Step 2 State your theme or thesis statement upfront.

  • For example, if you're applying for a position in sales, you might want to write an essay about your ability to tailor your pitch to specific clients and close the deal. If you have the ability to be more creative, you might tailor your essay to "sell" yourself directly to the employer.

Step 3 Brainstorm 3 or 4 points that support your thesis statement.

  • For each of your points, think of a specific example you can relate briefly that illustrates the point. For example, if you've described yourself as a "team player," you might include an example of how you came in on your day off to complete some of the more monotonous tasks that no one else wanted to do so a project could be completed ahead of schedule.
  • It's a good idea to have more than one example in your outline for each point, even if you only end up using one. That way, if you start writing something and it ends up not working as well as you thought it would, you'll have a back-up handy.
  • Brainstorming can be difficult. If you find yourself churning over the same thoughts, stand up and take a break for a few minutes. Step outside or go for a walk to clear your head, then come back to it.

Step 4 Gather documents and information to fill out your points.

  • For example, if you want to describe how you increased sales in a specific quarter, you would want to state specifically how much you increased sales. Your former employer may have sales figures that you could ask them for. You might also have that information in your records.
  • Wherever possible, use specific numbers and dates rather than making general statements. It's okay to estimate, but make sure your estimate is conservative. Saying you led your sales team to the highest sales in a quarter is impressive — but only if it's true.

Completing Your Rough Draft

Step 1 Start with an introductory paragraph that describes you and your essay.

  • Think of this paragraph as telling the hiring manager what you're going to tell them in the essay. Outline the points you're going to elaborate on in the essay that back up your theme or thesis statement.
  • Sometimes it's best to go back and write your introduction after you've written the body of your essay. That way, you can make sure the introduction provides an outline that matches the body.

Step 2 Organize your essay logically.

  • If the employer listed specifically what should be included in your essay, follow their order, since that's what they'll be looking for when they read the essay.
  • Write in the first person and make yourself the star of any anecdote you include as an example. Use action verbs to focus on what you did rather than focusing on what happened and how you reacted to it. Step 3 Create transitions between each paragraph of your essay.

  • For example, if you're writing about your skills as a team player, you might note that you discuss doing routine work that others found monotonous so they had time to work on other parts of a project. You could use that detail to move on to a section describing how you're detail-oriented.

Step 4 Use your closing to summarize your essay.

  • For example, you might write "My business school education, skills as a team player, and focus on detail make me the best candidate to lead your sales team."

Finalizing Your Essay

Step 1 Proofread your essay for spelling, grammar, and typographical errors.

  • For example, you might start by looking solely at punctuation, then read through again focusing on spelling.
  • If you find that you tend to repeat a particular error, go through your essay looking for that error specifically.
  • If your grammar isn't particularly strong or you're writing in a language other than your native language, have someone else read over your essay as well.

Step 2 Read your essay out loud.

  • If you find that you stumble over a sentence while reading aloud, that's a sign that your writing could be clearer. Work with your text until you have something that you can read aloud with ease.

Step 3 Edit

  • If the prospective employer did not specify a length, try to keep your essay under 2 double-spaced pages. Remember that hiring managers are busy and don't have a lot of time to read a long, rambling essay.
  • Eliminate all unnecessary words or sentences that aren't relevant to the subject of your essay. The majority of your sentences should be short, declarative sentences with action verbs.

Step 5 Print your essay and read through it a final time.

  • It may also help to print your essay in a different font or font size than what you used to type it. This breaks your brain's familiarity with the text, which can make typos and other errors more noticeable. Just remember to change the font back after you print it.

People often dismiss this as a trick question, or assume that the interviewer is only looking to hear how great the company is. Yet it is arguably the most significant question an interviewer can ask you.

It is also extremely difficult to answer well. This article will outline exactly what your interviewer is looking for, typical mistakes candidates make, how to prepare your answer and similar versions of the question.

Why Do You Want to Work in Our Company? – What Is the Interviewer Really Asking?

When you are faced with the question ‘Why do you want to work in our company?’ you may feel overwhelmed. However, your interviewer isn’t going to ask you to recite all of their industry awards from memory. Nor do they want you to feed them empty compliments.

The interview is about you. Your interviewer wants to know:

  • Why you are perfect for the role
  • What motivated you to apply
  • How you will fit into the company’s culture
  • Whether you understand the company’s strategy and commercial goals
  • Whether you are likely to stay at the company for a long time

You need to structure your answer in two parts:

  • Why do you want this particular job?

Now you know how not to answer, it’s time to prepare your best response to ‘Why do you want to work here?’. Here are some tips:

1. Think About Why You Want This Job in Particular

Research the role and figure out why it interests you. Think about how the job description matches your skill set, ambitions and what you genuinely like most about the business.

For example, some of these may apply:

  • The responsibilities of the role align with your personal interests. Ensure you can link what interests you about the job role to specific examples. For example, if you are applying for the role of Editorial Assistant at Love Knitting Magazine, you could mention that you are a prolific knitter and you edited a student magazine at university.
  • Opportunities for progression. For example, internal qualifications, networking opportunities or management training schemes.
  • You want to work in a professional, team-oriented environment which values collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • You love analytical and logical problem-solving.

A short-term career goal might be to gain more experience in customer service. Whereas a long-term goal might be to aspire to a management position. Make sure your career goal is relevant to the job role.

Here are some examples of how you can link your career goals with the company’s objectives:

  • For the role of Product Designer – The company makes a product which has inspired you to enter the industry and your career goal is to design similar products.
  • For the role of Healthcare Assistant – You are passionate about providing exceptional healthcare and you always aspire to improve your level of care. This is also a value prioritised by the company.
  • For the role of Private Client Paralegal – You value developing close professional relationships with clients and your goal is to build a legal career in private client work.

3. Think About Why You Want to Work at This Company in Particular

Make sure you read the company’s website and any news articles you can find. A company’s blog can also be useful, since it will list important projects the company has worked on and focus on topics which are of value to the company.

If you have any connections within your network who have worked with the company, it’s also a good idea to speak with them to find out more about the company from someone who has experienced it first-hand.

Some other ideas to think about when undertaking your research are:

  • Why you admire the company – Is it a front-runner in developing a ground-breaking software? Or is it one of the only companies in the country which specialises in aviation law? Make sure your reasons are specific to demonstrate you have done your research.
  • Has the company undertaken any projects that particularly interest you, and why? – As well as the company’s blog, check whether they have listed any case studies on their website which provide more insight into the work they do.
  • Can you identify the company’s short and long-term objectives? – A short-term objective might be to reward employees who volunteer for the company’s corporate social responsibility programme. A long-term objective might be a target for the number of annual employee hours dedicated to corporate social responsibility.
  • What are the company’s values? – For example, a bank might foster a culture of sustainable lending. Or a healthcare organisation might promote their staff’s caring and attentive approach to their work.

Why Do You Want to Work in Our Company? – Five Typical Mistakes Candidates Make

Before delving into how you answer the ‘Why do you want to work here?’ question, here is some advice on how not to approach it.

Most interviewers will not appreciate a humorous answer. It makes you appear insincere or suggests that you don’t know how to answer the question.

I’m only here for the money.

You look like you could use my help.

2. Ambiguity

The interviewer doesn’t want to hear vague compliments about how their company “looks really cool”. Ambiguous answers will indicate that you haven’t done any research on the organisation or thought about why you want the job at all.

I just think the work looks fun.

3. Not Relating Your Answer to the Job or Company

It is surprising how often candidates forget to mention the job they are applying for altogether.

I liked your website.

You have bean-bag chairs in the break area, which is a nice touch.

4. Being Too Honest

Even if you’re just here for the money, don’t confess this to your interviewer. Never lie, but keep your answer focused on the job role and why you would be a great addition to the company.

I need to pay the rent somehow.

This isn’t my dream job, but it seems tolerable.

5. Saying You Don’t Know

If you cannot come up with a single reason why the company should hire you, they probably won’t.

“Why Do You Want to Work in Our Company” Similar Questions: How They Are Different

There are many variations of the ‘Why do you want to work here?’ question that you may be asked at interview. Here are some examples of similar questions which ask the same thing:

  • “Why do you want this job?”
  • “What are you looking for in your next job?”
  • “Why did you apply for this position?”

However, make sure you listen carefully to the question you are being asked; some will require a different answer than you first expect. Never repeat a pre-prepared response without listening carefully to the question. For example:

“What qualities can you bring to this role?”

This question differs because it focuses less on what you personally think about the role. Instead, talk about your specific achievements and how you can apply your skills to the job.

Example answer:

As well as my ability to manage and administer pension claims, I have a unique background in data management and analysis.

For example, in my previous role, I was part of a project recording and analysing the causes of delayed pension payments. This led to the implementation of improved payment administration policies. I will be looking for opportunities to use my skills within this role.

This answer is good because the candidate has specified a unique skill which will set them apart from the other candidates and backed it up with an example.

“Why should we hire you?”

This question is used to single out the very best of the qualified candidates. We have a whole article about this one question .

The interviewer wants to know:

  • Whether you will do the job better than everybody else.
  • Whether you will fit into the company’s culture.

It differs from the ‘Why do you want to work here?’ question because it is less about your personal interest in the job and more about what you can do for the company.

Come up with at least three reasons you stand out from the crowd. For example:

  • You have experience in this industry;
  • Your past achievements demonstrate a proven track record;
  • You have relevant awards;
  • You have relevant qualifications or further education;
  • Your soft skills (such as communication skills) are especially strong (and proven);
  • You have specific technical skills (such as knowledge of certain programming languages).

I have over 8 years of experience working with clients to deliver successful projects. As part of this, I have developed great relationships with my clients and other team members.

This contributes to my ability to manage teams and get results. Last year I led a team that won an industry award for a national project.

“How are you a good fit for this company?”

This question differs because it focuses on your understanding of the company’s culture and what skills you can contribute.

Ensure you research the company and its values. Think about how your own goals and values coincide. Then answer the question by:

  • Describing your interpretation of the company’s culture.
  • Explaining how you fit into that culture (including specific examples).

Here are some ideas to think about when interpreting the company’s culture:

  • Does the company value collaboration?
  • Does the company value internal progression?
  • Are there any mentoring schemes?
  • What is the company’s attitude to work/life balance?

I love that [company] promotes supportive attitudes in its employees. At my current job, we also have a culture of support, especially when a tight deadline is coming up.

For example, I recently worked two weeks’ overtime to help a colleague compile the civil disclosure for a massive fraud case.

I love how stimulating and exciting that kind of work can be. Therefore, I think I will fit in well within your team where everyone comes together to work to similar tight deadlines.

Final Thoughts

Preparing to answer interview questions can be daunting, but follow the advice in this article and you will arrive at your interview prepared to impress. Remember:

  • Research the company and the position thoroughly.
  • Structure your answer in two parts: first, outline why you want the job. Then outline why you want to work at the company.
  • Be enthusiastic and back up all your reasons for wanting the job with specific examples.

Don't secretly work multiple jobs if you want to advance in your career, overemployed workers say

  • Some people have made as much as $500,000 a year secretly working multiple remote jobs. 
  • But splitting time between roles can make it difficult for some workers to advance in their careers. 
  • However, some job jugglers say the extra work experience provides valuable skill development .

While Robert, a Gen Xer living in Florida, was able to earn roughly $335,000 last year as an overemployed worker, he said the high pay came at a cost.

"There is a certain level you cannot be at to perform well on multiple jobs," Robert said. "It's definitely harder to truly advance."

However, Robert was willing to make that trade and held three jobs simultaneously for half the year, which he said required only about 50 hours of work a week. He said the extra income helped him pay down debt and take several expensive vacations — including a roughly $20,000 cruise.

Over the past year, Business Insider has spoken with several people who've made as much as $500,000 annually working two to three remote jobs simultaneously. They've used the extra income to pay off their mortgages , plan for an early retirement , and take luxurious vacations .

But life is full of tradeoffs, and that's as true as ever for the people secretly working multiple remote jobs .

Business Insider asked four current and former overemployed workers whether their career trajectories stalled when they began working multiple jobs, and if so, whether this bothered them. They spoke on condition that pseudonyms would be used for fear of professional repercussions, but BI has verified their identities and earnings.

A lack of career advancement might be worth it for the extra income

Overemployed people are deploying a different career strategy than traditionally employed workers — one that could make it difficult for them to thrive and advance at any single job.

Career advancement is among the top things Robert had to give up in his pursuit of overemployment, he said. He added that it can also be difficult to line up vacation time — it has to be approved by multiple employers.

But ultimately, Robert said the extra income that job juggling has provided him makes it worthwhile. Even if he could earn a comparable income in a more senior role, he said he might prefer the overemployed lifestyle.

"I could be a senior director making $25,000 to $30,000 a month and really stressing, or I can do two to three jobs and cruise through," he said.

Splitting time between jobs is sometimes unsustainable

Job juggling can come with its pros and cons. While having multiple jobs can be stressful and require long hours , most people have told Business Insider that it's worth it for their higher incomes.

In the same vein, intense competition for remote roles and return-to-office mandates could make overemployment a difficult strategy to sustain over the long term — and working multiple jobs could be a fireable offense if one is ever found out . But for many workers, the extra job security that can come with having multiple jobs outweighs these concerns.

Career advancement — and how much one values it — is another factor many job jugglers are forced to consider.

William, a Texas-based tech worker in his 30s who earned over $500,000 in 2022 secretly working multiple remote roles, also weighed his professional progress.

Working as much as 14 hours a day across his roles meant he didn't have much time to relax, William said. He also found it difficult to dedicate sufficient time to each of his jobs.

"It was definitely a trade-off of short-term financial gains," he said of overemployment. "It did make it harder to put in 100% in either role, which is required to move ahead in your career.

In February 2023, only eight months after he started, William decided to resign from his two corporate jobs and focus on his consulting business.

Overemployment can provide workers with valuable experience

Not every overemployed worker agrees that working multiple jobs is bad for career advancement.

John, a millennial IT professional in California, was on track to earn over $300,000 last year across two remote jobs.

He said the skills he's learned in one job have sometimes helped him become more productive at his other job. He thinks this has made him a more valuable worker and could ultimately help him progress in his career.

"If anything, it makes me more creative in my work because I can look at problems in different ways," he said.

If job juggling helps John land more senior roles — and these roles have greater job responsibilities — it may be difficult for him to continue job juggling. But that might not have to be the case, based on other overemployed workers' experiences.

Justin, an IT engineer in his 50s, earned over $300,000 in 2022 secretly working three full-time, remote IT engineer jobs. By the time he began job juggling, he said he had already advanced considerably in his career and wasn't concerned about his job trajectory.

"I didn't have future advancements I was looking toward," he said. "But I can afford to travel now. So I'm not really giving up relaxation time. So really what have I given up? Nothing."

NEW YORK (AP) — Hiring woes may be easing for small businesses.

The CBIZ Small Business Employment Index reported a seasonally adjusted increase of 0.17% in February as the U.S. economy stays strong despite high interest rates.

Small businesses have a tougher time retaining workers since they often can’t offer higher salaries or other perks like health insurance.

The CBIZ index tracks hiring among thousands of companies with 300 or fewer employees across the U.S.

In this week’s Small Business Monitor, AP correspondent Mae Anderson reports for on jobs and hiring.

“The U.S. economy has shown unexpected strength amid the high interest rate environment,” said Anna Rathbun, chief investment officer of CBIZ. “It’s apparent that small businesses are holding onto that strength for now as they expanded their workforce steadily during February.”

In February, 20% of companies in the index hired more staff while 60% made no change to their headcounts. Meanwhile, 20% cut staff.

Some industries are faring better than others. Industries with hiring gains included administrative and support services; arts, entertainment and recreation; and technology and life sciences. Decreases were observed in accommodation and food services, insurance, and utilities.

On a regional basis, the West, Southeast, and Central regions saw slight increases in hiring, while the Northeast region experienced a slight decline.

The small business trend echoes the broader market. U.S. employers added 275,000 jobs in February, beating expectations, showcasing the U.S. economy’s resilience in the face of high interest rates. February’s job growth marked an increase from a revised gain of 229,000 jobs in January.

Unilever to Cut 7,500 Jobs and Spin Off Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Unit

The consumer goods giant said the moves would make for a “simpler, more focused company” as consumers trade down to cheaper brands amid high inflation.

Unilever, the consumer goods giant, said on Tuesday that it would cut 7,500 jobs and spin off its ice cream unit, which includes Ben & Jerry’s, to reduce costs and simplify its portfolio of brands.

The moves would make for “a simpler, more focused and higher performing Unilever,” Ian Meakins, the London-based company’s chair, said in a statement. The group’s ice cream unit generated 7.9 billion euros ($8.6 billion) in sales last year, or about 13 percent of the group’s total.

The division is home to Ben & Jerry’s, which Unilever acquired in 2000 , along with brands like Cornetto, Magnum, Talenti and Wall’s. The spinoff is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Hein Schumacher, who took over as Unilever’s chief executive in July, announced a plan late last year to “drive growth and unlock potential,” in part by focusing more attention on just 30 of the group’s hundreds of brands.

On Tuesday, he said the job cuts and ice cream spinoff would “accelerate” the plan, saving nearly $870 million in costs over the next three years. The layoffs, of “predominantly office-based roles” around the world, amount to about 6 percent of Unilever’s work force.

In early 2022, Nelson Peltz , one of Wall Street’s most prominent activist investors, began building a stake in Unilever. Mr. Peltz, who is known for pushing companies to simplify their corporate structures, got a seat later that year on Unilever’s board, where he remains.

After the proposed spinoff, Unilever’s remaining units would include health and beauty brands like Dove soap, consumer goods like Surf detergent and food brands including Hellmann’s mayonnaise.

Unilever rival Nestlé shifted many of its European ice cream brands to a joint venture with a private equity firm in 2016 and sold its U.S. brands, including Dreyer’s and Häagen-Dazs, to the venture in 2019.

Unilever has struggled in recent years, with revenue growth propped up by steep price increases as sales volumes have declined. Squeezed by inflation, consumers have been turning instead to cheaper brands in many of Unilever’s biggest categories, most notably less essential products like ice cream.

The ice cream division faced the highest input-cost inflation in Unilever’s portfolio last year, the company said in an earnings report last month. It passed on some of those costs to consumers, prompting them to buy less or switch to cheaper brands, leading to a “disappointing year with declining market share and profitability,” the company said.

“The company has tried accelerated cost-cutting for accelerated growth for at least a decade,” analysts at Bernstein wrote in a research note. “This plan remains ‘we will try harder’ to execute the same plan, or hope over experience,” they added. Unilever’s shares rose about 3 percent on Tuesday, but have been roughly flat over the past year.

Ben & Jerry’s, which has been run by an independent board since its takeover by Unilever, has not always sat comfortably in the portfolio of a staid multinational corporation. The founders of the Vermont-based brand are outspoken on hot-button social and political issues ; in 2021, they said they would end sales in Israeli-occupied territories .

That led some U.S. pension funds to divest from Unilever and prompted a shareholder lawsuit. Ben & Jerry’s sued Unilever in 2022 to stop it from selling distribution rights to a licensee in Israel. Unilever eventually sold the rights to its longstanding local partner there, which continues to sell the ice cream with slightly different branding.

When the container ship Dali struck the base of the Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday morning, it set off a rapid chain of events. The bridge crumpled into the Patapsco River, its twisted metal draped over the ship and its thousands of containers. Eight construction workers and their cars tumbled into the water. Two of the workers are dead; four are still missing and presumed dead. And the whole disaster is now blocking one of the country's busiest ports, the Port of Baltimore.

For many workers at the port, that chain of events means that work has either slowed or stopped completely.

"Quite a few are out of work right now," says Scott Cowan, president of International Longshoremen's Association Local 333 in Baltimore. He represents 2,400 dockworkers and ILA members in the Port of Baltimore.

These are the workers who load and unload ships at the port. They operate cranes. They receive and deliver cargo. They do maintenance and repair work on equipment and containers. They perform clerical work like timekeeping and recording the movement of cargo.

"Some of our maintenance guys and mechanics are still going to work to maintain the equipment in the facility," says Cowan. "But the bulk of our work is the unloading and loading. That's where the labor-intensive jobs are, where we use a lot of people. ... And that's not happening right now."

How long it takes to get the shipping channel cleared will determine how deeply port workers are affected — and the size of the impact to Maryland's economy . Cowan says the closure of the shipping channel is costing $191 million a day in lost economic activity.

The state has set up a dedicated unemployment line for workers affected by the port closure. Through Wednesday, the day after the collapse, fewer than 200 affected workers had made unemployment claims, according to a spokesperson for the Maryland Department of Labor.

And the Maryland Senate president, Sen. Bill Ferguson, said earlier this week that he will sponsor emergency legislation to provide income replacement for workers impacted by the port's closure.

Still, Cowan doesn't think the impact will be a lasting one for Baltimore's longshoremen: "I believe the cargo will rebound here quite strongly and we'll be going into the Christmas season here shortly, bringing goods into this country. So we should be fine."

Smaller waterfront businesses are also affected

It's a seasonal business, and he'd been gearing up to start cruises on April 1. Now he won't open until May. So the sailboat remains anchored, a blue tarp pulled taut over its deck.

"We decided to push back our opening day ... because we don't want to add to clutter of boats in the harbor while there is a recovery mission still ongoing," he says. "I also don't want to take bookings for people that are simply trying to get on the boat so they can see the devastation of the bridge."

Normally he'd be hiring deckhands and captains to work for the summer, folks who work the winter in Florida and the summer up north. But for now, he's holding off any hiring.

He says it's too early to tell exactly what will be the impact on his business, but he expects bookings from tourists and conventioneers to decline for a time. And since the collapsed bridge is blocking access to the Chesapeake, he can't take longer, more lucrative bookings, where he'd sail out to the bay.

"Obviously, the No. 1 concern economically is going to be to clear the channel so shipping can start. And then after that happens, they have to build a bridge," he says. "But when they build a bridge, they need to block the channel to do so. So, you know, are we even going to have a bridge again?"

Officials say the first step is to remove the debris, then open the shipping channel, and later build a new bridge. President Biden has pledged that the federal government will pay for the bridge's rebuilding, which could take years .

It won't be necessary to close the channel while the bridge is under construction, says Benjamin Schafer, a professor of civil and systems engineering at Johns Hopkins University. "This has been a common challenge for bridge builders going back to at least the late 19th century," and there are a number of construction techniques that will allow the channel to stay open, he says.

A weird few years ahead

Along the waterfront at the Port Covington Marina on Thursday, all the boats were anchored. Next door, the terminal at Cruise Maryland sits empty, the giant ships now directed to other moorings. Just inland from the marina are the sleek new buildings of Baltimore Peninsula , with apartments, office space and restaurants.

Alex Snider is the waterfront operations manager for MAG Partners, the company that's redeveloping the peninsula. He says this time of year is generally quiet at the marina, before the season for recreational boaters picks up in late April or early May.

Even with the bridge collapse and the port closure, Snider talks about everything that's planned at the marina in the months ahead: "There's a sailing club that's going to be here, we've got a kayak launch. We've got the Baltimore Dragon Boat Club's going to be rowing out of here this year. So it's very busy."

Like many in Baltimore, the Key Bridge stirs up feelings of nostalgia for Snider, who used to run boats in the harbor.

"It was a beautiful bridge," he says. "I've piloted driven boats, captained boats under that bridge hundreds and hundreds of times. ... It's going to be a weird few years, not having that there visually."

Baltimore port workers are ‘living in a dream’ as harbor remains blocked

Dino Martinez, a tugboat captain in Baltimore’s harbor, feels as if he’s “living in a dream” since the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge sent a shock wave of fear and uncertainty through thousands of workers who rely on the port for their livelihoods.

But on Wednesday, less than 48 hours after the bridge tumbled into the Patapsco River, Martinez could whip out of his cellphone and see that help was on the way. Using a mobile telephone app that monitors maritime traffic, Martinez identified specialized engineering ships already sailing up Chesapeake Bay, the first steps in what will be a long process to clear debris from the shipping channel and get one of the country’s busiest ports back online .

“Right now, the Port of Baltimore is totally closed, and there is really no time frame that you can put on it being reopened,” Martinez said as he sipped his beer at a dive bar in Sparrows Point, Md. “I feel sorry for everybody. Everyone is greatly affected by this situation … But help is on the way, and I think it’s going to be okay.”

Throughout working-class neighborhoods that hug the shoreline of the Patapsco River in southeastern Baltimore County, scores of workers are now trying to make similar calculations about how long they may be out work. Already, rumors are flying between bar stools and community chat groups that layoffs may be imminent as more than 8,000 men and women have jobs directly tied to the Port of Baltimore.

Yet, amid a pledge from President Biden and administration officials that a massive infusion of federal help is on the way, there is now cautious optimism that operations at the port will resume before it really decimates workers’ livelihoods.

At the White House on Wednesday, both Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Coast Guard Vice Admiral Peter W. Gautier said reopening the shipping channel and the port are now the key focus of the nation’s recovery efforts. Between $100 million to $200 million in goods come through every day and at least $2 million in wages are at stake every day the port is closed, officials said.

“The Coast Guard highest priority now is restoring the waterway for shipping, stabilizing the motor vessel Dali, and removing it from the site,” Gautier said.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) echoed federal officials, saying in a news conference this week that reopening the port was now the state’s top priority. On Thursday, the state requested and received an initial payment of $60 million for early recovery and cleanup.

“I do not know what the total costs are going to be. I do not yet know what the full timeline is going to be,” Moore said. “But the thing that I do know is that the task in front of us, it will be real and it will be daunting. Despite this task ahead of being daunting, I can tell you right now our resolve is unshaken. We will get to completion. We will do it together.”

In the coming days, assets from the U.S. Navy are expected to arrive in Baltimore to examine how the waterways can be reopened. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has also announced it plans to deploy 1,100 engineers and specialists to help with recovery efforts.

Efforts are also underway to ship in large cranes and other heavy equipment to begin pulling apart the debris once the National Safety Transportation Board completes the initial phase of its investigation. The first wave of the equipment arrived near the accident scene in the pre-dawn hours of Thursday.

“They have already started turning the wheels on the salvage” operation, said Martinez, who expects his tugboat will be used to help position cranes and salvage equipment in the water. “They are getting bids on what it will cost and how it will get done.”

But throughout southeastern Baltimore County, where many longshoremen reside, there remains considerable unease as people wonder how long they may be out work.

Many longshoremen and other port workers frequently gather at a bar in Sparrows Point called the Muddy Beaver. The bar traces its roots back to 1934, when up to 30,000 local residents used to work at the now shuttered Bethlehem Steel plant. The steelworkers would cash their paychecks at a neighboring store and then walk over to the bar and crack open a beer.

The Muddy Beaver, where taxidermy lines the walls, is still known for opening at 7 a.m. to accommodate shift workers. It also has one of Baltimore County’s oldest and most lenient liquor licenses — patrons joke they are even allowed to pour their own shots behind the bar.

On Wednesday afternoon, when about a dozen men including Martinez were already seated the bar, Darlene Chance, 72, brought in canned goods from a local food bank. Chance, who has family who works at the port, said the community is already bracing for the possibility that there could be widespread layoffs if the port does not reopen soon.

“I definitely think a lot of them longshoremen will be laid off,” Chance said. “But I really think we will be fine and survive because we are a tough community, and a very strong community, and we will all work together here to get through this.”

One man at the bar said his son is a longshoreman at the port, but he asked not to be identified by name because he and his son share the same name. The man had just gotten off the phone with this son, who told him union leaders are already guiding employees on how they can file unemployment assistance claims.

“I said, ‘Son, you are going to be out of work through no fault of your own’,” the man said. “But I told him to get ready, because when this is cleared up, you better bring a sleeping bag [to work] because there will be so much work you won’t be able to get out of the port. It’s only a matter of time.”

Scott Cowan, president of the International Longshoremen’s Association Local 333, confirmed that union leaders are already coaching members through the unemployment process including setting up a dedicated telephone line offering advice. Cowan said 85 percent of his members are “daily hires” who only get paid “when a ship is in” dock.

“So we are waiting, and feel like we are out here in limbo, but we feel we are going to get through this,” said Cowan, who noted that port has been operational for centuries and has had a unionized workforce since the 1880s. “We are going to keep on trucking forward.”

At the Muddy Beaver, the sense of optimism that the region’s struggles will be relatively short-lived is driven by their belief that the nation — and the world — cannot live without the Port of Baltimore. They note the port is a national leader for imports of automobiles, sugar and farm equipment and for exporting coal.

“The port will survive. They are not going to eliminate the port,” said Matt Temple, 51. “It’s just going to be a matter of how long it takes and who will pay for it.”

But after he finished shift as longshoreman at Consol Energy’s coal yard at the Port of Baltimore, David Brothel isn’t sure he and his colleagues can survive a port closure that lasts more than a few months.

“I know most of my colleagues are worried that the government is not going to step up and do what they say they are going to do, as quickly and speedy as they say they are going to do,” Brothel, 40, said as he was passing through Sparrows Point on Wednesday. “I don’t think it is going to happen as fast as they say.”

What’s at stake, Brothel says, is well-paying jobs that drive the economies of communities throughout the East Coast. Some longshoremen make close to $200,000 a year working up to 70 hours a week, Brothel said.

If ships can’t collect the coal, Brothel said there will be a cascading impact on jobs at the coal mines in Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

“Once our yards are full, you can’t bring anymore in,” said Brothel. “So that stops all production up north, and unless they can stockpile that coal somewhere else, they can’t dig any more out of the ground.”

Brothel said a similar supply blockage occurred during the pandemic, when Consol’s coal yard went a month or two without accommodating new trains or ships.

For now, however, Brothel plans to just buckle in and wait it out. But he said the clock was already ticking.

“I know I can last three months,” he said. “But if this doesn’t clear up in three months, I may have to transfer to be a longshoreman in another state — maybe Texas, maybe Florida.”
