Ranking guidelines.
We selected the degree programs based on the quality of program and range of courses provided, as well as school awards, rankings, and reputation.
Our Methodology
Here at TheBestSchools.org, we take the trust and welfare of our readers very seriously. When making our school and program rankings, our top priority is ensuring that our readers get accurate, unbiased information that can help them make informed decisions about online education. That's why we've developed a rigorous ranking methodology that keeps the needs of our readers front and center.
Our proprietary, multi-criteria ranking algorithm analyzes key data indicators — as collected by the federal government — for each school or program. What data we use depends on the focus of each specific ranking, but in all cases, our ranking methodology is impartial: Schools cannot buy better rankings at TBS.
While specific criteria under consideration can vary by ranking, there are a few data points that we value most highly. They are affordability, academic quality, and online enrollment. Below, we break down our algorithm to help you understand what you're getting when you use one of our rankings.
- Affordability
- Online Enrollment
Data Sources
The data used in TBS rankings comes primarily from the federal government, and much of it is provided by the schools themselves. We aggregate and analyze this data to build our rankings.
The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) is our primary source. Its data comes from annual surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Every college, university, or technical school with access to federal financial aid must participate in these surveys, which include questions about enrollment, graduation rates, finances, and faculty qualifications. This is publicly available data, which you can access yourself through the College Navigator .
Additionally, because we value a personal touch and the professional experience of our staff and Academic Advisory Board, we vet all results and adjust rankings as necessary based on our collected knowledge of schools and degree programs. Depending on the ranking, we may obtain additional input from AcademicInfluence.com , subject matter experts, prior TBS ranking lists, or other sources we deem relevant to a particular ranking.
Breakdown of Our Rankings Methodology
About our ranking factors.
Here at TBS, we value what you value: quality education, affordability, and the accessibility of online education. These factors guide all of our program rankings.
Each of these factors are further broken down into weighted subfactors. For example, retention rates are weighted more heavily than availability of program options because they are a better indicator of student success.
We chose the following factors for our rankings because of their influence on learning experiences and graduate outcomes. However, students should always balance our rankings against their personal priorities. For instance, a learner who needs a fully online program may prioritize online flexibility more than our rankings do. Our rankings are designed to help you make a decision — not to make a decision for you.
- Collapse All
Academics - 75%
Affordability - 15%, online enrollment - 10%.
In all our school rankings and recommendations, we work for objectivity and balance. We carefully research and compile each ranking list, and as stated in our advertising disclosure, we do NOT permit financial incentives to influence rankings. Our articles never promote or disregard a school for financial gain.
If you have questions about our ranking methodology, please feel free to connect with our staff through contact page .
We thank you for your readership and trust.

Programs generally require 60 credit hours of coursework. These credits include core and elective coursework, a research component, and the dissertation.
Several factors can affect how long it takes to earn a DBA degree online. Some schools will honor more transfer credits than others. Accreditation for Online Doctorate in Business Administration Degrees
When a school is regionally or nationally accredited, it means that an accrediting agency has conducted a review and determined the school meets certain standards of educational quality. Of the two types, regional accreditation is generally considered more prestigious than national accreditation. While most schools and employers honor credits earned at a regionally accredited school, not all regionally accredited schools or employers will honor credits earned at a nationally accredited school.
When choosing an online DBA program, you should check to see that the school is accredited and determine whether this accreditation is regional or national. Common regional accrediting agencies include the Higher Learning Commission and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The Distance Education Accrediting Commission is a common national accrediting agency that reviews online programs. You should also look for online DBA programs accredited by business-specific accrediting agencies like the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs.
Two organizations oversee accreditation: the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). The ED is a government agency responsible for overseeing the quality and progress of educational programs in the U.S. CHEA is an independent organization representing more than 3,000 colleges and over 50 accrediting organizations. While neither entity grants accreditation to schools, both organizations review accrediting agencies to determine if they meet certain standards of quality. Both organizations also publish a list of accredited programs for the public’s use. To find out whether an online DBA or online Ph.D. program in business is accredited, consult the list of accredited programs on the ED and CHEA websites.

How Much Does an Online Ph.D. in Business Cost?
Most online Ph.D. in business programs take 4-6 years to complete, costing you anywhere from $50,000-$170,000 in total tuition and fees.
Online DBA programs take roughly 3-6 years, depending on your school and whether you're full time or part time. This means that a DBA can cost anywhere from $37,000-$170,000.
The main factors that affect how much you'll spend on your online business Ph.D. or DBA degree are:
- The length of your program
- Whether you enroll in a private or public school
- How much financial aid you qualify for
- Whether your program is fully funded (many doctoral programs are!)
- Whether you opt for a DBA or Ph.D.
Make sure to submit the FAFSA to see if you're eligible for federal grants and loans. Colleges and universities also use the FAFSA to award institutional aid.
In addition, check whether your employer offers tuition reimbursement.
Remember that when earning your DBA or Ph.D. in business online, you may need to budget for things like technology fees and a laptop.

What's the difference between a doctorate in business administration and a business Ph.D.?
Students can earn either a doctorate in business administration or a doctor of philosophy in business. Both degrees require three to five years of advanced business coursework and original research. However, a DBA trains students to find practical solutions to existing business problems, and prepares students to work in high-level business roles. Students in a Ph.D. program develop business theories at the abstract level, which prepares graduates to work in academia or research.
Insights from a doctor of business administration degree holder
Dr. David L Tuyo II, DBA, MBA serves as the President and CEO of University Credit Union . His career in the financial services industry spans over 20 years, with the majority dedicated to serving credit unions. He has served financial institutions in a multitude of roles, including COO, CFO, and chief investment officer.
ZDNet: Why did you choose to pursue a DBA program, rather than a business Ph.D. program?
David Tuyo: After completing my MBA, I was curious about what the next steps would be, while at the same time assessing the next 25+ years of my career. I have always wanted to pursue an academic interest, but only after retirement from the financial services industry.
With this in mind, I was choosing between a doctor of philosophy in management or a doctor of business administration. I spoke with many who were in the academic community, and then I weighed the consequences on my personal life, as we had young children in elementary school at that time. Since I was not going to pursue a career as an academic in the near term and the DBA offered a more professional/career-friendly option, I decided the DBA was the best path.
ZDNet: What were the biggest takeaway(s) you got from your DBA program that you may not have gotten otherwise?
DT: The entire experience was extraordinary. The research and exploration in fields that I had the pleasure of working within for decades were given new light and possibility. The partnership with faculty to push me to levels I had not previously achieved was beyond gratifying. The application of some of the work immediately in the financial services industry gave credence to the years of work in earning the DBA.
ZDNet: In what cases is a DBA worth it to pursue? In what cases might it not be worthwhile?
DT: For a professional wishing to pursue further academic work and not planning on entering the world of academics, the DBA is a phenomenal choice. For those wishing to enter the world of academia sooner than later, the Ph.D. would most likely be the best option.

Other: Rota has no colleges so, I appreciate the online classroom that the University of Phoenix allows. Many people on my island has successfully graduated from this online University. We trust its brand, and the services rendered to us and our geographic challenges are impeccable! They make all the necessary accommodations and exceptions to ensure that we succeed. We are also prone to super typhoons and breakdown in our communication infrastructure so, these are factors that this University has come to consider and have a back up plan for its students ensuring that we do not fall too far behind, or are able to continue once those vital infrastructures are back in place. The online classroom are very user friendly especially to my community where English is our second language. They have resources to make it the entire process comprehensible and easy to access. The PhD program curriculum requires coursework at HBS and other Harvard discipline departments, and with HBS and Harvard faculty on advisory committees. Faculty throughout Harvard guide the programs through their participation on advisory committees.
How do I know which program is right for me?
There are many paths, but we are one HBS. Our PhD students draw on diverse personal and professional backgrounds to pursue an ever-expanding range of research topics. Explore more here about each program’s requirements & curriculum, read student profiles for each discipline as well as student research , and placement information.
The PhD in Business Administration grounds students in the disciplinary theories and research methods that form the foundation of an academic career. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program has five areas of study: Accounting and Management , Management , Marketing , Strategy , and Technology and Operations Management . All areas of study involve roughly two years of coursework culminating in a field exam. The remaining years of the program are spent conducting independent research, working on co-authored publications, and writing the dissertation. Students join these programs from a wide range of backgrounds, from consulting to engineering. Many applicants possess liberal arts degrees, as there is not a requirement to possess a business degree before joining the program
The PhD in Business Economics provides students the opportunity to study in both Harvard’s world-class Economics Department and Harvard Business School. Throughout the program, coursework includes exploration of microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, probability and statistics, and econometrics. While some students join the Business Economics program directly from undergraduate or masters programs, others have worked in economic consulting firms or as research assistants at universities or intergovernmental organizations.
The PhD program in Health Policy (Management) is rooted in data-driven research on the managerial, operational, and strategic issues facing a wide range of organizations. Coursework includes the study of microeconomic theory, management, research methods, and statistics. The backgrounds of students in this program are quite varied, with some coming from public health or the healthcare industry, while others arrive at the program with a background in disciplinary research
The PhD program in Organizational Behavior offers two tracks: either a micro or macro approach. In the micro track, students focus on the study of interpersonal relationships within organizations and the effects that groups have on individuals. Students in the macro track use sociological methods to examine organizations, groups, and markets as a whole, including topics such as the influence of individuals on organizational change, or the relationship between social missions and financial objectives. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program includes core disciplinary training in sociology or psychology, as well as additional coursework in organizational behavior.

UCLA’s Online Engineering Master’s Program Again Ranked No. 1 in the U.S.
Apr 25, 2024
By UCLA Samueli Newsroom
T he UCLA Samueli School of Engineering’s online master’s degree program has earned the No. 1 ranking in U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 survey of the nation’s best online graduate engineering programs . This is the second year in a row — and the sixth time in 10 years — that the program has held the top spot.
The Master of Science in Engineering Online program , or MSOL, which is delivered entirely online by the same UCLA Samueli engineering and computer science faculty who teach on campus, allows professionals to earn a master’s degree in two years and a quarter while holding a full-time job. Since its inception in 2007, the program has awarded more than 1,500 degrees, including 182 in 2023.
“This top ranking is a testament to our faculty’s commitment to providing the highest standards of instruction across disciplines, as well as the hard work of our excellent students, who are motivated to expand their knowledge base and skill sets,” said Ah-Hyung “Alissa” Park , the Ronald and Valerie Sugar Dean of UCLA Samueli.
“We have continuously refined our online curriculum to ensure its relevance to industry while maintaining the same rigor of our traditionally delivered master’s programs,” said Jenn-Ming Yang, MSOL faculty director and UCLA Samueli’s associate dean for international initiatives and online programs.
With 16 specialized areas of study, the program offers a robust curriculum in high-demand areas, such as data science engineering, engineering management, manufacturing and design, and sustainable water engineering. UCLA Samueli also offers online non-degree certificate programs in power systems, cybersecurity, engineering entrepreneurship and other areas.
“We have continuously refined our online curriculum to ensure its relevance to industry while maintaining the same rigor of our traditionally delivered master’s programs,” said Jenn-Ming Yang , MSOL faculty director and UCLA Samueli’s associate dean for international initiatives and online programs. “Meeting those standards, providing the very best experience and incorporating student feedback have been the guiding principles in how we design and teach our courses.”
U.S. News based its 2024 online engineering program rankings on five categories: engagement, faculty credentials and training, peer assessments by senior academic officials at engineering schools, services and technologies, and student excellence.
