With about 424 original movies and around 10 more on the way this year, Netflix offers the largest library of original films. No matter your favorite genre, Netflix has something for you: The streaming service is bringing back the rom-com with originals like “When We First Met,” “Set it Up,” and “Someone Great,” and adapting teen novels into charming hits like “Dumplin’” and “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.” Thrillers like “Bird Box” and “Hush” are haunting living rooms everywhere, not to mention the seasonal suite of corny Christmas films like “The Christmas Prince” and “A Christmas Calendar.” With Netflix, you’re pretty much guaranteed a regular rotation of exciting new movies.

If you’ve recently invested in a 4K TV, you’ll be pleased to find Netflix offers around 600 “Ultra HD 4K” titles. That’s far more 4K titles than any other streaming service (Amazon is next in line with about 80). Netflix has been debuting all of its original content in 4K and HDR since about 2014. Even if you don’t yet own a 4K screen, Netflix’s dedication to keeping up with technology advancements is a good sign for its longevity. Note that you’ll have to pay more to access 4K content: $16 per month for the Premium plan, versus $13 for the Standard (HD) plan. However, the Premium option gives you an additional two screens of simultaneous streaming, allowing four people to watch at once. And that’s perhaps the biggest downside to Netflix: Its services, in general, are more expensive than the competition.

When cataloging the audience and critic ratings for original content, we found HBO to consistently produce the highest-rated films. With nearly as many original films as Netflix, that’s not an easy thing to pull off. We calculated its collective IMDb average score at 7.1 (vs. 6.7 for Netflix) and its Rotten Tomatoes critic average scores at 86%. Those numbers mean you’re less likely to suffer through a stilted comedy or predictable drama when tuning into HBO. In fact, its dark retelling “Chernobyl” recently topped IMDb’s best-rated TV shows list with a 9.7/10.

Fans of documentaries can spend a year binging the collection of 250+ films — averaging a 91% from Rotten Tomatoes critics. For comparison, Amazon’s original documentary collection hosts a measly six films. Unfortunately, you can’t view any of those on a fancy 4K TV, as HBO has yet to release titles in HDR or 4K.

When it comes time to subscribe, those without a cable TV subscription will use the HBO Now app. If you have a cable contract already, its best to go through that provider to add the premium channel and watch via the HBO Go app. Sound confusing? We broke the difference down a bit further here .

Prime subscription Can rent and buy movies 4K content included

Less popular movies

Amazon’s biggest advantage is all the perks that come with a Prime membership. Subscribing to Amazon Prime not only unlocks Prime Video but also Prime Music and a free e-book each month. The free two-day shipping on Amazon.com orders will be the biggest draw for most consumers. An Amazon Prime subscription costs $119 for a full year (about $10 per month), cheaper than an HBO Now subscription. Technically, you can pay for just Prime Video for $9 per month, but we think the other Prime perks are worth the extra dollar per month. And unlike Netflix, you don’t have to purchase a higher tier of service for 4K content.

Unlike any of our other movie streaming services, you can rent and buy movies on Prime Video. It can take quite a while for a new movie to be available on a streaming service, and some movies may never come to streaming. Prime Video offers the luxury of renting blockbuster hits on a Friday night, without having to wait around to see which home video releases are on your streaming service.

And no filler content here: Sundance chooses each title for its unique voice, perspective, and storytelling. Sundance filmmakers will also curate collections of their favorite films for viewers to peruse, often with text introductions and insights. The downside of such an exclusive criteria is a small catalog: Sundance Now only hosts a couple hundred films in total.

No streaming service does artsy indie films like Sundance Now, and all it costs is $5 per month — making it our cheapest movie streaming service. At that price, don’t expect offline viewing or HDR content though. If you’re looking to supplement your mainstream media with some off-the-beat content, give Sundance Now a try.

The Criterion Collection is basically a virtual course on film history. Its library of over 1,700 films focuses on classic and foreign films from decades past. That doesn’t mean these films are obscure, though — The Criterion Collection has 30 of IMDb’s Top 25 movies (Netflix has 38). To sweeten the deal, nearly every film comes with a suite of special features. Director interviews, guest curators, themed collections, and behind-the-scenes footage all accompany The Criterion Collection’s content.

However, for those whose movie tastes are more modern, this may not be the movie streaming service for you. Less than 20% of its library are films from the most recent decade. If you’re looking for timeless critic classics, The Criterion Collection will tempt any film buff.

Few original movies

Though Hulu was one of our favorite services for TV streaming , it doesn’t have as much to offer for movies. Its original movie library is composed entirely of documentaries, and there are only eight of them. With how often films come and go on different platforms, we gave favor to services that filled their library with original and exclusive movies. There’s also no offline viewing for watching those documentaries on a flight or internet-challenged area.

If you’re looking for a movie streaming service that also nails TV shows, Hulu has the lock on network programming. Cord cutters will appreciate the ability to watch popular shows on Hulu the day after they air. It’s also a comparably affordable service at $8 per month, though you’ll have to suffer through a few commercials. For $12 per month, you can stream commercial-free.

How We Chose the Best Movie Streaming Services

The best movie streaming service will be a little different for each viewer, as we all have different tastes and preferences. After speaking to some streaming and film experts, we learned that high-quality content, ease-of-use, and value are most important.

To vet for quality, we looked at the ratings for over 900 films across each service. Critic and audience reception from aggregators like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb are a useful indicator of quality. When a service like HBO has a higher average rating than the competition, it tells viewers that they can generally expect exceptional movies and exciting new releases.

Navigating the services’ platform is an important factor too. If you have a hard time finding new movies to watch, you’re less inclined to visit the service. Testing the interface for personalized algorithms and intuitive use was an important part of discovering the best streaming service.

We considered value and cost in our evaluation too. Some services have a low entry price but you’d have to upgrade to access basic features (like ad-free viewing and HD content). Other services may cost a bit more but come with advanced features and unique perks (like two-day shipping with Amazon Prime).

It can be hard to decide how many services to subscribe to and which ones will fit your lifestyle best — especially as individual networks continue to announce their own services. So many of the major services seemingly just want to highlight their own latest acquisition or buzzy project. But we at Vulture have no horse in the streaming race: Our job is to help you figure out what to watch by recommending the best movies each of these services has to offer at any given time. To that end, we have gone over the must-see titles on each platform and winnowed them down to the list below. It could easily be 100 movies long, but we tried to keep it manageable — a tight 30! — and if you come back every month, you can expect to see it updated with new selections. The best film version of Finney’s tale is the ‘70s one with Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Veronica Cartwright, Jeff Goldblum, and Leonard Nimoy. A riveting unpacking of ‘70s paranoia, this is a truly terrifying movie.

Charming and riveting, the only crime here is that there wasn’t a whole franchise of films with Washington playing Easy.

Glengarry Glen Ross

Year: 1992 Runtime: 1h 40m Director: James Foley

For a long time, it felt like David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize–winning 1984 masterpiece was unfilmable, but Foley, working with the playwright as screenwriter, figured it out, assembling one of the best ensembles of the ‘90s to do so. Alec Baldwin notoriously steals his one scene, but the entire cast here is a stunner, especially Al Pacino (who was Oscar-nominated), Alan Arkin, and Jack Lemmon.

Jurassic Park

Year: 1993 Runtime: 2h 6m Director: Steven Spielberg

An instant classic when it was released in 1993, Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur blockbuster spawned a franchise that’s still humming almost three decades later with the 2022 release of the wildly successful Dominion . The first three films in the series, including Spielberg’s sequel The Lost World , are on Netflix right now, alongside the pretty fun Camp Cretaceous.

Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman star in the latest from Carol and Far from Heaven director Todd Haynes, a stunning character study of an actress who discovers that some people are impossible to figure out. Portman plays a star who tries to get under the skin of Moore’s character, a woman who raped a child when she was a teacher, and later married that young man. Charles Melton is phenomenal as the now-grown victim, stuck in perpetual adolescence.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Year: 2023 Runtime: 2h 20m Director: Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson

This is how you do a big-budget blockbuster sequel, developing the themes of the first movie and setting up the stake for what now appears will be one of the best trilogies in superhero history. Packed with so much detail and creativity, it’s a film you’ll want to watch over and over again.

Flags of Our Fathers

Year: 2006 Runtime: 2h 12m Director: Clint Eastwood

In 2006, Clint Eastwood released a pair of excellent World War II films in Letters from Iwo Jima and this adaptation of the book of the same name by James Bradley and Ron Powers. It’s about the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945, the one that led to one of the most famous photos of all time. It’s a bit hokey, but it’s also incredibly well-made, like almost all Eastwood, and a film that’s not available on streaming very often.

Year: 2017 Runtime: 1h 44m Director: Jordan Peele

This is the one that really changed the current state of horror, reminding studios how acclaimed and popular it could be if treated with the right respect. It also won its creator an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, launching one of the most interesting careers of the current era. It’s held up remarkably well, and it’s hardly ever available on streaming services, so take this chance while you can to rewatch a movie whose influence is still shaking the industry.

King of New York

Year: 1990 Runtime: 1h 43m Director: Abel Ferrara

The amazing Abel Ferrara directed this crime epic that oozes with style. Three decades after its release, it’s still one of the most cited films of this kind of its era. One of the main reasons for that is the cast. Christopher Walken leads the way as the legendary drug lord Frank White, but the whole ensemble here is amazing, including Laurence Fishburne, David Caruso, Wesley Snipes, Steve Buscemi, and Giancarlo Esposito.

Road to Perdition

Year: 2002 Runtime: 1h 57m Director: Sam Mendes

See, Tom Hanks doesn’t always play the nice guy! In Sam Mendes’ adaptation of the Max Allan Collins graphic novel, America’s dad plays a mob enforcer seeking revenge. What’s most memorable about this film is Mendes’ remarkable attention to period detail. It’s a gorgeous film just to live in for a couple hours. Don’t do this one on your phone.

Year: 2023 Runtime: 1h 55m Director: Greta Gerwig

One of the biggest films of 2023 has landed on Max. Greta Gerwig’s daring blockbuster is a comedy that works both as a reminder of the power imagination and the fight for equality. Anyone who thinks this movie is anti-male isn’t paying any attention. The theme of the movie is that no one — not even Barbie or Ken — should be defined by traditional roles. We should all be free to play however we want. It’s a wonderful film that will truly stand the test of time.

Year: 1942 Runtime: 1h 42m Director: Michael Curtiz

One of the most popular films of all time, Casablanca is now over eight decades old, but it’s still being watched somewhere every single day. Why has the story of Rick and Ilsa sustained as generations of other movies have come and gone? There’s something timeless in this tale of an ex-pat (Humphrey Bogart) who is asked to help the love of his life (Ingrid Bergman) escape the city of Casablanca during World War II. This is the first movie that so many people think of when they hear the phrase “classic cinema” for a reason.

The Green Knight

Year: 2021 Runtime: 2h 10m Director: David Lowery

An adaptation of the 14th century poem, The Green Knight is one of the most visually striking films of the decade so far. David Lowery directs Dev Patel as Gawain, who sets out on a journey to face the title character. More than just a mere tale of heroism, this is a surreal, gorgeous piece of work that challenges preconceptions of fantasy dramas and feels vitally fresh.

Year: 2019 Runtime: 2h 12m Director: Bong Joon-ho

Remember not that long ago before the world changed, and we could all rally around a South Korean film becoming the first foreign flick ever to win the Oscar for Best Picture ? It really was a crazy time. Thanks to Hulu’s relationship with distributor Neon, the streamer was the only place you’ll find Bong Joon-ho’ s hysterical and thrilling study of class conflict for a long time, but the beloved thriller has now dropped on Max too.

Spirited Away

Year: 2001 Runtime: 2h 4m Director: Hayao Miyazaki

Almost all of the Studio Ghibli films are on Max, the exclusive home to them when it comes to streaming. The truth is that we could write thousands of words about the impact of Hayao Miyazaki and his colleagues (and we have: here’s a ranking of the entire output of the most important modern animation studio in the world), but for now we’ll recommend starting with Spirited Away , My Neighbor Totoro , and Castle in the Sky . You won’t stop.

All of Us Strangers

Year: 2023 Runtime: 1h 45m Director: Andrew Haigh

One of the best films of 2023 is exclusively available on Hulu thanks to the relationship between the company and Fox Searchlight—both owned by Disney, essentially. Andrew Scott is stunning as a man who essentially travels in time to visit the parents (Jamie Bell and Claire Foy) who died when he was young, all while starting a relationship with one of his neighbors (Paul Mescal). Imagine getting to say what you never could to those you lost and allowing them a chance to see how you’ve changed too. It’s a beautiful, moving piece of work.

Call Me by Your Name

Year: 2017 Runtime: 2h 12m Director: Luca Guadagnino

One of the best films of the 2010s, this drama stars Timothee Chalamet as a boy who discovers his own sexuality when he’s wooed by an older man, played by Armie Hammer. Delicate and moving, this is a remarkable drama because of how true it feels, anchored by great performances throughout, not just from the two leads but the amazing Michael Stuhlbarg too.

Year: 2020 Runtime: 1h 48m Director: Chloe Zhao

The Oscar winner for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress , this 2020 drama is one of the most moving films of the young decade so far, and it’s exclusively on Hulu thanks to the company’s relationship with Searchlight (they’re both owned by Disney). Frances McDormand stars as Fern, a woman displaced by the loss of her husband and job, sending her out on the road. Blending non-fiction filmmaking choices like the use of non-actors telling their own stories with a deep sense of character-building, this is a phenomenal film.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Year: 2019 Runtime: 2h 42m Director: Quentin Tarantino

It’s hard to believe it’s already been almost a half-decade since Quentin Tarantino’s last movie, one of the last greats of the 2010s. Wildly misunderstood during production (and even a bit after release), it’s way more than just a reclamation of the Sharon Tate murders, it’s a funny, scary, smart alternate version of Hollywood history with some of the career-best performances from Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, and Oscar winner Brad Pitt.

Killers of the Flower Moon

Year: 2023 Runtime: 3h 26m Director: Martin Scorsese

One of the most acclaimed films of the 2020s is now exclusively available for subscribers of Apple TV+. Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro star in an epic drama that’s about nothing less than the violent formation of this country. When the Osage people became the richest per capita in the country, the white power figures in the region did everything they could to take it from them. As well-made as any streaming original of all time, it’s not only the best film on Apple TV+, it’s one of the best films you could watch on any streaming service, anywhere.

Wolfwalkers

Year: 2020 Runtime: 1h 43m Directors: Tomm Moore, Ross Stewart

Wolfwalkers should have won the Oscar in early 2021. It’s a lyrical and gorgeous final act to Cartoon Saloon’s “Irish Folklore Trilogy,” the story of a girl named Robyn Goodfellowe, whose father has been hired to hunt wolves. Robyn befriends a shapeshifter, a girl who is both wolf and human, in a story that incorporates modern storytelling with Irish folklore and inspired visual style.

The Holdovers

Year: 2023 Runtime: 2h 13m Director: Alexander Payne

Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph won Golden Globes, and Randolph won an Oscars, for this phenomenal holiday comedy, exclusive to Peacock. The ‘70s-set story of a boarding school over holiday break already feels like a comedy classic, a movie that people will be watching, especially around the end of the year, for generations to come.

Oppenheimer

Year: 2023 Runtime: 3h Director: Christopher Nolan

Oppenheimer is a proud biopic: a dense, big-swing condensation of a 600-page biography about one of the most important men of the 20th century and about (in the movie’s own words) “the most important fucking thing to ever happen in the history of the world.” But Oppenheimer is also the opposite of a standard-issue Great Man movie: The achievement here is monstrous, and the psychic dissolution of the main character before our very eyes is heartbreaking. —Bilge Ebiri

Year: 1989 Runtime: 2h 20m Director: James Cameron

James Cameron’s 1989 sci-fi blockbuster is one of the most prominent films never to have been released on Blu-ray in the United States — but that finally changes in March with the 4K release, and it’s finally more readily available on streaming too. People who love this movie really love this movie, and it’s great to see it finally coming to the fans who have deserved it for so long.

Year: 1974 Runtime: 2h 10m Director: Roman Polanski

Forget it Jake, it’s Chinatown. One of the best movies of the ‘70s, this Best Picture nominee (and Best Screenplay winner) tells the story of Jake Gittes, played unforgettably by Jack Nicholson, as he investigates an adulterer and finds something much more insidious under the surface of Los Angeles. It’s a must-see, as important as almost any film from its era.

The Godfather

Netflix may get most of the attention, but it’s hardly a one-stop shop for cinephiles looking to stream essential classic and contemporary films. Each of the prominent streaming platforms caters to its own niche of film obsessives.

From the boundless wonders of the Criterion Channel to the new frontiers of streaming offered by the likes of Ovid and Peacock, IndieWire’s monthly guide highlights the best of what’s coming to every major streamer, with an eye toward exclusive titles that may help readers decide which of these services is right for them.

“Napoleon” (dir. Ridley Scott, 2023)

Apple TV+ subscribers think they’re so great because they have BOATS. Ridley Scott’s latest — and funniest — historical epic comes to streaming this month, so everyone who missed “Napoleon” in theaters will finally have a chance to watch Joaquin Phoenix get cucked on an imperial scale and think to themselves: “I bet the long-promised director’s cut of this is going to be so much better.” There’s no doubt that it will be, but for now, this ain’t bad.

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) (dir. Sam Wrench, 2023)

As usual, Disney+’s monthly slate is mighty light on original content, and — as usual — the streamer is banking on a single movie to make up for it. This March, however, that movie is probably more than enough to get the job done. Everything about “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” suggests that it should be the biggest thing on streaming for the foreseeable future. Exclusivity? Check. A long, appetite-whetting window between its blockbuster theatrical release and its home video debut? Check. A degree of rewatchability that’s typically reserved for kids fare like “Bluey?” Swifties are going to stream this thing on such a constant loop that it’s going to feel like part of the wallpaper. Compared to what it cost to see Taylor in concert last year, that ever-increasing Disney+ subscription fee suddenly doesn’t seem so bad.

“Freddy Got Fingered” (dir. Tom Green, 2001)

The Razzies have always been a dumb and misguided endeavor (one that blessedly seems less popular than ever these days), but the anti-Oscars have finally served a meaningful purpose for the first time since giving us that clip of Halle Berry showing up to claim her Worst Actress prize for “Catwoman.” That purpose: Providing a useful context for the Criterion Channel to package some of the most unfairly maligned films of the last 40 years into a single retrospective… a retrospective that allows Tom Green’s “Freddy Got Fingered” to take its rightful place on the hallowed streaming platform alongside the work of masters like Ingmar Bergman and Akira Kurosawa. Daddy, would you like some sausage? Well, it’s time to eat up (other must-watch standouts from the package include Friedkin’s “Cruising,” Fassbinder’s “Querelle,” and Brest’s “Gigli,” which is both a lot better and so much worse than you may have heard). 

Never one to let a single retro hog the spotlight, the Channel has also put together a tribute to method acting that spans from the 1927 Lon Chaney vehicle “The Unknown” to “The Master” and Robert Greene’s “Kate Plays Christine,” a Jane Russell series that includes the likes of “Macao” and “The Tall Men,” and an essential spotlight on the early films of Hou Hsiao-hsien (which inspired the great David Bordwell’s final blog post before his recent death). Also, be sure to put aside three hours for Claire Simon’s remarkable “Our Body,” an observational documentary that sees the entire world and the way women are forced to navigate through it from within the gynecology ward of a Paris hospital.

“Anatomy of a Fall” (dir. Justine Triet, 2023)

It’s a big month for Hulu subscribers, as two of the year’s strongest Best Picture nominees are coming to the service in addition to one of the greatest movies from the director of this year’s inevitable Best Picture winner, Christopher Nolan (I can see the future, and it’s pretty much just Ludwig Göransson’s score blaring through the Dolby Theater on a constant loop as several reserved European men and Robert Downey Jr. walk up to the stage). “Poor Things” would be enough to backstop a fantastic new release slate on its own, but “Anatomy of a Fall” is perhaps the most exciting Hulu exclusive this month.

When was the last time a French legal drama was able to break through to a mainstream audience, get nominated for just about every American movie award, and inspire more fancams than a CW show during the glory days of Tumblr? (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, please take a moment to google Swann Arlaud). Now that America is starting to get over its aversion to subtitles, this — largely English-language — is poised to become an even bigger sensation.

– “Dunkirk” (3/1) – “Goodfellas” (3/1) – “Poor Things” (3/7)

“Wonka” (dir. Paul King, 2023)

Well there’s chocolate, and there’s choc-o-late, and Paul King’s mega-successful follow-up to “Paddington 2” certainly proved to be the latter, despite months of understandable pre-release negativity around the idea of a musical origin story starring Timothée Chalamet as cinema’s most demented candyman. Hot on the heels of its blockbuster theatrical run, “Wonka” is making its way to streaming, where it stands a decent chance of cementing its status as the first new holiday classic since “Elf” (one look at Hugh Grant’s oompa-loompa is enough to know that there’s no trace of God in this film, but yes, “Wonka” is a Christmas movie, and no, I will not be taking any questions on the matter at this time).

For those less enamored by the idea of watching Paul Atreides milk a computer-generated giraffe, Max is also premiering the wickedly clever “Dream Scenario” along with other A24 hits like “Good Time” (RIP Buddy Duress) and “The Green Knight.”

“The Settlers” (dir. Felipe Gálvez, 2023)

IndieWire Managing Editor Christian Blauvelt was the first person on staff to see Felipe Gálvez’s “The Settlers” before it premiered at Cannes last year, and he couldn’t stop raving to the rest of the team about how the Un Certain Regard premiere would be one of the best movies at a festival that also went on to produce the likes of “May December” and “The Zone of Interest.”

When MUBI released the Chilean Western last fall, Christian leapt at the chance to review this story about a wealthy landowner who recruits a Scotsman to exterminate the Indigenous Selk’nam people on his land in Tierra del Fuego. 

Calling it “one of the most chilling art-Westerns to come along in some time,” Christian wrote that “‘The Settlers’ may remind some viewers of a Budd Boetticher film when they’re watching it: following three men on horseback on a cross-country journey, it dramatizes questions of identity and belonging, and how these things can be written in violence. Most Boetticher-like, in a tight 98 minutes ‘The Settlers’ says more than a lot of films double its length. It’s also a deeply felt work of activism with a message that needs to be heard in Chile. Just as nothing about the Pinochet coup in 1973 or the resulting dictatorship is taught in Chilean schools today, so is nothing about the genocide of the Selk’nam, a culture that is considered extinct, with only one living person today able to speak their language. This is a film that shows that, as easy as it is to forget about the past, it’s easier still when it was never taught in the first place.”

As amusing as it is that Netflix is streaming “Bodies Bodies Bodies” the day before the release of the platform’s mega-budget new sci-fi show “3 Body Problem,” and as oddly compelling as it is to watch a sad Czech astronaut played by Adam Sandler open his heart to a fourth-dimensional alien spider who sounds a lot like Paul Dano, none of the original — or at least temporarily exclusive — movies on Netflix’s March release slate are as exciting as the millennial classics that will be streaming alongside them.

Carl Franklin’s “Devil in a Blue Dress” just missed the cut for IndieWire’s list of the 100 Best Movies of the ’90s , while “Beverly Hills Ninja,” well… that one wasn’t really in contention, but even Chris Farley’s least iconic films only seem to get funnier with every passing year.

And if we ever get around to celebrating the aughts, I can guarantee that Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “Love & Basketball” will be a major topic of conversation, as that long under-appreciated sports romance has finally been canonized as the modern classic that it is. If you haven’t picked up the new Criterion Collection Blu-ray, Netflix would be happy to remind you why you should.

– “Beverly Hills Ninja” (3/1) – “Devil in a Blue Dress” (3/1) – “Spaceman” (3/1)

“After Blue” (dir. Bertrand Mandico, 2021)

“If you unearthed a glittery demon with one hairy arm who awakened your deepest desires from the third eye between her legs, what lengths would you travel to find her again?” So begins former IndieWire writer Jude Dry’s review of Bertrand Mandico’s seductive and ethereal “After Blue,” which only becomes more intriguing from there. 

Jude continues: “Set on a fantasy planet where only women can survive the harsh climate, the adventure follows a mother and daughter on a grueling journey to find and kill the evil ‘Kate Bush,’ rumored to be death herself. One part ‘Annihilation,’ one part ‘The Love Witch,’ and cast under the veneer of a sadistic ‘The NeverEnding Story, the film creates a lush — sometimes grotesque — alternate universe ruled by unique rules, creatures, and longings. Love it or hate it, you’ve never seen anything quite like ‘After Blue.’”

– “Little Palestine: Diary of a Siege” (3/7) – “Violet” (3/8)

“Arrival” (dir. Denis Villeneuve, 2016)

I may not be the world’s biggest Denis Villeneuve fan (I’m told that my negative review of “Dune: Part Two” didn’t sit well with the kind of people who plan their holy wars around Rotten Tomatoes scores), but I’m happy to join the love parade whenever he directs something with enough humanity to offset his signature bombast. Ironically, it took a movie about aliens for Villeneuve to really wrap his arms around what makes people tick.

A very good Ted Chiang adaptation that stops just short of greatness thanks to a bunch of third act mishegoss (endless love for Michael Stuhlbarg, but the story gets snagged on his character like a plastic bag on a tree branch), “Arrival” epitomizes Villeneuve’s enduring fascination with cycles of violence and the cold recognition of fate. In this case, that cycle is on a cosmic scale, but — with major assists from Amy Adams and Max Richter — it registers on crushingly intimate terms as well.

– “The Last Temptation of Christ” (3/1) – “Tár” (3/27) – “Jackie Brown” (3/31)

“Not Another Teen Movie” (dir. Joel Gallen, 2001)

Arriving a few years ahead of the Early Aughts Spoof Boom (you all remember that, right?), the unfettered meta genius of “Not Another Teen Movie” has been largely subsumed into the wretched likes of “Epic Movie,” “Disaster Movie,” and the rest of the witless parodies that followed in its wake. In truth, it should be a felony to mention those ghastly imitations in the same breath as Joel Gallen’s masterpiece, and I will gladly spend the rest of my life in jail if that’s what it takes to make this point.

A self-reflexive send-up of “She’s All That,” “Bring it On,” “10 Things I Hate About You,” and every other high school comedy since “The Breakfast Club,” “Not Another Teen Movie” so thoroughly skewered its subject that Hollywood had to rethink the entire genre (for better or worse).

Get past the gross-out gags and a handful of offensive punchlines, and you’ll be treated to the densest and most detailed satire of its kind since the likes of “The Naked Gun,” in addition to (what’s still) the funniest performance of Chris Evans’ career. But fair warning for the faint of heart: Watching “Not Another Teen Movie” means having to look at Janey Briggs for the better part of 90 minutes, and she can be a lot to stomach. As the great Jake Wyler once described the most abominable reject in his senior class: “She’s got paint on her overalls. What is that?!?” It’s disgusting, is what that is. But that’s the magic of this movie. By the time it’s over, you somehow believe that a swamp thing like her could actually become prom queen.

– “Inside Llewyn Davis” (3/1) – “Sleeping with Other People” (3/11) – “Carol” (3/19)

“Battle Royale” (dir. Kinji Fukasaku, 2000)

Doug Liman’s “Road House” remake is obviously Prime Video’s biggest get this month (see this SXSW-opening, throat-ripping crowd-pleaser as it was meant to be seen: While watching Mormon tradwife cooking TikToks on the “For You” tab of your Twitter page), and yet Kinji Fukasaku’s ultra-provocative “Battle Royale” demands special attention, as this proto-“Hunger Games” satire about a class of Japanese high school students stranded on a remote island and forced to fight to the death had been so hard to see in the United States until it started bouncing between the various streamers.

America can stomach the idea of school kids shooting each other in real life, but add Beat Takashi and some exploding neck collars into the mix, well… that’s just obscene. The real shame is that Fukasaku’s twisted shootout has only become more relevant to our country in this age of zero-sum politics, and against the backdrop of the resulting culture war that’s twisted young bodies into a battlefield unto themselves.

“The Strangers” (dir. Bryan Bertino, 2008)

Ahead of the three  Renny Harlin(!?)-directed prequels that will be released this year, Shudder is inviting subscribers to remember why the original continues to endure in our minds. Bryan Bertino’s directorial debut is small as can be, but its simplicity is also its greatest virtue. The premise is so unnerving because — unlike a zombie apocalypse or a Texas chainsaw massacre — it could happen to anyone, anywhere. And in “The Strangers” it does. Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman play a very ordinary couple whose very ordinary relationship drama is interrupted by a knock at the door; three masked villains, empowered by nothing but some knives and their sadistic desires, have dropped by to ruin their night. The wicked games they play are carried out with vivid rage and raw brutality, but this is the rare horror movie that only gets scarier with its final reveal. Why did these maniacs target this particular couple, and what neighborhood will they be in tomorrow? The answers to those questions continue to keep us awake at night.

Welcome to our guide of the Best Movies of 2024, featuring every Certified Fresh movie as they come in week by week!

In March : Love Lies Bleeding and Problemista , both from A24 . One Life , starring Anthony Hopkins. Ordinary Angels , starring Hilary Swank. In horror, we got You’ll Never Find Me and  Late Night with the Devil , the latter which also tops our best horror of 2024 list . Dialogue-free animation Robot Dreams and Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World jockeying for the top spot here.

And what about February ? Dune pretty good, thanks for asking. Part Two went Certified Fresh within an hour after the reviews embargo lifted on February 21st. With it outclassing the first Dune , we took a look at 20 sequels that got better Tomatometer scores than their originals . Otherwise, things got freaky with horror film Stopmotion and the comic zaniness of Hundreds of Beavers taking the crown for the best-reviewed of the year.

We didn’t have a blockbuster January like we did in 2023 ‘s, when genre surprises M3GAN and Plane went Certified Fresh. But Daisy Ridley got her post-Skywalker win with Sometimes I Think About Dying . Mads Mikkelsen re-teamed with his A Royal Affair director Nikolaj Arcel to find The Promised Land. With The Crime Is Mine , Francois Ozon is getting career-best reviews, and his 10th Certified Fresh film over the past decade-and-change. And Netflix scored with The Kitchen , Orion and the Dark , and Good Grief .

When it comes to originals,  Netflix and  Amazon have the deepest libraries of prestige movies. But ever since  CODA   won the Best Picture Oscar , it’s become clear that some of the best movies are on Apple TV+.

As with any streaming service, not every film on the roster is a winner, but from  Billie Eilish documentaries to Sundance darlings, Apple’s streaming service is building up a strong catalog to run alongside its growing slate of  beloved TV shows .

When Mad Max: Fury Road came out in 2015, it was three decades late and right on time. Released 30 years after mastermind George Miller released the last Mad Max movie— Beyond Thunderdome —it was a jolt to moviegoers who were otherwise being treated to rehashes like Fantastic Four and Terminator Genisys . Easily one of the best postapocalyptic films ever, it’s all style but not devoid of substance. It also introduced Charlize Theron’s Furiosa, a crusader for the women being subjected to the tyranny of Immortan Joe. Fury Road will be on Apple TV+ until the end of April—just enough time for you to watch it again before its follow-up, Furiosa , hits theaters in May.

OK, so Napoleon didn’t exactly get critics’ pens flying , but sometimes you’re just in the mood for a big, prestige-y Ridley Scott historical drama, you know? This one stars Joaquin Phoenix as the title character, following his quest to conquer, well, as much as he possibly can. However, rather than being a sprint to the Battle of Waterloo, this pic gives attention to the French emperor’s emotionally rocky relationship with his wife Joséphine de Beauharnais (Vanessa Kirby). What happens when a man can conquer most of Europe but not his own feelings? Watch and find out.

Just in time for awards season, Killers of the Flower Moon is finally available to stream starting January 12. Martin Scorsese’s epic film is based on David Grann’s 2017 book about a member of the Osage Nation, Mollie Burkhart, who sought to get to the bottom of the deaths in her family. Set in 1920s Oklahoma, a time when many Osage were being killed for the money made from oil on their land, Scorsese’s film follows the relationship between Mollie (played by Lily Gladstone, who won a Golden Globe for her performance) and Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) and what happens when the FBI comes to investigate the Osage deaths. When WIRED named it one of 2023’s best movies , we called it “a feel-bad masterpiece,” and we stand by that.

Can technology determine whether you've found The One? Probably not, but in the latest from writer-director Christos Nikou, an institute run by Duncan (Luke Wilson) claims that it has found the formula for true love anyway—and Anna (Jessie Buckley) wants to figure out if it's real. The institute, you see, has determined that Anna and her boyfriend Ryan (Jeremy Allen White) are a match, but has doubts. While working at the institute, though, she meets Amir (Riz Ahmed) and finds someone who actually might be her match.

Remember Sing Street , that charming indie about a kid in Dublin who starts a band as an escape from his complicated home life? What about Once , that charming indie about a pair that spends a week in Dublin writing songs about their love? If you enjoyed either of those—or if they just sound like something you might enjoy—let us suggest Flora and Son , a charming indie about a mother in Dublin trying to connect with her son through song. Like Sing Street and Once , Flora and Son comes from director John Carney and has all of his signature moves, plus something else: Eve Hewson, who plays the movie's titular mom. She's a force, and she hits all of her musician notes perfectly. Makes sense, she's Bono's daughter.

Here it is, the question everyone will ask when you’re writing about Apple TV+’s new original movie: Do you remember Beanie Babies? If you were born after 2000, the answer is likely no , unless you have a retro toy collector friend or a goofy aunt who has a few of them lying around. The good news is that The Beanie Bubble is for those fans and everyone else too. It’s about a toy salesman named Ty Warner (Zach Galifianakis) who stumbles into the biggest success of his life after he teams up with three women to develop the kind of plushies people just can’t get enough of. Critics have been mixed, but thanks to performances from the likes of Galifianakis, Elizabeth Banks, and Sarah Snook (proving there’s life after Succession ), it’s the kind of sweet dramedy that’s perfect for a night in.

Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry might be one of the most beloved players in American basketball—and he is definitely one of the best players, if not the best player, in the league. He's been named the NBA's Most Valuable Player twice and has won four championship rings. He also has more career three-pointers than anyone in the league. But in the late aughts, he was a kid at a small school, Davidson College, just trying to live up to the potential his coaches saw in him. Underrated , directed by Peter Nicks ( Homeroom ), chronicles that journey, showing how Curry bested the predictions of his own NBA draft (many said he didn't have the size necessary for the league) to become one of the greatest to ever play the game. For basketball fans, it's a must-watch.

One of the pioneering groups in hip hop, the Beastie Boys have a story like no other. For this “live documentary,” filmmaker Spike Jonze filmed Mike Diamond (Mike D) and Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) as they told a crowd at Brooklyn’s Kings Theater about their rise to stardom. Complete with old footage, photos, and stories from the group’s decades-long career, the doc captures just how influential the Beasties have been since they started playing music together as kids in New York City in the late ’70s and early ’80s. It also features some wonderful memories of their third member, Adam “MCA” Yauch, who died in 2012 following a battle with cancer.

This is the one that put Apple TV+ on the map. The movie’s title is an acronym for “child of deaf adults.” It’s the story of Ruby, the only hearing person in a family that includes two deaf parents and one deaf sibling. When Ruby discovers a love of music, she's forced to reconcile her own aspirations with those of her family, who run a small fishing business and often need her to help communicate. Warm and gripping,  CODA  is the kind of movie that will have you cheering and crying at the same time.

In 1985, Michael J. Fox was one of Hollywood’s biggest names as the star of a hit TV show ( Family Ties ) and the year’s highest-grossing movie ( Back to the Future ). Just a few years later, at the age of 29, Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. In  Still , Oscar-winning documentarian Davis Guggenheim offers a poignant portrait of Fox’s personal and professional life, and his journey from teen idol to advocate for a cure.

Mahershala Ali stars alongside, well, Mahershala Ali in this romantic-sci-fi-drama. Yes, it’s all of those things. Cameron (Ali) is a loving husband (to Naomie Harris) and father who, after learning he has a terminal illness, must decide just how far he’ll go to protect his family from having to know the truth, or deal with the devastating aftermath.

Sharper is one of those movies where the less you know about it going in, the better. Just know that no one is what they seem or who they say they are in this neo-noir starring Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan, Justice Smith, and John Lithgow. This twisty little thriller flew largely under the radar when it was released in theaters for a half-second in early 2023.

If you’ve read the  reviews , you know this movie isn’t exactly  good , per se, but if you want to see Captain America (Chris Evans) and a future John Wick–franchise badass (Ana de Armas) fall in love as part of the goofiest premise possible—He’s a farmer! She’s a secret agent!—this is for you. Give this movie a go(sted).

By now, thousands of pop music fans know the Billie Eilish monomyth: Young, slightly punk, slightly goth teenager starts making songs in her brother’s bedroom, puts them online, and becomes one of the biggest pop stars in the world. It’s a great story, but that’s only about a quarter of the tale of Eilish’s ascent to superstar status.  The World’s a Little Blurry  fills in (some of) the blanks. Director R. J. Cutler got amazing access for this film, which chronicles everything from Eilish’s songwriting process with her brother Finneas to her frank talk about her Tourette’s. It’s the kind of music documentary that redefines the music documentary.

“Sundance hit starring Dakota Johnson”s are almost a dime a dozen, but this one, about a young bar/bat mitzvah party-starter is the, ahem, real deal. It also proves that Cooper Raiff—who writes, directs, and stars in the movie—is one to keep your eye on.

Yes, most people already know the story of Macbeth—Scottish lord with an eye toward ruling his country—but not everyone has seen it through the eyes of director Joel Coen. Shot entirely in black and white and starring Denzel Washington as Macbeth and Frances McDormand as his powerful wife, the film was nominated for three Oscars and brought a very new twist onto a classic Shakespearean tale.

Above all else, Louis Armstrong is known as one of the most famous jazz musicians of all time. But he was also a figure in the struggle for equality in America—albeit a complicated one. As director Sacha Jenkins illustrates in this documentary, while Armstrong broke racial barriers in entertainment he also faced accusations that he didn’t stand up as much for civil rights as other performers of his era. Jenkins got access to scores of photographs, clippings, and even recordings Armstrong made of his own conversations for this documentary, and that access provides a much fuller picture of the legendary musician than the world has ever had.

One of the most popular video games of all time,  Tetris  was a phenomenon for Nintendo Game Boy owners in the 1980s. But  Tetris (the movie) is the story of the people who made the game and brought it from the then-Soviet Union to the rest of the world. Part historical dramedy, part espionage flick, the movie doesn’t always hit its marks, but if you’ve never heard the story of how  Tetris  got out from behind the Iron Curtain, it’s worth a watch.

Causeway  kind of came and went when it was released in 2022, but that’s also the sort of movie it is. Focused on a soldier (Jennifer Lawrence) who returns home after suffering a brain injury in Afghanistan, the film from director Lila Neugebauer is about trauma and how people lean on each other to get through it. A worthy watch for the times when you have your own stuff to work through.

Sidney Poitier died in 2022, the same year Apple TV+ released this documentary looking at the actor’s long-running career— In the Heat of the Night ,  Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner —and impact on American culture and politics. With interviews ranging from Spike Lee and Morgan Freeman to Harry Belafonte, the film goes beyond his time in Hollywood, starting with his upbringing in the Bahamas and ending with his massive impact on the civil rights movement and elsewhere.

Best new movies to stream on Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, Max (HBO), and more

March is winding down and, like most months, there are just a few additions to the best movies to stream on Netflix , Hulu, Prime Video , Max (HBO), and other services in the final week of this month. Tthere are still a host of honorees from the 2024 Oscars to catch up on, as well as plenty of other entertaining options.

This week, three new films arrive on this list, with two on Netflix and one on Peacock. The Kathryn Newton movie Lisa Frankenstein is on Peacock, while Netflix adds recent under-the-radar prestige releases The Miracle Club and When You Finish Saving the World  from Sony Pictures Classics and A24, respectively.

Spring is near, but before the weather gets nicer and the outdoors starts beckoning, there are bound to be some cold nights when you'll need to warm up with the best action movies on Netflix right now.

Netflix has invested heavily in its action collection over the past year, but more action movies also means a prolonged scrolling experience to find something worth watching. We did all the grunt work so you can get straight to the fun!

With a well-balanced catalog of movies, Max has cemented its status as one of the top-tier streaming services going into its fourth year. Even more important than the size of its library itself, though, is the variety available on hand between its countless movies.

Naturally, this also means subscribers can movies that run the gamut from sci-fi to documentaries to fantasy, which ensures the platform's broad appeal and accessibility. Still, it can be difficult for newcomers to know where to begin. Thankfully, we've parsed through the deep selection of movies to stream on Max in this monthly updated guide to present some of the best titles available on demand.

The most revelatory aspect of the art of drag is how it lays bare the centrality of performance in our everyday lives. That’s most obvious when it comes to thinking about gender. Wigs, heels and makeup go a long way toward revealing femininity to be a kind of armature deployed as intentionally on the streets as it is on a stage. In “Femme,” Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping’s debut feature, that kernel of truth becomes the anchor for a deliciously vicious London-set revenge thriller.

When Jules (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) steps into the spotlight at a bar as his alter ego, Aphrodite, you can see he’s in his element. With voguing dancers flanking her, Aphrodite is aptly named. She is a goddess of the night. If you saw her lit only by moonlight, you’d be forgiven for being so taken with her grace. But such magic tends to disappear under the humbling fluorescents of a corner store, particularly unkind to drag makeup.

“Is that a bloke?” Jules overhears a friend ask Preston ( George MacKay of “1917”), as Aphrodite stands in line waiting to get a pack of cigarettes. Quietly, in a tight close-up, you see the queen trying to figure out how best to react to Preston’s posturing homophobia. Should she shrink herself into nothing or try to shine as brightly as she’d done on stage?

She opts for the latter. “How can you call me a fag in front of all your friends when I caught you checking me out earlier?” she says. All too quickly the scene devolves into a violent blur. Stripped, kicked and recorded on Preston’s phone throughout the ordeal, Jules is left with nothing. No wig. No dress. No comebacks. No dignity.

Imagine his luck, then, when one day at a bathhouse, Jules spots his assailant (all abs, tats and attitude). In a split second, whatever self-pity had taken a hold of him following the attack is gone. He pursues Preston (who, it seems, doesn’t recognize his victim), hops in his car and kicks off the erotic, tense tête à tête that structures this slick, stylish queer neo-noir.

Scouring the web for sex videos of outed masc “straight” boys, Jules begins concocting a plan. If he can get Preston on camera, maybe he can finally find closure, find a way to make good on the taunting line that first egged this loutish guy into senseless violence. Pulsing with Adam Janota Bzowski’s drone-like synth score, lit by James Rhodes’ neon-tinged cinematography and cut with flair by Selina Macarthur, that scene is but one moment when “Femme” firmly establishes itself as a bold self-assured debut.

Already a keen performer, Jules quickly becomes everything a closeted guy would want. Using his coyness as his most versatile seductive power, Jules (and, in turn, Stewart-Jarrett) nails the role of homme fatale the film requires. That includes dressing “normal” for his dinner “dates” with Preston and playing into the fantasies he knows excite him.

These late night encounters begin with a wild kind of violent, volatile chemistry. But they soon become more tender. Away from his mates, Preston is much softer than he purports to be when drowning in oversized sweatshirts and hardened grins. And armed with such a protective partner (or maybe so close to recording his revenge sex tape), Jules is finally able to climb out of the depression that had derailed him.

The question throughout the film, of course, is whether this budding relationship is or could be real. These are two young men who move in worlds that constantly demand that they perform. Both are experts at code-switching and calibrating their moves, their words and even their bodies in any given context. The two begin by offering one another versions of themselves they can’t show others. And as they each wonder whether such vulnerability will be anything but a liability, we’re left to wonder instead whether film and romance alike can end in anything but violence.

To watch Stewart-Jarrett (a glittering steel blade) and MacKay (a hardened fist blooming) play this pair of wounded would-be lovers is to witness two actors walking on a razor’s edge. Their characters’ mercurial motivations are often violently splintering, to the point where you’re never sure what, if anything, is authentic after all.

Within that funhouse mirror of an erotic-thriller premise, “Femme” proves to be a gorgeously mounted meditation on queer and queered performance. As Freeman and Ng’s film arrives at its necessarily cruel, bloody ending — as surprising as it is inevitable — you’re left as torn as its central pair. Bruised, yes. But perhaps all the stronger for it.

'The Birdcage' 

Armand Goldman (Robin Williams) is a gay Miami club owner whose son Val (Dan Futterman) has just gotten engaged to girlfriend Barbara Keely (Calista Flockhart). Val wants Armand to meet Barbara's parents, who are notoriously straitlaced and prejudiced against the LGBTQ+ community — and also Republican. Armand pretends to be straight while hiding his relationship with life partner Albert (Nathan Lane) so his son's engagement can go off without a hitch. Of course, that's all easier said than done, as Armand soon finds out. 

'Gone in 60 Seconds'

Car thief Kip Raines (Giovanni Ribisi) steals 50 cars for a California gangster. He ends up in hot water when he leads police back to his crew's stores of cars. As he's failed to fulfill his mission, his brother Randall "Memphis Raines" (Nicolas Cage) has to step in and steal 50 cars in exchange for Kip's life. But he doesn't do it alone – he has to bring his old gang back together to complete the mission, all while working against the clock, a rival gang, and the police.

The Best Movies of 2024, So Far

Though some high-profile duds may have given the impression that the year in film is off to a rocky start, our list of the best movies of 2024 so far reveals a wealth of worthy, (mostly) smaller fare released since January. Some are available to stream, while others are playing in theaters (or soon will be). We’ll keep updating this list all year, so be sure to check back in the coming months for more recommendations of what to watch in between Traitors seasons . 

The End We Start From

Killing Eve breakout Jodie Comer (who recently won a Tony for her staggering solo performance in Prima Facie ) further proves her talent in this somber but never lugubrious survival drama from Mahalia Belo. As floodwaters overtake London, a new mother must head north in search of safety and sustainability while a nation credibly collapses around her. Finely observed and avoidant of melodrama, The End We Start From is a thoughtful, occasionally profound manifestation of a collective anxiety, the shared feeling that the fabric of the world is rapidly fraying to a breaking point. Belo steers through all that fear and calamity and finds something like hope on the other side. 

The Promised Land

Nikolaj Arcel ’s robust, lushly mounted film is an old-fashioned epic, a settler Western unfolding on the barren heaths of Denmark rather than the American frontier. Mads Mikkelsen is sternly magnetic as Ludvig Kahlen, a longtime soldier seeking the favor of the Danish crown by cultivating a harsh landscape long thought to be an impossible wilderness. Through that struggle, Kahlen cobbles together a ragtag crew of waifs and cast-offs, and goes to bitter battle with a preening local lord played with perfect movie-villain sliminess by Simon Bennebjerg. Neither subtle nor overstated, The Promised Land reverently restores old forms to past luster, while paying stirring tribute to the resolve and fortitude of the simple potato.

How to Have Sex

A spring-break-esque holiday in Crete, booze-soaked and sun-baked, takes a grave turn in Molly Manning Walker ’s striking debut feature . As a young woman who experiences a dire violation of consent, Mia McKenna-Bruce is a revelation, intricately mapping her character’s struggle to process, and name, what’s happened to her. Manning Walker stages a party gone to ruin with bracing realism, resisting sensationalism by leading with compassion instead of alarmism. True to its title, How to Have Sex is instructive in at least one crucial way: It yanks certain predatory behavior into the light, refusing to let it hide in supposed gray areas.

Dune: Part Two

Denis Villeneuve ’s massive sequel mightily improves on its predecessor by infusing the franchise’s stunning aesthetics with actual plot and meaning. The empty beauty of the first film now keens with megalomaniac prophecy and religious fervor; the ministrations of a universe-spanning empire are brought terribly to bear on our revolutionary heroes and their worrisome messiah. Dune: Part Two functions equally well as either a bridge to further films or as the closer of a two-part franchise. It’s an all-too-rare IP blockbuster that is sturdy on its own feet while leaving open a door to further grandiose adventure.  

A true-story tearjerker of the highest order, James Hawes ’s rousing film is a memory piece about an elderly Nicholas Winton—a stockbroker who organized the rescue of nearly 700 Jewish children as the Nazis approached Czechoslovakia in 1938—recalling his boggling feat 50 years later. It’s a process movie too, as we watch a younger Winton use various bureaucratic and legal maneuvers to ensure safe-ish passage for each group of refugees. Anthony Hopkins continues his recent run of terrific work as the older Winton, crafting a portrait of heroism as a humble act of decency, of recognizing a mounting tragedy and simply doing what can be done to stop it. A worthy message for this or any era.

The Shadowless Tower

This quiet but sweeping drama, from director Zhang Lü, is a delicate romance, a sweet story of unexpected friendship, and a softly heartbreaking family reunion. It is also, in Zhang’s elegant framing, a winsome tribute to the old quarters of Beijing, their narrow streets and hole-in-the-wall eateries. Xin Baiqing, playing a rumpled, middle-aged food critic, is the soulful center of the film, while Huang Yao gamely plays the young photographer who coaxes him out of his stasis. Zhang’s modest narrative gradually builds toward a poignant conclusion, capturing the sound and sensation of time swiftly passing.

Another of Alice Rohrwacher ’s folksy curios that are actually saying something rather deep about modern-day Italy, La Chimera concerns unlicensed excavators of antiquity, a band of rogues who dig around in the ancient soil to see what evidence of history they might find. Among them is a British man, Arthur ( Josh O’Connor, speaking almost entirely in Italian), who is mourning a lost love. As La Chimera whispers and clatters along, the film contemplates what it means to go about the business of living when we are forever surrounded by reminders of the dead—people who came before us and made their own music, had their own romances, and left their own trail of debris before becoming it themselves. (In US theaters March 29.)

Housekeeping for Beginners

Macedonian Australian filmmaker Goran Stolevski ’s third feature is a rambling, sometimes bruising found-family drama about a home shared by an interconnected crew of misfits in Skopje, North Macedonia’s capitol city. The great Anamaria Marinca plays a health care worker who finds herself taking on the role of den mother following a tragedy, working to formalize some of the bonds holding her motley clan together. Among other things, Housekeeping for Beginners is a sober look at the realities of Roma life in the Balkans, especially for those contending with the additional stigma of being queer in a bigoted society. Stolevski—one of the most exciting emerging directors on the world scene—manages a controlled chaos, keeping his film loose and lively while driving toward a stirring finish. (In US theaters April 5.)

How do i connect an indoor antenna to a tv.

In order to connect an indoor antenna to a TV, you'll need to ensure your display includes an integrated digital tuner. This is standard on all the best TVs , but you might need to purchase a separate digital tuner if you own a very old set.

To hook up your antenna to your TV's digital tuner all you need is a coaxial cable . Some antennas come with this cord, but you'll need to buy a separate one if it's not included. If you want to place your antenna in the window or a space away from your TV, you should measure the distance beforehand to see if the cord is long enough.

Finally, if your antenna uses an amplifier, you'll also have to plug it into a power outlet. 

What channels can I get with an antenna?

Antennas pick up over-the-air broadcast channels that are available in your area. This typically means local networks like NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, and a few dozen other stations. Channel availability, however, can drastically differ depending on whether your community is more rural or urban. 

One way to check available channels in your community is through the AntennaWeb tool . Just enter your address in the search bar, and a list of channels that can be picked up in your area will appear in the results.

Do you need a TV antenna with an amplifier?

Not all TV antennas include amplifiers, and in most cases, you'll be fine without one. However, the farther away you live from a TV station tower, the more you may benefit from having one. Amplified TV antennas are designed to help increase signal strength, so they're a better choice if you live in a rural area where reception isn't as good.

On the other hand, amplified antennas often require a power source, meaning more pesky cables around your TV, and they can also amplify noise, which can sometimes make reception worse than it would be without an amp. If you live in an area closer to broadcast towers, a non-amplified option may serve you just as well and reduce the number of wires you need to manage.

What are the limitations of using an antenna?

Unlike cable or the best live TV streaming services , antennas can only pick up local channels. If you want to see content from cable networks like ESPN, AMC, FX, Disney Channel, and more, an antenna won't work. 

Antenna reception can also be limited by external factors in your area. This means the number of trees outside your home or nearby buildings could impact your viewing. The location of broadcast towers in your area, the weather, and your room's shape and design can also impact your reception. In other words, the performance you get from an antenna can be more finicky compared to cable and streaming. 

And unlike pay-TV options, an antenna on its own won't let you record shows, though some external DVRs can be bought separately to save antenna broadcasts. Some TVs also lack the ability to display a full on-screen guide for antenna stations. This means you have to go through each channel manually. But, some newer smart TVs now include integrated guides for antenna playback.

What video quality can I get with an antenna?

Most over-the-air broadcasts currently offer high-definition (HD) picture quality with either 720p or 1080i resolution. This matches the resolution that most cable and live TV streaming services provide. 

With that said, even when using the same resolution, antenna-based broadcasts can actually look better than cable. Cable tends to compress video and audio quality more than antennas, so over-the-air TV through an antenna will typically provide improved quality. That is, as long as your reception is strong.

Over the next few years, some over-the-air stations will begin broadcasting in 4K (Ultra HD) and high dynamic range (HDR) through the new ATSC 3.0 standard, also called NextGenTV. NextGenTV broadcasts are already available in several major cities like Pittsburgh and Phoenix and continue to enter additional markets. 

Current digital TV antennas can pick up NextGenTV signals without issues, so you don't need to buy a specific 4K antenna. However, you will need an ATSC 3.0 tuner or a 4K TV with an integrated ATSC 3.0 tuner. Only select TVs released over the last few years have these built-in.
