Have You Made Any New Year’s Resolutions?

Do you find it easy or difficult to set goals and achieve them?

By Shannon Doyne

Are you using the New Year as a starting point for any changes you’d like to make to your life, routines or attitudes? If so, how will you motivate yourself to keep your resolutions? How do you expect your efforts to go this year?

In the Opinion essay “ One Resolution You Might Just Keep ,” Garret Keizer, a poet, memoirist and editor, contemplates the whole point of making annual resolutions in light of his own 70th birthday. The essay begins:

If resolution makers wanted a patron saint, they could do worse than Samuel Johnson (1709-84), a lifelong resolver and by his own admission a lifelong failure at keeping his resolutions. Reading his diaries, we may sigh in recognition as time after time — at the New Year, at Easter and on his birthday — Johnson renews his intentions to rise early, to be more studious, to be more moderate in his intake of food and drink, and laments his neglect of those same intentions in the year past. “I have now spent 55 years in resolving,” he wrote on his birthday in 1764, “having from the earliest time almost that I can remember been forming schemes of a better life. I have done nothing; the need of doing therefore is pressing, since the time of doing is short.” I have these words in mind as I greet a New Year that will mark my 70th birthday by yet again resolving, as Johnson did, to rise earlier, resist hurtful thoughts and keep a journal. I’ll also resolve to check my email less compulsively and my blood pressure more often. To reduce the amount of sodium in my diet. To be a more faithful friend and a more attentive parent and spouse. To listen more than I talk. Over the years Johnson made readjustments to his program, especially to his rising time, a perennial challenge for someone prone to indolence, chronic depression and late hours. “I have, all my life long, been lying till noon,” he remarked to a dinner host, “yet I tell all young men, and tell them with great sincerity, that nobody who does not rise early will ever do any good.” Those young men (and women too, several of whom he helped toward publication) must have laughed among themselves at all that their habitually late-sleeping mentor had managed to accomplish in spite of his own advice. They would have cited his elegant Rambler essays, his groundbreaking edition of Shakespeare’s plays and his monumental “A Dictionary of the English Language,” remnants of which survive in any dictionary you’re likely to pick up today. It’s now commonplace in English literature courses to speak of the mid-to-late 18th century as “the age of Johnson.” His contemporaries would not have been surprised. For Johnson, however, the critical question was not whether he’d accomplished great things but whether he’d accomplished them in proportion to his talents and his limited time. He was hyperconscious of mortality — on his watch was engraved “The night cometh, when no man can work” — and painfully frustrated by his seeming inability to keep the simplest promise to himself. Like almost everyone I know, he felt he should be accomplishing much more than he did.

Students, read the entire article, then tell us:

Were you reminded of anyone you know as you read about Samuel Johnson’s concern for how he used his time and potential, as well as his tendency to give advice he himself didn’t follow? Were you reminded of yourself?

Mr. Keizer says of Johnson, “Like almost everyone I know, he felt he should be accomplishing much more than he did.” How does that statement make you feel? Do you think most people, even the most accomplished among us, feel like they have not done enough or that there are changes they need to make to improve their lives?

What are some of your short- and long-term goals? Which of your habits will help you reach them? What do you think you might have to change about your life to make your dreams come true?

Do you wait for significant events — the New Year, birthdays or the beginning of the school year — to set new goals? Or do you prefer to make small and incremental changes throughout the year?

What advice would you give someone who is frustrated by their slow progress in reaching their goals, or who struggles to keep their resolutions? Why?

In a related Opinion essay , Tish Harrison Warren, an Anglican priest, writes:

The point of resolutions shouldn’t be to add another task to our busy lives or another brick on the crushing and cruel burden to ‘do better.’ The point is that renewal is always possible, and with a large dollop of grace we can freely try new things; we can continue to grow and change.

What do you think about these ideas? Does making resolutions remind you that you can always change and grow? You might also read the suggestions the author has compiled from people who offer ways one might cultivate spiritual changes at this time of year. Which piece of advice most speaks to you?

Life Kit's Resolution Planner: 40 ideas and tips to start your New Year

What do you want to accomplish this year? Scroll through Life Kit's expert guides for practical and inspiring ways to grow in 2023.

Ah, the new year. It's a time to sketch out your goals and think about the roadmap to get there.

Life Kit has curated a list of some of our best episodes to help set you up for success in 2023. They include practical guidance (like how to pick a birth control or ask for a raise ), forward-thinking advice (like how to save for retirement or freeze your eggs ) and tips on how to live more mindfully (like how to reduce food waste or set boundaries ).

It might feel hard to start a new habit, but as BJ Fogg, a behavior scientist at Stanford and author of Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything , told Life Kit in a 2020 interview , "it's easier to create habits and change than most people think, and it's faster than most people think. It can even be fun if you do it in the right way."

The key is to understand how behavior change happens. You've got to have the motivation, the ability to do the behavior and a prompt, says Fogg. "And the prompt is anything that reminds you to do this behavior now. And when those three things come together at the same moment, a behavior happens."

So go on, pick a resolution that's achievable — but also bold and aspirational. We've got 40+ ideas for you to choose from. Here's to a stronger, more confident you in 2023.

New Year’s Resolutions for Writers (2023 Edition)

new years resolutions

The holiday cheer is peaking right now, and we at LivingWriter hope that everyone is having a blast with their vacation! After the year-long grind for your first drafts or final manuscripts or your month-long escapade with November’s NaNoWriMo , you deserve this break.

new years resolution celebrate

As the year comes to a close, we usually think of the new one that’s coming. What does 2023 have in store for you? What great things can you achieve for the next 12 months of your writing career?

To prepare for the next year, we have prepared 8 New Year’s resolutions for writers who are going into 2023 with hopes and promises of a better writing career.

2023 New Year’s Resolutions for Writers

Try a new genre.

You’ve spent 2022 wearing rose-colored glasses, writing the most beautiful romance between an artist and lawyer, or ex-convict and engineer, or singer and fan. Whichever pairing you thought up must have had everything work out for them (eventually). However, what if you switched gears for 2023?

You might be interested in exploring the idea of an artist becoming a lawyer, or an engineer/ex-convict clearing his name, or the real-life interactions of singers and their fans. Perhaps the third idea makes you shift from fiction to non-fiction entirely!

If you feel like you’ve emptied your baskets on your genre, maybe it’s time to shift into a new one. 2023 may be the year for you to see if you might also hit it big outside of your comfort zone.

Meet Other Authors

The writing community is a vibrant group of passionate writers, and you should be able to find patches of those people near you. Interacting with like-minded people is a great way to take a break from writing, or take inspiration from them.

new year's resolution writers group

Hang around local bookstores and other reading venues to meet people who share the same love for books and stories as you do, and share ideas about your next novel or simply socialize as people with common interests.

You will find experience and advice fresh from veterans in the field, or maybe you will get to impart your fair share of tips and tricks of the trade to a less-experienced bunch. Either arrangement benefits everyone at the end of the day, so make it one of your New Year’s resolutions to meet other writers like yourself.

Do Good Research

The common advice is to “write what you know,” and it’s a piece of perfectly harmless advice if you’re trying to will a story into existence. However, simply writing from memory and stock knowledge will not suffice for another year anymore. You have to improve upon your current well of knowledge and expand it.

Maybe you were able to wing your previous stories without much rigor, but research is a crucial part of the writing process. Even though you may be writing fiction, you cannot hope to write an internally consistent fictional world if you don’t inform your worldbuilding with accurate real-life knowledge.

Of course, the rigor required to do research may vary on your genre, but that’s not an excuse to skimp on it at all. Readers are vicious: they will know if you don’t do your research.

Read (Even More) Widely

‘Tis the age-old saying to read as much as you write. After all, how will you learn new things and understand new concepts if you don’t read? However, for 2023, you should one-up 2022.

new year's resolution reading

If you read 10 books in 2022, make it 15 in 2023. If you read 15, make it 20. Better yet, read one for each of the 52 weeks of 2023. Nothing else in the world makes a better writer than reading religiously.

Of course, you also need to make sure that you are reading productively. Take notes of certain styles and plot developments that you can study to improve upon your own.

Understand that You Will Write Badly

Our minds are not machines that can readily spit out amazing stories and words every time we ask of them. Most especially during the first draft of your manuscript, your mind will definitely screw up many times you’ll almost always hate the first draft.

However, at this point of the writing process, the most important thing is to get the story down. You don’t need it to be perfect the first time around, and we say that it shouldn’t be, anyway. Trying to make it perfect on the first draft is grueling, if not torturous. So much time is wasted on editing the story before it’s even finished. You will end up hating your story before you write the last paragraph.

If you internalize this 2023 that you can only produce masterpieces by iterating on your manuscript over and over, you will end up with a healthier and more productive writing process that has a better chance of getting a manuscript done and ready to be published.

Celebrate Progress as Much as Results

Tangent to the New Year’s resolutions above, you might often value the opinions of your readers. Of course, that’s not an inherently bad metric to use as a basis for your performance as a writer. However, not all your books and stories will be appreciated by everyone.

Thinking about the readers is important, and it is part of the writing process. However, as a writer, you shouldn’t place their opinions on a pedestal. The most important part of writing is the fact that you are writing down a story that you want to tell. That, in and of itself, is worthy of celebration as much as what others think of your stories.

Write, Even When You Want To

Even if you are a pantser , a professional writer does not just write when inspiration strikes. As one of the most important New Year’s resolutions for 2023, you should write, especially when you don’t want to. Writing is still work, and words don’t manifest themselves in your draft if you don’t put in the effort.

You need to understand that good writing is not the first one that you put down to words, but the one that you worked hard to become good. So write, even when you want to.

Use LivingWriter to Make Your Life Easier

Of course, we at LivingWriter hope that one of your New Year’s resolutions would include you trying out LivingWriter for 2023. We offer quite a lot of features: we have Outlines and Chapters, Plot Boards, Story Elements, Research Boards, templates… You get the idea: we have it all here, and we’re still growing!

nanowrimo livingwriter freeform grid

Coming from us, it might be a bit biased but LivingWriter is truly a living platform that’s perfect for writers. With our amazing array of features, we make sure that every writer who touches our platform has everything they’ll ever need and more. So that all you need to do is work and finish that manuscript.

Refill the Creative Well

As mentioned above, our inspiration will not always be there. However, you shouldn’t be like a sitting duck waiting for it to come back. Instead, you should also try to actively seek it out.

You can refill your creative well through a variety of ways, and most of them revolve around taking a break. Because, maybe, that’s what you also need. Resting is important, and it should be one of your New Year’s resolutions this year.

Spend the Next Year with LivingWriter

We hope that 2022 had been an amazing year for everyone. 12 months of writing stories, plotting character developments, and productively publishing novels for everyone to read. However, as life goes on, so do the years, and 2022 is now closing its curtains to open the doors and windows of opportunities for 2023.

Now that 2022 is well and gone, let’s welcome 2023 with the renewed vigor to write as many stories as we can, and write with more gusto than before!

Don’t forget to try LivingWriter this 2023, too!

33 New Year’s resolution ideas for 2023

Welcome to Headway’s 2023 New Year’s resolution list! Think of this as a pick-n-mix: choose a New Year’s resolution that suits you, leave the ones that don’t resonate, and start working towards a fresh year!

#1 Make time to read more

Whenever you think of improving your life, you typically think of learning and leisure. Well, reading falls under both of those! Thus, the first resolution on our list is to read more . Reading can boost creativity, expand your knowledge, and provide new perspectives.  It can be challenging to find time to read, amongst other responsibilities. This is why here at Headway, we want to support you on this journey. With the Headway app , you can read or listen to the main ideas outlined in any book in just 15 minutes. You can also take advantage of fun challenges and streaks that will help you stick to your resolution for longer than a few weeks. And the best part is that you can choose from thousands of must-read books on our app. Start your year on the right track with Headway!

#2 Implement more stress-relieving activities

Stress can have all sorts of impacts on our physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. Let’s face it: life isn’t supposed to be all about stress. So, why not make it a priority to ease those unwanted feelings in 2023? If you’re looking to read more about how stress impacts humans and what to do about it, check out How to Stop Worrying and Start Living by Dale Carnegie.

#3 Find a balance between work and play

Working towards your career is fun and exciting, but be mindful of how much energy you give it. Try finding a balance between work and play this coming year, as it might be exactly what you’re looking for.

#4 Cook a new meal each week

We all want to eat nutritiously, so take a more straightforward approach by learning new recipes. Challenge yourself to make a new meal every week or month. If you’re unsure what foods to incorporate into your lifestyle, read or listen to insights from James Collins’ The Energy Plan , a book about eating to boost energy and performance.

#5 Learn a new skill

Learning is fun (and you can’t convince us otherwise). Make 2023 the year you take up that new hobby you’ve been thinking about. Maybe you’ve loved the idea of rollerblading, learning how to play an instrument, or getting crafty.

#6 Make time for friends

Between families, a job, and managing your home; it’s common for friends to be the last on your to-do list. However, maintaining friendships isn’t as difficult as we may believe. Try booking small activities or phone calls to catch up with friends in a way that is doable for you both.

#7 Invest in yourself

Have you got an idea that is burning to come out? Have you been neglecting your own needs to please those around you? Whether learning to love yourself or finally starting that passion project, make your new resolution to invest in yourself. Everything is Figureoutable by Marie Forleo is a great book to explore for breaking down these big goals into manageable steps.

#8 Give one compliment a day

A simple and kind gesture can go far in life. If you’re looking for tinier resolutions this year, aim to give one compliment daily.

#9 Find new ways to support climate change

It’s not too late to make eco-friendly changes in your life. Task yourself with finding new ways to support the planet, such as using less single-use plastic or buying fewer clothes.

image

#10 Practise gratitude

Consider making a gratitude jar for a New Year’s resolution. Every time you think of something you’re grateful for, write it down and put it in the jar. Soon enough, you’ll have a whole pot of gratitude for days you’re feeling down.

#11 Practice good financial habits

Have you let your finances go these last few months? Let’s get back on track by buying intentionally, saving more, and using money wisely. Listen to key insights from Get Good with Money by Tiffany Aliche on the Headway app for simple steps to stress-free finances.

#12 Be mindful of how you use social media

Put your hand up if you got stuck in a TikTok scroll this week. Sounds relatable! Social media can be so much fun, but it also has downsides. Use the start of 2023 to set boundaries with your social media accounts and take more time offline.

#13 Work on making your living space more welcoming

Your home is the place you should feel warm, safe, and comforted. If yours lacks that magical feeling, check out Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life, to discover how feng shui can change the feel of your home .

#14 Work on your listening skills

While communication is a fundamental life skill, many forget this includes listening. Work on your listening skills to deepen your connections for your New Year’s resolution. You’re Not Listening by Kate Murphy is a good place to start understanding the importance of listening.

#15 Give more hugs

Nothing beats a warm hug from a loved one. In fact, it’s well-known that physical touch benefits our well-being, making it even more important to hug your loved ones the next time you see them.

#16 Consider therapy

Going to therapy has become much less of a taboo subject. Many people appreciate it as a tool to learn how to care for one’s mental health and prevent a downward spiral.

#17 Do something you loved as a child

Sometimes in adulthood, we lose touch with our playful side. 2023 may be the year you reconnect with your inner child and spend more time doing the things you love.

#18 Give to charity

Giving to others is an excellent way to spread kindness and one of the best New Year’s resolutions. Consider giving away clothes you no longer need or donating what you can to a local charity.

#19 Upcycle your clothing

Not only can it be a fun activity with friends, but using your old clothes is a great way to reduce waste. You can listen to bite-sized learnings from The Conscious Closet by Elizabeth L. Cline on the Headway app to learn more about clothing and the planet.

#20 Go somewhere without your phone

Challenge yourself to be more present by going somewhere without your phone. Perhaps it’s to your local town or a whole weekend away. Catherine Price’s How to Break Up with Your Phone is an excellent read on this subject.

image

#21 Practise kindness towards yourself and others

It’s free to be kind to others, and that includes yourself too. Kindness is crucial to building good connections and boosting your self-esteem.

#22 Try going vegan or vegetarian

Cutting back on meat and dairy products is good for the planet and our bodies. Join the numerous people doing Veganuary, following a vegan lifestyle for January. It can be a great way to discover new recipes too!

#23 Cut back on alcohol in January

Like Veganuary, many people partake in ‘dry Jan,’ a month without alcohol. Looking for a challenge to kick off the new year? This is the one for you.

#24 Start working on your business idea

This may not resonate with everyone, but if you’ve been sitting on an idea for a while, it’s time to back yourself! If you’re unsure how your business idea will work, take notes from Will It Fly? By Pat Flynn.

#25 Make 2023 the year of discipline

If you’ve got some time off this new year, use this to organize things you’ve been putting off. It is a great way to start the year off fresh.

#26 It’s time to prioritize self-care

Self-care has been a significant theme in 2022 resolution lists, and 2023 is no different. We’re encouraging you to prioritize self-care to prevent burnout and make resolutions this year that support your health.

#27 Confidence looks great on you, so why not wear it more?

Has 2022 been hard on you? Make this year the best yet by investing in yourself and building your confidence .

#28 Solo travel

Solo traveling can be an exciting way to explore new places and meet new people. If you’re up for the challenge, start your year by planning your first trip!

#29 Try your hand at investing

If you’re looking for better ways to spend your money, The Little Book of Common Sense Investing by John Bogle is a fantastic way to understand the investing world and make your money go further.

#30 Make a fun 2023 playlist

If you’re stuck for New Year’s resolution ideas, this one is for music lovers. Make a playlist for 2023 and set a positive tone for the year ahead.

image

#31 Slow down your meal times

Make every moment count, including meal times. Practice mindful eating for a more enjoyable dining experience. This practice helps you savor the eating experience by tuning into the colors, smells, tastes, and textures. Although it isn’t strictly a guide to mindful eating techniques, Mindless Eating by Brian Wansink, Ph.D., considers taking intentional action around when, why, how, and what you eat.

#32 Watch a new documentary

Learning is our bread and butter, so we love the idea of this new resolution. There are so many documentaries to choose from, so you’ll quickly find something that interests you!

#33 Stick to your resolutions

Ok, so it’s not an actual resolution, but doing your best to stick to your New Year’s goals might transform your life. If you struggle to pick up new habits or learn, check out the core learnings from Make It Stick on the Headway app.

How to stick to your New Year’s resolutions?

Coming up with New Year’s resolutions can be motivating and a great way to kick off 2023. Understandably though, many people need help to sustain the momentum of new habits as the months progress. With some support and guidance, you can maintain these hobbies, habits, and lifestyle changes. These are our top tips to make resolutions this year and stick to them:

Make it specific: Many New Year’s resolutions fall through because they are vague. Whether you want to eat better or read more, set a measurable goal of cooking one vegetarian meal a week or listening to key points on the Headway app for 10 minutes daily.

Schedule time to learn about your new resolutions this year: Read about them, watch tutorials, and plan how to start. Many find it helpful to have a clear picture of what they want to achieve.

Be realistic : You’re not going to do every one of our New Year’s resolution examples. Instead, pick five that resonate with you and be realistic with your time. Which goals are most important to you? Which one are you more likely to be motivated to achieve even after a few months?

Keep at it: Building new habits comes down to commitment and consistency. Making your goal a regular occurrence will make it easier to stick to. For example, if you want to increase the number of books you’re reading, try waking up 15 minutes earlier to read or listen to some insights on the Headway app.

Final thoughts

New Year’s resolutions don’t have to be complicated. Choosing tinier resolutions this year might make your New Year’s goals more achievable.

If you want to learn more about your chosen resolution (or simply to read more), you can listen and learn on the go with Headway . Sessions as little as 15 minutes can teach you the core insights of a book and get you started on your aspiration. We hope our New Year’s resolution list has inspired you to prioritize bite-sized goals that spark joy in your life as you enter the new year!

What are the top 5 New Year’s resolutions?

Although many are opting for tinier resolutions this year, the most popular New Year’s goals include exercising, losing weight, changing their eating habits, practicing better financial habits, and working towards a career.

How many New Year’s resolutions can you have?

You can have as many New Year’s resolutions as you wish. However, if you want to follow through with them, it’s best to pick a couple of realistic aspirations.

What are good New Year’s resolutions?

The best New Year’s resolutions are the ones that suit your unique needs. For example, if you work a lot, you may enjoy using the Headway app to read more and practice self-care. Alternatively, you can enjoy establishing your business idea.

New Year’s Writing Resolutions: 6 of My Favorite Tips for 2023

writing skills

Want more proven-in-the-lab techniques for achieving your writing resolutions this year? Join PRSA and Ann Wylie at one of our 2023 Master Classes . You’ll learn to write messages that reach more readers and get the word out. Plus: You’ll get feedback from Ann and your colleagues in live coaching and editing sessions.

I’m a poor resolver. For many years, my New Year’s Resolution was “I resolve not to resolve,” which made me a bit of a Grinch at New Year’s Day parties.

But if you’ve resolved to become a better writer this year, here’s help — six of my favorite 2023 writing resolutions to make today:

  • Make it a metaphor.

It’s tempting to call metaphor the magic wand of a writer’s repertoire, the Penn and Teller of the page.

Metaphor has the power to persuade far better than literal language. It lets you say in five words what would otherwise take five paragraphs to explain. It makes readers’ brains light up, helps them think more broadly about your message — even (ahem!) gives the illusion that the communicator is more attractive.

  • Do your homework.

“Without great reporting, a story is like one big comb-over,” says Ann Hull, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The Washington Post . “You can see it from the third paragraph.”

Too many PR pieces don’t even attempt to hide the bald spot.

Have you been relying on the deck, an email exchange or a 5-Ws interview to craft a compelling story? You probably need to make a date with your BFF and research assistant Google for some solid background research as well.

Get goods at getting the goods.

  • Think Outside the Pyramid.

The feature-style story structure has been proven in the lab to increase readership, understanding, memory and satisfaction. The inverted pyramid has been proven in the lab to reduce these things.

Let’s make 2023 the year we stop it using this 178-year-old hierarchical blurtation of facts. OK? Please?

  • Stop writing about “us and our stuff.”

Call it selfish empathy. Or maybe narcissistic altruism.

The more you focus on the reader and the reader’s needs, the more you’ll draw readers into your message and move them to act.

The more you drone on and on about your organization and its products, services, programs and ideas, the less readers will read what you want them to read and do what you want them to do.

So what is the actual goal of your message again?

  • Don’t stop at the subject line.

The subject line is only one of four elements your recipients use to decide whether to open your email, delete without reading or put your message in the spam filter.

Are you crafting powerful preheaders, preview panes and from lines? Or are you ignoring the other 75% of elements that convince recipients to open?

  • Borrow a tip from The New York Times .

The most common length of a quote in the Times is seven words, plus attribution.

How long are your quotes? Would they be twice as good if they were half (or one-tenth) as long?

Turn lame quotes into snappy soundbites.

Resolve to be a better writer this year …

Follow through on these resolutions, and you’ll soon be reaching more readers and moving them to act.

Happy New Year!

Loved the word “blurtation,” which I assume was a combination of recitation and blurting. Nice word choice!

I really like the advice under ” Stop writing about us and our stuff”. I didn’t realize how important it is to draw your reader in with words that are directed towards them and captivate them to continue reading, they will be more inclined to want to read your piece. So it is definitely worth it to try and stray away from writing about yourself and try to focus more on the readers needs. Thank you for this great advice!

Struggling to keep New Year's resolutions? Here's how to actually set doable ones for 2023.

When choosing something to promise, we tend to forget the resolution must be accompanied by a plan to do or not do something. It’s that simple.

Where did the tradition of making a New Year’s resolution come from?

It’s an ancient practice. And the celebrations that once went along with turning the old year into the new are not only ancient but often dangerous.

For instance, the Danes jumped off chairs to "leap" into the new year. In Spain, the frivolity involved eating 12 grapes at or before bedtime.

In contemporary times, some celebrate the new year by eating black-eyed peas, if you can stand them. We also drink bubbly and find someone to kiss as the clock strikes midnight.

Pace yourself. We have time.

Our holiday observances often include partying into the wee hours, a practice some law enforcement folks call amateur night on the roads.

This is because many people don’t know how to pace themselves. Sadly, we’ve all been there.

It’s not likely many celebrants will change their habits and play it safe with doable resolutions this New Year’s Eve.

Yet, we can try to get real in one aspect. It’s time for each of us to think long and hard when we set a New Year’s resolution.

The BEST 2023 Predictions: Musk kills Twitter, Kanye babbles, DeSantis labeled a toad

Year after year, many of us make a promise we can’t keep, even if we are clear-headed at decision time.

Realistically, how many of us can shed hundreds of pounds in a year? Is it likely we will successfully reinvent ourselves to become nicer or more gracious? Is it possible to turn over a new leaf and make measurable improvements in 365 days? Can anyone pay off all their credit cards and become free of debt in the new year?

Can you remember your 2022 resolutions?

We know this because it’s certain very few of us remember what we promised for 2022. I know I can’t recall any resolution I’ve made over the years.

How about if we each resolve to set doable resolutions for 2023, ones that can improve our lives and the lives of others? We might have a shot at success if we put more thought into creating the resolution.

What in the world will 2023 bring?: Our USA TODAY Opinion team has wishes – and fears.

Let’s start with some simple commitments. We can promise to clean out the garage regularly, learn a foreign language, delete hundreds of ridiculous cellphone photos, go out weekly with friends, plant a garden, rescue a shelter pet, wash Mom’s car once a month or clean out the refrigerator.

These resolutions might not sound all that impressive. But if we get real with our commitments, we will have something to celebrate.

Let's start small

After all these years of meaningless resolutions, I’m starting with the basics for 2023. I hereby commit to getting somewhat familiar with my own kitchen so I can try cooking, drink more water every day and consume less sugar and carbs.

Or these might be acceptable solid resolutions for me. Watch fewer YouTube videos; turn off the cellphone at funerals; keep researching my ancestry; make thrift shop purchases and stop buying new and shiny; quit moaning over the loss of the local Dillard’s store; purchase and read every book written by a friend or relative and be grateful for what I have. I basically must often stop to smell the roses.

At the end of next year, the success rate in making changes by setting believable resolutions can be impressive.

Ditch the pressure: Rethink your resolutions for the new year by making intentions instead

Oh, wait. It will be hard for me to smell the roses anytime soon since I killed two backyard rose bushes this past spring.

Guess I need to promise to move plant a garden higher up on the resolution list.

Happy new year!

Short Essay: New Year Resolution

Writing a New Year’s resolution essay provides an excellent opportunity for self-reflection, goal-setting, and personal growth. As the calendar turns and a new year begins, many individuals embrace the tradition of making resolutions, which are promises or commitments to improve oneself or achieve specific goals. Crafting an essay about New Year’s resolutions allows us to delve deeper into our aspirations, motivations, and plans for the future. It prompts us to evaluate our past experiences, identify areas for improvement, and outline concrete steps towards personal development.

Table of Contents

New Year Resolution Essay Tips

Reflect on the past year: Begin by reflecting on the experiences, achievements, and challenges you encountered in the previous year. Consider what you learned, what you would like to improve, and what goals you want to set for the upcoming year.

Set specific and realistic goals: Choose resolutions that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART goals). Avoid vague or overly ambitious resolutions that may be difficult to achieve. Instead, focus on specific actions or behaviors that can be realistically implemented in your life.

Prioritize your resolutions: Identify the most important resolutions that align with your values, aspirations, and personal growth. It’s better to focus on a few meaningful goals rather than overwhelming yourself with an extensive list.

Provide context and personal anecdotes: Share personal stories or anecdotes that illustrate why each resolution is important to you. This will add depth and authenticity to your essay, allowing the reader to connect with your experiences and motivations.

Outline your action plan: For each resolution, outline the steps or strategies you plan to take to achieve it. Break down your goals into manageable tasks and establish a timeline or milestones to track your progress. This demonstrates your commitment and shows that you have thoughtfully considered the path to achieving your resolutions.

Discuss potential challenges and solutions: Acknowledge potential obstacles or challenges you may face while pursuing your resolutions. Address how you plan to overcome them and develop strategies to stay motivated and resilient in the face of setbacks.

Emphasize personal growth and self-reflection: Discuss how your resolutions contribute to your personal growth, well-being, and overall happiness. Reflect on the positive changes you anticipate in your life as a result of achieving these goals.

Be honest and authentic: Your essay should reflect your genuine aspirations and beliefs. Avoid writing what you think others want to hear and instead express your true intentions and values.

Edit and revise: Once you have written your essay, review it for clarity, coherence, and grammar. Edit out any unnecessary details or repetition, ensuring that your ideas flow logically.

Conclusion: Conclude your essay by summarizing your resolutions and reaffirming your commitment to achieving them. End on a positive note, expressing optimism and excitement for the new year.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #1

As the calendar turns and a new year dawns upon us, it is a time of reflection, renewal, and the opportunity for personal growth. New Year’s resolutions have long been a tradition, allowing individuals to set intentions and goals for the coming year. For me, this tradition is not just a fleeting promise but a chance to embark on a journey of self-improvement.

One of my resolutions for the upcoming year is to prioritize my physical and mental well-being. In the fast-paced world we live in, it is easy to neglect self-care amidst the demands of daily life. By making a conscious effort to exercise regularly, eat nutritious meals, and practice mindfulness, I aim to cultivate a healthier lifestyle. Taking care of my physical and mental health will not only enhance my overall well-being but also provide me with the energy and resilience necessary to tackle life’s challenges.

Another resolution I have is to expand my knowledge and broaden my horizons. Learning should be a lifelong endeavor, and I believe that continuous education is key to personal growth. Whether it’s through reading books, attending seminars, or taking up new hobbies, I aspire to constantly seek knowledge, explore diverse perspectives, and embrace new opportunities for intellectual development. By doing so, I hope to nurture my curiosity, deepen my understanding of the world, and become a more well-rounded individual.

Additionally, I resolve to foster stronger connections with loved ones and build meaningful relationships. In today’s digital age, it is easy to get caught up in a virtual world, often overlooking the importance of genuine human connection. I want to invest time and effort in nurturing my relationships, engaging in meaningful conversations, and creating lasting memories with family and friends. By being present and actively listening, I hope to strengthen the bonds that enrich my life and bring joy to those around me.

In conclusion, the start of a new year holds immense potential for growth and positive change. Through my resolutions to prioritize my well-being, expand my knowledge, and foster stronger connections, I am committed to embracing personal development and striving for a more fulfilling life. While resolutions may not always be easy to achieve, I am determined to approach them with dedication, perseverance, and a mindset open to learning from both successes and setbacks. As I embark on this journey of self-improvement, I am excited about the possibilities that the new year holds and the person I can become through embracing growth and positive change.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #2

As the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, a sense of possibility fills the air. It’s a time when we bid farewell to the old and eagerly embrace the new, armed with resolutions that promise personal growth and positive change. This year, I am determined to embark on a transformative journey through my New Year’s resolutions.

First and foremost, I resolve to cultivate a mindset of gratitude and positivity. In a world often defined by negativity and challenges, it is crucial to acknowledge and appreciate the blessings that surround us. Each day, I will strive to find something to be grateful for, whether it’s a simple pleasure or a significant achievement. By shifting my perspective to one of gratitude, I hope to nurture a positive outlook that permeates every aspect of my life.

Additionally, I am committed to prioritizing self-care and well-being. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to neglect our own needs. However, I believe that taking care of ourselves is not a luxury but a necessity. I will make a conscious effort to engage in activities that nourish my body, mind, and soul. This may include regular exercise, meditation, pursuing hobbies, or simply allowing myself time to rest and rejuvenate. By prioritizing self-care, I aim to create a solid foundation for overall well-being and resilience.

Furthermore, I aspire to embrace personal growth by stepping out of my comfort zone. Growth often occurs when we challenge ourselves and push beyond familiar boundaries. I will seek opportunities to learn and develop new skills, whether it’s taking on a new project at work, enrolling in a course, or engaging in meaningful conversations with people who possess different perspectives. By embracing discomfort and embracing the unknown, I believe I can unlock my full potential and continue evolving as an individual.

Lastly, I resolve to make a positive impact in the world around me. Small acts of kindness can create ripples of change that extend far beyond our immediate sphere. I will strive to contribute to my community through volunteering, supporting causes I care about, and spreading kindness wherever I go. By recognizing the power of my actions, no matter how small, I can be part of a collective effort to create a more compassionate and harmonious world.

In conclusion, New Year’s resolutions offer a pathway to personal transformation. Through cultivating gratitude, prioritizing self-care, embracing growth, and making a positive impact, I am committed to embarking on a journey of self-discovery and self-improvement. While the road may be challenging at times, I am determined to stay focused, resilient, and open to the opportunities that lie ahead. As the New Year unfolds, I am excited to see the person I can become and the positive changes I can bring to my own life and the world around me.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #3

As the New Year unfolds, I find myself reflecting on the past and envisioning a future filled with growth and self-improvement. This year, I am determined to prioritize balance and mindfulness in every aspect of my life through my New Year’s resolutions.

First and foremost, I resolve to achieve a healthier work-life balance. In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to become consumed by professional responsibilities, leaving little time for personal pursuits and relationships. I will set clear boundaries, carve out dedicated time for self-care, and strive to be fully present in my personal life. By nurturing a harmonious balance between work and leisure, I aim to enhance my overall well-being and cultivate stronger connections with loved ones.

Moreover, I am committed to practicing mindfulness in my daily life. Mindfulness is the art of being fully present and aware of the present moment, without judgment. I will incorporate mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and mindful eating into my routine. By cultivating a heightened sense of awareness and living in the present, I hope to reduce stress, increase focus, and find greater joy in the simple pleasures of life.

In addition, I resolve to prioritize self-reflection and personal growth. Regular self-reflection allows us to gain insights into our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, enabling us to make intentional choices. I will dedicate time for introspection, journaling, and setting personal goals. By embracing self-reflection, I can identify areas for improvement, celebrate achievements, and chart a course for personal growth and development.

Furthermore, I aspire to embrace sustainability and contribute to a healthier planet. I will adopt eco-friendly practices such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and supporting sustainable initiatives. By making conscious choices that minimize my ecological footprint, I can contribute to the preservation of our environment and inspire others to do the same.

Lastly, I resolve to foster a spirit of gratitude and kindness. Each day, I will make an effort to express gratitude for the blessings in my life and extend acts of kindness to others. Whether it’s through a simple smile, a heartfelt thank-you, or a charitable act, I believe that small gestures can have a profound impact on both the giver and the recipient.

In conclusion, my New Year’s resolutions revolve around embracing balance and mindfulness in all aspects of my life. By prioritizing work-life balance, practicing mindfulness, engaging in self-reflection, embracing sustainability, and fostering gratitude and kindness, I am committed to nurturing my well-being, personal growth, and contributing to a better world. As the New Year begins, I am excited to embark on this transformative journey, knowing that each step I take brings me closer to the balanced, mindful, and fulfilled life I aspire to lead.

200 New Year’s Resolution Ideas for Career, Work, and Personal Growth

A New Year’s Resolution is a Filipino tradition. Or at least, that’s how Filipino students deemed it. Every January of each year, on the first day of class, students from elementary, high school, and college declare their New Year’s resolutions.

When I was in high school, I wrote my New Year’s Resolution essays (as it was often required) during Christmas breaks. It is still cool to write resolutions these days for fun.

I do Impact Goals, Quarterly Goals, and Monthly Projects, which are better than most New Year’s Resolutions. I will share these with you later if you are interested. An excellent support to your New Year’s resolutions is  3 Words . Find out how to do it.

I am publishing this three days before the New Year. So you will have plenty of time to write your New Year’s Resolution or do the alternatives.

New Year’s Resolution Ideas

Typically, people get a pen and a piece of paper to write one, two, three, or even ten New Year’s resolutions. They write down whatever comes to mind.

A few get post-it notes and Sharpie pens. They write on each note one resolution. They may come up with dozens. Then, they pick the top ten they want to do next year.

I separate my New Year’s resolutions for family and work.

I use a mind map when I make resolutions. It is creative. I write the year, then encircle it. I think of three words. For work, my three words for 2023 are transformation, experience, and dollars. Then, I will generate more ideas from each word.

Another exercise that I do, which I can do any month of the year, is Stop, Continue, and Start.

Most people consider the brainstorming session as the only step to writing a resolution. This is why most of the resolutions don’t have staying power. Later, I will show you ways to make your resolutions compelling.

If you are looking for New Year’s Resolution ideas, these will help you. Open each accordion pane to find resolutions that may inspire you

New Year's Resolution is a Fresh Start

What is a New Year’s Resolution?

A New Year’s Resolution is a declaration of what a person intends or resolves to do at the beginning of the year. Typically, people decide to stop doing undesirable traits or behaviors, continue doing good practices, and start working on personal goals or improving behaviors.

When you ask Filipinos, more than half will say they have New Year’s Resolution. About 1/3 say that they have written resolutions. You will find 100 examples of New Year’s Resolutions below.

Nearly half of those who don’t make New Year’s Resolution say it does not work.

Importance of New Year’s Resolution

Most people think that they need to do more these past years. The Covid-19 pandemic, for two years, made us anxious about the future. I remember that the New Year of 2021 was the first time most people stayed home. In January 2022, we recorded the highest number of Covid-19 infections.

But 2023 promises a better year. And once again, people talk about New Year’s Resolutions. And that’s good news.

There are mixed opinions as to the importance of resolutions. And I understand why.

Some people failed to continue what they started. Or they missed many opportunities of doing what they believed they should have done many New Year’s resolutions ago.

In 1996, Carlo declared that he would enroll again to finish his Master of Arts in Teaching. It was always a part of his New Year’s Resolutions. This year, he decided that pursuing it was of no use. The 30 units he earned will no longer be credited. He procrastinated. And procrastination sealed his fate, he believed.

A friend made a New Year’s Resolution to start jogging five years ago. So on January 4 last year, she started jogging around our neighborhood. She continued doing it for 15 more days. Then, she decided to pause for a week because of an important assignment. The one week became months. Yesterday, she said that she’d start again.

Thirty years ago, I “resolved” to write a book. I began with full enthusiasm, then eventually stopped. In Filipino, we call this habit Ningas Kugon. However, a friend commissioned me two years ago to write a book. I wrote that book in 16 days. I am confident I can write at least one book in 2023.

All New Year’s resolutions are aspirations for personal growth and development. And though you don’t have to wait for January 1 to start thinking about choosing the right things to do, a New Year’s resolution, as a tradition, reminds us about second chances, and the simple act of declaring our intentions helps us think deeply about the future.

2023 essay resolution

Panata sa Bagong Taon

For Filipinos, a new year is a promise of a new life. It is more than just a day after December 31.

It is a fresh start.

In Filipino, New Year’s Resolution means panata sa bagong taon. It is not just an aspiration or a wish. It is a vow.

It is a fresh start. Whatever happened last year and the years before that have no hold on our future. We can choose to live the life we want.

Most New Year’s Resolutions aren’t fulfilled because of misunderstandings. But we will start behaving differently when we fully embrace that a new year is a fresh start and a resolution is a vow.

Why Some New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work

I have already given you three reasons why New Resolutions don’t work. And I have also given you an idea of why it works. So allow me to expound and expand.

Procrastination

The lack of willpower makes us delay. Procrastination is a silent killer. It murders our dreams without our notice.

People think that there is always tomorrow. We only have today; tomorrow is not promised to anyone.

If something is significant, it must be done today.

A resolution is a vow; it is not just a wish. A wish is something that may happen someday. A vow is your business today.

Ningas Kugon

Have you noticed that lifetime gym memberships are sold for a 50 percent discount during December and January? That’s because many people overestimate themselves.

A lifetime gym membership often gets used in three months.

If you are in Quezon Memorial Circle in the early mornings, you will see thousands of joggers. Some of them start at 5 am. But, during the first six weeks of the year, you’ll notice that the numbers are five times more than usual.

Ningas kugon is a lot better than procrastination. Starting something is already tricky. But success is measured by how we finished, not by how we started our games.

Ningas Kugon is often the result of a lack of commitment, discipline, and momentum.

Lack of Commitment

A committed person dedicates his time to a cause that truly matters to him. Those who cannot commit fail again and again.

A committed person displays patience, persistence, and perseverance. You can only be that person when you believe you can make things happen. Without that belief, there is no urgency. Without that belief, you will allow your fear to delay or stop you as soon as you face your first challenge.

Consider that a resolution is a vow to your future self.

Lack of Discipline

I see that even the most motivated people need to honor their resolutions. They can start, but they need to learn how to finish.

They work on many things but only sometimes on the most important thing.

A person with discipline does what they value most every day. They don’t allow their circumstances to dictate their actions.

New Year’s resolutions are good for us. They are part of the solution. Unfortunately, they don’t work when people don’t have the discipline to execute them.

Lack of Momentum

People need more momentum to finish what they start. There needs to be more than just doing the first step to walking a thousand miles. You need to follow the first with another step, and you need to keep moving until you reach a thousand miles.

Followthrough makes a breakthrough.

To create momentum, you need focus, consistency, and action.

By telling you why resolutions often do not work, can you tell how to make them work?

2023 essay resolution

People often write these New Year’s Resolution ideas. As I have mentioned, I used different methods to come up with my list, and brainstorming is just the first stage. If you will only copy any of these resolutions, it is more likely that you’ll do a ningas kugon.

Resolutions that get done are clear and compelling.

I will show you different ways to write clear and compelling New Year’s Resolutions.

My 3 Words for 2023

2023 essay resolution

Daig ng Maagap ang Masipag: Be A Proactive Hard Worker

These are the frequently asked questions that seldom get answers. If you want to get a better appreciation of these answers, you can read the whole article (if you have not yet done that).

Becoming a good person, working harder, and being more health conscious are Filipinos’ top 3 New Year’s resolutions. Becoming a good person is the most common topic in students’ New Year’s Resolution Essays. Working harder is our solution to having a good life. And being more health conscious may mean eating fruits and vegetables, losing weight, or gaining weight.

New Year’s Resolutions fail because of procrastination, ningas kugon, lack of clarity, lack of commitment, lack of discipline, and lack of momentum. Unfortunately, these are the same reasons my many goals fail too. Declaring what you resolve to stop, start, and continue doing is not enough; you need to follow through. A resolution, by definition, is a vow to do what you want to do no matter what.

The Tagalog for New Year’s Resolution is Panata sa Bagong Taon. A panata is a vow. For Filipinos, a new year celebration represents a fresh start. We vow to work harder to enjoy abundant lives.

Many people have changed their lives because they stick to their New Year’s resolutions. They kept their eyes on their aspirations and stuck to them. Though most who made New Year’s Resolutions stop working on them after six weeks, the problem is not in the resolutions but in the resolution of the person to make them happen. The intention to make change happen is the first step, which is a significant step to making change happen.

New Year’s Resolution Essay (Example)

As I have said, when I was in school, we were required to write our New Year’s Resolution essays in 200 words. I typically write more than that.

One way to write an essay is by using CONTINUE, STOP, and START. It is a very simple format that you anyone can follow.

The Year 2023 is a promise of a fresh start and bouncing forward. The last two years have been difficult because I could not go out. I was afraid, physically and psychologically.

The pandemic scare is not yet over. New variants of the virus appear. But for most of us vaccinated, there is confidence that we can finally fight the unknown.

There are things I know that I can change. And there are things that I must continue doing. My New Year’s Resolution is a manifesto, a declaration of what I want to continue, stop, and start doing in 2023.

CONTINUE I will continue to improve my skills in public speaking. Though I have been speaking for many years and earning money from it, there are many things that I need to learn. Public speaking turned my life around. And though there are many other opportunities to grow my business, I will continue speaking to inspire people and grow my business.

STOP I will stop spending time on Facebook, debating political issues with strangers, diehard supporters, and trolls. As much as I wanted to educate people and share with them what I know as a student of politics, I was doing it wrong.

Debating with strangers will not help. Adding my voice to a thousand who do not want to listen to each other won’t add value. I am not a follower. I am not a watcher.

I am a leader. And my platform is on the stage. I speak to lead, not just to add my voice.

I will expand my network to bring my message to many people. I will speak in schools to share my message with students and educators. I will talk at associations, conferences, and in company assemblies.

I will share a message of hope in my team-building programs, leadership training, and public seminars.

I will start speaking to change the world.

Mission Possible 2023

Your mission is to write your own New Year’s Resolution. Keep in mind that it is not just a wish. It is a panata , a vow that you have to your future self.

I recommend that you make your resolution visual. Take it seriously. Convert it into a personal development plan. Execute it. Then, teach others how to do it well.

The Origins of New Year’s Resolutions

Mind if we talk for a minute to discuss the history of new year’s resolutions ? It’s relevant, promise!

Over 4,000 years ago , when the new year started in mid-March, the ancient Babylonians made new year’s resolutions to the gods . For them, keeping their promises to repay debts and return anything they borrowed would bring them favor and blessings in the new year.

The key lesson here is that it was all about keeping their new year’s resolutions, not just making them . The same can be said for the ancient Romans who celebrated the new year with reflections on the past year , and preparations for the new year .

Many cultures, religions, and groups of people throughout the ages have marked the new year with a reflection on the last year and recommitment to be or do better in the new year. These are the two main ingredients for writing a new year’s resolution .

“One annual event, New Year's Day, is a time of reflection and resolution.” ― Joseph B. Wirthlin

With this in mind, here are 7 ways to write a new year’s resolution for 2024.

7 Ways to Write a New Year’s Resolution

Before we get to some easy-to-follow formulas for writing your new year’s resolution, let’s go over a few ground rules. Think of these as the top mistakes people make when making resolutions .

  • Forget what you think your resolution should be, write whatever you want
  • Write out of hope for the future, not fear of what might happen
  • Your resolution doesn’t have to be big and epic, it can be simple
  • Don’t worry what anyone will think or say, your resolution is for you
  • Make it all about what actually matters the most to you

Got it? Awesome, that’s how you choose the right new year’s resolution for you, that you can actually keep.

#1. Using Guiding Prompts

Why stare at a blank sheet of paper, when you can get help from guiding prompts? If you’re not sure what a prompt is, they’re a short phrase that starts a sentence. You simply complete it!

Since we’re using them to write a new year’s resolution, the perfect guiding prompts will include catchphrases for the new year and positive affirmative statements like “I will.”

Here are five guiding prompts to help you write your new year’s resolution:

  • In 2024, I will…
  • My best year ever is…
  • This year, I’m going to…
  • New year, new me means…
  • My best year yet will…

You get the idea! The key to using guiding prompts to write a new year’s resolution is to not overthink it. Just complete each guiding prompt honestly.

Remember, your new year’s resolution is for you, and you alone!

#2. With Action Words

What will you do in 2024? Do you know? Need some ideas for thinking of the perfect new year’s resolution for you?

To help you brainstorm new year’s resolution ideas , use verbs and action words like “start,” “stop,” “create” and “become.”

Here are ten more powerful action words to help you write a new year’s resolution:

“You just have to live today. And I think one of my New Year's resolutions is definitely trying to stop and live in the moment and cherish it.” ― Thomas Rhett

Isn’t this a fun way to make a list of all the amazing things you’ll do in 2023?

#3. Ask Reflection Questions

We ask questions so we can get answers! That’s why answering self-reflection questions about the new year are one of the best ways to write a new year’s resolution.

Remember, that reflecting on the past and thinking about the future is the ancient recipe for making a new year’s resolution.

You can take some time to review your year with questions like,

  • How do you feel about your last year?
  • What about 2023 feels unfinished, or incomplete?
  • Did you accomplish your goals? Why or why not?
  • What would you do if anything was possible?
  • How can you make your life better in the new year?
  • What’s one thing you would change about your life?

You get the idea! The point of these questions is to get to the heart of what you really, truly want to achieve in 2024.  Keep it simple remember, focus on what matters to you the most, not what you think you should.

#4. Make it SMART

One of the best ways to write a resolution you can keep is to make it a “SMART” resolution! Essentially, it’s a SMART goal that you’re calling your resolution.

In case you’re not familiar with the term, S.M.A.R.T. goals are the gold standard in goal setting. Being specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound, they’re one of the best ways to avoid goal-setting mistakes and failure.

So, why not use this framework to help you write a new year’s resolution? Sounds like the perfect plan.

To write a new year’s resolution that’s also a S.M.A.R.T. goal, it needs to check each of these boxes:

  • Specific : What exactly do you want to achieve?
  • Measurable : How will you measure success or failure?
  • Attainable : Can you actually achieve this?
  • Relevant : Is this the best resolution for you?
  • Time-bound : How much time do you need?

Examples of SMART New Year’s Resolutions:

To help you make sure your own resolution meets these requirements, here are two of the most popular new year’s resolutions rewritten as SMART resolutions.

#1. “ Get rich ” or “make more money”

  • I will increase my income by $10,000 in 2024 by cutting back on spending and starting a side-hustle business so that I can save up a down payment for a home for my family.

#2. “ Get fit in the new year ” or “lose weight”

  • By October 2024, I will lose 25 lbs and keep it off for good with daily exercise and eating healthy meals so that I can finally breath better and keep up with my kids.

Just like that simple wishes that are bound to fail become strategic blueprints for success.

Take your resolutions and make them SMART goals too.

#5. Reflect on Your Life

Want to write a new year’s resolution that really matters to you? Take time to reflect on all the areas of your life to find the perfect focus for 2024.

Sometimes it’s hard to think of the best resolution to set when you’re reflecting on your life as a whole. Questions like, “what’s your greatest challenge” or even “how would you change your life for the better ,” can be hard to answer without a point of reference.

If these questions make you go glossy-eyed, then taking the time to reflect on each individual area of your life is the right choice. Don’t think about everything at once, just one area at a time.

“The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write that story by setting goals.” ― Melody Beattie

There are ten distinct areas of your life, where do you stand in each?

  • Physical Health and Fitness
  • Emotional Wellbeing and Wellness
  • Finances and Money Habits
  • Spirituality and Connection
  • Experiences and Everyday Life
  • Relationships, Family, and Friendships
  • Career and Worklife
  • Education and Learning
  • Community and Belonging
  • Mind and Mental Life

#6. Think Less and More

If you’re looking for a super simple way to write a new year’s resolution, this is it! Think in terms of doing less of this, and doing more of this in 2024.

Grab a sheet of paper, and make two columns (or get your FREE New Year’s Resolution Workbook). Then write down everything you want to do less of in the new year, and all the things you want to do more of.

Is there a more simple formula for living a happy life ?

Here are some examples to help you with your list:

  • Do less complaining, feeling guilty, thinking negative thoughts , eating junk food
  • Do more meditation , things that make me smile, mental health days , taco Tuesdays

Keep it simple, even slightly silly if your life, remember it’s your new year’s resolution. The best part about thinking in terms of less and more is that you’re already making a list of perfect daily habits to start in the new year. It’s the small changes that make a big difference .

#7. Use Power Words

Have you heard about power words before? They’re the types of words that excite, inspire, and motivate you when you use them .  Power words are full of emotion and feeling. When you read them, you can literally feel it!

Similar to the action words above, power words are perfect for writing your new year’s resolution. You can also add them to your already written resolution for an extra bit of something.

There’s an endless list of power words for you to choose from, but here are some truly spectacular ones:

My New Year Resolution Essay - 100, 200, 500 Words

People celebrate the beginning of a new year to give a fresh start to their lives. They take new year resolutions because everyone made mistakes in the previous year that they want to avoid in the future or to do something new in the next year. Resolutions assist us in staying focused on our choices.

When this year began, I resolved to focus on areas where I am weak or lack confidence. This covered my weak subject areas, my extreme engagement in watching web series, my inability to manage time for other activities etc. I made a timetable which I reviewed and modified every week, such that I accommodated all my activities and devoted adequate time to them. At the end of the year, I could feel positive results and felt proud of myself for sticking to my new year resolutions.

The New year reminds us that time is not permanent. It moves silently and stops for no one. A single goal or a list of goals one wants to accomplish or get rid of might form a new year's resolution. They give us a new chance to achieve something in our life, whether it is related to our personal life, professional life or academic life. For a resolution to work in our lives, we must be a person with strong determination.

Importance of Resolutions | New year resolutions are important for various reasons, some of them being:-

All activities that waste time and result in nothing are eliminated and replaced with new ones that never waste time and result in positive changes.

Someone who does not make any resolutions for the new year is similar to someone walking somewhere without knowing the way.

No matter how big or little a resolution is, it is important to consider its purpose and the results it will produce when put into practice in our daily lives.

My Resolutions | I have also made resolutions previously, but like everyone else, I break them. But this time, I will keep my resolutions and put more effort into changing myself. I made a list of resolutions that I plan to begin following next year. They consist of sticking to a set schedule for time management, avoiding junk food and putting a priority on healthy food for better health, and, most importantly, completing courses before exams.

A New year is not only about parties and celebrations or spending money lavishly, but it is also an excellent opportunity to start over and make changes in our life. Having a new year's resolution is a thing to be proud of and to share with others. It is what we promised to do at the end of the year. Making a new year's resolution is crucial because I need a goal or purpose to live.

Different People, Different Resolutions

Before moving forward, it is important to keep in mind that the changes must be fair and respectable. A resolution for the coming year is an idea that better defines and represents you. A new year's resolution is different for every person. Some may believe that resolutions work, while others may feel that they do nothing. A mature man will have the resolution to avoid bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol. For students, it may include exercising daily, going to bed early, eating healthy food etc. Having a new year resolution sounds as easy as ABC but applying it throughout the year is a big task as the world is full of distractions.

New Year’s Resolution Essay Writing (MADE EASY!) for Middle School

new years resolution essay ideas for middle school language arts

Happy New Year! The return from winter break in January offers the perfect backdrop to get students thinking about their academic and personal goals for the year. I love to take the time to challenge my students to think about their work so far and where they hope to be by the end of the school year. I like to begin the year with a New Year’s resolution essay writing unit where we work on goal-setting and resolve to do things that will help us to be an even better version of ourselves.

There are plenty of unique ways to teach essay writing, but I have found success with the BING BANG BONGO essay template. The concept is easy for students to understand. Here is an overview of the steps:

  • Identify your topic, and brainstorm the three main points or ideas you will use to craft your essay.
  • Introduction with a Topic Sentence . What is your piece about? What three pieces of information do you want to share with the reader based on the topic of your piece?
  • BING Paragraph 1 : What is the first idea you shared in your topic sentence? Your first sentence should introduce that first idea. Follow this with two or three supporting sentences, and close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • BANG Paragraph 2 : What is the second idea you shared in your topic sentence? Two or three supporting sentences should follow the opening sentence in introducing that second idea. Close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • BONGO Paragraph 3 : What is the third idea you shared in your topic sentence? Again, clearly state the third idea in your opening sentence and write two or three supporting sentences. Close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • Conclusion: Concluding Sentence: Bring your piece to a close. Restate the purpose of the essay, but do not add any new information. Make sure you complete your thoughts so the reader walks away with a full understanding of your points.

If you are interested in a complete essay writing resource that is based on the BING, BANG, BONGO strategy, check out my New Year’s Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit , which can be used as a printable unit or integrated in Google Classroom.

New Year's Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit

To kick off the brainstorming process for this lesson plan, I start by discussing commercials students have noticed on TV. Typically, they will confirm they have seen lots of commercials for gym memberships and weight-loss companies. I ask them why they think these are so prominent during January, and they respond that people are often setting goals at the beginning of a new year.

From there, we create a brainstorm cloud where students list ways they could improve themselves. Some examples are: practicing harder, putting more effort into school work, listening more to a parent, being more responsible, etc. Depending on the suggestions you receive, it can also be helpful to explain the difference between setting a goal and achieving a dream.

Next, I have the students decide on the three goals they want to work on. Those get added to their brainstorm organizer, and we then move on to writing.

resolution brainstorm organizer

Next, we move on to creating our topic sentences. Sometimes it is best for teachers to share examples of their own topic sentences first, so students understand how to begin organizing their writing. I usually model my own resolutions in front of the class so we can go through the thought process together. My three goals for this project were: saving more money, being less quick-tempered, and saying only respectful things about others.

Once you establish topic sentences, show students how your BING paragraph (in my case) would be all about saving money, my BANG paragraph would be all about being less quick-tempered, and my BONGO paragraph would be all about saying only respectful things about others.

Students always LOVE to hear the stories behind my resolutions, and you’ll never face a shortage of suggestions to help you achieve your resolutions!

BING BANG BONGO essay writing paragraphs

In addition to having three strategies, I require each paragraph to include an opening sentence introducing the resolution and a concluding sentence bringing the paragraph to a close.

On the second day, I like to review our previous instructions and get to work on our introductions and conclusions. Some teachers may find this strategy backwards, but I have found it can be tricky for students to find a place to begin. With each of their body paragraphs completed, students have a better grasp of how they need to grab the reader’s attention and then bring the work to a close.

I often use the example of crime and drama shows when discussing the introductory paragraph. Often, the writers open the show with a shocking image or event to grab the audience’s attention and keep them glued to the show. This is the same type of statement we want to make with the first sentences in our resolution essay.

For the conclusions, I share how we are bringing the piece to a close and sending the reader on their way. This is NOT the time to share new information, but instead to give the reader the chance to reflect on what we have shared. At this point, the students will have completed their organizers and are ready for the first draft of their resolution essay.

As part of the review process, I typically have a writing conference with each student. The focus here is: mechanics-CUPS-capitalization, usage/grammar, punctuation, and spelling. We also discuss organization and the use of transitions in their sentences. Here is an example editing chart, which is included in the Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit from above.

CUPS Editing Chart - capitalization, usage/grammar, punctuation, and spelling

After all edits are in place, students rewrite their final drafts and publish them on their Chromebooks or display them in the classroom. Not everyone will be interested in sharing their resolutions, so choose which format makes the most sense for your group.

Essay writing is a skill that students can learn in the middle grades and will carry with them through college. Sadly, this wasn’t a skill I learned until high school, but with common core standards, writing extensive or elaborate pieces is now a requirement for our students at all levels, specifically in the middle grades.

For this reason, I created the Resolutions Made Easy writing resource. I wanted to help my students construct a thorough essay that required them to write 5-paragraphs effectively and successfully. If you want to stick to resolutions like being more organized in 2023, resolution coach Carly Tizzano has some helpful tips.

When it comes to New Year’s resolutions, Carly Tizzano knows exactly where you’re going wrong.

“We all joke about resolutions and it’s become just part of the narrative that you set them and then forget about them — and maybe you never really intended to keep them in the first place,” said the Poulsbro, Washington-based life coach, who specializes in helping people stick to their resolutions .

“Before you know it, the end of the year has rolled around and you make the same [resolutions] all over again. And so the cycle continues.”

Indeed, a December 2022 poll by YouGov found that over a third of Americans planned to make some kind of resolution in January 2023 , with getting fit and saving money the most common goals.

But not many people will see them through: In fact, around 80% will fail by February.

Strava, the fitness tracking app, analyzed more than 800 million user-logged activities in 2019 and concluded that the day most people will give up on a resolution is January 19 — aka “Quitter’s Day.”

Carly Tizzano is a life coach specializing in helping people stick to their New Year's resolutions.

But according to Tizzano, we’re not automatically doomed to failure . With a clearer focus and a little accountability, she insists, you can reach virtually any goal you may have set yourself for 2023.

In recent years, Tizzano has helped out people whose New Year resolutions varied from launching a business to running a marathon to writing a book. She has also worked with clients intent on getting their driver’s license or decluttering their houses and even someone who, after much prevarication, went on to complete their PhD thanks to the supervised structure she put in place.

On the more personal, rather than professional, Tizzano has helped people find love and friendship — but also focused clients’ resolve to end relationships they needed to escape.

One key is to holding yourself more accountable — like joining a fitness class instead of just a gym.

Equal parts counselor and confidante, mentor and motivator, Tizzano’s role is as varied as the client she helps.

“I see myself as a ‘library of ideas. Ultimately, my goal is to see clients reach their goal but also to have developed those skills and possess the tools they need to keep reaching their goals in the future,” she said.

It’s not just a lack of willpower that prevents people from succeeding. Sometimes, it goes much deeper, like low self-esteem. “A client came to me the first time and she really just didn’t believe that she could reach any of her targets, no matter what she did,” explained Tizzano, who also hosts the Resolve podcast. “So we worked together for several months and a year later she got in touch to tell me about all these incredible new endeavors she was undertaking.

Focusing on money is one of the most common goals for Americans each year.

“To see that transformation from someone who thought she didn’t even deserve to achieve things in life to someone who figured it all out was just so cool.”

Tizzano’s New Year’s resolution coaching lasts a minimum of three months and clients pay $597 per month for the course. Many, she said, stay for the whole year. In return, they receive one-to-one coaching and round-the-clock access to Tizzano should they ever feel themselves waffling.

It’s not cheap, but, Tizzano said, the financial commitment can build in accountability that means the difference between success and failure. “Sometimes that’s exactly what they need to put a bit more effort and energy into their resolutions,” she said. “You know, ‘I am willing to put my money on the line to make it happen.'”

Out of sight, out of mind is one of the most problems leading to dropping resolutions like weight loss.

But, she admitted, throwing money at a resolution doesn’t always work: “Mind you, plenty of people sign up for the gym at this time of the year and never go too.”

Here are Tizzano’s top four tips for helping you stick to your 2023 resolutions:

Set up reminders

“By January 2 — and definitely by June 2— most resolutions have been forgotten. But many different tools and techniques exist to remember resolutions throughout the year,” Tizzano said. While she relies on her Notes app, a more forceful way to think about it is to schedule a weekly or even daily calendar alert. “The only bad reminder is a non-existent one,” the coach added.

Joining a book club can be a good way to hold yourself more accountable if your resolution is to read more.

Build in accountability

Tizzano encourages clients to make themselves accountable to other people, as it’s easier to let down yourself than someone else. Join a book club if your goal is to read more, or sign up for a fitness class — instead of just generally joining a gym. “Keeping track of progress in a log can also be a form of accountability,” said Tizzano.

Focus on the future

“I always recommend clients create a vision for where they are going to be on December 31,” said Tizzano. “This vision details the people they want to be, what they want to have accomplished and how they want to have grown by the time that day rolls around next year. Cultivating a desire for the person they want to be when their resolutions have been kept is an incredibly valuable tool.”

Treat yourself

Break up your resolution into smaller goals and reward yourself when you meet one — say, reading 20 minutes every day for a month. “Recognize your progress throughout the year,” Tizzano said. “It will keep you motivated.”

A list of our staff’s favorite essays from the past year.

2023 essay resolution

Hello, New Lines readers,

We hope you’re enjoying a much-needed holiday break. We have a lot in store for 2023, particularly the launch of our print edition. In the meantime, as has become tradition, we wanted to share with you a list of our staff’s favorite essays from the past year. We hope you’ll find something of interest in this eclectic collection of stories.

Wishing you a Happy New Year from the New Lines team!

The Day My Wartime Cat Went Missing, by Rasha Elass

Riada asimovic akyol, strategic initiatives editor.

Many of my close friends tell me that, despite my irrational fear of cats, I’d be a perfect “cat person,” once I dared to confront those fears. I’ve acknowledged the joy and glow in their eyes, when my friends speak of their pets. I’ve observed such bonds curiously and in a more mindful way in the last few years, especially after becoming a mother, responsible for someone else’s life.

The essay “The Day My Wartime Cat Went Missing” was published early in 2022, and was an instant classic. Our Editorial Director, Rasha Elass, writes masterfully about her adventures with adopted cats Pumpkin and Gremlin, whom she first met in Abu Dhabi. She beautifully depicts how they survived a tough war, and the different challenges they’ve been through in the Middle East and the United States. She shares her genuine love and nurturing care, as well as her dread at the possibility of losing them, whether in peacetime or war.

The essay is a gorgeous reminder of the bonds that matter. Check it out for yourself.

How I Survived a Syrian Gulag, by Jaber Baker

Rasha al aqeedi, middle east deputy editor.

The terms “dictatorship,” “fascism,” “authoritarianism” and “totalitarianism” are thrown around today to describe various ruling systems in the world to such an extent that they have lost their actual meaning. Inconveniences such as losing access to a social media platform are compared to the conditions that led to the Holocaust, while wearing a pandemic-imposed mask is akin to living in a gulag.

The Syrian author Jaber Baker takes us on a dark journey through his time in an actual gulag run by Bashar al-Assad’s Baath Party. For me personally, the essay is a masterclass in storytelling and struck more chords and triggered more memories of my childhood and adolescence in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq than I wish it had. The true experiences and traumas of dictatorship face the threat of being drowned out by the noises of victimhood culture. While no one has a monopoly on trauma, Syrians have the right to tell the stories of their torture and suffering. It is a reminder that not all injustices are created equal.

The Last of the Bougainvillea Years, by Zeina Hashem Beck

Erin clare brown, north africa editor.

When faced with an impending move to Paris from Dubai in search of more stability for her family, poet Zeina Hashem Beck is suddenly filled with the pangs of loss — not for the Emirates, where she’d lived since 2006, but for her home in Lebanon. She explores this abstract sense of displacement and longing in her gorgeously crafted essay, written in a pitch-perfect prose that carries the music of poetry through her attempts to sort her belongings, prepare her children, and reassure herself that the displacement is the right call. Through it all Hashem Beck mourns the impending loss of her bougainvillea vines, whose clouds of pink blossoms and wicked thorns come to symbolize in turns her beloved hometown, her Mediterranean identity and in ways, the author herself.

It’s a beautiful meditation on loss and longing, displacement and belonging that reminds us that when we are the right amount of thirsty, we blossom.

What Ukraine Means for Lithuanians Haunted by Soviet Past, by Inga Rudzinskaite-Colman

Amie ferris-rotman, global news editor.

When reading this essay, one feels that an entire generation of Eastern Europeans is speaking, in a single, defiant voice, suddenly with renewed urgency. The globe is so focused on Russia’s horrific assault on Ukraine, and the grim atrocities the Russian military commits practically every day, that we often forget, or perhaps do not realize, the impact the war has on Moscow’s previous victims. In this essay, the analyst Inga Rudzinskaite-Colman, who was born and raised in Vilnius, dives into complicated issues like collective trauma and self-identity. She tells us, in poignant detail, how she and her fellow countrymen and women strived for decades to disassociate themselves from Russia and their Soviet past. But belonging to the Western “club” has also meant uncomfortable compromises, like being “Russiasplained” to. Read this beautifully written essay to peer into the new realities facing the Baltics, Poland and other countries once in Russia’s orbit, who are now finding themselves united by survival.

Rushdie Is India’s Forgotten Child of Midnight, by Pratik Kanjilal

Surbhi gupta, south asia editor.

Earlier this year, when Salman Rushdie was attacked before his talk in western New York, his supposed safe haven, much of the discussion in the media and reports in the news cycle focused on the politics of that infamous fatwa by the Ayatollah Khomeini calling for the writer’s death and its repercussions on the Muslim world. Yet, despite the fact Rushdie has roots in India and the subcontinent has been a constant source of inspiration for his writing, I could find no essay that delved into this relationship and work with South Asia — before this one.

While many were focused on the backlash against Rushdie’s novel, “The Satanic Verses,” the South Asian connection in the story was being overlooked. The first protests against the book happened not in Iran but in Pakistan, and this prompted the Indian government to ban its import from the U.K. It was, indeed, in a review in an Indian magazine that the Ayatollah is said to have first learned of the book. That’s why I loved this essay by Pratik Kanjilal, a veteran journalist and books editor in India, who has followed Rushdie’s journey closely through the years and was the best person to write it. He packs a lot into this essay: He writes about Rushdie, critiques his work, discusses what his Booker Prize wins meant for English writing in India, his relationship with India and Pakistan, and the irony of the attack, coinciding as it did with the 75th Independence Day celebrations in India.

Faith and Vengeance: the Islamic State’s War in Afghanistan, by Fazelminallah Qazizai and Chris Sands

Tam hussein, associate editor.

This piece tells the story of the rise of the Islamic State of Khorasan Province (ISKP), and its fall and rebirth, told through the character of Abu Omar Khorasani, “the most feared and despised prisoner in Directorate 40.” It takes you on a journey from the Afghan Jihad in the 1980s all the way to the present. I love deep dives and investigations. This particular piece is very original and will no doubt populate the citations of many books on the topic for years to come. To produce an essay of such quality requires a supportive editorial team and journalists willing to follow the story all the way. For me, that is embodied in this investigation. When I read it, I can almost see the legwork and local knowledge put in by Fazelminallah Qazizai. I see the crisp writing style of Qazizai’s co-author Chris Sands, the beautiful artwork of Joanna Andreasson and the background work that the editorial team puts in months before publication. And so it’s not just an enjoyable and interesting read, it’s what our managing editor Ola Salem says the best essays are — a work of art.

When Uganda Expelled Its Asian Population in 1972, Britain Tried to Exclude Them, by Saima Nasar

Kwangu liwewe, africa editor.

When I read this essay, it reminded me of the writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s The Danger of a Single Story. For five decades, the narrative about the expulsion of Uganda’s Asians has been that they went to Britain, were welcomed there and lived as refugees, then successfully assimilated into society and have contributed to all spheres of British life.

This essay puts the spotlight on how the narrative changed from unwanted Asian immigrants to one of a humanitarian response, when the plight of Asians became international news and Britain feared a backlash. The writer Saima Nasar lifts the lid on this narrative and tells the story of how, in actual fact, the Asians were British passport holders and were initially not welcome in Britain.

Nasar writes, “While Ugandan Asians have no doubt shaped Britain’s economic, political and socio-cultural landscapes, it is important to avoid celebratory narratives that overlook histories of struggle and discrimination.”

It is an important essay that challenges society to re-examine historical narratives.

A Film Critic Reflects on the Artistic Journeys and Vision of the Late French Director Jean-Luc Godard, by Jonathan Rosenbaum

Danny postel, politics editor.

When I saw the news on Sept. 13 that the legendary filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard had died, I immediately called Jonathan Rosenbaum, the longtime film critic for my local alt-weekly newspaper, the Chicago Reader, and the author of multiple books on world cinema. Rosenbaum had written extensively about Godard’s films over the years and had interviewed the grand poobah of French cinema’s New Wave movement on more than one occasion. I was thrilled that Rosenbaum agreed to write for us, despite being unfamiliar with New Lines (he later informed me that Sight and Sound, the magazine of the British Film Institute, also asked him to write something on Godard but we got to him first).

In the essay, he discusses several of Godard’s films — “Breathless” (1960), “Alphaville” (1965), “Tout Va Bien” (1972), “Every Man for Himself” (1980), “Passion” (1982), “Nouvelle Vague” (1990) and “Histoire(s) du Cinéma,” an eight-part experimental video series made between 1988 and 1998 — but it’s far from a survey of the late director’s filmography. Instead, it’s a deeply personal meditation on his poetic vision and colossal global influence, and on the relationship between art and commercial success and failure. “Marketplace value has little or nothing to do with the love of art,” Rosenbaum writes, and “there’s no way of gauging the latter via the former, especially insofar as the intensity of the love and the qualities of the audience experiencing and expressing it aren’t even remotely quantifiable.” Godard once said to Rosenbaum: “I like to think of myself as an airplane, not an airport.” Reflecting on that quip, Rosenbaum writes that “vehicles that take us places, and the destinations of those who make them don’t have to be the same as the destinations of those who climb into those vehicles.”

Between Two Rivers, Between Two Myths, by Sophus Helle

Lydia wilson, culture editor.

I wanted to choose a history essay for two reasons: It’s one of the genres that we do particularly well and, second, this type of long-form history is not given much space in other outlets. Our history essays are always deep-dive explorations of stories from the past from experts on the subject, showing us something new about the world, whether a new perspective on a familiar topic or a previously hidden gem.

“Between Two Rivers,” by the Mesopotamian scholar Sophus Helle, exemplifies what we’re trying to do. It is based on deep expertise, exploring the identities of societies going back millennia in the territory now called Iraq. Helle looks at the labels these cultures gave themselves and were given by later invaders or historians. But it does not only tell the story of the historical material. Crucially, it explains why these facts, controversies and debates about old identities are relevant today, and the obfuscation of the past realities on the ground in Iraq does not serve its present inhabitants. History matters, and this essay brings that home.

An Exile Returns to Find Syria Changed Forever, by Nizar Kinaan

Faisal al yafai, international editor.

It’s been a year of war — as too many of the past few years have been — this time dominated in Europe by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. At the magazine, we’ve certainly published a lot about the Ukraine war, but we’ve also kept a close eye on other conflicts.

This essay by Nizar Kinaan, a pseudonym for obvious reasons, is one of those, revisiting the still-simmering Syrian conflict. The author returned to the coastal city of Latakia after years away and found a city, and country, drastically changed by the war. We called the essay “No Country for Young Men” because of the profound changes in gender roles wrought by the war.

“‘Where are the young men?’ I asked my friends in the cafe bar we were drinking in. ‘They are dead, in the army or they left like I should have done.’”

“The taboos against women working in certain specific jobs have definitely been broken,” wrote Kinaan, quoting a Syrian woman who said, “I am not saying all taboos have been completely shattered … but things have definitely shifted. Now women can work in most jobs, stay out late, and be a little bit more independent.”

Many will applaud that change, but the reasons that brought it about have destabilized the entire society. This is what makes Kinaan’s encounter with Latakia so interesting; he doesn’t judge what has happened by any moral standard except that of Syria itself. He doesn’t applaud changes in isolation without understanding what it took to make them change.

Letter from the co-directors.

A decade ago, the best AI systems in the world were unable to classify objects in images at a human level. AI struggled with language comprehension and could not solve math problems. Today, AI systems routinely exceed human performance on standard benchmarks.

Progress accelerated in 2023. New state-of-the-art systems like GPT-4, Gemini, and Claude 3 are impressively multimodal: They can generate fluent text in dozens of languages, process audio, and even explain memes. As AI has improved, it has increasingly forced its way into our lives. Companies are racing to build AI-based products, and AI is increasingly being used by the general public. But current AI technology still has significant problems. It cannot reliably deal with facts, perform complex reasoning, or explain its conclusions.

AI faces two interrelated futures. First, technology continues to improve and is increasingly used, having major consequences for productivity and employment. It can be put to both good and bad uses. In the second future, the adoption of AI is constrained by the limitations of the technology. Regardless of which future unfolds, governments are increasingly concerned. They are stepping in to encourage the upside, such as funding university R&D and incentivizing private investment. Governments are also aiming to manage the potential downsides, such as impacts on employment, privacy concerns, misinformation, and intellectual property rights.

As AI rapidly evolves, the AI Index aims to help the AI community, policymakers, business leaders, journalists, and the general public navigate this complex landscape. It provides ongoing, objective snapshots tracking several key areas: technical progress in AI capabilities, the community and investments driving AI development and deployment, public opinion on current and potential future impacts, and policy measures taken to stimulate AI innovation while managing its risks and challenges. By comprehensively monitoring the AI ecosystem, the Index serves as an important resource for understanding this transformative technological force.

On the technical front, this year’s AI Index reports that the number of new large language models released worldwide in 2023 doubled over the previous year. Two-thirds were open-source, but the highest-performing models came from industry players with closed systems. Gemini Ultra became the first LLM to reach human-level performance on the Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU) benchmark; performance on the benchmark has improved by 15 percentage points since last year. Additionally, GPT-4 achieved an impressive 0.97 mean win rate score on the comprehensive Holistic Evaluation of Language Models (HELM) benchmark, which includes MMLU among other evaluations.

Although global private investment in AI decreased for the second consecutive year, investment in generative AI skyrocketed. More Fortune 500 earnings calls mentioned AI than ever before, and new studies show that AI tangibly boosts worker productivity. On the policymaking front, global mentions of AI in legislative proceedings have never been higher. U.S. regulators passed more AI-related regulations in 2023 than ever before. Still, many expressed concerns about AI’s ability to generate deepfakes and impact elections. The public became more aware of AI, and studies suggest that they responded with nervousness.

Abstract: We propose a scheme for auditing differentially private machine learning systems with a single training run. This exploits the parallelism of being able to add or remove multiple training examples independently. We analyze this using the connection between differential privacy and statistical generalization, which avoids the cost of group privacy. Our auditing scheme requires minimal assumptions about the algorithm and can be applied in the black-box or white-box setting. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework by applying it to DP-SGD, where we can achieve meaningful empirical privacy lower bounds by training only one model. In contrast, standard methods would require training hundreds of models.

Are Emergent Abilities of Large Language Models a Mirage? Authors: Rylan Schaeffer · Brando Miranda · Sanmi Koyejo

Abstract: Recent work claims that large language models display emergent abilities, abilities not present in smaller-scale models that are present in larger-scale models. What makes emergent abilities intriguing is two-fold: their sharpness, transitioning seemingly instantaneously from not present to present, and their unpredictability , appearing at seemingly unforeseeable model scales. Here, we present an alternative explanation for emergent abilities: that for a particular task and model family, when analyzing fixed model outputs, emergent abilities appear due to the researcher’s choice of metric rather than due to fundamental changes in model behavior with scale. Specifically, nonlinear or discontinuous metrics produce apparent emergent abilities, whereas linear or continuous metrics produce smooth, continuous, predictable changes in model performance. We present our alternative explanation in a simple mathematical model, then test it in three complementary ways: we (1) make, test and confirm three predictions on the effect of metric choice using the InstructGPT/GPT-3 family on tasks with claimed emergent abilities, (2) make, test and confirm two predictions about metric choices in a meta-analysis of emergent abilities on BIG-Bench; and (3) show how to choose metrics to produce never-before-seen seemingly emergent abilities in multiple vision tasks across diverse deep networks. Via all three analyses, we provide evidence that alleged emergent abilities evaporate with different metrics or with better statistics, and may not be a fundamental property of scaling AI models.

Abstract : The current trend of scaling language models involves increasing both parameter count and training dataset size. Extrapolating this trend suggests that training dataset size may soon be limited by the amount of text data available on the internet. Motivated by this limit, we investigate scaling language models in data-constrained regimes. Specifically, we run a large set of experiments varying the extent of data repetition and compute budget, ranging up to 900 billion training tokens and 9 billion parameter models. We find that with constrained data for a fixed compute budget, training with up to 4 epochs of repeated data yields negligible changes to loss compared to having unique data. However, with more repetition, the value of adding compute eventually decays to zero. We propose and empirically validate a scaling law for compute optimality that accounts for the decreasing value of repeated tokens and excess parameters. Finally, we experiment with approaches mitigating data scarcity, including augmenting the training dataset with code data or removing commonly used filters. Models and datasets from our 400 training runs are freely available at https://github.com/huggingface/datablations .

Direct Preference Optimization: Your Language Model is Secretly a Reward Model Authors: Rafael Rafailov · Archit Sharma · Eric Mitchell · Christopher D Manning · Stefano Ermon · Chelsea Finn

Abstract: While large-scale unsupervised language models (LMs) learn broad world knowledge and some reasoning skills, achieving precise control of their behavior is difficult due to the completely unsupervised nature of their training. Existing methods for gaining such steerability collect human labels of the relative quality of model generations and fine-tune the unsupervised LM to align with these preferences, often with reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). However, RLHF is a complex and often unstable procedure, first fitting a reward model that reflects the human preferences, and then fine-tuning the large unsupervised LM using reinforcement learning to maximize this estimated reward without drifting too far from the original model. In this paper, we leverage a mapping between reward functions and optimal policies to show that this constrained reward maximization problem can be optimized exactly with a single stage of policy training, essentially solving a classification problem on the human preference data. The resulting algorithm, which we call Direct Preference Optimization (DPO), is stable, performant, and computationally lightweight, eliminating the need for fitting a reward model, sampling from the LM during fine-tuning, or performing significant hyperparameter tuning. Our experiments show that DPO can fine-tune LMs to align with human preferences as well as or better than existing methods. Notably, fine-tuning with DPO exceeds RLHF’s ability to control sentiment of generations and improves response quality in summarization and single-turn dialogue while being substantially simpler to implement and train.

Abstract: Modern climate projections lack adequate spatial and temporal resolution due to computational constraints. A consequence is inaccurate and imprecise predictions of critical processes such as storms. Hybrid methods that combine physics with machine learning (ML) have introduced a new generation of higher fidelity climate simulators that can sidestep Moore’s Law by outsourcing compute-hungry, short, high-resolution simulations to ML emulators. However, this hybrid ML-physics simulation approach requires domain-specific treatment and has been inaccessible to ML experts because of lack of training data and relevant, easy-to-use workflows. We present ClimSim, the largest-ever dataset designed for hybrid ML-physics research. It comprises multi-scale climate simulations, developed by a consortium of climate scientists and ML researchers. It consists of 5.7 billion pairs of multivariate input and output vectors that isolate the influence of locally-nested, high-resolution, high-fidelity physics on a host climate simulator’s macro-scale physical state. The dataset is global in coverage, spans multiple years at high sampling frequency, and is designed such that resulting emulators are compatible with downstream coupling into operational climate simulators. We implement a range of deterministic and stochastic regression baselines to highlight the ML challenges and their scoring. The data (https://huggingface.co/datasets/LEAP/ClimSim_high-res) and code (https://leap-stc.github.io/ClimSim) are released openly to support the development of hybrid ML-physics and high-fidelity climate simulations for the benefit of science and society.

Abstract: Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) models have exhibited exciting progress in capabilities, capturing the interest of practitioners and the public alike. Yet, while the literature on the trustworthiness of GPT models remains limited, practitioners have proposed employing capable GPT models for sensitive applications to healthcare and finance – where mistakes can be costly. To this end, this work proposes a comprehensive trustworthiness evaluation for large language models with a focus on GPT-4 and GPT-3.5, considering diverse perspectives – including toxicity, stereotype bias, adversarial robustness, out-of-distribution robustness, robustness on adversarial demonstrations, privacy, machine ethics, and fairness. Based on our evaluations, we discover previously unpublished vulnerabilities to trustworthiness threats. For instance, we find that GPT models can be easily misled to generate toxic and biased outputs and leak private information in both training data and conversation history. We also find that although GPT-4 is usually more trustworthy than GPT-3.5 on standard benchmarks, GPT-4 is more vulnerable given jailbreaking system or user prompts, potentially due to the reason that GPT-4 follows the (misleading) instructions more precisely. Our work illustrates a comprehensive trustworthiness evaluation of GPT models and sheds light on the trustworthiness gaps. Our benchmark is publicly available at https://decodingtrust.github.io/.

Test of Time

This year, following the usual practice, we chose a NeurIPS paper from 10 years ago to receive the Test of Time Award, and “ Distributed Representations of Words and Phrases and their Compositionality ” by Tomas Mikolov, Ilya Sutskever, Kai Chen, Greg Corrado, and Jeffrey Dean, won.

Published at NeurIPS 2013 and cited over 40,000 times, the work introduced the seminal word embedding technique word2vec. Demonstrating the power of learning from large amounts of unstructured text, the work catalyzed progress that marked the beginning of a new era in natural language processing.

Greg Corrado and Jeffrey Dean will be giving a talk about this work and related research on Tuesday, 12 Dec at 3:05 – 3:25 pm CST in Hall F.

New Year’s Resolution 2023: eBird

2023 essay resolution

  • Macaulay Library

New Year’s Resolutions are fun personal goals that can help you to improve your birding skills and stay engaged with eBird and birding. Whether you are a new or a longtime birder, you may be thinking about what new challenge to take on in 2023. Let this be the year to step up your eBirding! Here are a few of our favorite ideas for eBird resolutions:

Take the eBird plunge

Some active birders have yet to submit their first eBird checklist. Do you have a slight pang of guilt each time you receive an eBird Alert, feeling that you should be submitting your sightings too? It’s okay, many of us have been there. Let 2023 be a chance to share your bird reports with others, just as their reports have helped you.

The best way to start eBirding is with our free online course . Our online Help Center has even more tips to get started with eBird . Submit observations online or via eBird Mobile  to see just how easy it is to join the world’s largest birding community.

Find 10 bird species that are new for you

One area where eBird really excels is showing you where to find birds. Whether you want a map of sightings for any species of bird , or ideas for where to go birding near you , eBird has it. In 2023, use the eBird Explore Data and Target Species tools (also available on eBird Mobile ) to help you find ten new bird species—whether they’re new for your home, your county, your state, or your entire life. The free Merlin Bird ID  app can help you identify unfamiliar birds and add even more new species to your lists.

If you’ve run out of new species to find nearby, try crossing species off your photo and audio recording targets  instead.

Keep a year list (or beat last year’s list)

Keeping a year list  is one of the great pleasures of birding. Year lists are a New Year’s Resolution commitment to keep eBirding. You could try a year list for your state or province, but you might find that keeping a year list for your home or patch is an even more fun personal challenge. The smaller the area, the better you’ll get to know it— which makes adding new species all the more exciting!

Your year list for a country, state, county, patch, or your yard can be easily tracked with your Sightings Lists , the Yard/Patch tools , or eBird Mobile. As the year progresses, year lists become about strategy: how to find species that have eluded you thus far and beat your previous years’ species totals .

Enter your pre-eBird data

Is your life list larger than what is shown on your My eBird page? Maybe you have been meaning to enter old records that you’d like to have in eBird? Entering lists from the past is easy . When your lists are up-to-date in eBird, a whole new suite of cool, powerful tools become available: customized Needs Alerts , lists of Target Species  with maps of where to find them, and much more.

If you don’t have a start time, duration, or distance—don’t worry! All you need is an accurate location and date. Use the Historical protocol if you don’t have complete effort information (e.g., you know the start time, but not duration) and Incidental  is always a fine way to submit past observations when birding wasn’t your primary purpose.  Learn more about entering pre-eBird lists .

Fretting about moving over from another platform to eBird? We also have  easy ways to import from most other programs .

Adopt a patch

Anyone can adopt a patch ; think of it as any park, walking loop, or birdy area that you like to visit regularly. Start tracking the number of complete checklists you submit and see if you can beat your previous year’s checklist totals from that patch.

Don’t forget to check out the bar chart for your patch. Does your existing patch have gaps in the bar chart? Fill in those blanks!

2023 essay resolution

eBird “bar chart” for a patch, showing the occurrence of a species for each week of the year. Goal for 2023: submit an eBird checklist from the patch on the third week of June!

Fill gaps in an Illustrated Checklist

Visit the Illustrated Checklist for your county, state, province, or favorite local hotspot. Can you contribute any missing photos, or improve upon the existing ones? Audio recordings tend to be underrepresented in many places, so a good audio sample, even with your phone  can help fill a gap.

With a single click, you can check for gaps and plan your goals for 2023. For example,  British Columbia  has the largest species list in Canada (519 species!) But if you click the two rightmost numbers at the top of the page you can see that 27 species need photos and 173 need audio recordings.

By contributing missing media, the Macaulay Library  will become an even more powerful resource to assess how bird plumages, songs, molt, and more vary across the planet.

Take the “Checklist a Day” challenge

Step up to the ultimate eBirding challenge! This year’s  “Checklist a Day” challenge  will draw three winners from among those who submit an average of at least one complete checklist per day in 2023 (i.e., 365 lists total for 2023). If you want to try for 365 consecutive days—not required, but still fun to try—the eBird homepage helps track your “Checklist Streak” .

Checklist a Day Tip:  Try to get in the habit of doing at least one short count in your yard every day. Even a five-minute count helps to keep a pulse on the birds at a location that only you can survey.

Those of us at Team eBird have our own New Year’s Resolutions. In addition to our personal eBirding goals, we’ll remain committed to developing new features that make your observations, photos, audio recordings, and data even more valuable—and we’ll continue to highlight the best and most fun aspects of birding from around the world.

No matter what goals you set for yourself, we hope you’ll spend 2023 enjoying the birds around you. As part of the global eBird team, your birding becomes much more: a chance to share your observations with others, to bolster a worldwide appreciation for birds, and to contribute to new science and important conservation. We could not do it without your participation. Thank you!
