The 3 Best YouTube Channels for Funny Movie Commentary

Cinematic trailers often look incredible, with heart-pounding action shots and fast-paced cuts, but more often than not, the actual movie is a letdown (looking at you, “Suicide Squad”). One solution to this all-too-common situation is to hear from someone who has already watched the film and can tell you honestly if it is worth your time and money. Look no further than YouTube, where several successful channels create hugely entertaining videos that offer their own take on various feature films. There are many such channels on the streaming platform, but the following three in particular feature wildly entertaining content that projects a quick-witted attitude and an analytical sense of humor.

1. ScreenJunkies

ScreenJunkies is an online movie magazine as well as a YouTube channel owned by Fandom, a global entertainment brand. It currently has 6.74 million subscribers and one of its most popular series is “Honest Trailers,” with its most recent episode receiving over 1 million views. The series, which makes satirical trailers for both TV shows and movies, was nominated for the 2017 Emmy for outstanding short form variety series.

This channel’s first-ever “Honest Trailer” was presented by Ptolemy Slocum, but it was thought that while his voice was funny, it was not quite right for the channel’s content. He appeared alongside other narrators later on, but the first trailer, “Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace 3D,” was his only video as the sole commentator. Gannon Nickell was the series’s second narrator and worked on 12 videos before being called into military service and getting replaced by the current narrator, Jon Bailey.

The web series, which first went online in 2012, has been going on for a while now. What started as an original idea has gone a bit stale as other content creators have mimicked its premise. The more frequent uploading has also precipitated a decline in quality. Don’t get me wrong, though: “Honest Trailers” is still funny and one of the best sources for entertaining content; it’s just lost the edge that it used to have when it just started.

2. CinemaWins

Narrated by Lee Boucher, CinemaWins is excessively positive about the things it reviews. It doesn’t create parody trailers like ScreenJunkies; rather, it tallies the “wins,” or positive aspects, of the movie or TV series under review.

The About section of CinemaWins’ YouTube page reads: “Because liking things is more fun than not liking things,” which seems like pretty good reasoning. The page adds that the channel is meant to be an inversion of the more cynical CinemaSins, which is discussed below.

The videos generally advance through the film or TV series while displaying the number of “wins” on a counter on the screen, occasionally accompanied by a funny comment. This takes up most of the video time, but this segment is usually followed by a broader review of the movie or show.  The channel currently has 1.67 million subscribers, with the most recent video, “Everything GREAT about the Invisible Man! (2020),” receiving 196,000 views.

3. CinemaSins

If you prefer to balance out the favorable reviews of CinemaWins, then go to CinemaSins. Despite the names, the two aren’t managed by the same people. Just don’t take the criticisms of your favorite movie to heart, because it’s all in good fun. The “sins” are generally awarded for lousy writing, factual flaws, lousy acting or clichés, all while the movie or TV show is gleefully ripped to pieces.

Jeremy Scott and Chris Atkinson manage the channel and currently have 9.02 million subscribers. One of their more recent uploads, “Everything Wrong With Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 18 Minutes Or Less,” received more than 312,000 views. The channel’s catchphrase is “No Movie Is Without Sin,” accurately demonstrating that even the best movies aren’t perfect.

Unsurprisingly, CinemaSins has received a lot of backlash . A channel so relentlessly critical of films and TV shows, which are usually a source of pride for filmmakers, will obviously rub some people the wrong way. Critics have claimed that the channel fails as genuine criticism because it goes over the top in nitpicking faults and generally lacks understanding about the industry. It has also been called mean-spirited, with Jordan Vogt-Roberts , a director, tweeting: “Things like Cinema Sins simply suck the lifeblood of other people and are often just wrong about intent or how cinema works. It’s terrible.”

Some “sins” awarded are trivial, but on the other hand, the hyperbolic criticism is entertaining and can be balanced out by the upbeat positivity of CinemaWins. Still, some of the points that CinemaSins make are entirely valid and are helpful when deciding whether a movie ticket is worth the price.

The Fall Guy review – Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt dazzle in delightful action comedy

Two fantastic movie star turns lead this loving and supremely entertaining ode to stunt work based on the 80s TV series

B efore The Fall Guy even premiered at the SXSW film festival on Tuesday, there were boos in the audience – not for the film or stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, all staggeringly delightful, but for a preview of the festival’s tech conference, touting the promise of AI as a “great equalizer” that makes us “more human”. (Lol.) How funny, and unintentionally pointed, for such a statement to air before a film that serves as a joyful testament to the people who make movies, and particularly the tricky, bombastic art of human stunts. Even funnier that The Fall Guy, written by Drew Pearce and directed by Bullet Train’s David Leitch, itself takes some swings at AI in the script; it’s not really a spoiler to say that its deepfakes aren’t being used for good.

The Fall Guy, based on the 80s TV series, is an utterly charming, unpretentious rebuttal to the encroachment of digital effects in life and film (all due respect to VFX artists). It’s a celebration of blockbuster movies and their illusions of grandeur made by dozens and dozens of people working in concert, mostly below the line, and specifically the underappreciated work of stunt doubles. It’s also just a consistently good time, two hours of zingers with impeccable timing, two bona fide movie stars with palpable chemistry, several enjoyably meta send-ups of the business and, of course, plenty of crazy stunts.

Gosling, newly minted Oscars pop star and certified charm machine, is in peak comedy leading man form as Colt Seavers, a movie stunt veteran sidelined by an on-set injury that derailed his confidence. Jaded and hiding out in LA as a valet for a Mexican restaurant, Colt is reluctantly called back into action by big-time producer Gail (Hannah Waddingham) for the beleaguered Australian shoot of Metalstorm, a Comic-Con aiming sci-fi flick. The promise, and the problem, is that Metalstorm is directed by Jody (Blunt), the woman Colt loves and whom he shame-ghosted after his injury, leaving her hurt, confused and bitter.

The secondary problem is that Jody’s star and Colt’s longtime double, global action hero Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), is suspiciously missing, threatening the studio to pull the plug on her debut film and lifelong dream. In an attempt to save her film, Colt searches for him in Sydney and, lo and behold, finds his stunt work transcending the boundaries of set as shady characters and intrigue abound. In other words, the action figure version of Ken.

Leitch, a stuntman for over 20 years (at one point doubling for Brad Pitt) guides the film with a clear affection for movie sets and expertise in the trade. The Fall Guy offers an enjoyable exhibit of the stunt staples: pyrotechnics, rigging, trained dogs, car chases, car crashes, dummy weapons, fight choreography and more, all seamlessly blended into the fun-dumb story or Metalstorm, a loving parody of Cowboys & Aliens and Dune. It’s both a celebration and send-up of movie-set tropes: the overweening, self-serving producer in Gail, the feckless movie star in Tom Ryder, the lovably competent stunt coordinator in Dan (Winston Duke), the scheming, tread-upon assistant in Alma Milan (Stephanie Hsu). Also, the use of split screens, story structure, Tom Cruise, even the fact that there still isn’t an Oscars category for best stunt work. (Perhaps one would honor Fall Guy stuntman Logan Holiday, who broke a Guinness World Record for number of cannon rolls in a car – 8.5 – while filming.)

It’s all a fizzy, funny, convincingly romantic delight, a tribute to the craft of making big movies with big stunts that is heartfelt in its appreciation without taking itself too seriously. As such, the mystery plot is thin and borderline outlandish even for this level of silly, used more as a pretext for a final act stunt bonanza that’s a chef’s kiss on the under-sung heroics of the job. Still, Leitch has accomplished something rare in the realm of studio blockbusters: a big-budget film that caters, but does not pander, to its audience, that bets long on human labor, that leans into tongue-in-cheek humor without feeling sycophantic. (It helps that Gosling is surpassing Kenergy levels of comic precision.) The Fall Guy capably celebrates the sometimes literal heights reached on the big screen in the name of mass entertainment, and is right up there with the best of them.

The Fall Guy review: Ryan Gosling is a screwball delight in this sweat-drenched stunt spectacle

N ot to jinx it, but it looks as if the backlash against Hollywood’s overreliance on CGI has finally arrived. First came the high-profile failures of several digitally drenched, characterless sequels – think Aquaman 2 and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny . Then came the Sag-Aftra strikes , which saw actors push back against the use of AI to replicate their image, while multiple news stories surfaced alleging exploitative working conditions for VFX artists. And, now, suddenly, it seems in vogue for directors like Tim Burton to boast about the lack of CGI in their movies . Could it be that good, old-fashioned, practical moviemaking is finally back in style?

David Leitch’s The Fall Guy , then, is ideally timed. It’s a sweat-drenched spectacle that celebrates the harmonious union between heart-stopping stunt work and charismatic movie stars. Ryan Gosling, still high on that Kenergy , embraces his uncanny ability to be both the coolest and the goofiest guy in the room . He also brings a little screwball energy to the role of seasoned stuntman Colt Seavers, as he attempts to win back the heart of his director, Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt).

Jody’s leading man Tom Ryder ( Aaron Taylor-Johnson , channelling just a hint of Matthew McConaughey) is missing. He’s been in Australia, shooting Jody’s debut film Metalstorm , a sci-fi epic that sits precisely at the midpoint between Dune and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension . Producer Gail Meyer ( Ted Lasso ’s Hannah Waddingham ), sends Colt to track him down.

Colt ghosted Jody after an on-set accident left him first with a broken back, then with a bruised ego. See, his line of work demands that he take every hit with a thumbs up and a smile, then be disappeared into the moviemaking machine. No one talks about – or especially celebrates – the stunt performers who risk life and limb for far more famous people. At one point, Colt is asked if they hand out Oscars to people like him. His crestfallen “nope” speaks volumes. The Fall Guy ’s hope is that, once Colt’s somersaulted several vehicles and saved the day, the audience will share in that dismay.

In an industry first, Chris O’Hara has been credited as The Fall Guy ’s “stunt designer”, versus the traditional “stunt coordinator”, in an effort to underline his work’s artistry. And, true to that promise, the film features a number of practical showstoppers, among them a record-breaking vehicular cannon roll, some drug-fuelled hand-to-hand combat, and an explosive speed boat jump. Leitch treats these moments with adrenaline-doped reverence, akin to the shuttle launch in Armageddon or the jet takeoffs in Top Gun . Similarly, he purposefully draws attention to the wires, camera cranes, and small army of crew members required to make them possible.

Meanwhile, Drew Pearce’s script matches its zip with a self-referential touch. At its weakest, it’s overly reliant on pop culture: the scene of Colt sobbing to Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well” works, even if it’s a lesser iteration of what the TV series The Bear did with “Love Story”; there’s also an otherwise uncharacteristic, extremely poor taste joke about Amber Heard and Johnny Depp . But Blunt and Gosling have chemistry, and so does Gosling with everyone else, including co-stars Winston Duke, Stephanie Hsu and – somehow – a dog called Jean-Claude who only responds to French commands.

Ideologically, The Fall Guy is a film that pits craftsmanship against the fame-and-money-hungry – Colt is scanned by 360-degree cameras so that his face can be digitally replaced by Tom’s, all so he can later boast that he does his own stunts in interviews. If the film results in stunt performers gaining a little more respect from the public, that’s the ideal. If it merely reminds them how likeable Gosling is, that’s good, too.

The Fall Guy review: Ryan Gosling is at his goofiest in action-comedy

He’s just a stuntman-turned-hero.

Now, all that is just "sexy bacon bits" (to use the movie's own terms) surrounding the meat of David Leitch's ultimate goal, which is to create a heartfelt love letter to stunt work in Hollywood. Stuntmen are often invisible figures for audiences, but in this story they get to be the heroes as their essential work is explored and celebrated.

Their unbeatable champion is Ryan Gosling , who, following Barbie 's box-office hit last year, proves once again he was made for comedy. There is some Kenergy running through his character's veins, as his mix of endearing cluelessness and killer fighting moves completely steals the show.

The story, based on the Lee Majors-starring '80s television show, follows stuntman Colt Seavers (Gosling) as he decides to go back to work a year after a tragic injury on set.

The reason is Jody Moreno ( Emily Blunt ), a former lover who is about to make her debut as a filmmaker with global star Tom Ryder ( Aaron Taylor-Johnson ). According to Ryder's manager Gail Meyer ( Hannah Waddingham ), Jodie is in need of the star's former stuntman.

Although he seems content working as a parking guy in some random restaurant in Los Angeles, Colt faces his fears in order to pick up where he left off. Unfortunately, Jody is not so keen on resuming whatever it is they had: she is still hurt by how Colt shut her out completely after his injury.

All is not lost though — as the star of the movie mysteriously disappears, Colt is tasked to find him and save Jody's film. It's an opportunity to make it up to her, and to prove he can be the hero offscreen too.

Gosling is what makes everything click in this movie, as his good vibes with Emily Blunt make every explosion worthwhile. Blunt, radically changing register after her role in Oscar -winner Oppenheimer , is clearly having fun every step of the way. This Barbenheimer union feels fated.

The Fall Guy has the right amount of action, comedy and romance, a winning formula that never wavers despite an overcomplicated plot and some tone-deaf jokes (like one mentioning Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's divorce). Drew Pearce's script is not perfect, but Gosling and Blunt make up for any missteps.

What the story nails is that classic screwball-comedy feeling, which sees the main couple constantly bantering until their feelings are too strong to hide.

Not that Colt Seavers is hiding anything — in one of the funniest scenes, Gosling cries while singing All Too Well by Taylor Swift in a car, and it's only the actor's irresistible charisma that prevents the moment from being cringey.

Filled with all kinds of movie quotes (from Fast & Furious and Lord of the Rings to Notting Hill ) and offering a peek at how blockbusters are made, The Fall Guy is made for movie fans.

As a former stuntman himself, Leitch feels the right pick to lead this tribute, which portrays stunt work with incredible care and admiration. While drawing bits from his previous work, from Deadpool 2 's narrative voiceover to Bullet Train 's upbeat action sequences, he lets the stunts speak for themselves.

Shout out to the first sequence, a long "oner" (a scene with no cuts) that takes us through a movie set alongside Ryan Gosling and ends up with an impressive stunt performed by Gosling himself.

Of course a movie celebrating stunt work would include large amounts of practical effects instead of heavy CGI settings, and it's a joy to see.

The Fall Guy is released in UK cinemas on May 2.

The Fall Guy: Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt deliver a blast of pure high-wire showmanship

Loosely based on the 80s TV series of the same name, David Leitch’s film is witty, fresh, and propelled by nitro-blasts of movie-star charm

Around a quarter of an hour into The Fall Guy, I found myself wondering if I might be watching the antidote to everything that had gone wrong with popular cinema in the Past 15 years. That’s not to say that director David Leitch’s new film is perfect: in fact, it’s virtually saying the opposite, since it’s scrappy and freewheeling in all the ways that make a movie feel warm-blooded. 

It’s about a stuntman who becomes a scapegoat in a shady Hollywood conspiracy, and who has to leap, scuffle and rev his way to clearing his name – while his enemies try to bring him down with, among other things, a dastardly flourish of digital effects. (It’s based loosely on a 1980s American television series of the same name, featuring Lee Majors.)

It may not astonish you to hear that Leitch, is himself a former stunt performer. But it may knock you sideways you to hear that he was also behind the gruellingly smug action thriller Bullet Train , from 2022. The Fall Guy is everything that previous film was not: witty, fresh, inventive, winningly at ease in its own skin, and propelled by nitro-blasts of movie-star charm from its leads. 

Adding to his Ken-led portfolio of loveable lunks, Ryan Gosling is Colt Seavers, our man. Emily Blunt, meanwhile, is his former girlfriend Jody Monero, a long-time camera operator now in the director’s folding chair on Metalstorm, a corny Dune/Mad Max hybrid. For initially murky reasons, Colt finds himself whisked to Sydney, Australia, in order to appear in Jody’s film – having often doubled for its star, Aaron Taylor-Johnson ’s Tom Ryder, in the past. Though this Tom is a cosseted egomaniac for whom (supposedly) doing his own stunts is a core part of his personal brand, he definitely isn’t meant to be Tom Cruise , since the script makes a point of mentioning Cruise separately, by name, twice.

By day, on set, Colt and Jody put their prior heartache behind them and flirt up a storm. (An early scene in which they clear the air via loud-hailers under the thin pretext of a character motivation talk is uproarious, and is smartly allowed to play out at length.) Then after hours, Colt is enlisted by Ryder’s pterodactylish producer, played by Hannah Waddingham, to track down her A-list client, who has gone Awol days before the shoot. Individually, these plot strands might have felt spongily lightweight – but writer Drew Pearce braids them together into a bright and nostalgic sugar high, like the marshmallow cords of a flump. 

He also just about manages to rationalise the wide and ludicrous range of stunts Colt has to pull off both while on-set and miles from it, from a fist-fight in an overturned skip that’s being dragged at speed through central Sydney to jumping a speedboat over an exploding oil tank. Colt’s quietly satisfied look of I-knew-it after performing the latter sums up everything The Fall Guy gets right: this is pure old-fashioned high-wire showmanship, in which the risk is its own reward.

How do we live in a time where the Academy still hasn’t recognised Hollywood’s stunt community with an Oscar category? When films such as John Wick: Chapter 4 or Mad Max: Fury Road have pushed the boundaries of stunt excellence, it seems mystifying. Thankfully, David Leitch’s romcom/action blockbuster The Fall Guy — based on the 1980s TV series starring Lee Majors — is an apt reminder for its necessary inclusion. And it makes the case while having a lot of fun along the way.

Leitch, a former stunt performer, presents this as a movie-lover’s dream. It follows in the same self-referential footsteps as Bowfinger , Tropic Thunder and Babylon , a behind-the-scenes depiction of a Hollywood poking fun at itself. Almost every scene comes brilliantly infused with a tongue-in-cheek, meta in-joke about the filmmaking process. But you still feel a sense of warmth and affection in every frame. Each stunt sequence — be it a high-risk jump from a helicopter, an elaborate fight scene in a neon-lit nightclub, or a pyrotechnic car chase across a beach — is a death-defying tribute to the men and women behind the craft.

The real fun comes thanks to the dynamite pairing of Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt.

Ripping a page out of the Nice Guys playbook, its mystery-noir plot features an egocentric superstar in Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson, brilliant), a dodgy producer in Gail Meyer (a scene-stealing Hannah Waddingham) and a movie within a movie called ‘Metalstorm’ (think Mad Max meets Cowboys & Aliens ). What follows is an action-packed rabbit-hole of calamitous events, including hallucinatory unicorns after a spiked drink, and a will-they-won’t-they relationship, references to Notting Hill included. The script will hardly win awards for originality, but even in moments where the lightweight plot seems stretched beyond capacity, there are more than enough jokes and needle-drops to hold your interest.

The real fun of The Fall Guy comes thanks to the dynamite pairing of Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. Gosling, still riding high off his Kenergy, has by now mastered the art of playing the loveable rogue. Every mischievous smile and whip-smart comeback showcases why he’s at the top of his game. Blunt — no stranger to stunt-work herself — equally delights, with a nice line in deadpan delivery. Want to see her hilariously roast Gosling, almost literally, as he is forced to repeat the same fireball stunt again and again? She’s got you covered. Leitch plays to their strengths, and paired together, the duo summon some old-fashioned, feel-good romantic charm: in other words, a proper summer movie.
