  • Chris Stokel-Walker

You can also search for this author in PubMed   Google Scholar

Between overwork, underpayment and the pressure to publish, academics have plenty to worry about. Now there’s a fresh concern: ChatGPT , an artificial intelligence (AI) powered chatbot that creates surprisingly intelligent-sounding text in response to user prompts, including homework assignments and exam-style questions. The replies are so lucid, well-researched and decently referenced that some academics are calling the bot the death knell for conventional forms of educational assessment. How worried should professors and lecturers be?

The best AI chatbots: ChatGPT isn't the only one worth trying

screenshot-2024-03-27-at-4-28-37pm.png

Since the launch of ChatGPT , AI chatbots have been all of the rage because of their ability to do a wide range of tasks that can help you with your personal and work life. At your command, AI chatbots can write code , compose emails, draft a report,  generate art ,  write Excel formulas for you , and much more.

However, because ChatGPT  reached worldwide recognition , competitors were motivated to make their own versions, and, as a result, there are so many options on the market to choose from with different strengths, use cases, difficulty levels, and other nuances.

Also: The best AI image generators: Tested and reviewed

For the last year and a half, I have taken a deep dive into AI and have tested as many AI tools as possible -- including dozens of AI chatbots. Using my findings and those of other ZDNET AI experts, I have created a list of the best AI chatbots and AI writers on the market.

The list details everything you need to know before choosing your next AI assistant, including what it's best for, pros, cons, cost, its large language model (LLM), and more. So whether you are entirely new to AI chatbots, or have used plenty of tools, this list should help you discover a new chatbot you haven't used before.

What is the best AI chatbot right now?

Thanks to its sourcing abilities, free internet access, and advanced LLM model, Microsoft Copilot is my choice for the best AI chatbot. Keep reading to see how its features compare to others like ChatGPT, You.com, and more.

The best AI chatbots of 2024

Microsoft copilot, best ai chatbot overall.

  • Access to the internet
  • Links back to sources
  • Uses OpenAI's most advanced LLM
  • Grounded in Bing

In February last year, Microsoft unveiled a new AI-improved Bing, now known as Copilot, which runs on GPT-4  Turbo, the newest version of OpenAI's language model systems. As of May 4 of last year, Copilot moved from limited to open preview, meaning everyone can access it for free.

Also: What is Copilot (formerly Bing Chat)? Here's everything you need to know

When I use a chatbot, I typically reach for Copilot because it solves two major issues with ChatGPT: access to current events and linking back to the sources it retrieved for its answer for free. Copilot is also the only way to access OpenAI's most advanced LLM -- GPT-4 Turbo -- for free.

Copilot is free to use and offers other features that make it an attractive alternative, including multi-modal inputs, image generation within the chatbot, and a standalone app.

Copilot f eatures:  OpenAI's most advanced LLM, GPT-4 Turbo | Has access to the internet | Works like a search engine with information on current events | Free

Best original AI chatbot

  • Writing skills
  • STEM knowledge
  • Conversational
  • Not always available
  • Not connected to the internet

ChatGPT is a conversational AI chatbot  by OpenAI that can produce text based on any prompt you input, generating emails, essays, poems, grocery lists, letters, and much more.

In addition to writing for you, ChatGPT can chat about simple or complex topics such as "What are colors?" or "What is the meaning of life?" ChatGPT is also proficient in STEM and can write and debug code  and solve complex math equations.

Using ChatGPT is easier than ever since OpenAI stopped requiring users to log in . Now, you can start chatting with ChatGPT simply by visiting its website like you would with Google.

Also:  How to use ChatGPT

ChatGPT was released in November 2022, and because of its  massive success , it became the blueprint for many other chatbots to enter the scene. Therefore, if you are interested in AI chatbots, you'll likely want to try the original tool that began the craze -- ChatGPT.

Downsides of the chatbot include that it is sometimes at capacity due to its immense popularity, doesn't have access to the internet, and has a January 2022 knowledge cutoff.

I still reach for ChatGPT because, despite its limitations, it is an incredibly capable chatbot. However, when I do, I ensure my queries do not rely on the most recent information to be accurate. For example, some good use cases to use ChatGPT for are brainstorming text or coding.

ChatGPT features:  Uses OpenAI's GPT-3.5 or GPT-4 (if subscribed) | Can generate text, solve math problems, and code | Impressive conversation capabilities | Free to the public right now

Anthrophic's Claude

Best ai chatbot for summarizing documents.

  • Upload document support
  • Chat controls
  • Light and dark mode
  • Unclear usage cap
  • Knowledge cutoff

Anthropic launched its first AI assistant, Claude, in February 2023. Now the tool has secured a spot as one of the best chatbots. Like the other leading competitors, Anthropic can conversationally answer prompts for anything you need assistance with, including coding, math, writing, research, and more.

Also: 4 things Claude AI can do that ChatGPT can't

I think the biggest advantage of this chatbot is that it can accept document uploads to help read, analyze, and summarize files. To upload a file, click on the paper clip icon next to the text box and click on the document you want to upload. Then, conversationally ask for help you want with the document, including document summaries or clarifications on specific topics found within the document.

Also: This free tool from Anthropic helps you create better prompts for your AI chatbot

Claude is in free open beta and, as a result, has both context window and daily message limits that can vary based on demand. If you want to use the chatbot regularly, upgrading to Claude Pro may be a better option, as it offers at least five times the usage limits compared to the free version for $20 a month.

Claude features:   Powered by Claude 3 model family | Accepts document uploads | Trained with information up to early 2023 | Free

Perplexity.ai

The best ai chatbot for prompt ideation.

  • Links to sources
  • Access to internet
  • Paid subscription required for GPT-4 access
  • some irrelevant suggestions

Perplexity AI is a free AI chatbot connected to the internet that provides sources and has an enjoyable UI. As soon as you visit the site , using the chatbot is straightforward. Type your prompt into the "ask anything" box to get started. The first time I visited this chatbot, I was able to get started within seconds.

On top of the text box, the chatbot states, "Where knowledge begins," and the title could not be more fitting.

As soon as you click on the textbox, the tool has a series of suggested prompts mostly rooted in news. The chatbot also has suggested prompts underneath the box on evergreen topics. All you have to do is click on the suggestions to learn more about the topic and chat about it. Additionally, Perplexity provides related topic questions you can click on to keep the conversation going.

Also:  ChatGPT vs. Microsoft Copilot vs. Gemini: Which is the best AI chatbot?

Because of the extensive prompts that the tool gives users to try, this is a great chatbot for taking deep dives into topics that you wouldn't have necessarily thought of before, encouraging discovery and experimentation. I dived into some random topics, including the history of birthday cakes, and I enjoyed every second.

Other perks include the fact that there is an app for both iOS and Android, allowing you to also tinker with the chatbot while you're on the go, footnotes are provided after every answer with sources you can visit, and the answers from the chatbot nearly always include photos and graphics.

Perplexity AI features:  OpenAI GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 for subscribers | Has access to the internet and current events | Provides prompt suggestions to get chats started | Free

Best AI chatbot for businesses and marketers

  • 50 different writing templates
  • Copyediting features
  • Plagiarism checker
  • Need a subscription to try

Jasper is a tool exclusively meant for users looking to incorporate an AI chatbot into their workflow because there is no free plan and you can't otherwise access the chatbot. For example, when I tried using it myself, I was met with dead ends unless I subscribed. The least expensive option, the Creator plan, is geared towards freelancers and solo-preneurs and is $49 a month. However, the investment may be worth it if you rely on an AI chatbot to generate copy for your business.

Also: ChatGPT vs. Copilot: Which AI chatbot is better for you?

With Jasper, you can input a prompt for what you want written, and it will write it for you, just like ChatGPT would. The major difference with Jasper is that it has extensive tools to produce better copy. Jasper can check for grammar and plagiarism and write in over 50 templates, including blog posts, Twitter threads, video scripts, and more. Best AI chatbot that functions as a search engine

  • Readily available
  • Source Citing
  • Some answers stronger than others
  • Subscription required for GPT-4 access

You.com (previously known as YouChat) is an AI assistant that functions similarly to a search engine. Like Google, you can enter any question or topic you'd like to learn information on, and immediately be met with real-time web results, in addition to a conversational response.

Also: YouPro lets me access every popular premium AI chatbot for $20/month - but there's a catch

For example, when I asked, "Can you share some pictures of adorable dog breeds?" the chatbot provided six different web links, seven different pictures it pulled from the web, a conversational answer, and related news, as seen in the photo.

The chatbot can also provide technical assistance, with answers to anything you input, including math, coding, translating, and writing prompts. A huge pro for this chatbot is that, because it lacks popularity, you can hop on any time and ask away.

One of the biggest standout features is that with YouPro, its premium subscription, you can toggle between the most popular AI models on the market using the Custom Model Selector.

The AI models included in Custom Model Selector include OpenAI's GPT-4 and GPT-4 Turbo; Anthropic's Claude Instant, Claude 2, Claude 3 Opus, Clause 3 Sonnet, and Claude 3 Haiku; Google's Gemini Pro; and Zephyr (uncensored).

That means that, within one chatbot, you can experience some of the most advanced models on the market, which is pretty convenient if you ask me.

You.com features:  GPT-4 with subscription | Lists sources for the text it generates | Unlike most other Chatbots, uses Google sources | Free

Chatsonic by Writesonic

Best ai chatbot for article writers.

  • Variety of use cases
  • Need to sign in
  • A bit of a lag

Chatsonic is a dependable AI chatbot. It functions much like ChatGPT, allowing users to input prompts for assistance on many tasks. However, it includes the ability to web search, generate images, and access PDF assistance, which ChatGPT lacks.

The Writesonic platform offers tools that help generate stories, including Instant Article Writer, which creates an article from a single click; Article Rewriter, which rephrases existing content; and Article Writer 5, which generates articles using ranking competitors.

Other tools that facilitate the creation of articles include SEO Checker and Optimizer, AI Editor, Content Rephraser, Paragraph Writer, and more. There is a free version, which gets you access to some of the features. However, the free version has a 50 generations per day limit. The monthly cost starts at $12 but can reach $250, depending on the number of words and users needed.

Chatsonic features:  Powered by GPT-3.5 or GPT-4 depending on subscription | Aware of current events, whereas ChatGPT is trained up to 2021 | Extensive feature suite, including voice dictation and image generation | Starts at $12 per month

Gemini (formerly Google Bard)

Best ai chatbot if you're a loyal google user.

  • Access to Google
  • Good text editing skills
  • Can't help much with code

Gemini is Google's conversational AI chatbot that functions the most similarly to Copilot, sourcing its answers from the web, providing footnotes, and even generating images within its chatbot. Since its initial release in March 2023, the chatbot has undergone several upgrades, with the latest version being the most optimized it has ever been.

Also: What is Google's Gemini AI tool (formerly Bard)? Everything you need to know

The highlight of this chatbot is that it is rooted in Google technology, search engines, and applications. Loyal Google users will feel familiar with the chatbot's UI and offerings. For example, unlike most of the chatbots on this list, Google does not use an LLM in the GPT series but instead uses a model made by Google.

"Gemini is slowly becoming a full Google experience thanks to Extensions folding the wide range of Google applications into Gemini," said ZDNET writer Maria Diaz when reviewing the chatbot. "Gemini users can add extensions for Google Workspace, YouTube, Google Maps, Google Flights, and Google Hotels, giving them a more personalized and extensive experience."

If you subscribe to Google's new 'AI Premium Plan' , you not only get access to the most advanced Google models in Gemini, such as Ultra 1.0, but you also get access to Gemini for Workspace, previously known as  Duet AI,  which infuses Google's AI assistance throughout its productivity apps, including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Meet.

Gemini features:  Powered by a finetuned version of Gemini Pro | Includes a "Google it" feature | Generates clear text and images quickly | Free

Socratic by Google

Best ai chatbot for kids and students.

  • Educational
  • Easy to use
  • Doesn't write text
  • No desktop version

If you want your child to use AI to lighten their workload, but still have some limits, Socratic is for you. With Socratic, children can type in any question about what they learn in school. The tool will then generate a conversational, human-like response with fun, unique graphics to help break down the concept.

"It's a powerful studying tool that could help students double-check their homework, or get across the last hurdle if a question or formula just isn't making sense. And using the app is as easy as using  Snapchat  or talking to Siri," said former ZDNET contributor Jason Cipriani, when reviewing the app.

Also: How Google Socratic can help you with your homework

The app, available on the App Store and the Google App Store, also has a feature that lets your kid scan their worksheet to get a specially curated answer. The app does have some limitations; for example, it will not just write an essay or story when prompted. However, this feature could be positive because it curbs your child's temptation to get a chatbot, like ChatGPT, to write their essay.

Socratic features:  From Google | Type in any question to generate a response | Includes fun graphics | Supports scanning worksheets to get a specially curated answer | Free

HuggingChat

Best open-source chatbot.

  • Cutomizable
  • Intermediate/advanced skills requires
  • Required to create an account

As seen by the list above, plenty of great chatbot options are on the market. However, if you are on the search for a chatbot that serves your use case specifically, you can always build an entirely customizable new one. HuggingChat is an open-source chatbot developed by Hugging Face that can be used as a regular chatbot or customized for your needs.

Also :  Want to build your own AI chatbot? Say hello to open-source HuggingChat

As ZDNET's David Gewirtz unpacked in his hands-on article , you may not want to depend on HuggingChat as your go-to primary chatbot. However, it is a good interface to build your own chatbot.

As Gewirtz said: "If you want something that you control, you can use HuggingChat to build a chatbot where you have visibility into every aspect of its functioning. You can choose to make that chatbot available online to other users and provide transparency to all users."

Socratic features:  Clean, Chat-GPT inspired interface | Entirely customizable | Great for developers or AI fanatics | Secure alternative | Free

What is the best AI chatbot?

The best overall AI chatbot is Copilot due to its exceptional performance, versatility, and free availability. It uses OpenAI's cutting-edge GPT-4 language model, making it proficient in various language tasks, including writing, summarization, translation, and conversation. Moreover, it works like a search engine with information on current events.

Another advantage of Copilot is its availability to the public at no cost. Despite its immense popularity, Copilot remains free, making it an incredible resource for students, writers, and professionals who need a reliable and free AI chatbot.

Although there are occasional capacity blocks, OpenAI is working on releasing a professional version of ChatGPT that will be quicker and always accessible at a monthly cost.

Which AI chatbot is right for you?

While Copliot is my personal favorite, your use case may be hyper-specific or have certain demands. If you need a constant, reliable AI chatbot, other alternatives might be better suited for you. If you want an AI chatbot that produces clean, reliable, business-ready copy, for example, then Jasper is for you. If you want to play around with an AI chatbot that isn't always at capacity, YouChat might be the best option.

Lastly, if there is a child in your life, Socratic might be worth checking out. See our breakdown below:

Factors to consider when choosing a chatbot

Since there are so many chatbots on the market, picking the right one can get confusing. Some factors to consider to help narrow down those options are:

  • Large Language Model (LLM)
  • Knowledge cutoff
  • Access to the internet
  • Linking to sources
  • Best use cases

How did I choose these AI chatbots?

To curate the list of best AI chatbots and AI writers, I looked at the capabilities of each program, including the individual uses each program would excel at. As an AI reporter, I was also sure to test each one myself. Other factors I looked at were reliability, availability, and cost.

  • Individual use case: AI chatbots have many use cases, often acting as a tool for productivity and easier workflow. I included a variety that can serve as ideation, education, and content creation tools.
  • Reliability: I kept information accuracy a priority during my testing.
  • Availability : ChatGPT is popular, but not always available. I selected alternatives that don't have a user limit and are available at all times.
  • Cost: Many of these AI programs are free, but some require monthly memberships. I included a mix of both, keeping budget-friendliness in mind.

What is an AI chatbot?

An AI chatbot (also called AI writer) refers to a type of artificial intelligence-powered program capable of generating written content from a user's input prompt. AI chatbots can write anything from a rap song to an essay upon a user's request. The extent of what each chatbot can write about depends on its capabilities, including whether it is connected to a search engine.

How do AI chatbots work?

AI chatbots use language models to train the AI to produce human-like responses. Some tools are connected to the web and that capability provides up-to-date information, while others depend solely on the information upon which they are trained.

How much do AI chatbots cost?

AI chatbot programs vary in cost with some being entirely free and others costing as much as $600 a month. Many like ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and YouChat are free to use.

What is the difference between an AI chatbot and an AI writer?

The main difference between an AI chatbot and an AI writer is the type of output they generate and their primary function.

In the past, an AI writer was used specifically to generate written content, such as articles, stories, or poetry, based on a given prompt or input. An AI writer's output is in the form of written text that mimics human-like language and structure. On the other hand, an AI chatbot is designed to conduct real-time conversations with users in text or voice-based interactions. The primary function of an AI chatbot is to answer questions, provide recommendations, or even perform simple tasks, and its output is in the form of text-based conversations.

While the terms AI chatbot and AI writer are now used interchangeably by some, the original distinction was that an AI writer was used for generating written content while an AI chatbot was used for conversational purposes. However, with the introduction of more advanced AI technology, such as ChatGPT, the line between the two has become increasingly blurred. Some AI chatbots are now capable of generating text-based responses that mimic human-like language and structure, similar to an AI writer.

The word "AI" has been named the word of the year. ChatGPT has made waves since its introduction in late 2022. With every new iteration of this powerful tool, users have found innovative ways to use it to simplify and speed up their work.

Now, there are many AI writing assistants on the market, competing with ChatGPT to become the king of AI-powered writing tools. These new tools aim to simplify the writing process by generating long-form content, researching keywords, creating images from text, and more. Many bloggers are using these tools to improve their content and save time.

However, there are some drawbacks to using AI writers. The content generated may require additional editing to ensure it's polished and accurate. AI-generated content may also lack the unique voice and style a human writer can provide. Despite this, the benefits of using AI writers, such as cost and time savings, often outweigh these minor drawbacks.

In conclusion, AI writers are an excellent solution for creating high-quality content without spending countless hours or breaking the bank. With numerous writing tools available today, content creation can be easily sped up and simplified. ❌ You need social networking-specific tools:  GrammarlyGO doesn't offer these types of tools, at least for now.

Even in beta, GrammarlyGO is an excellent addition to an already powerful Al-based writing tool. You can use it to become a much better writer in just a few steps.

Check out our in-depth GrammarlyGo review for a closer look at the service, and see why it's our top AI writer pick for 2024.

And now, they've taken it up a notch by introducing GrammarlyGO, a feature-packed add-on that comes bundled with the rest of the software.

To get the most out of GrammarlyGO, you must understand how Grammarly works, as the two are closely intertwined. When using GrammarlyGO, it's essential to remember the number of prompts available to you, which varies depending on the plan you choose. Whenever you ask Grammarly to improve your text, one prompt is used, regardless of whether you use the suggestion. Grammarly Free users get access to 100 prompts per month, while Grammarly Premium subscribers receive 1,000 prompts per month. For Grammarly Business users, the number goes up to 1,000 prompts per user every month.

GoogleGO AI features are classified into five categories: ideate, compose, reply, rewrite, and personalize. The ideate feature helps you generate article ideas that are exciting and thought-provoking. With Grammarly's assistance, you can develop topics like "Five ways to motivate employees" or "Name five great topics about fall" that can capture the reader's attention and spark their interest.

The compose feature is perfect when you want Grammarly to help you write something from scratch. For instance, you could ask Grammarly to help you write an announcement about your engagement or a cover letter for a new job. The more information you provide, the better the results, and GrammarlyGO can help you create a masterpiece with its advanced suggestions and insights. Adding details like the name of your fiancé and the engagement date can make your announcement even more unique. In contrast, information about the job you're applying for can make your cover letter more effective.

If you're unsure how to respond to a message, Grammarly's reply feature can save the day. You can ask Grammarly to answer questions like "What should I say to Brent about the new job?" or "How can I congratulate Tom and Becky on their upcoming nuptials?" With Grammarly's superior writing skills, you can craft an engaging, effective, and impressive response.

With these incredible features, GrammarlyGO can help you take your writing to new heights and unleash your creativity.

3. Articleforge

✔️ You use WordPress heavily: Articleforge works great with WordPress; get started in just a few steps.

✔️ You want package customization:  The more you're willing to pay, the more words you can generate each month. It's flexible.

✔️ You need marketing-based tools:  Offers SEO optimization, content in bulk, and more.

❌  You don't want to self-edit : Articleforge may require more post-generation editing than other options, which could slow you down.

❌ You don't want to deal with duplicates:  Yes, sometimes Articleforge repeats suggestions.

❌  If you don't want to spend more for a monthly subscription: It's cheaper to buy this on a yearly basis, and that might not be a commitment you're willing to make.

Articleforge utilizes deep learning and AI to improve content over time, though heavy editing and fact-checking are often necessary.

Check out our in-depth Articleforge review for more information.

Articleforge is a tool that can greatly help speed up the writing process for users. It is a valuable resource for those who need to generate content quickly but do not have the time or resources to do so themselves. However, it is important to note that it is not a replacement for an experienced writer or editor. While it can provide recommendations for titles and automate SEO and WordPress publishing, it is not designed to produce ready-to-publish content.

One of the benefits of Articleforge is that it is available in seven languages, making it ideal for international blogs or multi-language sites. Users simply need to enter a few keywords and the topic they want to cover, and the platform will generate content in under 60 seconds. This generated content will use the provided keywords and cover the desired topic.

In addition to its quick and easy content generation, Articleforge also offers various integrations, including MS Word and WordPress integrations. The platform also provides integrations with other software systems like SEO AutoPilot, CyberSEO, RankerX, SEnuke TNG, and more. These integrations are easy to use, thanks to the API key offered by the platform.

While the platform is a convenient tool for creating content, its output quality falls short of expectations. As with any automated system, fact-checking is necessary for the majority of the content offered by the platform. The platform does offer better output quality with customized input. However, extensive testing is required, which can quickly exhaust the "word meter."

Overall, Articleforge can significantly expedite the writing process and help overcome writer's block. It is advisable to test it out and find a balance between the platform and tailored input to yield superior results. While it should not be relied upon as a sole source of content, using it in conjunction with other resources can help users quickly generate high-quality content.

✔️ You're a freelancer:  There's a package just for you.

❌  You want to pay a lower price:  Some have criticized Writesonic for being too expensive. That's true with the Smart Team options

❌  You need more third-party integrations:  It doesn't really place nice with other software tools, which could add some time to your work.

❌ You don't like tackling a learning curve : Like others on this list, there's a slighter higher learning curve with this one

Writesonic is an expansive AI writing platform with an intuitive interface and versatile templates for all content creation scenarios.

Writesonic is an innovative content creation platform that provides users with various features and tools to generate high-quality, engaging content. One of the most impressive features of Writesonic is its versatility - it supports over 25 languages, including English, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Chinese, and more. This is a significant advantage for businesses that operate in multiple regions and need to produce content in different languages.

Another notable feature of Writesonic is its tone of voice customization tool. Users can choose from various tones, including "Excited," "Creative," and more. This feature adds a unique twist to the content, tailoring it to the user's needs. However, it's essential to note that the tone of voice feature may require additional editing to ensure the content is clear and coherent.

Regarding website copywriting, Writesonic provides users with an impressive range of tools. It can create landing pages, SEO meta descriptions, and feature-rich headers and subheaders. Additionally, it allows users to create social media ads on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google . Content creators can also benefit from Writesonic's blog writing, point expansion, and text analysis tools, which can rephrase the content and improve its readability.

The platform also offers e-commerce copy creation and popular copywriting formulas, such as the "AIDA" and "Pain-Agitate-Solution" formulas. These formulas are tried and tested approaches to writing compelling, persuasive content that resonates with readers.

However, it's essential to note that the content generated by Writesonic may require significant editing from the user. While the platform does an excellent job of generating content, it's essential to ensure it's clear, coherent, and tailored to the user's needs. If you're looking for a completely hands-off approach to content creation, Writesonic may not be the best option. However, for businesses that need to generate high-quality, engaging content quickly, Writesonic is an excellent choice.

Check out our in-depth AI-Writer review to see if it's the solution for you.

AI-Writer is a word generator that is easily accessible and is popular among freelancers and bloggers. It may not be as extensive as Anyword or CopyAI, which are primarily aimed at marketing and sales, but it serves its intended audience well.

One of the most significant advantages of AI-Writer is its unparalleled sourcing capabilities. It is the only AI content generator that cites sources for "everything it writes." Additionally, it updates its sources frequently, ensuring that any article generated by it sources the latest information on the subject. This is a significant advantage, particularly for those who are writing about current events or trending topics. With AI-Writer, writers can create content that is well-researched and accurate, without having to spend hours scouring the internet for sources.

Another significant advantage of AI-Writer is that it recognizes that not all types of content require sourcing. For instance, op-eds or personal essays don't usually require sources. AI-Writer recognizes this and hides sources and links from the main results page, making it easier for writers to focus on their content and not worry about sources.

One of the drawbacks of using AI-Writer is that its extensive sourcing process can cause a minor delay in generating results compared to other AI writing tools. Although this may not be a significant issue, the noticeable delay should be mentioned. For instance, alternative tools like GrammarlyGO offer results without hesitation. However, it is worth noting that the issue with AI-Writer is primarily due to its thorough sourcing process.

In conclusion, AI-Writer is an excellent tool for freelancers and bloggers who want to create high-quality content. It excels in sourcing capabilities, making it a go-to tool for writers who need well-researched and accurate content. Its ability to recognize when sourcing is not required is also an added advantage. While it may not be the fastest tool on the market, its thorough sourcing process is worth the wait.

TechRadar's AI writer rankings

Numerous AI writing solutions are already available in the market, and we can expect more to arrive in the future. Have a look at our rankings of popular services below, and also check out the honorable mentions that currently can’t compete with the top services available.

What is an AI writer?

An AI writer is a revolutionary tool, capable of creating text and content without human help; it utilizes algorithms and machine learning to generate various AI content. From data-driven, high-value pieces to conversion-focused content perfect for marketing campaigns, AI writers can easily create just about any content.

As AI writing assistants gain exposure to various forms of real-world information, they gain proficiency in generating natural-sounding output. With their data coming from human sources, the output created also has a human-like quality. Much like how humans rely on existing content to craft something new, AI content tools scour the web for relevant data to fulfill the user's instructions, thus creating original content.

This, in a nutshell, explains what AI writing is and how it functions.

How to choose the best AI writer for you?

Let’s get this out of the way. Whichever platform you choose, you will have to do some editing, if you want to create useful texts.

Here are some of the factors you should consider when choosing the right tool for you:

1. Ease of use

Tools that don’t require technical knowledge or prior experience should be on the top of your list. Investment in good UI means that other aspects of the tool are also likely to be of a higher quality.

While this may not be popular with everyone, the price should play a major role in deciding which tool to go for. Some are simply overpriced while not offering much more than their lower-priced competition. Pay attention to the amount of content each price plan offers.

3. High-quality output

Despite the fact that, in the end, you will be editing the texts and images the tool creates, having a tool that creates high-quality content will mean less time spent on fixing mistakes and editing.

4. Integrations

If you’re running a blog or business and have been doing so for some time, you probably have your set of tools that you use for writing content. Making sure that the new AI platform syncs well with your existing toolbox can be essential for how long and how well you utilize the AI tool.

The list above is not exhaustive, but does offer a great starting point in your quest to find the best AI writing tool for your needs.

During our assessment, we’ve evaluated various aspects such as the number of writing templates, categories, recipes, number of languages supported, grammar checkers, etc. Our goal was to create an extensive list of AI writing assistants that offer much more than simple rewording features.

We tested the overall capabilities of the AI software, the tool's interface and ease of use, monthly article limits, SEO optimization features, and pricing, among other aspects.

In addition, we gave each platform a test article to write for us (a simple topic) and checked its sentence structure and content relevance.

‘Full-on robot writing’: the artificial intelligence challenge facing universities

AI is becoming more sophisticated, and some say capable of writing academic essays. But at what point does the intrusion of AI constitute cheating?

“Waiting in front of the lecture hall for my next class to start, and beside me two students are discussing which AI program works best for writing their essays. Is this what I’m marking? AI essays?”

The tweet by historian Carla Ionescu late last month captures growing unease about what artificial intelligence portends for traditional university assessment. “No. No way,” she tweeted. “Tell me we’re not there yet.”

But AI has been banging on the university’s gate for some time now.

In 2012, computer theorist Ben Goertzel proposed what he called the “robot university student test” , arguing that an AI capable of obtaining a degree in the same way as a human should be considered conscious.

Goertzel’s idea – an alternative to the more famous “Turing test” – might have remained a thought experiment were it not for the successes of AIs employing natural language processing (NLP): most famously, GPT-3 , the language model created by the OpenAi research laboratory.

Two years ago, computer scientist Nassim Dehouche published a piece demonstrating that GPT-3 could produce credible academic writing undetectable by the usual anti-plagiarism software.

“[I] found the output,” Dehouche told Guardian Australia, “to be indistinguishable from an excellent undergraduate essay, both in terms of soundness and originality. [My article] was initially subtitled, ‘The best time to act was yesterday, the second-best time is now’. Its purpose was to call for an urgent need to, at the very least, update our concepts of plagiarism.”

Ben Goertzel

He now thinks we’re already well past the time when students could generate entire essays (and other forms of writing) using algorithmic methods.

“A good exercise for aspiring writers,” he says, “would be a sort of reverse Turing test: ‘Can you write a page of text that could not have been generated by an AI, and explain why?’ As far as I can see, unless one is reporting an original mathematics theorem and its proof, it is not possible. But I would love to be proven wrong.”

Many others now share his urgency. In news and opinion articles, GPT-3 has convincingly written on whether it poses a threat to humanity ( it says it doesn’t ), and about animal cruelty in the styles of both Bob Dylan and William Shakespeare.

A 2021 Forbes article about AI essay writing culminated in a dramatic mic-drop: “this post about using an AI to write essays in school,” it explained, “was written using an artificial intelligence content writing tool”.

Of course, the tech industry thrives on unwarranted hype. Last month S Scott Graham in a piece for Inside Higher Education described encouraging students to use the technology for their assignments with decidedly mixed results. The very best, he said, would have fulfilled the minimum requirements but little more. Weaker students struggled, since giving the system effective prompts (and then editing its output) required writing skills of a sufficiently high level to render the AI superfluous.

“I strongly suspect,” he concluded, “full-on robot writing will always and forever be ‘just around the corner’.”

That might be true, though only a month earlier, Slate’s Aki Peritz concluded precisely the opposite, declaring that “with a little bit of practice, a student can use AI to write his or her paper in a fraction of the time that it would normally take”.

Nevertheless, the challenge for higher education can’t be reduced merely to “full-on robot writing”.

Universities don’t merely face essays or assignments entirely generated by algorithms: they must also adjudicate a myriad of more subtle problems. For instance, AI-powered word processors habitually suggest alternatives to our ungrammatical phrases. But if software can algorithmically rewrite a student’s sentence, why shouldn’t it do the same with a paragraph – and if a paragraph, why not a page?

At what point does the intrusion of AI constitute cheating?

Deakin University’s Prof Phillip Dawson specialises in digital assessment security .

He suggests regarding AI merely as a new form of a technique called cognitive offloading.

“Cognitive offloading,” he explains, is “when you use a tool to reduce the mental burden of a task. It can be as simple as writing something down so you don’t have to try to remember it for later. There have long been moral panics around tools for cognitive offloading, from Socrates complaining about people using writing to pretend they knew something, to the first emergence of pocket calculators.’

Dawson argues that universities should make clear to students the forms and degree of cognitive offloading permitted for specific assessments, with AI increasingly incorporated into higher level tasks.

“I think we’ll actually be teaching students how to use these tools. I don’t think we’re going to necessarily forbid them.”

The occupations for which universities prepare students will, after all, soon also rely on AI, with the humanities particularly affected. Take journalism, for instance. A 2019 survey of 71 media organisations from 32 countries found AI already a “significant part of journalism”, deployed for news gathering (say, sourcing information or identifying trends), news production (anything from automatic fact checkers to the algorithmic transformation of financial reports into articles) and news distribution (personalising websites, managing subscriptions, finding new audiences and so on). So why should journalism educators penalise students for using a technology likely to be central to their future careers?

University students

“I think we’ll have a really good look at what the professions do with respect to these tools now,” says Dawson, “and what they’re likely to do in the future with them, and we’ll try to map those capabilities back into our courses. That means figuring out how to reference them, so the student can say: I got the AI to do this bit and then here’s what I did myself.”

Yet formulating policies on when and where AI might legitimately be used is one thing – and enforcing them is quite another.

Dr Helen Gniel directs the higher education integrity unit of the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), the independent regulator of Australian higher education.

Like Dawson, she sees the issues around AI as, in some senses, an opportunity – a chance for institutions to “think about what they are teaching, and the most appropriate methods for assessing learning in that context”.

Transparency is key.

“We expect institutions to define their rules around the use of AI and ensure that expectations are clearly and regularly communicated to students.”

She points to ICHM, the Institute of Health Management and Flinders Uni as three providers now with explicit policies, with Flinders labelling the submission of work “generated by an algorithm, computer generator or other artificial intelligence” as a form of “contract cheating”.

But that comparison raises other issues.

In August, TEQSA blocked some 40 websites associated with the more traditional form of contract cheating – the sale of pre-written essays to students. The 450,000 visits those sites received each month suggests a massive potential market for AI writing, as those who once paid humans to write for them turn instead to digital alternatives.

Research by Dr Guy Curtis from the University of Western Australia found respondents from a non-English speaking background three times more likely to buy essays than those with English as a first language. That figure no doubt reflects the pressures heaped on the nearly 500,000 international students taking courses at Australian institutions, who may struggle with insecure work, living costs, social isolation and the inherent difficulty of assessment in a foreign language.

But one could also note the broader relationship between the expansion of contract cheating and the transformation of higher education into a lucrative export industry. If a university degree becomes merely a product to be bought and sold, the decision by a failing student to call upon an external contractor (whether human or algorithmic) might seem like simply a rational market choice.

It’s another illustration of how AI poses uncomfortable questions about the very nature of education.

Ben Goertzel imagined his “robot university student test” as a demonstration of “artificial general intelligence”: a digital replication of the human intellect. But that’s not what NLP involves. On the contrary, as Luciano Floridi and Massimo Chiriatti say , with AI, “we are increasingly decoupling the ability to solve a problem effectively … from any need to be intelligent to do so”.

Bob Dylan

The new AIs train on massive data sets, scouring vast quantities of information so they can extrapolate plausible responses to textual and other prompts. Emily M Bender and her colleagues describe a language model as a “stochastic parrot”, something that “haphazardly [stitches] together sequences of linguistic forms it has observed in its vast training data, according to probabilistic information about how they combine, but without any reference to meaning”.

So if it’s possible to pass assessment tasks without understand their meaning, what, precisely, do the tasks assess?

In his 2011 book For the University: Democracy and the Future of the Institution , the University of Warwick’s Thomas Docherty suggests that corporatised education replaces open-ended and destabilising “knowledge” with “the efficient and controlled management of information”, with assessment requiring students to demonstrate solely that they have gained access to the database of “knowledge” … and that they have then manipulated or “managed” that knowledge in its organisation of cut-and-pasted parts into a new whole.

The potential proficiency of “stochastic parrots” at tertiary assessment throws a new light on Docherty’s argument, confirming that such tasks do not, in fact, measure knowledge (which AIs innately lack) so much as the transfer of information (at which AIs excel).

To put the argument another way, AI raises issues for the education sector that extend beyond whatever immediate measures might be taken to govern student use of such systems. One could, for instance, imagine the technology facilitating a “boring dystopia” , further degrading those aspects of the university already most eroded by corporate imperatives. Higher education has, after all, invested heavily in AI systems for grading , so that, in theory, algorithms might mark the output of other algorithms, in an infinite process in which nothing whatsoever ever gets learned.

But maybe, just maybe, the challenge of AI might encourage something else. Perhaps it might foster a conversation about what education is and, most importantly, what we want it to be. AI might spur us to recognise genuine knowledge, so that, as the university of the future embraces technology, it appreciates anew what makes us human.

Helping Students Use AI Creatively Without the Temptation of Cheating

Designing school-friendly chatbots with firm guardrails can spur students toward creative AI use that doesn’t do their work for them.

Illustration of digital hand and human hand working on laptop together

When ChatGPT was introduced to the public in late 2022, it sparked a significant divide in the education community. On one side, teachers recognized the potential of this tool as a means of personalizing and democratizing learning. On the other, some educators expressed concerns that it would become an ultimate cheating tool, leading to a decline in authentic and creative thought.

In the last year, I have worked hard to take a less dichotomous view of artificial intelligence (AI) in the classroom and have looked for ways that AI might support and foster personalized learning and help educators rethink AI as just a “cheating tool.” Finding that middle ground was made easier when I was introduced to customized chatbots for the classroom , designed specifically for student use. It didn’t take long to recognize that these bots have the potential to introduce a whole new dimension of assistance for students who may be stuck or struggling. After all, we know that students may resort to cheating when they don’t know how to get started or what to do next.

So how do we find this middle ground? It starts with rethinking AI—seeing it less as a threat to critical thinking and objective truth, and more for its potential as a supportive resource to help students produce better, more meaningful work.

Support System

From the outside, interacting with a custom chatbot looks a lot like having a conversation with ChatGPT or any chat-based AI tool, but with some important differences. Teachers who create them using tools like SchoolAI and Mizou can build in firm guardrails to safely support each student, while keeping them focused. Both tools offer students access to customized AI assistants without jeopardizing their data. What sets them even further apart from other chatbots lies in the teacher’s ability to see students’ detailed interactions.

Teachers can precisely control what the student can or cannot do while using them, making it easier to keep students focused on a specific task. It’s important to note that bots do not replace teachers, but instead offer additional assistance to students in a timely manner, helping them get started or progress effectively on their own. At any given time during the writing and brainstorming process, some students might be using AI while others are working independently.

Goodbye, Blank Page

To see how this works, let’s head into a busy middle school language arts classroom where a diverse group of learners are tasked with writing a persuasive essay. The teacher wants to let the students have “voice and choice” in picking their subject and getting started, but as we know, each student needs a different support to help get them on the right track initially. Before the lesson today, the teacher and I set up a chatbot as a student assistant to help personalize the learning experience for each student.

When we sat down to create this chatbot, the teacher explained that one of her biggest frustrations was not being able to devote as much time to helping every student as she’d like. Invariably, during independent writing time, part of the class was often left staring at a blank page, getting little accomplished, while they waited for her to check in with them directly. To help solve this age-old problem, we created a customized bot using SchoolAI to help students start the writing process on their own. We opened up the AI assistant, called Sidekick, and input our guardrails, prompting it to help students pick a topic, get started with research, and uncover some of the angles of their persuasive essay.

essay writing ai bots

Afterward, I point out that she can use the information provided in the teacher dashboard to better understand where each student is in the process, even seeing their conversations with the chatbot itself. This way she can deliver a more tailored experience as more of a writing coach, to each student as needed.

As I look around, the students begin quickly interacting with the chatbot, and the engagement is palpable. We hear comments like “Oh, this is so cool” and “Where has this been all my life?” and “This is helping me so much!” Another student approaches me to say, “Thank you for this. I always needed this help but didn’t want to ask.”

The teacher, who was slightly skeptical at first, is now bouncing around the classroom from student to student, and I can see in her eyes that she has become a convert to using AI in the classroom. The students are diligently working with the help of the chatbot, and each is moving through the task of choosing an idea that they are passionate about, diving deeper into possible topic nuances, while others are getting advice on research, and still others are digging into possible counterarguments.

Teacher dashboard in SchoolAI showing what students are working on.

On the teacher dashboard, we begin to get a summary of what is happening with the student interactions and their individual progress.

At no time during this process will the chatbot write the essay for them, as it was initially created with specific guardrails to make sure this doesn’t happen. This experience was crafted to provide just the right amount of personalized support, so that students can stay on task and not fall behind. Think of this experience as the chatbot being there to get a student unstuck. And while it was helpful for all students, it proved especially valuable for those with dyslexia and English language learners.

Over in another classroom, students in kindergarten are using a customized chatbot to come up with sentences for sight words, and after hearing many different examples, they pick their favorite to share with their partner. In this scenario, the student eventually writes this favorite sentence, full of new and interesting words, into their notebook.

Both of these classrooms of students will grow up knowing that chatbots can help them in more powerful ways than simply cheating or writing an essay for them. They will inherently understand how it is you communicate with AI to get lots of different information, to seek additional help, and to move past not knowing what to do next. These students aren’t left to the Wild West of AI at home with virtually no guidance. This is a huge win for education.

A More Productive Future

We know students need support not only to develop their autonomy and agency in learning but also to achieve specific learning goals. Sadly, students who struggle to grasp concepts at the exact time they are presented in class or fail to get started on time often fall behind, which leaves them frustrated and with learning gaps as the class moves on without them. When this happens, learning gaps begin to accumulate over time and can lead to learning difficulties that shouldn’t exist. This could be massively impacted with just a little targeted and timely assistance.

While still in the beginning stages, these tools offer a glimpse into a future where teachers and AI collaborate to unlock each student’s full potential. The more we work with these tools and the more powerful they get, the more helpful they will be for learners.

Ai and text dominance: navigating the future of human conversations.

Different Generations Conversing

Communication is evolving due to two factors: AI's ability to engage in human-like conversations and the increasing dominance of text over voice. Does this pose a challenge for the future?

To explore these two factors, I interviewed Sherry Turkle , a TED speaker , author, and MIT professor, and Yoav Shoham , also a TED speaker , author, and Professor Emeritus at Stanford University. Turkle's research focuses on the psychology of people’s relationships with technology, while Shoham is renowned as a world leading computer scientist and co-founder of AI21 Labs whose LLM competes with GPT by focusing on avoiding errors and clear communication.

Human Like Conversations

In the largest Turing test to date conducted by Shoham’s AI21 Labs, 68% of participants correctly identified whether they were conversing with a human or a bot. Intriguingly, the French proved to be the most adept at making this distinction.

But is it crucial to know if we're speaking to a bot? Related to this is whether the conversation itself or the response holds more importance.

Talking to a Bot

For those accustomed to in-person interactions, managing conversations without non-verbal cues is challenging. Seeing someone allows us to construct a narrative about them—accurate or not—which, for better or worse, shapes our perceptions.

Making it clear whether one is interacting with a bot enables certain assumptions. For example, an interlocutor like ChatGPT may come across as polite, knowledgeable, overly agreeable, and somewhat lacking in synthesizing diverse ideas.

The giant ‘grey ghost’ lizard went extinct 100 years ago–or did it, amazon prime video s best new show arrives with a perfect 100 critic score.

Turkle voiced concerns that relying on chatbots could lead to a decline in meaningful human interactions, noting “When you're talking to an AI, you're essentially talking to nobody. It's not a person.”

The Journey or the Destination?

Whether you mind speaking to a bot or a human largely depends on the context. Many have grown accustomed to bots providing straightforward, factual responses. Yet, the broader acceptance of AI and bots might hinge on whether you lean more towards emotional or logical reasoning—a reflection of whether you value the journey or the destination more.

For Turkle, the essence of human connection is significant because, "You will have more of a sense of whether you can trust me."

Shoham counters, “There are circumstances where a machine is a better interlocutor than a person. If I have two doctors and one is more reliable and available - I wouldn’t care in the least if it was a machine or a person.”

Assessing 'reliability' in this context is crucial—evaluating a human involves emotional intuition, whereas judging an AI bot requires a more logical approach. These are different skills.

The Dominance of Chat

Turning to the second topic, in an excellent essay by Rebecca Roache , a philosopher at Royal Holloway, University of London, mentions that “Anxiety about the dystopian effects of new technology on friendship is as old as the written word. Older, in fact, for Socrates, the written word was itself part of the problem. Well over 2,000 years ago, Socrates supposedly expressed scepticism about letter-writing as a route to wisdom, favouring face-to-face interaction with peers.”

Turkle suggests that younger generations may be losing their ability to engage in meaningful arguments due to a lack of in-depth conversations. However, Shoham offers a contrasting viewpoint, “To develop intellectual ideas requires more long form and patience, which perhaps younger generations have less of - but this doesn't speak to human conversations”

He goes on to discuss Gen Z’s impatience with the long form, “I used to think that this was reflective of shallow thinking and shallower communication. I am not sure of that anymore, I think it is a different way to convey information. To the next generation, chats denote much more than they do to us. I'm a little cautious in interpreting this as that we have lost the ability to communicate nuance and deep ideas to each other.”

The brains of Generation Z are likely wired differently from those of previous generations. While some research investigates how synaptic connections in the brain may vary based on factors such as a digital upbringing, it is premature to fully understand how the brains of those in Generation Z process communication and handle non-verbal cues. As Shoham points out, “There is no question that the younger generation is growing up and communicating in different ways than we did. It's always been the case and will always be the case.”

Furthermore, as Shoham indicates, the new ways of communicating may be a lot more efficient, “I have young kids, and when they are impatient with me as they have already got the idea, they ask why am I wasting so many words on it.”

Future Communications

As a computer scientist, Shoham may be more accustomed to conversing with AI than the average person. However, this doesn't diminish his need for human connection, “Emotional connection, for example, the tender look and the warm embrace, is so built into us that it won’t be replaced in the near term [several dozens of years].”

Looking further ahead, Shoham predicts that within the next 50 to 100 years, computers and phones will become obsolete as advancements in technology enable communication via thoughts. He suggests that visionaries like Musk or others will unlock this capability, “Machines will be running through our bloodstream. The distinction between humans and computers won’t be as crisp as it is today.”

Research shows Turnitin's AI detector shows no statistically significant bias against English Language Learners

  • In response to feedback from customers and papers claiming that AI writing detection tools are biased against writers whose first language is not English, Turnitin expanded its false positive evaluation to include writing samples of English Language Learners (ELL) and tested another nearly 2,000 writing samples of ELL writers.
  • What Turnitin found was that in documents meeting the 300 word count requirement, ELL writers received a 0.014 false positive rate and native English writers received a 0.013.
  • This means that there is no statistically significant bias against non-native English speakers.

Turnitin’s AI writing detector identified as the most accurate out of 16 detectors tested

  • Two of the 16 detectors, Turnitin and Copyleaks, correctly identified the AI- or human-generated status of all 126 documents, with no incorrect or uncertain responses.
  • Three AI text detectors – Turnitin, Originality, and Copyleaks, – have very high accuracy with all three sets of documents examined for this study: GPT-3.5 papers, GPT-4 papers, and human-generated papers.
  • Of the top three detectors identified in this investigation, Turnitin achieved very high accuracy in all five previous evaluations. Copyleaks, included in four earlier analyses, performed well in three of them.

How to use Meta’s new AI chatbot that you can’t avoid

Facebook, instagram, messenger and whatsapp are all pushing a new ai chatbot.

essay writing ai bots

With seemingly fewer friends posting to their main Facebook and Instagram feeds, Meta has introduced a new feature its users can talk to: an AI chatbot.

The feature, named Meta AI, is rolling out to the company’s main apps including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. It’s primarily a conversational chat window where you can ask questions and generate AI images, similar to other AI chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Co-Pilot and Google’s Gemini.

Despite over a year of artificial intelligence being everywhere, this could be many people’s first interaction with the technology. Meta has billions of users across its apps, and anyone who has managed to avoid the bots so far will find this one nearly impossible to escape.

Should you trust that AI?

Why is this ai chatbot here.

Facebook and Instagram users probably weren’t banging down Mark Zuckerberg’s door demanding an AI chatbot, so why is this feature suddenly everywhere? The technology is still new and its utility debatable. However, the major tech companies have decided that, like voice assistants and scrollable vertical videos before it, AI is the next big thing. Now they are competing to push out their versions. Facebook and Instagram used to rely on users’ friends, family and communities to keep their attention. Now, as these platforms are aging, the companies may hope a chatty bot can replace some of the human interaction.

How do I find it?

The chatbot is integrated in search and messaging features across Meta’s apps, and may appear in your feed under some posts as well. If you don’t see the AI features it yet, check back later. Its presence is marked with its logo: a thin ring that’s mostly blue and occasionally animated. The AI tool can also be accessed online on the stand-alone website meta.ai . It is not included in the company’s app for children, Messenger Kids.

On Facebook, tap the search icon on top and you’ll find that the usual search bar has been replaced with one that says, “Ask Meta AI anything.” As you start typing, it will auto-suggest searches. Anything with the blue circle next to it is going to bring up the AI chat window. You can also tap the messages icon and engage with Meta AI as if it’s another pal to talk to. If you see it under a post in your feed, it will suggest questions to ask related to the content you see.

In Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp, you’ll also find Meta AI has taken over the search bars and appears as another chat. If your accounts are connected to each other, the Meta AI conversation should pick up where you left off, regardless of what app you’re in.

How do I turn it off?

There’s no way to get rid of Meta AI in search, confirmed Meta. In WhatsApp, there is an option to hide the new Meta AI button by going to Settings → Chats → Show Meta AI Button. However, it’s still in the search bar. Other apps have an option to mute its replies. I asked the AI chatbot how to turn it off and got multiple incorrect answers with instructions that did not work and for settings that don’t exist.

You can delete a chat with Meta AI to remove it from recent conversations in the same way you would any other chat. Swipe left on the chat and select Delete in Instagram, More → Delete on Facebook and Messenger, and More → Delete Chat on WhatsApp.

How do I get started?

Start typing full sentences or random words in any of the apps’ search bars or in the conversations with Meta AI. If this is your first time using an AI chatbot, you can begin by asking simple questions and even for a list of ways to use it.

I did the first things any normal person does when testing an AI tool. I asked it to be my pretend boyfriend, told it to generate images of ducks writing breakup letters and tried to push its boundaries. I discovered it avoids partaking in overtly sexual conversations or generating photos of the Pope (entirely unrelated questions). As with all artificial intelligence, there are creative ways to get around its filters.

Meta AI includes options for shortcuts. Type a forward slash and command, like /joke:, /imagine: or /story: and type your description after. However, these aren’t really necessary since you can make the same requests in a conversational way, such as “tell me a story about depressed hamster who ran for mayor.”

What should I use it for?

An AI chatbot is like having an enthusiastic but unreliable friend. You can ask it almost anything — but never assume it’s telling the truth. With that in mind, use Meta AI for fun and for noncritical tasks. Ask random questions like you would with Google, start conversations to feel less alone and use it to brainstorm.

Meta AI can also generate images, though in our tests they have the typical flaws associated with artificial intelligence. Most share the hyper-realistic lighting that AI images are known for, fumble details like fingers and eyes, and frequently give women exposed, ample cleavage.

There are plenty of other things you can try. Ask Meta AI to animate images, request a summary of the day’s news or ask it to take on the personality of a specific character when speaking to you. Because it’s integrated with Meta’s other products, you can use it to search things like “Reels of people learning to roller skate.”

To get the best results and avoid bland responses, ask follow-up questions and give as many details as possible. For a list of starter ideas, check out Tech Friend Shira Ovide’s recommendations of useful things to ask a chatbot .

What should I not use it for?

Don’t use AI as an authority for anything of consequence. For example, don’t rely on a chatbot for medical advice or as a source for school or work. Ethically, you shouldn’t use it to write papers for school, though Meta AI is happy to spit out wooden essays on demand.

Experts warn there is a danger of misinformation from tools like Meta’s chatbot. To steer clear, avoid using it as a go-to for anything sensitive or political. Turn to human sources instead like reporters, experts, even Wikipedia and Reddit, before artificial intelligence. For more advice on avoiding misinformation, check out our guide.

How is it different from other AI bots?

For the basics, Meta AI appears to spit out the same generic answers as its competitors. I asked five different chatbots about the best taqueria in San Francisco, a vegetarian meal plan, if God exists and how to know if a polycule is right for you. For the most part, they all gave incredibly similar, mundane but neutral answers with the exception of Microsoft’s Co-pilot, which does not enjoy shenanigans.

Is it keeping my information?

Use the same precautions typing questions and thoughts into an AI chatbot as you would a Google search. Meta does save the conversations but to protect privacy, the data is anonymized, meaning it’s not connected to your name or identity. While this is standard for technology companies, experts say it’s possible to re-identify people using additional data points. If you want to delete a chat, you can use the shortcut “/reset-ai” and Meta claims it will remove the conversation from its servers.

Meta’s A.I. Assistant Is Fun to Use, but It Can’t Be Trusted

Despite Mark Zuckerberg’s hope for the chatbot to be the smartest, it struggles with facts, numbers and web search.

In an illustration, a robotic hand points to a blank speech bubble.

By Brian X. Chen

Brian X. Chen is The Times’s lead consumer technology writer and the author of Tech Fix , a column about the social implications of the tech we use.

In the last few days, you may have noticed something new inside Meta’s apps, including Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp: an artificially intelligent chatbot .

Within those apps, you can chat with Meta AI and type in questions and requests like “What’s the weather this week in New York?” or “Write a poem about two dogs living in San Francisco.” The assistant will come up with responses immediately, such as “The corgi was short, with a butt so wide, the lab was tall, with a tongue that would glide.” You can also instruct Meta AI to produce pictures — like an illustration of a family watching fireworks.

This is Meta’s response to OpenAI’s ChatGPT , the chatbot that upended the tech industry in 2022, and similar bots including Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s Bing AI. The Meta bot’s image generator also competes with A.I. imaging tools like Adobe’s Firefly, Midjourney and DALL-E .

Unlike other chatbots and image generators, Meta’s A.I. assistant is a free tool baked into apps that billions of people use every day, making it the most aggressive push yet from a big tech company to bring this flavor of artificial intelligence — known as generative A.I. — to the mainstream.

“We believe Meta AI is now the most intelligent AI assistant that you can freely use,” Mark Zuckerberg, the company’s chief executive, wrote on Instagram on Thursday.

The new bot invites you to “ask Meta AI anything” — but my advice, after testing it for six days, is to approach it with caution. It makes lots of mistakes when you treat it as a search engine. For now, you can have some fun: Its image generator can be a clever way to express yourself when chatting with friends.

A Meta spokeswoman said that because the technology was new, it might not always return accurate responses, similar to other A.I. systems. There is currently no way to turn off Meta AI inside the apps.

Here’s what doesn’t work well — and what does — in Meta’s AI.

It’s not a search engine

Meta announced its chatbot as a replacement for web search. By typing queries for Meta AI into the search bar at the top of Messenger or Instagram, a group of friends planning a trip could look up flights while chatting, the company said.

I’ll be blunt: Don’t do this. Meta AI fails spectacularly at basic search queries like looking up recipes, airfares and weekend activities.

In response to my request to look up flights from New York to Colorado, the chatbot listed instructions on how to take public transportation from the Denver airport to downtown. And when I asked for flights from Oakland, Calif., to Puerto Vallarta in Mexico, the bot listed flights departing from Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

When I asked Meta AI to look up a recipe for baking Japanese milk bread, the bot produced a generic bread recipe that skipped the most important step: tangzhong, the technique that involves cooking flour and milk into a paste.

The A.I. also made up other basic information. When I asked it for suggestions for a romantic weekend in Oakland, its list included a fictional business. And when I asked it to tell me about myself — Brian Chen the journalist — it said I worked at The New York Times but incorrectly mentioned a tech blog I’ve never written for, The Verge.

Bing AI and Gemini, which are hooked directly into the Microsoft and Google search engines, did better at these types of search tasks, but clicking on a link through an old-fashioned web search is still more efficient.

Don’t ask it to count

A.I. chatbots work by looking for patterns in how words are used together, similar to the predictive text systems on our phones that suggest words to complete a sentence. All of them have struggled with numbers.

Unsurprisingly, Meta’s assistant stinks at counting. When you ask it for a five-syllable word starting with the letter w, it will respond with “wonderfully,” which has four syllables. When you ask it for a four-syllable word starting with w, it will offer “wonderful,” which has three syllables. Gemini and ChatGPT also fail at these tests.

Focus on words

Like other chatbots, Meta’s performed better the more information you gave it.

It excelled at editing existing paragraphs. For example, when I fed Meta AI paragraphs that felt verbose and asked for the paragraph to be tightened, the chatbot trimmed all the unnecessary words. When I asked it to improve a sentence written in passive voice, the bot rewrote it in active voice and added more context. When I asked it to remove jargon from a paragraph written by a tech blog, it rewrote highly technical terms in plain language.

It’s a fine study guide

Because Meta AI is better when it works with existing text, it can be helpful for studying. For instance, if you’re taking a history class and studying World War II, you can paste a website with information about the war into the search bar and then ask the bot to quiz you. The chatbot will read the information on the website and generate a multiple-choice test.

You can use it for fun emojis

The most compelling aspect of Meta AI is its ability to generate images by typing “/imagine” followed by a description of the desired image. For instance, “/imagine a photograph of a cat sleeping on a window sill” will produce a convincing image in a few seconds:

Meta’s A.I. is much faster than other image generators like Midjourney, which can take more than a minute. The results can be very weird — images of people occasionally lacked limbs or looked cross-eyed.

Ethics experts have raised concerns about the implications of generating fake images because they can contribute to the spread of misinformation online. But in the context of using A.I. while chatting with friends and family in WhatsApp and Messenger, Meta AI is a positive example of how generating fake images can be fun — and safe — if we treat it as a new form of emoji.

In a group conversation with my in-laws, I mentioned I was shopping for a robust baby stroller that could withstand the crooked roads of my neighborhood. In seconds, my wife used Meta AI to generate an image of a stroller with enormous wheels that made it resemble a monster truck, stamped with a helpful label that said, “Imagined with AI.”
