T-Mobile launches new Go5G unlimited plans — what you need to know

Go5G makes it easy to upgrade your phone every two years

T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert introudces Go5G plans

T-Mobile is expanding its lineup of unlimited data plans, with an eye toward tweaking its phone carrier rivals while also giving customers the chance to upgrade their phone every two years.

Announced today (April 20), the Go5G and Go5G Plus offerings cost $5 more than T-Mobile's current Magenta and Magenta Max unlimited plans. The biggest difference is that latest plans offer what T-Mobile is calling "upgrade flexibility," building in the ability to get a new phone after two years.

"The promise that we're making customers is that they can get the very best device deals every two years," said Jon Freier, president of T-Mobile's consumer division.

T-Mobile says it's responding to three-year agreements offered by AT&T and Verizon , its biggest rivals when it comes to the best phone carriers competition. Not only does that lock people into using the same device for three years, the carrier says it leaves them subject to rate hikes.

The new Go5G plans weren't the only T-Mobile announcements at the company's latest Uncarrier event today. T-Mobile also unveiled new incentives for leaving behind your current carrier, while also introducing a way to simplify returning to your old wireless provider if you end up not caring for T-Mobile's service. In addition, the company is dropping the price of its lower-cost Essentials unlimited plan as part of a limited-time promotion.

Here's a closer look at all the T-Mobile announcements from today's Uncarrier event and how the new offers compare to some of the best unlimited data plans out there.

T-Mobile's new Go5G and Go5G Plus plans

The Go5G and Go5G Plus monthly plans start at $75 and $90, respectively, for a single line of data. That's $5 more each month than the existing Magenta and Magenta Max options, which had been among the best T-Mobile plans .

A second line of data for Go5G costs $55 while additional lines cost $25 each. That means a family of four would pay $180 each month compared to $160 for four lines under the Magenta plan. Similarly, four lines of Go5G Plus costs $220 per month, which is $20 more than what Magenta Max customers would pay.

Go5G accounts receive 15GB of high-speed hotspot data while Go5G Plus subscribers get 50GB. That's 10GB more than what comes with either Magenta plan.

The extra money gives you the ability to upgrade your phone every two years under the Go5G plans. The plans are also subject to Price Lock, which is T-Mobile's guarantee that it won't raise rates if you keep your plan.

The Go5G plans enjoy the same benefits as Magenta and Magenta Max customers, including picking up the coast of a Netflix subscription for accounts with two or more lines. The Go5G plans also enjoy the same travel perks as their Magenta counterparts, and Go5G Plus customers get the same complimentary Apple TV Plus subscription that Magenta Max subscribers receive.

One of the noteworthy changes involves hotspot data, as Go5G customers get more of it. Specifically, Go5G accounts receive 15GB of high-speed hotspot data while Go5G Plus subscribers get 50GB. That's 10GB more than what comes with either Magenta plan.

The Go5G plans also get 5GB more high-speed data for use when traveling in Canada and Mexico — 10GB for Go5G customers and 15GB if you get Go5G Plus.

If you do switch to T-Mobile and find the new service wanting, a new Go Back Guarantee takes some of the complications out of switching back.

The cost of a single line Go5G Plus is comparable to what Verizon charges for its $90 Get More plan as well as AT&T's $85 Unlimited Premium Plan. Both of those plans offer extensive perks. Verizon's Get More includes the Disney Plus bundle with ESPN Plus and Hulu while also letting you accrue Travel Passes that cover using your cell phone plan overseas. AT&T's top unlimited plan lets you use your data in 19 Latin American countries. Neither of those plans includes the ability to easily upgrade phones, though, and T-Mobile also bakes the cost of taxes and fees into its rates.

To mark the launch of the Go5G plans, T-Mobile is letting Go5G Plus customers get a free 5G phone with an eligible trade-in. Phones released in the last six years are eligible for a trade-in value, with T-Mobile offering up to $800 to cover the cost of the new phone.

T-Mobile's Go5G plans go live on April 23.

T-Mobile's Easy Unlock and Go Back Guarantee

T-Mobile already offers to pay off early termination fees when you switch to its phone service from your current carrier, covering up to $650 of your costs. That's not changing under T-Mobile's Easy Unlock program, but now you'll be able to trade in your existing phone for a new device. The offer is good for up to two lines, T-Mobile's Freier said.

Easy Unlock is a limited time promotion.

If you do switch to T-Mobile and find the new service wanting, a new Go Back Guarantee takes some of the complications out of switching back. Drop T-Mobile as your carrier within 30 days of switching, and the carrier will give you $50 back for each line of data to pay off your bill — essentially waiving the cost of your first month of service should you decide to switch back.

T-Mobile Essentials pricing

T-Mobile Essentials, the carrier's least expensive unlimited data plan, is getting a temporary discount to mark all of T-Mobile's other promotions. Normally $60 a month for one line, Essentials will now cost $50.

The discounts also extend to multiple lines of T-Mobile Essentials, where a family of four would now pay $100 per month instead of the usual $120. Those prices are covered by Price Lock as well.

T-Mobile's New Go5G Plans Explained: DON'T Waste Your Money

Stetson Doggett profile picture

On April 20th, 2023, T-Mobile announced three new cell phone plans: Essentials Savings, Go5G, and Go5G Plus.

If you're an existing T-Mobile customer or thinking about signing up as a new customer, you may have some quesitons:

  • Are T-Mobile’s new Go5G plans worth your hard-earned money?
  • Should you upgrade to these plans if you’re an existing customer?
  • How do T-Mobile's new plans compare to the plans from Verizon and AT&T?

I don’t want you wasting your money, so in this article we’re answering these questions.

We’re covering exactly what’s new with T-Mobile Essentials Savings, Go5G, and Go5G Plus and whether or not you should upgrade or switch to these new plans.

T-Mobile’s Confusing Plan Lineup

To start things off, it’s important to understand T-Mobile’s plan lineup.

Consumers now have six different unlimited plans to choose from when they go to sign up for T-Mobile service:

  • Essentials Savings
  • Magenta MAX

If choosing between six different unlimited plans sounds confusing, don’t worry.

I’m going to un-complicate things for you and tell you exactly which unlimited plan to get.

To simplify the lineup, think of it this way – all of T-Mobile’s plans fit into one of three categories:

  • Entry-level plans
  • Mid-tier plans
  • Top-tier plans

The entry-level plans are the most affordable options with the fewest features. The mid-tier plans have a balance of features and price. And the top-tier plans are the most expensive options, but they also include all the bells and whistles.

Entry-Level Plan Comparison: Essentials vs. Essentials Savings

Essentials and Esssentials Savings are the two entry-level plans from T-Mobile.

They are the most affordable plan options, starting at $60 and $50 per month respectively for a single line.

Essentials is $60 per month. It includes unlimited deprioritized data, 600kbps hotspot data, 480p video streaming, free international texting, and 128Kbps data in Canada and Mexico. International calling is available as a $15 per month add-on, and international data roaming is available for a $5 per month add-on.

T-Mobile Essentials Plan Features

The new Essentials Savings plan is exactly the same and makes 1 key change: it drops the price.

Essentials Savings drops the price per account by $10 for one line, $10 for two lines, $0 for three lines, $5 for four lines, and $10 for five lines.

T-Mobile Essentials Savings Plan Features

Here’s the full pricing breakdown:

Essentials pricing

  • 1 line: $60
  • 2 lines: $90 ($45 per line)
  • 3 lines: $90 ($30 per line)
  • 4 lines: $105 ($26.25 per line)
  • 5 lines: $120 ($24 per line)

Essentials Savings pricing

  • 1 line: $50
  • 2 lines: $80 ($40 per line)
  • 4 lines: $100 ($25 per line)
  • 5 lines: $110 ($22 per line)

Essentials vs Essentials Savings Total Price Per Account

Is Essentials Savings Worth it for new or existing customers?

Essentials Savings is not worth it for new or existing customers.

If you’re a single-line user, you can get more features at a better price from Metro by T-Mobile. Metro’s $50 unlimited plan includes truly unlimited data, 8GB of high-speed hotspot data (compared to no hotspot data on the Essentials plans), and it’s even a bit cheaper thanks to the fact it includes all taxes and fees.

Single-line users could also save heaps of money by getting a low-cost prepaid plan.

Mint Mobile’s 15GB plan is just $20 per month, saving you $300+ per year, and Mint Mobile's unlimited plan is just $30 per month, saving you $200+ per year.

Families will also save money by going with a different option.

T-Mobile’s Go5G Plus plan ends up being cheaper than Essentials for 3, 4, and 5 lines when you factor in its generous $800 off trade-in deals.

And if you don’t want to finance your devices, then Metro by T-Mobile is the better option.

You can get four lines of unlimited data for just $25 per line on Metro. Because all taxes and fees are included on Metro, your family would end up saving roughly $200+ per year.

Mid-Tier Plans: Magenta vs. Go5G

Magenta and Go5G are the two mid-tier plans offered by T-Mobile.

On the surface, they appear to offer a good balance between price and features.

But the truth is they end up becoming surprisingly expensive when you factor in the cost of purchasing a new device. But before we dive into price, let’s talk about what each of these plans includes.

T-Mobile Magenta is $70 per month.

It includes all taxes and fees.

It comes with 100GB of premium data, 5GB of high-speed hotspot data, 480p video streaming, free international texting, 5GB of high-speed data in Canada and Mexico before unlimited data at 256Kbps, 5GB of international data, and 4 full-flight streaming sessions per year. International calling is also available for a $15 per month add-on.

Additionally, T-Mobile Magenta comes with a few perks.

It includes 1 year of AAA, 6 months of Apple TV+, and a free Netflix Basic subscription when you have two or more lines on your account.

T-Mobile Magenta Plan Features

So what’s new with Go5G?

T-Mobile Go5G makes four key changes. It increases the price to $75 per month. It triples the hotspot data to 15GB. It increases the video streaming quality to 1080p (5Mbps). And it doubles the Canada and Mexico data to 5GB.

T-Mobile Go5G Plan Features

Are those new changes worth the price hike?

For most people, probably not.

Especially since prices are higher across the board for the new Go5G plan.

Magenta pricing (legacy pricing, includes 3rd line free)

  • 1 line: $70
  • 2 lines: $120 ($60 per line)
  • 3 lines: $120 ($40 per line)
  • 4 lines: $140 ($35 per line)
  • 5 lines: $160 ($32 per line)

Go5G pricing (current pricing, includes 3rd line free)

  • 1 line: $75
  • 2 lines: $130 ($65 per line)
  • 3 lines: $130 ($43 per line)
  • 4 lines: $155 ($39 per line)
  • 5 lines: $180 ($36 per line)

Magenta pricing (current pricing, 3rd line free removed)

  • 3 lines: $140 ($47 per line)
  • 4 lines: $160 ($40 per line)

Are Magenta or Go5G worth it for new or existing customers?

Not at all.

While having 100GB of premium data, 5GB or 15GB of high-speed hotspot data, and free data roaming in Canada, Mexico, and 11 European countries are nice perks over the entry-level Essentials plans, the truth is neither Magenta nor Go5G are worth it for most consumers.

The main reason is that Magenta and Go5G include around half of the device trade-in credit as the new Go5G Plus plan.

When Go5G and Go5G Plus launched on April 23, 2023, Go5G customers could only get $350 off a new iPhone 14. Meanwhile, Go5G Plus customers could get up to $830 off an iPhone 14. You would end up paying $500 extra per device you finance on Magenta and Go5G.

That extra cost makes the plans more expensive than the Go5G Plus plan for two lines, three lines, four lines, and five lines.

So families with two or more lines would end up saving money (and getting a better plan) by going with T-Mobile Go5G Plus.

And single-line users, or anyone looking to save extra money, could get a better deal from a prepaid carrier.

Mint Mobile’s unlimited plan would save single-line users around $350 per year.

For more options, you can compare all unlimited plans here .

Top-Tier Plans: Magenta MAX vs. Go5G Plus

Magenta MAX and Go5G Plus are T-Mobile’s top-tier plans.

They include the best of the best of what T-Mobile offers.

Magenta MAX is $85 per month. It includes unlimited premium data, 40G of hotspot data, 4K video streaming, free international texting, 5GB of high-speed data in Canada and Mexico, 5GB of high-speed international data in over 215 supported destinations, and full-flight streaming where available. International calling is available for a $15 add-on.

The Magenta MAX plan also includes perks like Netflix Basic with one line, Netflix Standard with two or more lines, one year of AAA, Apple TV+, and $20 off T-Mobile Home Internet.

t mobile go5g business plan

The new Go5G Plus plan makes three key changes.

It increases the hotspot data by 10GB, bringing the new total to 50GB. It triples the Canada and Mexico data to 15GB. And, yes, it increases the price by $5 to $90 per month.

T-Mobile Go5G Plus Plan Features

There is also one more key change.

Go5G Plus is the first plan T-Mobile has offered that guarantees existing customers will always get the same promos as new customers.

T-Mobile calls this “ New In Two ” because it means you will always be able to trade in your old device for a new one every two years. This effectively saves you around $800 every two years.

For example, today you could trade in an iPhone 7 and get a free iPhone 14 on Go5G Plus.

Then, in 2025, you could trade in your iPhone 14 and get a free iPhone 16.

And in 2027, you could trade in your iPhone 16 for a free iPhone 18.

Sure, it’s possible Apple will raise prices on their entry-model iPhones. But no matter the price, you’d still be saving $830 every two years on Go5G Plus. And that’s a really good deal.

Here’s how prices compare between Magenta MAX and Go5G Plus:

Magenta MAX pricing (legacy pricing, includes 3rd line free)

  • 1 line: $85
  • 2 lines: $140 ($70 per line)
  • 4 lines: $170 ($43 per line)
  • 5 lines: $200 ($40 per line)

Go5G Plus pricing (current pricing, includes 3rd line free)

  • 1 line: $90
  • 2 lines: $150 ($75 per line)
  • 3 lines: $150 ($50 per line)
  • 4 lines: $185 ($46 per line)
  • 5 lines: $220 ($44 per line)

Magenta MAX pricing (current pricing, 3rd line free removed)

  • 3 lines: $170 ($57 per line)
  • 4 lines: $200 ($50 per line)
  • 5 lines: $230 ($46 per line)

Current pricing of all T-Mobile plans

Is Magenta MAX worth it for new or existing customers?

If you’re an existing customer on Magenta MAX, odds are you’re probably getting a pretty good deal on cell service.

Maybe you’ve taken advantage of one of T-Mobile’s many free line promotions, or you were able to get a 20% off insider discount.

Odds are you’ll be really happy sticking with your current Magenta MAX plan.

That said, there are three reasons you may want to consider upgrading to Go5G Plus:

  • You need more hotspot data
  • You need more data in Canada or Mexico
  • You want the best device deals

The device deals point is probably the most important factor here.

You see, T-Mobile always reserves its best $830 off trade-in deals for its most expensive plan, which is now Go5G Plus.

This means Magenta MAX customers have been relegated to getting the $350 to $400 of trade-in credit you get on the mid-tier plans. When Magenta MAX customers go to upgrade their devices this fall to the new iPhone 15, they’ll be getting roughly half the trade-in credit as Go5G Plus customers and spending around $500 extra.

Meanwhile, Go5G Plus customers would be able to get a free iPhone 15 with trade-in.

The extra savings you get from the device deals on the Go5G Plus plan offset its slightly higher price tag.

I mean, it’s not crazy to spend $60 extra per year to save $830 off your phone every two years, right?

Is Go5G Plus worth it for new or existing customers?

In my opinion, Go5G Plus is the only plan T-Mobile offers that’s actually worth it.

Why is this?

One simple reason: you get a FREE new phone every two years with a trade-in.

When T-Mobile launched Go5G Plus, they announced it was the first plan where existing customers were guaranteed to get the same device promos as new customers. And T-Mobile is promising existing customers on Go5G Plus will be able to get a free new phone every two years with what they call “New In Two.”

You could trade in an iPhone 7 today and get a free iPhone 14 on Go5G Plus.

Then in two years, you could trade in your iPhone 14 and get a free iPhone 16.

And two years later, in 2027, you could trade in your iPhone 16 for a free iPhone 18.

Getting a free phone on Go5G Plus saves you $830 every two years. And it’s the savings on the smartphones that really make this plan a good value.

You see, when you add everything up––the monthly cost of the plan, the trade-in credit you get for your old device, the monthly payments on your new device, and taxes and fees–– G5G Plus ends up being the cheapest plan for consumers with three lines, four lines, and five lines.

Comparison chart of T-Mobile plan prices for three lines

And for two lines, Go5G Plus is just $2 extra per line compared to T-Mobile Essentials.

Comparison of T-Mobile plan prices for two lines

Considering Go5G Plus includes many extra perks and benefits over T-Mobile Essentials, like the ability to save $240 per year on T-Mobile Home Internet, I think it’s easily a better overall value.

The only situation where Go5G Plus isn’t worth it is for single-line users.

Individuals can still save heaps of money by getting a cell phone plan from a prepaid carrier.

Comparison of T-Mobile plan prices for single lines

But otherwise, I think you’re losing money if you go with any other plan that’s not Go5G Plus.

T-Mobile vs. Verizon vs. AT&T

We’ve covered how T-Mobile’s plans compare to each other.

But how do T-Mobile’s new plans compare to the options from Verizon and AT&T?

This may surprise you.

Single Line Comparison

For single-line users, Go5G Plus is in the middle of the pack, while Go5G is more expensive. AT&T’s plans offer the best overall value.

And a big reason for this is all three of AT&T’s unlimited plans, even their entry-level Unlimited Starter plan, are eligible for the $800 off device promos.

Keep your eye on AT&T Unlimited Starter throughout the comparison.

T-Mobile vs Verizon vs AT&T single-line total cost comparison

2 Line Comparison

For two lines, T-Mobile Essentials and Go5G Plus actually bump up and become more affordable. Meanwhile the regular Go5G Plan is even closer towards the bottom.

The most affordable plans continue to be from AT&T.

T-Mobile vs Verizon vs AT&T two line total cost comparison

3 Line Comparison

For three lines, all of T-Mobile’s plans suddenly become super affordable. This is thanks ot their third-line free promotion.

Now Go5G Plus is second in the list, and it’s just around $0.50 more than AT&T Unlimited Starter. Considering how Go5G Plus is a top-tier plan, it’s a really good value here.

T-Mobile vs Verizon vs AT&T three line total cost comparison

4 Line Comparison

For four lines, AT&T reclaims it’s position in the top two spots, but T-Mobile Go5G Plus is still a great value.

Shockingly, Go5G and Essentials plummet to the middle of the Verizon plans, which are much more expensive.

T-Mobile vs Verizon vs AT&T four line total cost comparison

5 Line Comparison

And for five lines, it’s the same story. Go5G Plus is a great option, but it just can’t beat AT&T’s value.

It’s worth mentioning that I am doing my best job to estimate taxes & fees for AT&T, but they could be off by a couple of dollars, and in your area taxes and fees could be way higher.

This could make the price difference between AT&T and T-Mobile Go5G Plus much less.

T-Mobile vs Verizon vs AT&T five line total cost comparison

I’m disappointed T-Mobile raised prices for consumers, especially considering they called out AT&T and Verizon for raising prices during their announcement.

But for me, the truth is that Go5G Plus doesn’t seem that unreasonable when you factor in the device deals and the perks it includes.

T-Mobile Introduces Go5G Plus: An Unlimited Plan With Device Upgrade Perks

  • Cell Phones

If you upgrade your phone every couple of years, T-Mobile’s new Go5G Plus plan may be worth considering. Along with unlimited premium data and 50GB of high-speed mobile hotspot, Go5G Plus comes with a variety of streaming perks and T-Mobile’s unique “New in Two” upgrade perk.

I’ve checked out the details of T-Mobile’s Go5G Plus plan as well as its other new plans, perks and switching benefits.

T-Mobile’s New Go5G Plus Plan: Get a New Device Every Two Years

T-Mobile has just unveiled three new plans : Essentials Savings, Go5G and Go5G Plus. These new unlimited postpaid plans are joining T-Mobile’s original lineup including Essentials, Magenta and Magenta Max.

The biggest news is centered around what’s now T-Mobile’s most expensive plan: Go5G Plus. The plan costs $90 for one line (with autopay) and offers unlimited premium data. With multiline discounts and the third line free, you can get three lines for $150 per month total. This ends up being $20 cheaper than Magenta Max.

Go5G Plus includes 50GB of high-speed mobile hotspot data before unlimited 3G speeds, and you’ll also find all of T-Mobile’s streaming perks with the new plan. However, what makes Go5G Plus so special is the “New in Two” perk .

Customers with the Go5G Plus plan will have access to the same device deals as new customers in addition to 24-month payment plans.

Most device deals at AT&T and Verizon require customers to activate a new line or upgrade to a new plan. However, with T-Mobile’s new Go5G Plus plan, you’ll always have access to the same device deals advertised to new customers without having to add a new line or switch to a new plan.

Additionally, while AT&T and Verizon often lock customers into 36-month payment plans for new devices, T-Mobile is offering 24-month payment plans. This shorter payment plan enables customers with the Go5G Plus plan to upgrade every two years.

Below, you can see a more detailed comparison published by T-Mobile comparing Go5G Plus with Verizon’s Get More Unlimited plan and AT&T’s Unlimited Premium plan:

A comparison of T-Mobile Go5G Plus alongside Verizon Get More Unlimited and AT&T Unlimited Premium

Other New Plans from T-Mobile: Go5G & Essentials Savings

In addition to Go5G Plus, T-Mobile has added two other new phone plans: Go5G and Essentials Savings.

t mobile go5g business plan

Go5G is a cheaper alternative to the new Go5G Plus plan. It falls between T-Mobile’s Magenta and Magenta Max plans in both price and perks. Go5G costs $75 for one line and includes 100GB of premium data plus 15GB of high-speed mobile hotspot. It does include a few streaming perks, but it doesn’t include the “New in Two” upgrade perk that makes Go5G Plus stand out.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, T-Mobile has also unveiled its new cheapest plan available: Essentials Savings. It has all of the perks of T-Mobile Essentials (including 50GB of premium data) for a slightly cheaper price on a single line, two lines, four lines or five lines.

In the table below, you can see all six of T-Mobile’s unlimited postpaid plans and how they compare:

For a more detailed comparison of T-Mobile’s unlimited postpaid plans , visit the carrier’s website.

The Easy Unlock and Go Back Guarantee

Whether you’re thinking about trying out one of the new plans or you’ve just been shopping for a new cell phone service provider in general, T-Mobile is making it easier to switch now than ever before.

On top of three new monthly cell phone plans, T-Mobile is now offering The Easy Unlock and Go Back Guarantee perks for new potential customers.

In T-Mobile’s recent announcement , the company singled out AT&T for keeping customers’ phones locked to the AT&T network even once it’s paid off. In an effort to help customers “make their great escape,” T-Mobile is allowing customers to trade in an eligible locked device and get a new smartphone.

Finally, T-Mobile is also offering a Go Back Guarantee. If you switch to T-Mobile and decide that you aren’t happy with your service within the first 30 days, the company will give you $50 back per voice line to help cover the cost of your bill.

T-Mobile has been on top of the competition when it comes to 5G service and now could be a great time to try it out yourself. Plus, you don’t have to opt for the newest, most expensive plan available. However, if you frequently upgrade your phone, the deals that you’ll get with Go5G Plus may be worth it.

If you are thinking about switching to T-Mobile, be sure to avoid this mistake people often make when switching carriers . For more options, check out our guide on the best cell phone plans and deals available now .

In April of 2023 T-Mobile introduced two new plans, dubbed Go5G and Go5G Plus. These plans weren’t dramatically different from the existing Magenta and Magenta Max offerings. The biggest changes were adding more hotspot data and access to killer deals previously reserved for new customers only. T-Mobile isn’t done yet, as it recently announced a third plan called Go5G Next. This new plan goes into affect today.

This new plan is almost literally identical to Go5G Plus, but it has a secret weapon that helps it stand out: yearly upgrades. In this guide, we take a look at T-Mobile Go5G Next vs Magenta and the other pre-existing T-Mobile plans. Is this finally a plan worth switching to for Magenta subscribers?

T-Mobile Go5G Next vs Go 5G Plus: Are there any differences besides yearly upgrades?

As you can see, Go5G Next has almost nothing different to offer from Go5G Plus. The only exception is the ability to upgrade your phone once a year. Premium data, hotspot data, and all other perks remain identical. Regardless of the number of lines, you’ll always pay around $10 more per line than you would for Go5G Plus. Another big change is the move away from special free phone perks and other bonuses for most T-Mobile plans, except high-tier options like Next.

How Go5G Next yearly upgrades work

T-Mobile Go5G Next allows you to upgrade your phone in as little as six months; the only catch is you have to pay for half of it first. Unlike AT&T and Verizon , T-Mobile phone terms only stretch for 24 months, meaning most folks can upgrade within 12 months of purchasing a device.

Still, there might be reasons why you’d want to upgrade earlier, like if a newer model adds some killer features you’ve always wanted. The good news is you can make additional payments if you want to get to that half-mark faster than twelve months.

Once you’ve paid at least half of your phone and have been an owner for at least six months, you can trade in your existing device and apply it toward purchasing a new one. There are no limits on what devices are eligible, and so this promotion can be used on any iPhone or Android phone.

Is the yearly upgrade perk worth the additional costs?

go5g next (1)

But if you DO like having the latest phone every 6-12 months? You’ll pay $120 more for the Next plan, but you’ll essentially be forgiven half of your phone’s payment. That said, you’ll also have to trade it in and have a new payment on your hands. So really, it depends on how much your phone cost in the first place and how much you’d get if you paid it off and sold it directly through something like eBay or Swappa.

For this thought experiment, let’s say you bought the 128GB iPhone 14 last year for $799. You’ve had it for a year now and, in that time, have paid for about half of it, leaving you with $399.50 left to pay off.

You have two options:

  • Trade-in with T-Mobile and your Next plan, they’ll pay off the remaining balance, and then you’ll get a new phone with a new payment.
  • Pay off your iPhone’s remaining $399.50 and sell it on eBay or Swappa yourself. Based on my research, you’ll get around $100 after you factor in what you still owe to T-Mobile. You can then use that $100 toward a new phone.

In a way, option 2 is cheaper. After all, you’re basically getting the same deal, but you’ll get $100 toward the new phone and skip paying the $120 premium the Next plan charges over the Plus plan. Of course, the second option ignores possible promotions and discounts that might only apply if you went through the Next plan, but I’d argue you’re still likely going to end up in the same spot at worst as far as an investment.

Again, we’d advise really thinking about the new phone you’re getting and how much trade-in credit you’d get versus selling it yourself. Devices like iPhones retain value for longer, while many Android phones see resale values fall fast. In other words, it might be worth it for some phones but not for others.

Of course, you can’t compete with the convenience of T-Mobile 5G Go Next. Not everyone wants to jump through hoops to just barely make a savings. Ultimately, Go5G Next is a good plan for those who like to switch phones often, but we’d recommend doing your homework before jumping.

Do you have to upgrade from Magenta to a Go5G plan?

T Mobile logo at MWC 2022

Absolutely not! T-Mobile still offers its Magenta plans even to new subscribers, though it’s pretty clear the company’s main focus is Go5G. While it’s certainly possible the Magenta tier could be phased out in the future, the good news is that it wouldn’t matter if you’re already a subscriber.

T-Mobile will grandfather in old plans and phase them out slowly over time, so even if Magenta goes away, you have no absolute need to switch.

Okay, but should you upgrade from Magenta to a Go5G plan, including this new next offering? For now, we don’t think there is any reason to upgrade to Magenta. The plans are so similar you should only consider an upgrade unless you are really attracted to Go5G’s larger hotspot data pool, its special deals, or the ability to trade in a phone yearly.

Is the new T-Mobile Go5G Next plan worth the upgrade?

T-Mobile raises forecast for subscriber additions on demand for its discounted plans

(Reuters) – T-Mobile US on Thursday raised its annual forecast for monthly bill-paying phone subscriber growth, as more customers tap into its discounted plans and on expansion of 5G network coverage.

Although the overall market for postpaid phone additions is shrinking, T-Mobile is viewed as the top pick by analysts as it gains shares from underpenetrated smaller markets segments like rural and business.

The company now expects to add 5.2 million to 5.6 million subscribers in the full-year 2024 compared to its previous forecast of 5 million to 5.5 million subscriber additions.

The U.S. telecom carrier has seen a positive reception of its unlimited and bundled Go5G plans which have attracted customers.

“Even as the rest of wireless saw moderated customer growth, our momentum continued thanks to our increasingly differentiated combination of the best value, best network, and best experiences that customers love,” CEO Mike Sievert said.

The company added 532,000 monthly bill-paying phone subscribers in the first quarter, the highest among peers, compared with FactSet estimates of 477,500 additions.

In a highly competitive and saturated market, T-Mobile’s discounted plans have resonated well with cost-conscious customers who are looking for flexible offerings.

Total revenue for the three months to March stood at $19.59 billion, slightly below analysts’ estimates of $19.81 billion, according to LSEG data.

T-mobile unveils go5g next, a new plan that guarantees the freedom to upgrade every year.

The Un-carrier takes Phone Freedom to the next level, with a new premium plan that comes with built-in upgrade flexibility and over $270 in added value for 2+ lines every single month

BELLEVUE, Wash., August 21, 2023 --( BUSINESS WIRE )--The Un-carrier is one-upping the upgrade. T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) today announced Go5G Next, the only plan in wireless that guarantees customers are upgrade-ready every year and that new and existing customers always get the same great phone deals. The latest plan from T-Mobile—also available for businesses with Go5G Business Next—means that new and existing customers always have access to the latest technology to light up America’s leading 5G network .

This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20230820900454/en/

How T-Mobile’s new premium plan, Go5G Next, compares to premium plans from AT&T and Verizon (Graphic: Business Wire)

Earlier this year, T-Mobile’s Un-carrier move Phone Freedom helped people break free from "contract creep," where Carriers quietly extended device contracts, locking in customers for three whole years in order to get their best deals. The Carriers did this despite the fact that nearly 70% of people surveyed prefer to upgrade their phones every two years. So T-Mobile introduced Go5G Plus, the first wireless plan to guarantee customers are upgrade-ready every two years AND that existing customers will always get the same great device deals as new customers. Go5G Plus saw immediate success, quickly becoming T-Mobile’s most popular plan.

But of course, the Un-carrier couldn’t stop there. Because for almost 10% of people surveyed, upgrading to the latest smartphone every 12 months is a major priority. And while that number may seem small, it’s not! That accounts for over 33 million people, based on the U.S. population.

Enter Go5G Next—the only plan in wireless where customers are upgrade-ready every year with the promise existing customers will always get the same deals as new customers. And this isn’t a limited-time thing. New and existing customers get the same great deals now … and always in the future ... and are upgrade-ready every year. Go5G Next launches alongside all of T-Mobile’s existing value-packed plans, including Go5G and Go5G Plus, Essentials and more.

"While the Carriers try to lock you in and limit your choices, T-Mobile continues to double down on value and deliver even more options, so everyone has a plan that works for them," said Mike Sievert, CEO, T-Mobile. "At T-Mobile, we’re focused on giving customers the best network, best value and best experience—and that means upgrading on your terms. Go5G Next brings more flexibility and freedom to wireless and another end to longer-than-you-want device contracts."

Go5G Next comes with all the great features of Go5G Plus, along with the ability to upgrade devices yearly. Here’s how it works:

Switch to Go5G Next.

Score the latest 5G phone on T-Mobile’s no-interest phone payment plan (EIP) with any eligible offer. Right now, that’s a free 5G smartphone for both new and existing customers with eligible trade-in via 24 monthly bill credits plus tax.

Once you’ve paid off half your phone, you’re eligible to upgrade! In most cases, customers are upgrade-ready every single year or sooner.

Simply trade in your old phone (T-Mobile pays off your remaining EIP!) and upgrade to the latest phone on a new EIP.

With Go5G Next, customers only have to pay off half of their phone to be upgrade-ready—and because T-Mobile’s financing plans are only 24 months, this is typically done in just 12 months. For those who want to upgrade sooner, Go5G Next customers can do it in as soon as 6 months as long as they’ve paid off half their phone. T-Mobile covers the rest.

Say a customer picks up a $1000 smartphone. Once they pay off half ($500), that customer can trade it in toward a new one, and T-Mobile covers the remaining $500 on the old phone. And new and existing customers on Go5G Next always get the same great deals whenever they’re ready to upgrade.

Premium Plan with Major Benefits

Go5G Next doesn’t just guarantee that customers have the freedom to upgrade every year and get access to the nation’s most awarded 5G network . It also includes extra perks like Netflix on Us , free in-flight Wi-Fi, free high-speed data in 215+ destinations , Scam Shield protection and more . That’s over $270 in added value every single month for those with two or more lines. And those perks are all built into the plan and all included on top of their wireless service—just for being a T-Mobile customer. Seriously. No Carrier can say that.

Right now, compared to premium plans from AT&T and Verizon, Go5G Next customers with three lines will pay the same price or less — and be upgrade-ready in a year instead of waiting three years with AT&T and Verizon to get their best deals. And Go5G Next customers will always get the same device deals as new customers when they’re ready to upgrade.

See how Go5G Next stacks up against the others in the accompanying graphic.

T-Mobile’s mission is to be the best in the world at connecting customers to their world—and that means giving people ALL the options. Because the Un-carrier is for everyone. Go5G Next enhances T-Mobile’s current plan portfolio so customers have an even greater range of choices—and Go5G Next extends across 55+, military and T-Mobile for Business plans to fit everyone’s needs. Check out everything that comes with the Un-carrier’s value-packed plans, from Essentials to Go5G Next in the accompanying graphic.

And Go5G Business Next is packed with value for small business customers, too. On top of the ability to upgrade devices every year, Go5G Business Next includes all the same benefits of Go5G Next, plus 100GB of mobile hotspot data, premium business travel benefits valued at over $400 and business solutions like Secure Wi-Fi and Microsoft 365 on Us —making it easier for businesses to work from virtually anywhere while saving money.

Go5G Next plans will be available this Thursday, August 24. And for a limited time, new and existing customers can get a discounted third line and pay just $60/line monthly with AutoPay. Plus, it’s never been easier to switch to the Un-carrier. T-Mobile helps people break free from the Carriers by helping pay off their phones or contract termination fees when making the move.

Golden line: See what cell providers offer senior discounts

t mobile go5g business plan

As inflation ticks up , there are one group of people who may have a coupon printed right on their drivers license: seniors.

Some, such as Farm Forum financial columnist Rick Kahler, argue that more people should take advantage of the discounts offered to those of a certain age.

"No one forces businesses to offer senior discounts," Kahler, the president and owner of Kahler Financial of Rapid City, wrote. "Companies do so because it’s ultimately good for them if you do business with them instead of their competitors."

As cell phones become increasingly integral for communication, the more experienced at life can take advantage of plans marketed towards those over 55.

Here are the senior discounts and plans offered by mobile carriers.

AT&T offers the Unlimited 55+ for people 55 or older and who have a billing address in Florida. The plan costs $60 per month for one line or $80 per month for two lines. Each line receives unlimited data, phone calls and text messages.

The plan must be purchased at an AT&T location in Florida.

Seniors in other states can take advantage of an up to $10 per month discount through AARP on the cell phone provider's Unlimited Premium plan.

T-Mobile offers three 55+ lines for seniors:

  • Essentials Choice 55: $45 per month for one line
  • Go5G Plus 55: $70 per month for one line
  • Go5G Next 55: $80 per month for one line

Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless does not offer a senior discount or plan.

Mint Mobile

Mint Mobile offers a cell phone plan for seniors 55 and older called Mint 55+. The plan costs $15.99 per month and includes assistance with cancelling a contract with a previous carrier.

Consumer Cellular

AARP members can save 5% on monthly service and 30% on some accessories at Consumer Cellular.
