Doctoral Degree studies at the Department of Electrical Engineering

Other than starting a career in industry, appropriately qualified master graduates may study for a doctoral degree (PhD, in German "Dr.-Ing.") in the department of electrical engineering.

Please note, that the responsibility for research matters and thus for PhD-positions is entirely with the professors of our institutes.

The homepages of all institutes of the department of electrical engineering are listed here . Please ask the secretary offices of the institutes of your choice for current vacancies of PhD-positions. Additionally, please read very carefully the  information about doctoral degree studies given by our University's Admissions Office. Furthermore it is possible to get support from the University's Office of the GRADUS Graduate Academy .

At the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning it is possible to gain a doctoral degree in engineering (Dr.-Ing.).

Architects and urban planners tend to be a rare commodity because – unlike many other academic disciplines – proof of an academic qualification in the form of a doctoral degree is not a prerequisite for a successful career in architecture or urban planning. There are thus comparatively few doctoral researchers at our Faculty. However, interest in doctoral degree studies has grown over the past few years.

In scarcely any other subject is the spectrum of dissertation topics as broad as in architecture and urban planning. Likewise, the diversity across the Faculty's institutes is reflected in the broad spectrum of research topics and methodology of our research. There are dissertations in engineering which experimentally address issues related to building physics and structural design; dissertations on history of art and architecture which study historic buildings, architectural styles, construction techniques or master builders or matters of monument protection; and dissertations investigating architectural and planning theory , architectural sociology, building economics, building, urban and landscape ecology, design and planning methods, building studies and urban and landscape planning .

The doctoral procedure is set out in the current  Doctoral degree regulations   of the University of Stuttgart. Doctoral studies at our Faculty are also open to applicants with a university degree in a subject other than architecture and urban planning provided their chosen topic is relevant and supervised by a member of the Faculty's teaching staff. Past doctoral researchers have included civil engineers, geographers, art historians and biologists.

Non-German applicants must prove beforehand that the university degree from their home country is regarded as equivalent to that of a German university.

If you wish to enroll as a doctoral researcher, you should discuss your chosen topic with a member of the Faculty teaching staff who specializes in a field relevant to your planned area of research. You will finalize the topic of your doctoral study with your prospective supervisor and submit an application for acceptance to the Faculty as a doctoral researcher . Decisions on matters related to doctoral studies are taken by the  doctoral committee .

So far the Faculty has only admitted individual doctoral researchers and has not yet set up a research training group or graduate schools. Some institutes organize regular Doktorandenkolloquien at which doctoral researchers can present, report and discuss the progress of their work. In 2004 the Faculty introduced cross-institute discussion forums specifically for doctoral researchers whose dissertation topics are related to urban development and urban planning ( Doktorandenkolloquium Stadt ).

The participating institutes are the  Institute of Urban Planning and Design , the  Institute for Housing and Design , the   Institute of Architectural History  and the  Institute of Spatial and Regional Planning  (Faculty 2).

Doctoral degree

Here you find information for PhD students

The University of Stuttgart has new doctoral degree regulations (starting april 1st 2019).

The doctoral committee of the faculty of chemistry has decided that the achievement of the doctoral degree within the department has to follow this way.

1. Admission request

You have to submit your application for admission via GRADUS at the beginning of the work on your PhD thesis.

Catalogue of potential credit points accepted by the Faculty of Chemistry to fulfil the required ECTS in individual doctoral studies. You can gain the degree within an individual doctoral study oder within a structured doctoral study .

2. Proposal of an examination committee

To enable the candidate to obtain in depth knowledge in the examination subjects, he or she is supposed to hand in an application with a suggestion of the examination committee [de] , an exposé about the dissertation (approx. 1 page), a shortlist of your publications and a CV. This application has to be handed in at the dean´s office to Mrs. Monika Carey at least half a year before the expected date of the oral exam and has to be signed by the supervising professor. The application can only be discussed, if you have been admitted as a Ph. D. student in a former meeting of the doctoral committee. The doctoral committee can accept or reject the proposal and appoint other examiners. If you graduate within the Doctoral Degree Regulations of the University Stuttgart from 2019, the dissertation can be prepared publication-based in a cumulative form, if this is permitted by the directive of the doctoral committee in agreement with the faculty council and the supervisor approves the preparation of a publication-based dissertation.

3. Finishing the thesis - final decision of the examination committee and date of the exam

After the finishing the dissertation (don't forget the declaration of authorship) the candidate registers at the dean´s office with one hardback of his dissertation, with the declaration of authorship as a separate letter. If you are doing a cumulative doctorate, you habe to submit the thesis electronically eight days before the meeting of the doctoral committee. Furthermore your supervisor needs to confirm that all requests within the doctoral agreement have been completed. The doctoral committee decides on the members of the examination committee in his next meeting. Only in well reasoned cases a deviation from the preliminary composition is possible. The candidate gives a copy of his work to each of the members of the examination committee. The main examiner and the co examiners write a report and send the original of the report to the dean´s office. If both reports are available in the deans office , the candidate arranges an appointment with the examination committee for the oral examination and he/she books a lecture room. It is necessary to send the information on the exam date and the room to the dean´s office at least 16 days before the arranged date of the examination.

The candidate arranges a date for the oral examination with the designated examination board and reserves the lecture hall/seminar room. A little tip: It is easier to reserve a room if you take the lecture slots into account. If an examination starts at 13:15 h, it is easier to find a room than trying to find a room from 13:00 h. The examination can take place at the earliest 16 days after notification of this date to the Dean's Office. Reason: The thesis and assessment must be available in the Dean's Office for 14 days. Please remember to inform the Dean's Office of the place and date of the examination. The oral examination takes place immediately after the presentation (after exclusion of the public), usually in the room in which the presentation took place. The doctoral documents are returned to the Dean's Office after the examination.

The oral Ph. D. exam starts with a presentation (20 -30 minutes), in which the candidate explains the concepts of her or his dissertation as well as the essential results. The presentation is open to members of the university. In the oral examination, which is lasting between one and two hours and is not open to the public, the candidate has to prove that she or he has in depth knowledge in the area of her or his dissertation. This is supposed to happen in an exam conversation with the main examiner, the co-examiner and an additional examiner in another subject, which is usually related to the subject of the dissertation. The dean can appoint the examiner in the additional subject or another professor of the department to be the head of the examination committee. The oral examination takes place directly after the presentation (after the public has been excluded) in the same room in which the presentation took place. The doctoral documents are handed back to the dean´s office after the examination.

5. Rules for the Dissertation

The dissertation work has to comprise a summary in foreign or german language with a normal size of 2 - 5 pages, but 10 pages as a maximum. For details see the german pages. (Decisions of the promotion committee on 22/05/1996, 11/06/1996, 21/01/1998, and 16/4/2008).

Intelligent systems for a sustainable society

The University of Stuttgart is one of the leading technically oriented universities in Germany with global significance. Located centrally in an economically strong region with vast cultural integration, the university sees itself as a hub of university-based, extramural and industrial research. Furthermore, it takes a role as a leader in research-based teaching, focused on quality and holism. The university is dedicated to researching and strengthening the interfaces between technology, society and culture in an interdisciplinary manner, defined as the "Stuttgart Way". This means the integration of engineering, natural sciences, humanities and social sciences based on the fundamentals of cutting-edge research at a disciplinary level.

Excellent research and teaching

The University of Stuttgart implements innovative concepts in research and teaching in order to provide knowledge and strategies for a meaningful and sustainable development. It focuses on basic research that is both knowledge-oriented and application-related. To facilitate this research, the university is actively part of regional, national and international research networks.

The university is committed to the principle of unity between research and teaching. Students acquire knowledge, expertise and the power of judgement, in accordance with the guidelines of scientific research and awareness. The university fosters fascination for the sciences, supporting its students and junior researchers at all stages of their careers. It promotes independent thinking and provides an environment for responsible action. In doing so, it educates individuals into exceptional experts who think in an integrative and global manner and act responsibly in the sciences, economics and society.

A powerful region

Founded in 1829, at the beginning of the Industrial Age, the University of Stuttgart continues to prepare the way for innovation within an economically and scientifically powerful region and contributes to the economic success and prosperity of our society. This process combines the requirements of a social and cultural change, which allows an early and extensive input of social interests in research and design as well as teaching and further education.

Open-mindedness

The University of Stuttgart stands for open-mindedness, individuality and community spirit. It brings together students that are eager to learn, highly motivated employees, outstanding teachers, and excellent researchers as well as visionary thinkers and inventors. By means of its culture of integration, the university creates and conveys knowledge for shaping the future of our society.

University location

The University of Stuttgart is nestled in one of Europe’s most vibrant industrial regions. This fosters many forms of interdisciplinary collaboration – for instance, in numerous Collaborative Research Centres (also known as CRC or sometimes CRC/TRR) and in application-oriented research assignments. The University of Stuttgart sets up a close relationship and a successful transfer of knowledge and technology between its research institutions and business enterprises in the region and beyond. This very practical orientation benefits research and teaching. At the same time, economic players profit from rapid access to new scientific knowledge and contact to experts in their specialised fields. There are numerous possibilities of collaboration for businesses. Furthermore, the university also maintains a close relationship with non-university research institutions such as the Max Planck Society, the Fraunhofer Society, the German Aerospace Center and the German Literature Archive Marbach. Thus, the optimal prerequisites for cutting-edge research at the highest level are all to be found in Stuttgart.

Stuttgart Dissertations

All information on the publication process of your dissertation as part of your doctoral degree studies.

(Icon: info)

Submission of the mandatory copies and the corresponding documents HERE

The publication of the dissertation is part of the doctoral degree studies. A prescribed number of mandatory copies has to be submitted to the University Library within one year after the oral examination (within two years for the humanities). The submission of the mandatory copies of the dissertation and their form are specified in the current Doctoral Degree Regulations of the University of Stuttgart.

Doctoral students who were accepted or admitted to doctoral degree studies before the new version of the Doctoral Degree Regulations (April 1, 2019) came into effect can still complete their doctoral degree studies according to the Doctoral Degree Regulations 2016 (DE) . However, please take note that interim regulations must be complied with (cf. sec. 21 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations 2019 ).

Publication Types

The number of mandatory copies to be submitted (see sec. 13, par. 2 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations 2019) and which further documents we require from you depends on the type of publication. Even if the doctoral degree studies are completed in accordance with older Doctoral Degree Regulations, doctoral students are free to publish the dissertation according to the terms of sec. 13 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations 2019.

Electronic Publication on the Publication Server of the University of Stuttgart (OPUS)

You publish the dissertation via the University Library, freely accessible online. Further information on Publishing with OPUS Further information on the procedure for Dissertations

We need from you:

  • the electronic version For this purpose, please log in to OPUS and upload the file(s) including the description of your work via an online form.
  • 6 printed copies
  • the licensing terms (DE) filled out and signed by you

Please note the guidelines for the outer form below.

Publication in a Publishing House

A commercial publisher handles the production and distribution via bookstores.

  • 6 copies of the publisher’s edition
  • the publisher’s evidence of a print run of at least 150 copies or confirmation that the title will be available for at least four years in case of Print on Demand

Self-printing

You commission a printer or a print shop with the printing of your dissertation.

  • 34 printed copies

Publication as Volume of an Institution Series

If your dissertation is released within a series published by an institution of the University of Stuttgart, the number of mandatory copies to be submitted and which further documents we need from you depend on the publication type of the series.

  • If the series is published electronically, the regulations for the electronic publication apply.
  • If the series is released in a publishing house, the regulations for publisher releases apply.
  • If the series is published by the institute itself, the regulations for self-printing apply.

Publication as Special Print

You publish your dissertation in a journal. In the journal the work has to be marked as dissertation in a footnote. The journal title, the year (or volume), and the page number have to be absolutely clear from the copies to be submitted.

  • 6 copies of the special print

Guidelines for the Outer Form of the Publication

The outer form of the respective publication type is regulated in the „ Leaflet for Doctoral Students Regarding the Outer Form of the Dissertations " (appendix to the Doctoral Degree Regulations, only available in German).

Please pay attention to the following:

titelblattmuster

  • At least the mandatory copies to be submitted must contain a German and a usually English abstract
  • In case of being published in a publishing house, the entire edition has to be marked as dissertation by imprinting the code number "D 93" (stands for "Dissertation of the University of Stuttgart"). "D 93" can only be omitted if the entire edition contains the indication in plain writing that it is a dissertation or if the dissertation title page is the only title page.
  • The dissertation must be printed on both sides.
  • The binding type must not be a spiral binding, but a durable binding, e.g. adhesive binding.
  • Due to the long-term archiving, recycling paper must not be used. If possible, the dissertation should be printed on acid-free paper.
  • Standard format of the printed copies is DIN A5. In special cases, e.g. works with larger drawings and tables, other formats may be used, preferably DIN A4. However, this must be approved by the doctoral committee depending on the faculty or institution.

Please inquire further specifications from the office of the dean responsible for you. In cases of doubt, only the responsible doctoral committee is authorized to make decisions, not the library or the main reporter (see sec. 7, par. 1 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations).

Submission to the University Library

Both the mandatory copies and the corresponding documents have to be submitted at:

University of Stuttgart Library Team Publication Services (T3) Holzgartenstr. 16 70174 Stuttgart

The „Dissertation Office“ is located on the ground floor (room 00.098). Please make an appointment for the submission with us beforehand:

  • +49 711 685-83512

Alternatively, you can ask someone else to submit both your dissertation and the corresponding documents or send them to us via mail. In your package please include your contact details (address, telephone number, email address) and the address of your main reporter.

Further Procedure

As soon as we have received everything in correct and complete form, we send 4 copies of the dissertation to the main reporter (in accordance with sec. 13, par. 4 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations). The main reporter compares the copies to the manuscript and reports the correspondence by forwarding one copy to the respective office of the dean. Clearance is given by the dean or the chairperson of the doctoral committee. The office of the dean informs both the University Library and the examination office of the clearance. The examination office issues the certificate and we add the dissertation to the library holdings and release the electronic version, if applicable.

Completed Dissertations

An overview of dissertations completed in Stuttgart, sorted by faculty, can be found in the biannually published directory "Dissertationen und Habilitationsschriften der Universität Stuttgart" .
