Why a personal statement matters

The personal statement is an integral component of the application process. Specifically, it demonstrates your interest in sports, your sports science degree aspirations, and your suitability for the programme.

A compelling sports science personal statement will let UCAS, and your prospective uni compare your passion, understanding, and skills in the field of sport science to other applicants. It highlights your physiology knowledge, physical education coursework, or sports work experience, and could set you apart from the competition.

How to structure your personal statement

When writing a sports science or a sport and exercise science personal statement, start by outlining your interest in the sport and exercise science field.

Detail any work experiences you've had especially those related to sport, such as coaching or training.

Conclude with your career goals relating to what you want to study; this will help demonstrate that the sports courses at university you are applying for match your goals.

What to include: Key elements for a sport science or sport and exercise science personal statement

Essential elements for your sports science personal statement include:

  • your passion for sport
  • understanding of sports science
  • practical experience in the field of sports

Can I find an example of a Sport Science personal statement?

Yes you can. Here is an example of an exemplary personal statement for applying for a sport and exercise science degree, written by our admissions experts.

Sport is, and has been, the most important thing in my life since starting secondary school. As soon as I started playing basketball, my goals for life and my focus became clear to me. I went from playing from the school basketball team to playing for Brighton Cougars at county league level, onto playing at a national league level for Worthing Thunder and then at regional level for South East England at the ages of u15s and u17s.

My love for basketball, desire to get better and wish to reach my goals of playing professionally, steered me into looking at aspects of training such as strength training in the gym. I have since become passionate about using the gym as a tool to assist my basketball career; through the desire to become bigger stronger and faster, as this is an extremely sought after goal within the fitness and sport industry that all aspiring athletes want to achieve.

Not only do I simply want to achieve these goals, but I enjoy the process and want to learn about how the body and the mind work in cohesion to create a successful athlete.

Going from secondary school to college it was clear to me that sports science would be extremely enjoyable and fulfilling as a course choice. This is because I aim to use what I learn about the processes of our bodies and our minds in performing sport to aid my own career.

Since involving myself in the world of strength training I have become aware of the diversity of different approaches, and ways of training the body to achieve certain things depending on the sport. I have had first-hand experience of this as a first year student I started going to the gym, was fairly inexperienced, and I trained in certain way to build mass and strength.

However, only later did I start to realize that this was at detriment to my shooting ability on the court, and it influenced my speed negatively. This is one of the reasons that I would love to take my learning about the science of sports to another level by undertaking a relevant degree, so I can learn even more about how the body works.

Not only have I had first-hand experience of the physical side of sports, I am very conscientious when it comes to the mental side of sport. I have suffered from droughts of confidence in my basketball ability, and I understand that the mind is not constant and mentality can change over time through sport.

Another goal I aim to achieve is to understand the ‘secret’ to having ultimate mental toughness in sports to be an elite competitor. The psychological side of sports science intrigued me because I understand the importance of an athletes mind set when competing at a high level , and this is what I aim to do.

My time at college has been a great learning experience for me because I have studied lots of different aspects of sports and had new sporting experiences as the captain of the basketball first team, in a very competitive Academy basketball league.

Examples of some of my most enjoyed topics I have studied at college include biomechanics, research methods, training at altitude in hypoxia, and influences of stress on athletic performance.

One of the most challenging but rewarding tasks I carried out was a research project on a topic of my choice; I chose to focus on the link between music and physical performance. This assignment was useful from an analytical standpoint as it gave me a good understanding of how to comprise my own data with secondary research, and evaluate the outcomes of the research as a whole in order to conclude on whether there is a link between music and performance.

The experience of these assignments at college has given me the tools necessary to study further into sports using different types of testing, such as correlation analysis and testing for difference. The satisfaction gained has given me the passion to really want to learn so much more about the diverse and fascinating world that is sports and the science behind it.

Sport Science Personal Statement Example

Sample statement.

From an early age I enjoyed an active, outdoor lifestyle and have always been involved in various sports teams. Starting at the age of seven I have been a member of our local football team, moving up the age categories and helping the team become one of the best in the area.

Although football is my main interest I am also a member of other local sports teams including cricket and rugby. When I am not playing team sports I am a regular runner and swimmer, and have recently become interested in weight training and body building.

Throughout my school career I was an active player in the school football, rugby, tennis, and athletics teams, working with the other team members and our coaches to achieve many prizes and trophies.

Sport has had a major impact on my life and I understand the dedication and hard work it takes to become a top sportsman. Many of the great sportsmen and women have inspired me from childhood including David Beckham, Paula Radcliffe, and American athlete Dick Fosbury.

Outside of school I combine my sporting activities with working part-time in my local supermarket. This role has helped me to further develop my teamwork skills, as well as teaching me the value of good communication and being able to use my own initiative.

During Year 10 I completed a work experience placement at my local primary school where I gained hands-on experience of what working with young child is really like. It was this work experience, and my time spent being a voluntary coach for my local under 11’s football team, that prompted my decision to become a Physical Education teacher.

I feel that my achievements and dedication in my own preferred sports can help inspire a younger generation to be passionate about sport and encourage them to have an active lifestyle.

I hope that studying Sports Science to degree level will help me develop my skills and give me a better understanding of the human body. I then aim to complete a PGCE course and become a teacher.

As a university student, I am in the middle of my life’s journey. Each year is packed with new opportunities and challenges. This year, I have decided to explore the field of sports science.

Sports science has always been an area of interest for me because it intersects both my academic and athletic interests. In particular, I find biomechanics fascinating; understanding how our bodies move and how we can improve performance fascinates me. Furthermore, as someone who loves being active, studying sports psychology intrigues me. Learning about what motivates athletes and helping them achieve their goals is definitely something that appeals to me.

As I begin my fourth year of university, I am confident that the time has come for me to declare a major. After much deliberation, I have decided that sports science is the best fit for me. This career path will allow me to merge my two favorite things: sports and science.

Since I was young, I have been interested in both athletics and understanding how the body works. Sports science encompasses all aspects of athletic performance, from biomechanics to physiology to nutrition. By pursuing this major, I will be able to work with athletes and also help regular people stay healthy and active throughout their lives.

I believe that universities offer an excellent opportunity for students to explore different majors before deciding on what they want to do. As someone who loves change and new experiences, declaring this major was one of the easiest decisions that I have made thus far.

Personal statements allow you to put yourself out there and explain what you can do . How you write your personal statement is ultimately your decision, just as long as it relates to sports. For example, you may want to cite your baseball skills and show how they relate to science. In another instance, you may choose to highlight your strong leadership skills.

Sample Sports Science Personal Statement

Sport has been my life for the past few years. Working in some of the world’s top sporting resorts, I discovered a talent and passion for coaching, which helped to convince me that I wish to become a sports coach, working with top athletes to improve their psychology and nutrition. I already have substantial practical experience of working in a sporting environment but I recognised early on that I need a degree in Sports Science to gain the requisite in-depth scientific knowledge to fulfil my ambition.

To prepare myself for the degree, I am currently studying for distance-learning qualifications in Mathematics, Business, Sports Psychology and Nutrition at Stonebridge College while I continue to work much of the time in Spain. I am predicted good grades for all subjects and I am getting a good grounding in Sports Science from the Psychology and Nutrition courses, which I really look forward to pursuing further on the degree. Mathematics was not my favourite subject at school but I know how essential it is for science and so I have persevered and am now making excellent progress. My very busy working schedule means I have to manage my time intelligently and devise good study plans and techniques. These skills should be very useful when I come to study on the degree.

Earlier, I took a BTEC Level 3 in Sports Performance and Excellence for which I received a number of Merit grades. The knowledge and skills I developed on the course have helped me immeasurably to progress in my work so that I may assist in sports coaching at a high level. It was after the BTEC that I made the difficult to decision to move to Spain, where I could pursue my interest in sport at La Cala Gold Resort Spain, one of the most prestigious golf resorts in Europe. I managed the buggy fleet and marshalled the courses, sometimes having to deal with up to five hundred golfers. I learned quickly to speak Spanish and manage my time and work confidently and competently in a high-speed, high-pressure work environment. My ability to adapt quickly and work under pressure should stand me in good stead for moving into higher education.

My work was widely recognised and consequently I was offered a prestigious position on the academy staff at David Leadbetter’s Golf Academy, one of the most highly-regarded sports training academies in the world. Initially, I worked managing bookings and equipment sales but already I have progressed to assisting with golf lessons for young people and adults, an experience which has only confirmed me in my ambition to become a sports coach. After only a short time, I have been entrusted with great responsibility, including frequently having to manage the closing of the academy and the preparation for the next day’s lessons.

Before I left for Spain, I had already spent two years working at a leading golf course in Winchester, where I handled professional equipment sales, which taught me how to deal confidently with people and work well within a team environment. Outside of work, I play sports regularly. I have competed in many golf and tennis tournaments and I was an integral member of my college’s basketball team. I hope to join the golf and tennis clubs at university and help manage them. I am also a keen skier and I would like to organise skiing trips with fellow students when I begin my studies.

In my spare time, I also love to read about sports psychology to help prepare me for my studies. I particularly enjoyed The Inner Game of Golf by Tim Gallwey, which stresses the importance of psychological techniques that improve your concentration, will power and confidence for performance enhancement.

When I graduate I wish to work for one of the leading sports academies or teams in tennis, football or golf, where I wish to work with top athletes, so I hope to make many important contacts at university with people I could work with in future to help coach top sportsmen. The degree in Sports Science is the best way to bring me closer to my dream.

Sports science personal statement example 8.

I am a focused person who puts his all into everything I set my heart on, and with my life I have set up ways in which I will go about achieving the goals and targets I have set myself. In addition, I have made back up plans and smart targets which will help me to move on in case there’s a hump or trouble in the road/path I have set for myself.

I am someone who is trying to go into the football industry and from a young boy I’ve always had my mind set on trying to become a footballer however, growing up I was shown that there are many other things that the football industry can offer other than being a footballer, e.g. there’s being a manager; scout; director of finance; coach; dietician; club owner; accounts executive; concession manager etc.

With the subjects that I have chosen, I believe that from what I have read about each course they each aid me in trying to reach the profession I want to go into also, the course also allows me to expand my knowledge in areas in which I may not have strong knowledge in which I believe would be convenient to have when I go into my profession as having extra knowledge about things that link to your profession is always a good thing to have.

During my past I have worked in jobs which required me to be punctual, show dedication and determination into getting whatever task that is put in front of you done to a good standard and this is qualities that I try to take into everything I do. I have also taken part in activities in Duke of Edinburgh, as well as playing for academy and semi pro football teams where team work and hard work were essential skills and qualities to have.

However, the most important skill/quality that I believe I’ve learnt from these activities was never giving up, because I realised once you give up you never get to really reach your potential and you don’t get to test yourself and see where your boundaries are. I also have qualities which have been learnt from home such as being respectful and being organised; which are I see as the basic qualities one needs in life to help progress in life and be successful.

Listening to music, making music, reading and sleeping are ways in which I tend to keep myself busy when taking a break from doing work as these are my hobbies along with going for a kick a bout with friends and going to the gym. It is a way that I found out helps me to release stress and I believe this is a good way to occupy myself as it is healthy, and keeps me fit as well.

Physical Education Personal Statement

An active lifestyle has fuelled my passion for Physical Education (PE). Physical activity has played a large part in my life from dancing to competitive swimming I have always enjoyed taking part in sport and the feeling of well-being it brings.

Since starting high school it's been my ambition to become a PE Teacher. I enjoy working with people, encouraging them to participate in physical activity helping to promote a sense of confidence, well-being and achievement. To help achieve my ambition I have sought to learn as much as I can about sports coaching both academically and practically; taking a Higher in PE and taking part in activities to help to build leadership, life and technical skills. I volunteered at my local YMCA from age 13 to 16. As a Youth Worker I ran the gym for young people (aged 12 to 18) providing inductions, demonstrations and developing personal fitness plans. I've run drop-in sessions providing counselling and support helping young people with some of the issues they faced in their day-to-day lives. For my work I was awarded the Saltire Award from John Swinney MSP for 500 hours volunteering. I coach Netball for 1st to 5th Year after school as well a running the Basketball club during lunchtime, whilst this is done in my own time it is very rewarding. I am also an Active Schools Young Sport Ambassador for my school, specialising in Basketball. The Young Ambassadors programme has led to me attaining qualifications in First Aid, Disability Inclusion Training, Young Sports Leaders and Child Protection. I have been trained to handle the day to day situations I may find myself in when I am working in schools as a coach. I have experience in promoting sports and awareness as part of community charity work. I organised a netball match between pupils and teachers for the benefit of St. Andrews Hospice (one of our school charities I am an ambassador for). This was a great event promoting awareness of netball, our school team; whilst raising funds for a very worthwhile cause.

This year I have had the opportunity to take 1st and 2nd Year PE classes each week. This has allowed me to put into action the skills and experiences I have in the environment I want to work in - a high school sports department, planning and delivering lessons. I have also worked with local primary schools as an Active Schools Co-ordinator to organise sports coaching sessions for the pupils. These experiences were quite different and have provided great insight and learning experiences. They have reinforced the passion I have to work with young people. I am a school Prefect taking a lead in school activities, acting as a role model for the other pupils in the school. This role brings a lot of responsibility and allows me to provide and demonstrate leadership in a variety of situations.

Outside of school my hobbies are physical fitness and music - playing both the guitar and bagpipes. I have had the privilege of being part of the North Lanarkshire Schools Pipe Band and playing at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow and taking part in the World Pipe Band Championship (achieving a first place for our grade). I also work part-time for Greggs. Working in a fast paced retail environment over the past year has helped me to develop good organisational skills, work with others to achieve goals and develop my customer service skills (I have won several mystery shopper awards for my work).

In conclusion I am confident and hard-working individual. I have worked hard to amass the academic, technical and life skills to achieve my ambition to attend University and get the opportunity to pursue my ambition to teach PE. I believe I have both the attitude and aptitude to thrive in a vibrant university environment.
