Hi there. My name is Josh Brake . My day job is teaching engineering at Harvey Mudd College, but on the weekends I love to make pizza. As a Connecticut native who now lives on the West Coast I’m pretty far from Wooster Street and Pepe’s Pizzeria and Sally’s Apizza.

Fortunately, with a little bit of practice and my trusty Ooni oven I have learned how to get a good New Haven-style pizza in your own backyard.

Supreme used to be one of the best New York-style slice shops in town. Unfortunately, that heyday is long gone, as the slices at their University District location are barely better than what you'll find at an airport pizzeria. The crust is underbaked and gummy, the toppings are dry, and while we appreciate many a crispy cheese edge on the Detroit-style square, the rest of it is pretty forgettable—even when fresh and toasty from the oven. We can literally use all of our fingers and toes to tally up better pizza spots in Seattle.

But what this place does have going for it is the bar area, which opens at 11am every day—it's a narrow, 21+ hideaway for those who'd like to escape college students and sunlight. Go forth and brood with a beer alongside some scallion garlic knots at noon on a random Wednesday.

Bryan Kohberger court hearing canceled at last-minute as defense demands evidence in Idaho murders case

T wo hearings in the Bryan Kohberger quadruple murder trial were canceled at the last minute as the defense demanded new evidence from prosecutors.

Mr Kohberger’s attorney Anne Taylor says state prosecutors are withholding evidence the defense team should be privy to, according to several motions that have been filed.

Judge John Judge postponed the closed-door hearings until 30 May so that both parties have time to review the information submitted between 7 May and 10 May.

It’s the latest delay in the case that has hit multiple roadblocks over the past 18 months since four University of Idaho students were brutally stabbed to death in November 2022 at their off-campus home in Moscow.

Mr Kohberger, 29, a former PhD student who is accused of killing the victims with a military-style knife, appeared in the Latah County courtroom on Tuesday.

The decision came after Mr Kohberger’s defense team requested the new evidence relating to the probable cause affidavit used in his arrest, according to The Idaho Statesman.

This evidence includes cell phone tower data, a video of a vehicle seen near the 1122 King Road home and information relating to a driving test.

“The state knows full well what they have and what they’re withholding from us,” Ms Taylor said at a hearing earlier this month. “We don’t know what they’re going to show, but we know they exist.”

In the alibi motion filed last month, the defence said they planned to call Sy Ray, a former police officer to dispute some aspects of the cell phone pings included in the probable cause affidavit, the newspaper reported.

The evidentiary hearing will now take place at 10am local time on 30 May and be open to the public, however, if “issues arise that must be addressed in a sealed proceeding, the Court will clear the courtroom and discontinue the live stream of the proceedings on the Court’s YouTube channel,” according to court documents.

A second hearing scheduled for later this week has also been postponed until 30 May. It will begin behind closed doors at 130pm local time and will pertain to the investigative genetic genealogy records used by the FBI to identify Kohberger.

Last month, Mr Kohberger's lawyers shared his alibi for the night of the murders, claiming that he was out driving because he often enjoyed looking at the moon and stars.

“Mr Kohberger was out driving in the early morning hours of November 13, 2022; as he often did to hike and run and/or see the moon and stars,” Ms Taylor wrote. “He drove throughout the area south of Pullman, Washington, west of Moscow, Idaho including Wawawai Park.”

Pullman is approximately 8 miles west of Moscow, where the murders took place.

Earlier this month, Ashlin Couch, a former roommate who moved out six months before the murders spoke out for the first time, revealing the moment she realized her friends were dead and the final text she sent to them.

Ms Couch told KXLY that she moved into the doomed off-campus house on King Road in Moscow , Idaho , in 2020, with her friends Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen. She moved out in May 2022 and Xana Kernodle took over the lease.

Six months later, in the early hours of 13 November 2022, Goncalves, 21, Mogen, 21, Kernodle, 20, and Kernodle’s boyfriend Ethan Chapin, 20, were stabbed to death inside the student home.

Two other female roommates were in the home at the time but were unharmed. One of the survivors – Dylan Mortensen – came face to face with the masked killer, dressed in head-to-toe black and with bushy eyebrows, as he left the home in the aftermath of the murders, according to the criminal affidavit.

In an emotional interview, Ms Couch recalled the moment that she received an alert from the University of Idaho, alerting her to a suspected murder on King Road – the address that she had moved out of mere months earlier.

She sent a final text to Mogen, asking: “Are you okay?”

“I remember, I think, getting a second alert or I had been driving home and I texted like our group of friends, and I just had said, ‘Has anyone heard from Maddie?’ And I remember, like my last text message to her was like, ‘Are you okay?’” she said.

“And I felt it like right then and there, I kind of just knew that something was wrong.”

For months after the murders, she said she was scared to walk to her car in the dark.

Now, she works to raise awareness and educate students on social media safety.

In May 2023, Mr Kohberger declined to enter a plea in the case, prompting a judge to enter his plea as not guilty.

Idaho prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty against Mr Kohberger.

In March, the Idaho Supreme Court denied a request from Mr Kohberger for his grand jury indictment to be thrown out.

A trial date has not been set.

How Pizza Hut Helped Seal the Fate of Communism in the Soviet Union

Nothing fuels late-night office hours like ordering a pizza. Whether the office has to finish a big project, take inventory or overhaul a filing system, pizza is a crowd pleaser. A few well-placed pizzas can even help fuel a determined counter-coup from Soviet communist hardliners, if need be. It turns out that no one out-pizzas the Hut, not even the Red Army.

In September 1990, the first-ever Pizza Hut opened in Moscow, capital of the newly established independent Russia and of the Soviet Union, which became two separate levels of governance in 1990. Moscow’s Pizza Hut was made possible by Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev’s policies of perestroika (economic reform) and glasnost (openness). These policies paved the way for private enterprise in the Soviet Union -- and for Western companies to open up shop.

Muscovites flocked to Western brands like the first McDonald’s, which opened in Pushkin Square on Jan. 31, 1990. That first McDonald’s famously attracted 38,000 customers in its first days. Pizza Hut was so popular, a second location was opened that same year, which was a good thing for Russian President Boris Yeltsin and the future of Russian democracy.

While Soviet citizens might have loved American fast-food chains, not everyone was in love with Western democracy. The onetime iron curtain was corroding fast, as Gorbachev’s policies began showing the cracks in the Soviet system. Shortages for the most basic supplies were widespread, inflation was rampant and member states were breaking away from the USSR.

The Soviet Union’s old guard watched as instability and economic despair grew across the country, blaming Gorbachev, as general secretary of the Communist Party, and his policies for its multitude of woes. At the same time Pizza Hut was opening its doors in Moscow, the KGB began planning regime change. It took them nearly a year to set the stage, but when Gorbachev took a holiday to his dacha, or second home, in the Crimea, the plotters took action.

Primary conspirators included Gennadiy Yanayev, the first and only vice president of the Soviet Union, Prime Minister Valentin Pavlov, KGB Chairman Vladimir Kryuchkov, Soviet Marshal Dmitriy Yazov, Interior Minister Boris Pugo, Chairman of the Peasants Union Vasily Starodubtsev and a handful of other plotters. On Aug. 19, 1991, the coup began.

Using the KGB and the Soviet military, the coup plotters locked Gorbachev in his dacha and announced to the world that he had taken ill while Vice President Yanayev assumed power and occupied Moscow with thousands of troops. Meanwhile, Yeltsin, who had been at a meeting in Kazakhstan, changed his flight plan. Instead of being arrested upon landing, he returned home, where the plotters also failed to arrest him.

Yeltsin gathered a group of Russian officials and legislators, all supporters of the new reforms, to the White House, the Russian parliament building. For the next few days, Russian leaders inside the White House would jockey for power against the communist coup. Outside, the communists would use the military to enforce its power while making speeches and pleas to the people through state-run media.

Meanwhile, the Pizza Hut down the street was firing on all cylinders. In spite of the military presence, Russians continued to order pizzas. One customer was a standout, however. Pizza Hut delivered 300 pizzas, 20 cases of Pepsi and “ industrial quantities of coffee ” to the Russian White House during the coup. Some say they were ordered by Yeltsin himself .

"Russians always have a way around,” Andrew Rafalat, Pizza Hut's director of operations for Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, told The New York Times in 1991.

The communist plot to overthrow the new order failed after pro-communist forces killed three civilians protesting against the coup. Soviet-Afghan War veteran Dmitry Komar was killed while blocking the view of an armored personnel carrier on its way to attack Yeltsin in the White House. As the vehicle dragged Komar’s lifeless body, Vladimir Usov tried to free Komar and was killed in the effort. Ilya Krichevsky was there to stand up for democracy and was killed by a stray bullet.

Their deaths were tragic, but it kept the Soviet forces from storming the Russian parliament building and violently forcing Yeltsin to concede. Gorbachev would award all three the honor of Hero of the Soviet Union, and they are remembered today as martyrs for democracy.

In the end, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR declared the coup illegal, the co-conspirators were arrested and Gorbachev returned to Moscow, where he resigned as general secretary of the Communist Party. Gorbachev himself wouldn’t be seen in a Pizza Hut until 1998, when he starred in a Pizza Hut commercial.

Days after the coup ended, Soviet Republics began to declare independence from the USSR On Dec. 25, 1991, the Soviet Union’s Red Banner was lowered at the Kremlin for the last time, replaced by the Russian Tricolor.

Opinion | Crucial, not cruel and unusual: The Supreme Court weighs homelessness regulations

The class action lawsuit challenges the constitutionality of anti-camping ordinances in a small Oregon town, but the impact of the Justices’ ruling will be especially strong here in California. More than 123,000 Californians  don’t have shelter – nearly half of the total unsheltered population in the US.

While the challengers in Grants Pass argue that camping bans effectively criminalize homelessness, public officials contend that these ordinances are a critical tool to address public safety issues that arise from homeless encampments. About 30 California cities and counties, as well as the League of California Cities, have filed amicus briefs  supporting Grants Pass.

San Francisco and Sacramento, like Grants Pass, have been under injunctions from federal courts that prevent or delay enforcement of anti-camping laws based on the 2018 Martin v. Boise decision. That ruling asserts that arresting or citing people for sleeping on public property violates the Eighth Amendment’s cruel and unusual punishment clause if the individuals have nowhere else to go.

The Martin decision has left municipalities with few options to address encampments if shelter availability can’t be confirmed on the spot. This, of course, is a nearly impossible task for public safety officers given that the number of open shelter beds is constantly in flux. But many public officials, including San Francisco Mayor London Breed  and Governor Gavin Newsom , argue that prohibiting local governments from clearing encampments is neither a workable nor compassionate policy for addressing homelessness.

In our 2022 Hoover Institution  report on the state of homelessness in California, we highlighted that law enforcement plays a crucial role in addressing the challenges faced by the unsheltered. Finding practical solutions has only become more relevant as the number of people experiencing unsheltered homelessness continues to grow.

Encampments can be serious safety and environmental hazards, as well as hotbeds for criminal activity  like drug dealing  and violence . San Francisco firefighters responded to over 680 encampment fires  in the first 300 days of 2023 alone, and earlier this year a Los Angeles fire captain was injured by an explosion  while battling an encampment fire.

Opponents of camping bans argue that they perpetuate a cycle of interactions with the justice system, but this ignores the reality that these ordinances are key tools used by law enforcement to motivate homeless individuals to accept social services. In fact, many camping ordinances require advance warnings and multiple citations before any arrests can be made.

The Supreme Court’s upcoming decision on Grants Pass will be a monumental one for California officials struggling to end homelessness. Californians know well that solving homelessness requires an expansive toolbox, and anti-camping ordinances are a key lever for encouraging people to get the help they need.

The court should give the power to address homelessness and maintain public safety back to the municipalities who deal with these issues firsthand, rather than constitutionalizing a right to vagrancy from the bench.
