Applications are invited for one 3-year PhD studentship from spring 2024 within The Centre for Agriculture, Food and Environmental Management (CAFEM) Research at the University of Hertfordshire to contribute to cutting-edge research in the field of genome editing and its application in enhancing sustainable food production practices. Our project targets the engineering of duckweeds to maximize protein production while minimizing nitrate accumulation, addressing a crucial challenge in sustainable agriculture. Duckweeds offer a promising solution as a sustainable protein source but face issues with nitrate build up, posing risks to both nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and human/animal health. Building upon our team's groundwork, you will explore the molecular characterization of LemnaClCa vacuolar nitrate transporters, alongside in-vitro tissue culture and Agrobacterium mediated-transformation protocols for duckweeds.

Throughout your PhD, you will utilize innovative plant molecular techniques, including the design and implementation of CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing systems to engineer low-nitrate and high-protein duckweeds. Take the next step in your research career and apply now.

Dementia is a global health challenge and the UK has been leading the world on research to understand how to help people live well with dementia. This project examines a hitherto neglected area of research to examine the leisure behaviour of people with dementia.  Existing research suggests a time-space compression occurs as people with dementia see their condition progressively worsen and yet the evidence to understand this is limited.  The project will join an existing research team working on this topic based at Hertfordshire Business School and the University of Exeter Business School, building on their research studies to develop an appropriate framework to approach this topic of tourism and leisure.
