Protests pay off: OU releases PhD admissions notification for 2022; interview criteria retained

Osmania University (OU), Hyderabad has finally released the notification for admission into the PhD programme at the Faculty of Engineering for the year 2022. The notification was released by the university on August 1. Application forms are now available on the official website of OU, www.osmania.ac.in .

Interestingly, the university has also stated that interviews for the candidates will be conducted at the offices of the respective Deans. It is to be recalled that students at the varsity had launched a protest against the university late last month, calling for a bandh on July 26. The students were upset with the fact that OU, which is one of Telangana's premier state varsity, had not released a notification for PhD admissions for the last five years. The last notification for admissions into PhD programmes was issued on the varsity's website in 2017. Additionally, they were contesting the University's alleged decision to do away with the interview criteria for admission. 

As part of the protests, the students formed a Joint Admission Committee (JAC) at the university, with PhD aspirants leading the way. In a chat with EdexLive last month, the president of the JAC, Vislavath Ashok Naik, said, “The Vice-Chancellor has been delaying the admission notice for the last four years. In the first two years, the notice was delayed and not published. Then, there was COVID-19 for the last two years. And this year also there is no notice yet. All the students are asking for the admission notice to be immediately released.” He had insisted then that the students will continue protesting until the varsity releases the notification for PhD admissions.

The alleged decision to do away with the interviews for admission came to light when an official was quoted by Telangana Today saying, "When interviews for Group-I recruitment have been done away with, why can’t the PhD admissions be done without interviews? The plan is to do PhD admissions purely on the basis of the merit secured by candidates in the entrance examination. In addition, weightage to marks obtained by candidates during their UG and PG are also being examined to grant PhD admission. There will be no scope for favouritism towards certain students if interviews are removed.”

However, students did not take kindly to these reports and said that given the paucity of PhD seats in Telangana, with only OU and Kakatiya University being the two state universities with PhD programmes, options are limited for students as it is. They demanded that the National Eligibility Test and the State Eligibility Test-qualified criteria for obtaining the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) be retained as well from past notifications. The notification released today mentions that those who have been awarded the JRF under Category 1 will be eligible for the PhD programme.

In an attempt to explain the delay in the issue of PhD admission notification, OU's Vice-Chancellor Dr D Ravinder Reddy told EdexLive, “PhD isn’t an easy programme. The students have to do extensive research and only after five to six years they can be granted the PhD degree. Since it takes such a long time to complete, we have to wait for three to four years before we can take up a new PhD batch. The vacancies are also limited for PhD scholars in the departments. So previously, we took a bold decision to cancel the PhD admissions for two years. And then COVID-19 came, because of which there was education loss. The students are demanding that a notification be released. And we shall release the notice very soon.”

Interviews and Acceptance

Interviews for the M.D./Ph.D. Program are based on the competitiveness of the current applicant pool. The routine average GPA and MCAT of those accepted into the M.D./Ph.D. Program are 3.8 and 510, respectively.

Applicants will be offered interviews based on an initial screening of meeting program standards that include academic potential, intellectual curiosity, and evidence of research experience.

M.D./Ph.D. interviews begin in mid-November and may be paired with the M.D. interviews. The M.D./Ph.D. interviews occur in the fall prior to the year of matriculation. The M.D./Ph.D. interview will focus on the student's research interests by arranging laboratory visits in areas of interest. The day includes tours of campus, activities with existing participants and in-depth laboratory meetings with potential programs and/or mentors.

Interviews are conducted by two or three members of the Advisory Council who submit narrative comments and a recommendation of acceptance or refusal. A student may also receive a deferral for further evaluation.

We accept, on average, 2 students per year into the M.D./Ph.D. program.

General Interview Best Practices

Use the interview to assess preferred criteria on which the committee may need additional information. Ensure that the vividness of the interview experience does not overshadow the more concrete information available in the application materials.

• Establish questions that allow assessment of certain preferred criteria. Develop a scoring guide or rubric to evaluate each answer.
• Ask identical questions for each candidate and attempt to limit prompting, follow-up questioning, and elaboration on questions.
• Take notes on each candidate’s responses to be used in evaluating candidate responses.
• Be sure that all interviewers are well-versed on appropriate and inappropriate questions and the impact of implicit bias.
• Provide time for candidates to ask questions of the committee members.
• Try to avoid discussing candidates or their answers with other search committee members between interviews (discussing candidates can result in different standards for later candidates).
• Request evaluations for each candidate from search committee members, and summarize the results based on the agreed-upon weighting system. 

On-Campus Interviews

The on-campus visit has dual purposes. It is both a final opportunity to assess the ability of the candidate to fulfill all job requirements and a chance to share with the candidate the resources and opportunities available at OU.

Preparing for On-Campus Interviews

• Review established (first and second screening) criteria; determine those criteria on which additional information is needed and/or interviewing is likely to prove useful.
• As a search committee, create questions for the on-campus interview together and seek input from colleagues broadly. Develop a rubric to use for evaluating candidate responses to interview questions.
• Before setting up the interview schedule, work with the college dean, Provost, and VPRP Offices to identify individuals and facilities on campus, beyond those of the home academic programs, to whom the candidate should be introduced, based upon interests, collaboration opportunities, etc.
• Ask candidates if they have any specific offices or programs they would like to learn more about while they are on campus and try to incorporate these visits into their schedule accordingly.
• Request input from the candidate  about any preferences or needs with regard to diet, breaks, or other accommodations.
• Clearly communicate to the candidate the scope of expectations for the on-campus interview two to three weeks prior to the campus visit and provide a detailed itinerary as soon as possible.

Conducting On-Campus Interviews

• Ensure that candidates meet with people from various parts of the University (colleagues from other departments; Center for Faculty Excellence; VPRP; OU Libraries, etc.). Be thoughtful in scheduling, providing “down time” so the experience is memorable and not hectic.
• Involve both undergraduate and graduate students on the schedule, most effectively during separate meetings for groups of students with the candidate. Seek student feedback following the visit.
• Ensure that all representatives (e.g., faculty, students, staff) of OU are aware of and avoid questions that are  inappropriate and potentially sensitive personal questions .

After the On-Campus Interview

• Provide a mechanism for collecting feedback from faculty members, students, and any other stakeholders who met with candidates during their visit, so they to formally contribute their perspectives. These decisions may change once you are engaged in your research, but at the proposal stage you will need to outline a plan of research that is new, coherent and manageable.     

The Introduction:  

The first part of your proposal might start by introducing the broad context to the discipline and research space by offering some detail of what other research has found.  If you are planning to apply for a Professional Doctorate, it is particularly important that your introduction includes your professional research context. You may also want to highlight key concerns, problems, or issues that will help to underline the importance of research in this field and/or context. You will want to cite others’ work, and use this to outline a research space, or a ‘gap’ that has yet to be investigated.  

This ‘gap’ can then be articulated as the basis of the aims, objectives and research questions for your work. Think about articulating the aims of your work as a clear statement that speaks to how you see your research contributing to the existing literature or knowledge about practice, and the objectives as how you will achieve these aims. Craft your research questions so that you can (once the research is underway) provide answers through the findings.  

The Literature Review:  

Once you have set a broad context for the work, you will want to provide greater detail from the literature. A literature review in a doctoral proposal is of key importance. You will want to include and critically synthesise some of the important literature in the field. A synthesis means that you will bring together similar findings, settings or themes. Avoid writing paragraphs that just describe what other research has found. The academic panel is interested in your work and your position in relation to the existing literature. Your writing should focus on key points supported by relevant citations.   

The Methodology:     

You will want to demonstrate that you have read a sufficient body of work that allows you to propose a methodology that will provide the framework to your research . This will allow you to justify your approach and show how your methodology will allow you to collect and analyse the data in ways that will help you answer your research questions and achieve your research aims. An important part of your methodology will be a section on ethics .  

Citations and referencing  

Citing others’ work is an important part of your proposal. When you report on others’ findings, ideas or theory you must provide an in-text reference and the full reference in the reference list at the end. Click here for The Open University guide to referencing . Keep any direct quotations to a minimum (the panel is interested in your words not others’).   

Before submitting your work  

The academic panel will pay close attention to the way in which your proposal is structured and written, so take time to write, reflect on and revise your work before submission.  

Conventions in academic English are discipline specific, but there are some points you may want to bear in mind as you read and revise your work. Academic writing is formal (take a look at any journal article) and so you should avoid contractions and colloquialisms.  Structure your proposal with headings and subheadings using numbering or emboldening.  Structure your writing into paragraphs that each make a distinct point. Write in short clear sentences and check your referencing. You may find it helpful to ask your current or former academic supervisor, a family member, friend or colleague to read your proposal for clarity.

The interview

If your doctoral proposal is well formulated, you may be invited to discuss it at an interview with an academic panel.  Receiving an invitation to interview can induce both excitement and nerves. Excitement because the invitation shows experts in your field see potential in you and your research project, and nerves because the interview is the ‘key’ to moving onto your doctoral programme. You should be able to say more about the topic, literature and approach than is in the (short) proposal.  

You should listen carefully to ideas from the interviewers, who may think that the research could be approached in a different way. This kind of discussion is not necessarily negative, it shows they are interested but want to see how you can consider different possibilities and issues. Even if you have previous experience of being either an interviewer or interviewee, an interview for doctoral study may be quite different to interviews that you have experienced previously. Careful preparation will give you the best chance in being successful.   

Preparing for your interview  

Read your proposal critically and look for potential challenges to your work. What limitations and challenges might the panel want you to discuss? Makes some notes on what these are and how you might respond to them. 

Ask a friend, colleague, or family member to read your proposal and ask you some questions. Having to explain your research to someone else will give you opportunities to practise articulating elements of your proposal out loud, which will be useful for the interview.  

Create some questions to ask at the interview. The interviewing panel will be pleased to engage with your questions also.  

You will have been told who will be at your interview. You may already know some of their work, but check their profile on The Open University, Twitter, or LinkedIN to see their current research work and how their interests connect to yours.   

Remember that you have been invited to interview because the academic panel has seen potential in you and your research and they want to find out more. Also remember that an academic discussion can be robust and there is often differing opinions and sometimes disagreement. You will almost certainly be challenged on aspects of your proposal, rather than understand a challenge as a personal attack, see this as the panel being interested in the detail of your work. Your response will show to what extent you can consider different possibilities and issues, which is important in academic work. Make sure you understand the questions they are asking and take your time to answer. Be interested and curious in what the interviewers ask. How does their question or point challenge what you think about your proposal? See the discussion as an opportunity to develop your thoughts about your research and talk about it with experts in the field.
