Poster Sessions

  • Conferences

A poster presentation is a visual communication method that displays an abstract of your research.

This guide will help you organize, design, and deliver your content.

Books and Ebooks

nazarbayev university presentation

Poster sessions are a great way to market yourself, so get people to your poster by contributing to the conference social media hashtag.

Have available business cards and display your contact information for potential future employers or collaborators.

Prepare handouts of the main presentation points, and have copies of your other research.

Poster Session Tips

Focus the information presented to the main points, provide only a few supporting details. Your poster is a supporting aid to your speech. Only use 300-800 words.

Consider the poster layout.

  • Font type and size for information hierarchy
  • Color and white space
  • Add visual elements such as graph, figures, and diagrams
  • Include citations for information and images

Make your poster interactive by adding sound buttons, 3D images, transparencies, moveable parts for questions and answers, hinged pieces, etc.

*Pay attention to the paper and printing quality

Keep in mind that poster sessions are a short presentation. See the guide section on delivering a presentation for more tips.

  • Prepare a 2-3 minute oral explanation of your work
  • Do not block the view of your poster - stand to the side
  • Anticipate questions
  • Be outgoing, to market yourself and your research

Design programs.

Do not cut and glue paper to a background. See examples above of professional posters.

These are free programs that can be used to design your poster.

A well designed poster deserves quality printing and paper.

MTSU Star Party lecturer holds free presentation tonight, first Fridays

The night sky at Apache Point Observatory in Sunspot, N.M. This will be part of Middle Tennessee State University Physics and Astronomy lecturer Gregg McPherson's 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 5, Star Party in Room 102 of Wiser-Patten Science Hall.

Middle Tennessee State University Physics and Astronomy lecturer Gregg McPherson will be featured in the next Star Party presentation that’s free and open to the public.

McPherson will present “Shoot the Moon (with a laser)” starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 5, in Room 102 of Wiser-Patten Science Hall.

The format is a 30- to 45-minute lecture followed by a telescope viewing, weather permitting, at the nearby MTSU Observatory. Free  parking  can be found behind Wiser-Patten and other nearby lots.

McPherson said next year will mark the 20 th  anniversary of the Apache Point Observatory Lunar Laser-Ranging Operation, or APOLLO, experiment.

“Some of the most iconic imagery in movies and sci-fi is of laser beams shooting into the sky,” he said. “I got to intern at Apache Point Observatory in high school and the first night I saw in real life a giant green laser shooting up into the sky to span the distance between the earth and moon I knew I wanted to pursue a career in science.”

Despite centuries of humanity using telescopes to collect and observe light from the moon, this curious experiment uses telescopes to focus and transmit pulsed laser light to the moon, then records the round-trip time of flight of pulses reflected back to Earth by retroreflectors left on the moon's surface from five crewed lunar landings, McPherson said.

“Though other Lunar Laser-Ranging experiments preceded it, the APOLLO experiment can measure the 239,000-mile average distance to the moon with a precision of less than the thickness of a paperclip,” he added. “Scientists use this information to better test and understand ideas in general relativity, the shape of lunar orbit and even the rate at which the Earth's rotation is changing.”

Typically held on the first Friday of the month during the semester, the  Physics and Astronomy  Friday Star Parties  feature an assortment of interesting astronomy and physics topics from faculty members.

The remaining Friday Star Party for the spring semester:

• May 3 — Topic to be announced, presented by instructor Irina Perevalova.

Ph.D in Architecture Symposium: Paper Presentations

“ Environment  dates from [the early nineteenth century], in the sense of surroundings, as in  environs  (fw  environner , F – encircle, rw  viron , oF – circuit); it was extended, as in Carlyle (1827): ‘environment of circumstances.’”

As part of his 1976 encyclopedic work  Keywords: A Vocabulary of Culture and Society , Raymond Williams obliquely introduced the term “Environment” under the entry for the history of “ecology.” In his view the use of the term, dating to the nineteenth century, only commenced with the rise of “concern with the human and natural habitat” of environmentalism. Williams’ historiographical reading of the term obscures the way in which constructions of the environment and a cultural notion of depletion were co-constituted. As with the history of the economy as an object of power, measurement, and policy in the 1930s, the history of “the environment” can only be understood through the tools used to make it legible.

Rather than seeking an underlying definition of “the environment” within design practices, this symposium employs “environmentalization” to trace the conditions of possibility that enabled the concept to be taken as a given by the second half of the twentieth century—chiefly towards the ecological cause. By critically addressing the historiographical construction, instrumentalization, and weaponization of “the environment” in the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century,  Forms of Environmentalization  aims to question how the ontological proliferation of the term has subjectivized spatial milieus as a tool to be both tamed and constructed.

President Gonzalez speaks at the University Updates event in the Baker University Center Theater

Ohio University President Lori Stewart Gonzalez hosted the third "University Updates" event on Thursday, March 21, as part of OHIO’s ongoing efforts to further connections and dialogue throughout the University community.

Following each event, both online and in-person attendees also have the opportunity to submit questions for leadership. Answers to the questions that were submitted during the March 21 event are now available to view on the University Updates website.

During the March event, President Gonzalez also encouraged students, faculty and staff to let OHIO leaders know what they would like to hear discussed at the "University Updates" events that will begin again during the fall semester.

'University Updates': March 21 Leadership Presentations

President Gonzalez began the event by sharing a brief update regarding searches for key leadership positions such as vice president for research and creative activity , and said that she would be testifying before the Ohio Senate, along with other public university presidents, on higher education issues.

Lyn Redington, who serves as interim vice president of Advancement and president and CEO of the Ohio University Foundation as well as vice president for student affairs , gave an update on University Advancement with Major Alston, senior associate vice president of Advancement and campaign director. Alston provided an overview of OHIO’s philanthropic support and discussed the 2024 OHIO Giving Day , which will be held on April 9.

Mary Elizabeth Miles, vice president for human resources, thanked the University community for welcoming her to OHIO and provided updates on human resources activities, including the planned move to Grosvenor Hall in 2024. Miles also discussed the many benefits available to OHIO employees and invited faculty and staff to learn more about the employee benefits at www.ohio.edu/hr .

Julie Cromer, director of athletics, provided an overview of the Athletics Department and OHIO’s position in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Cromer said the MAC is the most stable college athletics conference in the country and it provides the opportunity for OHIO to celebrate high achievements and give student-athletes a true student-centered experience. Cromer also shared the academic achievements of OHIO’s student-athletes and discussed how students from all across the University gain experience working with the Athletics Department.

Robin Oliver, vice president of university communications and marketing and co-chair of the Mission and Vision Refresh Committee , discussed the work of the committee and presented the drafts of the new mission and vision statements. The draft statements will be presented to the Ohio University Board of Trustees in April, with the goal of the Trustees approving that statements in June.
