16 Writing Memes That Perfectly Depict the Writerâs Life
by Holly Riddle
If youâve been writing for a while, then you know a few things.
One: the writer life is, in reality, not at all like the glamorous perception youâll see in movies and on TV.
Two: your friends, unless theyâre writers too, just arenât going to understand challenges like your writerâs block, procrastination when it comes to actually getting something on the page, or how much you can hate writing and find it fun at the same time.
Three: sometimes, the best thing to do about your writers woes is to just laugh about themâand thatâs where these funny writer memes can come in handy.
Here are some of our 16 favorite funny writing memes that perfectly encapsulate the highs, lows, and humor of the writerâs life, from the struggles with a first draft to the constant story ideas to the way your characters just live in your head rent-free (even if your novel doesnât technically exist yet).
1. Oh, you thought you were actually going to finish that novel?
Think again! Time for procrastination to set in. Writers do whatever they can to not finish that WIP (Work In Progress), until something kicks their butt into gear, whether it be National Novel Writing Month, a challenge with a writer friend, etc.
Source: Writers Write
2. Unfortunately, a writer only has themself to blame
Alas, even though you try to blame everything else in the world for your procrastinationâthe dog needed walking, the laundry needed doing!âyou just canât at the end of the day. Get that idea down on paper!
Source: September C Fawkes
3. Some days the new ideas just keep flowing⊠other days, not so much
You know how it goes. Once you get into your writing flow, the shiny new ideas beginâuntil they dry up completely and you have a bad case of writerâs block.
Source: Writing About Writing on Facebook
But guess what? We have a super helpful article on dealing with this very problem .
4. Donât worry, thoughâŠ
Daydreaming about writing and writing are actually the same thing⊠right?
Totally. Definitely. We relate.
Source: Aela Writes
5. You started? Great! Now, whereâs the plot?
Once you get started on that novel, though, inevitably thereâs going to be a time that you sit back, look at what you wrote, and really start to question whether or not your words actually form a cohesive plot. Thatâs where, of course, a writing schedule that incorporates a little beta reading can come in handy.
Your writer friends are the best folks to give insight into whether or not you truly have a story.
And! You can also swing by our article on finding the perfect plot .
6. Sometimes, you just gotta plow forward
Occasionally, though, you have to just keep writing, plot or no plot.
Source: Daddies Drarryy
7. Writing is just rewriting
Eventually, youâll have to go back and address those rambling sentences. Newbie writers may not recognize it yet, but the old pros will. Sometimes, being a writer is just rewriting, rewriting, and rewriting some moreâespecially those pesky opening pages.
Source: Liz Lawson on Twitter
8. That said, perfection isnât everything
Not everyone is going to love what you write and, frankly, thatâs okay.
Source: Aye Write
9. Your biggest fan is you
Because, after all, you wonât be happy unless you write things you actually want to read. Donât aim to please readers or other writers when youâre the first audience youâll ever have.
Source: Writeous Writing
10. But maybe try to keep the tenses straight?
Past tense, future tense, present tenseâitâs hard enough just deciding which one you want to use on a new project, let alone sticking to it while you write.
Source: Macademmia
To help you through this troubling time, check out our post on narrative tenses .
11. You and your characters are best friends forever
Oh, donât mind me. Iâm not talking to myself; Iâm talking to my novel characters.
Donât get us wrongâwe love a good cast of heroes and villains .
12. Being a writer isnât as easy as it looks
Yes, we all love writing (we hope you you do, anyway, since youâre here). Unfortunately, when many of us say we like writing, we like having written more than the actual getting the words on the page.
Source: The Darklings
13. No one understands
But no matter how easy or hard friends and family think your writing is, chances are they have no real clue what you really do.
Your parents call your writing âcute.â Friends think you lay around. You think youâre a big shot. Youâre really just drinking coffee at your desk and creating stories from the looping picture in your head.
Source: Jenni Merritt
14. An editor will not make your life easier
Editors are amazing. They make your book better. If you have a publishing deal with a big publisher, they vouch for your book and make your writing dreams a reality. They donât make your life easier, though.
That first edit letter? Ouch.
Source: The Mom Who Runs
15. So just enjoy the ride!
Itâs not always easy to enjoy the ride that is the writing life, but at least try to. And stop feeling guilty about not keeping to your writing goals for the day/week/etc.!

16. And whatever you doâŠ

- Attempting to break the world record for 'Most Repetitive Page Turner' as you struggle to stay focused on the text.
- Preparing for tomorrow's test like a professional procrastinator, because anxiety makes for great company.
- Sitting in class, nodding along like an expert bobblehead, while your inner monologue sings the 'Lost in Lecture' anthem.
- Exhausted but victorious, as you finally put to rest the assignment that's drained you for weeks.
- As the teacher fires off questions like missiles, you find yourself in full 'Stealth Mode,' transforming your focus into an intense examination of the table's profound table-ness, desperately hoping to avoid the dreaded spotlight.
- When you ghost Duolingo for just 48 hours, the Duolingo bird levels up from an app mascot to a multilingual mob boss, demanding you beg for mercy in Spanish â porque tu español es muy malo!
- While you anxiously clicked your pen during the test, that one Morse code expert in the class couldn't help but wonder why you seemed so determined to conquer Cuba, one pen click at a time.
- When the teacher mercilessly erases your uproarious Kahoot nickname, you're left feeling like a cartoon character stripped of their goofy charm in a room full of seriousness.
- Even if you granted me a whopping 67 years to complete my homework, I'd still somehow manage to procrastinate until the eleventh hour.
- As you hand your paper to the professor, you think to yourself: âWell, it may not be perfect, but it's a testament to my dedication and struggle to understand the subject matter.â
- You on a lazy Sunday night, blissfully unaware that the impending Monday test is lurking like a ninja, ready to pounce from around the corner.
- Your homework, initially presented as three questions, suddenly morphs into a complex trilogy with each part unraveling into a, b, and c, making you question if you've unwittingly stepped into a mathematically twisted parallel universe.
- The teacher's stern countdown echoes in the classroom, granting you a mere 5 minutes to transcribe the whiteboard's contents, while your fellow students lounge in their seats, slyly capturing the information on their phones with a nonchalant finesse.
- Teachers in regular classes, wielding their 'stop talking!' authority like seasoned bodybuilders, versus teachers in the current era, who implore with puppy-dog eyes, 'Please, someone, say something,' as they navigate the challenges of remote learning.
- Prepared to absorb the entire semester's worth of knowledge in just 12 hours, you channel your inner Eleven from Stranger Things, ready to unleash your supernatural cramming abilities.

From the acres of books on every grad studentâs reading list to the challenges of navigating the arcane traditions of academia, Ph.D. memes illustrate many of the pitfalls that often come with the territory of pursuing a doctoral degree. But donât let these hot takes on the challenges of getting a Ph.D. scare you off! Stick around while we dissect popular Ph.D. memes and separate fact from fiction.
These are a few common themes found in Ph.D. memes:
- Graduate school is lonely and isolating.
- Graduate students are always stressed.
- Dissertation chairs are the worst.
- Itâs impossible to finish a Ph.D.
#1 Graduate School is Lonely
The memes donât lie: thereâs some truth to this. When talking about the hazards of graduate school, loneliness is a common refrain. Some graduate students do experience feelings of isolation during their programs, and itâs not hard to understand why.
Earning a Ph.D. is perhaps the most rigorous intellectual exercise a person can attempt, and the coursework requires many hours of reading and writing every weekâand thatâs before you even start thinking about your dissertation.
While itâs easy to isolate yourself during your Ph.D. program in order to keep up with the demands of your workload, itâs also critical to regularly come up for air. One question that I always like to ask students prior to starting their Ph.D. program is what their support system looks like. Keep in mind that having a social life and being around people is an important key to mental health and general well-being, and having that support will help you get through the most solitary stretches of your Ph.D. program.
#2 Graduate Students are Always Stressed
Ph.D. memes make it seem like every moment of graduate school is laced with the nerve-wracking frisson of soul-deep stress. Like every grad student persists only through a combination of teeth-gritting willpower and an IV drip of caffeine.
While pursuing a Ph.D. is no walk in the park, the memes exaggerate. Will you spend hours upon hours every semester with your nose buried in research? Yes, absolutely. Is the stress constant and unrelenting? Of course not. Or, at least, it shouldnât be.
The stress of a Ph.D. program should not be overwhelming, and if it is, the program that youâre in may be a bad fit for you. Another possibility is that youâve found the right program, but at the wrong time. The demands of a Ph.D. program are a lot on their own, and when external stressors are added to the mix (caregiving responsibilities, relationships, financial strain, etc.), it can be too much. If the stress of your Ph.D. program becomes a burden to your mental health, itâs probably a good time to step back and reevaluate your priorities.
For less serious cases of feeling overwhelmed, there are plenty of good ways to ease stress during your Ph.D. program. When I was in graduate school, I always looked forward to weekend outings with my friends from my cohort.
Getting out in nature is another great way to take your mind off of your work, if only for a few hours. Whether itâs going to the gym, spending time on a favorite hobby, or binge-watching a show, pencil some relaxation into your busy schedule.
#3 Dissertation Chairs are the Worst
Another common theme in Ph.D. memes is the dreaded contentious relationship between graduate students and their dissertation chairs or advisors. Sometimes portrayed as a dragon to be slain before the grad student can claim their rightful place in the hallowed halls of academe, dissertation chairs are often characterized by their sharp teethâand sharp tongues. No matter the discipline, the rapport between student and advisor is generally perceived as being adversarial. But it shouldnât be.
As a graduate student, having a strong relationship with your dissertation chair is vital, and it can take some work. Before approaching a faculty member to chair your dissertation committee , make sure that you know what to look for when trying to fill this important role.
Choose a chair who has time to work with you and can be invested in your project. An ideal chair is one who communicates and is responsive, as well as someone who will advocate for your research. Selecting the right chair will save you a lot of headaches in the future.
#4 Itâs Impossible to Finish a Ph.D.Â
Of all the sentiments frequently featured in Ph.D. memes, the idea that completing a doctoral degree is akin to performing a miracle is perhaps the most pernicious. While I see the humor in many Ph.D. memes (and Iâve even been known to post them on my office door), I also think that accepting this narrative as reality is self-defeating. When you are admitted into a Ph.D. program, itâs because youâve already demonstrated the qualities needed to be successful in that program. Keep that in mind.
While there is some variation across disciplines and specific programs, the path to earning a Ph.D. is well-traveled. Legions of scholars before you have been in your shoes, and youâll face the same challenges that they did. So laugh at the memes all you want and donât hesitate to share them, but do so with the knowledge that while they may have a grain of truth, they also depict the extremes and have no bearing on your success. Save your favorites for your own office door, and then get back to work.

A University of York English graduate has gained a top grade for his trailblazing dissertation on the social media phenomenon of âmemesâ.
Memes are virally-transmitted symbols and ideas – generally knowledge, jokes and gossip – that spread rapidly via social media, often changing slightly as they travel from person to person.
Julian Porch’s 8,000-word dissertation, which was awarded a First, takes stock of where we are with memes today and how we got there. It also analyses memes as a form of political discourse, and explores how they are pushing the boundaries of how people communicate and create comedy.
Despite their popularity and reach, relatively little academic work has been done on memes. This allowed Julian to seize the opportunity to do some really original and up-to-date research and thinking.
Professor Helen Smith, Head of York’s Department of English and Related Literature , said: “It was hugely exciting to have the chance to work with Julian on this cutting-edge project.
“The history of communication - how people create and convey meaning - is a central part of literary studies these days, and an area where English at York has real strengths. We study everything from the question of how scribes transformed the works of Chaucer, to how the printing press created new media possibilities.
“So Julian's work draws on a very rich tradition of scholarship and research, and poses important questions about how meaning is constructed on line, how reading communities are created, and how they deliberately exclude those who aren't in the know.”
Julian acknowledges that memes have undergone many transformations since their infancy and identifying exactly when they began is not easy.
He said: “It’s hard to pinpoint ‘the rise of the meme’, but certainly some of the earliest examples of memes as we understand them today are Rage Comics. Characterised by stock photos with an accompanying caption in Impact font, Rage Comics are the grandparents of the multifaceted memes we see today.”
Julian particularly likes ‘post-ironic’ memes – memes which are completely abstract. He said: “Post-ironic memes are often completely absurd images coupled with near-incomprehensible captions which have been deliberately misspelled. And yet a lot of people in online communities find these really funny. That's a real interest of mine - how comedy is being created in these abstract and bizarre ways."
Political discourse
Through his dissertation, Julian identifies both the positives and negatives of memes in terms of political discourse. For example, he believes memes are successfully engaging a generation of younger people in politics and world events.
However, he points out that there is a risk of memes oversimplifying the nuances of specific policies and party politics into simple titbits produced for comedic or entertainment value as opposed to sincere political engagement.
But whether positive or negative, Julian firmly believes memes are much more than a passing fad.
“Memes are absolutely here to stay,” he said. “They have ingrained themselves into the essence of social media consumption and communication via digital media more generally. As long as these platforms exist, so will memes.
“Due to the speed at which social media can absorb and disseminate information, the viral nature of memes enables them to be created and spread and viralised within moments of an event occurring. When responding to significant world events, memes can very simply encapsulate those situations, ideas, thoughts and feelings in an easily consumable medium. They satisfy both a desire for immediacy in an increasingly interconnected world and a wish to have a voice in those conversations.”
Julian graduated from York’s Department of English and Related Literature this summer with a 2:1 honours degree overall and is now working as the Academic Officer with the University of York Students’ Union (YUSU).
