Studying in KMTC: Application, Admission to Graduation Steps

Last updated on: December 15, 2023 by Kenyayote Reporter 7 Comments

Below are step-by-step guides of studying at KMTC Kenya. From application, and admission to graduation.

About KMTC Kenya

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) is one of the largest higher institutions of learning in Kenya that offers medical-related courses. KMTC has a number of campuses distributed across the country in various counties.

Studying in KMTC tutorials, from application, admission, placement to graduation

KTMC Admission

For one to be admitted and pursue a diploma course in KMTC, he/she has to attain a minimum of C (plain) with specific qualifications of subjects depending on the course of choice.

KMTC Intakes

When intakes are advertised applications are done online via kmtc portal (learn how to apply for kmtc admission ). Applications have to be accompanied with a non-refundable fee of shillings 2000 paid via Mpesa Paybill or Bank.

Most campuses have intakes in September but some have both September and march intakes of every year.

KMTC Admission Selection criteria

The selection of students to join KMTC is done randomly for those who meet admission requirements and those who have been placed are required to download admission letters from KMTC admission portal . Admission letters contain details like the course, duration of the course and the campus placed.

KMTC School Fees

School fees vary from one academic year to another.  However, the estimated average fee is Kenya Shillings 80,700 per academic year for regular students and Ksh. 120,700 per academic year for self-sponsored students.  The fee is exclusive of the Accommodation costs as you have to pay at the campuses where you have been placed.

You are required to pay fees for the whole academic year for first years but continuing students can pay per semester.

Students are also required to clear their fees before they sit for their exams.

KMTC Accommodation

Accommodation is available but not guaranteed that each student can get. It is given on a first come first serve basis for students who have completed paying their school fees.

Academic Year

In an academic year, there are two semesters with long and short holiday. A long holiday has a break of 4 weeks (August) while a short holiday has a break of 2 weeks (December).

Class Transition Requirements

For one to move from one class to another he/she has to attain a pass mark given which is a minimum of 50% in each subject learned. Failure to attain the pass mark requires the student to re-sit for a supplementary examination for the subjects failed. If no improvement in 2 subsequent exams then he or she is advised to repeat that year of study.

Final qualifying examination and Graduation

There is a final qualifying examination (FQE) done at the end of 3 years of study. For nurses, it is 3 and a half years. Failure to attain the required FQE pass mark necessitates the student to do a supplementary exam. After passing the supplementary examination, one can join other students in graduating.

Being licensed to work

For a KMTC graduate to work in Kenya as a nurse, clinical officer, pharmacist or pharmaceutical technologist laboratory technologist, radiologist/ sonographer, etc he or she must be certified by respective licensing boards by doing a board examination. Some of the licensing boards include;

  • Clinical Officer – Clinical Officer Board (COC)
  • Pharmacy – Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB)
  • Nurses – Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK)
  • Laboratory technician – Kenya Medical Laboratory Technician and Technologist Board (KMLTTB)
  • Imaging sciences – Radiation Protection Board (RPB)

That marks the end of your KMTC study life. We have detailed articles  and tutorials on KMTC Admission application process , COC portal user guide , PPB license registration guide e.t.c

KMTC does not offer degree courses. You might be interested to apply through KUCCPS, if application time has lapsed then the alternative is applying as a private sponsored student.

KMTC higher diploma fees structure [2024 Intake]

Last updated on January 17th, 2024 at 08:38 am

To complete our coverage of higher diploma courses offered in KMTC, below is the current KMTC higher diploma fees structure

Go through it if you’re planning to join KMTC for any of their higher diploma courses as you prepare for the next step in your career…you obviously want to have your finances in order before enrolling

Table of Contents

KMTC higher diploma fees structure

We shall look at it in a very summarized form—we won’t go into the details like the different vote heads and how much each cost.

That is because what most of you want to know is the total KMTC higher diploma fee per year including for courses such as KMTC higher diploma in critical care nursing.

Summarized KMTC higher diploma fee structure

Now, you will be paying between Kshs.122,200.00 to Kshs. 185,000 per year to study a Higher Diploma course at KMTC.

And that is standard across all the programmes (at least, at the time of writing this)

So yes, full fees for one  year is between 120K to Kshs. 185k  regardless of the KMTC campus you will be learning at.

Fee structure for KMTC higher diploma – specific programmes

KMTC higher diploma in Community Heath& HIV AIDS Care- Inservice : Kshs.182,700.00

KMTC higher diploma in Pall-iative Nursing Care: Kshs.147,500.00

Other In-service Higher Diplomas: Kshs.122,200.00

What else you need to know about KMTC fee structure for higher diploma courses

Now, the aforementioned is simply tuition fees….

In a nutshell, budget for accommodation money as well as food separately- it isn’t included in the above fees.

Of course, you might be aware that KMTC campuses are not enough for everyone and you’re likely to be living outside college and paying own rent as well as buying your own food.

By the way, chances are you’re already working so you don’t want to go to college fulltime.

KMTC fees structure for higher diploma – Is there HELB loan for KMTC higher diploma students?

Well, the loan is 50-50….

So, if possible, look for some of the fee (commitment fee), then try to apply for Afya Elimu Loan (or HELB itself)…you may qualify or not, depending on the information you provide when applying and your financial situation.

In other words, it is not called HELB loan- when it comes to KMTC students- though it is still administered by HELB but rather, they call it Afya Elimu Loan

Of course, you need to wait for applications to open…so keep checking HELB portal.

Otherwise, if you’re in a bad place financially, it may make sense to explore all other financial assistance options available to you including your employer’s financing for continuing education, if your organization has such.

Also, Google for scholarships that you could qualify for.

KMTC fee structure for higher diploma courses – Can I Pay in Installments?

KMTC allows you to pay the fee in 2 installments.

After all, the are two semesters in a year so you can divide the fee by two and pay the first half as you report for the first sem and the remaining half as you go for sem 2.

How to pay fee

Bank name:  National Bank of Kenya

Bank Branch:  The Hospital Branch

Account number to use:  01003086514000

Account Name to type:  Central Collection Account

How to contact KMTC

If you have specific questions about the fee for a particular higher diploma, please reach out to KMTC using these details:

KMTC higher diploma fees structure – Final words

Please note that you will have other unforeseen small costs (stationeries, medical equipment, bundles –if you’re learning online-, travelling, Practical attachment, Research, and the like) during your study period so budget appropriately.

PS: The above Fees structure can change abruptly so confirm with the KMTC first before you start planning.
