Gallery question sample answer

Sample – Leinster House

Leinster house.

Architect:   RICHARD CASTLE/CASSELS/CASSEL

Period:       GEORGIAN – (1745)

Style:           PALLADIAN

  • Leinster House is now Dail Eireann
  • Designed for the Earls of Kildare and Leinster, The Fitzgeralds.
  • At that time, area was completely undeveloped .
  • James FitzGerald, 1st Duke of Leinster was warned by his friends against building a townhouse ‘in the country ’.
  • Knew society would follow his example and he was right. Within twenty years, Merrion Square was being developed…
  • He caused an unfashionable area of the city to become a desirable one.
  • On becoming the Duke of Leinster (Dublin and Kildare are in the province of Leinster) the house was renamed Leinster House.
  • Leinster House, built on the edge of Molesworth Fields is pretty much a country house constructed in town
  • It remains unequalled in terms of its scale and grandeur.

THE EXTERIOR

  • The house has two entrances.
  • The central block is three storeys tall and 11 bays wide The building has three storeys and has a three-bay breakfront around the entrance
  • The ground floor is rusticated
  • The doorway is decorated with plain moulding
  • There are four corinthian columns topped by a triangular pediment, connected by a balustrade
  • Similar to in Castletown, the windows on the first floor are topped by alternating triangle and rounded pediments
  • The forecourt on Kildare Street was originally entered through a rusticated triumphal arch
  • Sadly it was later demolished with the development of the National Museum and Library which were built adjacent to Leinster House
  •  the original main door of the building, where visitors are received.
  • Viewed from here, to the left is the National Gallery with the Natural History Museum to the right .
  • A number of later monuments and memorials are located in the garden of Leinster House .

WHITE HOUSE

  • It has been claimed that it formed a model for the design of the White House.
  • This claim may have its origins in the career of James Hoban , who in 1792 won the competition for the design of the White House.
  • He was an Irishman , born in Callan, Co. Kilkenny in 1762, and studied architecture in Dublin
  • Would have had an opportunity of studying the design of Leinster House .
  • His winning design was a three-storeyed building closely modelled on Leinster House (Palladian) ,
  • George Washington asked that the plan be reduced to two storeys

INTERIOR

  • Again, like in Castletown, inside there is a double-height hall, which has a balcony
  • Much of the original decorative plasterwork by the Lanfranchini brothers survives
  • The Senate is located in the bow fronted library (old first floor saloon. This room with its bow has an elaborate ceiling design ) and the Dail sits in a lecture room built within the structure by the Royal Dublin Society
  • Placed great importance on the interior of their new mansion.

The main staircase

  • Most elaborate staircases in Dublin
  • The staircase does not rise directly out of the main hall but from a room adjacent .
  • Now leads to the Seanad chamber

The front hall

  • Paved in black and white squares , takes up two storeys and the original chimney piece made of Portland Stone is still there.
  • The room has a coffered ceiling (series of indentations on the surface of a ceiling to create the illusion of height/ornamental decoration and is lit by the central window on the piano nobile
  • Opposite these windows there are square apertures (windows) which light the upstairs corridor

The library

  • On the northern end
  • replaces the three small rooms on Castle’s plan
  • O riginally the dining room of the Fitzgerald family.
  • The library extends the width of the building , overlooking the lawn at one end and the courtyard at the other.
  • Two fine marble fireplaces

The picture gallery (the Seanad chamber)

  • Originally the Seanad Chamb er was used as a ballroom when owned by the Duke of Leinster
  • its p roportions are the same as those of the library underneath it
  • The walls of the chamber are plain

Romanesque Architecture

The eleventh century (1000 – 1100 AD) saw peace and prosperity gradually begin to return to Europe after several centuries of war and poverty since the collapse of the Roman Empire at the end of the 5th century. Encouraged by the Catholic Church, communities began to replace their small wooden chapels with large stone churches. These builders looked to the structures of ancient Rome for guidance and for inspriation. These new churches were in the style of the Romans and therefore called Romanesque.

Bascilica Format

The Romanesque church was based on a Roman structure; the Bascilica ; A long rectangular building with a central nave and two aisles – one on either side. The aisles were seperated from the nave by an arcade consisting of a row of pillars and arches. The Romanesque bulders added to two transepts the top of the nave, one on either side to form a crucifix shape. Behind this was a small recess called an apse. This structure was the standard format for a Romanesque Church. Later on as Romanesque architecture developed, towers and other such features were added.

Romanesque Churches were built completely of stone and in some cases of brick. This was a huge improvement on previous churches which were constructed with a wooden roof – a stone roof was permanent since if would not burn or rot. Stone was cut into wedge shapes blocks valled voussoirs. These were built up to form a vault. There were two main types of vaults; Barrel Vaults and Groin Vaults.

Holding up the weight of a stone roof proved to be problematic. As the stone was very heavy – much heavier than wood, it created pressure on the walls of the church – this is called “ Outward Thrust”. As the walls were at risk of collapsing under the pressure of the outward thrust, Romanesque builders made the walls extra thick to compensate for this pressure – 2 to 3 meters in thickness.

The thick walls gave Romanesque Churches a very heavy appearance. Also; very few windows could be built as this would weaken the walls, this meant that Romanesque churches were very dark inside.

St Sernin’s Basilica, Toulouse, France 1080 – 1120 AD

St Sernin’s is a large Romanesque Church. It was located in Toulouse along the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, ( where St james is reputedly buried) so it was built extra large to accommodate the numerous pilgrims aswell as the local population.

St Sernin’s is a typical Romanesque church in that it was built in the basilica format, but because it is so large it has a few adaptions to this format. The main features of St Sernins are;

1) Heavy appearance with small rounded windows 2) Made of local brick not stone 3) An extra aisle on either side of the nave 4) The extra aisle continues around the transept and the apse creating an ambulatory where pilgrims could walk and pray 5) Nine small chapels at the back of the chuch behind the transept and the apse. 6) The nave is barrel vaulted the aisles are groin vaulted 7) Lantern Tower at the crossing of the transepts and the nave which lets in much light 8) A Clerestory/ Clearstory – a row of windows up at the top of the walls to let in light

Groundplan of St Sernins

Romanesque Sculpture

Romanesque sculpture had two functions; 1) firstly sculpture was used to decorate the church; very often sculpture was placed in prominent positions such as the capitals ( top of the pillars) or the Tympanum ( the space over the doorway). 2) Secondly, Sculpture was used tell the stories of the bible to the ordinary people. At that time there were very few books in existence as they has to be written by hand. Almost all the population with the exception of the clergy could not read or write. These scupltures were used by the church to teach the bible.

Romanesque sculpture is carved “ in relief”. This means that it is not free standing but is carved out of the background support. Sculptors had not yet developed the skills and techniques to carve a fully 3-dimensional figure.

Apostle at St Sernin's

Gislebertus; A Romanesque Master Sculptor

Gislebertus is perhaps the most famous sculptor of the Romanesque Era. His work on the Cathedral of St Lazare in Autun, France 1120 -1135 is the most original sculpture of the period. Gislebertus is a master of visual storytelling and his work brilliantly expresses the stories from the bible.

Gislebertus; The Dream of the Magi; This relief sculpture is careved into a capital in Autun Cathedral. It tells the story of the Three Wise Men being wakened by an angel and pointed in the direction of a star. Gislebertus in a very simple beautiful way shows us the kings asleep together wearing their crowns. One blanket sweeps over the three kings. He shows us the bed at such an angle that we can see all three kings. The angel is gently waking one of the kings by touching his hand and is pointing the way for the kings

The Last Judgement is Gislebertus masterpiece. It is carved into the Tympanum of St Lazare, Autun. ( A Tympanum is the semi-circular space over the doorway). Gislbertus boldly carves his name below Christs feet – Gislebertus Hoc Fecit ( Gislebertus made this).

The large figure of Christ is enthroned in centre with four angels – one either side of his head and one at each foot. On Christs right side are the good souls who will be saved and who are being helped into heaven by St Peter and the angels. On Christs left side – the Archangel Michael weighs each soul to see who is worthy to enter heaven. The devil is there to take the unworthy souls to hell. Below Christs feet the unweighed souls line up in purgatory waiting their turn to be weighed.

The Last Judgement by Gislebertus

In the Last Judgement Gislebertus shows us why he is master of visual story telling. The expressions on the faces and his use of hand gestures conveys strong emotion to us. Gislebertus had a talent for drama and his vision of the Last Judgement must have been truly terrifying to people of the medieval era who gazed upon it.

Leaving Cert art history: Louis Le Brocquy back in wide-ranging exam

Well-prepared students ‘lucky and happy’ over paper with specific questions.

Students were broadly happy with Thursday’s Leaving Cert art history exam, which was described as wide-ranging with plenty of choice.

Just under 10,000 students sat the exam, which accounts for less than 40 per cent of their final marks, having completed a practical exam earlier in the school year.

Gerard Lane, ASTI subject representative and a teacher at Presentation College Athenry, said students were happy with the higher level paper.

“The Irish section included the Stone Age, which students liked. Louis Le Brocquy appeared on the paper for the second year in a row.

A survival guide for Junior and Leaving Cert students (and parents)

“The European section had a nice comparison between Romanesque and Gothic sculpture. The gallery question in the appreciation section was straightforward and would have been popular.”

Focused questions

Angela Mary Griffith, art teacher at the Institute of Education, said well-prepared student would feel lucky and happy with a paper that contained specific and focused questions.

Students who took a broader approach may have had fewer opportunities to demonstrate their breadth of knowledge, she said.

Mr Lane said the ordinary level paper was relatively easy, with questions on the artist John Behan and Newgrange.

TUI teachers also said the questions were wide-ranging, so students had plenty of choice, while reasonably prepared students should have found it within their capabilities.

The Irish section should have suited students as Stone Age tombs came up in question one.

There was lots of choice on Irish Christian metalwork in question three, with students being asked for two examples.

“In general, straightforward questions and a broad range of topics,” the teachers said in a statement.

In the appreciation section, they said, a straightforward gallery, museum or interpretive centre question allowed students to display their knowledge.

“The question also demanded the students to describe and discuss how to display artefacts - an unusual twist that had not been seen for a while, but students should be well able to answer this and apply what they know about exhibitions to the varied artefacts on the list,” the statement said.

Straightforward section

It said the ordinary level art had a straightforward section on Irish art. Students should have known the areas well enough to answer them confidently.

In the European section, it said there was a good spread of periods, with popular choices such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Renoir and Picasso.

“Illustrations [were] given to many questions which aids the description for candidates at this level,” it said.

The general appreciation section, meanwhile, had straightforward questions without any surprises, while the gallery question was “fair” and should have been easily answered by candidates.
