J.d tovar wins the excellence in teaching award.

J.D Tovar wins the Excellence in Teaching Award

These awards are particularly special, as they are chosen solely based on student nominations and feedback. Tovar’s students wrote at great length, particularly highlighting his ability to make abstract concepts more concrete to help them understand, his generosity with his office hours, patient explanations when students asked questions, engagement with getting to know students as people, and the inclusiveness in his classroom. Several specifically mentioned that his effort at sharing with them stories of chemistry from diverse backgrounds (people of color and women) helped students to see themselves in the field for the first time, and to feel welcome. Though students find Orgo the most intimidating and difficult of all their JHU courses, Tovar has brought them into the material, creating communities that facilitate knowledge sharing and support, making them feel welcomed and heard. Congratulations, this is well deserved.

Did you know, a whopping 92% of people said they’d be open to switching jobs if it meant working for a company with a stellar reputation? ( Glassdoor )

Reader, meet: employer branding… It’s not just about fancy perks. It’s about capturing the essence of what it’s really like to spend ~8 hours a day at X company: from the values it guides itself by, to the experiences they create, and the way they treat their people.

A strong employer brand positions its company as an “employer of choice”.

Here are a few steps to get you started:

Define Your Company’s Culture:

What are your core values? What kind of atmosphere have you created for your employees? What are the benefits and what values do those benefits reflect? A clearly defined company culture will help you attract candidates who align with your organization.

Develop an Employee Value Proposition (EVP) :

Your EVP is your unique selling proposition for people who come to work for you. It goes beyond just a paycheck, outlining the total value employees receive in exchange for their skills and dedication. This includes competitive compensation and benefits, but also factors like opportunities for growth and development, a positive culture aligned with your company’s values, and a sense of purpose tied to your strategic goals. To be truly effective, your EVP must consider external market demands, what your competitors offer, the reality of your internal culture, and the overall direction of your company.

For instance, consider &pizza, a fast-casual pizza chain with locations along the Northeast. Unlike traditional fast food restaurants with limited career growth opportunities, &pizza’s EVP / No Celling policy, prioritizes unrestricted career growth, viewing employees as individuals with potential, not robots in fixed roles. This resonates with a generation seeking purpose in work, and directly addresses a major cause of high turnover in the restaurant industry.

Showcase Your Company Culture:

People want to see what it’s really like to work at your company. Use employee testimonials, stories, and behind-the-scenes content to give potential candidates a glimpse into your company culture.

A great example is Heineken’s “ Go Places ” campaign (2016), which showcased employee stories to attract talent aligned with their unique culture. The interactive online interview assessed fit and introduced candidates to the company. This innovative employer branding strategy resulted in a significant 56% increase in job applications .

Engage on Social Media:

Use social media platforms to connect with potential candidates. Share company updates, industry insights and employee stories.

Starbucks uses platforms like Instagram and X  to interact with potential employees and celebrate its current partners i.e employees.

jhu resume help

Be Consistent Across All Touchpoints :

Ensure your employer brand messaging is consistent on your website, social media profiles, job postings, and internal communications. Consistency builds trust and credibility with potential candidates.

All in all, the world of talent acquisition has evolved. In today’s competitive landscape, a strong employer brand is no longer a perk – it’s the difference between attracting top performers and getting lost in the noise. It’s your company story, whispered through consistent messaging and a thriving work environment. By investing in employer branding, you’re not just filling vacancies, you’re building a talent magnet that fuels your business success.

By HR NewsWire

Launched this year, Quantum Health is a service available to faculty and staff and their family members who are enrolled in any of JHU's CareFirst health plans. Many employees have asked HR's Benefits Service Center for clarification about Quantum Health and how it works with CareFirst and Capital Rx, the university's pharmacy benefits manager, so here are some background and tips to help you get the most from the service.

Why JHU is offering Quantum Health

The university partnered with Quantum Health so you have access to exceptional health care service and support. Your experience with Quantum Health is confidential and intended to take the hassle out of navigating the health care system. Quantum Health is free to use; its services are included in your CareFirst health plan benefits.

Nothing could be more personal than your health and the experience you have when you need health care, but the health care system can often feel anything but personal; from finding a doctor or therapist to resolving claims issues, you're often left on your own to deal with a complex and confusing system. You can ask your Quantum Health care coordinator questions like:

  • Is this procedure covered by my health insurance? How much will I pay if I get the procedure?
  • Why does my medication cost this much? Is there a more affordable alternative?
  • Can you help me find a doctor based on my needs and preferences?
  • Where is the nearest urgent care facility?
  • Can you help me prepare for my next doctor's visit?
  • Do we have access to virtual care? How do I get started?
  • Can you help me understand the information on my claim or the EOB (explanation of benefits) from my last visit to my doctor?

How Quantum Health works with CareFirst and Capital Rx

Quantum Health, CareFirst, and Capital Rx partner to provide the best experiences. Here's how:

Quantum Health—your personal health care advocate. Quantum Health is your first stop when you have questions or need help. Additionally, Quantum Health can help navigate procedures that require prior authorization, to better help you manage your health and connect you to the services that you need. Its staff includes care coordinators, registered nurses, claims specialists, and others who can help you:

  • Access doctors, specialists, and therapists, in person or virtually
  • Understand symptoms, learn about a condition, or explore treatment options
  • Understand your medical plan coverage and costs, claims, and bills

CareFirst—medical plan provider network and claims administrator

CareFirst manages your provider network and processes your claims. When you or a family member who is enrolled in one of the university's CareFirst plans needs care, you have access to CareFirst's network of doctors, behavioral health providers, urgent care centers, specialists, hospitals, and other medical facilities.

When you receive medical care, your provider will bill CareFirst for services. CareFirst will then pay its portion of your claim and will provide you with an explanation of benefits, known as an EOB.

When you have questions, you can reach out to Quantum Health. You do not need to contact CareFirst.

Capital Rx—pharmacy benefits manager

Capital Rx manages your retail networks of pharmacies and the mail-order pharmacy Optum Home Delivery, and it processes your prescription drug claims.

Quantum Health can answer questions about coverage, finding a pharmacy, or the cost of a drug.

Get started

Contact Quantum Health care coordinators at 844-460-2801 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday, or access your Quantum Health member portal here .
