Today, we recognize and celebrate the 30th anniversary of a simple proposal.

That proposal was for an information management system . Behind this unassuming title lay a simple, powerful idea: the world wide web, a way for us to share and find information freely across all of connected humanity. History will judge, but many already feel that the paper detailing this proposal was the most significant step forwards since the printing press.

Certainly, as we stop to reflect on how our lives have changed and what is to come, it is hard to escape the thought that we are just at the beginning of a transformation of society that is having - and will have -both broad and deep implications. It is also clear that divergent futures lie open before us – and it is not yet clear which path we will go down.

The web has already started to change the world around us - and how we shape the web today will shape our lives.

In December 2018 we marked another milestone. It was officially recorded that for the first time, 50% of the world’s population is now connected to the internet – the ‘50/50 moment’ . Whether you feel that this is a great achievement or slow progress, it means that all of the innovation and change that we see across our lives today is a result of just a fraction of the world being online – and not for very long. More will come, and likely the pace of innovation will only increase.

The rate of new users coming online is slowing, especially in developing countries

But it also means that many people are not part of this transformation. They cannot enjoy the benefits nor can they be the next entrepreneur bringing new benefits to others. Furthermore, as access growth rates are slowing and the penetration of digital technologies into the fabric of mainstream economic activity globally continues at pace, we risk dramatically increasing the barriers preventing large swathes of the world from meaningfully participating in the 21st century.

The potential exists for all knowledge to be freely available to anyone in the world. The risk is that we create a two-speed society (globally and nationally) and inter-generational exclusion.

The internet is also transforming our values. The classic ‘ no-one knows you’re a dog on the internet ’ meme was soon reversed. Today, we seem to be caught in a double bind with regards to our own privacy online. High-profile cases like Cambridge Analytica make us worry that powerful organizations, private and public, have all possible information on us and use it in ways we cannot comprehend. Too often this leads to a kind of digital fatalism, and we give up trying to protect ourselves. However, stories of state-sponsored micro-targeting and big brother capabilities erode our trust not only in online services, but in public institutions at large. So digital fatalism spreads, and begins to erode trust in democratic institutions themselves.

For a while, it was clever to claim that privacy is dead – ‘just look at the young people’. And yet, the apps and services that are most popular with young people are those that protect their identities, allow at least some form of pseudonymity and don’t retain historical information. We are seeing an explosion of technologies, products and initiatives that aim to empower individuals with real choice. Real choice beyond surrendering privacy, agency or the service you want to access. Not least is the initiative on which Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor we are celebrating today, spends his time: Solid , a way for each of us to have our own ‘pod’ which contains and allows us to manage all of our own personal data.

It is all too easy to think of the web or the internet as being some virtual place, separate and distinct from the real world. However, we already know that this is not true. The internet has material impact on our real world wellbeing, both for good and bad. On the one hand, the internet can enable elderly people to be supported and monitored in their own homes, improving their quality of life. It can support professionals in high-risk environments with automation or improved intelligence to save lives. The emergence of a new communications standard, 5G, with reduced ‘latency’ will enable real-time remote control in situations never possible before, such as remote surgery or control of research equipment around delicate coral-reefs.

But we are also seeing the real-world impacts that can occur when things go wrong online, whether by accident or by design. Identity theft and child safety are topics with which most of us are familiar. However, we are becoming aware of greater risks and potential risks that are emerging. An estimated 50 billion devices will be connected to the internet over the coming years. These are fridges, cars, drones, planes, oil pipeline valves, teddy bears… everything we can imagine. The boundary between the physical and digital will continue to blur.

The number of connected devices is predicted to break the 25 million mark by 2021

Even closer to home, digital exposure and addiction is being increasingly recognized as a legitimate concern – and not just for children or teenagers, but for all of us. Many are questioning the compulsion that we feel to be constantly online, checking and rechecking our feeds. This is not entirely an accident. The ‘attention economy’ has led designers to actively create products that leverage human bias and psychology to get humans to pay attention to something. Digital minimalism is the Marie Kondo of the online world. (Literally – the Amazon page for Digital Minimalism minimalistically suggests one book only – Marie Kondo’s .)

Arguably, the most important impact that the internet and the world wide web will have is the effect it is having on how we see the world – and the effect this will have on how we design solutions to our shared problems. By making information available across peer networks, traditional hierarchical structures are often rendered obsolete. Think of how the first peer-to-peer music-sharing sites swept aside traditional music businesses like Sony Music in such a short space of time (this story and others are neatly told in The Starfish and the Spider ). The web is distributed and leaderless – and yet has continued to grow and evolve over 30 years to touch half of the planet.

As humans, we constantly search for new and better ways to understand the world around us. There is a rich history of using our newest technologies as lenses to see anew the natural and social systems around us. When clocks were invented, there was no shortage of expositions, essays and analogies using clockwork as a way of better explaining all sorts of phenomena. The human body operating as clockwork was a particular topic of fascination. Some of these analogies may read simplistic or even comical to the modern reader, but others have broadly influenced how we perceive the world still today. Think Isaac Newton and the clockwork universe. We still talk about our body clocks. A high-performance organization functions like clockwork. It is baked into how we see the world and it gives us a mental template for designing solutions.

Have you read?

The web is 30 years old. what better time to fight for its future, the world wide web is 30. here are 8 things you should know about it, 3 dark trends that could destroy the web - tim berners-lee.

The web helps us all see the idea that leaderless, distributed, non-hierarchical social systems that can self-organize, persist through time and deliver positive outcomes are not only possible, but in fact may be quite common. We understand that ants or birds can act in concert for greater collective benefit on the basis of some simple rules of the road (protocols, in web-speak) that each individual follows. We can start to see the power of such a model for social organization, for movements, and for collaborating towards shared societal goals.

As the web turns 30, we might also take note of another 50/50 moment. Today, 50% of the world’s population is under the age of 30. This means that more of the world’s population have been born into a world with the web than not.

In South Africa, the children born after the end of apartheid are called the Born-Free. The world they grew up in was very different to the world of those before them.

As a greater and greater proportion of minds are born into a world which operates as much in networks as hierarchies and as much in decentralized structures and centralized authority – how will this influence how we see the world and how we organize ourselves in society?

We cannot tell. But it will certainly be coloured differently if we have shaped a web that is inclusive, trusted and safe than if we have not. Which world do we want our young minds to grow up in?

A website is your brand’s gateway to digital success.

A strong brand presence isn’t just about visibility — it’s about making a lasting impact and resonating with your audiences. By merging design with functionality, a well-designed website can transform casual visitors into loyal customers, driving growth and solidifying your market position.

Importance of a website for online presence

The shift online has changed how businesses interact, operate, and grow. In this digital-first landscape, a website is a unique online space, extending your reach beyond local borders and a local audience.

Beyond visibility and connecting your brand to potential customers, partners, and investors, your website also acts as a strategic platform. A well-designed website harmonizes seamlessly with marketing efforts, leveraging search engine optimization (SEO), content-first marketing, and social media integration to bolster brand awareness and engagement.

In an increasingly connected world where over half of consumers turn to the internet for solutions, reviews, and purchases, your website propels your brand to the forefront, driving growth and visibility.

10 reasons why your business needs a website

If you’re still wondering, “Do I need a website?” here are ten more benefits of a website that’ll help you answer that question:

1. Showcases credibility and professionalism

A meticulously designed and well-curated website doesn’t just represent your brand — it elevates it. Greeting online visitors with intuitive user experiences, polished designs, and responsive performance signals that every facet of your business matters. This attention to detail conveys professionalism, making visitors more likely to engage with and invest in your offerings.

Modern websites do more than appeal visually, they also cultivate trust. Since consumers often vet brands online before making a purchase, a top-notch website proves you prioritize every touchpoint in the customer journey. It instills confidence in users, demonstrating that you value your brand and the audience interacting with it.

2. Increases brand awareness

Your website directly reflects your brand, showing visitors who you are and what your business represents. Every web design detail, from typography to content style, contributes to your brand’s identity and personality. Such meticulous branding differentiates your business from competitors and extends its reach beyond local boundaries. By cultivating a distinct and memorable identity, you ensure your brand messaging breaks down geographical barriers, resonating far and wide.

3. Provides 24/7 accessibility and convenience

Unlike a brick-and-mortar store with set operating hours, your website operates around the clock, offering products, services, and vital information without constraints. This constant availability provides unmatched convenience to potential customers and reinforces your brand’s dedication to meeting their needs. Build trust and foster a seamless user experience by ensuring visitors can consistently access content, shop, and find solutions on your site whenever they need to.

4. Enhances customer engagement

Interactive website features do more than display content — they actively engage visitors, converting passive browsers into leads and, eventually, loyal customers. Sharing industry expertise through blog posts, showcasing your authority via portfolios, and collecting user input through feedback forms all contribute to increasing engagement .

When you encourage active visitor participation — whether through making a purchase, leaving feedback, or engaging in community forums — you cultivate more robust connections with them. Customers who feel a sense of belonging and value within your community are more likely to return for future purchases and become enthusiastic brand advocates, driving immediate sales and sustained growth.

5. Enables data collection and analysis

Every visitor interaction, from clicks to conversions, provides website statistics that help you better understand your audience’s preferences, pain points, and challenges. With integrated tools like Google Analytics, you gain insights into user behavior, trace traffic sources , identify popular content, and map out navigation paths. By continually monitoring and interpreting this data, you can make informed decisions to refine your offerings and website marketing strategies. Tailoring your approach based on these insights lets your business pivot and remain responsive to customer needs, enhancing engagement and bolstering retention.

6. Amplifies search visibility through SEO

Following website SEO best practices enhances your brand’s discoverability. By crafting quality content that offers genuine value, incorporating keywords your target audience is likely to use, and refining your site’s mobile performance, you optimize for search engines.

When potential customers look for queries related to your industry or offerings, an optimized website signals to search engines that it’s a relevant and authoritative source. This signal boosts your site’s chances of achieving top rankings, making it more visible to potential customers. This prime positioning offers a dual advantage — it increases the likelihood of clicks, directing more targeted, organic traffic to your website, while reinforcing your brand’s credibility and authority in the eyes of those users.

Since most users rarely venture beyond the first page of search results, an optimized site ensures you remain visible, accessible, and at the forefront of potential customer interactions.

7. Harnesses digital marketing avenues

Harnessing the full potential of digital marketing is pivotal for boosting your website’s bottom line . Your website anchors all your online endeavors. Every content piece you publish, email you send, and ad you run directs users back to this core hub. Through this centralized approach, your website offers a cohesive brand narrative, regardless of where visitors first encounter your business online. In the broader scope of digital marketing, this approach maximizes your influence and draws clear paths to conversion, weaving a cohesive, brand-enhancing story that increases profitability.

8. Evolves with audience preferences

Your website’s structure , from its content and design to its navigation, offers flexibility to adjust as trends and priorities shift, helping it remain relevant and user-centric. To promote a new product, consider crafting a dedicated landing page . If you aim to enhance user engagement, adjust website usability using direct feedback and collected metrics. Continuous updates and improvements also signal your brand’s dedication to delivering excellence and valuing customer feedback.

9. Establishes a competitive edge

A polished website is a crucial differentiator, particularly when marketing a small business in a saturated market. It anchors your brand’s digital identity and reflects its dedication, foresight, and ambition. When customers assess options online, a compelling website can tilt the scales in your favor, enabling you to stand out, even among industry giants.

10. Centralizes control over content

Owning a website offers total command over your content. Unlike the confines of social media — where character counts, shifting algorithms, and content boundaries can hinder your message — a website provides significantly greater flexibility.

On your site, you dictate everything, from the depth of your content and choice of imagery to the navigation paths visitors take. This control lets you meticulously tailor each site element for optimal impact. For example, strategic navigation paths can guide visitors smoothly, directing them to essential information or actions without overwhelming or confusing them, letting you present your brand’s story in its purest, most genuine form. Mastering this autonomy also ensures your website serves its purpose effectively, from informing visitors to converting leads.

8 Reasons Why Your Business Needs a Website

' src=

At this point of global digitalization, there’s no more questioning the importance of websites for business.

In today’s modern world, consumers have access to a wealth of information at their fingertips. The internet, the massive presence of consumers, and businesses that advertise online all continue to change the way we connect with and share information with others.

For the most part, competition in the online marketing space continues to make shoppers more demanding – craving more sophisticated transactions. Hence, investing in expert web design and development is paramount for you and other brands.

But that’s not where the importance of websites for business ends, however. While customer satisfaction is the ultimate goal, brand websites also offer tons of other benefits.

For one, it helps your business build credibility and helps you establish a strong online presence. Let’s discuss those, and a few other benefits in detail, below.

Importance of a website to customers

If you own a business are limited to a physical space, without a website, you missing out on a wealth of groth opportunities.

That’s because a website can be used for various online marketing strategies , while also serving as the focal and end-point for your customer’s purchase journey. Here are a few reasons as to why that is:

  • Limitless availability. One of the primary benefits of having a website is that it is available to anyone, anywhere, at any time. Customers can access your website and avail of your services or products far past closing time of your physical stores.
  • Ease of access. Websites make it convenient for people to find and learn about your company, discover what you do, and transact with you. People will be able to find your company when they search for it on a search engine such as Google, Yahoo, or Bing if you have a website.
  • Simplicity in advertising. A website also simplifies other forms of marketing. For example, a website that is linked to your social media marketing efforts can help create more personalized ads. It also helps you provide a seamless transaction from social media to web pages.

Importance of websites for business

There are a plethora of benefits that websites have to offer. From attracting new customers to facilitating conversions, websites offer so much more than visibility thanks to how technology has progressed.

And it’s thanks to these advancements as well that allowed small and large businesses alike to access these benefits. Today’s playing field is more level for businesses of varying scales, albeit with challenges unique to their own verticals.

With that said, let us discuss the reasons why it is crucial that your business has a website.

1. Improves credibility

One of the primary reasons for having a website for your company is to increase its credibility. In most cases, there are several businesses in the market offering similar products or services to yours. As such, having an appealing, professional website is the best way to differentiate yourself from the competition.

A good effective website aids in the development of a strong online presence and the communication of quality information to your customers. Your website can be the face of your company. It can showcase your expertise and products through certifications, professional partnerships, or even testimonies of other customers to satisfy the ever-increasing demand for legitimacy and trustworthiness that other customers demand.

2. Improve customer experience

Your website is intended to be a catalyst in improving the customer journey and visitor experience. A trustworthy website that gives useful information to visitors while also guiding them to conversion can help to improve customer experience. As a result, this increases the odds of converting visitors into paying clients.

3. Brand awareness

A high level of brand awareness is the competitive advantage that keeps a company at the forefront of consumers’ minds. Brands that have a high level of consumer recognition can become synonymous with their product. They recognize your logo or tagline, which makes it easier to communicate effectively through social content, particularly images and short-form videos.

Having a website increases brand awareness by establishing your image and letting your customers know who you are and what you represent by using strategies such as: building a recognizable brand through brand voice or brand aesthetic infographics or even starting a podcast.

4. 24/7 Customer Support

Customer service is a difficult task for any company. However, providing customer support online is much easier and less expensive than hiring support personnel.

This is where the value of having a website becomes clear because customer support can be provided in a variety of ways via a website:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). By having a FAQ, all frequently asked customer questions are answered on the website, saving you time and resources while providing customers with precise and relevant information.

Furthermore, a FAQ with links to related content not only provides your users with a more in-depth experience of your website but also improves your internal link-building, which is an important search ranking factor.

ChatBots. Chatbots automate repetitive and time-sensitive tasks through a template answer. This provides users with a variety of other useful information such as sign-up procedures, information about services/products, and so on. This also allows employees to focus on more important tasks while also preventing customers from waiting for responses.

Indeed, providing excellent customer service can lead to increased marketing and sales opportunities. As a result, satisfying your customers is critical to the success of your business.

5. Attract organic customers

Having a website increases organic traffic. By following SEO best practices, your website can rank high on search engine results pages and attract a whole new segment of your target audience.

When people search for relevant terms, they will see your website near the top of the results, enticing them to check out your service. This helps to significantly increase organic traffic to your website, thereby expanding your customer base.

6. Information exchange

Information exchange means that people or other entities pass information to one another. One of the most appealing aspects of a website is how easily customers can access information. A website, at its core, is nothing more than a medium for communicating with customers and providing them with information and resources.

Indeed, the essence of making a website is for the benefit of the customers and to develop satisfying exchanges from which both customers and marketers benefit. Information exchange can be done either through: Advertisements that update customers, newsletters that update customers about any upcoming events and news, or Contact forms that invite customers about any upcoming events and news.

7. Growth opportunity

A website can serve as a portfolio or resume for a business. This can be advantageous for businesses because the website can serve as a reference for potential investors who can become acquainted with your services, learn what you have accomplished thus far, and what your future plans as a business are, and invest accordingly.

A website will also allow you to effectively communicate with potential customers. You can create useful content that educates customers about the products and services that you offer.

8. More visibility

The entire presence of a brand or its items in the wider consumer environment is referred to as online visibility. You can be visible online through websites as it can serve as your internet store, office, or showroom for a very little cost.

Depending on the type of store, visibility will be limited to a certain radius around its location since only people within the vicinity know and can visit the store. However, when it comes to a firm with an internet presence, exposure and reach are limitless. Indeed, through the internet, your website is accessible and visible to users from all around the world.

How does a website’s structure actually matter?

Website structuring (also known as website architecture) describes the organization of websites and the inter-linking of web pages.

Its structure should help users find information with ease and search engine crawlers understand the relationship between pages. Good website structure also allows you to provide a great user experience which, in turn, benefits your search rankings.

In terms of the importance of user experience (UX), a solid website architecture improves usability and function of your website. A well-designed UX makes navigation between pages easy, ergo finding information is simple. In UX design, your visitors will demand that it’s intuitive, simple, and seamless.

Finally, a seamless user experience also earn you points for ranking on search engines. As your UX improves usability, it also improves your scores for core web vitals – a vital criteria for search engine ranking, especially for google.

What type of website does my business need?

The key to making your site effective is to consider your company’s needs and choose which of the numerous varieties will assist you to satisfy those needs as well as an outline for web development.

A strong business website accomplishes content marketing for your business as well as give you an edge over your competition. So, let us talk about the primary types of websites that will suit you!

  • Ecommerce website – This website is intended to sell goods and services. It can be utilized by both physical retailers and companies that primarily sell online. It’s basically an online store that directs customers to categories or departments where they may select the item or service they desire and add it to their basket. So, if you are into selling goods then an E-Commerce website is for you.

Brochure website – The sole purpose of this kind of website is to facilitate the promotion of your business. It’s easier and less expensive to develop than most other business websites, owing to its limited size and often defined format. Smaller businesses , such as hair salons, veterinarians, and auto repair shops, which cannot effectively sell their services online, typically choose this kind of website.

Thus, if you merely want to show the vision of your company and inform the public of what services and functions you perform, then you should choose this website.

Lead generation website – The goal here is to increase business by establishing an internet presence. It is considered more advanced than a brochure website since it has material aimed to develop trust and entice people to return. Lead generation methods include webinars and demos, online networking, resource guides, white papers, and email marketing.

If you want site visitors to perform a targeted action, such as signing up for a free trial, enrolling for a subscription, or contacting you for further information, you should use a lead generation website or a landing page.

  • Magazine type website – This style of website is similar to but more advanced than a brochure website. Magazine Type Websites incorporate adverts connected to the site’s content and are intended to inform and entertain. It benefits businesses that employ blogs and affiliate marketing. This style of website is frequently used by businesses that market products from several producers.

Staying afloat without a business website is impossible

This is an era of high technology and automation. Your customers are online, your competitors are online, and if you’re not there to intervene, your competitors and your customers will connect, leaving you long forgotten – out of sight out of mind.

A website is a vital approach if you want to grow your business and attract new consumers. In a rather stark contrast, not having a website has a whole host of disadvantages , such as automatically losing the opportunity to communicate with a wider reach of audience. Moreover, having a clear and simple website that is clear and simple will serve as a bridge between your company and potential customers. Such interconnectedness is critical in promoting and popularizing your business.

While having a business without a website is entirely plausible, it would be rather difficult to stay afloat and maintain your business without one considering the reach that an online presence has in your business. And, by the time you realize that your business is going under, it will already have been too late to save what you have built.

Key takeaways

In the age of the internet, websites are essential now more than ever as they offer you a wide range of benefits and growth opportunities. Hence, having a website ensures that your business is here to stay in the long run.

Those said, here are some key takeaways that you might want to consider in determining the importance of a website:

  • Prioritize your customer user experience. User experience is and should always be the number one goal of your website as it allows your visitors to be potential customers. Thus, increasing revenues and brand credibility.
  • Choose a website that is right for your business. Having a website that coincides with what your business offers is important since you don’t want customers to visit a website that is not really in line with the product, service, or business that you offer.
  • Put an emphasis on a well-structured business website. A well-structured business website makes your website easier to navigate resulting in customers staying for longer periods thus decreasing the rate at which customers drop your website as, at first glance, they do not find what they are looking for.

  • Negative Brand Perception : A website that looks bad can also make your whole business look bad. People may think you’re not professional, credible, or trustworthy.
  • Decreased Conversion Rates : Potential customers may not take the desired action if your site is hard to use. This means fewer purchases, signups, and less revenue.
  • Increased Maintenance Costs : A poor website design is difficult to update or maintain. This means you might have to spend more time and money than you should.

What Is the Purpose of Web Design?

Listed Below are 12 Reasons Proving the Importance of a Website  for your Business :

24/7 Online Presence

One of the major advantages of having a website is that it is accessible to anyone, anywhere, anytime from united states to India. Even during non-business hours, customers can access your website and avail your services or get the information they need, which is one of the key elements of having a business website. The website is always at work to ensure that customers are always served with the information they need from the comfort of their homes.

24/7 Customer Support

Providing customer support is a tough job for any business. However, providing customer support online is much easier and more cost-efficient than hiring personnel to provide support. This is where the importance of having a website becomes clear, as customer support through a website can be provided in various ways:

This is the most commonly used medium. All the frequent customer queries are answered on the website, saving your time and resources while  providing precise and relevant information to customers.

2. Chatbots :-

Chatbots on websites also do the job of addressing frequent customer queries through template answers. Chatbots can also provide users with many other important pieces of information like signing-up procedures, information about services/products, and so on.

Information Exchange

Over 50% of the customers expect any brand or business to have an online presence where they can access their services. One of the most captivating aspects of a website is how easy it makes information accessible to customers from united states to every part of the world. At its core, a website is nothing but a medium to communicate with customers and provide them with information and resources. Here are a few ways in which websites help to exchange  information:

  • Advertisements that update customers about the latest offers on products and services
  • Newsletters that update customers about any upcoming events and news
  • Contact forms that invite inquiries or requests from customers

Establish Credibility and Build Trust

Just like in the old days, when customers expected businesses to have contact numbers and addresses mentioned in their information brochure, customers nowadays expect businesses to have a website or online presence. This is the most crucial and primary step in establishing trust. From this perspective, for a business, a website is highly important. To take it a bit further, if a business’s website is superlative in its features and navigation, customers are more inclined to trust the brand and avail of its services. Therefore, websites are essential for businesses to establish their credibility and gain the trust of their customers. This can then be further boosted by local SEO services to attract a local demographic for businesses that are new in the market.

Professional Web Design

Website visitors have no reason to stay on any web page unless they’re tempted to. Visitors can get bored very easily and expect something unique to capture their interest whenever they’re visiting any website. Hence, it is crucial that businesses build their websites with immaculate design so that customers are offered exceptional features and convenient navigation. This will encourage more visitors to take a peek at your website, and potentially buy from your business.

The accessibility of your business grows exponentially with a website, as it can be accessed from any corner of the world. Hence, websites help businesses break geographical barriers and significantly increase their sales.

There is no limit to the revenue that could be generated by your website. If the reach of your website can cross the borders, the revenue can reach sky high. All you need to do is optimize your site and make sure that your audience finds you when they are looking for you. Besides that, you can also give some of your digital space on your website to display ads. Let’s say your site is about reviewing or selling mobile phones. You can give some of your digital space on your website to display ads relevant to these phones. This is just an additional way with which you can generate additional revenue.

Cost-Effective

A physical store requires a massive investment for owning or renting a commercial space. Besides that, furniture, interiors, and employees are also some additional expenses that cannot be ignored. On the other hand, creating a website is very easy and cost-effective. With CMS like WordPress, Shopify, or Wix, one can easily create a website with little or no help. Only if you are setting up a complex website like E-commerce or one with thousands of pages, or complex filters and facets, then you might need the help of experts. However, the cost incurred will still be minimal in comparison to setting up a physical store.

Websites can become your online store, office, or showroom at a very minimal cost. A physical store will have visibility within a particular radius of its location, depending on its type. However, when it comes to a business with an online presence, the visibility or the reach has no bound. Users from any part of the world can access the website.

Marketing plays a crucial role in the expansion of any business. Having a website makes it pretty easy to spread the word about your business when people are searching for them. Let us say your offline business is doing well, and now you want to expand it online. If you have a website, you can make it appear on a Search Engine whenever people search using a keyword. There are two types of marketing methods that make this possible. One is Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and the second is Search Engine Marketing (SEM). The SEM is sometimes also referred to as Pay Click  (PPC). Besides SEO and PPC , you can also market your website using social media, display Ads, and other techniques. You can set up a target audience of your choice and use demographics like age, gender, location, and so on, for the same. You can go as broad as you want or as specific as you wish.

A digital marketing agency with proven success records can help you create and execute a marketing plan for your business that would drive relevant users to your website.

Showcasing Your Products and Services

A website serves as a digital showroom for your products or services. With high-quality images, informative descriptions, and engaging videos, you can effectively showcase your offerings, highlight their unique features, and persuade potential customers to make a purchase.

Do not limit your website to just selling products or providing services. Create a portfolio that shows how well you are doing in the business. Let us say your business is into travel and tourism. You can create a video portfolio of a family that shows their overall travel experience, from booking tickets to reaching the destination and the arrangements made for them by your business. You can ask them to share their feedback in a video format and add it to the portfolio . Such portfolios help build the trust of people in your business.

Having a website has become crucial in this digital age. A business with no website loses multiple opportunities that could come online. Apart from these benefits, a website has many other advantages to offer your business in numerous other ways. For example, a website can provide a map or directions to their business locations or offices. If someone wants to know about a business at their convenient hour, a website can help them with the same since it is accessible at any time. A well-designed and engaging website can strengthen the brand image. Therefore, to make your business successful, it is crucial to have  a professional website.

Growth Opportunity

A website can act as a company’s portfolio or resume. This can prove to be beneficial for businesses as the website can act as a reference for potential investors who can get acquainted with your services, know what you have achieved so far and what your future plans are as a business, and invest accordingly.

Brand Awareness

A website can help your business build brand awareness from united states to every part of the world. A website showcases your services or products, and generates awareness about them. It helps in establishing your image as a brand by letting your website visitors know what your business represents and how it can help them.

Generate More Leads

When anyone searches online about a particular service or a product, they should be able to find your website in the results. When they come on your website, they should be informed about how your business can help them. This is the best and the most effective way to generate leads with a high chance of a conversion. Your website is the best way any customer can get in touch with you, and possibly convert into a lead.

Increase Organic Traffic

If you follow the best SEO practices, your website can show up high on SERPs and attract a whole new segment of your target audience. Ranking high means that when people search for relevant terms, they are going to see your website on the top results, which will entice them to check your service out. This helps in significantly increasing the organic traffic on your website, and thus growing your customer base.

Improve Customer Experience

Your website is meant to be a catalyst in boosting the customer journey and experience of the visitors. A reliable website that provides relevant information to the visitors, as well as guides them into conversion will help improve customer experience from USA to every part of the world. This further improves the chances of conversion of the visitors into paying customers.

Simplifying Data Collection and Analytic

By integrating web analytics tools, you can monitor your website’s performance, track user behaviour, and gather essential data. This information can help you make data-driven decisions, optimize your marketing strategies, and ultimately, achieve better results.

The importance of a website in today’s digital landscape cannot be overstated. By investing in a well-designed, SEO-friendly website, you can significantly improve your online presence, credibility, and overall success. Don’t miss out on the countless opportunities that await you in the digital world – start building your website today!

importance of website essay

Poor website design can lead to several challenges for businesses. These include low conversion rates, low engagement rates, and more.

Many challenges come with poor web design. Poor web design can lead to a difficult to navigate and understand website. Poor web design can also lead to a website that is difficult to use, leading to a negative user experience.

Poor web design can also hinder the business’s ability to reach its target audience or customers. You may not optimize the website for mobile devices and thus will not be as accessible as it could be.

Poor web design affects the business’s overall success by limiting its ability to grow in both size and reputation.

That’s why businesses need to invest more in web design and development for their business.

What is web design and development?

Before we figure out the importance of proper web design and development, let’s first define them.

Web design and development create websites and applications that are easy to use, visually appealing, and accessible to a wide range of devices.

Web design is the visual aspect of a website or application. It includes everything from the layout, colors, graphics, and images to the site’s typography. Web developers are responsible for designing these aspects. A web developer will also create a site map for the website or application before it goes live. Here’s a helpful guide on how to find web developers for your business.

Web development makes a site or application work in the first place. It includes programming scripts, server configuration, database management, and more. Web developers do not need to know about graphic design. Still, they need to understand how to create an intuitive user interface that is responsive across devices such as smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers. Utilizing a graphic design tool can aid in creating visually appealing and user-friendly interfaces without the need for in-depth graphic design expertise.

Another great alternative is Web flow development , which allows designers to construct websites visually without programming skills. A Webflow developmen t agency designs a professional website for you using its in-built visual design editor, but the website gets developed in Webflow’s own semantic code. Thus, there’s less chance that construction claims can occur, and the design is smoother from the get-go.

8 benefits of web design and development in your business

Now that you know more about web design and web development for your business let’s discuss precisely the benefits that your business can get from investing more into better web design and development.

1. Sales growth

Web design and web development are the keys to a good website. A well-designed website will provide your business with sales growth and improve sales. Whether you want to learn how to make a website on your own or hire a professional, keep this factor in mind.

Web design is the process of developing a website, including its interface and how it looks visually. Web development is designing and coding a functional layout for your site, making sure it’s compatible with all browsers, mobile devices, and other devices that might access the site.

A well-designed website will provide your business with sales growth and improve sales. You can do this by attracting more visitors to your site through good web design and web development practices like using effective headlines that entice people to click on them.

2. Competitive SEO

The internet has become an integral part of the way we do business. It’s a public arena where we have to compete with the best of them. And web design and web development are among the most critical factors in your business’s success on the internet.

The key to having a competitive SEO is a website that is up-to-date with all of the latest trends , easy to navigate, and looks great. But this isn’t as easy as it sounds.

You need to consider many things when designing or developing your website, like how fast it loads, how much data it uses, whether or not it’s mobile-friendly, and if the content is relevant and engaging for your customers.

Technical SEO which comes from web development and design, can help your website be more SEO-friendly.

3. User-friendly website

According to Sytian Productions web design Philippines , a user-friendly website can make the visitors to your website stay for a longer time.

A website is the most critical marketing tool for any business that wants to succeed in today’s digital environment. It is the first thing potential customers see, and it will make or break their decision to buy from you.

If you don’t have a user-friendly website, you make it difficult for your customers to navigate through your site, find what they’re looking for and complete a purchase. On the other hand, to make things easier for you, consider using the best Figma mockup plugin to easily edit and improve your designs.

A user-friendly website should be simple, easy to navigate, aesthetically pleasing, and have a great user experience. And an online mockup generator makes it an easier task.

4. Well-maintained consistency

Web design and web development are two different fields of expertise. One is about how your website looks, and the other is about how it functions. These two fields are inextricably linked because a website that performs poorly will not get much traffic . Also, a website that looks bad is not a website that many people will use often.

Both web design and web development aim to make sure your business stays consistent across all platforms.

5. Generates long-term customer relationships

Web design and development can help you generate long-term customer relationships because it provides a platform to connect with your customers.

Without a good website, you will not be able to generate the long-term relationships with your customers that you want.

The design and development of your website are what sets you apart from other businesses in your industry. No matter how great your product or service is, if customers can’t find it on your website, they will not convert into paying customers.

6. Accessibility to larger audiences

The web is a place where people can find information. But sometimes, it can be hard to read on the screen, or the site may not have an easy-to-use interface. If you want your website to be accessible to more people , you might need to work with a web developer and a web designer.

Web design and development help make websites more accessible for users with disabilities, such as blindness or low vision, deafness or hearing loss, learning disabilities, limited movement or dexterity problems (such as arthritis), speech disabilities, and combinations of these. This step means that there are many ways that they can help you get in touch with larger audiences.

7. Up-to-date marketing strategies

Web design and development are the two fundamental pillars of any marketing strategy. Web design is an art that can make or break your marketing, while web development is a science that can help you stay up-to-date on the latest trends in marketing.

A website is like an e-business card . It has to be well designed and developed to attract potential customers. A website is also a way to showcase your products and services, which will help you generate revenue.

8. Branding authenticity

A website is the first thing that prospective clients see of your business. It’s a reflection of your company’s identity and professionalism.

The design and development of your website can make or break the authenticity of your brand.

Web design is about how the website looks, while web development is about its functions. Web designers should remember that simple layouts and designs can achieve a good user experience. In contrast, web developers should consider security features like encryption and backups to ensure data safety.

Final thoughts

Web design and web development have changed how many businesses work, so whether you’re a solopreneur or a small business looking to leave a mark, a decent website will be at the heart of it. Therefore, you will need to have proper web design and web development to ensure the betterment of your business through your website’s performance overall.

How to Structure an Essay | Tips & Templates

Published on September 18, 2020 by Jack Caulfield . Revised on July 23, 2023.

The basic structure of an essay always consists of an introduction , a body , and a conclusion . But for many students, the most difficult part of structuring an essay is deciding how to organize information within the body.

Table of contents

The basics of essay structure, chronological structure, compare-and-contrast structure, problems-methods-solutions structure, signposting to clarify your structure, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about essay structure.

There are two main things to keep in mind when working on your essay structure: making sure to include the right information in each part, and deciding how you’ll organize the information within the body.

Parts of an essay

The three parts that make up all essays are described in the table below.

Order of information

You’ll also have to consider how to present information within the body. There are a few general principles that can guide you here.

The first is that your argument should move from the simplest claim to the most complex . The body of a good argumentative essay often begins with simple and widely accepted claims, and then moves towards more complex and contentious ones.

For example, you might begin by describing a generally accepted philosophical concept, and then apply it to a new topic. The grounding in the general concept will allow the reader to understand your unique application of it.

The second principle is that background information should appear towards the beginning of your essay . General background is presented in the introduction. If you have additional background to present, this information will usually come at the start of the body.

The third principle is that everything in your essay should be relevant to the thesis . Ask yourself whether each piece of information advances your argument or provides necessary background. And make sure that the text clearly expresses each piece of information’s relevance.

The sections below present several organizational templates for essays: the chronological approach, the compare-and-contrast approach, and the problems-methods-solutions approach.

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

The chronological approach (sometimes called the cause-and-effect approach) is probably the simplest way to structure an essay. It just means discussing events in the order in which they occurred, discussing how they are related (i.e. the cause and effect involved) as you go.

A chronological approach can be useful when your essay is about a series of events. Don’t rule out other approaches, though—even when the chronological approach is the obvious one, you might be able to bring out more with a different structure.

Explore the tabs below to see a general template and a specific example outline from an essay on the invention of the printing press.

  • Thesis statement
  • Discussion of event/period
  • Consequences
  • Importance of topic
  • Strong closing statement
  • Claim that the printing press marks the end of the Middle Ages
  • Background on the low levels of literacy before the printing press
  • Thesis statement: The invention of the printing press increased circulation of information in Europe, paving the way for the Reformation
  • High levels of illiteracy in medieval Europe
  • Literacy and thus knowledge and education were mainly the domain of religious and political elites
  • Consequence: this discouraged political and religious change
  • Invention of the printing press in 1440 by Johannes Gutenberg
  • Implications of the new technology for book production
  • Consequence: Rapid spread of the technology and the printing of the Gutenberg Bible
  • Trend for translating the Bible into vernacular languages during the years following the printing press’s invention
  • Luther’s own translation of the Bible during the Reformation
  • Consequence: The large-scale effects the Reformation would have on religion and politics
  • Summarize the history described
  • Stress the significance of the printing press to the events of this period

Essays with two or more main subjects are often structured around comparing and contrasting . For example, a literary analysis essay might compare two different texts, and an argumentative essay might compare the strengths of different arguments.

There are two main ways of structuring a compare-and-contrast essay: the alternating method, and the block method.

Alternating

In the alternating method, each paragraph compares your subjects in terms of a specific point of comparison. These points of comparison are therefore what defines each paragraph.

The tabs below show a general template for this structure, and a specific example for an essay comparing and contrasting distance learning with traditional classroom learning.

  • Synthesis of arguments
  • Topical relevance of distance learning in lockdown
  • Increasing prevalence of distance learning over the last decade
  • Thesis statement: While distance learning has certain advantages, it introduces multiple new accessibility issues that must be addressed for it to be as effective as classroom learning
  • Classroom learning: Ease of identifying difficulties and privately discussing them
  • Distance learning: Difficulty of noticing and unobtrusively helping
  • Classroom learning: Difficulties accessing the classroom (disability, distance travelled from home)
  • Distance learning: Difficulties with online work (lack of tech literacy, unreliable connection, distractions)
  • Classroom learning: Tends to encourage personal engagement among students and with teacher, more relaxed social environment
  • Distance learning: Greater ability to reach out to teacher privately
  • Sum up, emphasize that distance learning introduces more difficulties than it solves
  • Stress the importance of addressing issues with distance learning as it becomes increasingly common
  • Distance learning may prove to be the future, but it still has a long way to go

In the block method, each subject is covered all in one go, potentially across multiple paragraphs. For example, you might write two paragraphs about your first subject and then two about your second subject, making comparisons back to the first.

The tabs again show a general template, followed by another essay on distance learning, this time with the body structured in blocks.

  • Point 1 (compare)
  • Point 2 (compare)
  • Point 3 (compare)
  • Point 4 (compare)
  • Advantages: Flexibility, accessibility
  • Disadvantages: Discomfort, challenges for those with poor internet or tech literacy
  • Advantages: Potential for teacher to discuss issues with a student in a separate private call
  • Disadvantages: Difficulty of identifying struggling students and aiding them unobtrusively, lack of personal interaction among students
  • Advantages: More accessible to those with low tech literacy, equality of all sharing one learning environment
  • Disadvantages: Students must live close enough to attend, commutes may vary, classrooms not always accessible for disabled students
  • Advantages: Ease of picking up on signs a student is struggling, more personal interaction among students
  • Disadvantages: May be harder for students to approach teacher privately in person to raise issues

An essay that concerns a specific problem (practical or theoretical) may be structured according to the problems-methods-solutions approach.

This is just what it sounds like: You define the problem, characterize a method or theory that may solve it, and finally analyze the problem, using this method or theory to arrive at a solution. If the problem is theoretical, the solution might be the analysis you present in the essay itself; otherwise, you might just present a proposed solution.

The tabs below show a template for this structure and an example outline for an essay about the problem of fake news.

  • Introduce the problem
  • Provide background
  • Describe your approach to solving it
  • Define the problem precisely
  • Describe why it’s important
  • Indicate previous approaches to the problem
  • Present your new approach, and why it’s better
  • Apply the new method or theory to the problem
  • Indicate the solution you arrive at by doing so
  • Assess (potential or actual) effectiveness of solution
  • Describe the implications
  • Problem: The growth of “fake news” online
  • Prevalence of polarized/conspiracy-focused news sources online
  • Thesis statement: Rather than attempting to stamp out online fake news through social media moderation, an effective approach to combating it must work with educational institutions to improve media literacy
  • Definition: Deliberate disinformation designed to spread virally online
  • Popularization of the term, growth of the phenomenon
  • Previous approaches: Labeling and moderation on social media platforms
  • Critique: This approach feeds conspiracies; the real solution is to improve media literacy so users can better identify fake news
  • Greater emphasis should be placed on media literacy education in schools
  • This allows people to assess news sources independently, rather than just being told which ones to trust
  • This is a long-term solution but could be highly effective
  • It would require significant organization and investment, but would equip people to judge news sources more effectively
  • Rather than trying to contain the spread of fake news, we must teach the next generation not to fall for it

Signposting means guiding the reader through your essay with language that describes or hints at the structure of what follows.  It can help you clarify your structure for yourself as well as helping your reader follow your ideas.

The essay overview

In longer essays whose body is split into multiple named sections, the introduction often ends with an overview of the rest of the essay. This gives a brief description of the main idea or argument of each section.

The overview allows the reader to immediately understand what will be covered in the essay and in what order. Though it describes what  comes later in the text, it is generally written in the present tense . The following example is from a literary analysis essay on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein .

Transitions

Transition words and phrases are used throughout all good essays to link together different ideas. They help guide the reader through your text, and an essay that uses them effectively will be much easier to follow.

Various different relationships can be expressed by transition words, as shown in this example.

Because Hitler failed to respond to the British ultimatum, France and the UK declared war on Germany. Although it was an outcome the Allies had hoped to avoid, they were prepared to back up their ultimatum in order to combat the existential threat posed by the Third Reich.

Transition sentences may be included to transition between different paragraphs or sections of an essay. A good transition sentence moves the reader on to the next topic while indicating how it relates to the previous one.

… Distance learning, then, seems to improve accessibility in some ways while representing a step backwards in others.

However , considering the issue of personal interaction among students presents a different picture.

The structure of an essay is divided into an introduction that presents your topic and thesis statement , a body containing your in-depth analysis and arguments, and a conclusion wrapping up your ideas.

The structure of the body is flexible, but you should always spend some time thinking about how you can organize your essay to best serve your ideas.

An essay isn’t just a loose collection of facts and ideas. Instead, it should be centered on an overarching argument (summarized in your thesis statement ) that every part of the essay relates to.

The way you structure your essay is crucial to presenting your argument coherently. A well-structured essay helps your reader follow the logic of your ideas and understand your overall point.

Comparisons in essays are generally structured in one of two ways:

  • The alternating method, where you compare your subjects side by side according to one specific aspect at a time.
  • The block method, where you cover each subject separately in its entirety.

It’s also possible to combine both methods, for example by writing a full paragraph on each of your topics and then a final paragraph contrasting the two according to a specific metric.

You should try to follow your outline as you write your essay . However, if your ideas change or it becomes clear that your structure could be better, it’s okay to depart from your essay outline . Just make sure you know why you’re doing so.

The Importance of Web Portals Report

Web portals are used to provide connection from a web page to different sources. Web portals support multiple applications which are used in various ways like search engine which provides archives for a variety of information that includes stocks exchange, news, books, and electronic mailing services among many others.

Web portals are classified according to their intended functions. There are three classes of web portals namely horizontal and vertical portals. A vertical portal is also called a vort, it focuses on a particular kind of business, theme and subject. A horizontal portal covers multiple areas and acts as a display place for organizations in a similar economic industry, for instance hotel industry. Vertical information portal (VIP) focuses on the availing information, for example news, digital substance and business opportunities. VIPs support multimedia applications for instance social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter and blogging. VIPs are known to exhaust online marketing by establishing land pages according to the client’s requirements (Sullivan, 2004).

Personal portals on the internet present customized services to their users by availing links to other resources on the network. They use multiple application programs and hardware to give access to users to other available resources from different sources. They are mainly used to convey news and data, just to mention but a few. They can be very useful when one needs to access external information that is related to a specific topic.

Regional portals cover wide geographical portals with resources that are relevant to a given region for example news on weather forecasts. News portals are used by media agencies i.e. television channels, to convey information to all parts of the world. Examples include Sky News, CNN and Aljazeera. Regional portals are also essential in business to business (B2B) exchanges, where businesses come together on a website to share ideas and conduct business activities.

Government portals are identified by their domain names, for instance gov. Most countries have integrated information technology and communication into their government structures. This has led to the increase of governments that have set aside a portal for their nationals. These government portals act as a medium of communication between a government and its nationals.

This utility is highly valued in some countries because citizens use it to forward their grievances and suggestions to the authorities. For instance people who want to participate in the annual global green card lottery from the United States of America, they will have to provide their private information through the US government portal (USA.gov). In some countries the government runs different portals for various purposes for example for instance the portal for persons with disability may vary from the main government portal (Shelly, Napier, & Rivers, 2009).

Corporate portals are used to provide services in an organization with accuracy and reliability. It is therefore suggested that organizations provide profile of the organization in their portal. This is said to improve the credibility of an organization’s portal. In some organizations the company portal is used by employees and clients to access important services that are available virtually. Moreover businesses use enterprise information portal (EIP) to enable customers, employees, and other stakeholders to have a single connection to the company’s information.

According to Sullivan (2009), stock portals are used in stock markets by share holders to get updates on stock bids, stock prices and also to buy and sell shares. They contain the database of all shares in a stock market referred to as the central depository system. Tender’s portals are used by bidders to bid for bidding tenders electronically which is much faster than the old tiring processes of bidding that involved a lot of paper work. These tender’s portals use state-of –the-art technology that notifies bidders about the latest bids. They also enable bidders to fill electronic forms which make it easier for bidders to present their bids on the internet.

The Importance of World Wide Web

Topic Internet

World Wide Web refers to an international collection of documents as well as other resources that are linked together by hyperlinks and the URLs (Herman and Swiss). World Wide Web has brought various business opportunities that otherwise could not have existed. The following are some of the business opportunities that have emerged as a result of the World Wide Web:

§ Developing mobile Apps – Today the demand for the custom-made as well as standardized mobile apps is on the high rise. People are willing to pay for software developers to develop mobile apps for their smartphones that can aid in managing their lives and businesses.

§ Remote technical support – Computer- savvy individuals can make a living from offering remote technical support for small businesses that cannot afford to pay services of a full time IT employees.

§ Web design – Advancements in the Web technology has created an opportunity for web designers to earn a living by designing user-friendly websites for corporate organizations.

The World Wide Web has supported the establishment and functionality of the above businesses by ensuring that there is an excellent flow of information between the company and its customers as well as enabling the exchange of data between the companies and their clients without necessarily both parties being in the same geographical location.

The World Wide Web has made it easier for individuals to start new businesses by making research and development more accessible for the prospective business developers. A lot of information that is available on the web can be used for analysis by those who want to start new businesses.

World Wide Web may encourage the creation of monopolies. Tremendous growth experienced by the online business may be a threat to competitors. Substantial economies of scale enjoyed by online companies give them a competitive advantage over their competitor which may eventually force a competitor out of the market thus creating monopolies.

Editorialist view

Monopolies should be made illegal. The theory of monopoly argues that monopolies lead to job losses by the competitors. Also, consumers are likely to be exploited through higher prices (Waldman). Moreover, monopolies create separate classes of people. Monopolists acquire a lot of wealth at the expense of other people creating a massive gap between the poor and the rich. Therefore, monopolies should be made illegal.

Paul Krugman

Are immigrants the secret to america’s economic success.

A photo illustration in which a yellow hard hat stamped with many passport stamps sits against a blue background.

By Paul Krugman

Opinion Columnist

When we accuse a politician of dehumanizing some ethnic group, we’re usually being metaphorical. The other day, however, Donald Trump said it straight out : Some migrants are “not people, in my opinion.”

Well, in my opinion, they are people. I’d still say that even if the migrant crime wave Trump and his allies harp on were real, and not a figment of their imagination (violent crime has in fact been plummeting in many cities). And I’d say it even if there weren’t growing evidence that immigration is helping the U.S. economy — indeed, that it may be a major reason for our surprising economic success.

But as it happens, there is a lot of evidence to that effect.

Some background here: When Covid struck, there were widespread concerns that it might lead to long-term economic “ scarring .” Millions of workers were laid off; how many of them would either depart the labor force permanently or lose valuable skills? Investment and new business formation fell. It seemed plausible that even after the worst of the pandemic was behind us, America would have a smaller, less productive work force than previously expected.

None of that happened. If we compare the current state of the U.S. economy with Congressional Budget Office projections made just before the pandemic, we find that real G.D.P. has risen by about a percentage point more than expected, while employment exceeds its projected level by 2.9 million workers.

How did we do that? American workers and businesses turned out to be more resilient and adaptable than they were given credit for. Also, our policymakers didn’t make the mistakes that followed the 2008 financial crisis, when an underpowered fiscal stimulus was followed by a premature turn to austerity that delayed a full recovery for many years. Instead, the Biden administration went big on spending, probably contributing to a temporary burst of inflation but also helping to ensure rapid recovery — and at this point the inflation has largely faded away while the recovery remains.

Beyond that, the very surge in immigration that has nativists so upset has played a big role in increasing the economy’s potential.

The budget office recently upgraded its medium-term economic projections, largely because it believes that increased immigration will add to the work force. It estimates that the immigration surge will add about 2 percent to real G.D.P. by 2034.

But are immigrants taking jobs away from native-born Americans? No. A recent analysis by Goldman Sachs contains this really interesting chart:

In case you’re wondering, “SA by GS” refers to the fact that official data aren’t adjusted for seasonal fluctuations, so Goldman Sachs has done its own seasonal adjustment.

This chart shows no rise in native-born unemployment during the immigration surge. It does show a rise in foreign-born unemployment, which I’ll come back to. But for now let’s just note that there is no good evidence that immigrants are taking away jobs from workers born in America.

Still, doesn’t immigration put downward pressure on wages? That sounds as if it could be true — in particular, you might think that immigrants with relatively little formal education compete with less educated native-born workers. I used to believe this myself.

But many (although not all) academic studies find that immigration has little effect on the wages of native-born workers, even when those workers have similar education levels. Instead of being substitutes for native-born workers, immigrants often seem to complement them, bringing different skills and concentrating in different occupations.

In some ways the current immigration surge, probably consisting mainly of less educated workers (especially among the undocumented), is a test case. Have wages for lower-wage workers declined? On the contrary, what we’ve seen recently is a surprising move toward wage equality, with big gains at the bottom :

Overall, then, immigration appears to have been a big plus for U.S. economic growth, among other things expanding our productive capacity in a way that reduced the inflationary impact of Biden’s spending programs.

It’s also important to realize that immigration, if it continues (and if a future Trump administration doesn’t round up millions of people for deportation), will help pay for Social Security and Medicare. C.B.O. expects 91 percent of adult immigrants between 2022 and 2034 to be under 55, compared with 62 percent for the overall population. That means a substantial number of additional workers paying into the system without collecting retirement benefits for many years.

Finally, let me return to that Goldman Sachs chart on unemployment rates, which shows no rise in unemployment among the native-born but a significant rise among the foreign-born. Believe it or not, that’s probably good news.

Goldman argues that the rise in foreign-born unemployment reflects a longstanding tendency for recent immigrants to have relatively high unemployment, presumably because it takes some time for many of them to get settled into sustained employment; unemployment is much lower among immigrants who have been here three years or more.

Why is this probably good news? The overall U.S. unemployment rate has crept up recently — not enough to trigger the Sahm rule , which links rising unemployment to recessions, but enough to make me and others a bit nervous .

Goldman argues, however, that this time is different. All of the rise in unemployment is among foreign-born workers — and this, they suggest, means that we aren’t seeing the kind of weakening in demand for labor that presages recessions. What we’re seeing instead, they argue, is an increase in labor supply, with many of the new workers taking some time to find their feet. If so, the Sahm rule, which has been spectacularly successful in the past, may currently be misleading.

I hope they’re right.

The bottom line is that while America’s immigration system is dysfunctional and really needs more resources — resources it would be getting if Republicans, pushed by Trump, hadn’t turned their backs on a bill they helped devise — the recent surge in immigration has actually been good for the economy so far, and gives us reason to be more optimistic about the future.

A summary of that Goldman Sachs study.

Another time dark-skinned immigrants (that is, Italians) were accused of fostering violent crime .

There are more bad economists — in the sense of being bad people — than I would ever have suspected.

New business creation is surging .

UN signals importance of play by adopting official International Day of Play

  • Global partners have successfully called on the United Nations to adopt an International Day of Play to champion and protect children’s right to play.
  • The International Day of Play will be June 11th, with the inaugural celebration to take place in 2024.
  • Global research surveying more than 25,000 children across 36 countries reveals that as many as 73% of children don’t believe adults take play – and how it can help them learn – seriously*.

Children playing

BILLUND, DENMARK, March 26th 2024: Play is a fundamental right for every child. Yet, the importance of play in helping children develop life-long skills is often forgotten. With only 30% of adults aware that play is a fundamental birth right adopted by the United Nations (UN) in 1989** there is an urgent need to put play back on the agenda.

To drive this ambition forward, a dedicated network of global organisations, play experts and, most importantly, children and youth themselves, have called on UN member states to support the resolution for an International Day of Play. The LEGO Group, the LEGO Foundation and other founding members of the movement are proud to announce that the UN General Assembly has adopted this international awareness day.

Niels B. Christiansen, CEO of the LEGO Group said about the adoption: “We believe that all children should benefit from the power of play. For more than 90 years we have championed children's right to play, as we know that it can change lives. It strengthens family bonds and helps children develop essential skills and reach their full potential. We have hosted our own World Play Day the past two years to celebrate the importance of play. Now, we are excited to turn it into a global movement to engage and impact even more children together with our partners. The adoption of an International Day of Play by the UN is a true testament to the power of play and the need to collectively champion and protect all children's right to play.”

Sidsel Marie Kristensen, CEO of the LEGO Foundation added: “At the LEGO Foundation, our aspiration is for children to become creative, lifelong learners who thrive in a constantly changing world. We know that play fuels curiosity, sparks creativity, unlocks essential skills, boosts wellbeing and inspires a lifelong journey of learning. Play is the superpower of children, but not all children experience the benefits of learning through play. The challenge for all of us is to make play a part of every child's reality. An International Day of Play is an important recognition of a child’s right to play. Let's work together to ensure every child has the space and time to play and be the superheroes they are.”

Play is never just play Play is universal and taps into children’s natural enthusiasm and curiosity to learn. It teaches them to explore and wonder, connect ideas and experiences and gain a deeper understanding of the world. When children play, they develop essential life skills, which are fundamental to their own and society’s progress.

Amine, Child and Youth Advisory Group member France, said: “Play is not just for fun. It’s an essential part of our human nature. It’s through play that we learn, grow, and develop skills that will shape our future.”

This is why the International Day of Play network of organisations are committed to driving a global play movement for children everywhere for generations to come. The work was initiated by the LEGO Group and the LEGO Foundation in partnership with ADEA, ARUP, BRAC, Change X, Concerned for Working Children, Eurochild, Hasbro, INGKA, International Play Association, IRC, KidZania, NIKE inc., PEDAL, Plan International, Right To Play International, Save the Children, Sesame Workshop and The Mattel Children’s Foundation.

The movement draws on further global insights*** revealing that, on average, three in five (59%) children would like to play more than they do now, whilst four in five (79%) of children would like to play more with their parents or carer. Research also shows that eight in ten (78%) of children say grown-ups don't always think playing is important and seven in ten (73%) don’t believe grown-ups take play – and how it can help them learn – seriously****.

Children and Parents playing

The world needs more play UNICEF estimates that 160 million children around the world are working instead of playing or learning*****. Yet, even in their darkest moments, children can find their way back to hope, health and happiness through play.

The adoption of a UN resolution for a day centered around play, takes children’s right one step further. It creates a unifying moment at global, national, and local levels to elevate the importance of play as central to children’s learning and wellbeing – ensuring time to play, space to play and support for quality play is prioritised.

The coalition of partners of International Day of Play is celebrating that this important movement has now been ratified, recognising the true power of play at the highest political level. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating the power of play on June 11th this year, and every year thereafter.

Tips for time management in college

Julie holkovic shares her advice for managing time as a busy college student.

One challenge that many students face when transitioning to a college schedule and course load is how to manage their time.  This is especially important in engineering since students, aside from after their first year, do not get summers off due to the co-op schedule.

University of Cincinnati civil engineering student Julie Holkovic provides helpful time management tips that she has learned through her five years at the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Julie Holkovic

Civil Engineering

[email protected]

University of Cincinnati civil engineering student, College of Engineering and Applied Science Ambassador, and member of Chi Omega sorority.

Time management is something that is so critical as an engineering student with the course load because it is necessary to have free time to unwind. Through my time at UC, I have been able to keep great grades while also being on the executive board of a sorority, being involved in a student organization and spending lots of time with friends.

Stay organized

Julie Holkovic was an executive board member of her sorority, a CEAS ambassador, and more during her time at UC. Photo/provided

The biggest piece of advice I have for time management is to keep track of everything in one place. Personally, I use my iPhone calendar for this, but Google calendar or different calendar apps are another option. I also utilize the Canvas to-do list on the mobile app. This feature lays out class assignments in chronological order by due date. This makes it easy to prioritize assignments and decide where to start when I sit down to do homework.

Along with keeping everything organized in a calendar, I also set aside a block of time for homework at least twice a week and find it very helpful. For me, I always do homework on Sundays and another day throughout the week depending on my schedule each semester. When I get overwhelmed, it is much easier to take homework one step at a time, beginning with what is due the soonest and going from there.

Having time to yourself is important. Keeping a calendar is helpful to give yourself more free time because it allows you to plan out your weeks in advance so you know when you need to set aside homework time. I also find it helpful to do assignments whenever I have a bit of free time because it allows me to keep my homework load at a minimum.

Utilize organizational tools

The biggest improvement in my time management recently has been getting an iPad. The reason this helped me is because everything I need for my classes is in one place. For instance, I take notes on my iPad, do homework on my iPad, and store class files on my iPad. Having everything in one place like this makes both homework and studying easier because it is all together and ensures I will not lose anything.

If you have an iPad, I love the note-taking app, Notability. If you do not have an iPad, that is no big deal. The main thing is to keep your assignments and schedule organized so you know where everything is and you can access it easily. How you choose to do that (whether it be an iPad, Google Calendar, a written planner) does not matter.

Go to class

My final piece of advice is to always go to class. If you skip class, it will take you so much longer to try to teach yourself what you missed instead of learning from your professors. If you spend one hour in class learning the material, it will save you time in the long run. Odds are, it will take you much longer to try and teach it to yourself. The most important aspects of time management improvement are organization, writing down a schedule, and keeping track of your homework. I wish you all the best of luck and go Bearcats!
