Siya ay isang perpekto at perpektong guro para sa akin.

Ang mga guro ay isang mahalagang bahagi ng ating buhay habang sila ay nagbibigay ng ating kaalaman at gumagabay sa atin upang maging perpektong tao sa ating buhay. Sila ang aming pangatlong magulang.

Kaya dapat lagi natin silang igalang at mahalin gaya ng paggalang at pagmamahal natin sa ating mga magulang.

Talagang may nagsabi ng katotohanan na ang mga guro ay ang mga binhing nagkakaroon ng kaalaman at pagkatapos maging isang malaking halaman ay nagbibigay ng kaalaman sa mga mag-aaral para sa kanilang matagumpay na kinabukasan.

Sa aking mahabang paglalakbay sa edukasyon, marami akong nakilalang Guro mula sa aking pre-primary school hanggang ngayon. Ang lahat ng mga gurong nakilala ko sa aking paglalakbay ay gumawa ng malaking epekto sa aking akademiko at panlipunang paglago.

Sa kanila, si G. Alex Brain ang paborito kong Guro. Tinuruan niya kami ng General Mathematics noong nasa klase ako sa IX. Hindi ko gusto ang subject na Mathematics noon.

Mula sa unang araw ng kanyang klase hanggang sa pagtatapos ng taong pang-akademikong iyon, sa palagay ko ay halos 6 hanggang 7 na klase lamang ang nakalilipas. Siya ay napakahusay sa kanyang paraan ng pagtuturo na ginawa niya ang mga boring na Mathematics na kawili-wili para sa akin, at ngayon, Mathematics ang paborito kong paksa.

Sa klase niya, hindi ako lumabas ng classroom na may pagdududa. Pinapaunawa niya sa bawat mag-aaral sa klase ang paksa sa kanyang unang pagtatangka.

Bilang karagdagan sa kanyang kamangha-manghang paraan ng pagtuturo, itinuro niya sa amin ang iba't ibang mga aralin sa buhay. Ang kagandahan ng kanyang paraan ng pagtuturo ay siya ay isang dalubhasa sa pagpapakita sa mga mag-aaral kung saan hahanapin upang malutas ang isang problema.

Siya ay nagbigay inspirasyon sa amin ng marami sa kanyang mga positibong quote na ginagawa siyang aking paboritong guro sa lahat ng oras. Ang ilan sa kanyang mga paboritong sipi ay -

"Laging maging magalang sa lahat at madali mong mapapanalo ang mga tao sa pamamagitan ng paggawa nito."

"Hindi lahat ay sapat na mapalad na makapasok sa pinakamahusay na mga kolehiyo sa India ngunit lahat ay sapat na mapalad na subukan ito"

Ang buhay ay hindi patas sa sinuman at hindi kailanman maaaring maging. Kaya't huwag mong gawing kahinaan ang anumang bagay."

Filipino teachers as world-class educators

Teachers play a significant part in the lives of children, especially during their formative years. They are integral in molding students to become responsible citizens of the country.

They are at our side when we needed guidance, they discipline us when we go astray, they give moral support and encourage us to do more, and to learn more.  They teach us not to give up when we are about to surrender.

There is no proper word to fully describe our caring and dedicated teachers, and there is no career more fulfilling than teaching. No wonder we have the best teachers in the world. Filipino teachers have become so good in their career that some of our educators are now recognized worldwide as the best in their field.

For example, Dr. Jesus Insilada, the principal of Caninguan National High School in Lambunao, Iloilo, who pioneered the culture-based approach in teaching was recently chosen as one of the top 10 finalists of the Global Teacher Prize from over 30,000 nominations from 173 countries.

Insilada explained that culture-based approach is all about incorporating indigenous and local forms of art such as dances, songs, epics, local games, and crafts to engage the students and help them learn better.

Insilada shared how his approach has changed his school: “It is amazing how culture-based teaching is really keeping the children to stay in school. We have decreased our dropout rate from 5 percent to 1 percent. We even would like to make it to zero percent this school year.”

The Global Teacher Prize is a $1- million award presented annually to an exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the teaching profession. The prize serves to underline the importance of educators and the fact that, throughout the world, their efforts deserve to be recognized and celebrated. It seeks to acknowledge the impacts of the very best teachers —not only on their students but also on the communities around them.

Sabrina Ongkiko, a 2016 Ten Outstanding Women of the Nation awardee, initially wanted to become a doctor so she studied biology at the Ateneo de Manila University. Today she teaches science and English to Grade 6 students at Culiat Elementary School in Quezon City.

When asked how she became a teacher, Ongkiko said it is a result of several factors that combined her passion for service, her discovery of her skills, and the need of the country for teachers.

Ongkiko has always been passionate to serve others. Growing up, she heard stories from her dad’s meaningful work for those who have less, including building bridges in hard-to-reach areas.

She can afford any vehicle model she wanted, but every afternoon  when classes are dismissed, she is usually seen walking with her pupils from Culiat to Commonwealth Avenue, a good kilometer walk where she spends the time to give the kids additional pep talk. That’s how dedicated this Ateneo graduate is, who takes pride in seeing her former pupils succeed in life. For her, seeing her pupils succeed in life is the best fulfillment a teacher can get.

In 2014 a Filipino teacher who braves hours of daily travel in order to provide basic education to children of the Matigsalog tribe in a remote village in Davao City was chosen as one of the six awardees of the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award, considered as Asia’s Nobel Prize.

The organizers said  Randy Halasan , 31, was recognized for his “purposeful dedication in nurturing both his Matigsalog students and their community to transform their lives through quality education and sustainable livelihoods, in ways that respect their uniqueness and preserve their integrity as indigenous peoples in a modernizing Philippines.”

These are just a few of the country’s outstanding educators who represent the millions of Filipino teachers who never get tired making lesson plans and improving the lives of millions of children. They are the teachers who have made a significant difference in their students’ lives, and they deserve all the honor and recognition being showered them.

Strategies in Teaching Academic Essay Writing, Level of Effectiveness, and Instructional Barriers: The Case of Filipino Learners

This study about academic essay writing strategies was conducted in order to propose teachers' lesson guide based on the effective strategies that were ascertained after the investigation. The study used the descriptive-quantitative method of research. The University-approved questionnaire was used to identify the frequency of use of the strategies utilized in students' essay writing activities. There were 126 students and 20 English teachers in Cebu City, Philippines, used as the respondents of the study. It was discovered that the three academic essay writing strategies investigated in the study were always used in both argumentative and informative essay writing, as perceived by the respondents. The first two strategies, traffic light color coding, and planning using informal outline, were found to be very effective in both writing the argumentative and informative essays, while the third strategy, framed paragraph, was also effective to use in both writing the two types of essays. The strategies used, and the students' performance showed a significant relationship. The top barriers in teaching academic essay writing were as follows: teaching essay writing to second language learners, lack of time for explicit instruction, no strategies in place for the part of the students, lack of parental support, and lack of essay structures on the part of the teachers. It was concluded that there were various effective pedagogical strategies that teachers could utilize in teaching academic essay writing. Based on the findings, this study further presents its recommendations.

Writing is a tool for communication and learning.However, students’ performance in essay writing in Nigeria has been poor. This under-achievement has been traced to ineffective methods and strategies. Literature reveals that most studies focused on innovative ways to improve students’ achievement in essay writing without attention to essay structure-based instructional strategies. This study, therefore, determined the effects of two modes of Essay Structure-Based Instructional Strategies (ESBIS) on students’ achievement in argumentative and expository (cause/effect) essays. The moderating effects of vocabulary knowledge and attitude to essay writing were also examined. The study adopted a pretest-posttest, control group, quasi-experimental design using a 3×2×3 factorial matrix. Two Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Benin City were randomly selected. The aim of this empirical study is to explore O level English language teachers' perceptions regarding teaching practices and methods used in teaching English essay writing. The population of study comprised O Level English language teachers (N=131) schools of Karachi. Through simple random sampling technique, data were collected from (n=58) participant schools which forms approximately 44% of the targeted population. Total sample size was n=73 (n=22 male and n=51 female) teachers. To carry out the cross sectional survey of the chosen sample, two instruments i.e., Factors Affecting English Essay Writing for Teachers (FAEWT) and teachers' structured interviews were developed to collect the quantitative and qualitative data respectively. Data were tabulated, calculated, analyzed, and interpreted through SPSS Version 20, in the light of objectives of the study, and the research hypotheses. Central tendency i.e. mean and measures of dispersions i.e. Standard Deviation and t-test were used for testing hypotheses. Results revealed that students were lacking in understanding the principles of English grammar, difficulty in word spelling and use of punctuation marks in writing essays. On the basis of these findings, it is recommended that Cambridge-affiliated schools' management should provide Cambridge professional development training to teachers continually and also provide well-furnished library, language laboratory and classrooms so that teachers can provide quality input to develop students' written discourse. This study plays an important role in contributing to researchers, policy makers, curriculum developers, teachers and students to enhance students' skills of writing an essay with no errors and coherently.

Writing is one of every vital macro skill in English. It has been a part of the assessment tool utilized by the teachers in assessing the performance of the learners. However, students encountered problems in expressing their thoughts in writing, others don't have unity or coherence of their ideas, as well as the grammars and writing system even they are given enough time to answer. This study identified the level of performance in writing an essay among secondyear Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English students in terms of knowledge of conventions, clarity and coherence, and rhetorical choices. It described the profile of the students in terms of age, sex, and writing experience. A descriptive design with Four-Point Likert Scale, Scoring Guideline/Rubric, Frequency, Percentages, Mean, and ANOVA were utilized. The findings revealed that the respondents' age is 19-20 years old, the majority is female, and onehalf of them have no writing experience. The extent of the performance in writing an essay among them was "competent." There is no significant difference in the level of performance in writing an essay of the respondents when grouped according to their profile. Moreover, the study's findings suggest that the importance of going back to the basics is necessary emphasized. The basics or the foundational lesson in writing will be considered from the Parts of Speech to the making of sentences and paragraphs. Hence, it is suggested that students will practice writing and reading as often to widen their perceptions, knowledge and to improve their grammar, technicalities, and content organization. Also, teachers are encouraged to incorporate basic skills in writing an essay in the different courses and may utilize various approaches and strategies suitable to the needs of the learners. Furthermore, the administrators may provide projects and programs that could cater to students' performance in writing like conducting seminar workshops and training in writing for students.

Writing essay is still considered difficult for English students to master. The students are expected to be able to express their ideas correctly without making any chance of messages to be misinterpreted by the readers; therefore, they have to know and use the best or the most appropriate ways to write. The purpose of writing this article is to introduce learning strategies and the possibility of training of learning strategies in writing essay to English students. The first strategy is integration of strategy with the process of writing essay: pre-writing, writing draft, and post-writing activities. The second is training learning strategies, such as memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective, and social strategies to students to make writing essay easier, faster, more enjoyable, more effective, and more self-directed to achieve the desired result in their writing. Academic wiring is one of the essential skills in academic writing, and it is vital to support students' self-development through opinion writing, grant essay writing and others. This study explores students' difficulties in writing English academic essays and the dominant challenges by using a mix-method approach. The qualitative is used to collect data, while the quantitative is used to find the difficulty percentage—the data analysis uses indicators from Brown (1999). The sample of this study was 30 students in the fifth semester of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Kristen Artha Wacana. To collect the data for the investigation, the sample involved was twenty-seven English-majored students who have been studying English as their specialization at a public university in Vietnam. The instruments of this study conducted a mix-method as a qualitative and quantitative approach. To achieve the purpose of this study, the questionnaire was administered as the quantitative data collection and the semi-structured interview as the qualitative data collection. ChatGPT 3.5 – an artificial-intelligence (AI) chatbot – has been around since November 2022. To say it has the potential to revolutionize education systems is an understatement. Currently, it’s unclear exactly how the chatbot will affect the sector, but it’s clear it is both a threat and a gamechanger. There are the skeptics, who have tried to ban ChatGPT in schools , and the advocates, who think it is the “silver bullet” solution to a host of education challenges around the world.

To the skeptics’ point that the chatbot is detrimental to the learning process, it's fair to say it has and will continue to disrupt the most traditional learning tools teachers have used for decades (e.g., writing and revising essays). What follows is an uncomfortable question: With a shortage of 69 million primary and secondary teachers around the world , could ChatGPT supplement teachers, or even replace them?

The launch of ChatGPT has demonstrated the potential for the technology to enhance, and in some cases replace, some of the activities and tasks done within jobs by humans . Will teachers – considered a major determinant for student learning, wellbeing , and long-term success – be an exception? Could the chatbot independently complete tasks currently done by teachers? If so, what are the associated risks? How can teachers use ChatGPT to enhance their practice and/or improve the efficiency of certain tasks?

The opportunity: using ChatGPT as a tool

Here are some examples of how policymakers could encourage teachers to use ChatGPT.

  • Enhance lessons . A major challenge for teachers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is transforming a dense curriculum into an engaging lesson. Teachers can use ChatGPT to translate learning objectives into engaging lesson plans , get ideas for preparing classes, or draft new assignments or assessments. ChatGPT can help with lesson preparation and proficiency, but not delivery. As such, teachers will need pedagogical proficiency to teach the lesson with high quality.
  • Create assessment questions. Teachers could use ChatGPT to improve assessment questions and generate multiple-choice items. They could also use it as an input to encourage higher-order thinking skills by providing prompts for the essay questions and practical tasks . Teachers can use different types of assessment that could help students to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative skills .
  • Support with language barriers. Although it would be ideal for countries to ensure teachers instruct in their native language, the reality is that some systems – despite evidence to the contrary – are moving away from teaching in the local language and shifting toward a second language (i.e., English). In these contexts, teachers also do not know English and have difficulty teaching in a language they don’t understand. Here, the chatbot could serve as a tool for improving the teachers’ language proficiency , helping them to instruct more effectively in their native language or in a foreign language. For example, Duolingo and GPT claim to offer affordable and accessible highly personalized language lessons .
  • Provide additional support to students. Teachers could use ChatGPT to cultivate student curiosity and create ideas for their homework assignments. AI tools are particularly useful when they identify the source information used in the chats. The risk is that instead of asking for help, the students ask the chat to complete the homework on their behalf. In addition to teaching about integrity, teachers can address this risk by discussing the limitations of these tools (see Privacy Risks , Bias , or Hallucination ). Finally, teachers should direct their attention towards questions that cannot be answered by ChatGPT. Namely, questions that require specific knowledge that is outside of the chatbot’s training data, such as, human emotions or subjective perspectives.
  • Grading assessments and papers. ChatGPT can be used to automatically grade multiple-choice/one-answer tests; it can also help teachers with standards-based grading. It could create a robust dataset for teachers to analyze and better differentiate student learning levels. This has potential unintended consequences for low accuracy, poor grading or false positive proctoring (mistakenly red flagging students for cheating). When considering systems for proctoring or grading, it is critical to take measures to secure fairness, accountability, confidentiality, and transparency of their algorithms whenever needed.
  • Tutor students. Teachers can use ChatGPT to provide online tutoring services to students. This could give students an adaptive learning assistant "for free” by adjusting to the learning needs of the students, especially in contexts where teachers are responsible for many students and don’t have the bandwidth to tailor their instruction to each student's needs. According to Khan Academy, GPT could guide students as they progress through courses . This is still an early technology, and it's important to gather more evidence and require proactive supervision at scale. Non-supervised tutoring runs the risk of unintentionally harming students, as ChatGPT can not only "make stuff up" but can also lead to disturbing conversations .

The bottom line: 5 takeaways for policymakers

The education sector needs to prepare students for a changing landscape. It is unlikely that banning ChatGPT will be a productive solution as this technology is becoming increasingly prevalent.  Similarly, prohibiting students from using the Internet is impractical, as it is an integral part of our daily lives. The focus for policymakers should be on utilizing ChatGPT in the most effective way possible.

ChatGPT could present an opportunity in LMICs, though policymakers will need to ensure all users have access to critical infrastructure and advanced digital skills. At a minimum, policymakers should adhere to these ground rules if they plan to incorporate ChatGPT in their education system.

  • Collect information: Policymakers should first understand if and how teachers and students are currently using ChatGPT before deciding on any policy that would impact its use. Teachers should also be a part of the decision-making process to determine how ChatGPT will be utilized;
  • Revisit digital skills: At a minimum, policymakers must ensure all users develop some level of " algorithmic awareness " to understand the challenges of misinformation and other ethical ramifications. For instance, teachers will need explicit training on how to understand and use this technology;
  • Raise awareness: Relatedly, as part of these trainings, policymakers should disseminate information to all users on the limitations of this technology , including inherent biases, underrepresented countries, and languages, etc., emphasizing the lack of evidence available as to its usefulness for learning;
  • Hold technology providers accountable: This technology is quickly changing, and it will be difficult to regulate. Even so, policymakers should hold the providers of this technology accountable and promptly assess how to prevent the misuse of it . Regulation is key, as ChatGPT currently has unknown implications on the teaching and learning process and could thus be both advantageous and/or detrimental to learning;
  • Ensure teachers continue to supervise students: Last, and arguably most importantly, when using ChatGPT, particularly when it involves children, teachers need to be actively engaged in the teaching and learning process to ensure students use the technology responsibly and safely.

Keeping in mind the current and potential future shortages of teachers, it is likely that more than one policymaker will be tempted to replace teachers or tutors with this technology. Like preexisting technology, these chatbots have the potential to be used as a tool to support teachers but policymakers should proceed with caution . To better understand how this technology could be used to improve teaching and, ultimately, student learning, there needs to be an improved evidence base.

Dear readers,

This dates me, I guess, but I don’t like to leave the house without a physical book. It makes me very anxious to be stranded without reading material — what if I’m trapped in an elevator, or the bus hits traffic, or my friend is late? And while devices are a good backup, e-books just don’t bring the same sense of security. Even my smallest purses have to be capacious enough to hold a paperback.

Because I live in an apartment building with a lively lobby-book trade, when I’m between reads I often leave it to chance (or whichever neighbors are cleaning out their bookshelves) and pick something up on my way out the door. This might mean James Patterson on some days; on others, Kierkegaard. It’s added real depth to my reading life! Here are a couple of recent hits.

“I Hotel,” by Karen Tei Yamashita

Fiction, 2010

I’d been meaning to read “I Hotel” ever since Paul Yamazaki, the legendary buyer of San Francisco’s City Lights bookstore, recommended it in an interview. So you can imagine my excitement when it appeared on a lobby radiator last January: It was fate — or maybe that nice woman with the sweet terrier mix who lives on 4.

Mixing literary fiction, playwriting and graphic art, “I Hotel” is made up of a series of interconnected novellas set over 10 years in and around one real-life Chinatown hotel. Yamashita’s subject is the Asian American movement of the 1960s and ’70s, a moment of intense artistic and political blossoming. As San Francisco heaves with changes, the hotel resists gentrification even as it plays host to an-ever widening roster of characters and activists. There’s the philosophical postcard-collector who quotes Mao and Gertrude Stein, and the journalist for an alt weekly who’s covering the controversy over whether to declare Chinese New Year a holiday in local schools. We meet a Filipino American farm union worker and a Japanese American organizer working to transform a sweatshop. There are cameos from Oakland Black Panthers and Berkeley antiwar protestors. The Indians of All Tribes occupy Alcatraz; the war rages; there’s a pig-cooking contest; there are ghosts. It’s electrifying.

Lots of other blurb-ish words actually apply here — ambitious, sweeping, virtuosic, kaleidoscopic.This is certainly the Great San Francisco Novel. I’m angry for all the years I wasted not having read it and glad that maybe some of you will come to it as a result of my writing this now.

“The Custom of the Country,” by Edith Wharton

Fiction, 1913

I grabbed this out of desperation. I was running late; I knew I would finish my Ruth Rendell before the end of my train ride to Philadelphia; my only lobby options were a 2007 Fodor’s Guide to the Berkshires and this copy of “The Custom of the Country,” which someone seemed to have downloaded from the internet. Oh well, I thought. I haven’t read it since college, and even if it is printed in Noto Sans, Edith Wharton is better than nothing.

How had I forgotten how incredible this novel is? The story of an adventuress on the make, it’s one of Wharton’s most rollicking works: She’s as unflinching as ever, and as gimlet-eyed on the vagaries of high society, but it’s also clear how much fun she has portraying parvenu crassness. (Mental note: Pigeon-blood notepaper with white ink is totally declassé.) And in Undine Spragg, the small-town beauty determined to conquer New York, Wharton gives us one of her most remarkable creations. Undine is spoiled, willful, ruthless and vulgar, an amalgam of all Wharton’s Ugliest Americans. But even at her broadest, she remains a fully realized human. You love to hate her — at times it’s as though the author wonders exactly how monstrous she can render her, and keep you reading — and yet a part of you can’t help rooting for her, too.

Time and again, I found myself dog-earing or underlining lines whose wording could simply not have been better (an advantage of a copy this crummy is that you feel free to annotate without guilt). Take this passage, after Undine has thrown a tantrum: “That incident had left her half-ashamed, half-frightened of her behavior, and she had tried to atone for it by the indirect arts that were her nearest approach to acknowledging herself in the wrong.”

Judge a book by its cover? Last weekend, I stopped by the current exhibition at the Grolier Club: Book bindings from 1470-2020. But you don’t need to be in New York to see it; their programs are beautifully digitized .

Make your escape? There’s escapism, and then there’s “The Rome Affair,” by the British writer Karen Swan. You want glamour and romance in the Eternal City? She’s got you. How about some lurid family secrets, hidden passages, yachts, surly heroes, vintage gowns, missing jewels and identical twins? I often think how much duller my life would be had some anonymous benefactor not left this gateway Swan in my building’s lobby, introducing me to the Moët & Chandon Imperial Vintage 1946 of beach reads.

Self-actualize? One of my recent giveaway-table acquisitions is a blank notebook. Always useful, right? Except this notebook, titled “In My Humble Opinion,” is full of … abuse. On every page is some sour, misanthropic maxim: “Don’t overestimate the decency of the human race” (H.L. Mencken); “I don’t have pet peeves, I have whole kennels of irritation” (Whoopi Goldberg). I presume it’s intended for venting; I use it mostly for shopping lists. Today: ingredients for lentil soup; “Humanity is a pigsty, where liars, hypocrites and the obscene in spirit congregate.” (George Moore)
