Traditions Of New Year

One of the most common traditions on New Year's Day is the making of resolutions. Many people resolve to make positive changes in their lives, such as eating healthier, exercising more, or quitting a bad habit. For around 15 days, many Asian countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, and mainly China celebrate Spring Year, a.k.a New year. Because the first day of the new year signifies the end of the coldest part of winter and the beginning of the spring months, it is given the name "Spring Festival." It is observed at the beginning of the solar year, according to the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar, which also shows the moon phase.

The Lantern Festival, which is observed on the fifteenth day of the first calendar month and serves as the festival's culmination, is traditionally held on the eve of the first day of the Lunar New Year.

Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah, which translates to "Head of the Year," is when Jews around the world mark the beginning of the new year. Rosh Hashanah is seen as a time of celebration, reflection, and acknowledgement of the end of another year. On the first and second days of Tishrei, the seventh month in the Hebrew calendar, it is welcomed. Traditions associated with the occasion include eating foods like dates, leeks, beets, and pomegranates, as well as blowing the shofar, or ram's horn, at synagogues.

For Nowruz, which means a new day, at the beginning of spring, around 73 million people in Iran and 30 million people in Afghanistan celebrate the rebirth of nature for 13 days. It is one of the oldest holidays in history and is sometimes referred to as the Persian New Year. It has been observed for nearly 3,900 years.

Pahela Baishakh

In a state of India known as Bengal, people celebrate a festival called Pahela Baishakh (which roughly translates to ‘first month’) in the month of April. According to their calendar, it marks the start of their New Year. They celebrate it because, during this time, the harvesting season starts. To greet each other on New Year, people use the phrase “Shubho Noboborsha”, which roughly translates to “Happy New Year.”

How I Celebrated New Year?

As the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation for what the coming year would bring. I had spent the day preparing for the celebrations, decorating my home with sparkling streamers and festive balloons, and cooking up a storm in the kitchen.

As the countdown to midnight began, we all huddled together, eagerly waiting for the moment when the new year would arrive. When the final seconds ticked away, we erupted into cheers and hugs, ringing in the new year with a sense of hope and joy. I felt grateful to be surrounded by loved ones and was filled with a sense of optimism for what the coming year would bring.

As the night drew to a close and we said our goodbyes, I couldn't help but feel a sense of warmth and happiness, knowing that I had welcomed the new year in the best way possible – surrounded by the people I care about most.

1. The New Year: A Time for Reflection and a Time to Move Forward by Susanne Carlson

2. my new year’s resolution by francisco sáez, 3. my lonely new year’s eve party will consist of sadness, hope, and life-changing gratitude by dawn bevier, 4. the psychology of new years eve reflection by ben farrell, 5. why is new year’s eve so depressing by leila ettachfini, 1. what is the importance of new year’s resolutions, 2. different new year celebrations, 3. is new year a new beginning, 4. why some people find new year’s celebrations depressing, 5. are new year’s resolutions a waste of time.

“With reflection and attention to positive change, taking note of what we have learned on our journey up until now, can give us the opportunity to apply it to the future, to take with us what is helpful and to leave behind what is not.”

Carlson writes about the importance of reflection and learning from one’s mistakes for the new year ahead. She sees the new year as a time for new beginnings; she wants it to be the start of positive change for others, just as it has been for her. Reflection is essential, as it allows us to see what we can improve on and do better in the coming year.

“According to Goleman, the link between attention and excellence is behind almost all our achievements. Attention is needed not only to understand, learn or remember, but also to read the emotions of others, generate empathy and build good relationships. It is an asset that, despite being little known and despised, has great relevance in how we face life.”

Sáez briefly explains his new year’s resolution: to be more attentive. He wants to improve his attention and focus on forming better relationships with others, healthily using technology, and better his mental health. By reading the book Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence , he hopes to hone his attention for the new year and do better in the future. You might also be interested in these essays about celebration .

“And yes, I know this pandemic is not done with its destruction, but I also know we’re fighting back like hell and making progress. And that long-awaited day of celebration is now coming sooner rather than later. And when that day comes, I can’t help but believe that the world will be a better place. I know I will be a better person and millions of you will be as well.”

In this solemn piece, Bevier laments new year’s celebrations during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed millions. She is sad for those she has lost and the loss of the pre-pandemic life she loved. However, she hopes the next new year will not be like the last, and she has learned to be grateful for the more minor things in life. The pandemic has taught her a lot, but most importantly, to be optimistic for the future and to look ahead to the new year with hope, kindness, and gratitude.

“In reality, new years eve is no different to any other night of the year yet; we can’t help but assign some special meaning to the 31st of December. The psychological significance of the night can be a good thing, but it can also create tremendous anxiety for us.”

Farrell explains the psychological pressure of New Year’s Eve. This one night is no different from any other, but since it is the last one of the year, people feel the need to reflect not only on the day but the entire year. The imagery of big parties and “new beginnings” further add to the pressure, as people feel the need to have the “picture-perfect” new year. He says that while it can be helpful to use the beginning of the year as the start of positive change, it is more important to learn from one’s mistakes, no matter what time of the year.

“‘Anytime you let social convention dictate what you do rather than doing what feels best for you, you run the risk of anxiety, depression, and so on,’ says Dr. Kubiak. New Year’s Eve leaves this group with a tough choice: go out even though you really don’t want to or deal with the uncomfortable task of telling your friends that you’re going to sit this one out.”

Ettachfini explains new year’s eve from the perspective of those who get anxious or depressed during this time. Failure during the year, social anxiety, and the feeling of having to say goodbye to the year are all contributing factors. She cites information from Dr. Larry Kubiak, who says that depression and anxiety are normal, but it is essential to talk about them with a loved one to prevent their consuming of your life.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #1

As the calendar turns and a new year dawns upon us, it is a time of reflection, renewal, and the opportunity for personal growth. New Year’s resolutions have long been a tradition, allowing individuals to set intentions and goals for the coming year. For me, this tradition is not just a fleeting promise but a chance to embark on a journey of self-improvement.

One of my resolutions for the upcoming year is to prioritize my physical and mental well-being. In the fast-paced world we live in, it is easy to neglect self-care amidst the demands of daily life. By making a conscious effort to exercise regularly, eat nutritious meals, and practice mindfulness, I aim to cultivate a healthier lifestyle. Taking care of my physical and mental health will not only enhance my overall well-being but also provide me with the energy and resilience necessary to tackle life’s challenges.

Another resolution I have is to expand my knowledge and broaden my horizons. Learning should be a lifelong endeavor, and I believe that continuous education is key to personal growth. Whether it’s through reading books, attending seminars, or taking up new hobbies, I aspire to constantly seek knowledge, explore diverse perspectives, and embrace new opportunities for intellectual development. By doing so, I hope to nurture my curiosity, deepen my understanding of the world, and become a more well-rounded individual.

Additionally, I resolve to foster stronger connections with loved ones and build meaningful relationships. In today’s digital age, it is easy to get caught up in a virtual world, often overlooking the importance of genuine human connection. I want to invest time and effort in nurturing my relationships, engaging in meaningful conversations, and creating lasting memories with family and friends. By being present and actively listening, I hope to strengthen the bonds that enrich my life and bring joy to those around me.

In conclusion, the start of a new year holds immense potential for growth and positive change. Through my resolutions to prioritize my well-being, expand my knowledge, and foster stronger connections, I am committed to embracing personal development and striving for a more fulfilling life. While resolutions may not always be easy to achieve, I am determined to approach them with dedication, perseverance, and a mindset open to learning from both successes and setbacks. As I embark on this journey of self-improvement, I am excited about the possibilities that the new year holds and the person I can become through embracing growth and positive change.

Each day, I will strive to find something to be grateful for, whether it’s a simple pleasure or a significant achievement. By shifting my perspective to one of gratitude, I hope to nurture a positive outlook that permeates every aspect of my life.

Additionally, I am committed to prioritizing self-care and well-being. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to neglect our own needs. However, I believe that taking care of ourselves is not a luxury but a necessity. I will make a conscious effort to engage in activities that nourish my body, mind, and soul. This may include regular exercise, meditation, pursuing hobbies, or simply allowing myself time to rest and rejuvenate. By prioritizing self-care, I aim to create a solid foundation for overall well-being and resilience.

Furthermore, I aspire to embrace personal growth by stepping out of my comfort zone. Growth often occurs when we challenge ourselves and push beyond familiar boundaries. I will seek opportunities to learn and develop new skills, whether it’s taking on a new project at work, enrolling in a course, or engaging in meaningful conversations with people who possess different perspectives. By embracing discomfort and embracing the unknown, I believe I can unlock my full potential and continue evolving as an individual.

Lastly, I resolve to make a positive impact in the world around me. Small acts of kindness can create ripples of change that extend far beyond our immediate sphere. I will strive to contribute to my community through volunteering, supporting causes I care about, and spreading kindness wherever I go. By recognizing the power of my actions, no matter how small, I can be part of a collective effort to create a more compassionate and harmonious world.

In conclusion, New Year’s resolutions offer a pathway to personal transformation. Through cultivating gratitude, prioritizing self-care, embracing growth, and making a positive impact, I am committed to embarking on a journey of self-discovery and self-improvement. While the road may be challenging at times, I am determined to stay focused, resilient, and open to the opportunities that lie ahead. As the New Year unfolds, I am excited to see the person I can become and the positive changes I can bring to my own life and the world around me.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #3

As the New Year unfolds, I find myself reflecting on the past and envisioning a future filled with growth and self-improvement. This year, I am determined to prioritize balance and mindfulness in every aspect of my life through my New Year’s resolutions.

First and foremost, I resolve to achieve a healthier work-life balance. In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to become consumed by professional responsibilities, leaving little time for personal pursuits and relationships. I will set clear boundaries, carve out dedicated time for self-care, and strive to be fully present in my personal life. By nurturing a harmonious balance between work and leisure, I aim to enhance my overall well-being and cultivate stronger connections with loved ones.

Moreover, I am committed to practicing mindfulness in my daily life. Mindfulness is the art of being fully present and aware of the present moment, without judgment. I will incorporate mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and mindful eating into my routine. By cultivating a heightened sense of awareness and living in the present, I hope to reduce stress, increase focus, and find greater joy in the simple pleasures of life.

In addition, I resolve to prioritize self-reflection and personal growth. Regular self-reflection allows us to gain insights into our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, enabling us to make intentional choices. I will dedicate time for introspection, journaling, and setting personal goals. By embracing self-reflection, I can identify areas for improvement, celebrate achievements, and chart a course for personal growth and development.

Furthermore, I aspire to embrace sustainability and contribute to a healthier planet. I will adopt eco-friendly practices such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and supporting sustainable initiatives. By making conscious choices that minimize my ecological footprint, I can contribute to the preservation of our environment and inspire others to do the same.

Lastly, I resolve to foster a spirit of gratitude and kindness. Each day, I will make an effort to express gratitude for the blessings in my life and extend acts of kindness to others. Whether it’s through a simple smile, a heartfelt thank-you, or a charitable act, I believe that small gestures can have a profound impact on both the giver and the recipient.

In conclusion, my New Year’s resolutions revolve around embracing balance and mindfulness in all aspects of my life. By prioritizing work-life balance, practicing mindfulness, engaging in self-reflection, embracing sustainability, and fostering gratitude and kindness, I am committed to nurturing my well-being, personal growth, and contributing to a better world. As the New Year begins, I am excited to embark on this transformative journey, knowing that each step I take brings me closer to the balanced, mindful, and fulfilled life I aspire to lead.

Essay on New Year 22

Essay on New Year 2023 (1000+ Words)

The old year is ending, and a new beginning has arrived. People worldwide will be celebrating the arrival of the New Year. For some, the New Year means looking back at what has been accomplished, and for others, it means setting goals and making resolutions.

Some people believe that New Year’s Day is a time to reflect on all that has happened and to look forward to what is coming next.

One of the first things many people do in the new year is to make a list of resolutions. You might resolve to make more money, learn a second language, or become a better person. The most common resolution is to lose weight and get healthier.

However, it can be challenging to stick with these resolutions without support from family and friends. In this blog post, I will discuss some ways to help yourself and others as we enter into the New Year!

Essay on New Year

It’s the New Year! New Year traditions are generally based on old European pagan rituals. The idea of a ‘new year’ is thought to have come from the Roman practice of beginning the year at the first full moon after the winter solstice, or around January 1.

The New Year is a time for looking forward and making resolutions for your future. But it’s also a time to celebrate all that you’ve already accomplished in this past year. Reflect on what you’ve learned and share those lessons with others.

The start of a new year brings with it hope and anticipation. It’s the perfect time to start fresh by setting goals for yourself, reviewing your progress, and embarking on new adventures. Whether you want to make more money, improve your health, or explore the world in the coming year, there are endless possibilities out there waiting for you. But what are some resolutions that might be worth considering?

New Year Resolutions

Take the new year as an opportunity to get a fresh start. Letting go of a bad habit can improve your life immensely. A few simple changes can quickly improve your life.

Few things are worse than dealing with an upset stomach in the morning. Make an effort to eat healthy daily by adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet. It will not only make you feel better, but it can improve your performance at work.

Furthermore, meditation is a great way to reduce stress and improve your mental health. You can quickly get started by choosing a type of meditation suitable for you. Try a guided meditation that is designed specifically for you.

The Importance of Goals

Before embarking on a new adventure, it’s essential to reflect on what you’ve done and learned over the past year. You may be feeling that your life is stagnant and unsatisfying, but if you don’t look at how far you’ve come, how can you expect to go further?

The only way to grow as a person is to grow from your mistakes and learn from them. In the New Year, outline what you want to accomplish in the next 365 days. Write them down. Break them down into manageable tasks, and put them into a daily schedule.

Your life will begin to take shape in front of your eyes if you organize your life in a conducive way to your success. The same applies to your health.

Would you mind not following the joneses? It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparison.

The Importance of Planning

The moment we start procrastinating is the moment we begin to waste time. When was the last time you planned your week? Or what was the final task you completed?

In today’s fast-paced world, doing anything with a plan has become a lost art. But as with so many things in life, the moment you focus on the task at hand, not thinking about it, will be the key to success.

We all know that when we get things done, we feel better. Another vital resolution is to spend your time wisely. Many people believe that time is our most precious resource. But as someone once said, “you can’t get time back; you can only spend it.

Reviewing Your Progress

You’ve made so many mistakes in the past year, but have you ever thought about good things that happened? Sometimes we go through such hardship that we forget about the good things that come with it, so we need to take a step back and remember them.

Maybe it’s all of the amazing people you’ve met on your adventures. Perhaps it’s all the people who supported you or just congratulated you on reaching a big goal.

Maybe it’s getting a promotion at work that you were determined to make happen. You never know what amazing things are waiting for you, so reflect on what you’ve accomplished and focus on getting even more out of life.

Budgeting what many people fail to realize is that living well doesn’t just come naturally. Instead, it takes thought, preparation, and planning.

Exploring the World and Making Money

It is one of the top New Year’s resolutions for a reason. Who doesn’t want to travel the world, eat in a foreign restaurant, or experience something brand new and exciting every day?

When you choose to make money from your passion, the sky’s the limit. And you can do all of this even if you’re single and still living with your parents. Look into bartering, freelancing, selling stuff online, and even starting a blog that helps others make money from what they love.

Improving Your Health and Well-being

Don’t wait for the new year to improve your well-being. You can start now! Get moving, make some healthy choices, spend more time with friends and family, take walks outside, get a hobby—and give yourself a reason to be happy every day.

If you do decide to wait until January 1st, start by making a few small changes that can lead to some big improvements in your life.

We encourage you to have fun with your resolutions this year. If you have a good experience, you can try some more! After all, you don’t want to be one of those people who go to bed on December 31 and don’t resolve to do anything next year.

If you follow your resolutions , you should enjoy 2023. Have a great year!

New Year celebrations

New Year celebrations

On the night of 31 December and the morning of 1 January, people in many countries all over the world will celebrate the beginning of a new year. How will they celebrate and how did this tradition begin?

Do the preparation task first. Then read the article and do the exercises.

Preparation

Matching_MjMwMDQ=

'For last year's words belong to last year's language And next year's words await another voice. And to make an end is to make a beginning.' – TS Eliot

New year, old celebrations

There have been celebrations to mark the beginning of a new year for thousands of years. Sometimes these were simply an opportunity for people to eat, drink and have fun, but in some places the festivities were connected to the land or astronomical events. For example, in Egypt the beginning of the year coincided with when the River Nile flooded, and this normally happened when the star Sirius rose. The Persians and Phoenicians started their new year at the spring equinox (this is around 20 March when the Sun shines more or less directly on the equator and the length of the night and the day are almost the same).

The oldest celebration

The city of Babylon in ancient Mesopotamia was where the first New Year's celebrations were recorded about 4,000 years ago. The Babylonians held their celebrations on the first new moon after the spring equinox and called this festival Akitu (which comes from the word the Sumerians used for barley). Barley was cut in Mesopotamia in the spring, and during Akitu there was a different ritual on each of the 11 days that the celebration lasted. Statues of the gods were carried through the streets of the city, and in this way the Babylonians believed that their world had been cleaned to prepare for the new year and a new spring.

Modern celebrations

In many cities all over the world, spectacular fireworks displays take place as soon as the clock passes midnight on 31 December. In recent years, Sydney in Australia has been the host to one of the first of these celebrations as New Year arrives there before most other major international cities. The display takes place in Sydney Harbour, with the Opera House and Harbour Bridge making it a stunning setting. Fireworks light up the skies in hundreds of cities as 12 midnight strikes around the globe.

Traditions that live on

There are a number of strange and interesting New Year's traditions around the world. In Scotland, New Year's Eve is called Hogmanay and 'first footing' remains a popular custom with people visiting friends' and neighbours' houses just after midnight. The first person who visits your house should bring a gift as this will mean good luck. In Spain, it is the custom to eat 12 grapes as the bells sound for midnight on 31 December. One grape is eaten at each sound of the bell and each grape is supposed to bring good luck for each month of the year ahead. In Brazil, Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela and some other Central and South American countries, people wear special underwear of different colours on New Year's Eve. Red is supposed to be good for bringing love in the new year, while yellow is supposed to bring money.

Out with the old, in with the new

The new year is a perfect time to make a change for the better. The tradition of making New Year's resolutions is more common in the western hemisphere but also exists in the eastern hemisphere. This tradition involves a person making a commitment to change an unwanted habit or behaviour or setting a personal objective. Typical New Year's resolutions might be to give up smoking, eat healthier food, do more exercise, become more organised or laugh more – but really, a New Year's resolution can be almost anything. However, research suggests that many New Year's resolutions fail. Being realistic about the objectives you set and not making too many New Year's resolutions might help you to achieve success.

How do you celebrate the new year?

Language level

Hi, there! I am Cuban, though I Iive in Mexico since the 2000. In Cuba, people use to roast a whole pork in a stick that goes from the pork´s snout to its tail. They start preparing the pork and the fire early in the morning, so that it is ready for the midnight. They also cook white rice and black beans, and prepare tomato and lettuce salad. Of course, a good bottle of Aguardiente (Cuban rum) cannot be missed, or some drinks, especially the traditional Cuban Mojito. Besides, they fried green banana, known as “tostones”. The whole family meets, grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and all relatives. They dance Cuban salsa and sing. At midnight, they hold each other wishing the best for the New Year.

Best regards, María Laudelina.

Hi, This year, we did not have new year celebrations in our country due to the prevailing war in Palestine. This was to show solidarity with Palestinians. On the individual level, I went out in a cold chill night to have a dinner with my family. The traffic was blocked on popular points of people gathering. It was a night to be remembered always. In addition, I also made a new year resolution to achieve my goals at a faster pace so I could compensate the time I wasted in my life. Thanks

When there is opportunity, I used to spend New Year's Eve along with my aunts and cousins. They used to prepare a great variety of dishes, which are extremely delicious, but there is so many food that is probably to get some stomach ache. I like these celebration as it is a moment to appreciate the present and get prepared for a new beginning.

How do you celebrate the new year? For me, it's like a normal day.I don't do anything extra than other days. As you mentioned, the people usually make resolutions on this occasion but mostly get failed in making that happen, i also used to do the same thing till two years back. What i have concluded as a human from human life is that it becomes better with an increase in the cruelty on other species. These words are coming here from own experience so, don't get offended after going through this if yours don't match with these. Signing off on behalf of myself:)

A few days before new year's eve, my family and I go to buy fireworks to make the celebrations more remarkable. My family has numerous members, we gather to eat, sing, play, and enjoy the fireworks. and the coincidence that day is also my birthday, so it's an unforgettable day.

How do you celebrate the new year? I celebrate NewYear with my family. generally, we eat and dance together for the whole night we decided about new planning for this year. I always do differently taking my decision.

Me and lots of people in my country celebrate new year by spending time with loved ones. By doing so we improve our friendship and family connects. At new year celebrations like everybody classically we wish health happiness peace and of course money. We play games, drinking and eating. Also at some celebrations if the hotels aren't full or not too expensive we would be on holiday during new year. By the way happy new year to everybody

We celebrate by eating, drinking, big company often, but this year we been with my husband and our baby. Looking fireworks outside in the garden. We pray for health and better New Year

As the new year has come, I have made some commitments too. I do not know if I will be able to accomplish them, but I think it is important to desire changes in our life. They could be big changes, utopian changes, doesn't matter. We shouldn't refrain from the desire of having new happy times in our existences.

My new year eve is not special like usual. The last two years was tough, so there are nothing to celebrate about. However, I am still hoping that gonna be better this year with the new opportunities come along but also the challenges. No matter what, I will try the best to get things done nicely and wish for a brighter future. My new year resolution is quite simple which is do more exercises and spending more time for the most important things. Be cool and happy new year all!

New Year Speech for Students in English

Hey there, amazing students and teachers! As we stand on the threshold of a brand new year, let's take a moment to explore the magic of New Year's and understand why it's such a big deal. Buckle up for a journey into the world of celebrations, hope, and exciting beginnings!

What's the Buzz about New Year's?

First things first, what on Earth is New Year's, and why do we go all out to celebrate it? Well, imagine it's like hitting the reset button on a giant clock. New Year's is the moment when we say goodbye to the old year and welcome a brand new one. It's like having a birthday for the entire world!

But why January 1st, you might ask? That date has been chosen for centuries, going back to ancient times. The Romans dedicated this day to Janus, the god of beginnings, transitions, and doors. Janus had two faces – one looking back at the past and another gazing into the future. So, when we celebrate New Year's, we're a bit like Janus, reflecting on what's gone by in the past and looking ahead to the exciting adventures waiting for us in the future.

Why do we Celebrate?

Celebrating New Year's isn't just about throwing confetti and watching fireworks (although those are super fun!). It's a time to appreciate the journey we've been on, the lessons we've learned, and the friendships we've made. It's like a giant 'Well done!' for making it through another year, with all its ups and downs.

Think of New Year's as a giant pat on the back for all the hard work, growth, and achievements – big or small. It's a chance to acknowledge the awesome things we've accomplished and to set the stage for even more awesomeness in the year to come.

The Significance of New Year's for Us

Now, why is New Year's so significant for us? Well, besides being a fantastic excuse to party, it's a symbol of hope and fresh starts. Imagine you have a notebook, and each year is a new page waiting to be filled with your adventures, dreams, and accomplishments.

New Year's is the moment when we get to decide what we want to write on that fresh page. It's a chance to think about the kind of person we want to be, the goals we want to achieve, and the fun we want to have. It's like having a superpower – the power to shape our own story!

Interesting Facts about New Year’s

Okay, let's hear some mind-blowing facts about New Year's to make it even more interesting:

1. The First New Year's Celebrations: The ancient Babylonians were some of the first people to celebrate New Year's over 4,000 years ago. They even had resolutions, promising to repay debts and return borrowed stuff. Sound familiar?

2. Time Zones and Celebrations: Did you know that New Year's is celebrated at different times around the world? Thanks to time zones, people in Sydney, Australia, are among the first to shout "Happy New Year!" while folks in New York City get to celebrate a bit later.

3. Making Noise to Ward Off Evil: Ever wonder why we make so much noise at midnight? Well, ancient cultures believed that loud noises scared away evil spirits. So, go ahead, bang those pots and pans – it's for a good cause!

In a nutshell, New Year's is like a giant, global birthday party for the whole planet. It's a time to celebrate, reflect, and dream big. So, as we countdown to the stroke of midnight, let's embrace the excitement, set some awesome goals, and get ready for the fantastic journey that is 2024!

Happy New Year, my fellow students! May your year be filled with laughter, growth, and unforgettable adventures. Here's to you and the amazing story you're about to write on the blank pages of the coming year. Cheers!

As we stand on the edge of a brand new year, let's talk about something exciting – New Year's resolutions! Now, I know resolutions might sound like a big, grown-up word, but trust me, it's all about making awesome promises to ourselves.

This year, let's make resolutions that are like secret superpowers. Imagine if your superpower was kindness – spreading smiles like confetti and making everyone feel special. Or, what if your superpower was curiosity – unlocking the mysteries of the world one question at a time?

So, here's the deal: think about something you want to get better at or try for the first time. Maybe it's reading more books, being a great friend, or learning a funky dance move. Your resolution is like a cool quest, and every little step you take gets you closer to being the superhero version of yourself.

But here's the super-secret trick – resolutions aren't about being perfect. Nope, they're about trying, learning, and having fun along the way. If you stumble, no worries – superheroes stumble too. What matters is getting back up and giving it another go.

As we dive into this new year, let's unleash our inner superheroes together. Let kindness, curiosity, and all our fantastic resolutions light up our days. Here's to a year of exciting adventures, epic discoveries, and becoming the most awesome versions of ourselves. Happy New Year, superheroes in the making!

Nowruz – Persian New Year

By: History.com Editors

Published: March 19, 2024

An Iranian girl buys bean sprouts on the occasion of Norooz, the Iranian new year, in Tehran, March 2000.

Nowruz is a holiday marking the Persian New Year and the first day of spring. Originating more than 3,000 years ago, the 13-day festival symbolizes renewal and harmony with nature. It begins at the exact moment of the Northern Hemisphere’s vernal equinox , typically between March 19 and 22.

This secular event is recognized by UNESCO , and the United Nations designated March 21 as the International Day of Nowruz . The holiday’s spellings , which also include Norouz, Navruz, Nooruz, No-Ruz and Nauryz, vary depending on the language.

“In these times of great challenge, Nowruz promotes dialogue, good neighborliness and reconciliation,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated.

Origins and Background

Rooted in Zoroastrianism , an ancient monotheistic religion, Nowruz festivities are celebrated in countries with significant Persian cultural influence, including Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey and Kazakhstan.

Historical accounts suggest that Nowruz celebrations occurred in ancient Persepolis during the Achaemenid Empire (550-330 B.C.). Mythology centered on its inception includes tales of a Persian king soaring across the skies in a jeweled chariot on the first day of spring.

Across regions, events during Nowruz, which translates to “new day” in English, vary according to customs, but they share common themes of rebirth, new beginnings and the celebration of nature.

“Nowruz has a lot of symbolism around renewal—renewal of nature, renewal of relationships,” Shadi Mokharti, a professor at American University in Washington, D.C., tells the School of International Service . “It is usually the highlight of the year for most Iranians.”

Traditions and Customs

To symbolize the new year's fresh start, celebrants often engage in spring cleaning, or “khaneh tekani,” gift exchanges, family gatherings, buying new clothes and more. Children often enjoy a break from school during this time.

“All houses undergo a big cleaning,” Zohreh Mirsharif, a world languages and cultures professor at American University, adds. “People will change the colors of the walls; they will wash everything. This is the new beginning.”

One common pre-festival ritual involves leaping over fire and streams to cleanse the past year’s negativity. “Many households also replenish their water supplies on the last Wednesday of the year,” UNESCO notes .

7 Items on the Haft-Sin Table

Another notable Iranian tradition is the gathering of families around the ceremonial Half-Sin table, which displays seven items beginning with the Persian letter “sin,” each holding special symbolism. The table includes apples (seeb) for beauty, garlic (seer) for health, vinegar (serkeh) for patience, hyacinth (sonbol) for spring, sweet pudding (samanu) for fertility, sprouts (sabzeh) for rebirth and coins (sekeh) for wealth.

On the 13th day of Nowruz, some countries observe sizdah bedar, a custom that involves picnicking outside to ward off bad luck. “Since the 13th is an unlucky day, entire families go on picnics and take with them the sprouts (sabzeh) from the haftseen table,” NPR reports .

The sprouts, or sabzeh, is wheat, barley, lentil or other sprout grown in a pot. It’s believed that the sabzeh absorbs the previous year's pain and trouble and throwing it into water at the end of the festival symbolizes a letting go of those misfortunes with the new year.

In Afghanistan, a date-based dessert called haft mewa is served, and buzkashi, a polo-like sport played with a goat carcass as a ball, is played. In Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, revelers share a sweet dish called sumalak from communal pots.

“What to Know About Nowruz, a 3,000-Year-Old Festival Celebrated by Millions Worldwide,” Time “International Nowruz Day, 21 March,” United Nations “Nowruz, A gathering of people with a common heritage along the Silk Roads,” UNESCO “Nowruz: Persian New Year's Table Celebrates Spring Deliciously,” NPR “Happy Nowruz! Five Facts About the Persian New Year,” American University

Cosmo Jarvis (with rope) as John Blackthorne with cast members in Shōgun

Shōgun: why the English samurai’s life and legacy still grip Japan 400 years on

Epic new TV adaptation of the 1975 novel reignites interest in the exploits of the Kent sailor William Adams

O n a backstreet in the Nihonbashi district of Tokyo, between a seafood wholesaler and a jewellery shop, stands a simple monument. It marks the former site, the inscription reads, of the home of William Adams, the first English person to reach Japan , and the inspiration for one of the standout TV series of this year.

Though it says Adams rendered “valuable services in foreign affairs”, the memorial is a strangely inconspicuous tribute to a man who, more than 400 years after his death, remains an unbreakable thread running through Anglo-Japanese relations, and whose on-screen portrayal continues to trigger debate.

The release this month of the Disney+ series Shōgun has reignited interest in the navigator from Kent whose talents were endless: shipbuilding, gunnery, mathematics, geography, trade negotiation and diplomacy, and, most notable of all, personal skills that saw him become friend and trusted adviser to the feudal warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Born in Gillingham in 1564, Adams was the sole Englishman aboard Dutch merchant ship De Liefde when it drifted into Usuki Bay in south-west Japan in April 1600. Adams and 23 Dutchmen were the only survivors of a fleet of five ships and 500 men that had set out from Rotterdam almost two years earlier. Of the 23, only nine, Adams among them, were strong enough to disembark.

Locally based Jesuit missionaries tried to have Adams executed for piracy, but he avoided that fate and went on to become Japan’s first foreign samurai, forging a link between that distant, mysterious archipelago and the homeland he would never see again. His story has inspired a bestselling novel – James Clavell’s classic 1975 work Shōgun , with Adams’s name changed to John Blackthorne – and a 1980 miniseries starring Richard Chamberlain.

Hiroyuki Sanada as warlord Yoshii Toranaga in armour on horseback

Those earlier retellings of Adams’s extraordinary rise through the hierarchy of a warring Japan largely isolated from the rest of the world have fascinated generations of readers and viewers. But their creators have also been accused – unfairly for some – of perpetuating the stereotypes that informed other tales of foreign encounters with Japan, including The Last Samurai and Lost In Translation .

The launch of the 10-part series has triggered a conversation about what, in an age of cultural strife, the story of the “blue-eyed samurai” can teach us about assimilation and respect.

Starring Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada as warlord Yoshii Toranaga, Cosmo Jarvis as John Blackthorne and Anna Sawai as Lady Toda Mariko, the drama has won positive reviews for its Japanese cast, meticulous production and its creators’ attempt to accurately portray the unspeakable violence and cultural refinement of 17th-century Japan.

“They have taken great care over that,” said film and TV critic Yuki Saruwatari. “Some have compared it to Game of Thrones , and I think they’re right. It contains shocking violence, death, betrayal, manipulation…”

But its depiction of the navigator has divided members of the William Adams Club , formed in Tokyo in 2015 by fans of Adams and his role in Anglo-Japanese relations.

Member and Japan resident Chris Wells said the first episode had left him fuming. “It is damaging to the memory of William Adams,” he said, adding that he was not the only member of the club to feel let down.

In his account of his arrival in Usuki, in modern-day Oita prefecture, Adams tells of the kindness he and other crew members were shown by local people, but in the TV series, their arrival is the catalyst for a violent confrontation.

An illustration from 1915 showing William Adams advising the Shōgun on ship design

“I find the first episode really insulting to the Japanese,” Wells said. “The people of Usuki took those sailors off that boat and nursed them back to health. It’s a typical Hollywood representation of the Japanese people.”

Adams would eventually be known in his adopted home as Miura Anjin – combining the name of the peninsula near Tokyo where he was awarded an estate and the Japanese word for pilot. In 2020, on the 400th anniversary of his death, the William Adams Club unveiled a sculpture of their hero in the grounds of the British embassy, three years after his remains were discovered in Hirado, Nagasaki prefecture.

Japanese schoolchildren learn about Miura Anjin’s exploits and his role in connecting two island nations at opposite ends of the world.

“His must be one of the great examples of assimilation into the highest reaches of a foreign culture,” said Hiromi Rogers, author of Anjin: The Life and Times of Samurai William Adams . “There is the scale of his ascent in Japanese society … from wretched prisoner condemned to crucifixion, to adviser to the Shōgun and high-ranking hatamoto samurai with an estate and 90 servants.

“Nothing like that has happened since, certainly in Japan, which is not the easiest of cultures into which to assimilate.”

So can modern-day migrants to Japan – particularly those from an increasingly insular, post-Brexit Britain – learn anything from Adams?

“I think he recognised that Japanese and British culture had much in common,” said Giles Milton, author of Samurai William: The Adventurer Who Unlocked Japan .

“Both countries are islands. Both are inherently conservative, have an ingrained hierarchical structure and an interest in international trade. Adams showed great interest in and respect for Japanese society. This endeared him to the local population and enabled him to survive, and thrive, in Japan,” Milton said.

While they debate the merits of the Disney+ drama, members of the William Adams Club are united in their mission to set up a more prominent tribute to Adams on the site of his Nihonbashi home in recognition of his role in shaping a Japan that viewed the world with a combination of suspicion and intrigue.

“Adams was far from home with no way of getting back,” said Prof Thomas Lockley of Nihon University College of Law in Tokyo and author of forthcoming book A Gentleman from Japan , about the first Japanese visitor to England, in 1588.

“You can either put yourself in a bad position and die, or meld into the world around you and make yourself useful … and that’s what Adams did.”

Adams, perhaps through necessity at first, went completely native, marrying the daughter of a Japanese official and going on to have two children, although he made arrangements to divide his considerable wealth between his families in Japan and England.

“He naturalised as a Japanese citizen,” Lockley said, “and I would say that he was part of the reason I decided to do the same. In that sense, I see him as my spiritual ancestor.”

Three millenniums ago, a small, prosperous farming community briefly flourished in the freshwater marshes of eastern England. The inhabitants lived in a clutch of thatched roundhouses built on wooden stilts above a channel of the River Nene, which empties into the North Sea. They wore clothes of fine flax linen, with pleats and tasseled hems; bartered for glass and amber beads imported from places as far-flung as present-day Iran; drank from delicate clay poppyhead cups; dined on leg of boar and honey-glazed venison, and fed table scraps to their dogs.

Within a year of its construction, this prehistoric idyll met a dramatic end. A catastrophic fire tore through the compound; the buildings collapsed and the villagers fled, abandoning their garments, tools and weapons. Everything, including the porridge left in cooking pots, crashed through the burning wicker floors into the thick, sticky reed beds below and stayed there. Eventually, the objects sank, hidden and entombed, in more than six feet of oozing peat and silt. The river gradually moved course away from the encampment, but the debris remained intact for nearly 3,000 years, preserving a record of daily life at the end of Britain’s Bronze Age, from 2500 B.C. to 800 B.C.

That frozen moment in time is the subject of two monographs published Tuesday by Cambridge University. Based on a 10-month excavation of what is now known as Must Farm Quarry, a submerged and superbly preserved settlement in the shadow of a potato-chip factory 75 miles north of London, the studies are as detailed as a forensic investigation report of a crime scene. One paper, a site synthesis, runs to 323 pages; the other, for specialists, is nearly 1,000 pages longer.

“This didn’t feel like archaeology,” said Mark Knight, the project director and one of the paper’s authors. “At times, excavating the site felt slightly rude and intrusive, as if we had turned up after a tragedy, picked through someone’s possessions and got a glimpse of what they did one day in 850 B.C.”

Evidence for life in Britain’s Bronze Age has traditionally come from fortified and religious sites that are often found on high, dry landscapes. Most of the clues come as pottery, flint tools and bones. “Generally we have to work with small bits and pieces and barely visible remains of houses, and read between the lines,” said Harry Fokkens, an archaeologist at Leiden University. Convincing anyone that such places were once thriving settlements takes a little imagination.

Paul Pettitt, a Paleolithic archaeologist at Durham University who was not involved with the new studies, said the monograph — a case study of exceptional preservation combined with highly skilled excavation — provide a reminder that domesticity in that period was “colorful, rich, varied and not solely about metal weapons, as the public’s love of metal detecting would suggest.”

Bogged Down

Francis Pryor, a British archaeologist best known for his 1982 discovery of Flag Fen, a Bronze Age site one mile from Must Farm, added: “The Must Farm report is transforming our understanding of British society in the millennium before the Roman Conquest, 2,000 years ago. Far from being primitive, Bronze Age communities lived in harmony with their neighbors, while enjoying life in warm, dry houses with excellent food.”

Until a decade ago, the so-called Pompeii of the Fen lay buried in a clay brick quarry. The original hamlet is believed to have been twice as big — mining in the 20th century obliterated half the archaeological site — and may have housed several dozen people in family units.

What remained were four substantial roundhouses and a small, square entranceway structure erected on a wooden platform and surrounded by a six-foot-high palisade of sharpened ash posts, a barrier no doubt designed for defense. The green timber, fresh wood chips and the absence of repair, rebuilding or insect damage suggested that the complex was relatively new at the time of the blaze.

An analysis of the outermost growth rings of the scorched hardwood pointed to late autumn or early winter as the start date, while the skeletons of three- to six-month-old lambs and the charred larvae of a local species of flea beetle implied that the settlement was destroyed in summer or early autumn.

By piecing together the material culture of these ancient Britons, the study reveals how the houses were constructed and the household goods within, what the residents ate and how their clothes were made.

Among other things, the archaeologists unearthed 180 textiles and fiber items (yarns, cloth, knotted nets), 160 wooden artifacts (bobbins, benches, hafts for metal tools and wheels), 120 pottery vessels (bowls, jars, jugs) and 90 pieces of metalwork (sickles, axes, chisels, a dagger, a hand-held razor for cutting hair). Masses of beads that had formed part of an elaborate necklace indicated a level of sophistication seldom associated with Bronze Age England.

“What’s interesting about this is that it’s an inventory of five Bronze Age households,” Mr. Knight said. “It was like each one had a wedding list for an upmarket department store.”

Although the bones of fish, cattle, sheep and pig were pulled out of the middens (halos of garbage dumped from the huts above), there was no evidence of human casualties. A young woman’s skull turned up outside a dwelling, but because it had been polished by repeated touch, the researchers decided that it was more likely a keepsake or a ritual decoration than a battle trophy. “Auntie’s skull tacked over the front door,” Mr. Knight speculated.

Mosquitoes and Cold Porridge

Interest in Must Farm was first aroused in 1999 when a Cambridge University archaeologist spied a series of oak posts poking out of the beds of clay at the quarry. Dendrochronology dated the poles to prehistory, and excitement grew when preliminary digs unearthed fish traps, bronze swords and spearheads.

The discovery of nine log boats — dugout canoes as long as 28 feet — buried in the muck hinted at the vast wetlands that once blanketed the region. “Boat journeys through reed swamps to the woodlands would have been made many times during the site’s short life,” said Chris Wakefield, the project archaeologist. “In summer, that meant traversing clouds of mosquitoes.”

A large-scale investigation conducted by Cambridge University in 2015 and 2016 exposed the palisade fence, lightweight walkways, the ruins of a roundhouse roof and walls made of woven willow branches called wattle. The way the timbers fell — some vertically, others in eerie, geometric lines — enabled the researchers to map the layout of the circular architecture. One house featured roughly 500 square feet of floor space and seemed to have distinct “activity zones” comparable to rooms in a modern home.

The thatched roofs had three tiers. The base layer of insulating straw was topped by turves — soil formed of dead but not fully decayed plants — and finished with clay, which near the apex of the roof may have formed a chimney or flue. “The people were confident and accomplished homebuilders,” Mr. Knight said. “They had a blueprint that worked beautifully for a drowned landscape.”

Stored in what was presumably the kitchen of one residence were bronze knives, wooden platters and clay pots, some of which were even nested. “There was a simple aesthetic at work that felt coherent and unified,” Mr. Knight said. A clay bowl bearing the fingerprints of its maker still held its final meal: a wheat-grain porridge mixed with animal fat, possibly from a goat or a red deer. A spatula rested against the inside of the dish.

The craftsmanship of the recovered relics and the presence of log boats, perhaps the only reliable means of transport, led researchers to conclude that, rather than an isolated outpost, the site may have been a bustling crossroads for trade. “There was a sense that these early fen folk were at the high end of their society and had access to anything available at that time,” Mr. Knight said. “At the end of the Bronze Age, the rivers of eastern England were the place to be for trade and connections; sites like Stonehenge were now at the periphery.”

Tale of the Tapeworm

The Must Farm community harvested crops and felled trees on the closest dry land. Sheep and cattle grazed there, too. Boar and deer were hunted in the local woodlands — within a two-mile radius of the homestead, the researchers reckon. “The irony is that the community wanted to live on water yet their economy was terrestrial,” Mr. Knight said.

Evidently, food was so abundant that the villagers all but ignored the fish, eels and water fowl swimming around the foundations of the settlement. With good reason, it turns out: Sanitation was an iffy proposition in the fenlands. Sausage-shaped globs found in the settlement’s murky sediment turned out to be fossils of dog and human feces, many flush with eggs from fish tapeworms and giant kidney worms acquired from foraging in the stagnant waterways. The tapeworms are flat, ribbonlike parasites that coil around the intestines of people and can grow to a length of 30 feet. The kidney worms stop at three feet but can destroy vital organs.

Two questions were left unanswered by the otherwise exhaustive Cambridge monographs: Was the blaze the result of an accident, or of an attack by rivals who may have envied the residents’ wealth? And why didn’t any Bronze Agers bother to retrieve all that soggy stuff?

“A settlement like this would have had a shelf life of maybe a generation, and the people who built it had clearly constructed similar sites before,” said David Gibson, a Cambridge archaeologist who collaborated on the study. “It may be that after the fire, they simply started again.”
