BMI Report Examines Book Printing in 2024

The Book Manufacturers Institute’s annual state of the industry report sees book manufacturing returning to a more normal business pattern in 2024 after four turbulent pandemic years, albeit with some caveats. The biggest question for 2024 is how the industry will react as publishers finally shed their excess inventory and printers use up the last of the large amounts of paper they bought to meet the demands of what turned out to be the over-publishing of books of the last couple of years.

Other factors to watch in the book manufacturing space include the rate of adoption of digital printing by publishers, the renewed threat of more offshoring of printing by publishers, and the ongoing challenge of attracting and retaining employees, the report found.

The report, written by NAPCO Research, stressed the importance of new technological developments that will make printing more efficient in the years ahead. “Digital printing technology, and inkjet in particular, continues to gain adoption in the book segment, being used alongside offset printing as a way to cost-effectively produce shorter runs of books,” the report found. “Given the excess inventory problems the industry faced in recent years, digital printing provides an option for printing books in the quantities needed, at the time they are needed. This technology can also help book manufacturers print and distribute closer geographically to their customers and avoid potential shipping delays of large volumes of offset printed books coming from overseas.”

The report quotes Midland Paper’s Bill Rojack as seeing signs of a return to more normal business. “As I look at each [publishing] segment, there’s a lot of hope that we’re going to rebalance and come back to some sort of normal in 2024,” Rojack said. “Activity definitely picked up in Q4 2023. I’d say activity is still better now than it has been, certainly in year-over-year comparison. Typically, Q1 in the trade space is quiet and I see that activity is actually better now than it usually is.”

However, Ashley Gordon, publishing market development manager for HP, said that publisher behavior is shifting, and she told the report authors that manufacturers will likely have to get used to sharing their customers with the competition. Given the uncertainties of the supply chain, Gordon predicted that publishers will want to print books close to the specific geographies where they expect to distribute those books, a strategy that she believes presents opportunities for domestic printers, “including smaller printers that can now compete for business with larger publishers that previously would have only worked with large print service providers." She qualified this prediction by saying that "printers gaining new business due to their ability to quickly produce and deliver short runs should not take any influx of work for granted.” She also warned that “while opportunity has emerged for printers to insource new business, it is also likely that they may lose some work as publishers diversify their geographic production positions.”

The report also recommends that the printing industry keep up with environmental and sustainability efforts both in Europe—where standards are higher than in North America—and in states like California and New York, which tend to be at the forefront of environmental legislation and regulations. Printers, the report notes, should work to shed the impression that book manufacturing is a dirty business if it wants to stay relevant in the future.

Bill Belichick’s NFL media plans for 2024: ‘Manningcast,’ a book deal and possibly a podcast

The famously concise Bill Belichick is about to become Mr. Media.

In his transition from the sidelines, Belichick , the longtime New England Patriots coach, will make millions with an anticipated recurring role with the Manning brothers on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli,” a book deal, a potential inside football show and possibly a podcast, executives briefed on his plans told The Athletic .

Belichick will start his post-Patriots career on Thursday with the NFL Draft, when he will join “The Pat McAfee Show” as an analyst. McAfee said publicly in February he would like to have Belichick on his show once a week during the season, so expanding his role with McAfee after Thursday also seems conceivable. Most of McAfee’s three-hour show is also on ESPN.

As Belichick’s full plans come into focus, the exact amount he will make is unknown, but it will be well into the millions, according to those briefed on his current and anticipated deals. His book deal advance is expected to be well into the seven figures, according to media executives and publishing sources briefed on his negotiations.

After ending his nearly quarter-century run in New England with six Super Bowl rings, the 72-year-old Belichick has been a sought-after media personality. He has made it clear in meetings with network executives that he didn’t want a regular weekly desk job on any of the NFL preview shows.

What's next for Bill Belichick? Broadcasting would be a natural — and lucrative — fit

While a deal with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions is not yet fully agreed upon, it is moving in that direction. The “Manningcast” was on ESPN’s networks for 10 of the network’s 25 games last season.

Belichick would not be on for every game but would appear pretty regularly during the season, which would be a new wrinkle for the show. In its first three years, guests appeared once during a season. This would be an audible for Omaha, as it would set segments to hear Belichick with the Mannings on multiple games.

The Manning-Belichick arrangement has added intrigue because of the longtime on-field rivalry between the Mannings and Tom Brady , who had the bulk of his success under Belichick’s tutelage in New England.

The Athletic first reported in early March that Manning was pursuing Belichick for a role with his company. Last week, ESPN said that Belichick is expected to sign a deal with Omaha Productions, but did not specify a role. Omaha Productions partly serves as an arm of ESPN.

Intriguingly, Belichick could also be part of an undetermined football show with Omaha. Belichick has discussed starting a podcast with different platforms. In late March, The Athletic reported that Belichick is writing a book , which ESPN later said would focus on leadership.

It is apparent Belichick wants to lead again and return to coaching. His 333 all-time NFL head coaching victories put him just 14 behind Don Shula. A year from now, he could be back on the sidelines. In the meantime, Belichick is about to become Mr. Media, starting during Thursday’s draft with McAfee on ESPN+, YouTube and TikTok.

The Scouting Report on Dolphins First-Round Pick Chop Robinson

The book on the Penn State edge defender's strengths and shortcomings

After a wild first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins stood firm at number 21 and selected Penn State edge rusher Chop Robinson.

Robinson actually was mock-drafted to the Dolphins by Good Morning Football Co-Host Peter Schrager in his final version Thursday morning. However, he had Miami moving to pick 29 to select him. Regardless, Miami general manager Chris Grier sent the ticket in with Robinson’s name on it.

Looking through scouting reports around media outlets, there is potential for Robinson to grow into an impact player. At 6-3, 254, Robinson was compared to Micah Parsons by NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein.

“Edge defender who offers the type of elite athleticism we’ve seen from players like Micah Parsons and Myles Garrett," Zierlein wrote. "Robinson might not be as fast as Parsons, but he’s close.”

Robinson ran a 4.48 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, which was second to Dallas Turner among edge rushers.

NFL.com pointed out some strengths included “rare explosiveness and speed to overwhelm blockers across from him.”

NFLDraftBuzz.com raves about his pass-rushing skills. “His capability to outmaneuver offensive tackles with his burst and flexibility makes him a formidable pass-rushing prospect.”

The scouting site adds, “Robinson’s high motor and athletic base suggest he could make an immediate impact in the NFL.”

Adding he has a “volcanic first step and long-stride explosiveness that immediately puts offensive linemen at a disadvantage.”

Keith Sanchez of The Draft Network says in his scouting report, “Chop Robinson showcases an explosive first step that sets the stage for him to develop into a dominant pass rusher on the next level.”

While there are plenty of positives, Robinson could refine his technique and arsenal of pass-rushing moves, as Sanchez identified he needs to “improve pass rush repertoire/counter moves.”

NFL.com had a similar critique: “Needs to work on technique and hand usage for block take-ons.

An NFC scout said of Robinson following the Combine, “I get the comparison to Micah Parsons, but I think Parsons was a little more polished as a football player when he came out. Chop is still a little green.”

Robinson was a Third team Associated Press All-American as well as First-team All-Big Ten. He tallied four sacks in 2023 for the Nittany Lions.

Robinson joins Dolphins edge rushers Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb and free agent acquisition Shaq Barrett. Robinson should see immediate opportunity for the Dolphins as both Phillips and Chubb return from their respective injuries.
