Responding to what you read is an important literacy skill. Reading about other people’s experiences and perspectives helps kids learn about the world. And although students don’t need to dive deeply into every single book they read, occasionally digging into characters, settings, and themes can help them learn to look beyond the prose. Here are 42 creative book report ideas designed to make reading more meaningful.

1. Concrete Found Poem

This clever activity is basically a shape poem made up of words, phrases, and whole sentences found in the books students read. The words come together to create an image that represents something from the story.

2. Graphic Novel

Have students rewrite the book they are reading, or a chapter of their book, as a graphic novel. Set parameters for the assignment such as including six scenes from the story, three characters, details about the setting, etc. And, of course, include detailed illustrations to accompany the story.

Fill the bag with the paragraphs of a book report, each written on their own paper in fun shapes. 

Reach your hand into the bag and pull out the info on the book!

Ask a local pizza company to donate some unused boxes. 

Create paper book report pizzas that tell about the book on each slice. 

Decorate the inside lid of the pizza box like a project board advertising your book.

Cover Design Book Report

Create a new dust jacket for the book. 

How would you illustrate it? 

What content would you put on the back to entice the reader to buy the book?

These projects are unique in shape, but simple in supplies!

I have often found a book report idea that I really liked in a teacher resource book or on a website. Unfortunately, these book report projects involved purchasing a lot of additional items and driving around after school hours to find art supplies. This is not fun to do after a long day in the classroom!

My book report projects are unique in shape, but simple in supplies!

After you have printed out the unique book report templates, the only materials that you will need to have in your classroom to complete these book report projects are scissors, glue, tape, and coloring pencils.

You will not need to go shopping after school for art supplies  and materials to complete these fun book report projects.

A teacher's time is valuable, so all of my book report projects include a 5 page bulletin board display banner . I hope that these display banners help save you time in decorating your classroom bulletin board displays that feature your students' book report projects.

The majority of my book report projects also contain thematic bulletin board accent pieces. You can use these accent pieces to add the finishing touches to your bulletin board displays so that they are colorful and eye catching!

All of my book report projects include the following components:

• assembling directions
• first draft writing worksheets (the writing lines on the first draft worksheets match exactly with the writing lines on the final draft templates)
• final draft project templates
• color final draft project templates of the project for you to use as a finished example to show to your students
• grading rubric for both the students and the teacher to fill out
• five page color banner to display on your bulletin board

What is a book report.

That term is used pretty loosely. Some people mean a detailed synopsis. Others want an in-depth analysis on one or more literary devices. Some people actually mean a critic's review of the book. There are even those who want EVERYTHING. Storyboard That wants to bring all of the different kinds of book reports together in a much more engaging medium. Make that dreaded book report something fun with different types of projects! Incorporate student choice and let your students pick the way they want to create a report on a book!

Writing a Synopsis

The basis for understanding any piece of literature is to know what is going on. Being able to retell or summarize a story is especially important for students in the younger grades to make sure they can comprehend what they are reading. However, there are very complex plots and subplots in many pieces of high school literature as well, and a synopsis can be highly useful for discussing and understanding the structure of the story.
