Common Assignments: Writing in the Social Sciences

Although there may be some differences in writing expectations between disciplines, all writers of scholarly material are required to follow basic writing standards such as writing clear, concise, and grammatically correct sentences; using proper punctuation; and, in all Walden programs, using APA style. When writing in the social sciences, however, students must also be familiar with the goals of the discipline as these inform the discipline’s writing expectations. According to Ragin (1994), the primary goal of social science research is “identifying order in the complexity of social life” (para. 1). Serving the primary goal are the following secondary goals:

  • Identifying general patterns and relationships
  • Testing and refining theories
  • Making predictions
  • Interpreting culturally and historically significant phenomena
  • Exploring diversity
  • Giving voice
  • Advancing new theories (Ragin, 1994, para. 2)

To accomplish these goals, social scientists examine and explain the behavior of individuals, systems, cultures, communities, and so on (Dartmouth Writing Program, 2005), with the hope of adding to the world’s knowledge of a particular issue. Students in the social sciences should have these goals at the back of their minds when choosing a research topic or crafting an effective research question. Instead of simply restating what is already known, students must think in terms of how they can take a topic a step further. The elements that follow are meant to give students an idea of what is expected of social science writers.

If you have content-specific questions, be sure to ask your instructor. The Writing Center is available to help you present your ideas as effectively as possible.

Because one cannot say everything there is to say about a particular subject, writers in the social sciences present their work from a particular perspective. For instance, one might choose to examine the problem of childhood obesity from a psychological perspective versus a social or environmental perspective. One’s particular contribution, proposition, or argument is commonly referred to as the thesis and, according to Gerring et al. (2009), a good thesis is one that is “ new, true, and significant ” (p. 2). To strengthen their theses, social scientists might consider presenting an argument that goes against what is currently accepted within that field while carefully addressing counterarguments, and adequately explaining why the issue under consideration matters (Gerring et al., 2009). For instance, one might interpret a claim made by a classical theorist differently from the manner in which it is commonly interpreted and expound on the implications of the new interpretation. The thesis is particularly important because readers want to know whether the writer has something new or significant to say about a given topic. Thus, as you review the literature, before writing, it is important to find gaps and creative linkages between ideas with the goal of contributing something worthwhile to an ongoing discussion. In crafting an argument, you must remember that social scientists place a premium on ideas that are well reasoned and based on evidence. For a contribution to be worthwhile, you must read the literature carefully and without bias; doing this will enable you to identify some of the subtle differences in the viewpoints presented by different authors and help you to better identify the gaps in the literature. Because the thesis is essentially the heart of your discussion, it must be argued objectively and persuasively.

In examining a research question, social scientists may present a hypothesis and they may choose to use either qualitative or quantitative methods of inquiry or both. The methods most often used include interviews, case studies, observations, surveys, and so on. The nature of the study should dictate the chosen method. (Do keep in mind that not all your papers will require that you employ the various methods of social science research; many will simply require that you analyze an issue and present a well reasoned argument.) When you write your capstones, however, you will be required to come to terms with the reliability of the methods you choose, the validity of your research questions, and ethical considerations. You will also be required to defend each one of these components. The research process as a whole may include the following: formulation of research question, sampling and measurement, research design, and analysis and recommendations. Keep in mind that your method will have an impact on the credibility of your work, so it is important that your methods are rigorous. Walden offers a series of research methods courses to help students become familiar with research methods in the social sciences.

Organization

Most social science research manuscripts contain the same general organizational elements:

Title

Abstract

Introduction

Literature Review

Methods

Results

Discussion

References

Note that the presentation follows a certain logic: in the introduction one presents the issue under consideration; in the literature review, one presents what is already known about the topic (thus providing a context for the discussion), identifies gaps, and presents one’s approach; in the methods section, one identifies the method used to gather data; in the results and discussion sections, one then presents and explains the results in an objective manner, acknowledging the limitations of the study (American Psychological Association [APA], 2020). One may end with a presentation of the implications of the study and areas upon which other researchers might focus.

For a detailed explanation of typical research paper organization and content, be sure to review Table 3.1 (pp. 77-81) and Table 3.2 (pp. 95-99) of your 7th edition APA manual.

Objectivity

Although social scientists continue to debate whether objectivity is achievable in the social sciences and whether theories really represent objective scientific analyses, they agree that one’s work must be presented as objectively as possible. This does not mean that writers cannot be passionate about their subject; it simply means that social scientists are to think of themselves primarily as observers and they must try to present their findings in a neutral manner, avoiding biases, and acknowledging opposing viewpoints.

It is important to note that instructors expect social science students to master the content of the discipline and to be able to use discipline appropriate language in their writing. Successful writers of social science literature have cultivated the thinking skills that are useful in their discipline and are able to communicate professionally, integrating and incorporating the language of their field as appropriate (Colorado State University, 2011). For instance, if one were writing about how aid impacts the development of less developed countries, it would be important to know and understand the different ways in which aid is defined within the field of development studies.

body-homework-chalkboard

Listen: we know homework isn’t fun, but it is a good way to reinforce the ideas and concepts you’ve learned in class. But what if you’re really struggling with your homework assignments?

If you’ve looked online for a little extra help with your take-home assignments, you’ve probably stumbled across websites claiming to provide the homework help and answers students need to succeed . But can homework help sites really make a difference? And if so, which are the best homework help websites you can use?

Below, we answer these questions and more about homework help websites–free and paid. We’ll go over:

  • The basics of homework help websites
  • The cost of homework help websites
  • The five best homework websites out there
  • The pros and cons of using these websites for homework help
  • The line between “learning” and “cheating” when using online homework help
  • Tips for getting the most out of a homework help website

So let’s get started!

The Basics About Homework Help Websites–Free and Paid

Homework help websites are designed to help you complete your homework assignments, plain and simple.

What Makes a Homework Help Site Worth Using

Most of the best sites allow users to ask questions and then provide an answer (or multiple possible answers) and explanation in seconds. In some instances, you can even send a photo of a particular assignment or problem instead of typing the whole thing out!

Homework help sites also offer more than just help answering homework questions. Common services provided are Q&A with experts, educational videos, lectures, practice tests and quizzes, learning modules, math solving tools, and proofreading help. Homework help sites can also provide textbook solutions (i.e. answers to problems in tons of different textbooks your school might be using), one-on-one tutoring, and peer-to-peer platforms that allow you to discuss subjects you’re learning about with your fellow students.

And best of all, nearly all of them offer their services 24/7, including tutoring!

What You Should Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of scam sites out there willing to prey on desperate students. Before you sign up for any service, make sure you read reviews to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

A word to the wise: the more a company advertises help that veers into the territory of cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. The best homework help websites are going to help you learn the concepts you’ll need to successfully complete your homework on your own. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” a little later!)

body-gold-piggy-bank-money

You don't need a golden piggy bank to use homework help websites. Some provide low or no cost help for students like you!

How Expensive Are the Best Homework Help Websites?

First of all, just because a homework help site costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. Likewise, just because a homework help website is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best websites, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

When it comes to paid homework help services, the prices vary pretty widely depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to $150 dollars per month, with the most expensive services offering several hours of one-on-one tutoring with a subject expert per month.

The 5 Best Homework Help Websites

So, what is the best homework help website you can use? The answer is that it depends on what you need help with.

The best homework help websites are the ones that are reliable and help you learn the material. They don’t just provide answers to homework questions–they actually help you learn the material.

That’s why we’ve broken down our favorite websites into categories based on who they’re best for . For instance, the best website for people struggling with math might not work for someone who needs a little extra help with science, and vice versa.

Keep reading to find the best homework help website for you!

Best Free Homework Help Site: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

Not only is Khan Academy free, but it’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your needs. When you set up your account , you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help sites, including several AP classes.

Runner Up: Brainly.com offers a free service that allows you to type in questions and get answers and explanations from experts. The downside is that you’re limited to two answers per question and have to watch ads.

Best Paid Homework Help Site: Chegg

  • Price: $14.95 to $19.95 per month
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

This service has three main parts . The first is Chegg Study, which includes textbook solutions, Q&A with subject experts, flashcards, video explanations, a math solver, and writing help. The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school.

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects.

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers.

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

  • Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want
  • Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help.

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter!

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!

body-studtypool-logo

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

  • Best for: Science homework help
  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

Homework help websites can be a great resource if you’re struggling in a subject, or even if you just want to make sure that you’re really learning and understanding topics and ideas that you’re interested in. But, there are some possible drawbacks if you don’t use these sites responsibly.

We’ll go over the good–and the not-so-good–aspects of getting online homework help below.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Websites

First, let’s take a look at the benefits.

#1: Better Grades Beyond Homework

This is a big one! Getting outside help with your studies can improve your understanding of concepts that you’re learning, which translates into better grades when you take tests or write essays.

Remember: homework is designed to help reinforce the concepts you learned in class. If you just get easy answers without learning the material behind the problems, you may not have the tools you need to be successful on your class exams…or even standardized tests you’ll need to take for college.

#2: Convenience

One of the main reasons that online homework help is appealing is because it’s flexible and convenient. You don’t have to go to a specific tutoring center while they’re open or stay after school to speak with your teacher. Instead, you can access helpful resources wherever you can access the internet, whenever you need them.

This is especially true if you tend to study at off hours because of your extracurriculars, work schedule, or family obligations. Sites that offer 24/7 tutoring can give you the extra help you need if you can’t access the free resources that are available at your school.

#3: Variety

Not everyone learns the same way. Maybe you’re more of a visual learner, but your teacher mostly does lectures. Or maybe you learn best by listening and taking notes, but you’re expected to learn something just from reading the textbook .

One of the best things about online homework help is that it comes in a variety of forms. The best homework help sites offer resources for all types of learners, including videos, practice activities, and even one-on-one discussions with real-life experts.

This variety can also be a good thing if you just don’t really resonate with the way a concept is being explained (looking at you, math textbooks!).

body_stophand

Not so fast. There are cons to homework help websites, too. Get to know them below!

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Websites

Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of online homework help.

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option.

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up.

No matter which site you choose to use, make sure you research and read reviews before you sign up–especially if it’s a paid service!

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get.

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating.

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help Websites for You

Now that you know some of our favorite homework help websites, free and paid, you can start doing some additional research on your own to decide which services might work best for you! Here are some top tips for choosing a homework help website.

Tip 1: Decide How You Learn Best

Before you decide which site or sites you’re going to use for homework help, y ou should figure out what kind of learning style works for you the most. Are you a visual learner? Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With

Just because a homework help site is good overall doesn’t mean that it’s equally good for every subject. If you only need help in math, choose a site that specializes in that area. But if history is where you’re struggling, a site that specializes in math won’t be much help. So make sure to choose a site that you know provides high-quality help in the areas you need it most.

Tip 3: Decide How Much One-On-One Help You Need

This is really about cost-effectiveness. If you learn well on your own by reading and watching videos, a free site like Khan Academy is a good choice. But if you need actual tutoring, or to be able to ask questions and get personalized answers from experts, a paid site that provides that kind of service may be a better option.

Tip 4: Set a Budget

If you decide you want to go with a paid homework help website, set a budget first . The prices for sites vary wildly, and the cost to use them can add up quick.

Tip 5: Read the Reviews

Finally, it’s always a good idea to read actual reviews written by the people using these homework sites. You’ll learn the good, the bad, and the ugly of what the users’ experiences have been. This is especially true if you intend to subscribe to a paid service. You’ll want to make sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

Research Resources for the Social Sciences Assignment

Teachers who want to design their own lesson plans need look no further than the excellent and thorough compilation of resources that has been compiled by publisher McGraw-Hill Ryerson (McGraw-Hill, 1997). The website covers most areas of social science including economics, sociology, psychology, geography, and women’s studies. Although the website is not much to look at, and has an interface as primitive as its date stamp suggests, McGraw-Hill Ryerson does offer a wealth of hyperlinks and most of them are still live. This is not a website for teachers seeking pre-fabricated lesson plans, or students who need their hands held. Both teachers and students need to be independent thinkers with a thirst for knowledge when accessing the McGraw-Hill Ryerson website on the social sciences. Indeed, one of the weaknesses of the McGraw-Hill Ryerson website as an instructional guide or teaching resource is that it is not necessarily designed as such. The website is basically a list of web links in their corresponding subject areas. There is no annotation listed for any of the resources, placing the onus on the reader to filter through all the listed sites. Without annotations, the McGraw-Hill Ryerson list of links becomes daunting and even overwhelming to look at, and teachers without a lot of time on their hands might want to look elsewhere when designing a straightforward lesson. Teachers with plenty of time can construct unique lessons that might not be possible using any other social science resources. For example, the website lists links to Philippine legal codes. On the other hand, the McGraw-Hill Ryerson website can be valuable for researchers, including older students entrusted with the responsibility of independent research. Each list of links is extensive enough to offer the opportunity to explore a subject from many different facets. The McGraw-Hill website is not groundbreaking, or fascinating, but it is useful. Teachers will find herein a list of links in nearly all the domains of the social sciences. These links can inspire ideas for classroom instruction or units. Teachers can also point students to the website, as a way to encourage media literacy and avoid the problem of students citing academically invalid sources such as Wikipedia or About.com. PBS Teachers Social Studies The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) offers educators a wealth of credible resources for classroom instruction. Within the social sciences, PBS includes comprehensive and creative lesson plans at all grade levels, from pre-K to 12. The caliber of the lesson plans and their detail of instruction are impressive. The PBS website includes some PDF documents that offer overviews of several branches of the social sciences including government, politics, history, and global studies. There are also social science “study packs” in subjects including American identity, indigenous cultures, Asian-Americans, Pacific Islanders, patriotism, politics and art, China, criminal justice, religious diversity, and more. The subject areas are not as comprehensive as they could be, given the emphasis on politics and government, and parts of the website are clunky. For example, the “activity packs” are designed for social media integration. In general the PBS website is one of the web’s most valuable and useful for teachers. The social media integration for the activity packs might actually come in handy for teachers seeking to encourage a more educational function for social media platforms, and could be a useful teaching strategy. As a teacher of social studies and social science fields like sociology, I will use the PBS website. The lesson plans are excellent, and are in subject areas that I never would have considered myself. This allows me to think outside the box when working with my students. The multimedia emphasis on the PBS website lesson plans and activity packs will also be helpful for teachers that need a boost in their inclusion of new media to instructional design. Byrne, R. (2010) “12 Resources All Social Studies Teachers Should Try.” This page by social sciences educator Byrne (2010) does not include any lesson plans and is surprisingly broad in scope. However, educators must never take for granted the most basic web resources that can aid instruction or inspire learning. Buyrne (2010) does not assume anything, and lists resources that many teachers will already be aware of like Google Earth. However, many teachers like myself might never have considered using Google Earth as a springboard for academic learning or instructional strategy. There are other similarly common resources many teachers might overlook given the plethora of fancier ones available through proprietary technologies or prefabricated lesson plans that preclude the instructor from having to engage critically with the material. Byrne (2010) asks social sciences instructors to think more openly about their subjects by encouraging an investigation of resources on the Internet ranging from Google Scholar to Playing History. Because of the inclusion of diverse resources, the Byrne (2010) collection of links is appropriate for teachers in all grade levels. The games on Playing History, for example, might appeal less to 11th graders than to 4th graders. Likewise, 4th graders will get very little out of a Google Scholar search, but a high schooler needs to know how to begin accessing academic databases and exploring the depth of scholarly articles that are available, at least in their abstract forms. It would have been better if Byrne included some more scope to the social science rubric. There are no links directly related to gender issues, or to issues related to race, class, and social power. The links are too tame, and too generalized. Teachers will need to insert their own ideas and draw up their own lesson plans to get the most out of this web resource. A Word About Generative AI Large Language Models

A new and rapidly evolving phenomenon impacting higher education is the availability of generative artificial intelligence systems [such as Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer or ChatGPT]. They have been developed from scanning text from millions of books, web sites, and other sources to enable algorithms within the system to learn patterns in how words and sentences are constructed. This allows these systems to respond to a broad range of questions and prompts, generate stories, compose essays, create lists, and more. Generative AI systems are not actually thinking or understanding like a human, but they are good at mimicking human-like text based on what it has learned from the sources of input data used to build and enhance its artificial intelligence algorithms, protocols, and standards.

As such, generative AI systems [a.k.a., “Large Language Models”] have emerged , depending on one’s perspective, as either a threat or an opportunity in in how faculty create or modify class assignments and how students approach the task of writing a college-level research paper. We are in the very earliest stages of understanding how LLMs may impact learning outcomes associated with information literacy, i.e., fluency in effectively applying the skills needed to effectively identify, gather, organize, critically evaluate, interpret, and report information. However, before this is understood, these systems will continue to improve and become more sophisticated, as will academic integrity detection programs used to identify AI generated text in student papers [e.g., Turnitin].

When given a research assignment that has an element of writing, it is up to your professor if using ChatGTP is permitted or not. Some professors embrace using these systems as part of an in-class writing exercise to help understand their limitations, while others will warn against its use because of their current limitations and biases. That said, the future of information seeking using LLMs means that the intellectual spaces associated with research and writing will likely collapse into a single online environment in which students will be able to perform in-depth searches for information connected to the Libraries' many resources.

As LLMs become more sophisticated, here are some potential ways generative artificial intelligence programs could facilitate organizing and writing your social sciences research paper:

  • Explore a Topic – develop a research problem related to the questions you have about a general subject of inquiry.
  • Formulate Ideas – obtain background information and explore ways to place the research problem within specific contexts .
  • Zero in on Specific Research Questions and Related Sub-questions – create a query-based framework for how to investigate the research problem.
  • Locate Sources to Answer those Questions – begin the initial search for sources concerning your research questions.
  • Obtain Summaries of Sources – build a synopsis of the sources to help determine their relevance to the research questions underpinning the problem.
  • Outline and Structure an Argument – present information helpful to formulating an argument or an explanation for a stated position.
  • Draft and Iterate on a Final Essay – create a final essay based on a process of repeating the action of text generation on the results of each prior action [i.e., ask follow up questions to build on or clarify initial results].

Despite their power to create text, generative AI systems are far from perfect and their ability to “answer” questions can be misleading, deceiving, or outright false. Described below are some current problems adapted from an essay written by Bernard Marr at Forbes Magazine and reiterated by researchers studying LLMs and writing. These issues focus on problems with using ChatGPT, but they are applicable to any current Large Language Model .

  • Not Connected to the Internet . Although the generative AI systems may appear to possess a significant amount of information, most LLM’s are currently not mining the Internet for that information [Note that this is changing quickly. For example, an AI chatbot feature is now embedded into Microsoft’s Bing search engine, but you'll probably need to pay for this feature in the future]. Without a connection to the Internet, LLMs cannot provide real-time information about a topic. As a result, the scope of research is limited and any new developments in a particular field of study will not be included in the responses. In addition, the LLMs can only accept input in text format. Therefore, other forms of knowledge such as videos, web sites, or images, are excluded as part of the inquiry prompts.
  • Hallucinating Facts and Sources . ChatGPT and other large language models hallucinate. In other words, they are capable of making stuff up, particularly when the systems are asked to create a list of scholarly sources or when presenting factual statements in text that may read as being semantically or syntactically credible, but is actually false or nonsensical. Researchers have already noted that this has broad implications for using LLMs in health care, diagnostic medicine, and applied science disciplines, such as structural engineering, where false or inaccurate information could prove harmful or dangerous. Given this, all AI generated text must be proofread for accuracy because submitting papers with false statements signals to your professor that you didn't take the assignment seriously but, more importantly, any unverifiable references to sources in your paper exposes you to allegations of plagiarism.
  • Trouble Generating Long-form, Structured Content . ChatGPT and other systems are inadequate at producing long-form content that follows a particular structure, format, or narrative flow. The models are capable of creating coherent and grammatically correct text and, as a result, they are currently best suited for generating shorter pieces of content like summaries of topics, bullet point lists, or brief explanations. However, they are poor at creating a comprehensive, coherent, and well-structured college-level research paper.
  • Limitations in Handling Multiple Tasks . Generative AI systems perform best when given a single task or objective to focus on. If you ask LLMs to perform multiple tasks at the same time [e.g., a question that includes multiple sub-questions], the models struggle to prioritize them, which will lead to a decrease in the effectiveness and accuracy of the results.
  • Biased Responses . This is important to understand. While ChatGPT and other systems are trained on a large set of text data, that data has not been widely shared so that it can be reviewed and critically analyzed. You can ask the systems what sources they are using, but any responses can not be independently verified. Therefore, it is not possible to identify any hidden biases or prejudices that exist within the data [i.e., it doesn't cite its sources]. This means the LLM may generate responses that are biased or discriminatory.
  • Accuracy Problems or Grammatical Issues . The sensitivity to typographical errors, grammatical errors, and misspellings is currently very limited in LLMs. The models may produce responses that are technically correct, but they may not be entirely accurate in terms of context or relevance. This limitation can be particularly challenging when processing complex or specialized information where accuracy and precision are essential. Given this, never take the information that is generated at face value; always proofread and verify the results!

As they currently exist, ChatGPT and other Large Language Models truly are artificial in their intelligence. They cannot express thoughts, feelings, or other affective constructs that help a reader intimately engage with the author's written words; the output contains text, but the systems are incapable of producing creative expressions or thoughts, such as, conveying the idea of willful deception and other narrative devices that you might find in a poem or song lyric. Although creative devices, such as metaphors, idioms, imagery or subtleties in narrative rhythm, style, or voice, are rarely used in academic writing, it does illustrate that personalizing the way you present your research [e.g., sharing a personal story relating to the significance of the topic or being asked to write a reflective paper ] cannot be generated artificially.

Ethical Considerations

In the end, the ethics of whether to use ChatGTP or similar platforms to help write your research paper is up to you; it’s an introspective negotiation between you and your conscience. As noted by Bjork (2023) and others, though, it is important to keep in mind these overarching ethical problems related to the use of LLMs:

  • LLMs Do Not Understand the Meaning of Words . Without meaning as a guide, these systems use algorithms that rely on formulating context clues, stylistic structures, writing forms, linguistic patterns, and word frequency in determining how to respond to queries. This functionality means that, by default, LLMs perpetuate dominant modes of writing and language use while minimizing or hiding less common ones. As a result,
  • LLMs Prioritize Standard American English . Since White English-speaking men have dominated most writing-intensive sectors of the knowledge economy, such as, journalism, law, politics, medicine, academia, and perhaps most importantly, computer programming, writers and speakers of African American or Indigenous English that use forms of language with its own grammar, lexicon, slang, and history of resistance within the dominant culture, are penalized and shamed for writing as they speak. The default functionality and outputs of LLMs, therefore, can privilege forms of English writing developed primarily by the dominant culture.
  • LLMs Do Not Protect User Privacy . ChatGPT and other platforms record and retain the entire content of your conversations with the systems. This means any information you enter, including personal information or, for example, any documents you ask the systems to revise is retained and cannot be removed. Although the American Data Privacy and Protection Act was being considered within the 117th Congress, there is no federal privacy law that regulates how these for-profit companies can store, use, or possibly sell information entered into their platforms. Given this, it is highly recommended that personal information should never be included in any queries.

NOTE :  If your professor allows you to use generative AI programs or you decide on your own to use an LLM for a writing assignment, then this fact should be cited in your research paper, just as any other source of information used to write your paper should be acknowledged. Why? Because unlike grammar or citation tools, such as Grammarly or Citation Machine that correct text you've already written, generative AI programs are creating new content that is not in your own words. Currently, the American Psychological Association (APA), Modern Language Association (MLA) and the Chicago Manual of Style provide citation recommendations in this area.

ANOTHER NOTE : As described above, LLMs have significant deficiencies that still require attention to thorough proofreading and source verification, an ability to discern quality information from misleading, false, irrelevant, or even made up information, a capacity to interpret and critically analyze what you have found, and the skills required to extrapolate meaning from the research your have conducted. For help with these elements of research and writing, you should still contact a librarian for help.

YET ANOTHER NOTE : Researchers are finding early evidence that suggests over-reliance on ChatGPT and other LLM platforms for even the simplest writing task may, over time, undermine confidence in student's own writing ability. Just like giving a class presentation or participating effectively in a group project, good writing is an acquired skill that is only improved by the act of doing; the more you write, the more comfortable and confident you become expressing your own ideas, opinions, and judgements applied to the problem you have researched. Substituting LLMs with your own voice can inhibit your growth as a writer, so give yourself room to write creatively and with confidence by accepting LLMs as a tool rather than a definitive source of text.

Metrics details

The prevalence of anxiety is high among international medical sciences students and it increased even more during the COVID-19 pandemic due to different restrictions and social isolation. Successful sociocultural adjustment and social support could be important factors in overcoming those challenges, however, there is a lack of studies which would investigate the role of those factors among inter- national medical students. This study aimed to assess the role of sociocultural adjustment and social support as predictors for international medical students’ anxiety during COVID-19.

Two measurements were conducted via self-reported questionnaires which consisted of three scales - SCAS, MSPSS and GAD-7. In total, 82 international medical students participated in both measurements in this longitudinal study.

The findings indicated that 37% of international students had symptoms of moderate or severe anxiety during their first year of studies at university. In the second year, during the COVID-19 pandemic and an official lockdown, 35% of international students had symptoms of moderate or severe anxiety. In addition, this study showed that gender and sociocultural adjustment did not play a role as predictors of students’ anxiety during the second year of studies. However, this study revealed that social support provided by family during the first year of studies, as well as having friends or family members who had been ill with COVID-19 predicted higher levels of anxiety at second measurement, while sociocultural adjustment was an even stronger predictor of anxiety in the second year of studies of international medical students.

Conclusions

This knowledge can help to better understand how international medical students felt during the COVID-19 pandemic and what role the above- mentioned factors played in the students’ anxiety. As the anxiety level is quite high among international medical students, universities and mental health service providers should take it into consideration and help them to overcome those challenges.

Peer Review reports

COVID-19 pandemic and anxiety

The World Health Organization announced a pandemic due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus worldwide on 11 March 2020 [ 1 ]. Studies reveal that international students were among the primary groups who were the most impacted by the pandemic of COVID-19 [ 2 ]. Notably, during the pandemic, anxiety became a common mental health condition [ 3 ] with a high prevalence in the general public [ 4 ] among adults [ 5 ] and international students in particular [ 6 ]. International students were specifically impacted by COVID-19, as they encountered new, unforeseen problems and uncertainties as a result of closed universities, online learning, travel limitations, and other restrictions, as well as worry for their loved ones and their own health.

Moreover, medical students are the population considered to have higher levels of anxiety in general due to the study stress, higher demands and competing environment compared to the students from the other study programs [ 7 , 8 ]. Additionally, being not only medical students, but also international students leads to more pressure on those students, as they need to deal with different challenges of cross-cultural adjustment and at the same time lacking social support therefore they are classified as a group at risk for the variety of different mental health problems including anxiety [ 5 ]. And COVID-19 pandemic could even worsen this situation. Feeling anxious is a natural response to stress, and in certain situations, moderate levels of anxiety can actually be advantageous. Anxiety is related to fear and manifests as a future-oriented state of mood that consists of a complex physiological, affective, cognitive, and behavioral response system associated with preparation for upcoming events or circumstances perceived as threatening [ 9 ]. Anxiety serves as a signal of potential hazards, prompting people to be vigilant and ready [ 10 ]. However, problems arise when the intensity of stress and anxiety becomes excessively high, leading to an interference with an individual’s daily life, routines, engagements, and overall performance. In a study environment, increased anxiety can reduce the ability to absorb information, its processing and reproducing when needed. Moreover, it might have a negative effect on working memory, it can also interfere with attention, thus leading to a decline in academic achievements [ 11 ].

Other important factors that could be affected by COVID-19 and might con- tribute to the anxiety experienced by international medical students are social support and sociocultural adjustment. An analysis of 711 students from 41 countries found that anxiety, social isolation, loneliness, and a lack of in-person interactions with peers and professors were among the top challenges during the COVID-19 epidemic [ 12 ].

  • Social support

Some international students were cut off from their classmates and even their relatives and friends during the COVID-19 pandemic because of online coursework, travel limitations, and the inability to leave homes and communicate with wider social networks. This social isolation, loss of social interactions and sometimes even social support might be thought to have had a negative impact on their mental health and especially on their anxiety level. It is known that social isolation is a risk factor for international students’ stress level, anxiety and mental health in general. In contrast to social isolation, well-developed social networks and social support are very important factors for individuals to cope with distress. They can also lower the risk of mental health problems, such as anxiety [ 13 , 14 ]. A study by Li et al. [ 15 ] indicated that social support is a major protective factor for mental health in challenging environments and it serves as a buffer against the negative effects of stressors. A recent study [ 16 ] conducted in China revealed that strong social support was associated with lower anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. Li et al. [ 15 ] state that by demonstrating empathy and offering support, friends and family can assist young adults in managing stress and maintaining excellent mental health. Additionally, social support is inversely correlated with the intensity of mental health symptoms and aids in maintaining a sense of control when coping with stressful events and anxiety [ 17 ]. International students who study abroad and do not have direct connections with their families and friends back home might receive less social support and therefore might be at higher risk of mental health problems compared with local students [ 14 ]. A study conducted in China revealed similar results, that students who had low levels of social support had higher levels of anxiety compared with the students, who had higher social support during the COVID-19 pandemic [ 18 ].

  • Sociocultural adjustment

Sociocultural adjustment might be another important protective factor for mental health and particularly the anxiety of international medical students who are studying in Lithuania. On March 16 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown were announced in Lithuania. Due to the lockdown, studies were organized online [ 3 ] and it was a major challenge for international students who were residing in Lithuania at that moment. Some international students were isolated from their new environment far away from their close ones during this difficult period, having a challenging time returning to their native countries. These circumstances might have interfered with their sociocultural adjustment, psychological well-being, and anxiety [ 19 ]. Adjusting to a new culture and acculturating is one of the main tasks that any new international student deals with when coming to study in a new sociocultural environment [ 2 ]. According to Ward and Kennedy [ 20 ], sociocultural adjustment is the ability to adapt well, gain skills needed for the new cultural environment, and manage the interactive features of the host culture. It might be measured by evaluating different problems that immigrants face in their daily lives. Sociocultural adjustment may be understood through learning social skills and through cultural learning [ 21 ]. It is a dynamic and changing process, which leads to better adaptation in a new cultural environment [ 22 ]. However, if international students lack those skills or this process is hampered by uncertain conditions, including restrictions and social isolation brought on by the pandemic, they might face different problems and more challenges in the new environment which might lead to higher levels of stress and anxiety.

Current study

To provide the reader with some context the lockdown in Lithuania was announced on 16th March 2020 and studies were stopped for two weeks all over the country. After that, most of the studies were moved to online mode till the end of the study year. After that decision, the majority of international students left for their home countries, and only a minority of students stayed in Lithuania until the end of the academic year. From September 1st, the beginning of the new academic year, studies at the University were organized partly online, and partly on-site. Most of the lectures were given online, whereas practical seminars and tutorials were organized on-site as medical studies are based on a lot of hands-on studies at the University and different clinics.

In general, the students are enrolled to the University after they pass the entrance examination. Studies are organized in English, but they have to learn the Lithuanian language to be able to understand and communicate with the patients. Studies are also based on a Problem-based learning approach and there are many hands-on and simulation training involved in curriculum of the studies. The baseline measurements of the current study happened just before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Lithuania, while the second measurement was one year later, after some adjustment to pandemic challenges. Anxiety fluctuates, so it is especially relevant to assess it longitudinally, because the observed anxiety may be caused by social, personal, or pandemic variables.

Therefore, this study aimed to assess the importance of social support and sociocultural adaptation as potentially protective factors against international medical sciences students’ anxiety during COVID-19.When investigating the role of social support as a potential independent predictor of anxiety, we specifically focus on the social support perceived by medical sciences students during their first year, as it may influence their anxiety levels in the second year, thus allowing sufficient time for its potential impact on anxiety to manifest. Additionally, we aim to determine whether the adjustment experienced during the first year, which occurred before the official COVID-19 lockdown, has greater significance for students’ anxiety during their second year of studies compared to the sociocultural re-adaptation during the second year. This re-adaptation occurred as students returned partly to on-site studies in their host countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding the fluctuations of anxiety levels throughout the academic years, including periods of heightened stress such as a pandemic, along with identifying the risk and protective factors, can empower medical educators to recognize the challenges students encounter and offer essential support when needed. This comprehension enables educators to be more responsive to students' needs and to implement effective strategies for promoting their well-being throughout their educational journey. Most of the previous studies done with international students are cross-sectional, mostly conducted during the first year of studies when the adjustment process is not over yet. Therefore, there is a lack of longitudinal studies that measure how international students’ sociocultural adjustment changes over time. This research is based on longitudinal measurement, so it enables analysis of how sociocultural adjustment and anxiety evolve over the first two years of studies. It gives a stronger basis for causal relationships between those variables. Moreover, this study can reveal how such challenges as COVID-19 and social isolation can impact the adaptation of international medical students.

Participants and procedure

The study was conducted in two waves. The first measurement took place in February–March 2020, and the second in October 2020. In total, 133 international full-time undergraduate students from various countries participated in this study during the first measurement. The first measurement was carried out during international students’ first year of studies, from February to March 2020 in Health Sciences University in Kaunas, Lithuania, just before the official lockdown in Lithuania was announced. The second measurement took place in October 2020. In total, 165 students participated in this measurement during their second year. Out of them, 82 international students aged 22.48 ±3,22 years on average participated in both assessments. The sample size was calculated using the following formula [ 23 ]:

z (the z score)=1.96

e (the margin of error)=10 N (the population size)=301

p (the population proportion)=0.3

The calculation of the sample size revealed that 64 or more measurements are needed to have a confidence level of 95% that the real value is within ±10% of the measured value.

Both times students filled out paper questionnaires in lecture rooms. We measured sociocultural adjustment and anxiety level in the first and second year of studies and perceived social support in the first year of studies.

Participants were studying medical sciences (Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Odontology). International students came from China, Cyprus, Finland, Germany, India, Ireland, Israel, Norway, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, and the UK. Participants also belonged to different religious groups, being mostly Jewish, Christian, and Muslim, or indicating themselves as non-religious. The distribution of the sample by socio-demographic groups is shown in Table 1 .

A self-reported questionnaire was used to collect data. Some basic sociodemographic items such as age, gender, country of origin, religion and study programme were included. A question of whether the students or their relatives or friends had been infected with COVID-19 was also added.

The questionnaire consisted of three scales.

The Sociocultural Adaptation Scale (SCAS) was used to assess the sociocul- tural adjustment of the students [ 24 ]. As is mentioned in systematic reviews of cross-cultural adjustment this scale is one of the most popular tools used in different countries to measure the sociocultural adjustment of international students [ 25 , 26 ]

The full scale has 40 items. It can be modified according to sample characteristics; therefore, we only used the first 10 items as has been done previously in many cross-sectional studies and comparative analyses. Each statement is rated on a 5-point scale, ranging from ‘no difficulty’ to ‘extreme difficulty.’ A higher score indicates greater challenges in sociocultural adjustment. The respondents must indicate the amount of difficulty they are facing in everyday life in new sociocultural environment areas such as using the transport system and going shopping, also communication and management of other interactions (e.g., dealing with people of higher status), or getting used to a new pace of life. Examples of such statements could be “Talking about yourself to others”, “Making friends”; and “Understanding jokes and humor”. However, those difficulties are not related to discomfort, embarrassment, and anxiety. In our study, the 10-item scale’s internal consistency in two measurements was 0.81 and 0.79.

The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) was used to measure social support [ 27 ]. It consists of 12 items. Participants rated the statements using a 7-point Likert-type scale, ranging from “very strongly disagree” to “very strongly agree.” Lower scores on the scale indicate a lower level of perceived social support. Individuals scoring between 1 and 2.9 may be classified as perceiving low received social support; a score falling within the range of 3 to 5 indicates a moderate level of social support, while a score between 5.1 and 7 indicates a high level of social support. The items are grouped into three subscales – family, friends, and significant others. Each subscale consists of an equal number of questions, for example, “I can count on my friends when things go wrong” or “There is a special person who is around when I am in need”. In this study, the internal consistency of the scale in two measurements was 0.92 and 0.93.

The General Anxiety Disorder-7 scale (GAD-7) was used to measure the risk of a general anxiety disorder [ 28 ]. The GAD-7 is the most widely used assessment scale for anxiety in clinical practice and research due to its diagnostic reliability and efficiency [ 29 ]. It is a self-report scale which consists of 7 items. A higher score shows a higher level of anxiety. A score of 10 or above indicates a cut-off for identifying cases of GAD. Cut-off points of 5, 10, and 15 might represent mild, moderate, and severe levels of anxiety. Examples of items are “Not being able to stop or control worrying”, “Being so restless that it is hard to sit still”, or “Becoming easily annoyed or irritable”. In our study, the scale’s internal consistency during the two measurements was 0.88 and 0.89.

Data analysis

IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 27 (IBM Corp., Armonk, N.Y., USA) was used to perform statistical analysis for this research. Arithmetic mean ± (SD) and proportions (%) were presented in this study. Skewness and kurtosis coefficients were used to test the normality of the distribution of data. To measure the internal consistency of SCAS, MSPSS, GAD-7 the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used. All instruments had Cronbach’s alpha coefficients above 0.7 which was acceptable for proper reliability.

For inferential analysis, the chi-squared test was used to examine the differences between the genders and the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used to measure the direction and strength of relationships between the ordinal variables, such as anxiety, social support, and sociocultural adjustment. The comparison of two groups was performed using the Student’s t-test for independent samples. The univariate and multivariate linear regression was carried out to analyze the significance of perceived social support and sociocultural adjustment on the anxiety level of second-year international students. The strength of putative predictors was expressed in B (absolute effect size) and Beta (relative effect size).

The statistical significance level was set at p< 0.05.

Descriptives

Descriptive statistics of the main variables are shown in Table 2 . In the first measurement, 18.8% of the sample reported having symptoms of moderate anxiety, while 18.8% had symptoms of severe anxiety. In the second measurement, 20,7% of the sample reported symptoms of moderate anxiety and 14,5% had symptoms of severe anxiety.

Comparing by gender, at the time of the first measurement, women reported more symptoms of anxiety than men ( p< 0.05, see Table 3 ), however, by the second measurement there was no statistically significant difference between genders. Men and women did not differ in their perceived social support and sociocultural adjustment ( p> 0.05).

Associations of perceived social support and sociocultural adjustment with anxiety

Based on correlations, it was revealed that students with higher levels of anxiety in the second year of studies reported lower social support from family ( r =-0.28, p =0.010) perceived during the first year of studies as well as a poorer sociocultural adjustment at first ( r =0.29, p =0.010) and second year of their studies ( r =0.41, p< 0.001).

Prediction of anxiety

Based on the bivariate correlations, linear regression was carried out to predict the role of social support, sociocultural adjustment, gender, and having friends or family members who had been ill with COVID-19 on the levels of anxiety at the time of the second measurement (Table 4 ).

Model 1 included perceived social support in the first year and sociocultural adjustment at the time of the first measurement as well as gender. None of these independent variables were statistically significant predictors of anxiety ( p> 0.05). Having friends or family members who had been ill with COVID-19 was added to the Model 2 and there were still no significant predictors ( p> 0.05), even though the trend was that those students whose family or friends had been ill with COVID-19 were more likely to experience higher levels of anxiety (Beta=-0.21, p =0.059).

Finally, sociocultural adjustment at the time of the second measurement was added to make the Model 3 for a complex statistical prediction of anxiety. Results indicate that having friends or family members who had been ill with COVID-19 significantly predicted higher anxiety levels at the time of the second measurement (Beta=-0.22, p =0.039). A similar effect was found for social support from family at baseline (Beta=- 0.26, p =0.047), while the greatest was for sociocultural adjustment at the time of the second measurement – it was the strongest independent predictor of the second-year students’ anxiety (Beta=0.36, p =0.013).

This study aimed to assess the role of sociocultural adjustment and social support as predictors for international students’ anxiety during COVID-19. The results of this study reveal that 37% of the international students reported having symptoms of moderate or severe anxiety during their first year of studies, while 35% reported it during their second year of studies. The total prevalence of international students’ anxiety slightly decreased during the second study year, however, the difference was not significant as could be expected. This small decrease in anxiety might be due to the continuing effects of the pandemic, an increased number of COVID-19 cases in total population, and to lockdown.

The level of anxiety among international students in Lithuania was quite high. However, it seemed to be similar to other authors’ study results across different countries. An analysis of other studies conducted before the COVID-19 pandemic revealed that the prevalence of anxiety among international students was between 21% in Kazakhstan [ 30 ], 29% in the USA [ 16 ], and 49% in Germany [ 31 ].

Other studies conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic also showed a high prevalence of anxiety among international students. One study conducted in 9 countries (Poland, Slovenia, Czechia, Ukraine, Russia, Germany, Turkey, Israel and Colombia) revealed that on average 30% of the international students had moderate or severe anxiety symptoms with the lowest percentage in Germany (5%) and Czechia (13%) and the highest prevalence in Turkey (51%) [ 32 ]. Anxiety was found in 65% of international students in China during the COVID-19 pandemic and a study by Cao et al. [ 18 ] on the role of COVID-19 on Chinese students uncovered that 26% of the students were suffering from anxiety because of COVID-19.

Gender-wise, first-year female students reported more symptoms of anxiety than males, however, by the second year of studies this difference had disappeared. Those findings contradict the results of other studies which showed that females were more mentally vulnerable than males during the COVID-19 outbreak and had a higher prevalence of anxiety [ 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 ]. However, a retrospective survey by Hendriksen et al. [ 37 ] similar to our study revealed that the difference in gender was observed only during the first lockdown at the beginning of the pandemic (from March to May 2020), and it ceased to be significant later in the period of second lockdown from November 2020 to May 2020. Men and women did not differ in their sociocultural adjustment or perceived social support during the first and the second measurement. Future research is warranted on the long-term dynamic of anxiety across genders in periods of crisis.

This study revealed that such independent variable as gender did not play a role as a predictor of anxiety in the second year of studies. In contrast, this study reveals that social support is an important factor and those who perceive more social support from their families during the first year of studies, are more likely to experience lower levels of anxiety. A possible explanation for this might be that perceived support from family members is a protective factor against mental health issues of young adults as their close ones provide needed assistance support and empathy during difficult times such as the COVID-19 pandemic [ 15 ]. In contrast, a study by Kolozsvari [ 38 ] revealed that even though social support perceived from the family members lowered the level of stress of the local students in Hungary, it was not significant for international students. Unlike the social support perceived from friends, that seemed to gain more importance for the international students in Hungary. In our study, perceived support from friends did not play a role in anxiety of international students.

Moreover, those international students whose family members or friends had been infected with COVID-19 during the second year were more likely to experience higher levels of anxiety. The study by Moscaritolo et al. [ 2 ] similarly showed that having relatives or friends infected with COVID-19 was a risk factor for increasing anxiety. However, a study by Fruehwirth et al. [ 6 ] revealed that COVID-19 diagnosis and hospitalization of oneself, family members or friends were not associated with increased anxiety symptoms.

Furthermore, the level of sociocultural adjustment in the middle of the first study year did not play a significant role in later anxiety during the pandemic. This result might indicate that such critical, unclear, and frightening circumstances as the COVID-19 pandemic, sudden lockdown, social isolation, and other restrictions might interfere with the normal pace of students’ life and socialization and, as a result, the typical process of sociocultural adjustment is disrupted. Later, when the studies return to onsite mode, students have to readjust to the new reality and new challenges. International students have to repeatedly readapt to the sociocultural context which adds additional stressors and anxiety. Therefore, this readjustment becomes a significant factor for students’ anxiety and is an even stronger predictor of anxiety compared to the COVID-19 experience in family and among friends, or the social support perceived by the family. In contrast, a successful sociocultural readjustment to the new environment accompanied by sufficient family support are crucial protective factors for international students dealing with different challenges and anxiety caused by transition and pandemics.

Limitations

The size of the sample was not large because of the limited number of first-year and second-year international undergraduate students at this University. Also, this study was conducted only in one university and not all students participated in both measurements as not everyone was present onsite during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the majority of cases, it happened due to lockdown regulations and in some cases due to significant obstacles to leaving their home country and reaching Lithuania for studies. Participants of this study had very diverse ethnic backgrounds and nationalities which made it difficult to compare the results of this study with others where the sample represents one bigger national group. For some students, English was not their first language, which may have had an impact on the quality of their responses and how well they comprehended some questions. Also, in some countries, it is not socially acceptable to talk about and reveal mental health problems, which might have affected the truthfulness of some answers to this questionnaire. Future studies should consider such factors as discrimination, stress, acculturation strategies and others which might also play an important role in international students’ adjustment and psychological well-being.

This study revealed the importance of sociocultural adjustment, social support perceived from families and COVID-19 experience for international medical science students’ anxiety level during the second year of studies. Interestingly, the sociocultural adjustment level which was reached after the first semester of the first year didn’t play any significant role later in the anxiety of the second-year international students. That suggests an idea that after such critical events as COVID-19 which disturbed the international students’ everyday life and a normal adjustment process, a new readjustment to the sociocultural environment is needed to help students to deal with different stressors and anxiety. Therefore, some university programs, such as mentorship and special adaptation courses should be implemented not only during the first year of studies but also later in the curriculum or extracurriculars of the international students. Also, to facilitate sociocultural adjustment in the host country, mixed groups of international and local students could be created. On-site studies and group work tasks including an explanation of the local and international context in such groups could increase multicultural contacts and communication which may lead to a more sufficient understanding of the new cultures and better sociocultural adjustment in general. To ensure a calmer and secure atmosphere for international students, it is worth conducting classes in smaller groups. In this case, it is easier to apply an individualized approach to each student, and also it is easier to notice if any student is having problems, and as a result, such students will be more often provided with appropriate educational or social-emotional assistance.

Furthermore, the current research indicates that social support perceived by families is inversely correlated with symptoms of anxiety, acting as a protective factor against international students’ anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Therefore, social support emerges as a vital resource for international students in navigating stressors during pandemic outbreaks.

Moreover, as the number of medical sciences students suffering from moderate or severe anxiety is quite high among international students and even students who had not been diagnosed with COVID-19 experienced notable levels of anxiety related to the pandemic, more attention to mental health services should be addressed to help students navigate through uncertainty and deal with mental health problems. The findings of this study could help universities and psychological support service providers and educators to better understand the process of students’ sociocultural adjustment during the first two years of their studies abroad and prepare for some critical situations such as pandemics and various other restrictions. This study could also be helpful for universities to develop effective international students support policies and strategies for the future.

Ancient Indigenous lineage of Blackfoot Confederacy goes back 18,000 years to last ice age, DNA reveals

A new DNA study of living and historical members of the Blackfoot Confederacy in the U.S. and Canada suggests that they share a lineage with people from the last ice age.

Antique photograph of Blackfeet Indians.

Members of the Blackfoot Confederacy have an ancient lineage that goes back 18,000 years, meaning that Indigenous peoples living in the Great Plains of Montana and southern Alberta today can trace their origins to ice age predecessors, a new DNA study reveals.

In the new study, published April 3 in the journal Science Advances , a team of researchers led by three members of the Blackfoot Confederacy investigated the genetic history of their tribes.

Comprising four related tribes — the Blackfeet, Kainai, Piikani and Siksika — members of the Blackfoot Confederacy historically included nomadic bison hunters and trout fishers. Their territory was divided in the mid-19th century by the U.S.-Canadian border, and in the late 19th century both countries' governments forced the Indigenous confederacy members to settle on reservations.

Since then, tribes in the Blackfoot Confederacy have had to defend their land claims and water rights, in spite of both archaeological evidence and oral traditions testifying to their deep history in the area. To provide an additional line of evidence that could help secure their treaty rights as well as to advance scientific knowledge of Indigenous genomic lineages, members of the Kainai Nation in Canada and the Blackfeet tribe in Montana partnered with scientists from multiple U.S. universities to investigate their genetic history.

The research team took samples for whole-genome sequencing from seven skeletons that were carbon-dated to between 1805 and 1917, a period in which interactions between Blackfoot people and Euroamericans were increasing because of the fur trade. While DNA preservation was not ideal, as the samples came from skeletons that had been exposed on a burial platform, all the remains produced mitochondrial DNA information, or genetic data passed down from the maternal side. Additionally, six present-day tribal members were whole-genome sequenced.

The genetic information revealed that the historical Blackfoot Ancestors and the present-day Blackfeet/Kainai shared a large fraction of their genome, suggesting a biological relationship. This continuity of genes was expected, but the team also found that this lineage was different from previously reported North and South American Indigenous groups. Based on statistical modeling, the team believes that the Blackfoot people split from other groups in the Late Pleistocene, around 18,000 years ago, as multiple population waves from a single source fanned out into the vast geographic land of the Americas.

In addition to identifying this genomic diversity that was previously unknown to science, the study is important because of its framing, according to Graciela Cabana , an anthropological geneticist at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville who was not involved in the research. "It's pretty obvious that this was written from more of an Indigenous voice," Cabana told Live Science in an email. "It's actually rare to see a collaborative study that is actually led by Indigenous community members on Ancestors."

Co-author Ripan Malhi , a genetic anthropologist at the University of Illinois, told Live Science in an email that genomics should be conducted by community members who can use this tool from an Indigenous viewpoint, "or through a community-collaborative approach where community partners have equal control in how the research is conducted and reported."

This study comes out of the Blackfoot Early Origins Program, which documents Blackfoot persistence in their aboriginal territory, co-author Maria Zedeño , a research anthropologist at the University of Arizona, who co-directs the program, told Live Science in an email. "Genomics study is only one project in this program," Zedeño said, and "the tribal leaders reviewed its design and development at every step of the process."

Editor's note: Updated at 5:30 p.m. EDT on April 13 to note that there were three lead Blackfoot authors, not two as had been previously stated.

Lab week 2024: celebrating medical laboratory professionals.

April 14 - 20, 2024, is Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, an annual celebration to highlight and show appreciation for laboratory professionals, including those at the State Hygienic Laboratory (SHL) at the University of Iowa.

Lab Week graphic

Lab Week is sponsored by the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science and coordinated by 17 national clinical laboratory organizations.

“At the State Hygienic Laboratory, our teams have demonstrated again and again that we are prepared to skillfully respond to evolving emerging public health threats, adapting to meet the changing needs of laboratory medicine and the evolution of diagnostic testing,” said Michael Pentella, SHL director.

Established in 1904, the SHL works closely with local, state, and federal partners to fulfill its mission in the Iowa Code to investigate and evaluate any issues that are in the interest of environmental quality and public health in the state. The lab serves all of Iowa’s 99 counties through disease detection, environmental monitoring, and newborn and maternal screening. Today, the SHL also quickly responds to infectious disease threats, including mpox, SARS-CoV-2, whooping cough, and much more.

“Our teams are continually forward-thinking in terms of taking continuing education classes to prepare us for the future challenges of laboratory medicine,” said Pentella. “We are proud of our role to help ensure that Iowa communities are healthy places to live, work, and play.”

"He's attacked witnesses": Prosecutors want to make Trump delete some of his Truth Social posts

Prosecutors say trump violated a gag order by posting truth social attacks on stormy daniels and michael cohen, by nicholas liu.

Prosecutors in former President Donald Trump's hush money trial are seeking to fine the Republican defendant $1,000 each for three Truth Social posts he fired off within the last week, arguing that they violate a gag order. Last month prosecutors successfully obtained an order that prohibits Trump from attacking potential witnesses, jurors, court staff, and relatives of Judge Juan Merchan and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

As PBS reported , prosecutors on Monday singled out Truth Social posts that called Michael Cohen and Stormy Daniels — both key prosecution witnesses — “two sleaze bags who have, with their lies and misrepresentations, cost our Country dearly!” Prosecutors are asking Merchan to not only fine the former president but order him to take down the posts.

“The defendant has demonstrated his willingness to flout the order. He’s attacked witnesses in the case,” said prosecutor Christopher Conroy, who filed the official motion. While he read the posts, reporters with CNN observed Trump leaning forward with his elbows on the table.

Trump's lawyers argued that the posts did not violate the gag order, as they were responses to the witnesses' own statements. "It’s not as if [former] President Trump is going off and targeting individuals," argued Trump attorney Todd Blanche. "He’s responding to salacious repeated attacks by these witnesses."

Merchan will hold a hearing next Tuesday on whether or not to sanction Trump for the posts on his social network . Trump's attorneys have until Friday to file opposing arguments.
