This can be a specific accomplishment, a relevant skill, or an experience that demonstrates your value as a potential employee.
  • Transition to the Body: Conclude the introduction by smoothly transitioning to the main body of the cover letter, where you will provide more detailed information about your qualifications, experiences, and how they align with the requirements of the position.

How to Write a Bus Driver Cover Letter

As explained by Indeed (an employment resource site), an employer will pay close attention to the quality of a cover letter when reviewing an application. So, when applying for a bus driver position, it’s crucial that your application letter is well-written and addressed.

Read our simple tips (below) on how to effectively put together a bus driver cover letter!

1. Find Useful Information About the Employer

It can be tricky to figure out what you want your cover letter to say. Though, to make this easier, you can do a bit of online research to see what you can find out about the company or business. Take note of keywords that you can use in writing your cover letter’s contents.

2. Make Professional-Looking

Before writing anything down, you need to first give your cover letter a proper business layout. After all, part of impressing a recruiter is showing how neat and formal your application looks.

Open a new document in your chosen processing software. Then, make sure that the page size matches your regional standard, the orientation is set to a portrait or vertical format, and there are margins that are 1 inch in length.

3. Start with the Introduction and Title

The first thing to input in your document is an appropriate title. This can be the actual job name given by the company or your full name. Next, write down a fitting salutation to address the reader. You can use “Dear Employer,” or “Dear Recruitment Manager,” as examples for business or formal use.

Moving on, you should introduce yourself in the letter’s 1st paragraph. Some effective go-to talking points are driving job experiences and how you found out about the opening.

4. Get Them Interested in Your Resume

From dropping off an executive at the airport to picking up students en route, there’s a variety of transit tasks that a company or establishment might have for you. Therefore, your cover letter will need to convince the recruiter that you’re a good fit for the position. So, mention your various skills and achievements that can get you hired for the bus driver job. One particular asset that can help you is a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License); not only will this make you a more appealing candidate, but it can assist with getting further in your career path.

And so, you can go ahead and end your letter with a closing statement, which can be your eagerness to hear back from them and/or your gratitude for getting considered. Finally, give an appropriate valediction (like “Regards,” or “All the best,” ) along with your name.

Five tips on formatting your driver cover letter

Make sure to include the following:

  • Header and Salutation;
  • Introductory paragraph;
  • Body paragraph;
  • Closing paragraph;
  • Signature (this one is up to you).

Remember to use the same modern, simple font for your driver cover letter as you did for your resume (e.g. Lato, Rubik, etc.)

Ensure your driver cover letter is single-spaced and is wrapped around a one-inch margin, like in our cover letter templates .

Once completed, use our cover letter builder to export your driver cover letter in the best format to keep your information intact - PDF.

At the end of the day, your driver cover letter won't be assessed by the Applicant Tracker System (ATS) software, but by the recruiters. Your information should thus be legible, organized, and follow a structured logic.

The top sections on a driver cover letter

  • Header: This should include your contact information, the date, and the employer's contact information, and it is crucial for ensuring that your cover letter reaches the right person and that they can easily get back to you.
  • Greeting: Addressing the letter to a specific person or the hiring team by name shows that you have done your research and are genuinely interested in working for their specific company.
  • Opening Paragraph: You should introduce yourself and state the driving position you are applying for, conveying your enthusiasm and why you are interested in this opportunity.
  • Professional Driving Experience: Here, you'll discuss your past driving roles, highlighting specific experiences and qualifications that are relevant to the job, such as a clean driving record, knowledge of navigation systems, and safety protocols.
  • Closing Paragraph: Reiterate your interest in the position, invite the recruiter to review your attached resume, and express your eagerness to discuss how your skills and experiences align with the company's needs in a personal interview.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

  • Excellent navigation and driving skills: Familiarity with route planning and GPS systems to ensure timely deliveries and efficient travel.
  • Safety-conscious approach: A strong track record of driving safely to minimize the risk of accidents and protect vehicle integrity.
  • Adaptability to different vehicles: Experience with various types of vehicles, such as cars, vans, or trucks, indicating the capability to handle company-specific transportation needs.
  • Reliability and punctuality: Demonstrated ability to adhere to schedules, meet deadlines, and reliably complete routes, which is crucial for customer satisfaction and supply chain consistency.
  • Clean driving record: A history free of major traffic violations, which indicates responsibility and lowers the employer's insurance costs.
  • Strong physical condition and stamina: The ability to handle long hours on the road, including loading and unloading cargo if necessary, which is essential for maintaining productivity.

How to address hiring managers in your driver cover letter greeting

Goodbye, "Dear Sir/Madam" or "To whom it may concern!"

The salutation of your driver cover letter is how you kick off your professional communication with the hiring managers.

And you want it to start off a bit more personalized and tailored, to catch the recruiters' attention.

Take the time to find out who's recruiting for the role (via LinkedIn or the company page).

If you have previously chatted or emailed the hiring managers, address them on a first or last name basis.

The alternative is a "Dear HR team" or "Dear Hiring Manger", but remember that a "Dear Ms. Simmons" or "Dear Simon," could get you farther ahead than an impersonal greeting.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Company Name] Team,
  • Dear [Specific Department] Team,
  • Dear [Hiring Manager's Name],
  • Dear Mr./Ms. [Last Name],
  • Dear [First Name] [Last Name],

Get creative with your driver cover letter introduction

Recruiters are going to assess plenty of candidate profiles for the role. Thus, anything you do to stand out will win you brownie points.

Use your driver cover letter introduction to share something memorable about your experience .

But before you go down the rabbit hole of creativity and humor, align your message with the company culture.

For example, if you are applying for a role in some startup, use those first two sentences to tell a funny story (about your experience) to quickly connect with the recruiter.

Choosing your best achievement for the middle or body of your driver cover letter

Now that you have the recruiters' attention, it's time to write the chunkiest bit of your driver cover letter .

The body consists of three to six paragraphs that focus on one of your achievements.

Use your past success to tell a story of how you obtained your most job-crucial skills and know-how (make sure to back these up with tangible metrics).

Another excellent idea for your driver cover letter's middle paragraphs is to shine a light on your unique professional value.

Write consistently and make sure to present information that is relevant to the role.

A sincere and original way to end your driver cover letter

When writing their driver cover letter, candidates tend to use one of these phrases, "Sincerely yours" or "I look forward to hearing from you".

Both statements show good manners, but your cover letter should end in a more actionable manner .

Write about:

  • how you see yourself growing in the role/organization;
  • the benefits you would bring about (you'd impress even more with tangible metrics);
  • the next steps in the process (provide your availability for interviews).

Is it beneficial to mention that you have no experience in your driver cover letter?

Lacking professional experience isn't the end of the world for your driver cover letter .

Just be honest that you may not have had roles in the industry, but bring about so much more.

Like, your transferable skills, attained thanks to your whole work and life experience (e.g. the skills your summer spent working abroad taught you).

Or, focus on what makes you, you, and that one past success that can help you stand out and impress recruiters (think of awards you've attained and how they've helped you become a better professional).

Alternatively, write about your passion and drive to land the job and the unique skill set you would bring to enhance the workplace culture.

Key takeaways

Writing your driver cover letter doesn't need to turn into an endless quest, but instead:

  • Create an individual driver cover letter for each role you apply to, based on job criteria (use our builder to transform your resume into a cover letter, which you could edit to match the job);
  • Stick with the same font you've used in your resume (e.g. Raleway) and ensure your driver cover letter is single-spaced and has a one-inch margin all around;
  • Introduce your enthusiasm for the role or the company at the beginning of your driver cover letter to make a good first impression;
  • Align what matters most to the company by selecting just one achievement from your experience, that has taught you valuable skills and knowledge for the job;
  • End your driver cover letter like any good story - with a promise for greatness or follow-up for an interview.

School bus hits DMV building, injures driver and 2 students, officials say

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — A school bus struck a Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles building Thursday morning after swerving to avoid hitting a car, injuring two students and the bus driver, officials said.

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department said in a social media post that three people were taken to a hospital with injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening after the bus struck the building on Braddock Road.

The car also swerved and went into a ditch, but no one who was in the vehicle was taken to the hospital, Fairfax County police spokesperson Lt. John Crone said by telephone. The bus driver and two of the five children on the bus were left with minor injuries, Crone said. The DMV building sustained minor damage, Crone said.

No DMV employees were injured, but the office was closed while crews reviewed the damage, Virginia DMV spokesperson Jillian Cowherd said in a statement.

School bus driver had preliminary BAC of .133 while waiting to pick up students, police say

GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. ( WSAZ /Gray News) – A school bus driver in Kentucky was charged Tuesday with public intoxication while she was waiting to take students home.

According to a citation issued by the Flatwoods Police Department, Lisa Nichols, 57, was waiting for Greenup County students at an event.

A staff member alerted police, and Nichols admitted to drinking during dinner at a local restaurant.

Officers said the bus driver failed a preliminary breath test with results of .133 and showed signs of being intoxicated.

Flatwoods Police charged Nichols with alcohol intoxication in a public place.

Lisa Nichols was charged with public intoxication.

According to Greenup County Schools Superintendent Traysea Moresea, no students were ever on the school bus with Nichols after she was found to be drinking.

School administrators ensured all bus routes were covered.

Nichols is no longer employed by Greenup County Schools.

“Our number one goal is safety and we do not take reports lightly. We cannot and will not comment on the incident beyond the facts.
