The wild zebras can have a lifespan of 25 years. The height at the shoulder varies from 1.1 to 1.5 m and they can weigh around 200 kg to 450 kg. Zebras have large and rounded ears. It is not possible to ride zebras, unlike horses. This is because they are aggressive and can kick or bite if one gets closer to them. Zebras make a lot of noises which include snorting, braying, and high pitched barking to communicate within a group. These herbivores animals can run at the speed of 66 km/hr and sometimes outpacing their natural predators as well.

It is zebra’s stripes that disperse more than 80 per cent helping them to prevent sunburn. Female zebras are capable of giving birth to one offspring at a time and their gestation period is between 12 to 13 months. Baby Zebras also known as foals are born with brown and white stripes, at the time of birth. At the time of birth, these foals weigh up to 70 pounds and begin grazing in almost one week. They can take 7 to 16 months to become grown-up adults. They can travel long distances. Zebras play a crucial role in other herbivores’ lives by helping in clearing the way for the growth of tender new leaves and grasses.

The zebra is an African wild animal like a horse. It belongs to the horse family. It has black and white lines on its body. The unique stripes of zebras make them one of the most familiar animals among men.

The zebras came into existence before 4 million years. Their stripes come in different patterns, depending on the individual zebra. They are usually social animals as they live in small or large herds. They have never been tamed by men unlike their closest relatives like horses and donkeys.

There are three types of zebras. They are the plain’s zebra, the grevy’s zebra, and the mountain zebra. The plain’s zebra is the most common. The mountain zebra of Africa has a smooth coat, a white belly, and narrower stripes compared to the plain’s Zebra. The grevy’s zebra is the largest type. It has a long and narrow head. It appears like a mule. It is an inhabitant of the grasslands of Ethiopia and Kenya. The grevy’s zebra is the rarest type and is in danger of extinction.

Mountains, grasslands, forests, hills, etc. are some of the important habitats where zebras live.

They feed almost on grasses. Occasionally they eat shrubs, herbs, twigs, leaves, and bark. Their digestive systems allow them to live on diets of lower nutritional value. Like horses, zebras sleep standing up. They only sleep when neighbor zebras are around to warn them of enemies.

Generally, zebras are slower than horses but are full of energy. When their enemy chases them, they zigzag their way from one side to another. This makes it difficult for the enemy to catch them. When they are trapped, they kick or bite the attacker.

Male zebras are slightly bigger than females, The plain’s zebra is about 6 to 8.5 feet long. Its tail is about 18 inches. Each zebra can weigh up to 350 kilograms.

The zebras have excellent eyesight. Like most animals, their eyes are on the sides of their head. This gives them a wide-angle of view. They also have night vision. That means they can see at night, although not as good as that of most of their attackers.

Why zebras have stripes has long been a mystery. In his latest book, Tim Caro gives a compelling explanation that is more inspiring than any fiction by Kipling

Something very specific to zebra ecology accounts for those stripes

ACCORDING to Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories , the zebra got its stripes by standing half in the shade and half out, “with the slippery-slidy shadows of the trees” falling on its body. In Zebra Stripes , Tim Caro, a professor of wildlife biology at the University of California, Davis, sets out to test all the hypotheses explaining this most mysterious yet obvious phenomenon.

The challenge isn’t simply to come up with an explanation that “makes sense”(science would remain at Just So level were that the case) but to create predictions that flow from that explanation, and then to test them experimentally.

Caro lists dozens of theories, most of which boil down to five common factors: camouflage (protection from predators); warning coloration (zebras can bite); communication (social behaviours); temperature regulation (stripes may help resist the heat); and ectoparasites (biting flies might not like stripes).

Each of these and their many variants is explored in turn, as Caro describes how he tested them, and how virtually all – including the generally favoured camouflage theory – fail. In the end, the data converge on a single explanation: the role of biting flies (this is not a spoiler – the media pounced on it in 2014 after Caro’s paper was published in Nature Communications ).

As it turns out, the presence of stripes in zebras entirely overlaps with the distribution of certain species of biting fly. For reasons that are still unclear, flies dislike landing on striped surfaces. It is possible that the wiring of the fly eye means they cannot see stripes of some widths. Zebras may need to deter flies because their hair is shorter and thinner than that of other savannah animals so they are more susceptible to bites.

Zebra Stripes isn’t a piece of popular science writing, but an entrancing monograph that revels even in the minor details – from descriptions of how Caro used Photoshop to measure the stripes, through the number of paces he took in the bush wearing a zebra pelt to record how many insects settled on him, right down to the nitty-gritty of the statistical tests he used to make sense of his data.

This isn’t in the slightest bit boring or hard to understand, as Caro’s logical approach guides the reader. At every step, he pulls aside the curtain, revealing to the public exactly how science is done.

Caro’s dogged exploration of every possible explanation, his determination to extract testable predictions and then compare those with reality, are all reminiscent of Charles Darwin in On the Origin of Species . Like Origin , Caro’s book is also one long argument – not with the reader, but with the data, as he tussles with the annoying facts. In the end, the reader is compelled by the weight of evidence, which converges strongly on the flies.

In the right hands, this book could change lives. Had I read something like this at 18, I would have tried to join Caro’s research group, or at least have a career emulating his work. It’s too late for me, but I predict that this marvellous book will encourage a new generation to get into the field and tackle evolutionary biology’s remaining enigmas, with or without the help of Kipling.

Every Zebra does have a very unique pattern of black and white stripes on them, which is never similar for two Zebras. They are also known as odd ungulates which mean that they have odd number of toes on their hoofs.

The eyes of the Zebra are located at the sides of their heads. This makes them see at a better angle when a predator is around. They have excellent sense of taste and smell and also good hearing powers. Their night vision helps them to see at night and keeps them away from predators. Since they have a shiny coat on their body, it helps them to have a control of the heat from the sun.

The zebras live in social groups. The females in the group are called as fillies and the leader of the group is called as stallion. Zebras are herbivorous and hence they are a successful member of the grassland community.

Zebras mostly sleep by standing just like how horses do. They communicate to each other by either snorting, barking or whinnying. It is their ears that communicate when they are tensed or calm. If the ears are standing still in upright position, that indicates they are calm, but if they are pushed forward, it indicates they are frightened or tensed.

The predators of Zebras are mostly lions and hyenas. If a zebra is being threatened, they would form a circle facing outward and threaten the predator by either kicking or biting. Their long black strips do help them to some extend from predators as it camouflages well with the long grass, and thus they get skipped sometimes from their predator like lion’s coz lions cannot distinguish colors.

Zebras are mostly hunted down for their skin. The Grevy’s Zebra are considered to be an endangered species.

Opinion: We do anything to make our kids smile

Our oldest daughter turned 21 this week. I will try to spare her anymore public embarrassment except to say she has grown up to be kind, funny and hard-working. Especially kind.

I have learned to accept that our daughters have no real memories of most of the nutty things I used to do just to coax giggles from them. The times I'd squeeze onto a slide in a park to go down head-first, ker-thunk . The times I'd pretend to be oblivious to walls I would walk into, like a cartoon character, yee-ow, just to make them howl.

It doesn't take stage training at the Royal Shakespeare for a father to play the fool with conviction.

Our daughters figured out long ago there isn't really a magic witch on a star outside our windows, who looks over them; or a zebra named Stripey on our balcony; or a mermaid named Ethel, yes, Ethel Mermaid, who pokes her head out of the swells of Lake Michigan to sing, "You'll be swell! You'll be great!"

What a parent comes to tell themself is that while our children may have no memory of those moments that mean the world to us, they hear the stories, over the years, over and over, and a special sense of closeness endures. They know you would do anything, anything, anything to make them smile.

Opinion: As Kids Grow, So Do Their Parents

When our daughters get together now with some of the aunties and uncles they've known most of their lives, they meet them as young adults. They've written school papers on Shakespeare, Dickens, Laurie Halse Anderson, The Great Gatsby , and Langston Hughes. They sit at our table and talk about the news, films, games, articles, videos and friends. I'm the only one in the family who still uses some of the words they babbled as toddlers.

My wife and I are slowly beginning to change places with our children. They teach us things, and not just about tech, TikTok, and Taylor Swift, but history, events, and what they think we may need to survive in the world ahead.

They're breaking free, as they should. But, also seem to find time for us in their full, frenetic schedules, because they can see, displayed in the furrows of my anxious, aging face, how important it has become is for us to spend time with them.

I even think, now and then, I've overheard our daughters asking one another, "Do you remember the time our parents did that crazy thing?"
